Chat with Eric Karabell

Eric Karabell
  (3:01 PM)

Hello all and welcome to another fantasy sports chat! Lots to get to today, as baseball has a month to go and football starts in eight days... any questions?

Doug (NY)

EK, your thoughts please sir....on....Brett Myers? Closer, Starter? All around good guy?

Eric Karabell
  (3:02 PM)

Potentially yes...not until next season and .... well, probably not. Seriously, I think Lidge is going to be ok, but if he falters again, Myers could absolutely get a chance to close...

scott (pvd)

#2 pick. don't love it. can't trade it. 6pts per qb td. take brees? brady?

Eric Karabell
  (3:03 PM)

No, I don't think I would take a QB there. I realize 6 points rather than 4 is a big deal, but I still go with a RB there... MJD or Turner

austin (va)

whats the best position to draft?

Eric Karabell
  (3:05 PM)

Well, I still think it's first, because I believe Adrian Peterson is gonna go for 2,000 yards and be the best player. Don't we all want the best player? Plus, I have no problem picking at the end of round 2... I enjoy it. Plenty of good players out there. The mere fact there's no consensus No. 2 pick is proof to me... you wanna go first, or last. I always want to pick back to back...

Ryan (Detroit)

According to the espn.com projections, I calculated that in a ppr league Ray Rice is the 14th best RB. Would I be silly to take him among the top-20 backs? Thanks!

Eric Karabell
  (3:07 PM)

Not silly at all. It's your team. And I do mean that... I happen to think the Ravens will share the carries, but it doesn't mean they will. If you want Rice, go for it. That's not reaching too much...

Anthony (Cali)

Rajai Davis or Adam Jones?

Eric Karabell
  (3:08 PM)

Not a Jones fan... hitting .222 since the A-S break and he's hurt again. Might be a lost second half and they might just shut him down. Davis isn't great, but he can run...

Grant (Chantilly Va)

EK! I jsut got Marshawn Lynch in the 5th round. Where do you think he would get drafted sans a three game suspension?

Eric Karabell
  (3:08 PM)

Probably round 3. But the fact he's gone from top-10 pick a year ago to even round 3 is very telling.

J.B. (Dunmore, PA)

I'm carrying two TEs (I know, bad idea) and have what I feel are two sleepers in Visanthe Shiancoe and Brent Celek. In your opinion, which one has the better upside?

Eric Karabell
  (3:09 PM)

Probably Shiancoe... but I think both are going way too late in drafts. They aren't going at all! Kind of crazy.. .absoltely wait on a TE if you don't get a top guy...

Nick (Cincy)

Eric, your knee-jerk reaction to the following lineup: Rivers, Peterson, DeAngelo Williams, Fitzgerald, Ocho, Walter, Carlson, Jets D/ST, and Crosby.

Eric Karabell
  (3:10 PM)

A thing of beauty...

Greg (Huntsville, TX)

Buster Posey just got called up. What do you expect out of him in September?

Eric Karabell
  (3:10 PM)

He should have been for the past week when Bengie Molina was hurt... Eli Whiteside started last night! Anyway, I don't know if they will use Posey much. I'm assuming Molina is just about ready to play.

Rand (St. Paul)

Hey Eric, how high do you have DeAngelo Williams? I love him because last year he basically won every league for the teams that had him. But other people are not as high because of Jonathan Stewart, but hes way too injury prone right?

Eric Karabell
  (3:11 PM)

I think people are coming around to the fact Stewart has not been able to stay healthy, and Williams is looking better and better... just got into my top 5 recently.

Mike (Dallas)

2QB league -- do I deal Brady and D Ward/Lewis to get back Rodgers and Slaton/Jacobs??

Eric Karabell
  (3:11 PM)

I certainly would...

J.B. (Dunmore, PA)

Of Jeremy Maclin and Kevin Walter, who should I start in Week 1 and do you think that answer will be the same by Week 6?

Eric Karabell
  (3:12 PM)

I think it's Walter in both cases... not sure why people expect Maclin to play a lot right away... and that's knowing Curtis is probably hurt again.

Max (CA)

EK - Drop Orton for garrard as a backup to Ryan?

Eric Karabell
  (3:12 PM)

No. Why, because Orton hurt his finger? You don't need Orton the first few weeks anyway...

Joel (Minnesota)

Eric, you really believe AP will run for 2k even though the Vikes have Chester who will undoubtedly get a lot of touches?

Eric Karabell
  (3:13 PM)

Sure do. I can see Chester catching 50 passes, too. Favre will throw a lot of safe little screens this season.

Brian (Brooklyn)

I'm nervous about Schaub as my QB1. Who do you like as a QB2 between Garrard, Hasselbeck, and Flacco?

Eric Karabell
  (3:13 PM)

I'm a little nervous, but not too much. Maybe in Week 1... but it's Garrard for me.

James (Aberdeen, MD)

EK - need some OF help for my playoff run: Carlos Gonz, Rajai Davis or Travis Snider ?

Eric Karabell
  (3:14 PM)

Gonzalez is the best fantasy player for this month. Can hit and run... and most importantly, he plays every day.

Ted (Falls Church, VA)

Deep Keeper League...Laporta or Posey?

Eric Karabell
  (3:14 PM)

Good one! I think Posey will have lesser numbers in 2010 and beyond, but since he's a catcher, and likely a top-10 option by 2011, I say him.

Dino (the Bar )

What are your thoughts on what is wrong with Chris Young? Doesn't seem any better with this call up.

Eric Karabell
  (3:15 PM)

Looks like a 4-A player, which stinks because I invested in him in a key league. Big league pitching knows how to get him out, and he cannot adjust. His numbers in the minors couldn't mean less.

James (Aberdeen, MD)

Follow-up on CarGo..... you don't think he'll lose playing time to Dexter Fowler when he comes off the DL ?

Eric Karabell
  (3:16 PM)

Not one bit. Fowler plays CF... and Eric Young and Spilborghs and Seth Smith do not need to play.

Joey (tx)

James Davis, Beanie Wells, or Donald Brown? I sadly have all 3.

Eric Karabell
  (3:16 PM)

That's 2 rookies too many for any fantasy team... keep them around and see who emerges, if any. I think all 3 will have value, but not in Week 1.

Daren (Portland, OR)

What do you expect from Fred Jackson the first 3 games? Worth starting at flex?

Eric Karabell
  (3:17 PM)

I don't think he's a great flex even with Lynch out, but sure, I could make the case. They also have Rhodes to catch the ball...

Mike (Philly, PA)

I'm going to have to drop a SP out of these guys: Brett Anderson, J. De La Rosa, James Shields, Scott Kazmir

Eric Karabell
  (3:17 PM)

After he gets shelled tonight... Kazmir. But most people would tell you to cut Anderson.

Marc (Big D)

Is Pierre Thomas going to get the bulk of the carries in NO? If not, will he get enough touches to be an RB2?

Eric Karabell
  (3:18 PM)

I think he will be healthy for the season and yes, be a worthy RB2.

Andrew K (Yonkers, NY)

Does Flacco have potential to become QB1?

Eric Karabell
  (3:19 PM)

Not in Baltimore's conservative offense, no.

Tim (Chicago)

If you had AP and Chester Taylor would you start them both in your backfield over Ward or Hightower?

Eric Karabell
  (3:19 PM)

Certainly AP always starts.. . after that I still say Ward. You know, he might share carries, but he might still go off with what he gets. And he's playing Dallas Week 1..he's seen them before.

James (Aberdeen, MD)

I noticed on Relief Efforts you have Kevin Jepsen on the rise (I rostered him more than 3 weeks ago) but why is LaTroy Hawkins so low on your list? Since he's come off the DL his peripherals have been solid.

Eric Karabell
  (3:21 PM)

Both have been solid, really. No real reason. I think Valverde is getting all the saves just like Fuentes, but Fuentes could pitch sporadically when all is clinched...

Jacob (Houston)

Hey Eric, so I wasn't expecting to go QB-WR-WR to start my draft, but I wasn't expecting to get the 9th pick in a 10-team 2-QB league either... Will K.Smith, McFadden, Ward and J.Stewart be enough at RB?

Eric Karabell
  (3:22 PM)

Too unbalanced for now, but certainly a few of the RBs could emerge and be safe starters. I like to make sure I get depth at RB-WR before worrying about a QB...

Jake (Eden Prairie, MN)

Over/under 1200 yards 6TDs for Brandon Marshall this year?

Eric Karabell
  (3:23 PM)

Risky to me. Under on both. And he does not get traded.

James (Aberdeen, MD)

Can Chris Coghlan really keep this up? I'm thinking about rostering him but I always worry/wonder about that nasty "market correction" that is due to come......

Eric Karabell
  (3:24 PM)

Not a big power guy at all, and always hit for average, so I think he's safe at this point.

Mike (Philly, PA)

Lets talk Mets...... out of these three (two of which were unfortunately on my fantasy rosters this year) ..... which one will have a nice bounce-back year in 2010: Jose Reyes, Carlos Beltran, David Wright

Eric Karabell
  (3:24 PM)

I have no reason to question these guys moving forward... all should bounce back. But I will hedge a bit in drafts from their 2009 ranking.

Jake (Eden Prairie, MN)

Wait why do you say he wont get traded?

Eric Karabell
  (3:25 PM)

Just a hunch. Jets need WR help, but this guy is a problem off the field...

Dave (Jersey)

Votto or Morales for 2010 and beyond?

Eric Karabell
  (3:25 PM)

Never thought I'd see that comparison! But I still say Votto. Morales has been awesome this season, but I still like Votto.

B (Philly)

Better numbers this year, EK: Lance Moore or Antonio Bryant? GO PHILS!

Eric Karabell
  (3:26 PM)

Bryant is the one... I don't assume Colston gets hurt again, so Moore will be good, but not great. And why can't Bryant be good again? Not like he had a top-10 QB last season either.

Braintooth ((Wis))

I have Schaub, who I know you love,,, but with the injury bug lurking,,, Do I keep Garrard as backup or go for Orton or someone else in that range?

Eric Karabell
  (3:28 PM)

Well, I don't love him, but think he can be very good. With him I make sure I have a safe backup, but both Garrard and Orton are. I would prefer Orton, but I can be convinced otherwise.

Peter (Seattle)

Drop Kazmir after he gets shelled tonight? Have the Mariners shelled any pitcher sine 2001?

Eric Karabell
  (3:29 PM)

They shelled Washburn right after trading him away... I'm just saying I do not trust Kazmir.

Jeff (NYC)

Are you on the Percy Harvin bandwagon?

Eric Karabell
  (3:29 PM)

For where he's going in drafts, not really. Nice deep threat, maybe he makes a few big plays and becomes the Devery Henderson of the Vikings. But a weekly play, no?

Matt (MA)

EK - Can you elaborate on your previous answer re: Reyes, Wright and Beltran. Where do you think they should be drafted next year?

Eric Karabell
  (3:30 PM)

I think I had Wright in the 6-8 range, Reyes was my 10 and Beltran around 30. I don't have any evidence Wright will hit 25 homers next season, but I do think he can hit for power if he wants to.

Ryan (PA)

I drafted Warner and then Schaub for insurance. What are the chances they both get hurt?

Eric Karabell
  (3:31 PM)

The fact you are asking the question should be proof enough... get a third QB. I took a 3rd QB in a draft earlier today.. .can't ever remember doing that before. Took Orton in round 15, which is great. Already had Cassel and Favre..

Andrew K (Yonkers, NY)

random question, when will ESPN kickoff the start to the fantasy basketball season?

Eric Karabell
  (3:31 PM)

Any day now, any day...

Vinnie (Albuquerque)

E.K. Please some advice on where to pick QBs in a six pt. passing td league. All you ever hear is that it is a big deal but how much?

Eric Karabell
  (3:33 PM)

It can't be quantified how much. You still feel your way through a draft. I would say use your scoring system to write out projections and see how much better Brees really is. Is he a first-rounder? I think he can be, but you still need good RB-WR as well.

Etrain (SF)

Orton, Cassel and Favre??? You are bumming!

Eric Karabell
  (3:34 PM)

12-team league, I waited a while.. but I am ok with that. Surely one of them will be worth using regularly.

James (Aberdeen, MD)

Can Cameron Maybin in 2010 = Adam Jones in 2009 ?

Eric Karabell
  (3:34 PM)

I think he can, but I'd hope he shoots for higher than that. Jones has not played well in 2 months. But yeah, I could see those numbers, with a lotta strikeouts.

Scott (SC)

Am I wasting my #1 waiver priority waiting to see if Heyward or Strasburg comes up? Don't want to use it on Flowers or Posey since I already have Mauer. Anyone else I should target for my dynasty league?

Eric Karabell
  (3:35 PM)

Strasburg is not coming up. I could see Heyward, but I am skeptical. Flowers and Posey are already up, but I doubt they play very much.

Mike (Nashville (with hot girlfriend))

Eric, I think Wright WANTED to hit HRs this season, but realized with that park he wasn't going to and changed his approach. Don't we have to see if they bring the fences in before ranking him?

Eric Karabell
  (3:36 PM)

I think the ballpark is some of it, but he also adjusted his approach to hit more line drives. He hit more home runs at home than on the road... that's on Wright, not dimensions.

Adam (St. Louis)

Is Joe Mauer really a 1st round pick in 2010?

Eric Karabell
  (3:36 PM)

He's close in my mind, but not top 10.

RJ (Boston)

Which late-round receiver do you like best for this year: Steve Smith (NYG), Nate Washington, Domenik Hixon, or Chris Henry?

Eric Karabell
  (3:36 PM)

Henry then Smith. Henry is gonna catch TDs, and Smith will get catches... if you combine them you might have a fantasy monster!

Andrew K (Yonkers, NY)

Rice, Bradshaw, Lewis, Benson. Best to worst?

Eric Karabell
  (3:37 PM)

Rice, Bradshaw, Benson and then Lewis...

Aaron (AR)

EK, What does ESPN fantasy leagues offer over its competitors? My friends and I are considering switching to ESPN fantasy leagues.

Eric Karabell
  (3:38 PM)

Karabell and Berry. OK, really, I've heard we're free. And we rock.

Tuttle (Michigan)

Pineiro's rougher start last night: bump in the road on a great year, or sign that the smoke is dissipating and the mirrors are cracked?

Eric Karabell
  (3:38 PM)

Wasn't that rough at all... still good enough, and the Cards never lose when he pitches.

Bob (Madison, WI)

How much difference does a Quarterbacks rankings change if its a 4pt TD league vs. a 6pt league? Seems to me either way I'm waiting on a QB until at least the 5th or 6th round. Your thoughts?

Eric Karabell
  (3:39 PM)

Seems that way to me, too, but I do think it pushes QBs up a bit. I also think the top tier gains more in comparison. I mean, Brees comes guaranteed, and he throws a ton of TDs...

scott (topeka (KS))

What kind of #'s do you expect from Devin Hester this year?

Eric Karabell
  (3:40 PM)

Maybe 50 catches, 700 yards, 6 TDs... people will likely be disappointed.

Austin (California)

Why all the hate on Roy Williams? If Romo is going to put up monster numbers he is going to have to throw them to someone and Witten can only get max 1100 yards. What kind of stats do you see for Roy?

Eric Karabell
  (3:41 PM)

He's not as good as T.O., so to assume he simply puts up T.O. numbers is a reach. I think a number of Dallas WRs are going to share the fun, and watch Felix Jones catch a lot of passes.

Morgan (Baltimore)

I have the 1st pick in my fantasy football draft tonight - 16 teams, 6 points for a passing TD. I still draft AP, right? Would it be crazy to take Brees or Brady? The top 5 scorers last year were QBs!

Eric Karabell
  (3:43 PM)

QBs are normally the highest scorers in every league. The reason we take RBs is because there are less top choices, and in many leagues you can play 3 of them each week, not only 1. But all that said, Brees in round 1 is fine if you want. I take AP first.

J.B. (Dunmore, PA)

Should players like Harvin, Pat White, and Derrick Williams get more consideration because of their 'Wildcat' abilities? These are just examples of players. Any multi-dimensional player would do.

Eric Karabell
  (3:44 PM)

No. The wildcat offense is nice, but how often do you see it at the goal line? It's not enough of a differentiator for me.

JON (NY NY)

who is worth a bench spot, JAMES DAVIS or GLEN COFFEE? i own neither Jamal Lewis or Frank Gore

Eric Karabell
  (3:44 PM)

Both are bench worthy no matter who you own. I would go Coffee over Davis. I think Lewis will still get the ball plenty. You want Coffee in case Gore gets hurt. Better offense.

Grant (Chicago)

If you're activating Wright in a daily lineups league, you're keeping his replacement around, too, aren't you? There're going to be missed games, no?

Eric Karabell
  (3:45 PM)

I think he will play regularly. He's not going to want to sit games.

Vinny (NYC)

Rd 5 of a keeper league too early for F.Jones?

Eric Karabell
  (3:46 PM)

A little bit, but if you think he's going to be a monster, go for it. I took Jones today at pick 89... I thought it was great value.

Joseph (Denver)

Am I the only Eddie Royal owner hoping Marshall ends up doing sit-ups on his driveway come October?

Eric Karabell
  (3:47 PM)

Probably. You don't want to see those double teams, do you? Royal will be fine either way.

Gerard (NYC)

Ethics Q - My league does not require a kicker be drafted. I burned my last pick on an upside RB and plan on dropping him or someone else (depending on news) prior to my first game for a kicker. Scummy or smart?

Eric Karabell
  (3:47 PM)

Amazing timing! I have an email draft going on right now and I found out today I can do exactly that. So I will. Have one pick left, and will use it on a RB... then sign a kicker next Thurs afternoon!

Derrick Ward (Tamp Bay)

Would you start me or Jamal Lewis for week one?

Eric Karabell
  (3:48 PM)

Don't we have another week before these questions? Honestly, we don't know enough about either the TB or CLE running situations yet. A lot can change.

Jeff (Portland, ME)

The Brewers have called up JJ HArdy. Old news, I know. But he is usually a second half monster. Yes, the half way point has passed. But would it be a wise move to claim him for the final push, especially if you lost M.Young at short?

Eric Karabell
  (3:49 PM)

You sure you "lost" Young? He could play today, you know. Hardy should split time with Escobar... I have low expectations.

Jason (Bmore)

Since you're a self-proclaimed Philly fan, does McCoy get enough touches be be a flex play, or do we have to wait for Westbrook to get hurt?

Eric Karabell
  (3:49 PM)

He's not close to a flex play yet.

Aaron (AR)

Is Cincy's WR Chris Henry worthy of a bench spot? Also who would rather have between Mendenhall, Bradshaw, or Donald Brown?

Eric Karabell
  (3:50 PM)

Yes, I think Henry will get 7 or 8 TDs, maybe more. And Bradshaw.

Bill (Fort Atkinson, WI)

EK, please tell everyone to stop trying to discover the secret formula and just make sure that at the end of the 6th round they have 3 RBs and 3 WRs and all will be fine in the world.

Eric Karabell
  (3:50 PM)

Shhh... then everyone will know what I think.... oh wait....

Marc (Big D)

Hines Ward or Kevin Walter as a WR3?

Eric Karabell
  (3:52 PM)

Ward is safe... both are, but Ward should be better.

Michael (NYC)

EK - Let's not forget about baseball. Picked up Ibanez and dropped Dye. Better of two post-break evils? Thanks

Eric Karabell
  (3:52 PM)

Ugh. Ibanez really struggling. Have to choose Dye here.

Jason (Bmore)

Not much is discussed about starting a WR @ the flex position. All things considered, the best player should start, correct?

Eric Karabell
  (3:53 PM)

Best player, yes. Assuming it's a decent matchup.

Craig G. (Fairfield, California)

Streak for the Cash tonight: Kazmir over King Felix or Beckett over Garza?

Eric Karabell
  (3:53 PM)

LOVE that game... Beckett

Nick (Chicago)

Drop Bobby Engram for Coffee or Henry?

Eric Karabell
  (3:54 PM)

Probably. I don't see much upside for Engram, especially if Cassel is out, which he appears to be. Coffee might be a flex in September.

Dave (Charleston)

I know it is ridiculous but in an 8 team league with only 4 bench spots, do I need a backup for Schaub (would have to cut Royal, K Smith, M Lynch or B Marshall) or should I just figure I can get someone off waivers fairly easily when he goes down?

Eric Karabell
  (3:55 PM)

Yeah, just wait. Some good starting QBs are free agents in that league...

Tom (NY)

Hey EK who do you like more Padilla, Hudson or Homer Bailey?

Eric Karabell
  (3:55 PM)

Timmy!

Jeff (Baltimore)

If Pablo Sandoval is C eligible..... is he a top 5 catcher next year?

Eric Karabell
  (3:56 PM)

He sure is...

Tom (NY)

Will Jamal Lewis have the starting job by week 10?

Eric Karabell
  (3:56 PM)

He'll have it all season.

Bruce (NY)

your opinions on D Bowe

Eric Karabell
  (3:57 PM)

No reason to think he has a bad season. He did fine in 2008, didn't he?

Eric (CO)

Pick up Russell as my 3rd QB or should I get Vick to back up my McNabb?

Eric Karabell
  (3:58 PM)

Russell... low expectations for Vick...

Gary (Boston)

You starting Leon Washington week 1 in a flex spot?

Eric Karabell
  (3:58 PM)

Doubtful

Tom (NY)

Will Marion barber have more TD's than Felix Jones and Tashard Choice combined?

Eric Karabell
  (3:58 PM)

yes

Dave (Charleston)

I did the whole don't draft a kicker (or defense for that matter) but now I have to figure out who to drop out of Chris Henry, Earl Bennett, and Patrick Crayton in a PPR league.

Eric Karabell
  (3:58 PM)

Probably Crayton

CC (Atlanta)

Is Berrian is solid #3 WR this year?

Eric Karabell
  (3:59 PM)

Absolutely

J.B. (Dunmore, PA)

Excellent 'South Park' reference, EK.

Eric Karabell
  (3:59 PM)

I try

Eric Karabell
  (4:00 PM)

OK, that is all the time we have for today, so thanks for the great questions and look for more chats tomorrow. And the KaraBlog is back, check out the multiple entries each day on the fantasy pages....adios!
