Chat with Dan Rafael

Dan Rafael
  (11:59 AM)

Greetings Fight Freaks! Welcome to our weekly chat. Sorry to say, no notebook today as I have been on vacation most of the past week (family cruise), but there is still plenty to discuss. We have a terrific season finale of FNF tonight with Urango-Bailey and Woods-Cloud doubleheader and we can go over last week's HBO tripleheader headlined by the disgraceful decision in the Diaz-Malignaggi fight. Anyway, let's get to it.

Jeff (Redondo Beach, CA)

Great fights last Saturday night. I am not one to normally feel bad for Paulie, but getting ripped off like that is just not right.

Dan Rafael
  (12:01 PM)

I agree. I thought Paulie clearly won the fight. Even if you don't think he won the fight, a 118-110 scorecard turned in by Gale Van Hoy is not acceptable.

Ronaldo (Ronaldoville, CA)

Dan based on the information you've gathered, is this whole ice rink fiasco going to jeopardize the PBF-JMM fight taking place?

Dan Rafael
  (12:02 PM)

I probably read what you've read and have no inside scoop on it as I have been away on a boat in the middle of the Caribbean but it doesn't sound like the fight is in jeopardy.

Kris (Bethpage)

Dan, Im dyin here whats going on with pavlik-williams...i was all set to go to a.c in october so depressing.....

Dan Rafael
  (12:03 PM)

The fight definitely is not happening in October. Right now, it is in limbo with Pavlik getting an independent medical report on his finger. However, assuming he is medically fit, the fight likely will be rescheduled for December in Atlantic City.

Bing (Philly)

Before Saturday, I despised Paulie. but since then, he's made a fan out of me

Dan Rafael
  (12:04 PM)

I've heard that from a lot of people. Paulie is an emotional guy and I did feel bad for him with the way it went down since he had been warning everyone and their mother for weeks before the fight about the very thing that happened. He objected to Van Hoy and Caiz as soon as they were assigned.

travis (boise)

good fights tonight on espn, abner mares looked good last night on versus. What are the chances that we get to see some heavyweights on undercards.

Dan Rafael
  (12:05 PM)

We have a great card on ESPN2 tonight and I agree, Mares did look good last night. I am glad to see him able to continue fighting after a serious eye injury. As for heavyweights -- I wish there were some good heavyweight prospects to put on the undercards.

Besim (Staten Island, New York)

While you were on your cruise, I prepared 70-80 questions for this chat. Freak Status?

Dan Rafael
  (12:05 PM)

More annoying than freak.

Mikey (Levittown, NY)

Any chance of some sort of punishment for the wretched scorecards last weekend? The media has been brutal and even the Texas Commission has to be feeling some heat.

Dan Rafael
  (12:07 PM)

Very unlikely. It's like an umpire calling balls and strikes. Unless there was evidence uncovered that a judge outright was bribed or something (which I DO NOT THINK HAPPENED SO WE ARE CLEAR) the result will stand. But it makes you wonder what fighter would ever go to Texas again for a meaningful fight where there is such an unlevel playing field.

Kris (Bethpage)

Dan, it seemed like the hbo announcers were bashing paulie a little for going off after the fight. Dont you think we need someone to call out a horrible decision when there is one. Seems like it helps to me

Dan Rafael
  (12:07 PM)

I thought HBO was a little soft on the decision but they called it out as a poor one and Harold Lederman, HBO's experienced unofficial judge had his card displayed, which had Paulie winning.

King (NYC)

Dan, considering Korobov's age, don't you think Top Rank should bring him up a little faster?

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 PM)

Not at all. I think he's moving along just fine. He's had regular activity since he turned pro and he is now in six-rounders. It won't be long before he is in eight-rounders. When it comes to building a pro fighter from 0-0, nobody does it better than Top Rank, so I defer to their outstanding matchmakers Brad "Abdul" Goodman and Bruce Trampler.

Brian (DC)

I understood Paulie's objections to Van Hoy based on what he saw as incompetence.... but I thought he was out of line to question Caiz's ability to judge a fight without bias based on being "Mexican."

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 PM)

He also questioned Caiz because of some questionable handling of other Golden Boy fighters. It was not ONLY because he was Mexican-American.

Rick, (Marina)

Can't that judge be fired, for having such a horrible scorecard? The guy obviously ain't doing his job what more proof do you need?

Dan Rafael
  (12:10 PM)

He should be.

Mrs. DTM (back on land)

Freaks, thanks for letting me borrow the man for the week.

Tomas (Texas)

any updates on Sugar Shane?

Dan Rafael
  (12:11 PM)

Shane will likely fight in December against either Berto or Clottey. Golden Boy says he's going Dec. 5. That could wind up moving to Dec. 26 but nothing is set as of yet. It depends on what happens with Pavlik-Williams.

Joel (Eastchester, NY)

Paulie's statement about why people don't watch boxing that much is very clear with scorecards like that, who wants to watch when something like that happens?

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 PM)

I agree. Bad decisions really turn people off. And, again, it's not so much that the judges had Diaz winning. It's that one card looked like Malignaggi didn't show up, which is not legitimate.

Rick, (Marina)

Is the Valero vs Soto close to a done deal?

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 PM)

Not yet.

Rick, (Marina)

What were your thoughts on Guererro's performance? He needs to work on defense.

Dan Rafael
  (12:13 PM)

I thought Guerrero fought one of his best fights against one of his best opponents. He gets hit, sure. But he looked very good to me and can become the No. 1 junior lightweight with his ability. His people would like to match him with Soto if Soto-Valero doesn't happen.

Jeff (Redondo Beach, CA)

Have you had a chance to read Floyd's chat from yesterday? The freaks gave it to him pretty good. And those were just the questions he handpicked! I was hoping Brian Kenny was sending in some questions also.

Dan Rafael
  (12:14 PM)

I didn't read it yet, but I am sure he had nothing but fluff answers as usual. He ducks the hard questions like he has top welterweights.

mike (costa rica)

DAN, your picks for tonights fights please

Dan Rafael
  (12:15 PM)

I like Bailey to stop Urango in a mild upset and I like Cloud to stop Woods.

Banishment (Dan's Basement)

Bring me Gale Van Hoy, and bring him now.

Michael (Long Beach, CA)

Decision aside, I didn't think that Diaz looked that great. I don't know where he wants to fight; 135 or 140, but I think guys like Bradley, Holt and Alexander would have their way with him.

Dan Rafael
  (12:16 PM)

I thought Diaz looked OK. Not great by any means. I think against the top dogs at 140 he will have a lot of trouble, especially against the faster, slicker, bigger guys like Bradley, Holt and Alexander.

Pete (Salt Lake City)

Is eddie chambers trying to line up another fight now that Klitchko is hurt, or is he just going to wait it out?

Dan Rafael
  (12:17 PM)

I would think his handlers would try to get him at least a stay-busy type fight but they would also have to get approval from the IBF so he doesn't lose his mandatory status. It remains to be seen if and when and who he fights. But it would make sense to have at least one more fight if the Klitschko fight isn't going to happen until the spring.

Mark (ATL)

Floyd in a chat yesterday said that Mosley had a chance to fight him in 2006 but opted for a different fight. Any truth to this? How close were these two ever to fighting?

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

They were talks back and forth a couple of times. At one point, Mosley elected not to fight a third bout after his second Vargas fight. But Mayweather also opted out of the fight as well.

Charles (Philly)

Good to see that the California Commission did the right thing in the Bradley-Campbell fight, I guess (though I agree with you that Nate was looking for a way out). But it only makes the D.C. Commission's refusal to do the same for Anthony Thompson look worse.

Dan Rafael
  (12:19 PM)

I agree. The California commission did the right thing, even though it looked like Nate didn't want to continue anyway. The DC commission is a joke and has been. I have lived in the area for about 10 years and the commission here has always been woeful in that period of time.

Steve (Sac,Ca)

Dano, reading that Floyd chat yesterday made me want even more for Marquez to give him what he deserves. I wonder if he'll speak about himself in 3rd person if he has a L

Joe (Stamford, CT)

Gale Van Hoy's scorecard took the heat off of Laurence Cole, who was horrible, as usual, in the two fights he refereed. Is Texas the worst of the state athletic commissions, or does it just seem that way?

Dan Rafael
  (12:21 PM)

Texas has some issues, put it that way. Laurence Cole has had some issues in fights and he should never have asked the judges about whether a cut was caused by a headbutt. That, from my understanding, is against the rules.

jeff (Phoenix)

Dan,Bought tickets for the Jirov fight yesterday....great venue in Phoenix and it's the same day the Super Six starts. I didn't realize it till my wife told me...I would like to nominate her for freak status

Dan Rafael
  (12:21 PM)

Impresive.

Randy (SINY)

That exchange between Hopkins and Jones was definitely entertaining, especially since it should be Jones running from Hopkins at this point

Dan Rafael
  (12:22 PM)

Those dudes have been going back and forth foever. Frankly, I am a bit tired of it. Either make the rematch or don't, but stop wasting everyone's time with the nonsense.

bill (pgh)

good idea to put Money-JMM in movie theaters?

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

Tremendous idea. The movies theaters will advertise the PPV for the next few weeks on their screens and whatever they generate in theater sales will just add to the bottom line of the closed circuit revenue.

Benvenuto (Miami)

Hey Dan.....I'm curious what your thoughts are around Tavoris Cloud as fighter in general. Yes he is fighting for a title, and yes hoe obviously deserves it, but he isn't a "top tier fighter" yet is he? Do you think he has the potential to headline "must see fights"?

Dan Rafael
  (12:24 PM)

Based on his style and his power, sure, he has the potential. Beating Woods will give him a belt and at least make him legit. I view him as a guy who should be in the top 10 with a win, but I do not view him yet as a guy who deserves to fight for this belt based on his accomplishments. But he has a pleasing style and is still in his 20s, so I am looking forward to seeing him against a veteran former titlist.

Briks (Philly)

Any thoughts on Tor Hamer, the young American heavyweight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:24 PM)

He got dropped the other night and having seen him a few times so far in his career I have been wholly unimpressed.

Ronak (NY)

If Mayweather wins, could you see him calling DHL out of retirement?

Dan Rafael
  (12:26 PM)

He can do what he wants but we're not going to see a rematch of that fight.

Andy (Ventura)

Dan, what did you think of Abner Mares yesterday?

Dan Rafael
  (12:26 PM)

I thought he looked good considering he has to still be concerned about his eye and was working with a new trainer. He is supposed to be back on the Sept. 19 undercard and I think he'll fight for a belt in the next 2-3 fights.

Ian (Pembroke Pines, FL)

Should Freddie Roach be concerned about Manny's current distractions (movie appearance, training camp in Philippines, etc)?

Dan Rafael
  (12:27 PM)

Freddie always has something to worry about with Manny's training camps. He is used to it.

Brian (DC)

If you had to guess, will it be Berto or Clottey against Mosley in December?

Dan Rafael
  (12:27 PM)

Flip a coin.

Benvenuto (Miami)

Since Floyd avoided my questions like I was a top welterweight yesterday in his chat, I'll ask you DTM.......when Floyd Maywether REALLY retires......does he wins on his resume over either Cotto, Mosley, or Williams??????

Dan Rafael
  (12:28 PM)

Who knows? One thing I can say is that I very much doubt we will ever see him fight Williams. The other fights? All depends on how things work out.

BJ (LA)

What's next for Paulie? Ortiz maybe?

Dan Rafael
  (12:28 PM)

Diaz should give him a rematch.

Ian (Pembroke Pines, FL)

I also really like the idea of Cotto potentially using Ivan Calderon as a sparring partner to simulate Manny's speed.

Dan Rafael
  (12:29 PM)

They are also friends and actually had an amateur fight against each other way back when.

Andy (Ventura)

Dan, do you think Paul Williams will ever fight at 147 again?

Dan Rafael
  (12:30 PM)

No.

Garth (CT)

I see this new chat format still has some bugs in it... Is there no way for them to go back to the old software or are you stuck with this one?

Dan Rafael
  (12:31 PM)

This is it. I do not control what we use. So get used to it.

Bry (SF)

Any thoughts on Bradley signing with Dunkin?

Dan Rafael
  (12:32 PM)

I was a bit surprised but it's obviously good for Cameron Dunkin. Bradley is a top young titleholder. If Bradley felt like he needed management, Dunkin certainly knows how to move guys and is very experienced. What will be interesting is to see how Dunkin and Gary Shaw, Bradley's co-promoter, deal with each other since they basically hate each other.

E ((Omaha))

From Floyd's chat transcript yesterday: "I Fought the best fighters of my era and never losing" Good thing I was sitting down after reading that gem

john (nj)

24/7 for Pac/Cotto?

Dan Rafael
  (12:33 PM)

Yes.

Pete (Salt Lake City)

Is the Rigondeaux fight on Sept 18th on espn 2 not related to FNF? What made espn air that fight after their "boxing season" ended? Are they going to air any other non FNF fights through the winter?

Dan Rafael
  (12:33 PM)

It's a "boxing special" as the network has programming airing related to Hispanic Heritage Month. As far I am understand, it's a one-shot deal.

BOXREV (Orange County, CA)

You ever see local fights around where you live?

Dan Rafael
  (12:34 PM)

Sure.

JP (Vegas)

D-Moola...Ishe Smith is one frustrating fighter to watch, not because he can't fight, but because HE CAN but doesn't throw his hands. I think he's wasted his talent to some degree because technically he's always seem very solid...

Dan Rafael
  (12:35 PM)

I can't disagree. Ishe is a talented guy but he seems to do enough to lose in his biggest fights, if you understand what I mean. But Jacobs clearly beat him even though Ishe didn't fight badly at all and came to win, not just to survive.

Dan Rafael
  (12:35 PM)

The fans.

Sam (Penn State)

Danny Jacobs is having a phenomenal year. Does he anything set up for the remainder of the year?

Dan Rafael
  (12:37 PM)

Jacobs is moving quickly and has a lot of potential, but still has a lot to learn and improve on. I would think he'll fight at least once more this year but not sure when.

Kent (St Catharines)

Dan, I know you talked in last weeks chat about Roy Jones Jr's performance against Lacy. I have always been a big fan of Roy and it was nice to see him look good. However, was it just me or was his constant talking to people at ringside disrepectful to Lacy and extremely annoying as a viewer?

Dan Rafael
  (12:38 PM)

That's Roy. It's certainly not the first time he has showboated like that and likely won't be the last.

Brent (Cleveland)

Will the Love Child fight this year?

Dan Rafael
  (12:39 PM)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child. At the moment, there is nothing lined up for him, but I would hope he will fight again before the end of the year, perhaps in his home country of Colombia or on Telemundo, whose monthly cards are promoted by his co-promoter, Tuto Zabala Jr.

Pribs (Bethlehem, PA)

Is Adamek - Golota official?

Dan Rafael
  (12:41 PM)

They had a press conference in Poland this week to announce the fight. HOWEVER, Kathy Duva of Main Events, which promotes Adamek and is partners with a Polish promoter, told me in an email this week that if HBO comes through on Adamek-Hopkins soon (and it's getting close to a drop dead point) they will cancel the Golota fight. So until HBO says 100 percent no on the Hopkins fight (or, rather, the money the promoters are seeking), the Adamek-Golota fight is far from a 100 percent done deal.

Besim (Staten Island, New York)

From Wikipedia: "Julio has been given the nickname "Love Child" by ESPN Writer Dan Rafael. He will commonly wear a LC on his trunks because of this nickname.". How did this come about?

Dan Rafael
  (12:43 PM)

Ahhhhhhhhh, the Love Child. It started back in an early chat a few years ago (you'd have to look at the old transcripts). I was exuberant about his exciting style and had him as a top prospect and off handidly joked that he was my love child. It sort of stuck.

Slick (Philly)

Dan, I would say in his prime Roy Jones was better than a prime B-Hop but an argument can be made over who's had the better career. Who would you take??

Dan Rafael
  (12:45 PM)

They are both great fighters and both accomplished a lot. They both beat a lot of top fighters and you can nitpick things in both of their careers. I don't think there is any doubt that Roy was more physically gifted. He also had the monster amateur background while Hopkins came up the hard way. To me, they are both great for different reasons.

Brooklyn (New York)

Dan, is Mayweather still the pound for pound king? or does he have to win a fight against lets said Pacquiao or Cotto?

Dan Rafael
  (12:46 PM)

Mayweather can say what he wants but he is not the p4p king. Mayweather retired and gave up the mantle. Pacquiao seized it. It is up to Mayweather to seize it back or for Pacquiao to lose it.

Alex (Clev, OH)

Dan-o, What did you think about Floyd on RAW, I enjoyed it..

Dan Rafael
  (12:47 PM)

I thought Floyd was pretty disappointing compared to some other guest hosts they've had on Raw. I watched it on my DVR last night after I got home from my trip. I figured he would have no contact because his fight is so close, but he was barely in the episode and it was pretty weak. But it was certainly a good promotional vehicle for his PPV.

Pete (NYC)

Dan, are the guys facing Yuriorkis and JuanMa on 10/10 stiffs or do they have a chance of lasting a few rounds? Their records are not encouraging.

Dan Rafael
  (12:48 PM)

Gamboa's opponent, Whyber Garcia, I think gets stopped pretty early. Lopez's opponent, Rogers Mtagwa, is a rugged, strong guy who could hang around for awhile and make it fun while it lasts.

Steve (Sac,Ca)

Dano, when do you expect they will officialy annouince the venue for Kessler v Ward?

Dan Rafael
  (12:49 PM)

I wouldn't expect that until after Sept. 12, when they both have tuneup fights.

Malik (Philly)

What's the problem of a 40/60 split for the winner between B-Hop and JJR? That's seems fair and it makes for a more interesting fight agree?

Dan Rafael
  (12:50 PM)

I think that is a great way to handle it. 40 percent to each and the winner gets the other 20 percent. It makes it a true prize fight. I have advocated that system to make fights that have been tough to negotiate splits on.

Benvenuto (Miami)

I think Mtagwa / Lopez could be a war.......I think the fight is hiding under the radar for some reason......don't get me wrong, Lopez wins, but Mtagwa is going to keep coming.

Dave (NJ)

Why would HBO do a fight one day after Christmas? That is very rare, especially since the fighters would have to weigh in on Dec 25.

Dan Rafael
  (12:52 PM)

I agree, which is why I said it was merely something being discussed. It would be stupid. Poor TV ratings for sure, especially when it's an expensive fight. Very little media coverage. Probably not a great gate, especially since Mosley has never been a big draw on his own even on a good date and Berto and Clottey (whomever Mosley faces) bring nothing to the gate in the first place. Who knows?

Sean ((SF))

Unfortunately; your boys KISS have a concert scheduled at the Oakland Arena the same night as Kessler/Ward, so it won't be there like I hoped.

Dan Rafael
  (12:53 PM)

If that's the case, concerts are moved all the time.

Linus (Peanut Land)

How the h#ll did Pudwill qualify as an opponent for Ward?

Dan Rafael
  (12:53 PM)

Because has basically no chance to win.

Eric (North Hollywood, CA)

Que pasa Dan? Loved Paulie's line when he said that Caiz was Golden Boy's Gopher. Me and my boys couldn't stop laughing at that.

Dan Rafael
  (12:54 PM)

It was a good line and turned out to be right. He said that exact thing to me a week before the fight.

Chris (PA)

when i heard the scores being read for Paulie-Diaz, i thought for sure Paulie had won easy. Paulie must have thought that too after he heard 118-110. No way anyone else outside of Diaz's mother thought he won the fight by that wide of a margin.

Scott (Bloomington MN)

Judge Dan, I need your input on a disagreement I have with my co-workers, more impressive knockout of Vargas, Trinidad or De La Hoya?

Dan Rafael
  (12:57 PM)

Both impressive, but gotta give the nod to Tito, who totally destroyed a prime Vargas (with the help of a brutal low blow). Oscar's KO was nice also, but he got a Vargas who was not what he was when he faced Tito.

Baby Bulls Mother (Texas)

I had Paulie winning actually......like everyone else.

BJ (LA)

Is Nascimento a step up for Vanes?

Dan Rafael
  (12:57 PM)

Yes, he is a reasonable step up.

Ian (Pembroke Pines, FL)

Even Diaz's mother wasn't sure Diaz won the fight!

Dan Rafael
  (12:58 PM)

Exactly, which is why she was basically in tears before the scores were read.

Chuck (Clovis, CA)

Any chance of a Marquez vs Pacquiao III?

Dan Rafael
  (12:58 PM)

Depends on what happens in their upcoming fights but I think that fight will be possible in the future.

Mike (New York)

Is Floyd Mayweather SR helping his son out in training?

Dan Rafael
  (12:59 PM)

Yes, Senior has been in his camp, although Roger remains the head trainer.

Jamesa (Ottawa)

Dan, please please tell me that you don't support Adamek v. Golota. WTH. Adamek needs to fight Bhop or cunningham!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dan Rafael
  (1:00 PM)

I hate the fight but I get it. Adamek wants to make money. He can make a good payday against Golota without risking his title because in Poland, it's a big fight.

Scott (Bloomington MN)

Hey Dan, I thought the HBO dedication to Arguello, Gatti, and Forest was fantastic, you thoughts?

Dan Rafael
  (1:01 PM)

It was terrific. Very well done, very respectful. Brough a tear to my eye for sure.

Q (CT)

Hey Dan what do you think of Judah calling out Diaz and Berto on twitter, as well as Paulie saying(via Berto's twitter) he's working on a rematch with Diaz?

Dan Rafael
  (1:02 PM)

Judah wants to make money, so he calls guys out. He better first worry about his upcoming fight.

Mike (Portland, Or.)

Is there any particular reason you don't think Williams will fight at WW again? Do you think it's too far for him to cut now, or is it more about him not being able to draw quality opponents at that weight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:03 PM)

When push comes to shove, I don't think he'll make the weight and none of the big guys at 147 want to fight him anyway. He has plenty of options at 154 and 160, especially if he fights Pavlik and wins.

Marc (Malden, MA)

With Wlad out until next year, will the IBF and WBO get all greedy and disgusting and create an interim title?

Dan Rafael
  (1:04 PM)

Don't give them any ideas.

Nel Velasco (Odessa Tx)

is the Mayweather 24/7 this saturday or sunday

Dan Rafael
  (1:04 PM)

I premiers Saturday night but there will also be replays on Sunday (and all week).

Berndawg (CHI)

Insane if I had Diaz winning 7-5?

Dan Rafael
  (1:05 PM)

Not insane. I don't agree but at least reasonable as opposed to 118-110 or even 116-112.

Koolkc107 (Florida)

Do you think Paulie will be "blackballed" by HBO or other boxing kingpins because of his comments after the fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:06 PM)

No I don't, but if he is, HBO will hear about it I am sure.

Eddie (FL)

What about Adamek-Hopkins??

Dan Rafael
  (1:07 PM)

Still an option, as I have written. But not if HBO doesn't get its budget situation for 2010 ironed out sooner than later.

Rick (Marina)

Willl you be in LA for the Arreola-Klitscho fight?

Marc (Malden, MA)

For Mayweather/Marquez, I'm guessing the PPV cost is $45-$50. With the movie theater cost being $15, they don't have any worries about losing PPV buys?

Dan Rafael
  (1:09 PM)

Not at all. The fight will only be available in about 170 theaters with each theater having about 250 seats. That's not all that much overall.

Ian (Pembroke Pines, FL)

Zab Judah vs Paulie in an all-action hometown fight at MSG.

Dan Rafael
  (1:10 PM)

I've actually liked the idea of that fight for several years.

R! (Yay Area)

Do we get Azteca America fights tomorrow night? Looks like it will be decent

Dan Rafael
  (1:10 PM)

Yes, the Top Rank show will be on Azteca America.

Kevin (Boston)

Daisuke Naito vs. Koki Kameda in Japan is a HUGE fight from what I understand. I read somewhere that Koki once had 40 million views for one of his fights. Assuming this number is true, and the history between the Kameda?s and Naito, do you think this fight could do 50 million in Japan?

Dan Rafael
  (1:10 PM)

It is a massive fight in Japan. MASSIVE.

David (Cape Canaveral, Fl.)

Dano, isn't it true the reason PBF-JMM is in theatres is cause it isn't selling on home PPV? Hows the tix at the fight venue selling?

Dan Rafael
  (1:12 PM)

No, it is not true. The reason it is in theaters is to make it available as widely as possible and to give consumers another options. Also, Golden Boy will reap massive advertising impressions for the fight because every theater that shows it will run ads for it on all the screens in their multiplexes. So even though the fight will only show on one screen at a theater, it will be advertised on every screen at a 12-plex, for example. It's tremendous exposure.

Horn (Vegas)

When a fighter wins a questionable decision like Diaz, have you ever seen a fighter ADMIT that he was given a gift?

Dan Rafael
  (1:14 PM)

Not that I can think of.

Horn (Vegas)

What did you think of De La Hoya's prediction of a Marquez victory?

Dan Rafael
  (1:14 PM)

Nothing. I am not surprised. Oscar has been Marquez's guy thoughout the promotion and Richard Schaefer has been Mayweather's. It's been by design.

Julio (Seoul)

Dan, Can someone please call out Floyd Mayweather on his assertion that he is the face of boxing. He is not. Can a reporter or anyone please explain to him that the only reason he had those two huge fights was because he fought against DLH and RH, two guys with larger followings than him.

Dan Rafael
  (1:15 PM)

He has been called out on that many, many times. It does not register. He disagrees, which is certainly Floyd's right.

jonathan (new orleans)

is ricardo mayorga ever going to fight again???

Dan Rafael
  (1:15 PM)

I have no idea. I would imagine at some point he'll need the money and will wind up fighting again.

anthony (fayetteville )

i was reading the article about hopkins and jones and had a crazy idea why doesnt golden boy promotions just put together a ppv card of delahoya vs trinidad and hopkins vs jones and call it legendary nights i believe if u put these 4 names on a card together it would sell

Dan Rafael
  (1:17 PM)

Nice fantasy. But not even remotely possible based on the money the fighters would want. Simply not viable for a million reasons.

Carl (Newcastle,uk)

hey dan, I cracked up reading the back and forth between Bhop and RJJ in your blog, egomaniacs. Not that I would particulary want to see it but wouldn't Bhop make more money in an easier fight fighting jones than he would Adamek, Johnson or Dawson? If so, why do you think he is so resistant to the idea?

Dan Rafael
  (1:19 PM)

I am not sure who is resistant or not, but Hopkins is just looking for a big fight right now. A Jones-Hopkins fight would have to go on PPV and I am not sure how anxious HBO PPV is to support that fight at this point. It's just a hard deal to make.

Victor (Downey, Ca)

Hey Dan... I'm a big fan...Would you rather see Mosley vs Berto or Mosley vs Clottey?... Why?...

Dan Rafael
  (1:20 PM)

I would be fine with either fight, but if I had to pick, I would take the Berto fight. Probably better action in the ring, a statement fight for Berto and a way for Mosley gain another quality victory and even pick up a belt in the process.

Romeo (DC)

How disappointed are you in Pavlik's middleweight reign?

Dan Rafael
  (1:22 PM)

I wouldn't be honest if I didn't say it has been a big disappointment. Two defenses against weak opponents is disappointing. The rematch with Taylor he had no choice but to do it over the weight because of Taylor's contract. The biggest problem has really been a lack of top opponents once you got past Abraham, who is now out of the division. So that is what made the Hopkins fight happen, which proved to be a terrible mistake.

Aaron (Hartford)

Any word on who/when Sergio Mora is fighting next ?

Dan Rafael
  (1:22 PM)

Most likely his promoter, Jeff Wald from the Contender.

Romeo (DC)

Can a fighter have his ring magazine title stripped for inactivity or reluctance to fight top quality opponents?

Dan Rafael
  (1:22 PM)

No. The rules are very, very explicit on how you lose that belt.

David (Old Bridge, NJ)

Is the Mayweather Marquez theater broadcast be the HBO PPV show, just on the big screen ?

Dan Rafael
  (1:23 PM)

From what I understand the theater broadcast will be the HBO PPV in HD on a big screen.

Dan Rafael
  (1:24 PM)

I think it would be a terrific fight.

Dan Rafael
  (1:25 PM)

I think decent. All depends on if Valero-Soto happens. If it doesn't I could see Soto staying at 130 for that fight if HBO had a date for it.

Paul B (NY, NY)

DTM- I hope you had an enjoyable vacation. Any chance Valuev-Haye will have a TV outlet in the US?

Dan Rafael
  (1:25 PM)

Thanks. It was fun. Valuev-Haye has no US TV at the moment, but I would not be surprised to see it land as a small PPV live from Europe on the afternoon of the fight.

Tom (new zealand)

What's going on with thw status of Vivian Harris?

Dan Rafael
  (1:26 PM)

He says he has seen his doctor and been cleared to resume his training and boxing.

Steve (NYC)

Hey D$, what islands did you hit on your cruise? run into any fight fans on the open seas?

Dan Rafael
  (1:27 PM)

Bahamas. I didn't talk any boxing.

Josh A. (Calgary, Alberta)

What are your thoughts on Erislandy Lara?

Dan Rafael
  (1:28 PM)

Excellent prospect. He may be the best pro prospect of the recent wave of Cuban defectors.

Ronak (NY)

Hey Dan, how excited are you for mayweather-marquez 24/7?

Dan Rafael
  (1:29 PM)

I enjoy the show and am looking forward to it.

Jonathan (Brooklyn, NY)

Dan, good FNF card tonight. I guess we're going to learn something about Tavoris Cloud. What do you think it will be?

Dan Rafael
  (1:31 PM)

This is his big opportunity. He's in with Woods, an experienced veteran former titleholder. Granted, Woods is not what he was at his best, but he's probably got a little more left than Julio Gonzalez did when Cloud beat him. I don't think it's enough for Cloud to win to make his name. I think it's how he wins that will get people excited or make people not really care.

Chris (Boston)

Dan, why aren't you showing any love for your own network and covering the great FNF card tonight? We know you love the venue.

Dan Rafael
  (1:31 PM)

I was on vacation.

Ron (Bethel, ct)

I'm on the fence about purchasing tickets to Junma's Oct 10th card in NYC. Can you give me your input on whether this is more of a showcase card or are lopez's and Gamboa's opponents gonna put up a good fight? I have to admit the solis johnson hevyweight fight has the potential to be a good one!!! thanks for your help

Dan Rafael
  (1:33 PM)

I think overall, it will be a very fun card to attend. The Theater at MSG is a great venue with good views from everywhere. The card should be entertaining. I've given my thoughts on the two top fights earlier in the chat, but I also am very interested in the heavyweight fight and I think Vanes is in a decent step-up fight. Plus Korobov and Duddy are off TV. The tickets are priced well. I think it's worth it for sure.

Damon (San Diego, CA)

Do you think Flyod embraces the role of "man you love to hate" or he just is who he is? As much as a disagree with him, I can't deny he is entertaining to listen to.

Dan Rafael
  (1:33 PM)

Floyd knows how to play the game and he does it very, very well.

Richard (Memphis)

Who do you think got the better end of the trade between Prize Fight and Dibella of Adam Richards and Chazz Witherspoon?

Dan Rafael
  (1:35 PM)

Witherspoon is the better skilled fighter, the Swamp Donkey is a MUCH more exciting fighter to watch. Since I don't think either is going to the championship level, I'd rather have a guy who is less of a pain in the ass and that is the Donkey, no pun intended.

Bob (Utah)

Dan, do you like to watch movies about Gladiators?

Dan Rafael
  (1:36 PM)

Bob, have you ever been in a Turkish prison?

Scott (Bloomington)

Hey Dan, if HBO came to you for suggestions on the next round of Legendary Nights, which fights would you suggest?

Dan Rafael
  (1:38 PM)

There are several that deserve that treatment since the last batch. Certainly the Barrera-Morales and Gatti-Ward trilogies. Hopkins-Trinidad for certain. I'd love to see one on Lewis-Klitschko, which came together in a strange way. Remember, these shows are about the fight but also stuff around the fight. There are lots of good candidates if HBO wanted to do another 12 shows.

Banishment (Dan's Basement)

We'd like to welcome Bob from Utah.

Dan Rafael
  (1:39 PM)

Actually, Bob's comment was somewhat brilliant as it is a quote from one of the greatest comedy movies of all time, as was my answer.

Josh (Nashville)

DTM, Kudos the your friends @ ESPN putting on this exciting card tonight. What are the chances someone gets put to sleep in the FNF Season Finale?

Dan Rafael
  (1:40 PM)

See the kind of card you can make if you put some more money up? That's what ESPN did and we have a terrific show tonight. I do think at least one fight ends in a KO. I wouldn't be surprised if both did.

Koolkc107 (Florida)

Legendary Nights? How 'bout Whitaker vs. Chavez?

Dan Rafael
  (1:41 PM)

Ummmm, that was a Showtime fight.

Jeremy (Boston)

Why is Duddy's fight off TV from MSG? I know he's coming off a loss but he's still popular and he's been in some really solid action fights.

Dan Rafael
  (1:42 PM)

Top Rank doesn't promote him and has a full card of its own guy, but Duddy will help sell tickets at the venue, shake off the loss and perhaps set himself up for the fight Arum wants to do eventually, which is Duddy against Chavez Jr.

Michael (NJ)

Hi Dan concerning the strawweight division. Do you think the young champ Roman Gonzalez will ever have some exposure in the US he has a great fanbase in Japan and his brawler style is anything but pleasing. Thanks Dan.

Dan Rafael
  (1:44 PM)

I'd be somewhat surprised if we ever see Gonzalez on US TV. There is simply no market here for strawweights.

mike (NJ)

well you gonna tell us what movie its from???

Dan Rafael
  (1:45 PM)

Figure it out.

Andy (Fairfax, VA)

I just caught up on chat, how do you think Bailey KO'ing Urango would be a mild upset? Urango has never been down, has an incredible chin it seems as well.

Dan Rafael
  (1:46 PM)

Bailey has the power to KO ANYONE if he lands his right hand and Urango gets hit. It's only my pick. Don't take it so seriously.

lance (poland)

Do you consider Pawel Wolak a prospect?

Dan Rafael
  (1:46 PM)

No.

Scott (Bloomington)

Hey Dan, any idea if HBO has plans on a Countdown show to Dawson vs Johnson 2?

Dan Rafael
  (1:46 PM)

They're not.

Dan ((LA))

Surely, Mike (NJ) can't be serious?

Dan Rafael
  (1:47 PM)

Don't call me Shirley.

Vinnie (Charleston, SC)

Once Katsidis KO's Escobedo, do you think he'll get a shot at the title

Dan Rafael
  (1:48 PM)

Whomever wins that fight will have the WBO's interim belt, so yeah.

Paul B (NY, NY)

Airplane?

Dan Rafael
  (1:48 PM)

Correct.

Richard (Kendall park, NJ)

The red zone is for loading and unloading of passengers only. There is no parking in the white zone....

Dan Rafael
  (1:48 PM)

What's the fastest land animal?

jonny (portlan)

dan, have you heard when they will announce what 170 theaters will be showing the fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:49 PM)

I do not know the specific locations of which theaters will show the bout.

Koolkc107 (Florida)

Who wins if Timothy Bradley fights Lamont Peterson? My money'd be on Lamont.

Dan Rafael
  (1:49 PM)

It's a very solid matchup. I think it's a toss up.

Tim (Lincoln)

Looks like I picked the wrong chat to quit sniffing glue.

Ronnie (CA)

Give me a James Toney update

Dan Rafael
  (1:54 PM)

James will be back in action on Sept. 12 against Matt Greer off TV on the Andre Ward ShoBox undercard.

Steve (Hartford)

Dan can you please answer this, intereted if you knew the gate and the ppv buys for the Jones/Lacy fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:56 PM)

They have no put out the PPV numbers and I doubt they will since it will be pretty low. They'd be thrilled with 50,000.

Michael (Long Beach, CA)

Happy Friday, Dan. Again, Leonard Ellerbe is acting as if the police, media and the entire world is inaccurate regarding Floyd and the skating rink incident. I'm not saying Floyd did anything, but hasn't his car been placed at the scene?

Dan Rafael
  (1:56 PM)

From what I have read and heard, it was Floyd's car involved. That does not mean that Floyd himself was involved.

Sean (NJ)

Dan, how about your new favorite belt, the Diamond belt, being up for grabs in the Floyd fight? I'm sure you loved to read that

Dan Rafael
  (1:58 PM)

I was moderately disgusted when I got the press release announcing that.

Brandon (Arlington, VA)

Super Dan, your blog with the back and forth between Roy and Bernard on the radio is one of my favorite entries in a while. I would LOVE to see a prize fight between the two of them. I'm sure it's all posturing, but Roy came across much better in that "interview."

Dan Rafael
  (1:58 PM)

A lot of people would like to see it already. If they are serious about making it, they just need to do it and get it on. A decade of posturing is pathetic.

Bert (Minneapolis)

Corrupt judges, greedy sanctioning organizations, Floyd hogging ESPN chats this week, man I want to go on a cruise too.

Huff (DeKalb, IL)

I read that the diamond belt wasn't drawing a sanction fee for the Manny-Cotto fight. If they don't ask for a fee are you ok with the belt?

Dan Rafael
  (1:59 PM)

As the drug dealer once said, the first one is always free.

Greg P (Staten Island,NY)

Dan, do you get the feeling that most people are forgetting how much power Bailey has?

Dan Rafael
  (2:00 PM)

I don't know about that since the knockout of Figueroa has been replayed over and over and over.

Sam (Chicago, IL)

Given the lack of coordination for regulating how each state's commission behaves, do you think HBO and Showtime have the responsibility to police them.... in this case, should HBO have insisted on fair refs and judges as a precondition of buying the fight?

Dan Rafael
  (2:01 PM)

You can get on HBO's case about a lot of things. Same with Showtime. Dictating the judges or having any involvement in their selection whatsoever is not their domain in any way, shape or form.

Duff (Abington, MA)

List of theaters that will show the Mayweather-Marquez fight:http://www.ncm.com/FathomContent/PDF/Participating Theatres_MVM_0829009.pdf

Dan Rafael
  (2:03 PM)

There you go Freaks. Big props to Duff the Freak for that list.

Paul B (NY, NY)

Your drug analogy was spot freaking on! This new belt is yet a new low.

Dominic (San Francisco)

Tell your old man to drag Walton and Lanier up and down the court for 48 minutes.

piojo (lauderdale)

There's no reason to become alarmed, and we hope you'll enjoy the rest of your flight. By the way, is there anyone on board who knows how to fly a plane?

Dan Rafael
  (2:04 PM)

As much as I hate flying, that movie is legendary.

Chris Metler (Toronto)

How sick would the proposed Hopkins-Toney catchweight fight of 2003 have been? Who would you have favored, both then and now?

Dan Rafael
  (2:05 PM)

I remember writing about that proposed fight for USA TODAY back then. I was intrigued by it. I always thought that as great as Hopkins was/is, Toney would have been too big and slick for him. Then and now.

Dan Rafael
  (2:07 PM)

I suppose it's possible, but I have no inside knowledge of what is in the show.

Joel (Eastchester, NY)

Dan, is Karass vs. Gomez almost finalized for Nov 14th?

Dan Rafael
  (2:07 PM)

Not yet since they both fight this weekend.

bob (nj)

whats the chance of hopkins-jones actually happening?

Dan Rafael
  (2:08 PM)

I don't think it will ever happen.

Andy (Ventura)

Dan, any word on Valero getting a license in Nevada?

Dan Rafael
  (2:10 PM)

Nothing yet. Top Rank and Valero are supposed to get the ball rolling with the paperwork. It will be a few weeks at least because the rule change is still not officially on the Nevada books until it goes through some formalities.

Kyle (Indianapolis)

Dan,I have my ABC referring and judges certification, and Duane Ford and Jay Nady (name dropper) both said that a judge a referree should never work more than 1 fight on a card, and I noticed that Van Hoy and Cole both worked the first fight on the card and the last fight. Should Paulie be bringing that up to the texas state althletic commission?

Dan Rafael
  (2:12 PM)

I noticed that also and was surprised to see that happen. I am not sure why it did but maybe Van Hoy was sleepy from his first assignment. I also tend to agree that with major cards, a main event judge should not work other fights on the card.

Rod the Bod (NYC)

Does the HOF induct trainers? If so, Roach gets in for sure right?

Dan Rafael
  (2:13 PM)

Yes, trainers are in the HOF. I would think eventually Freddie will certainly be inducted as a trainer.

Brian (DC)

The first Jones-Hopkins fight was a snoozer, I doubt the second would be any better. No big deal if it never comes off.

Dan Rafael
  (2:14 PM)

I think a rematch would be better than the first fight because it couldn't be worse.

Richard (Kendall park, NJ)

We have clearance, Clarence. Roger, Roger. What's our vector, Victor?

TL (Hopedale, MA)

Danny Boy - In your opinion, what was RJJ best weight class?

Dan Rafael
  (2:15 PM)

168. But he didn't stay there long enough to carve out a serious legacy in the division. He did beat James Toney at 168 but he didn't stay there very long.

Gordon (DC)

Is it possible that if all the Freaks pooled their money, showed up at a purse bid and won, we can stage the fight at any desired location?

Dan Rafael
  (2:17 PM)

If you a registered promoter with the organization calling for the purse bid and you win, you can put the fight wherever you please. I've often joked that if I was a zillionaire, I'd register and bid on fights for the hell of it and have them in my backyard and invite some folks over.

Serg (UK)

Dan, do you think a 50-50 split is fair between Roy and Bhop at this point?

Dan Rafael
  (2:18 PM)

I would say this -- make it 45-45 or something and give the rest to the winner. But 50-50 would be fair also. Bernard is deemed by most everyone to have more left and be closer to the top than Roy at this point, but Roy also does own a clean win against him. So why not 50-50?

Dan ((LA))

Why does Golden Boy still list Pacquiao as being one of their fighters? (http://www.goldenboypromotions.com/fighters/mpacquiao.php) The website has clearly been updated since the suitcase incident. Isn't Manny all Top Rank or does Golden Boy have a minority share or something?

Dan Rafael
  (2:18 PM)

Golden Boy retains a small % in Manny's promotional contract as a result of the settlement with Top Rank.

Jeezy (VA)

More delusional: BHop offering Adamek $500k, or BHop demanding a 60-40 split with RJJ?

Dan Rafael
  (2:20 PM)

They're both a way to say that you either do not want the fight or you think the other guy is a chump.

Sean (Richmond, VA)

Buy/Sell The Ghost vs. Linares next year?

Dan Rafael
  (2:22 PM)

Unless something radically changes with Linares' promotional situation, sell.

carlos (houston, tx)

what happen to the notebook today?

Dan Rafael
  (2:22 PM)

I have been on vacation. Is that OK with you?

Gerardo (AZ)

Hey Dan, do you have any votes for awards, HOF, etc. for any sport other than boxing?

Dan Rafael
  (2:24 PM)

I have a vote for the Hall of Fame as well as for the Boxing Writers Association of America annual awards. But not other sports.

Gerardo (AZ)

"I have been on vacation. Is that OK with you?"LOL. You're an a-hole sometimes, albeit a funny one.

Dan Rafael
  (2:24 PM)

I try.

Raul (Los Angeles, CA )

Dan, do you give Arreola a legit chance against Vitali?

Dan Rafael
  (2:25 PM)

Not really.

C.M. (Toronto)

Is Toney-Jones still the biggest fight in the super middleweight division's history? Or did Calzaghe-Kessler take its place?

Dan Rafael
  (2:27 PM)

Calzaghe-Kessler drew more people but in terms of history, I think Jones-Toney was bigger because you have two Hall of Famers against each other in their prime. But they were both very significant. I'd rate then 1-2.

Ken (Vegas)

Is there no way for Arum to change his mind about Foreman-Santos?

Dan Rafael
  (2:28 PM)

Bob can always change his mind.

Andy (Ventura)

In Floyd Mayweather's commercial with Bill Curtis, Curtis says Floyd "has the fastest hands boxing has ever seen". I trust you more than I do Bill Curtis when it comes to boxing, so who has the fastest hands you have ever seen.

Dan Rafael
  (2:29 PM)

Mayweather has incredible hand speed but the fastest hands I have ever seen belong to prime Roy Jones.

Eddie (FL)

Danny Jacobs needs to work on his fundamentals

Dan Rafael
  (2:29 PM)

I agree he has some things to work on. He is 22, he is barely two years into his pro career. He is coming along nicely.

Scott (Los Angeles)

Don't you think that if Kessler is successful in the Showtime tournament he and Joe C. will both be sure hall of famers?

Dan Rafael
  (2:30 PM)

If Kessler comes through the tournament, especially if he runs the table, I think you can make that case. Calzaghe is already an automatic HOFer.

bboyks (colorado)

Dan. This might be a dumb question or questions, but here it is. When a fighter gets paid whos' name or company is written on the check? And is a boxer paid in full with one check?

Dan Rafael
  (2:33 PM)

It all depends. Sometimes fighters are paid directly in their name (or the name of their own corporation). Sometimes the promoter of a fight pays the promoter of the other fighter, who in turn pays the fighter. Purses can sometimes be divided into payments if prior arrangements were made. And the check would be to the fighter minus whatever deductions are agreed to -- a sanction fee, a manager cut, a trainer cut, etc...

Taylor (SLC, UT)

Dan, I agree Danny J needs to work a bit on the fundimentals, but man, I love that he's not afraid to battle! I hope HBO keeps tabs on him.

Dan Rafael
  (2:34 PM)

You can be assured you will see more of Jacobs on HBO.

Nick (Sacramento CA)

By the way Dan, who's your pick to win the Super Middleweight Tournament?

Dan Rafael
  (2:35 PM)

I've thought Kessler was the favorite from the outset. Nothing has changed yet. We'll see what happens as the tourney moves along.

chrisdiggidy (oklahoma city)

Were you a bigger fan of legendary nights or 24/7? Both are incredible

Dan Rafael
  (2:36 PM)

Like you, I like both of them. If I had to pick, I love Legendary Nights more.

Bobo (FLA)

If the scores had all been 115-113 for Diaz, would it still be a controversial decision?

Dan Rafael
  (2:36 PM)

Much less so.

Dan Rafael
  (2:38 PM)

Garcia is a good prospect with a good amateur background. He's been active but I have to be honest. I have seen most of his fights I just don't get the sense he is improving as much as I would like to see him improve. But he's still young and there is time.

Derek (Brooklyn)

When is Danny Jacobs gonna fight in NYC? Theyre doing him a disservice by not building up his local fan base.

Dan Rafael
  (2:38 PM)

I totally agree and I have made that point in a blog not too long ago.

bill (pgh)

Does GBP have a set amount of dates each year with HBO, unlike other promoters?

Dan Rafael
  (2:39 PM)

Yes, HBO has an output deal with Golden Boy that guarantees it a certain amount of dates. It was ill advised and totally unecessary. Let promoters come with the best fights and then cherry pick the best ones rather than be forced to give any promoter a date without knowing ahead of time the matchups.

Pete (NYC)

Is Khan-Salita going to be in the UK? Will that happen before the end of the year?

Dan Rafael
  (2:41 PM)

I am told the fight is being negotiated. I would imagine it would be in the UK, where Khan is a draw. It should happen before the end of the year.

Joe (Stamford, CT)

Any thought of putting Mosley-Clottey on the Pac-Cotto undercard? It would allow Top Rank to one up Golden Boy, and they could probably get away with charging $59.95 for the PPV with that fight on the card

Dan Rafael
  (2:43 PM)

Do you not understand basic economics?

bill (pgh)

so any chance of seeing Naito-Kameda on a US tv screen?

Dan Rafael
  (2:44 PM)

Zero, unless it's a DVD or tape you play on your own TV after the fact.

Derek (Brooklyn)

I believe Joe from Stamford is actually a Professor at the Winky Wright School of Boxing Business

Romeo (DC)

Given Rigondeaux's older age and lengthy amateur career, how many pro fights do you predict until he fights serious competition on HBO or Showtime?

Dan Rafael
  (2:45 PM)

Inside 10 fights.

Jason (Decatur, GA)

What do you think about the limited use of replay in NV?

Dan Rafael
  (2:45 PM)

I fully support it. It's about time.

Dan Rafael
  (2:47 PM)

OK, Freaks, thanks for the chat. Hope you all enjoy an excellent show tonight on Friday Night Fights and have a great weekend. Talk to you next week. Peace.
