Chat with Pat Yasinskas

Ollie The Magic Bum (Venice Beach,CA)

After throwing for 5,000-yards and 34 touchdowns, what can Drew Brees possibly do as an encore?

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:31 PM)

Have a winning season. See that as being very possible. He just needs more help from his teammates. All right, we're kicking off the NFC South chat early because I may have to cut out around 1:30 (ET) to attend Raheem Morris' press conference.

td (charlotte)

Rumours have it that Stewart is trade bait for a DT. Please tell that is not true

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:32 PM)

I have not heard anything like that. I'd be totally surprised if there was anything to it.

Derrick Brooks (Tampa)

After last nights game Raheem just called and asked if I have any experience playing quarterback. What should I do

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:33 PM)

Loosen up your throwing arm.

Jon (Charlotte)

Can you name any DT possibilities for the Panthers as the Pre season is winding down

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:34 PM)

Hard to say because we don't know who's going to be cut elsewhere. But I'd watch the situations in Tennessee and Cleveland.

ac (orlando,fl)

With many teams looking for another qb do you think the bucs will trade mccown after his poor performance last night? What kind of compensation would they get for him anything better that a 5th round pick

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:36 PM)

I think they'd gladly entertain offers. But do you think last night really got any other team excited about McCown? I say a sixth or seven rounder would be the best they could get for him, but I don't think there will be a lot of takers. My guess is Bucs keep him as backup to Leftwich. If they trade McCown, they're one injury away from having to play Freeman way before they want to.

SensibleFan (Detroit, MI)

Best player you've seen in the preseason thus far?

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:36 PM)

Drew Brees.

ac (orlando,fl)

after stovalls performance last night do you see him or stroughter winning the battle for the 3rd wr spot?

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:37 PM)

Stroughter. Stovall's had big Augusts before and it's never translated into much in the regular season.

SensibleFan (Detroit, MI)

Who's the better leader: Leftwich or McCown?

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:38 PM)

Leftwich has way more experience and seems to have pretty good support in the locker room.

Tyler Parker (Shelbyville,TN)

Is there any chance that DeAngelo Williams can duplicate his shockingly productive 2008 season?

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:38 PM)

Sure, why not? He's got a very good o-line in front of him.

Phil (Saints Fan)

Pat, I believe last week you said you were working on an article about Robert Meachem being the breakout player in the NFC South. Have I missed it?

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:39 PM)

Yes, it ran yesterday. Check the blog. It should have popped in there at 1 p.m. ET on Thursday.

Megan (Louisiana)

Do you think the Saints have a chance of going into the playoffs?

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:39 PM)

Sure, just need to play a little defense.

Andrew (Atlanta)

How many WRs do you think Atlanta will keep on the roster? When do you think cuts will be made?

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:40 PM)

Five or six. Beleive Sept. 5 or 6 is day they have to cut down to 53.

jw (atl)

do you think falcons defense will hold up this year? So many new faces

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:41 PM)

New faces, yes. But they don't have the old legs they had last season. I view that as a positive.

Ryan (new orleans)

Saints defense has been better but pretty vanilla. Can we expect them to become even more aggressive once the full defensive scheme is used in the regular season?

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:42 PM)

Absolutely. They're not gonna show much of that stuff in the preseason. They'd be foolish if they did.

Pat (BoA Building)

With injuries left and right to the Carolina D are we one knee injury away from another 1-15 season?

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:43 PM)

No, it's not that bad yet. Yes, the growing injuries are a concern, but they're a long way from the George Seifert days.

Bill (Orlando)

Do you think Roy Miller will start this year for the Bucs if so how long will it be??? I understand as of now hes the 3rd DT

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:44 PM)

I'd start him on Day One. But I think they'll open the season with him as No. 3 and playing him a lot.

L.T. (Tampa)

Any word today as to if Rha met with coaches and staff this morning. Is the media there expecting him to name a starter today?

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:45 PM)

I'm at One Buc waiting. He's scheduled to talk at 1:30. Can only assume he's spent the morning meeting with assistants. I think there's a good chance he'll announce decision. But, given his recent history, he could delay it again.

ah (ypsilanti mi)

do u see either 2 rookie corners taking marshalls spot anytime this season

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:46 PM)

Richard Marshall? No, Panthers want him as starter. That's why they let Lucas go.

Taye B. (LA)

I keep reading Robert Meachem is running with the first team with Lance Moore still recovering from his injury. Do you think he will stay there and make a real contribution (consistantly) this season? Also, didnt you said you were working on an article featuring him? When should we be looking for it? Thanks!

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:47 PM)

Article on Meachem first went up yesterday. Check out NFC South blog. Just scroll down to about middle of day Thursday and you should find it.

Andrew (Myrtle Beach)

have you heard if J Stew and Beason will be able to play week 1 against the eagles?

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:48 PM)

Million dollar question right there. Fox is so coy with injuries that I don't know if we'll get a real strong indication on this until the opener gets closer.

Mitch (Jacksonville, FL)

Pat, why is it every single time you mention the Saints playoff chances, you question the defense but do not do the same with the Falcons? The Saints defense finished ahead of Atlanta's defense in total yards allowed (though barely) last year, and has made just as many upgrades if not more. Yet you speak of Atlanta's defense as being definitely good while the Saints defense is still a maybe.

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:49 PM)

Given what's happened with Saints last two seasons, I think I'm fair in taking a wait-and-see approach. I think Williams and new personnel will make a difference, but want to see it first.

Sharell (NCFalconFan)

Can you please let Raheem know to not schedule press conferences on Friday during our chat. Not hearing alot about our first round draft pick, Jerry. What have you heard?

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:50 PM)

Think it's a good thing that you're not hearing much about him. As a DT, that means he's probably doing his job. If he were messing up, you'd be hearing about it.

Tim (Atlanta, Ga)

Atlanta Falcon WR predictions: Roddy White, Michael Jenkins, Brian Finneran, Robert Ferguson, Eric Weems. IN that order. What do ya think Pat?

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:51 PM)

Maybe switch Finneran and Ferguson. But other than that, sounds about right.

Lloyd (Baton Rouge, LA)

Sorry if this is a little off topic but I was wondering if you ever read the comments about your blog and how do you take the criticism about your opinion if there is criticism?

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:52 PM)

Everybody's entitled to an opinion.

Drew (gastonia nc)

pat, theres been some talk from some of the local reporters that the panthers may be interested in trading for glen dorsey or corey williams. do u think somehing like this is possible?

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:53 PM)

I'm sure they would like to get someone like one of those guys. But what do they really have as ammunition to pull a trade like that?

Patrick (New Orleans, LA)

Pat, what kind of year do you expect from Jeremy Shockey? He's healthy this year (first time in a long time), and has a great attitude. Some media folks are doubting him but after seeing him in training camp, I expect something like 75

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:54 PM)

I also expect good things from him. But I think your numbers might be a bit optimistic. That's more than in his NY days. I'd say more like 60 catches, 700 yards and six or seven TDs.

SensibleFan (Detroit, MI)

Kellen Winslow has been nonexistent this preseason. What happened to the vaunted TE-centric Bucs Offense?

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:54 PM)

It's only preseason.

Taylor (South Carolina)

What do you think the chances of Captain Munnerlyn, the 7th round CB the Panthers drafted, of making the team?

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:55 PM)

Sounds like he's got the team made.

ah (ypsilantimi)

do you think kenneth moore is taking ryne robinson's spot?

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:56 PM)

From what I've heard, I think that's the case.

Tim (Atlanta, Ga)

Pat, I remember awhile back you saying you were working on an article about Brent Grimes. I haven't heard anything in a couple of weeks. Just out of curiosity, will you be releasing that article soon? Or did I miss it being posted on the blog?

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:57 PM)

Haven't gotten to the Grimes piece yet. Hope to get to it next week.

Lloyd (Baton Rouge, LA)

Do you think the Saints LBs are good enough to warrant not getting Derrick Brooks? I hear the Dunbar and Casillas are doing pretty well.

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:58 PM)

I liked Casillas a lot when I was at camp and I know the coaches like both guys you mention. I think they'll keep seeing how they're doing. If they think they still need help, maybe you see Brooks in Week 2. That way, his salary isn't guaranteed.

Jason (Land O Lakes)

It looked last night like the offensive line has already anoited Leftwich as starter. They were horrible when McCown was behind center.

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:59 PM)

Had the same thought. Hate to think an o-line would think like that, but it makes you wonder.

Jeff (Atlanta)

DJ Shockley or JP Wilson for 3rd string?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:00 PM)

Shockley.

juan (milwaukee)

How will Matt Ryan utilize his new weapon Tony Gonzalez when he used the tight ends the least out of any starting QB last season?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:00 PM)

Believe me, Mularkey's put in a lot more pages in the play book for passes to the TE.

Alex (Class)

Cadillac and Graham looked good and broke off some long runs last night. Thoughts on the running game and the 2-2-1 system?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:01 PM)

Running game should be good. I suspect Ward will be No. 1 with Graham and Cadillac rotating in frequently.

Pat (Tampa, Fl)

McCown, Clayton, Draft Pick for Brandon Marshall? It would certainly make Leftwich look a little better!

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:02 PM)

Would you want the headaches that would come with that? Just saying.

Pootie (Athens, GA)

Pat, thanks for doing this chat every Friday. I really enjoy reading it and I think you do great work. It's good to read some down to earth football talk when there is so much drama and sensationalism out there.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:02 PM)

Thank you.

aaron (tampa)

stop with these other questions and lets talk buc ball!!!! the caddy how goood did he look last night ? and whats this mean for his role this year?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:03 PM)

He looked very good and that's encouraging. But, once again, don't get too carried away. The guy's had two major knee injuries. If he can be close to what he was, great. But let's proceed cautiously on this.

johnny (greensboro,nc)

hey pat, how big do you see mike goodson's role with the panthers being?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:04 PM)

Hang loose on that. Predictions are coming in early September.

Steven (Hotlanta)

Pat, I am a HUGE Falcons fan but I've been impressed with the Saints defense (yuck it hurts to say that) this preseason. Should I be concerned about them challenging my Falcons, or are we clearly the best team in the division?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:05 PM)

I don't think anybody's clearly the best team in this division. Carolina, New Orleans and Atlanta all are in the mix.

lee (charlotte, nc)

i know its mostly due to injury, but what do you think of sherrod martin moving (back) to safety? what effect does that have on the nickel corner situation?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:07 PM)

I think it was a combination of need at safety because of the injuries and partly because Martin wasn't lighting it up at CB. I know they're real high on Munnerlyn and he could be the nickel.

Lloyd (Baton Rouge, LA)

I will assume that you think the Saints defense would be the reason the Saints aren't successful this year if they aren't. Injuries aside, what do you think might derail Atlanta, Carolina, and TB?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:08 PM)

You're asking for a potential weak spot on each of those teams? Atlanta -- the defense, as much as I think it'll be better, they do have five new starters. Carolina, you said injuries aside, so I'll say Delhomme remains a question. Tampa Bay -- I still have my doubts about the defense.

Jason (Biloxi, MS)

Pat, when healthy, do you think that Marques Colston is the second best WR in the NFC South after Steve Smith? I think a lot of people forgot about him last year because he was hurt. But the guy is very similar to Andre Johnson if you ask me.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:09 PM)

Yep. He was extremely impressive when I was at Saints camp.

Tim (Thomasville)

Any chance the Buccos can pull off what the Falcons did last year and shock the world with one of those clown QB's starting all year??

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:10 PM)

Last year's Falcons proved you never rule anything out.

Chris (Tampa)

Pat I havent seen much of Wilkerson this preseason should I be concerned??

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:10 PM)

Pretty sure Wilkerson had a sack last night. Also recall him making another play or being in on something in a positive way.

KEVIN (LAFAYETTE, LA)

DO YOU THINK THAT ANTHONY HARGROVE WILL PUSH EITHER CHARLES GRANT OR KENDRICK CLANCY FOR THEIR STARTING SPOTS? IF I AM NOT MISTAKING HE HAS BEEN PLAYING BOTH TACKLE AND END IN THE PRESEASON.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:11 PM)

He's been playing both. Think you'll see him at DE first because of the likely suspensions. Williams is real high on Hargrove. I could see him taking Grant's spot in the long haul.

Lloyd (Baton Rouge, LA)

You surprised by not saying the play of the QB for TB.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:13 PM)

Was just trying to go beyond the obvious. But, seriously, I think it doesn't matter that much who's playing QB for Tampa. Bucs are going to run the ball most of the time.

ah (ypsilantimi)

do you think dwayne jarret will have any production this yr? IF you do throw some projected stats at me plz.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:14 PM)

Don't get your hopes too high on that one.

Pat (Tampa, Fl)

So how wet did you get last night? I got drenched...

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:15 PM)

Thankfully, I was in the press box and it had stopped raining by time I got out of there. Parking lot was a mud bath.

Miles (Lakeland, FL)

What's going to happen to Josh Johnson? It wouldn't seem like they're trying real hard to trade him since he didn't get to throw last week and didn't even get on the field last night.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:15 PM)

Think there's a growing chance Johnson stays with the team even if it means carrying four QBs.

dennis (nola)

Pat,even though it is preseason,if bell continues to look like the bell from his first season with denver could he pass up thomas on the dept chart?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:17 PM)

A week ago, I would have said no way. But Bell seems to be gaining ground. Looked awesome last week.

Derrick (Kenner, LA)

Pat, what type of season do you expect from Reggie Bush? Is it crazy for me to think that he can be a 1000 yard rusher? Based on the reports from Jeff Duncan and Mike Triplett, amongst several others, he has finally started looking the part of a guy who could produce yards on the ground and not just in the air.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:18 PM)

Think 1,000 on the ground might be optimistic. But I agree with Dunk and Trip that Reggie will be more productive -- if he stays healthy.

Jason (Tampa)

Four QBs???? These guys aren't that good. Like you said, all they need to know is how to hand the ball off.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:20 PM)

Don't rule out four QBs.

Jeff (South Florida)

As bad as leftwitch and mc cown played last night it is clear they are at best back ups, why not start freeman?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:21 PM)

Did you see Freeman when he played last night? They don't want to play him until at least midseason.

CHRIS BLAIR (JACKSON,MS)

Pat, have you heard any thing else on derrick brooks

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:23 PM)

No, very quiet. If there's going to be anything with the Saints, I think it will come in Week 2. Couple of minutes more here before I have to go to press conference with Raheem Morris.

Sam (Apex)

How is Corey Irvin coming along we drafted him in the third round and despite our problem at DT he doesnt seem to even be in the picture.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:24 PM)

What I've been told by Panthers, they like Irvin a lot, but they view him as a project. A year or two before he's really a factor.

ATLJBO (Atlanta )

What are your thoughts on Lawrence Sidbury ?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:25 PM)

Lots of upside. If Anderson flops again, think you'll see Davis start and Sidbury used as situational pass rusher.

Jason (Cubicle of Joy)

If Matt Ryan encounters a sophmore slump, will Turner's production and the dependibility of Tony Gonzalez be enough to fuel the Falcons offense? Also, how do you see the Falcons finishing this season, any chance of the playoffs in the winter?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:25 PM)

There will be no sophomore slump for Ryan.

Lloyd (Baton Rouge, LA)

Do you see any of the NFC South teams realistically making it to the SB within the next 3 years?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:26 PM)

Yes, could even happen this year. If things break exactly right, I could see it happening for Saints, Falcons or Panthers. Not saying it will happen. Just saying it could. All right, I've got to get into Raheem's press conference. Stay tuned to the NFC South blog and our news page for updates.
