Chat with AJ Mass

AJ Mass
  (11:00 AM)

Good morning, gang... we've got September baseball and the last NFL games that won't count in the standings on tap for today. Here to take your Q's for the next hour. Who's got the first one?

Michael (Milwaukee)

Is it safe to drop Adam Jones, or will he recover and bite me the last week of the playoffs when my opponent picks him up?

AJ Mass
  (11:02 AM)

From all I hear, you can safely drop him... there's no reason to believe the O's will suddenly put him back in the lineup just for the last week of the season.

Jason (Ellicott City, MD)

Viva la AJ Mass! Would you prefer baseball or football questions?

AJ Mass
  (11:04 AM)

Matters not to me... I'll try to take some of both. Depends what the room wants...

Craig (St. Paul, MN)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but a commissioner drafting Rob Bironas in the 14th round of a 17 round draft is proof they are unfit for their position, right? How can I possibly trust his abilities now!?!

AJ Mass
  (11:06 AM)

LOL. Here's the only reason to take a kicker early - if you honestly have five or six guys ranked evenly left on your board and want "someone else" to make the choice for you by waiting a round and seeing who is left -- which is also kind of weak, but at least has some ground to stand on.

Bob (NY)

Whats all this talk about Jamal Lewis not even making it out of camp? As of right now is he not the guy to own in Cleveland?

AJ Mass
  (11:08 AM)

This news came out of a beat writer's opinion piece and made the rounds quickly. I find it hard to believe he won't make the roster, but it DOES speak to exactly how well James Davis is playing.

waycooljr (ponca city oklahoma)

is it safer to start percy harvin or patrick crayton?

AJ Mass
  (11:09 AM)

I think it's still too soon to make that kind of call, with one more game to go. However, upside I think goes to Harvin, and I'd rather DRAFT him.

Mark (Lincoln)

any reason to think Brantley can provide 5-8 sb without killing my average this month??

AJ Mass
  (11:10 AM)

I think you have to accept a hit to the average will accompany any stats he gives you - but at the same time you make that sacrifice, especially if you're sitting with Grady, who is unlikely to give you anything at all.

Ray (Cincinnati)

Can you give us some late WR and RB sleepers?

AJ Mass
  (11:11 AM)

Check out ESPN's "Sleepers 2.0" article, now up on the site...

Mark (DC)

Would you hesitate to bench struggling guys like Dye or Upton for people like Pagan, LaPorta, or Carlos Guillen?

AJ Mass
  (11:12 AM)

Time is running out, and if you need to make a move, you make it. I wouldn't hesitate rolling the dice in a non-keeper league and even CUT a big name for a streaky call-up.

Kantad (NYC)

Ok - I know your not supposed to take two TE, but as an example, I have Gates, and Cooley was still hanging around in the 2nd to last round, so I picked him as a someone to trade for that WR or RB I'll surely need later. Is that a stupid move?

AJ Mass
  (11:13 AM)

If Cooley was left in the second to last round, you are likely playing in a very small league or in one with a bunch of guys you will easily beat...

Gary (Boston)

Is Ray Rice a legit RB2? And would you feel comfortable starting Leon Washington in your flex position week 1?

AJ Mass
  (11:14 AM)

Yes on both. I think Rice will get most of the carries in BAL, and Willis will not impact him at all. (McClain mostly used as FB) As for Leon, I would even go so far as to draft him in Round 6 in a 12-team and feel lucky to have him. More and more I think he has a superstar breakout year.

Kevin (Stamford, CT)

Can you name some call ups that could have a big impact?

AJ Mass
  (11:17 AM)

Maybin is back, possibly Hudson in Chicago. I also like Wade Davis in TB.

jc (austin)

would you rather roster maroney or james davis in a 10 team non ppr?

AJ Mass
  (11:18 AM)

Davis. As I said before, you don't get this much hype from out of nowhere and completely disappear from the radar. Plus, Belichick has no issue rotating Maroney, Taylor, Green-Ellis, the ballboy, and the mascot in that backfield.

Jerry (Marietta)

Who fills in for Huston Street? Saves hotly contested in my league and every single save is important.

AJ Mass
  (11:19 AM)

Morales and Betancourt timeshare, depending on who is due up (lefty/righty).

Mitch D (Harrisburg, PA)

Hey AJ, what information does Ben Linus have on Daniel Hudson?

AJ Mass
  (11:20 AM)

If memory serves, he was 9-0 at Double and Triple-A this year while rising all the way from the low minors in one calendar year. He's on the fast track and should compete for a rotation spot in 2010.

Ryan (St Louis)

You taking a flier on Hakeem Nicks? I foolishly drafted only 2 WR and have 4RB's w/ a QB on my bench.

AJ Mass
  (11:22 AM)

Nicks is certainly a guy I like late in drafts. Somebody has to catch Eli's passes, and he's shown the ability to do so.

Frank (NJ)

Without the DL spot a option , should M Young be dropped?

AJ Mass
  (11:22 AM)

I don't think you can wait on him with two weeks being a "best case scenario" right now.

Michael (Milwaukee)

Garland a good start tonight against his old team?

AJ Mass
  (11:24 AM)

The road/home splits for 2009 would seem to say yes. After all, this is a "road game" in Los Angeles from Garland's season-long perspective, and he's done well away from Chase.

Hey AJ- What do you see out of Posey NEXT year? I just picked him up in a keeper league, and can keep him for $2 (we can keep as many as we want and sign to long-term deals, $5 increase each year)

AJ Mass
  (11:25 AM)

I think he'll definitely beat out a guy like Eli for backup duties, assuming that's what the organization wants him to do - of course, let's see how he handles whatever PT he gets this month.

Jason (Deer Park, NY)

Who is Brian Duensing? And should I care?

AJ Mass
  (11:27 AM)

I don't think you'll want the Twins starter the rest of this month, even with a good outing against the Chisox. Could he be around in 2010? absolutely.

Rob (NJ)

Do you have Tommy Hanson ranked third in your daily notes because he is that good, or because it is a limited day and he is the best of the bunch?

AJ Mass
  (11:28 AM)

A little of both, Rob. Hanson is not yet near the top 20 guys, but with the slate this sparse, he definitely stands out from the rest of the pack. I didn't hesitate to place him there, that's for sure.

Brent (Atlanta, GA)

Not to bust your chops AJ but Nicks has CAUGHT Carr's passes for TD's and not Eli. Plus, the guys he burned will be working at a fast food restaurant a week from now.

AJ Mass
  (11:30 AM)

Fair point, Brent. But we do know Eli's under center come Week 1 and I'm not feeling too optimistic about Sinorice and Mario. Again I say it... someone has to catch the passes.

Jarrett (NJ)

Do you have Boss or Keller ranked higher on your own TE rankings? This seems like a good year to wait on that position and both seem to have Top-10 value.

AJ Mass
  (11:31 AM)

I'm definitely waiting on TE - Carlson, Shiancoe, Boss, Keller --- I'd be happy with any of the bunch.

Brad (Indianapolis)

Is Lance Moore the clear second WR to have from New Orleans after Colston? Depth chart lists D. Henderson as second starter.

AJ Mass
  (11:32 AM)

Devery "1 catch for 70 or zero catches at all" Henderson is never going to be on any of my teams. Moore may not "start" but he'll get you far more regular performance output.

Eric Shelton (Carolina)

You dont get this much hype out of nowhere and fall of the radar???? Someone should have told me and Garret Wolfe!

AJ Mass
  (11:34 AM)

No fair with Shelton example - we're assuming no injuries here. And Wolfe too, didn't have this much hype.

Brad (Indianapolis)

Josh Morgan or Percy Harvin- non PPR league.

AJ Mass
  (11:35 AM)

Harvin... I think they'll use him on reverses and on other quick passes to utilize his speed in Minny. I'm not as confident the 49ers have a plan for Josh.

Dan (Philly)

What are your thoughts on hasselback? Is he a steal for how late he is going this year?

AJ Mass
  (11:37 AM)

It's weird that I've done many mock drafts this pre-season and not only have I not picked Hasselbeck, I've not even had to consider him. I've either grabbed Brees/Brady early, Warner in the middle, or simple waited long enough for Matt to be gone. I think he is a great value post-Round 8 after Carson is gone, yes.

Rick (TX)

friend of mine took jamal charles in the 6th round. incredibly dumb, or steal of the draft?

AJ Mass
  (11:39 AM)

I think Charles does something, even if LJ has a good year - and if LJ doesn't then this is the steal of the draft. Much like my Leon Washington love or someone who thinks Darren Sproles is the man this year... a 6th round gamble on one of them, assuming you've had a good first 5 rounds is fine by me.

AJ Mass
  (11:40 AM)

I think Charles does something, even if LJ has a good year - and if LJ doesn't then this is the steal of the draft. Much like my Leon Washington love or someone who thinks Darren Sproles is the man this year... a 6th round gamble on one of them, assuming you've had a good first 5 rounds is fine by me.

AJ Mass
  (11:47 AM)

Sorry about that gang --- major technical crisis solved.

Any word on when Sizemore will be shut down?

AJ Mass
  (11:48 AM)

No word yet - but if Grady has to go under the knife, it makes sense to do it sooner rather than later.

Adam (Louisville, KY)

Hey AJ, I picked up Favre as soon as it broke he was flying to Minny. I have Flacco and M. Ryan as my QBs. Should I try and use him as trade bait, or give up one of my other two QBs?

AJ Mass
  (11:48 AM)

Float all three and take the best offer. Why limit your options?

Mike (NJ)

Sanchez or Flacco for backup - QB?

AJ Mass
  (11:49 AM)

I think Sanchez will be fantastic longterm, but I love Flacco for 2009. I can even see him slipping into the Top 10 QB.

Brian (Pittsburgh)

Jeff or Jordan talking to Julie tonight on BB?

AJ Mass
  (11:50 AM)

Jordan, if Kevin has a brain... but since nobody on that show other than Michelle seems to be able to work the thinking muscle, Jeff it is.

Jason (Ellicott City, MD)

Do you watch the Real World: Cancun? If so please spoil last night.

AJ Mass
  (11:51 AM)

I do not. But I can still spoil it... A hookup causes major anger from a jealous roommate and somebody drinks way too much and a fight breaks out.

Rob ((VA))

Should expectations for the SD defense be closer to 2007 performance or 2008?

AJ Mass
  (11:52 AM)

They'll be much better this season, and as a result, Rivers' stats will be a bit more "normal" as there won't be as many 45-41 scoreboard fests.

Drew (Hudson Valley)

Why so high on Kevin Smith this year?

AJ Mass
  (11:53 AM)

Love what he did last season once Daunte took over - with no O-line to speak of. Line is better, and offense will be balanced (no longer in residual Mike Martz-mode).

Dave (NYC)

Will Marshawn Lynch be on any of your teams?

AJ Mass
  (11:54 AM)

He hasn't been, but it's not a "statement" - just that I've noticed that he's being drafted higher than I personally would take him due to the suspension. Certainly I am not avoiding him.

Jim (Pittsburgh)

Is changing your defense every week based on the matchup a good strategy?

AJ Mass
  (11:56 AM)

I think you'll get burned without having a "go-to" defense. That's not to say you can't use another roster spot to make a one-week waiver claim on the team playing a weak offense. But, especially with bye weeks, I don't think you can pull it off for a whole year.

Drew (Hudson Valley)

Is Brandon Marshall completely avoidable this year even he goes to the Jets?

AJ Mass
  (11:58 AM)

I think he's not going to the Jets. If so, then he actually might be worth something. As it is, Mr. Pouty has value, but you can't make him your WR1 or WR2 since you don't know when/if he'll finally play.

Mike (Indy)

Didn't you just spoil every episode of the real world.....ever!!

AJ Mass
  (11:58 AM)

Ding ding ding!

Gabe (NJ)

Is Earl Bennet woth a late round flier?

AJ Mass
  (11:59 AM)

Absolutely... in fact, I'd pick him before Hester.

Matty (Harrisburg)

Considering your love for Washington, would you start him over McFadden?

AJ Mass
  (12:00 PM)

Probably not. I like Run DMC as well, but I'd seriously consider Leon for flex.

Gray (Chicago)

Is the Uggla-Ramirez fight a sign Chris Coghlan may be the Opening Day 2B in Florida?

AJ Mass
  (12:01 PM)

It was an argument, not a fight... big difference. And if the team suddenly reels off 10-in-a-row, I think it will be forgotten.

Chet (Philly)

Hey AJ - how about some late round football fliers in a keeper league. 16 teams, 14 rounds, so think in the 200 range...

AJ Mass
  (12:02 PM)

Been looking at Brian Hartline a lot... could well be a solid producer in Miami. Also Laurent Robinson in STL.

Richard (Greensboro, NC)

Ignoring matchups and assuming similar quality, should RB generally be the flex play in the RB-WR slot?

AJ Mass
  (12:03 PM)

Yes, because I'd rather have a guaranteed number of touches. RBs who get 15-20 carries will generally produce more than the "hope" of 5-7 receptions --- again, equal talent.

Chris (Atlanta)

AJ, what are you thoughts on how the order of preseason waiver order? I say it should be the reverse of the draft order...our commish says it's random just like the draft order was.

AJ Mass
  (12:05 PM)

Start from scratch league with random draft order? I'd actually use reverse order of 1st round of draft for pre-season waivers - but random works too, as long as it was decided on before the draft itself.

Phil (Chicago)

Assumming Brady Quinn in the starter is their any chance he could replicate Derek Anderson's miracle year from a couple years ago or would he be a wasted pick?

AJ Mass
  (12:06 PM)

I don't think he'll get anywhere near that season, though I do believe he will get the start Week 1. I'm not touching him.

AJ Mass
  (12:07 PM)

OK gang... thanks for the Q's. Unfortunately, we're out of time... Be sure to follow me over to Twitter, and we'll see you the next time on "Villa Alegre"
