Chat with Paul Kuharsky

Paul Kuharsky
  (2:58 PM)

Good afternoon fine people. Greetings from Houston. Thanks for coming by. Let's dive right in. I'll try to scroll back to the beginning.

Tyler Parker (Shelbyville,TN)

Hey Paul,Peyton Manning getting sacked three times in his brief stint in the Coltsa?? preseason opener is shocking. If it happens this week, will it will be an alarming problem?

Paul Kuharsky
  (2:58 PM)

Even if it doesn't. I expect the O-line is gonig to be a lingering issue.

Bushwacker Luke (Auckland,New Zealand)

Who will replace Albert on the D-line?

Paul Kuharsky
  (2:59 PM)

Combination of several guys: Jason Jones, Jovon Haye, Sen'Derrick Marks, Kevin Vickerson.

Eric M (Louisville/Twitter)

What's the chances Donald Brown takes Addai's starting job by midseason?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:00 PM)

I don't think starting is a big deal if it's a split backfield. I do expect it will wind up a split backfield, I just don't know how quickly.

Brandon (San Antonio, TX)

What or who has been the most suprising or impressive so far in Texans' camp?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:01 PM)

Andre Johnson is always impressive. So physical. I watched Glover Quin a lot today and think he's got a chance to be good.

Pat B (Houston)

PK, you've been in Houston for a couple of days, what are some observations of the coaches you have compared to last years coaches (R. Smith, Jethro Franklin, Jon Hoke), specifically their coaching style and how they seem to be interacting with the players?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:03 PM)

I've not been in position to listen in on any position group drills. But I say in tomorrow's Camp Confidential that I think Bill Kollar may be the biggest addition this team has made. Will eventually have a post about one technique change that comes with David Gibbs.

Brent (stuck in portland airport)

Hey Paul do you have anything that helps you pass the time when you get stuck?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:04 PM)

The ability to use my Blackberry as a modem and get online on my laptop without paying that rip-off airport fee for wireless.

James (Murfreesboro, Tennessee)

How BIG is the Titans Vs. Steelers opening game looking about right now?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:04 PM)

Looks about like 1/16th of the Titans' schedule to me.

Rogersworthe (Nashville, TN)

So far, the Titans D-Line has looked talented and deep, but not dominant like last year. Is this what a Titans fan like me should expect all year? Talented, but not dominant?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:05 PM)

I think they will generate pressure with four a lot of the time. You can't gauge anything off the little bit of preseason they've played so far.

Jeff (NC)

Since you've been in Houston, has Diles shown you enough to keep a starting gig at one of the OLB positions?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:06 PM)

Have not really noticed him. Adibi and Cushing will start outside.

Richard (Greensboro, NC)

How many wins will it take to get the last AFC wild card slot this year?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:07 PM)

AFC divisions will have a lot of mediocre second place teams, I suspect. So maybe nine with tiebreakers?

Jake (Avon, IN)

PK, how do the Colt's lose three starters (Nick Harper, David Thorton, Jake Scott) to a division rival? is that unusual or business as usual in the NFL?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:08 PM)

They can't afford to keep them when they become free agents. Their rival has money and views them as fits, and voila...

Dewayne Wheeland (Houston)

Will Jarret Dillard become a prominent receiver for Jacksonville since the WR corp is so depleted?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:09 PM)

I wouldn't call it depleted. They got rid of guys they didn't want. Dillard dropped a lot of passes while I was there. I expect Holt, Walker, Williamson and Underwood will rank ahead of him at the start, but that could still leave him as the primary slot guy.

Tom (Halifax, VA)

What do you have to say about Adibi? A starter but no star, or still some potential to rise into an elite LB?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:10 PM)

Too early to say. Potential. I worry a little about the bulking up, for some guys a fast gain like that leads to injury.

Jake (Avon, IN)

PK, any truth to new colleague Adam Shefter's report that the Titans were ever interested in Marvin Harrison?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:11 PM)

Jeff Fisher said they have had no contact with Harrison.Harrison to TEN makes no sense. They finally draft a WR in the first round, then go get a guy to play ahead of him?

Zandall (Anderson, IN)

Do the Colts have the potential to become a top10 run offense?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:12 PM)

I don't think so. A jump from 31st to top 10 is huge, and they have some offensive line issues. But they don't need a giant jump. If they go from 31 to 21 it would make a huge difference.

John (Port Huron)

Mike Thomas is the most explosive of all J'ville WR's and you didn't mention him? What gives?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:13 PM)

Sorry, he was out hurt much or all of the time I watched the Jags.

Matt (IN)

PK, Usain Bolt just set another record in the 200. A lot of people are wondering why some team doesn't try to get him to play football. This would be a disaster, right? (ala Skeets Nehemiah).

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:14 PM)

I think someone will try. I also think there have been plenty of guys with top-flight speed who couldn't play football.A helmet, shoulder pads and getting hit have a way of changing things for a fast guy, even the fastest guy in the world.

Charles (jax, fl)

Having visited camps for all 4 teams now, which is the most fan friendly?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:17 PM)

Jacksonville is pretty fan friendly -- players have to walk a long way to get to locker room and fans can line the picket fences along that path. They also have beer on sale.Titans and Colts about even.Houston has, by far, the fewest open dates. Which is partially about the heat, I think.

Chris (NC)

PK, with what happenned to CJ in the Ravens game last year, will the offense still be stale if he goes out given the Titan's new receiver corp?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:17 PM)

Not as stale. But if you lose him, you lose a lot.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:19 PM)

The hurricane gets used as an excuse too often. (Very unfortunate, of course.) The ramifications of it also won them a game -- Rob Bironas kicks that field goal if the roof is shut and the Titans don't lose that game.I expect Houston to contend for a Wild Card spot from third place in the division.

Jeff Fisher (Nashville)

What running backs are going to make the my Titans roster?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:19 PM)

CJ, White, Ringer. Hall if you want to include the FB.

Charles (jax, fl)

Worried about Garrard and depth behind him in Jax. You think the Jags will go after the odd man out in Minnesota now that Favre is there?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:20 PM)

I think Jackson is the third best QB in Minnesota, and I don't know that he's got enough to solve Jags' depth or future problems.

Jake (Hilton Head Island, SC)

How has Britt looked so far in camp? Is he going to contribute more then Hawkins did last year or not?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:21 PM)

He made some plays in his first preseason game and comes into the league with much more value than Hawkins. I expect him to be the No. 3 WR and contribute right away.

Kenny (Callahan, FL)

About a week late with this question, but which side got the best of the deal between the Jags and Eugene Monroe? Thanks.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:21 PM)

Seemed about right to me, fair to both.

Jeff (Jacksonville)

How much of a impact do you think tory holt will have on the deep passing game in Jax

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:22 PM)

The deep passing game is going to be about Williamson and Underwood, not Holt.

Dave (Canada)

CJ doesn't make a lot of money. If they resign Lendale to a contract worth more than CJ's do you think they'll also have to redo CJ's contract to keep him as the highest paid RB on the team?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:22 PM)

I don't think they will re-sign White.But... if your scenario happens, that's the way it goes. When CJ's turn comes around, he'll get his. Probably a year before his contract comes up.

Jeff (Jacksonville)

any sleeper players in the AFC South regarding fantasy football

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:25 PM)

Guys I expect will be undervalued: Kevin Walter, Austin Collie, Jared Cook, Troy Williamson.

Tyrone (Nashville)

Would the Titans trade to get Brandon Marshall?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:25 PM)

No. Why? Why do they want the headache? They went and got two receivers in Washington and Britt, they are going to give them a chance.

Taylor (Clovis, CA)

Do you feel that Jared Cook will make a big impact on the Titan's offense this coming season and is there anything you've noticed that would temper fan's excitement over his playmaking ability?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:26 PM)

We haven't really seen him get hit yet. Can he hold on to it when a big shot is coming? If he can, stay excited.

Peter (Nashville)

Paul, I keep reading that there is very little chance for Keith Bullock to be on the Titans roster next year. I do not think we will give him a big new deal, but I do not understand why no one else thinks he will be franchised. The Titans will have one, maybe even 2 franchise tags. If neither Keglar nor McGrath seem ready, I feel very certain that the Titans will slap that tag on him and prolong the need for a replacement. Thoughts?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:26 PM)

Quite possible. Won't make him happy, however.

Charles (Jax, FL)

Supposedly Terrence Knighton looked good in the middle for Jags week 1. Do you see him getting the nod over Ellison because he was a decently high pick?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:27 PM)

I think they are going to both see plenty of time in the rotation.Be sure to check out a blog column today featuring Ellison.

Bob (Lowell)

Would you mind answering some AFC East questions? That slacker Grahm hasn't been around in ages.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:28 PM)

Does he not chat any more?I suspect he was at the card show in Cleveland and I thought I saw him dressed as a wizard in Indy when the gaming convention was going on same time as Colts-Vikes.

SprungOnSports (Long Island)

How good do you think Kenny Britt will be in his rookie season if he recovers fully from his injury, and will his attitude be a problem?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:30 PM)

He's shown no attitude that's a concern since he got to Nashville. I think he'll be a contributor, but probably not rank higher than fifth on the team's receptions list.

SJ (Nashville, TN)

Who the heck is Austin Collie??

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:30 PM)

Colts fourth-rounder, slot receiver.

Jim Wyatt (Nashville)

Paul, when are you going to jump into the ice bath?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:31 PM)

Hey, when we worked together I went to mascot camp as a dog, sold beer at a minor league game, kicked field goals with Al Del Greco and trained for the combine with college prospects.I fear no ice bath.Great read, pal.

Chris Johnson (Nashville)

Paul, $20 I score 20 TD's this year....on the ground alone.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:32 PM)

Please. Have you forgotten LenDale gets the goal line carries?

Jeff (jacksonville)

Do you really think the Jags will use a Derrick Harvey as a drop back/Rush LB in a 3-4?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:33 PM)

I think the 3-4 looks are designed to get Groves into a comfortable spot, not Harvey.

Charles (Dayton, Ohio)

PaulWhat are the chances that Javon Ringer makes the Titans roster even though they have Lendale and Chris Johnson

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:34 PM)

One hundred percent. They're going to have a third back, maybe a fourth. I can't see him not on the roster.

Tim Graham (AFC East)

Excuse me. I had to be at the Hall of Fame ceremony. You know, because people associated with the division I cover got elected. What do you know about that kind of greatness?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:35 PM)

Well, I know Bruce Matthews. Talked to him yesterday as a matter of fact. Mike Munchak is a pretty big deal. And two of my teams haven't been around very long.

Teddy (College Park)

Do you know which early regular season games you'll be covering? When you're at one game, do you dvr or watch tapes of the other South games later?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:36 PM)

Try to see all I can, but can't get DirecTV at my house, so I don't see every game. Week One I expect to be at Titams-Steelers and Jags-Indy.

Jeff (NC)

Will the Tampa 2 with wrinkles be more effective than the straight Tampa 2, or will the wrinkles show more weaknesses?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:37 PM)

I would certainly think the wrinkles would serve to make the Colts both more effective and less predictable.

Clay (Duval County)

What up PK. Brian Williams looked awful in the preseason opener. Assuming Derek Cox gets over this groin issue soon, if you're running the show in Jax. would you give him the nod week 1 and let him get his growing pains out of the way early?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:37 PM)

I would.

SprungOnSports (Long Island)

Do you think MJD can be that workhorse back without Fred Taylor? He doesn't seem like the type of guy that can pound the rock 25 times a game. What do you think?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:38 PM)

I think they need to be careful not to overuse him early if they want him to be himself in Nov. and Dec.Watch how they throw him screens and such to get the ball in his hands in space where he won't take as much of a pounding. If he gets 25 touches by eight are like that, they can reduce the wear and tear.

Spencer Creek (Franklin TN)

So what is your final prediction...that you will or will not be invited to attend with the morning show crew and their Alzheimers benefit winner...

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:40 PM)

Excellent question. Depends on level of hero worship winner has for Frank Wycheck. If it's low, I think I am in because they might enjoy me mocking him. If it's high, are you available to buy me lunch that day?

Roger Ebert (chat critic)

Paul, I read that you were concerned about your chat performance this week. Your new surroundings don't appear to have hindered your chatting but they haven't improved it either. At this mid-point I'll give you 1 thumb up. The easiest way to get 2 thumbs up? more Favre and celebrities. I'll update your review at the end.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:41 PM)

The celebrities always come late. (But here you are!)As for Favre:Farve, Favre, Favre, Favre, Favre, Farve, Favre, Favre, Favre, Favre, Farve, Favre, Favre, Favre, Favre, Farve, Favre, Favre, Favre, Favre, Farve, Favre, Favre, Favre, Favre, Farve, Favre, Favre, Favre, Favre, Farve, Favre, Favre, Favre, Favre.

Phil (Nashville)

Paul, Scouts Inc. recently graded all the NFL players and has Vince Young rated higher than Kerry Collins. Is there any justification for this?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:42 PM)

None.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:42 PM)

I only saw first quarter. But have heard he's less impressive than he was in the offseason

Jared Cook (TN)

Do you think I'll be the starting TE this season? And if so, by what week?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:43 PM)

Again, i think starting doesn't matter for you. If I'm you, I want to be on the field on second- or third-and-long.And I suspect you will be often.

Awayne (INDY)

Which AFCS stadium has the best food, and what is the best food item at any of the stadiums?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:45 PM)

Press box food is all I can speak of. Jags often have a chocolate fountain with strawberries, pretzels, rice krispies treats, etc. They had me at chocolate fountain.

JB (TX)

So you don't think Ganther's special teams ability will keep him on the roster? What about Cramer? I can't imagine all 4 TE's and Cramer make the team.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:46 PM)

No room for Cramer. Yes to four TEs. Ganther's potential hinges on two things: Numbers/ injuries at other positions and Ringer's special teams abilities.

Rickey Henderson (Hall of Fame)

Yeah, those guys are great, but Rickey is the greatest of all-time

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:46 PM)

Rickey is also like clockwork in AFC South chats.

Taylor (Clovis, CA)

There's been a lot of speculation about whether Kerry Collins will be able to put up another good season. Do you expect Collins to be better this year since he knows he's the starter or does history (poor performance after a good season) potentially get the best of him?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:48 PM)

I don't see any reason to predict he will not be as effective as he was last year. Great line, great run game, better weapons to throw to, very good defense.Things are set up beautifully for him.Did a column on it a while back if you are interested. Drop a note in my mailbag and I can send the link.

Mark Howard (Nashville)

On my next trip to the water park, should I go shirtless or stick with the singlet?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:48 PM)

The singlet never fails. I like the prison stripe look for you. Don't forget, Chad is filming you.

Albert H. (DC)

Who will have a better record this year the Titans or Redskins?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:49 PM)

Titans.

Brandon (Jackson, TN)

Titans take Britt with their first round pick and Colts take Collie with their fourth round pick. From observations and online blogs it seems that Collie is much further along than Britt. Did the Titans waste a first round pick on Britt when they could of got a better value later on in the draft? Or are the Colts just better at coaching their players up?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:50 PM)

How, before he's played in a single regular season game, are you even contemplating calling Britt a wasted pick. That's crazy.Britt's been a little dinged up. Collie is exclusively playing the slot, Britt may be required to learn more. They are not the same kind of receivers at all. You're jumping to a lot of conclusions way too early.

Corey (D.C.)

Did the Texans do enough on defense to take some pressure off Mario?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:51 PM)

Maybe not. We'll see. The secondary is the concern to me. But generally, the offense should carry this team.

Oiler Fan (Austin)

There seem to be an alarming number of injuries at Titan's camp. Is this par for the course, or is there reason to be alarmed for Titan fan?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:51 PM)

Nothing out of the ordinary, and no injuries that have knocked anyone out for the long-term, those are the big deals.

Dave (Canada)

Chris Henry and Lavelle Hawkins have each made special teams tackles this preseason. Do you think that they've been told that special teams are their only way onto the roster?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:52 PM)

I don't know why they would tell Chris Henry that when there is no way he can make the roster.

Josh (New York)

such a short question and i need an answer to help me decide on my keepers!! boldin or white??

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:54 PM)

I'd take White. Primary weapon for a QB I think will continue to get better.John McClain next to me says Boldin. He thinks Boldin will be hungrier based on no contract and White could get happy since he got his. I am terrible at fantasy, thus the second opinion. You probably can't go wrong.

Josh (NY)

Any chance the Jags have a bounceback year? This team isn't far off from the one that went 11-5. Some could argue that this team is better if the offensive line is healthy.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:56 PM)

How is it not that far off? Plenty of key guys are gone.To get out of last place, I think they need a half dozen or more unproven players to all have big years simultaneously, plus something bad to happen to the Titans, Colts or Texans.

JT (VA)

Who are your picks for the super bowl right now?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:56 PM)

Not ready to reveal. Not sure I know.

Marc (Tampa)

Do you think Vince Young has a shot at taking the position as starting QB back?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:56 PM)

I do not.

Charles (Jax)

Can you predict records for the Dirty South teams? Curious as to exactly how poorly you think the Jags will fare.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:57 PM)

Six wins, I'd say.

Finley (Nashville)

Hope you don't mind, but I had some friends over last night.... you might want to call a carpet cleaner.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:57 PM)

That's not what the other human who lives in our house told me. Behave.

Jake (Hilton Head Island, SC)

Why does Jeff Fisher insist on always saying that Vince is the QB of the future. He said that on PTI Yesterday....I don't get it why can't they just admit it, cut their losses and move on?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:58 PM)

Spin, spin, spin. And maybe if he says it enough it somehow comes true? Are you dizzy yet?

Awayne (INDY)

If VY gets cut after the season do you Titans going after a mid-range free agent or drafting a QB and hoping Collins can last 2-3 more years?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:59 PM)

I would expect them to get their next guy, probably in the draft, to work behind Collins in 2010 or even take over along the way if he gets good fast.

Peyton Manning (Indy)

I'm definitely terrified that we're in for another slow start, and the Titans will whoop us again, right?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:00 PM)

Hey bud. Slow start was largely because of your knee and missing camp. You start JAX, at MIA, at ARIZ, SEA.Worst case would be 2-2, but I expect 3-1.

Josh (NY)

What key guys are gone?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:04 PM)

Maybe I overstated number, but I didn't overstate stature: Taylor, Stroud, Peterson. They have giant question marks at DT, CB, S, WR and TE we well as LBs who've regressed.

Brett Favre (Minnesota)

My Super Bowl pick: Favre.

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:05 PM)

You love you some you. The team is probably in meetings or practicing right now, huh? And you're surfing.

Matt (IN)

PK, you don't have to comment but please post. I appreciated your post on Brackett winning that award. I know you are not big into posting these types of stories but I appreciated this. I wasn't aware at the time, but one of the kids Brackett took to Holiday World here in Indiana was a friend's cousin. Made the kids day. Thanks.

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:05 PM)

That award is a giant deal and Brackett is a great guy.

CAM ((Houston))

So PK from what I am hearing out of you I get the feeling you dont think the Texans will improve on last years 8-8....

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:06 PM)

I've said over and over I think they contend for the final Wild Card slot from third place in the South. To do that they'd surely have to be better than 8-8, don't you think? I do.

Bruce (NJ)

Super bowl w/ backstage pass or one of my concerts w/ backstage pass? Be honest.

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:07 PM)

That's not even debatable. Concert. I've been "backstage" at Super Bowls.

Rogersworthe (Nashville, TN)

Do you agree that the Titans have some severe depth and age issues on the Defense?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:09 PM)

Not severe, no. CB depth is an issue. maybe LB too. I don't see why a Bulluck or a Harper (who's underrated) get old all of a sudden.Titans have fewer question marks among their starting 22 than any team in the division. Colts are solid, but LT is a BIG issue.

Chocolate Fountain (Jacksonville, FL)

Thanks for the love PK!

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:10 PM)

No, no. Thank you for all those wonderful Sunday afternoons. How about stopping by Dallas tomorrow night and Houston Saturday?

Tim Graham (AFC East)

I had to make my friends list private on Facebook because I felt bad about you being embarrassed by how many more friends I have than you. Zima FTW!

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:11 PM)

New York and New England are a bit bigger than Jacksonville and Indy, wouldn't you agree?Don't let the big markets fool you into feeling popular, chief. How's TO's toe?

Nathan (Opelousas Louisiana)

Do you think the Saints have a leginament chance of winning the super bowl?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:12 PM)

I'd say they are second tier NFC contenders. I have Giants, Falcons, Eagles as first tier.Picked them last year for the SB, so am still a little bitter. Brees is great and defense has been flying around here during these practices.

Brandon (Indy, IN)

Who impressed you the most a Colts camp?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:13 PM)

Manning, of course. I thought Ed Johnson was looking really good.

Josh (NY)

Taylor was only as good as he was in 2007 because Mojo sharing carries. I don't think Jones/Jennings is going to be a significant downgrade from Taylor at this point in his career. Stroud only played 9 games and Peterson only played 10 games in 2007, so I don't see how they were "key" figures. Their LBs have regressed? Daryl Smith is still a great linebacker and Justin Durant is still growing. Their wide receivers are also better than the ratpack from 2007 and they have plenty of depth at DT. The combo of Thomas/Monroe is also better than Barnes at LT.

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:16 PM)

I haven't see Daryl Smith be great.I also think the other three teams have done more to get better the last two years than Jacksonville.Who's the second DT and do you feel he's proven? The second corner? Why should we think Nelson isn't heading down instead of up? Have any of the receivers besides Holt ever done it before? You're right on some stuff for sure. They've upgraded from Barnes. Durant is still growing.

JB (TX)

Are we gonna get a full report on the Jerry Jones-mahal?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:17 PM)

Sure. Thanks for coming folks. See you next week from the home office in Nashvegas.I'll be at Titans-Cowboys tomorrow and back here for Texans-Saints Saturday.Cheers.
