Grabbing that second cup of coffee... Welcome back. I had last week off (did you miss me?) but I'm back for the next hour of Fantasy Chattage. Who's up first?
Lost Harang! Please rank replacements (H2H) as I prepare for playoffs: Pettitte, Sanchez, (gasp!) Zito. Thanks.
I'd definitely go with Andy, as the NYY crew is playing very well and should rack up the W's going forward, but yeah, Zito is actually not that far behind.
Morning AJ! should I trade markakis for justin upton in a keeper league. deadline if friday! please help.
I think I'd keep Markakis. Both are solid players, but I think that over the next few seasons, that Orioles lineup is going to emerge as a fierce thing to behold.
AJ Lilly and Wandy are both available in my league, I will drop Kershaw, which would you pickup?
I've been a Wandy guy all season, and never had had too much faith in Lilly. Plus, the Cubs are in a downward spiral I fear they're not getting out of anytime soon.
Impact of Edge in Seattle?
I'll answer a few NFL Q's, as we're at that time of the season... Duckett is already cut, so I think we'll see Edge as the No. 1 guy by Week 1. Lower Julius accordingly.
What's the latest on Johan?
He's definitely out as of today, and really, why would the Mets not shut him down for the rest of the season regardless of how bad the test results are? In a one-and-done league, it's time to let Johan go.
Short and sweet: Smoltz or Pedro?
Pedro. Yeah, Smoltz did well back in the NL, but 5 IP is the max. I'll take Martinez and the run support.
I'm going to bench Alfonso Soriano (and maybe Raul Ibanez). Who is the best OF replacement: Travis Snider, Matt LaPorta, or Marlon Byrd?
I think it's Byrd, but LaPorta certainly worth taking a chance on.
If you were KRod, would you just fake an injury to try to avoid this Mets injury curse?
Funny stuff, Daniel. Actually, I think if K-Rod attempted to fake an injury, he'd probably get hurt in the process.
NL only keeper - pick one Uggla, McCutchen, Chipper, or McLouth.
McCutchen for the long term. Hey, only two more years until the Bucs trade him to the AL East.
Huge fan AJ. I am in an interesting, yet slightly boring, league for the first time this football season...an all TD league. I've read the articles already, just wondering if there are any other pointers you could help me out...anyone you recommend I strongly consider draft day?
I hate TD-only, since it's basically a roll of the dice. I'd take my QB Round 1 and then after a few studs, I'd load up on double-duty guys like Leon Washington and other return guys.
Would you trade Mauer in a keeper league? I have a shot this year and a guy is offering me a Sandoval (C eligible), Kemp, and Halladay
Always play for this year if you can. You may never get back to the top of the mountain. Make the deal, and you still have three solid keeper candidates.
the Manny dilemma: Play or bench?
I think you have to play him, but obviously, a 17 point drop in batting average in a week in undesirable. Still, as that pennant race tightens a bit, I think he'll step it up.
AJ, Karabell says Zobrilla is top 50 next year. What are your thoughts? Hard to argue with the productivity, isn't it?
I think it's pretty close. Right now I'd probably have him on the outside looking in to that group, but it's not a far-fetched proposition - especially when you factor in positional scarcity and whatnot.
late trade deadline and there was a very questionable trade between a playoff contender and a mathematically eliminate team... they do not know one another... but the team in the playoffs getting a sweet deal. playoff team sends Mark Reynoolds, Ortiz, Y. Escobar, and Scherzer for Bartlett, Longoria, Hoffman and VMart. Veto? No veto?
No veto. If you wanted to put a rule in place that prohibits deals from eliminated teams, and quite frankly, I think it is a good idea to do so in non-keepers... then you could have. Otherwise, you have to let deals go through if you don't think there is collusion.
AJ, who would you rather have in a utility spot the rest of the way, Hafner or Blanks?
I'd rather have Travis, but that's mostly because I don't think Blanks is going to be productive enough in that lineup - suffering from "Ad-Gon Syndrome" there.
trade is fine WOW really!!!!
Assuming that this is a criticism of my last answer... if you allow trades, then allow them. Don't judge them. You shouldn't say trades are allowed and then say, but if a team is in last place, we'll veto it. Hardwire that into your league rules and let owners own their teams - for better or worse.
any useful fantasy insight from last night's football game? Clowney, despite a funny name, looked good, sleeper?
Sanchez coming back to throw the TD after the early troubles was promising... but this Jets offense, other than Leon Washington is not exactly world-beaters for 2009. I love the Jets D, and Ray Rice... liking the Ravens passing game a little bit more with Mason back...
no it was of the question not your answer. people need to let people manage their teams. if that deal helps him climb out of last. that guy is crying over spilled milk. bitter he didnt make the deal
Thanks... couldn't tell. And I agree.
AGon isn't suffering that much. I guess considering his HR and BA he should have more runs and rbis, but I think overall, his owners (including me) have gotten more than bargained for on draft day.... thoughts?
At the beginning of the year, maybe. But with 30 HRs, I should be looking at top-20 instead of top-35. He could have been so much much more! That's where the disappointment comes in.
Is Mark Ellis a better fantasy 2B than Orlando Hudson? What about Chris Coghlan if he has 2B eligibility?
Assuming Hudson's groin isn't going to force him out for a long stretch, I like him of the trio.
Hi AJ! Commish/Rules question. We use team QB's. In Philly were Vick may be used in the wildcat, is that still a QB? How about if Vick and McNabb are on the field at the same time?
Great Q. As for the way ESPN and other stat services will make the call I do not know, but I would think that Team QB should only be the starting QB (McNabb in this case) and not include the Punter on a fake, or any other direct snap... To me the point of Team QB is simply to eliminate an owner from being penalized due to an injury to the starter.
Will my boy get regular playing time if called up???
Pinch-running once a game, yes. More than that - I doubt it.
Span has been red hot, take him over franklin Gutierrez?
Absolutely. Ride the heat.
Wigginton, C. Davis, Jake Fox for the rest of the year?
Fox, but I'm not thrilled with any of the trio.
What's your thoughts on my boy, Braylon Edwards this year? Bounce back or drop city like last year? I think the state of Ohio is infecting him.
I think he's a risky pick due to the QB situation regardless of who wins... but just throwing this out there... maybe he drops Quinn's pass in the end zone b/c he wants Anderson to win the job. If so, that negative attitude may carry into Week 1 with Brady under center.
Missed you AJ. Do you feel that Arroyo will continue his solid 2nd half production tonight at the Brewers; and possibly going forward? Thanks for your valuable guidance season!
I just don't feel any level of confidence when it comes to Reds pitchers... Dusty ruins staffs. I firmly believe that. Bronson is a spot-starter at best. Take a chance vs. Milwaukee -- sure. But he's one to re-evaluate each and every time out.
Best endgame RB flier -- James Davis, Greene, Tashard Choice, Edge James?
All have pros and cons - Edge didn't sign to sit, so I'd put him first. I personally like Choice second, as either MB3 or Felix is bound to get injured at some point.
Commish question....I play in a 10 man public league and about 4 teams are dead and have been for a while. One of those teams had a fantastic draft and was leading the league for the first few months....then he started to fall in the rankings. One team noticed that the commish was changing that teams lineup so it would fall in the rankings and now the commish is in first place. Would you consider that cheating even though the team was dead? Thanks!
Would I consider it breathing for someone to inhale and exhale?
I can't find any information on Corey Hart's recovery or prognosis for September..can't wait for Ms. Bell on Friday...have you heard/read anything?
Just that he's not likely to be back until September after the appendix removal. I think, like the appenidx, Hart is a vestigial organ to be ignored.
Who's the next WR in your rankings after Fitzgerald? Trying to decide between the Johnsons and Moss.
I love Megatron this season.
Doumit's been struggling as of late, drop him for Posada?
I do like Posada better, yes.
Hey AJ, dont forget us! who is the best bet for HR/RBI the rest of the way? Thome, Papi, Guillen, Cust, or Butler?
Butler has been one of those super-sneaky players all season, creeping slowly towards Top-50 production. He's my guy.
AJ- first off, big fan of Mass Confusion. Second- strategy Q-- when your league has an innings limit, do you try to sit typical studs (as it's a shallow league) in risky starts throughout the year, or just play it cool til later in the year and THEN start watching matchups? THANKS!
Many thanks Johnny (referring to my blog) - find me on Twitter for a link... I think you start your studs all season long - until you get towards the end of the year. Every pitcher is going to have a few starts like Halladay had yesterday, and trying to predict it from your aces is foolish. That's not to say you don't go with your gut, but it's generally not going to pan out.
keeper for 2010: wright or mauer. why?
Mauer - because he's a C. But Wright is still a first-rounder IMO.
AJ, dillema - in a points based keeper league that counts Ks heavily - pick two to keep - Grienke, Vladdy, Wainright, Josh Johnson, Raul Ibanez? The hitters are both nearing arthritis, makes this hard...
Greinke and Johnson. Age before beauty, but live arms before geriatrics.
With his inconsistent play this year, has Wieters lost his keeper viability or are you still a believer?
I never thought Wieters would come up and be a Triple Crown threat. You get spoiled by a Braun and Longoria - and the truth is, most rookies struggle. No change in the luster for me...
Hey AJ! I saw that you love Ray Rice, so who would you rather keep: Ronnie Brown in the 4th round or Ray Rice in the 11th? ...Keep in mind this a league where you can keep a player as long as you want, but each year you keep him moves him up a round. Thanks!
Rice. I think he gets the No. 1 job outright and is well worth an 11.
You believe in the Curse of 370?
I don't believe in any statistical anomaly like that - because it is an arbitrary number. Now, does more wear and tear in one year have a chance to hurt the player's production the next? Absolutely. But to say 370, as opposed to 360 or 380? Not on board.
Elijah Dukes, Milledge, or Travis Snider for the final OF spot in 5x5?
Matsui going to continue his hot streak? What is his momentum ranking?
He's at a 8, but I don't think he'll keep it up for too much longer... more of a matchup play still for me.
Smoak gets a shot in Texas next year?
I do believe so - also expecting a few ABs in September to whet the appetite.
some guys that are high on the momentum?
Peralta, DeJesus, F. Lopez, Helton, Butler.LOW - Bourn, B. Phillips, Cruz, McLouth
AJ!!! Any word on Sandovals injury last night??? The dude has carried me this year and I need to know if it's time to panic!
Tight calf... doesn't sound too serious. I would not panic.
If they're low on the momentum scale, does that mean they'll be rebounding soon?
JoJo, pos (high) momentum means better relative stats going forward. Neg (low) means a slump is approaching or should continue.
People are high on Romo, by extension are you high on Roy Williams? What kind of forecast do you see?
I am not high on Romo... I think the Cowboys rely much more heavily on the run this year, hurting Romo's stats. In addition, the increased RB load is why I think the Cowboys might need all three backs at some point this season.
Folks, that's the buzzer! Thanks for the Q's... we'll be back again on Thursday. See you all on Twitter... And we'll see you the next time on "Villa Alegre"
