Chat with Dan Rafael

Dan Rafael
  (11:59 AM)

Greetings Fight Freaks. I hope you check out the new big notebook that is posted as well as the new blog, updated schedule and divisional and pound-for-pound rankings. We've got a nice HBO tripleheader on Saturday with Diaz-Malignaggi headlining and a lot of big fights coming in the fall, so let's get to it.

Derek (Brooklyn)

Danimal, any updates on Pavlik-Williams situation? I'm a Pavlik fan but I've become pretty disappointed with him over the last year, from being on the cusp of being a mainstream star he now seems on the brink of irrelevance...

Dan Rafael
  (12:01 PM)

Right now, everything is in limbo. According to Top Rank and Williams promoter Dan Goossen, Pavlik is seeing an independent doctor for him to let them know his opinion of the infection, how bad it is, how long it may take to heal, etc... Ideally, Pavlik won't miss too much time and they can reschedule the bout before the end of the year.

Charles (Philly)

Your weekly thoughts made it sound like you like Diaz by decision, but what are your official picks for tomorrow night's B.A.D. card?

Dan Rafael
  (12:02 PM)

I think Diaz does outpoint Paulie or even stop him to the body.

Paul B (NY, NY)

Let's get this out of the way: predictions for BAD's 3 main fights? Thanks Dan.

Dan Rafael
  (12:03 PM)

For the other bouts, I really think both so-called dogs can win -- Ishe and Klassen. That said, I will still roll with the favorites. I'll take Guerrero in a very tough fight and I'll take Jacobs via decision.

Chris (Nashville)

D$, I have postponed getting my marriage license so I can follow the chat. What does that do for my freak status? Diaz by UD.

Dan Rafael
  (12:03 PM)

I would say that is not a good way to begin your committment to your future wife.

jamesa (ottawa)

hey dan, I took the day off of work, in my undies eating cheetos and chatting. Freak status?

Dan Rafael
  (12:04 PM)

Not sure about the underwear and Cheetos, but the chatting part is good.

Drew (Lexington, KY)

What are the odds of Santos-Foreman stealing the show from Pac-Cotto? ha ha ha

Dan Rafael
  (12:04 PM)

Arum says that fight will be on the PPV undercard on Nov. 14. Stealing the show -- no chance.

Bronk (Dillsburg, PA)

Dan, is there more going on with Pavlik than just a staph infection? Missing doctor appointments? It doesn't seem that he and his mangement are on the same page. It seems that his head isn't in the right place. What else is going on here?

Dan Rafael
  (12:06 PM)

We all hear the rumors that Pavlik has a drinking problem. If he does or he does not, I do not know. But missing appointments with a doctor, especially on something so important as your hand for a fighter with a seven-figure fight looming, is a sign that all is not right in Pavlik's life. Whatever his problems may be besides this hand situation, I just hope he gets them worked out.

Derek (Brooklyn)

Will there be RAD tomorrow night for the Freaks????

Dan Rafael
  (12:06 PM)

No there will not be.

Alan (Plantation, FL)

Why is the Diaz-Malinaggi fight on BAD instead of HBO World Championship Boxing? They are both well known names, and have fought on WCB in the past. Either way I prefer Papa/Kellerman over Lampley/Merchant.

Dan Rafael
  (12:06 PM)

It's a BAD because it does not deserve the status (or license fee) of a WCB. Pretty simple.

Richk (Phila,Pa.)

When is Rafael Marquez going to fight ?

Dan Rafael
  (12:07 PM)

He had been scheduled for a fight this weekend in Mexico, but I am told that bout is not happening. I am not sure why it's off.

Kevin (Denver, CO)

Dan: What are the odds of seeing Pavlik- Williams in 2009 as of this morning?

Dan Rafael
  (12:07 PM)

I honestly have no idea. I hope it happens, but everything is very much up in the air. Anything I would say would purely be a guess right now.

Patrick (Mexico)

Danno-This is kind of random, but I remember you mentioning a big body punching Ghanian (I think) during last year's Olympics. Of course, given the bogus scoring, he lost, but you said he was attracting interest from American promotors. Assuming you know the guy I am talking about, what's up with him?

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 PM)

You are thinking of Bastie Samir, who is signed with manager Cameron Dunkin and Top Rank. I believe he is back in his home country and trying to get his visas in order so he can return to America and continue his career. I think he ought to be back here before too long. He's an exciting guy to watch with a lot of potential.

Sal (NJ)

The rest of the Cotto/Pac undercard better be stacked. That first fight is terrible. Arum's credibility is about to be shot.

Dan Rafael
  (12:10 PM)

The other fights on the undercard could be sensational. Arum told me the other day he is going to do what he can to make Valero against Soto (instead of having them in separate fights). The other fight will be a war -- Alfonso Gomez vs. Soto Karass. That will be sensational.

Josh (New York)

Funny how GBP are talking up Williams vs Hopkins and not Williams vs Mosley. Seems Money Mayweather is not the only welterweight that doesn't like fighting bigger guys.

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 PM)

Richard Schaefer called me and mentioned Hopkins-Williams to me and I literally laughed at him. I have no interest in that fight at all. I'd MUCH rather see Mosley-Williams. Hopkins would want Williams to come up to like 170 at least. BHop is a great fighter, but come on. He made his name mostly on smaller guys -- Trinidad, Oscar, Pavlik, Winky. He did move up to fight Tarver so I give him credit. But please, not Williams. Boring fight and nobody to buy any tickets.

Ray (LA)

What are Valero's chances of getting to fight in Vegas with the new ruling that just came out? I know they are taking each fighter that applies for a license on a case by case basis. I hope he gets reinstated.

Dan Rafael
  (12:13 PM)

I believe he will get a license. Valero has seen a variety of doctors over the years, such as experts at UCLA. He was also licensed in Texas after a million tests.

Alan (Plantation, FL)

Lt. Dan, will you be at the season finale of FNF next week?

Dan Rafael
  (12:13 PM)

No.

Erik (Austin, TX)

Dan, I understand Paulie is upset about the ref and judges assignments and I happen to agree, but do you think he's distracted by it at all?

Dan Rafael
  (12:14 PM)

I don't think he's distracted by it. Having talked to him a few times in the past couple of weeks, I believe he is motivated by it.

Sean (New Jersey)

Plain and simple King Freak...Pavlik afraid of Williams, or not happy with the contract?

Dan Rafael
  (12:14 PM)

Neither.

Mark (ATL)

Do you think Paulie Malinaggi's criticism of Raul Caiz Jr. judging the fight is fair? I tend to think that Caiz Jr. scorecards are quite fair.

Dan Rafael
  (12:15 PM)

Paulie's opinion is that Caiz, as Mexican-American, is not "neutral" to be judging a fight involving a Mexican-American. I see where Paulie is coming from even though Caiz is a solid official.

Charles (Philly)

Do you support the Nevada commission's replay decision?

Dan Rafael
  (12:15 PM)

100 percent.

Aaron (Cincinnati)

Do you think it would be in PWilliams best interest to find another fight? Let Pavlik figure out what he wants to do and make that fight early next year.

Dan Rafael
  (12:16 PM)

Right now he and his team are talking about their options. The best thing in my mind is for them to have the fight rescheduled this year and go from there.

Brian (Sacramento, CA)

Dan,Is Baby Bull's pressure going to be too much for Paulie?

Dan Rafael
  (12:16 PM)

I suspect the pressure is going to be a problem for Paulie.

Pedro (Puerto Rico)

What are the chances of Juanma fighting Caballero? Do you think he's ducking him? who do you like in that fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:17 PM)

Juanma is fighting Oct. 10 in New York so there's no chance the fight happens this year. I think if HBO or Showtime would see the light and proactively pursue the match, it could happen. I do not think Juanma is ducking anyone.

Brian (DC)

The replay decision is great, especially considering that Cotto-Pac is a fight with a very high probably of unintentional butts. Two guys who come forward and two guys who have been cut many times.

Aaron (Hartford)

Any word on Paulies hands ?

Dan Rafael
  (12:17 PM)

He has two.

Charles (Philly)

Valero-Soto? Wow! These PPV undercards are suddenly looking so good that I need to pinch myself. Here's hoping Arum comes through!

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

I'm going to blog about that fight and what Arum and I talked about the other day.

Erik (New York City, Queens)

I do believe Roy Jones did a good job dominating Jeff Lacy, but is all of his fights going to PPV from here on out? Hes not that big of an attraction anymore.. even if he did do a good job in his last fight.

Dan Rafael
  (12:19 PM)

His fights are on PPV because the networks aren't buying them. If a network wants to buy one then, of course, the fight would not be on PPV. But if you want to see Roy fight these days, get your $34.95 ready.

Ross (Indianapolis)

DTM, great weekend for entertainment! Fun fight with Diaz/Paulie Saturday night, then SummerSlam on Sunday! Gonna make for a rough Monday! Who ya got in TLC Sunday night?

Dan Rafael
  (12:20 PM)

I'm rooting for Hardy!

Steve (Sac,Ca)

Dano, when do you expect to see Wlad's next fight officialy announced?

Dan Rafael
  (12:21 PM)

Not for awhile. I don't think Wlad will fight the rest of 2009. I think we'll see him and Chambers in early 2010.

R! (Yay Area)

Considering Arce KO'd Concepcion and even though he was blown up against Nonito, does Arce give Donaire problems if they where to meet?

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

I think the combination of him fighting a much bigger man and his hand injury early in the fight made it a tough night for Donaire. If he fights bigger guys by design, he won't be drying out as much and that will help him. Against Concepction, Donaire dried out and the other guy didn't. It makes a difference. I would love to see Donaire-Arce. Arum says he wants to make it.

GC (Queens, NY)

Hey Dan can you make a contest in which a fan sits next to you at ringside?

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

I can't.

Steve (Sac,Ca)

Dano, why wasn't Bute invited to be in the super middleweight tourney?

Dan Rafael
  (12:24 PM)

He had a mandatory due Showtime was not interested in and they made a decision to roll with six fighters.

Dan (NYC)

What's next for RJJ?

Dan Rafael
  (12:25 PM)

Are you living under a rock? Did you not watch the PPV? Did you not read today's notebook? Why don't you do that and then come with a better question that that or risk banishment.

Anthony (Brookline, MA)

Is it time to put the one Ricky Hatton on the Winky Wright Memorial Milk Carton?

Dan Rafael
  (12:25 PM)

The dude got WAXED in May. It's only August. Give the dude a break.

El General (New York, New York)

I tend to think the NSAC should have gone further and allowed instant replay for disputed knockdowns too, why draw the line at them when they played major roles in fights such as Freitas-Casamayor?!

Dan Rafael
  (12:26 PM)

They can always expand replay's role. Let them start with this and see how it goes.

Charles (Philly)

Dan, your comment about RJJ only fighting on PPV makes me skeptical that the Green fight will happen in Australia. There's something like a 14-hour time difference, so how would Roy get any significant US TV money? Could they do it Stateside, instead?

Dan Rafael
  (12:27 PM)

The money in that fight will be mostly generated in Australia by Aussie TV and an enormous live gate.

Charles (Philly)

Do you think Litzau can make some noise at 135? Like you said, his fights are usually exciting.

Dan Rafael
  (12:27 PM)

I'm not sure how far he goes at 135, but he's entertaining and I would love to see him against a quality opponent to see what he can do in the division.

R! (Yay Area)

Litzau vs the winner of Escobedo/Katsidis!

Dan Rafael
  (12:28 PM)

Not bad.

Steve (Hartford)

Any chance the Dawson/Johnson rematch gets bumped up to the OCt. 3rd date now that Pavlik/Williams is off?

Dan Rafael
  (12:28 PM)

Dawson-Johnson is Nov. 7 and isn't moving.

Jeremy (Boston)

Hey Dan. I see Israel Vasquez on the scehdule for October. Any word on Opponent? TV coverage? It says Nokia Theatre....does that mean "Fight Night Club" on Versus?

Dan Rafael
  (12:29 PM)

There is no opponent yet and no TV yet. Richard Schaefer tells me he is working on the television but this is not part of the Fight Night Club series Versus has been doing.

Ed (Clifton, NJ)

You're thought on Jorge Linares?

Dan Rafael
  (12:29 PM)

Terrific young fighter, not active enough and needs to be seen in America, where he could make some serious noise.

Brian (DC)

If Pavlik-Williams gets flat-out cancelled for 2009, does that free up some HBO money and increase the chances of Mosley-Berto?

Dan Rafael
  (12:29 PM)

I think that is a possibility.

jeff (PA)

Who from HBO is working the show tomorrow?

Dan Rafael
  (12:30 PM)

The usual BAD crew -- Papa, Max and Lennox.

Taylor (SLC, UT)

Dan, Like you, I think this Nevada replay decision is a good thing. But it wasn't clear to me if the ref could replay the possible injury/foul between rounds, rule the foul, then let the action continue the following round...or does the fight have to be totally over due to the injury/foul before the replay is used. When in the fight is the ref permitted to see the replay?

Dan Rafael
  (12:31 PM)

According to Keith Kizer from the Nevada commission, it will ONLY be used if a fight is stopped, not between rounds.

Aaron (Hartford)

Oh man...that means we have to hear Lenox butcher Paulies last name for 12 rounds....

Dan Rafael
  (12:33 PM)

Absolutely!

brian (scottsdale, az)

best wishes for a speedy recovery to Nick Charles. Sounds like he has a helluva fight ahead of him.

Dan Rafael
  (12:33 PM)

I'm sure all the Freaks feel the same way.

Hector (Mass)

Is Boreman-Santos what you consider to be part of the 'spectacular undercard' Arum promised? In the last chat you said you'd hold Arum to that. Will you call him out on it?

Dan Rafael
  (12:34 PM)

I told him the fight stinks. But I also love the Valero-Soto and Gomez-Karass fights and the main evnet. So if three of the four are terrific that's still pretty darn good.

Erik (Atlanta, Ga.)

D$$$$$ Was Roy's performance a sign that he is close to his prime OR Lacy is just a shot fighter? And If Roy beats Green would you be interested in a Roy vs Adamak fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:35 PM)

It was certainly a combination of both. I don't see Adamek-Roy happening but I guess you never know.

Joe (Stamford, CT)

Are you surprised that "The Ghost" got back on HBO so quickly after his nonsense the last time he was on BAD?

Dan Rafael
  (12:35 PM)

Not at all. Golden Boy has the dates and doesn't have much else to offer in that spot.

Josh (NYC)

Do you think Prizefighter will come to the US?

Dan Rafael
  (12:36 PM)

I do think we'll see it here at some point. It's a good format and I have seen some of the UK shows and they're pretty cool.

Steve (Brooklyn)

Is there no chance that Yuri can put on a good show? In his last two fight he looked more exciting to me.

Dan Rafael
  (12:37 PM)

His last two fights looked exciting? You must have missed the pure agony of the three rounds of the Bundrage fight, which had the crowd booing about 20 seconds into the fight. You must be on drugs.

Kevin (Denver)

So, has "The Messenger" retired? Seems like he went to the Allan Green school of fight management...

Dan Rafael
  (12:38 PM)

Anthony Thompson is easily one of the most disappointing fighters I have ever covered. Awesome talent, sky-is-the-limit potential and turned out to be a gigantic dud. It's too bad.

Ken (Toronto, ON)

Dan-jelina Jolie, I'm sure you know more about Kelly Pavlik than I do, but he thrust himself into stardom with what appeared to be pure class. I am shocked about the recent rumors about my favorite athlete. Could you think of any more shocking (possible) revelation about a boxer who seemed to be such a class act?

Dan Rafael
  (12:39 PM)

Nothing really shocks me.

Brian (DC)

In terms of action, Soto-Valero and Cotto-Pacquiao would have a chance to match or top Arce-Hussein/Morales-Pacquiao I from a few years ago.

Dan Rafael
  (12:39 PM)

I agree.

Christopher (Linz, Austria)

Hi Dan, any update on Chazz Witherspoon? Haven't heard of him since backing out of the Drumond fight.

Dan Rafael
  (12:40 PM)

He fights Aug. 29 on Prize Fight's Internet PPV card.

Rui (Nutley, NJ)

Dan, do you know when tickets for the Top Rank October 10 card go on sale?

Dan Rafael
  (12:43 PM)

Hot from the Bat Instant Message courtesy of Top Rank PR king Lee Samuels: They go on sale Aug. 28 - 10 am on ticketmaster and at MSG - 245.50 ring, 145.50, 70.50 and 45.50.

Sam (Buffalo, NY)

Dan,did you see where the WBA said they "don't know" if their belt would be on the line for the Valuev/Haye fight? That organization is completely worthless.

Dan Rafael
  (12:43 PM)

No kidding.

Concerned Fan (USA)

Isn?t it a bit weird that Pacquiao-Cotto hasn?t been declared a sell-out yet? Haha got two extra $750 tickets to scalp, hoping to get at least double on them.

Dan Rafael
  (12:44 PM)

It will sell out. I think when you have only about 1,000 tickets left out of more than 16,000 that's pretty darn good after they've been on sale a few days.

Bry (SF)

What percent do you give Valero-Soto of happening?

Dan Rafael
  (12:45 PM)

I don't know but I think pretty good as long as Valero gets a license in Nevada. Top Rank will start that process officially next week they tell me.

Mikey (Levittown, NY)

During the MMA fight this weekend, Showtime seemed to say that Abraham-Taylor would be tape-delayed and Froch-Dirrell would be live. Can you confirm that?

Dan Rafael
  (12:45 PM)

That is correct. That is what Showtime told me and I know I wrote it somewhere.

Erik (New York City, Queens)

Any word on James Kirkland?

Dan Rafael
  (12:46 PM)

I answer this every week -- he is in prison. He will be sentenced in late September. He is gone until at least next spring most likely. I will not answer this question again unless something chnages.

Jason (San Diego, CA)

Have you heard any response from Golden Boy Promotions on the feedback to their atrocious card for last week's Friday Night Mismatches?

Dan Rafael
  (12:47 PM)

I spoke to Richard Schaefer about it this week. He put it very simply: He was not happy and he let his staff know it this week.

Craig (Philly)

I think Harry Joe Yorgey is a live dog, no pun intended, to defeat Angulo...What do you think his chances are?

Dan Rafael
  (12:48 PM)

I think Angulo's pressure and chin may be too much but Yorgey will come to fight, which is all you can ask for.

Lamont (Bayonne)

Can you please explain why promoters put options in contracts and why fighters agree to options when fighting an opponent?

Dan Rafael
  (12:50 PM)

If you have a ton of money invested in your fighter and you give a non-optional opponent a free shot at that fighter, wouldn't you want to protect yourself in case your fighter loses? That's why they get options. You may not like it but that is the way the business works and I don't have a problem with options within reason.

Anthony (Sacramento)

Dan a few issues back in Ring Mag. they posed the question: Who would win a fight between Aaron Pryor vs. Manny P. at 140. Who do you like in this fantasy matchup?

Dan Rafael
  (12:52 PM)

Obviosuly a great matchup. Not sure but I know Manny is a big hitter and fast starter and Pryor went down a lot, especially early. I could see Manny knocking him down early and Pryor coming back in a war.

C.M. (Canada)

I have tickets to Pacquiao-Cotto, and am absolutely disgusted by Bob Arum?s choice to put Santos-Foreman on the televised undercard. They should be paying me $750 to suffer through that crap.

Dan Rafael
  (12:53 PM)

Go to the restroom during the fight. Go buy a program. Get a pretzel and a soda. Call your mother to tell her you love her. It is what it is.

Angel (Carson City)

What a stand-up guy Roach is - he freely admitted his fighter should have been disqualified.

Dan Rafael
  (12:54 PM)

Agreed. Freddie did say that about Concepcion's cheap shot on Luevano last week. Freddie's complaint was that the ref said it was intentional and Freddie said it was not.

Tom (Reading, United Kingdom)

Are you disappointed that Rogers Mtagwa will be Juanma's next opponent? Surely they could have gotten a better more interesting opponent.

Dan Rafael
  (12:54 PM)

It's not the best opponent, I agree, but I know Mtagwa, who is a bit bigger than Lopez, will come to fight and is usually in good scraps.

Mark (Brooksville, Fl.)

Dan,A shout out to and for Nick Charles. With nothing but solid, positive good thoughts for a complete recovery......may Nick k.o. his cancer!!!

Gary Burton (Beaverton, OR)

Dan, is Joan Guzman vs. Ali Funeka still going to happen, and if so, when?

Dan Rafael
  (12:56 PM)

It may happen Nov. 28 on the HBO undercard of Bute-Andrade 2. It is one of the possible bouts.

Chris (Dayton, OH)

Hi Dan,Read your notes from yesterday about Shaq "fighting" Oscar...here's a dumb question - why didn't he "fight" someone his own size, like say - Wladmir?? Boxing with Oscar - c'mon...

Dan Rafael
  (12:56 PM)

ABC wanted Oscar, who is still the biggest star in boxing even if he is retired.

Jose (phoenix)

Hey Dan you have any news on Victor Ortiz

Dan Rafael
  (12:56 PM)

He had wrist surgery after his fight with Maidana and probably is out the rest of the year.

Brian (Sacramento, CA)

Dan,What's your take on the whole Pavlik situation?

Dan Rafael
  (12:57 PM)

See what I have to deal with every week?

Greg P ( Staten Island,NY)

Dan, does Winky fight before 09 is over...who is most likely opp?

Dan Rafael
  (12:57 PM)

Very doubtful Winky goes again this year.

Greg P ( Staten Island,NY)

Dan, I'm getting almost as sick of Kelly Pavlik's excuses as I am of hearing about Brett Favre's return!!!

Dan Rafael
  (12:58 PM)

Amen brother Freak.

Greg P ( Staten Island,NY)

Dan, any chance to see Mosley/Clottey by years end?

Dan Rafael
  (12:58 PM)

That is a possibility if the Berto fight doesn't happen.

Rui (Nutley, NJ)

Shaq also fought Oscar instead of Wlad because one right hand from Wlad, even if he took it easy, would put Shaq to sleep.

Dan Rafael
  (12:59 PM)

It was an exhibition. It was not meant to be a truly serious fight. Hopefully, it's entertaining and makes for a good TV show. I am looking forward to seeing it.

Dan Rafael
  (12:59 PM)

No, no, no. YOU wake me.

Dan Rafael
  (1:00 PM)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child. I wish had some solid news on Joel Julio, but as far as I know there is nothing in the works for him.

Al (Indy)

Good job in the notebook as always, but hasn't Paulie lost the right to complain about his status as second banana in this fight? His showing against Hatton was far too underwhelming (unlike his tough Cotto fight), thoughts?

Dan Rafael
  (1:00 PM)

He isn't complaining about being second, he is complaining about what he feels is unfair treatment.

Raul Jr. (Everett, WA)

Any word on Hopkins-Adamek?

Dan Rafael
  (1:01 PM)

Still being discussed by the promoters and HBO. I hope it happens. It's a no-brainer fight to make.

Pete (DC)

Dan, got $300 tickets to Pacman-Cotto which are as nosebleed as the $150 tickets. I am feeling a little buyer's remorse.

Dan Rafael
  (1:03 PM)

I am not sure where each section starts, but MGM is good to watch a fight at wherever you are.

Bucky (Denver)

I thought Alvarado was out because of an injury. Can you shed some light on what he is in prison for?

Dan Rafael
  (1:03 PM)

They said it was an injury but he was jammed up in legal issues. I believe he is in because he violated his probation terms with a DWI or DUI.

El Frigador (LaGrange,Ky)

What kind of fighter will Margarito be when he comes back? Does he get a shot at a title?

Dan Rafael
  (1:05 PM)

I have no idea, but he's not getting any younger. He shouldn't get a shot at a title right away at the very least because he got destroyed in his last fight. I honestly couldn't care less if he ever fights again. By trying to load his gloves he committed a mortal sin in boxing.

Jonathan (Northern, VA)

Would you favor Mosley against both Clottey and Berto?

Dan Rafael
  (1:06 PM)

I would make Shane the favorite in both fights, but they are both interesting fights.

JL (San Diego, CA)

Finally saw Assault in the Ring a couple of days ago. Holy crap about Resto's confession of using the exact type of plaster knuckle pad material as Margarcheato. Ban Margarcheato for life!

Chris (Los Angeles CA)

D$ - If Pete from DC is unhappy with his purchase I will be glad to take those tix off his hands.

Dan Rafael
  (1:08 PM)

Did I say it was intentional? The ref ruled it intentional and it was a brutal foul. But I do not know if Concepcion did it on purpose or not and I never said he did.

brent (Toronto)

How do you think Tim Bradley would do against Marcos Maidana?

Dan Rafael
  (1:11 PM)

Good fight! Maidana is a good puncher so if he connects flush Timmy would be in some trouble. But Timmy is a good boxer and fast. I think it would be the kind of fight Bradley would be winning and Maidana would be stalking and looking for the late knockout. Can Bradley stay away? I'd like to see that one.

richard (oxford, uk)

hey dan, just wondering if you've ever covered any fights ringside from outside America?

Dan Rafael
  (1:11 PM)

I've covered fights in Mexico and Puerto Rico in addition to all over the United States.

Stephen (St. Louis)

Dan, even though Nevada will only allow fighters that have had brain bleeds in the ring after extensive testing, I'm still nervous. It seems like only a matter of time before something goes wrong. I love valero as a fighter, but I get really, really nervous every time he goes in the ring because of that.

Dan Rafael
  (1:13 PM)

I understand where you are coming from but Valero has had a ton of fights since he was first banned in the US. Ultimately, you have to on what the medical evidence says. It's also Valero's life.

Jack (NY)

Excited to see Floyd Mayweather on WWE this week?

Dan Rafael
  (1:13 PM)

I think it will be fun. I'll have to DVR it because I won't be around to see it live.

Keith H (Seattle)

Newbies, here's what not to do: Don't ask about James Kirkland, he's still in jail...There is only ONE Ricky Hatton...Tyson vs. Ali questions will get you banned. Have I covered enough, Dan?

Dan Rafael
  (1:14 PM)

Decent start.

Jeremy (Boston)

October 10th top rank card in theatre or main arena?

Dan Rafael
  (1:15 PM)

Theater.

Aaron (Hartford)

Whats going on with Andy Lee ?

Dan Rafael
  (1:15 PM)

He's supposed to fight tonight in Indiana.

BJ (LA)

Who is Vanes fighting on Oct?

Dan Rafael
  (1:15 PM)

Still TBA.

JL (San Diego, CA)

Wow! I just saw that the AMC movie theatres around San Diego are showing the Mayweather/Marquez PPV for $15! I think that's a great way to expose boxing to new fans and I hope they do that more in the future!

Frank Booth (Lumberton, NC)

Dan-Vasyl Lomachenko update...?

Dan Rafael
  (1:16 PM)

I don't know for sure but I assume he will be competing next month in the World Championships in Milan, Italy.

Toby (Houston)

Staph infection vs. shower door for a diamond belt! Who you got?

Dan Rafael
  (1:18 PM)

I'll take the infection.

Chris (Columbus, OH)

Awesome DVD pick. Casamayor's hook that knocked Katsidis down in the final round was electrifying, especially after he climbed (back through the ropes and) off the canvas.

Dan Rafael
  (1:18 PM)

I could have picked some other Katsidis fights also. He's always in good fights.

Dan Rafael
  (1:19 PM)

The chats are even better because they are not two months out of date! Nothing new on Mosley-Clottey other than it is a possibility and Schaefer and Arum have discussed it and it can be made, they both told me.

Joey (NYC)

if Bute vs Andrade was a top rank fight, what would be the chances of it being on HBO?

Dan Rafael
  (1:20 PM)

Zero.

John (San Fran)

Dan, you said in the Notebook that Sat. is Danny Jacobs HBO debut, but wasn't he on the Pac-Hatton undercard? just curious

Dan Rafael
  (1:20 PM)

That fight was not televised on HBO.

Ryan (Cleveland)

In your opinion, would you shell out 25$ for the Camacho Jr. card here next week?

Dan Rafael
  (1:20 PM)

I wouldn't shell out $2.50 much less $25.

Josh (Richmond, VA)

If Pavlik really is struggling with a staph infection, it's kind of scary to think of how many athlete's in the Cleveland area contract staph infections. Several Browns players have had issues...makes me want to make sure that I never get sick in northern Ohio!!!

Pedro (Puerto Rico)

D$ what do you think about Carlos Negron the cruiserweight from PR? He's huge, does he have potential to be something special? Can he maybe go up to heavyweight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:22 PM)

I saw him live in AC in June. Really, really big dude and seems to have good power. He's a bit uncoordinated and has to work on that but he's only had a few pro fights. There's plenty of time for him to work on his technique.

travis (boise)

Katsidis vs Graham is great

Dan Rafael
  (1:22 PM)

One of the best fights you will ever see. Totally wild.

Dan Rafael
  (1:24 PM)

As I wrote last week, Bika could end up against Balzsay on the Nov. 28 HBO undercard. Balzsay fights this weekend in Hungary as part of the WBO convention. Eric Gomez of Golden Boy is going to the fight and convenction to continue discussing the fight with Balzsay's handlers if he wins his fight on Aug. 22.

RonMack (Cincinnati)

Kelly Pavlik knows his reign is over as middleweight king. B-Hop provided the blueprint and The Punisher was about to implement it. Pavlik should surrender the title and let PW beat whomever to claim it.

Jack (Balt)

Dan, Doesn't it seem as if Paulie is blaming his failures on the rest of the world; first buddy mcgirt, now, assuming he fails, the referres, judges, golden boy, etc. Time for him to man up and face the music that he can't break a grape with a punch. I agree with you that he gets stopped.

Dan Rafael
  (1:26 PM)

I never heard Paulie blame Buddy for anything. he was just very angry that he stopped the Hatton fight.

travis (boise)

Paulie Malignaggi and Ishe Smith on HBO is why boxing is suffering

Dan Rafael
  (1:27 PM)

I don't agree with that at all.

Danny (Puerto Rico)

Hello Dan, would you rather see Juanma face Caballero or Gamboa? Who would you think would win the fight in either case?

Dan Rafael
  (1:27 PM)

I'd like to see either. I believe Juanma vs. Gamboa would be more exciting in the ring.

Christopher (Linz, Austria)

If a fighter wins a WBC belt, he has, according to the rules of the WBC defend it in his first fight against a WBC mandatory. Has the IBF the same rules? Want to know it because of the Cloud-Woods fight.

Dan Rafael
  (1:28 PM)

A fighter who wins a VACANT WBC title must make his first defense against a mandatory. The IBF does not have that rule.

travis (boise)

Why is boxing suffering then, it gets no hype outside of Pacman and Mayweather

Dan Rafael
  (1:31 PM)

Yeah, it gets no hype in the UK or Germany or Mexico or Japan or Australia or a million other places.

Kevin (Denver)

How bad is/was the break in Wilder's hand?

Dan Rafael
  (1:31 PM)

According to his co-manager, Shelly Finkel, he broke two fingers and it will keep him out for a couple of months. It didn't sound like anything too serious.

Ed (Portland OR)

Idaho gets no hype outside of potatoes, that doesnt mean nothing is happening there.

Marc (Philly)

Why so many questions about sanctioning belts and what not. By talking about it gives them free publicity. I think great fights are great fights belts or not. I propose a one-week strike on mentioning any sanctioning body or belt?

Dan Rafael
  (1:32 PM)

I propose you be banished.

Nate (Harrisbur, Pa)

did anything ever happen with the whole Bradley-Campbell headbutt issue?

Dan Rafael
  (1:33 PM)

The California commission has a hearing on the matter on Monday.

Banishment (h3ll)

We're hyped for Travis - welcome to Banishment!

Jeff (Phoenix)

D$,You were right about the quality of the card in Tucson last week. However, me and my boys were there front row and it was still outstanding to see the fight live....spoke with Deontay after the fight, his is a cool dude, very humble, we talked about China and he showed me his right hand which was very swollen.

Dan Rafael
  (1:34 PM)

That's great that you had a good time at the live fights. Now imagine how great of a time you would have had if the fights were really good?

Josh (Richmond, VA)

I don't remember Marc from Philly having any issues hyping belts when his man Cunningham held a strap...

Dan Rafael
  (1:36 PM)

Whether the result is changed to a no contest or not won't matter. There is probably not going to be a rematch. Bradley was making an optional defense so the sanctioning body won't order a rematch and what network would pay for that again? Nobody really is interested in it again and Bradley has lots of other interesting options, including a due mandatory against Lamont Peterson.

R! (Yay Area)

Is the Rigondeaux FNF card the only one being done this Fall/Winter? Or are we getting any more?

Dan Rafael
  (1:37 PM)

It's a one-shot deal right now and technically that one is not an episode of FNF, just a boxing special on a Friday night.

Rags (NYC)

Please tell Winky to close his school of boxing business. First he negotiates his way out of most fights, and then takes a one-sided beating following up with his first card as promoter gets cancelled because paperwork was not in order....

Dan Rafael
  (1:38 PM)

It didn't help that his main event fighter got injured (Peter Quillin).

phil (buffalo)

Hey dan i remember when ricardo mayorga almost beat shane mosley. Is ricardo done? Or is he going to fight soon?

Dan Rafael
  (1:39 PM)

LOL. Mayorga didn't almost beat Shane. He was losing the fight and then got knocked dead. As for Mayorga's future, there is nothing remotely in the works.

Kevin (Denver)

Do any of King's fighters have anything in the works? Scares me that Alexander may not fight again til next summer given King's track record...

Dan Rafael
  (1:41 PM)

It's sad but there's nothing up with any of his fighers right now as far as I know. I even checked in with the DK office today and there's nothing up other than Santos in a mandatory on another promoter's card.

travis (boise)

Then why was Mayorga winning on one judges scorecard

Dan Rafael
  (1:43 PM)

Because that judge was blind. And even if that is the case, he was down on two scorecards and then got DESTROYED. Maybe you missed the last few seconds of the fight? Were you outside frolicking in your potato field?

Cris (OH)

Just moved into my first house, hooked up the 52" LCD, and got my HBO

Dan Rafael
  (1:43 PM)

Wonderful.

Mark (WI)

Travis from Boise=Billy Dib

Dan Rafael
  (1:45 PM)

The first two are Oct. 17.

Randy (FLA)

If there was a hall of very good, would Fernando Vargas be inducted?

Dan Rafael
  (1:46 PM)

Of course.

Sam (NJ)

Do you think Pacquiao training outside of the country for a little while will hurt him?

Dan Rafael
  (1:47 PM)

It shouldn't as long as he is focused and serious about his training. If he is, it should be no problem. As far as I know, he'll do part of his camp in Mexico before going to Los Angeles to finish.

Roger (CA)

Speaking of being a first-time homebuyer, I'd like to thank Dan and all the taxpaying freaks for my $8,000 tax credit for buying my first home this year. It will pay for my HBO/Showtime package for the next 29 years!

Dan Rafael
  (1:48 PM)

I repeat: Wonderful.

Christopher (Linz, Austria)

ANY chance a John-Gamboa match could happen?

Dan Rafael
  (1:49 PM)

There's always a chance.

RonMack (Cincinnati)

If PBF beats Marquez, and I believe he will, does PBF have to look good/great in winning to get back to #1 PFP? If it's a not so great looking win, where does PBF fall on your PFP list?

Dan Rafael
  (1:50 PM)

I will determine that after the fight.

Rick (Marina, Ca)

Arreola's plan is to come out guns blazing according to his trainer. Is that smart or dumb?

Dan Rafael
  (1:52 PM)

Probably his best chance.

Sean (NJ)

do you think HBO sub-titles every episode of 24/7 so we can understand Roger and Sr.?

Dan Rafael
  (1:52 PM)

Not sure but you can perhaps turn on the closed captioning on your cable or dish?

Pete (DC)

Dan, hopefully HBO doesn't ignore Roger's penchant for beating women in 24/7.

travis (boise)

Dan you need to start a video blog on youtube once a week you could talk fights and prospects

Dan Rafael
  (1:54 PM)

No I don't unless, of course, you are going to pay me.

Dan Rafael
  (1:55 PM)

I think if the fight happens, the winner of Valero-Soto could absolutely get a shot at Manny. Not every single fight Manny does is going to be the biggest fight ever. If for whatever reason, a bigger fight can't be made, there's nothing wrong with him fighting a quality opponent like that winner.

Mike (New York)

Do you do radio appearances at all to talk about a big upcoming fight or boxing news in general?

Dan Rafael
  (1:57 PM)

I do radio interviews all the time all around the country and numerous internationally.

Erik (Atlanta)

true or false: A fighter said the only way he'd fight George Foreman III is if he got a foreman grill?

Dan Rafael
  (1:57 PM)

True.

Dan Rafael
  (1:58 PM)

Why did you have to remind me?

Dan Rafael
  (1:58 PM)

Yes.

Dave (NJ)

PBF vs. JMM pay per view buys. Over/Under 500,000?

Dan Rafael
  (1:59 PM)

Over.

Joe (San Antonio)

We've seen PBF fight Big Show, Shaq knock the Big Show out of the ring, and now Oscar vs. Shaq.....now we need to see Oscar vs. Big Show.

travis (boise)

Cotto vs PAC over/under 1milli

Dan Rafael
  (2:01 PM)

Under.

Rick (Marina, Ca)

Thanks to espn for providing a good card for friday night fights on Aug 28 which will be my birthday.

Dan Rafael
  (2:02 PM)

It is a good card so maybe I'll consider it a birthday present too since mine is a few days before yours.

Sam (Chicago, IL)

I know you said you have no interest in Women's boxing at the Olympics, but what do you think of the idea that it's good for the sport overall because it will open to door to more women being fans. I think more boxing fans = more money = bigger and better fights.

Dan Rafael
  (2:04 PM)

I have zero interest in women's amateur boxing. ZERO.

Chris (Columbus, OH)

Miranda-Mayorga... you'd watch.

Dan Rafael
  (2:04 PM)

Sure.

Dan Rafael
  (2:05 PM)

OK, Freaks, thanks for the chat. Hope you enjoy your weekend and Saturday's HBO card. Talk to you next week. Peace.
