Chat with Bill Williamson

Rex Hughes (Modesto)

What is the Brandon Marshall situation looking like? It appears he is continually Milking the Broncos.

Bill Williamson
  (2:05 PM)

It seems to be a fluid situaiton. He is with the first team now, so let's see. Still not sure if he will play Sunday against the Jay Cutlers. Marshall better get on the field soon. He needs the work.

Craig G. (Fairfield, California)

Hey Bill, what's your take on how Larry Johnson is looking?

Bill Williamson
  (2:06 PM)

The Chiefs are happy with Johnson. He has bought into the program. He looks good and I think he will have a big season if he stays healthy.

Mike (Israel)

Knowshon or Bwells?

Bill Williamson
  (2:07 PM)

Knowshon.

Corey (D.C.)

Does Legedu Naanee have a chance to make an impact for the Chargers, or is he more of a preseason flash-in-the-pan?

Bill Williamson
  (2:08 PM)

This needs to be the year for this guy. He has a lto of talent and big-play ability. I expect him to get more chances this season than in the past.

Still Love the Raiders...no, I'm not crazy! (Bakersfield, Califo

Any work on Chaz Schilens? What's his time table?

Bill Williamson
  (2:09 PM)

I'd say 5-7 more weeks.

Jeff M. (Parker, CO)

Bill will Andre Goodman continue to get burned Dre Bly style in Denver? It seems to me that so far hes the same player only older.

Bill Williamson
  (2:10 PM)

The Broncos love him. He's looked good so far. He could be a big help. He was good in Miami last year. Health is that guy's biggest challenge.

Shawn (Toronto)

Do you think the Chiefs would be wise to deal Tyler Thigpen? I like the way he makes things happen on the field even though he isn't conventional. I think he would be an ideal backup to bring in when the offense is being shut down. Its not like Gutierrez has done anything on the field. A 5th seems like a low return for a young qb. What are you hearing?

Bill Williamson
  (2:12 PM)

I like Thigpen, Shawn, but that ship has sailed in K.C. he is not in the Chiefs' plans. So, if they can get a fifth rounder for him, they ought to do it.

KingKev (Austin TX)

I am not trying to be funny with this post, but I read an article today about DHB making a difficult catch during practice, and therefore he is showing signs of improvement. Im not making this up. Is he struggling so much that the media needs to be alerted when he makes a decent catch?

Bill Williamson
  (2:13 PM)

I'm with you, King. The dude was the No. 7 pick. He was paid $23 million. He better be able to make decent catches.

Blake (Arkansas)

Is Matt Jones going to land somewhere before the season starts?

Bill Williamson
  (2:14 PM)

The best bet may be the Titans.

Matt (Chicago)

Bill, I haven't seen any of their preseason games yet. How does Oakland's run defense grade out?

Bill Williamson
  (2:15 PM)

I'd say a Z. They gave up 275 yards against S.F. last week. the Riaders were 31st agaisnt the run last seosn. They must improve.

Cody (Charlotte)

Why did'nt the chiefs just stick with thigpen as the starter? He had a good season last year with less wepons than matt cassel did.

Bill Williamson
  (2:18 PM)

There was no way the new leadership in K.C. were going to keep Thigpen. They wanted their own guy. It's too bad for Thigpen, because he showed a lot of heart last season.

Jake (Cedar Falls (IA))

Haven't heard much about Robert Ayers this preseason. Difference maker or more Jarvis Moss material?

Bill Williamson
  (2:19 PM)

Ayers has been quiet, but it's way too early to consider him to be a bust. He's going to play a lot this year.

Canadian Raider (Earth)

Why is Russell criticized so much for what he has done in practice? Isn't that the time to work out the kinks? He has looked solid in both preaseason games making good decisions.

Bill Williamson
  (2:21 PM)

He's looked OK in the preseason. The Raiders are being very careful with him. Still, there hasn't been the command shown that you want to see by a top quarterback.

george (new york)

Hey Bill, big fan, what is going with knoshown moreno? how much longer will he be out, and will he be back before the season begins?

Bill Williamson
  (2:21 PM)

He should be ready for the start of the regular season.

Bill (Mississippi)

Are the Radiers going to finally give the ball to DMAC 20 times a game?

Bill Williamson
  (2:22 PM)

They should. He is their best offensive weapon. If he can handle the load, why not. He needs his hands on the ball.

Jeremy (New Zealand)

With the Broncos bringing in four new safeties over the offseason, what do you think the chances are of Josh Barrett making the team? I thought he was impressive late in the season when he got his opportunity.

Bill Williamson
  (2:23 PM)

I think Barrett has a chance to make the tema. He's an interesting prospect who made some nice plays as a rookie.

Sam (NYC)

Orton is a viable bridge/fill-in QB, but do you see the Broncos going QB in Round 1 next year? It looks like they'll have a decently high pick and there will be some good QBs available (Bradford, McCoy, Snead, etc.) that McDaniels could choose from and put his stamp on.

Bill Williamson
  (2:25 PM)

In theory, that is great. But Denver gave up its No. 1 pick to Seattle to take nickel corner Alphonso Smith with the No. 37 pick this year. Smith is a nice player but if that pick is a top five pick and Denver gave away a chance to take Colt McCoy, yikes.

Matt (Chicago)

I think Sproles looks better that LT. Am I alone here?

Bill Williamson
  (2:27 PM)

It's just the preseason. Give LT time. But I expect Sproles to look good. The dude is a weapon.

Shawn (Toronto)

Can we officially declare the Vikings the winner in the Jared Allen trade?

Bill Williamson
  (2:27 PM)

Yeah, go ahead.

BroncoLen (l.a)

Why would Denver get rid of Marshall for a 1st and 3rd when they already paid 2 rookies a bundle of money this year. It doesn't make sense for Denver to even seek another 1st rounder and a 4th for Marshall.

Bill Williamson
  (2:31 PM)

The Broncos don't want to give up Marshall, but a first and a fourth would be enticing. The Broncos like their receivers and getting back a top pick could be interesting to the team.

antonio rodriguez (san juan texas)

What about them Cowboys? Playoffs?

Bill Williamson
  (2:32 PM)

Better be or there will be in toruble in big D.

Mo (KC)

Love your work, B-Will. Glad to see you didn't get swept up in the tornado at Chiefs training camp - probably a little to chilly to enjoy some of the Chiefs' otter pops at camp?

Bill Williamson
  (2:33 PM)

No otter pops ... This one is getting a little stale, JK and GF.

Nacho (Denver)

A Dallas question in the AFC chat?

Bill Williamson
  (2:34 PM)

Why not, I'll throw a bone once in a while.

Canadian Raider (Earth)

How many times do you think Lechler will hit the new scoreboard in Dallas on Thanksgiving?

Bill Williamson
  (2:36 PM)

Well, the Raiders may have to punt a lot so it could so he may wear that screen out.

Jose Corona (Puebla)

Bill love the column. I'm on it every day. Do you think Cromartie will have a 5 int year?

Bill Williamson
  (2:37 PM)

Yeah, It's not going to be 15 pick like he promised last year, but I think Cromartie could be good for 5-8 picks this year

Bitterrooter (Montana)

Is San Diego the only team over .500 in the AFC Worst at year's end?

Bill Williamson
  (2:38 PM)

Yeah, I kind of think so.

Canadian Raider (Earth)

Why all the Raider hating Bill? Buck the trend and join the bandwagon.

Bill Williamson
  (2:39 PM)

Now what did I do?

Taylor (Pinson,AL)

How long before we see Jamal Charles starting for the Chiefs?

Bill Williamson
  (2:40 PM)

I think Charles will be in the mix, but LJ will eb the guy this year until he proves he can't be.

ray(sarasota) [via mobile]

what kind of potential do you see in the rookie tight end myers out of oakland.

Bill Williamson
  (2:42 PM)

He showed great potential against S.F. He made four nice catches. He was supposed to be a blocking specialist. But he looks like has some nice hands. That could have been a great pickup.

Jeff (MN)

Hows that Baker guy from Denver looking? Any chance of a start at nose by the end of the season? Thx Bill!

Bill Williamson
  (2:43 PM)

They love him. He is a stout guy. He seems like he cna really plug the whole. I think you'll see him a lot this year.

Ryan (Phoenix)

With Cutler coming back to Denver, do you think McDaniels will dial up more blitz packages for the defense?

Bill Williamson
  (2:43 PM)

Now, that would be interesting, wouldn't it?

Brian (San Diego)

Bill, keep up the great work. Anyways, you had a column about Oakland's Zach Miller being the AFC West's breakout player, but who do you think will be the other breakout players on the other teams in the division?

Bill Williamson
  (2:45 PM)

Good question. Here's a few: Peyton Hillis in Dnver, Branden Albert in K.C. and Antoine Cason in S.D.

Canadian Raider (Earth)

What do you think is the main reason for the Raiders poor run defense? Is it the coach? the scheme? the players? fundamentals?

Bill Williamson
  (2:46 PM)

I think it's personnel. The coordinator changes, so let's go with personnel.

Jose Corona (Puebla)

Do you see Chambers at #3 or #4 receiver with the emergence of Floyd and Nanee

Bill Williamson
  (2:46 PM)

I still see Chambers being the No. 2 for now.

Damon (Doha)

Can we declare the Donkeys dead yet? With that schedule and that QB... They dont stand a chance!

Bill Williamson
  (2:47 PM)

I'm nto sure about dead, but I don't like their chances.

Brandon (Columbus)

Will San Diego's O-line be at least average?

Bill Williamson
  (2:48 PM)

I would think so, but thsoe four sacks allowed last week was scary.

SprungOnSports (Long Island)

In the division, can you name one or two players from each team under the most pressure to succeed?

Bill Williamson
  (2:48 PM)

Den: Orton. KC: Cassel. Oak: Russell. SD: LT.

Craig G. (Fairfield, California)

Hey Bill, best O-line in the division?

Bill Williamson
  (2:49 PM)

Denver. It's one of the best things that team has going for it and it will give Orton a chance.

ray(sarasota) [via mobile]

have you heard anything more with derrick brooks signing with the raiders now that morrison is banged up?

Bill Williamson
  (2:50 PM)

They re-signed Nap Harris, so brooks may not be an option right now.

moe (oakland ca)

where is michael mitchell he seems to be quiet

Bill Williamson
  (2:51 PM)

He's been hurt. He may not be ready for the season opener.

Matt (Philly)

What do you think Oakland or Denver will offer the Eagles for Vick before next year's draft?

Bill Williamson
  (2:51 PM)

Nothing.

Todd (Coralville, IA)

who is going to play the wes welker role in denvers offense? does that change if marshall is dealt?

Bill Williamson
  (2:51 PM)

They really love what Royal can do in that role.

Bob (Colorado Springs)

Hey Bill, how is Brandstater doing so far? I'm kinda excited to see him play.

Bill Williamson
  (2:53 PM)

He's making srides. You will see a lot of him in the fianl preseason game.

Al (Denver)

You mentioned the Broncos gave up their 1st rounder (probably a bad move based on how they'll do this year), but don't they have the Bears' 1st rounder next year? Any shot at a QB there?

Bill Williamson
  (2:53 PM)

The Bears will likley be in the No. 16-22 range, so all the star QBs may be gone.

City of Denver (())

How bout them Rockies?

Bill Williamson
  (2:54 PM)

Truth be told, I'm a Giants fan. So the Rockies are killing me. Monday night was murder, man, murder.

Matt (Philly)

Care to expand on why Denver or Oakland wouldn't trade for Vick after this season?

Bill Williamson
  (2:55 PM)

They both had a chance to sign him this year for nothing and they didn't bite. Why would they trade for him next year?

Craig G. (Fairfield, California)

Hey Bill, I thought I heard you on the Football Today podcast say you grew up here in NoCal and had Raiders tickets. Where are you from originally?

Bill Williamson
  (2:56 PM)

That was NFC West blogger Mike Sando. But I'm too from the Bay Area.

ray(sarasota) [via mobile]

who has a better career. louis murphy or dhb? i say murphy.

Bill Williamson
  (2:57 PM)

I'm kind of with you, Ray. Murphy can be a nice possession receiver.

Ryan (Phoenix)

I have seen reports that Orton has no deep ball capability. In preseason I have only seen the dink and dunk. Can the guy throw the deep ball? Are they going to wait until Cincy to unleash it?

Bill Williamson
  (2:59 PM)

The deep ball isn't Orton's thing. You want see it much.

Jimmy (Boston)

How many yards do you think Cutler will throw for, Im definitely going with 4000 yds, whats your take?

Bill Williamson
  (3:00 PM)

Sure, if he gets some cooperation from his line and receivers. I think Cutler is a terrific player, bhut he had much more offesnive talent around him in Denver.

Jeff (MN)

Kyle Orton or Tyler Thigpen?

Bill Williamson
  (3:00 PM)

For Denver> I'd say Orton. Justa better fit.

Bill Williamson
  (3:00 PM)

Ok, folks, great hour. Thanks. Talk to you next week.
