Welcome to a hot day on the West Coast. Yes,I'm a long way from Charlotte, N.C. Getting a few days of RR before end-of-the-season run. It's a pretty quiet week with Cup drivers taking the week off as well, but I'm sure you have lots of questions. Fire away.
Will Bill Elliott or anyone else have the new Ford engine at Atlanta?
Ford officials told me they wouldn't roll out the new engine until the Chase, and it likely would be with a Roush-Yates team now. Makes sense since Roush-Yates developed it. They should have first crack.
Nationwide question here for ya David......If Steven Wallace's father did not own a race team would he have a ride anywhere else?........The guy is a caution waiting to happen.......Surely Rusty isn't thinking about taking him to Cup anytime soon is he?? Thanks for your time......
That's a tough one to answer, and to be honest I haven't studied him enough in the Nationwide Series to give a fair answer. But Rusty is a smart man. If his son wasn't good enough I'm sure he would make a change at some point.
Hell David, After reading your article on RCR, do you think the loss of Bobby Hutchens, along with the addition of the 4th team have factored into their problems this year?
I don't think the fourth team has anything to do with it, but I agree the loss of Hutchens has been a factor. He's been a major reason Stewart-Haas has gotten off to a strong start. I remember at Daytona in February when Tony went off on Goodyear. Bobby stepped in and told him he can't act that way, that cooler heads have to prevail. He's taken much of the pressure of being an owner off of Tony and allowed him to drive.
What is latest on what Kevin Harvick may be doing next season?
Nothing new to report. Richard Childress still contends he'll hold him to 2010. It wouldn't surprise me though if Harvick announced after the season that he has signed a deal with Stewart-Haas for 2011 and force Childress' hand.
Have you any insight as to what the big changes are at RCR?
Not a lot. The people I talked to were somewhat vague, but they do believe the changes will improve the team.
QUESTION TO DAVID NEWTON AT 2.20 PM HI DAVID WHOS YOUR PICK FOR ATLANTA NEXT SUNDAY
I'm going to stick with Kyle Busch. He's under the gun and I believe he'll respond.
David,Any updates on the Harvick situation? Another DNF adding to a miserable season. Him and Mears don't even speak to each other. Bowyer can't be happy about their wreck on Saturday night. Why doesn't Richard just let him walk? Shell could still end their sponsorship with RCR without Harvick leaving, can't they? It's obvious that a change of scenery is what Harvick needs and Stewart-Haas obviously has their 3rd ride waiting on him.
He is making life hell for everybody at RCR I am told, but Childress isn't in a position where he can let a top name driver go with current sponsor obligations. They did make a run at Keselowski I might add that would have made letting him go easier.
Last week I touted Junior's chances at Bristol and you mockingly (I think) called me "Hopeful in Seattle". I still think Junior will put some good runs together at Richmond and Atlanta, and based on how things are going (and since he will be in a position to go-for-broke) is probably going to be the favorite at Talladega.
I can't argue with you on either point. He did have a good run at Bristol and perhaps things are turning around for his team. It would be good for teh sport if they are.
It looks like you covered alot of big races and games all over sports, which, if you could pick, was your favorite to cover?
Tiger Woods winning his first Masters remains No. 1. That was covering more than an event. It was covering history. After that the Carolina Panthers' 1996 run to the NFC Championshp was pretty special, as was the run to the 2003 Super Bowl. And one of those moments I'll never forget came at a high school track meet when Stephen Davis of Spartanburg High beat Tim Montgomery of Gaffney in the 100 meters. Stephen went on to become a star back at Auburn and the NFL. Montgomery became the fastest man on the planet before a steroid issue.
What are your thoughts on Hendrick's possible NSCS lineup in a few years with Kelly Bires being named the Number 1 guy to get that 88 nationwide ride and Rick saying that he could always bring Brad K back?
Bires could happen if he isn't allowed to run for two different manufacturers. As for bringing Brad back, that was Hendrick's way of complimenting him. Don't take it too literal.
Looks like Boyer was acting like a cry baby and a brat Sat. night at Bristol. How come the fans used to slam Kyle for that kind of behavior and give Boyer a pass?
First, it's Bowyer. I didn't see him acting like a crybaby. He was taken out twice by accidents that weren't his fault. He was frustrated. One of the problems _ and pluses _ with NASCAR is drivers don't have a cooling off period like athletes in other sports do after events. We get raw emotion, which from my perspective is good.
What will Kevin Harvick be doing next year? RCR? SHR? or something else?
Looks like RCR right now, but stay tuned.
Joey Logano is 19th in points this year. Do you think he will make the chase next year?
Were it not for his tough start he'd be in contention now. So yes. He has too good of equipment.
How good was it to have the #4 back on the track
I'll be honest, it was such a non-factor I didn't pay it much attention. But it's always good to have the car on the track.
Why the delay in the official announcement of the Brad K. signing? Any indication on the length of the deal and do you really believe Brad will only do a year or two with Penske and head back to Hendricks?
They aren't ready to announce it I would assume. Maybe they are being kind to Stremme. I would guess it's a three-year deal. Most are. I'm sure Penske wants to protect him as long as he can.
David, you have to get a new picture up on this site. Is that a microphone near your neck? It looks like you have some odd growth or something.
Hey, I'm in Vegas as well. And I'll check on a new photo.
You're not missing much David, it's hot here too. Historical sense, how big would it be for Smoke to win a championship the first year with his own team? I know it seems big because it's in the present, but can you give us some perspective.
It would be significant and good for the sport. I still say JJ is the favorite though.
Hey Newt, I was wondering if RPMs manufacturer change all depends on if Kasey Kahne makes the chase or not? because i really hope he and budweiser dont switch to toyota.
Not at all. And I believe RPM now will remain with Dodge. Toyota's Lee White said he hopes that happens as well. Not what you say if you're trying to get that team to your side.
Do you think we will see Childress forming a technical alliance with Henrick sort of like Stert-Haas to improve the teams performance?
I can't see that. They have good engines. Look at Montoya.
hey david, how much do u think the tire combintions they use every year affect the champion?
It's the same tire for everybody. Maybe some drivers handle it better than others, but I wouldn't say that's why Johnson has won three straight.
what are the chances we see Kasey Kahne driving for Stewart-Haas in 2011?
40-60. Heck, I don't know.
Will Brad K. really sign a short term deal with Penske in order to return to Hendrick's for the 5 or 24 ride? Seems to make a little sense for Penske if Hornish is in it for the long haul and with Allgier a year or so away from the big show - but if he runs well i doubt he'd want to let him go so easily.
I don't think Penske is working a deal so Hendrick can get him back.
Any news on the new Nationwide COT?
There's talk it may be delayed till 2011 to help teams save money. Haven't heard much more.
Seems like Childress isn't a hands on owner like JD Gibbs or Jack Roush. Is that part of the problem at RCR plus Richard is getting up in years?
First, J.D. isn't the owner. He's the president, or as he likes to say, "I only work here." And Richard is very hands on. I don't see that as the problem.
What ever happened to the law suit Childress filed against GM for non-payment?
There never was a lawsuit. Don't believe all you read _ unless it's on ESPN.com, that is.
hey david, do you think "wild thang" kyle busch will win the coveted 2 championships in one season? seems hes under the radar for the sprint cup and hes got the nationwide pretty much wrapped up.
This would have to be the year. He doesn't plan to run a full Nationwide schedule in 2010. And I believe he will be a factor in the Chase.
hey newt, whats the latest on the rumored sadler mears switch?
You must not have paid attention last week to ESPN Insider. That was just another false rumor.
Assuming Kyle wins at Atlanta or Richmond and enters the chase with 5 wins and Martin stays at 4 will Kyle's 50 point lead make my the 09 Sprint cup championship favorite?
Until somebody beats Johnson he will remain the favorite.
It seems everyone is always eager to label Dale Earnhardt Jr as the most overrated driver. Why is Harvick never in the conversation? Outside of the Busch series, he hasn't really done much. I know he won the Daytona 500, but if the caution had come out 10 seconds earlier he wouldn't have. Other than that, what has he really done? Has he even reached double digit wins yet?
To put it simple, the expecations on Harvick aren't close to what they are on Earnahrdt.
On double-file restarts, is NASCAR planning to make any changes to the procedures regarding lane choice? It seems sensible to make all of the odd-placed cars line up behind the leader, especially like at Bristol where the outside line was clearly preferred.
Nothing I've heard of.
Do you expect Kyle to win at both Chicago in the truck race Fri. night and Montreal Sun in Nationwide?
Maybe Chicago, but I'd go with Ambrose in Montreal.
I think it was Hinton who last week indicated that there would not be any more night races than there are because they don't want to kill the local Saturday night tracks... BUT- with The Chase, wouldn't it be a good move to have more than 1 night race that doesn't compete with NFL football?
I don't think NASCAR is worried about killing local Saturday night racing. I believe more Saturday night races in the Chase would help the ratings battle. Going head to head against the NFL on Sundays is a no-win situation.
Wats ur favorite sport
david, i believe jimmie johnson should have 5 championships in a row. you go back to 04, the ole kurt busch tire incident, and 05 he made a huge push in the chase. i believe if he dont 4peat, hes still the best ever. What u think?
I agree. He's been good enough for sure.
Hey David, what are you up to out here on the West Coast?
Just hanging out, getting some sun, relaxing.
How would you feel about a Road Course in the chase and possibly under the lights. I am an advicate for Watkins Glen being my home track but maybe take California's new chase date and stick in Virginia International.
I'd vote Yes now. And I like the idea of putting it under the lights.
what do you think about Kahne winning this week newton? Im the first to tell you....
Haven't given it much thought. Your pick has been duly noted, though.
I is not one to coment on other peoples sartorial splendor, but did you see Bifle wearing a black shirt/tie to meet the Pres??? Come on...thats slppy and disrespectful!!! Did you get to be part of that?
I did not. But as I did mention last week I dressed up as Obama for Halloween last year.
Are we going to eventually see the sprint cup run the mustang like the nationwide?
Not in my lifetime.
My man David Ragan had two good runs in a row do you see him returning to last years form. I'm actually feeling confident he wil run good at Atlanta
He's way over due. He's been one of the biggest disappointments of the season.
We loved seeing Kyle give the winners flag to that little girl who is a Kyle fan at Bristol. Is Kyle starting to take fans away from Dale, Stert and those older drivers?
Not sure he's taking away, but he's starting to build a solid base. And that was a great gesture. He really is a nice guy below the punk surface.
Is Joey Logano going to be the future jimmie johnson like his nick name "sliced bread" tells us?
I like what I've seen thus far. But he's a long way from Johnson.
Meet you at the NASCAR cafe and we can do the 6lb burrito challenge.
I am hungry. Starved to be honest. A 6 pound burrito sounds intriguing. I've done a few of those challenges with huge hamburgers before.
Do you think Kyle Busch is just passing a few years at Gibbs before go back to Henrick to take over the #24?
EVERY year it seems there is a truly unexpected Silly Season move - last year is was Ryan Newman to SHR (if I had to pick). Anyone unexpected you've got your eye on or is Harvick really the only guy?
Harvick is the only big name out there and he's tied to 2010.
Any word on Sadler yet? I'll be interested to see where he ends up.
Again, he's got a deal at RPM through 2010. Also sponsor ties.
David, is this the best race to the chase to date?
The 2004 season was pretty good. But this one may be better because you have two drivers with a third of the wins on the bubble in Busch and Martin, with one all the way out.
Henrick seems to let all the good young drivers leave like Kyle, Vickers and now Brad. Is his plan to bring back Kyle later?
Vickers asked to leave. He wanted to be his own man. Kyle was asked to leave and I don't see him returning. There wasn't room for Brad. The good news for Hendrick is he's good enough to attract all the top drivers.
Kurt Busch has been fast all season and the 12 has been junk that would probably be because stremme is terrible right? You think with keselowski next year the 2 and 12 will be able to share some good info and be up there with gibbs hendrick and roush
There's a lot wrong with the 12 team that goes beyond Stremme. I know I pick on him a lot, but you can't put all of it on him. Having said that, I do believe Keselowski to be an upgrade.
Do you think Casey Mears has finally found a home in RCR. He has quietly put together a decent season.
Decent? Isn't he around 20th in points? You call that decent? Do you think Earnhardt Jr. at 21st is having a decent season? Wow.
Hey! Do Nascar Drivers wear Diapers when they race?
Is Marcos Ambrose's performance any indication on how Truex will be running with MWR next year. What it will be like with good drivers behind the wheel?
Ambrose is the real deal. It'll be interesting to follow his career. And having good drivers is the key. Look at what Stewart-Haas has done with two good ones.
Newt not gonna lie Ambrose has far outperformed my expectations of him, you think he can win a race or 2 next year?
Yes I do.
I am kinda worried about my man JPM's chances to make the chase. The last 2 races he has given up 100 points to 13th. Do you think he will still make it? Or will the team fall apart under the pressure?
I believe he'll make it, but nobody from 9-12 is safe.
Seems to us like Kyle or Vickers are just passing time at Gibbs and Red Bull. How soon before we see Kyle and Vickers going back to Henrick?
Lot of questions about drivers returning to Hendrick today. I just don't see Busch. Maybe Vickers one day back in the 25 Ricky Hendrick owned.
David,Whats new on the RPM Toyota front and drivers?
Looks like they are staying with Dodge. Nothing new on the drivers.
As a team owner, who would you rather have on your team - Harvick or Kahne?
hey newt any news on testing with its permenantly gone or if nascar is thiking about bringing it back.. i personally hope they dont because this year has been so competitive its great
All indications are things will remain the same for next season. The economy still remains a huge issue in the sport.
David, give me a young talented driver who is not even in the nationwide circuit yet so i can change my driver.
Hmmm. Can't help you there. How about a young Nationwide driver? Maybe Austin Dillon down the road.
I hadn't really focused on the end of the year races until recently, but it really isn't the most exciting crop of tracks out there...no Richmond, Bristol, Darlington...granted no Pocono or Michigan, but, in general its not an exciting group...they gotta mix up the schedule a little...
I agree, Darlington belongs. So does Bristol. I like Richmond where it is.
Is Red Bull staying with Toyota next season?
Newton, when will you be on Nascar Now?? Today? pass along that we want an old school new school segment again thanks
I was scheduled for this week, but had to be out of town so was taken off. I think McGee vs. Newton was a pretty good combination a few weeks ago.
I'm gonna go ahead and drink the Kool Aid and say that Dale Jr and the 88 bunch get it together over the last 12 races, pick up a win somewhere along the way, and rally to finish 13th at the end of the year.
It'll take more than Kook Aid to get to 13th.
Are Stewarts recents problems on the track an indication that Henrick has shifted 100% attention to his 48, 24 and 5 cars?
Not at all. It doesnt' work that way.
Does Kahne make the chase?
Probably. Possibly. He did fall out last year around this time.
Who is the most famous person to ask a question in one of these chats who you knew to be legit? Tank?
He'd rank up there with my top celebrities.
I hear Atlanta might lose a date in 2011 to Kentucky. Don't you think theres a better track to choose from then Kentucky
That appears to be the scenario.
david, last week scott speed cracked out a top 15, is this a sign of things to come b/c of red bulls obvious horsepower?
Um, too early to call that a trend.
You think the chase would be better if all 10 races were at Dega??? Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeehaw!!!!
Would be unique for sure.
Does Kyle use a different rear end gear or is he really that much better that the others on restarts?
Not that I know of.
Hey...i'm a huge Kurt Busch fan and i was so aggravated saturday night about the restarts. No one seems to realize that the older Busch had the car to beat at the end and kept getting stuck on the inside on restarts...please vouch for me!!
C'mon. Johnson was the car to beat until they had that pit road mistake.
Do you think the new bristol is like the old bristol. I mean it still one lane except now its the top lane
Not at all. It's a two-lane track now. The old Bristol was one all the way. But you are right the high line does seem to be preferred, at least on restarts.
David, any news on Jamie McMurray's situation?
Hearing he is close . . . maybe to EGR.
Will Carl Edwards be running a Ford engine in that DP car at the Rolex race at Montreal?
That would be my guess. I don't know for sure.
Hi David What position will Jeff Gordon have at Hendrick when he retires? Also do you think he could be a good crew chief?
No on the crew chief. Not to say he couldn't, but it's not what he does. As for his position, Jimmie's got a lot of years left and you would think he would surpass Gordon's four titles.
hey newt, lets do old school new school right now? LOL
I'm ready. I assume you want to be old school. Fire away and I'll post you up.
david, is there anything classier then mark martin getting out of the car, thanking the fans, praising the teams cars, and saying he wont get into you to win the race?
He is a class act. Reminds me of former NFL coach Dick Vermeil. A bit sappy. Always ready to cry.
Do you think Denny Hamlin will have a big impact when the Chase starts or has he raced all of his good tracks for the year?
I like Hamlin a lot in the Chase. He's had a solid season and easily could have a win or two more.
If Mark Martins finally wins a championsip do you think he will finally REALLY retire?
Not for at least another year. It wouldn't surprise me if he went another two or three years.
If you had to pick the next Mark Martin (classy guy, close but no cigar on titles), whom would it be?
Kyle Busch. Just kidding. How about Jeff Burton.
alight newt, im sick of all these drivers like kyle busch, brian vickers arguing after the race. tell you what they need a good ole visit to the nascar trailer. what happens in the trailer, stays in the trailer. what u think?
I personally like all the drama, but I am a bit tired of Vickers whining about Busch. Win a few more races and maybe we'll listen.
How come Speed hasn't suspended or punished Mr Ken Wallace for calling Kyle Busch ugly on the post race show?
I missed that one. Did he really do that? Hey, it's one man's opinion. I don't think you suspend him for that.
David, I read where McMurray knows where he's going nect year but it's up to the lawyers, where do you think? Also, any idea about if EGR goes to Ford or sticks with Chevy?
I believe that to be true. Stil betting on EGR. And no Ford for EGR. The Earnhardt part has an engine partnership with RCR.
how bout all these drivers complaining about aero loose aero loose. If they were built like the cale yarboroughs and bobby allisons they would be able to wheel around the race cars old school style.
You mean stocky? And all that talk is tiresome. The car is what it is. Drive it and get over it as Carl Edwards and others have done. And there's no coincidence that the drivers in the best shape are winning more races and finishing higher. OK, so Stewart is an exception.
Will we ever Little E drive the 8 again?
I doubt it, but it wouldn't surprise me to see him end his career in the 3.
What manufracture do you think might be the next to join NASCAR?
Honda or BMW.
It's time for me to head down to the pool or slots . . . some place far from my laptop. That 6 pound burrito sounds pretty good as well. Wonder if they can bring that poolside? My friend from Vegas should look into that for me. Until next week, enjoy.
