What a beautiful day in the Carolinas. A crispness in the air, blue skies and college football starts tonight. A lot of work to do on my fantasy football draft as well, but for the next hour I'm all yours. Fire away.
David, do you think that they Darnell move is basically a sign that he'll be in a 3rd Yates car next year? You think McMurray will be there too?
Darnell is in the car because his sponsor from the Nationwide Series was willing to foot the bill for him in a Cup ride but not Labonte. If he does well he definitely could be there. As for McMurray, all is quiet, but I am told a decision will be announced very soon. If he's smart he'll move to Yates. At least that's my opinion.
Hey david do u think nascar is going to make any major changes to this junk car?
Nope. They may move around some weight to give it more front-end downforce, and they're looking at fuel injection, but nothing major. And don't you think the racing has been pretty darn good lately?
so brad out the 88 who are the canidates for the ride
Kelly Bires appears to be the front-runner. Could be all but a done deal.
Is Bobby Labonte's ride for Atlanta a start and park deal?
I don't think Bobby would have taken it under those circumstances, and David Gilliland never was forced into that.
Can Bobby Labonte use a "champions provisional" to qualify at Atlanta?
No, because he was a late add to the original entry list he cannot.
Is Bobby's new team TRG that Grand Am sports car team owned by Kevin Buckler?
Buckler does own the team. Good one.
I did my part. Have 10 tickets in the Champions Stands!! What is your guess on how the stands will look like come Sunday night? Will the southerner's travel now that the Labor Day race is back in the Southeast?
I'm told ticket sales are up 28 percent. And as I point out in today's column, Labor Day racing belons in the South. I just wish it had remained in Darlington.
I read bobby labonte will be in the 71 car this weekend. i hope he out runs darnell, but now i feel bad for david gilliland
Oh, what a complicated world you live in.
How much saw do sponsors have regarding drivers?
More than they should, and the Labonte move is a perfect example. The sponsors of Darnell's Nationwide car agreed to put some money into a Cup ride if Darnell was in the car, not Labonte. It's sad that it's gotten that way.
Seems like Kurt and Sam really work well as teammates. Will Penske tell Brad K that Penske Racing doesn't tolerate the kind of thing he did at Dega?
Did he really do anything wrong at Dega? And no, I don't think Roger would tell him it's not OK to go for the win.
was Darnell a yates guy in nationwide or is his team unaffiliated?
He's a Roush Fenway Racing guy, which is a Yates guy, which makes him simply a Ford guy. But I'm told this was all a Yates decision, not Roush.
Kyle Busch: in or out of the Chase?
I say in, and I say NASCAR needs him to be in. You need your best drivers vying for a championship, and with four Cup wins Kyle is one of the best drivers.
Who's going home tonight in BB Jeff or Jordan and who do you want to go?
Oh, man. I haven't kept up with Big Brother this season. I used to be a junkie for the show, but have given it up for early evening walks with the wife and dog and tennis. And my plans for tonight include the South Carolina-N.C. State college football opener and Carolina Panthers' preseason game against Pittsburgh.
With common templates, identical horsepower, what is the difference between a Gibbs built car and Robby Gordons?
Technolgoy. Gibbs has a lot more.
I read yesterday that the National Guard is really cutting back on its recruiting. Any idea when their sponsorship deal is up with Hendrick? Could we see a new co-primary on Dale Jr's car next year?
They've already backed off of Junior's car some this season. Jeff Gordon has carried it for a few races. But you're right to expect cutbacks. I'm just not sure how much. And I'm not sure how long the deal runs to be honest.
Do you think Jeff Gordon will ever get back to his days when he won 6, 10, 11 races in a season and will Dale Jr ever get back to his 6 wins season of 2003?
Gordon came close to that two years ago with six wins. He easily could have won a few more this year. He's still got something left in his tank. Don't underestimate him in the Chase.
Is there really any chance Brad Keselowski will come back to Hendrick anytime soon since he signed a muli million dollar deal?
To be honest, what Rick Hendrick said at Bristol about not letting him get too far away was more of a compliment to Brad and how good he is than a statement that he's going after him soon. The deal I'm told is for three years, so he'll have to wait a while. And Brad says he plans a long-term career at Penske. If the equipment is good he will do that.
David, if Earnhardt collects some good finishes over the last few weeks, is that a sign that lance mcgrew will be the guy next year? Or are they still gonna try and go after a big name crew chief? I think they should stick with mcgrew. It seems he's turning this around slowly, but the RIGHT way.
I'd say McGrew is the frontrunner and a solid finish could seal the deal. You're right, though, it's been a slow process.
Will Kurt Busch's dominance from the previous Atlanta race carry over to Sunday night's race?
No reason it shouldn't, but I look for Carl Edwards of Jimmie Johnson to win.
Is David Gilliland's career done? Any prospects for him?
David hasn't done badly with what he's had to work with. Can't blame TRG for going to Labonte for seven races. He gives them a past champion's provisional after this race and that is valuable to a team not guranteed a spot in the field.
Do you think it is right for US taxpayer money to fund GM, Chrysler, National Guard, Amry, Navy, Airforce, Marines, Border Patrol racing activities?
I've got no problem with it. The military folks to talk to say it's a great recrutiing tool for them.
Is Kyle Busch biding his time at Gibbs with plans to go back Henricks to his #5 or even the #24 in the next few years?
If he had plans to go back then my guess he wouldn't say the things he's said in the past about his former organization over the car radio for all to hear. Pretty harsh at times.
dave want some advice on your fantasy football draft?
May need some. All I know right now is that Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Bobby Labonte aren't good picks.
When Jeff Gordon retires, probably early due to physical problems, do you see Kurt Busch taking over the #24? Who else is good enough to maintain the honor of the #24?
I suspect some up-and-coming star just as Gordon was when he took over the ride. I don't see Kurt Busch there.
Just moved into a new house - quickly realizing how Rural it is. Neighbors are all wearing NASCAR shirts. Time for me to get on board. What driver should I start to follow?
If you want to be a front-runner go with three-time defending champion Jimmie Johnson. If you want an up-and-comer go with Joey Logano. If you want to go with the popular choice go with Dale Earnhardt Jr. Welcome aboard.
Is Bobby L getting dumped a wake up call for other older drivers like Burton, Martin, Gordon, Kenseth?
Hardly. The other four you mentioned have all won within the last year and three are in the Chase. Labonte hasn't won a race since 2003 and was 30th in points. If it's a message, it's that mediocre won't be tollerated by owners or sponsors.
Yesterday someone asked Hinton about fuel injection at the restrictor plate tracks? Is there a feasible way to reduce speeds at just those tracks with fuel injection without opening the floodgates for cheating?
That's a tough one and one NASCAR is looking at hard. I wish I had a great technical answer for you, but I don't.
What's going to happen to David Stremme?
He's had two good chances and not done much with them. My guess is he'll have to rebuild in the Nationwide Series.
I was watching some V8 supercar racing on the internet...Its no wonder Marcos Ambrose is having a good year. THOSE cars are beasts and they muscle them around road courses all the time. He's gonna win a cup race next year..MARK IT
I agree. The guy is perfectly suited for the Cup cars and has been quite the pleasant surprise this season.
Since his release from prison we have only seen Gene Haas at Charlotte. Is that due to the terms of his probabation prohibiting him from leaving the state of NC?
To be honest, I haven't looked to see if he's been at any other tracks. Stewart and his team run that program.
Will we ever see Kyle Petty in a car again?
Maybe a pace car.
David, do you think it is right for the US taxpayer to give Billions of dollars for bonuses of Financial Corp CEO? ..NASCAR is a diversion. It helps take our mind off these problems and adds spice to our lives! Hope it lives forever
Without getting heavy into politics, I'm with you.
lol good one dave. but if you want a sleeper pick ray rice the ravens starting running back hes projected in the 100's but is good enough to be one of your starting running backs
Really. That good. I usually take a running back with my first two picks, sometimes my first three, even though we start only two. I'll consider him for the second or third one. I hear he runs the 40 faster than Dale Jr. gets from 0-180 at Talladega.
Are the manufactures pushing the drive to fuel injected engines, overhead cams, electronic management for Nascar? How soon will we see it?
The manufacturers do want it. They believe that it'll help sell cars. Honestly, I don't care what's under the hood as long as the show is good.
What are your thoughts of adding one more road course to the Sprint Cup schedule, maybe even Montreal, and having Infineon be part of the chase?
I'd trade Pocono for a road course today. And I'd love to see Infineon in the Chase. The champion should be about being a complete driver, and without a road course it seems incomplete.
david ragan has been running better lately, do you see a top ten this weekend
How about top 15?
What do you think about rain tires on road coarse? Was it the rain tires or the double file restarts or both that create this miss?
I'm all for it, but the end of the race on Sunday was a mess not worth watching. To blame it all on the tires might not be fair. That's a tight course and with double-file restarts catastrophe is bound to happen. Wonder what Kyle Busch thinks on the matter?
According to the site Bobby can still use his PC Provisional due to he was entered in the race in the 96, and just moved to the new number.
According to NASCAR he can't. I'll go with NASCAR on this one.
What are the chances of Kyle Busch winning both the Nationwide and Sprint cup championships this season? Has that ever been achieved?
I don't think it has been achieved. And if Busch makes the Chase I'd be wary of him. He'll come in with a lot of momentum. The Nationwide Series is a sealed deal.
Will Kenseth's team turn the corner in time, or will he himself have to will them in like he's done many times before?
Hard to say. They've been average for quite a while now and it's hard to imagine a sudden turnaround.
speed is showing the 2004 atlanta race and the grandstands are practically full
At one time it was one of the best attended races on the circuit. Read my column to find out more.
What does everyone do with all the down time like at Watkins Glen when drivers/teams show up on Thursday and the race wasn't over until Monday?
We stand around and talk a lot. Some like to eat, which explains the rather large midsections.
whos your pick for the prelude to the dream. im going with my man schrader.
I'll go with Stewart. He's due.
What is more important to the real Nascar racers? Nascar race wins or Championships?
Both are important, but if given the choice they'd take a title.
Carl Edwards said on Sunday at the Nationwide race that Ranger, I forgot his first name, had a bright future, I dont know about that, what do you think?
He was impressive. Maybe he'll be the next Ambrose. never thought I'd say that.
Hey David, where do you see Justin Allgaier next season???? It appears Brad K. is taking his ride as well.
He needs another season in the Nationwide Series. If all works well he could be in a fourth Penske car by 2011.
Man, you really are harsh on Jr. Did he do something to you?
It was a joke. Nothing more. I really like the guy as I've said repeatedly. I just do that from time to time to tweak you guys.
Plus one for Montreal race? Drivers need to man up in the rain too!
When Petty won his 200 wins did Grand National and Sportsman series wins count? How many races did Petty run in an average year?
In the early years he ran 50-plus and sometimes 60-plus. I'm more impressed with David Pearson. Look at the percentage of wins versus starts. Unbelievable.
David, Hall of Fame racing is splitting from Yates according to the rumor mill. Will they become a satellite operation for another team???? Perhaps back with Gibbs??????
I actually broached the Gibbs possibility with some officials and they said that wasn't on the table right now. I'm betting an organiation such as Earnhardt Ganassi Racing. They need to expand past two cars and this might be the answer. It also would be good for their engine leasing program with Childress.
I'm currently making a custom diecast, reading this chat and Watching NASCAR Classics on SPEED. It's the fall Atlanta race from 2004. They just had a restart and only 9 cars are on the lead lap. It looks absolutely ridiculous to see 9 cars on the outside and everyone else on the inside. Hard to believe that could have been a scene from just a few months ago. At least NASCAR finally got it right and switched the rule.
I'm glad people are finally realizing this was long overdue. Wish I could multi-task as well as you are.
Nascar trivia: What two drug addicts were in the 2004 atlanta race that is on the speed channel right now?
Hmm. I'm guessing you are referring to Shane Hmiel and Jeremy Mayfield, although remember Mayfield isn't totally convicted yet. He still has his day in court coming.
We used to be Dale Jr fans but he doesnt' seem very happy and kind of bored with the whole thing. Has Dale just given up cause he's not in the same class as Kyle, Carl, Kurt, Jimmy?
Hardly. He's working harder than ever. Sometimes you work so hard and when the results aren't there it becomes frustrating. But I suspect he'll bounce back just fine in 2010.
Terry Blount wrote a great article this week about the changes NASCAR needs to make to its Chase schedule. What ten tracks would you like to see comprising the Chase?
Las Vegas, Darlington, Charlotte, Homestead, Infineon, Bristol, Richmond, Phoenix, Texas and Daytona.
Kyle can't win the championship in both series? But Carl and Clint both had the opportunities to do that last season. Was there a rule change?
Who said Kyle can't win the title in both series? He most certainly can if he makes the Chase.
Got a stat for you, Newt. The Sprint Cup series has run four night points races so far in 2009. In those four night races, Mark Martin's finishes have been 1st, 1st, 1st, and 2nd. So I guess the "old man" will be good on Sunday night, eh?
Nice stat. Come up with that one all by yourself?
David, will Elliott sadler be back with RPM next season?
That's what he says. Stay tuned.
Why does Childress feel he has to keep repeating that Harick will be in the #29 in 2010? If Harvik wants out why is Childress wasting time?
Good point. Maybe they're trying to talk each other into believing it.
When will people realise Jr isnt as talented as they want him to be? Many fans are just "wanting" him to be so good.
I think some are realizing a few things now. Not saying he isn't good. I still beieve he has few wins left in him.
What did you mean about Kyle Busch? NASCAR says that he "can't" win both championships in one season? Like he's not allowed to?
I'm lost on that one.
why cants Busch win the cup and nationwide series championship?
Who started this Busch can't win both titles? He can.
We really like Scotty Speed and think he is great for Nascar. Do you see Scotty being the next Brad K?
Not really. He's different for sure, but the jury is still out.
I've been trying to ask alot of chatters this and I haven't gotten an answer yet. What are your thoughts about potential new Chase contenders for 2010? Dale Junior? Joey Logano? Brad Keselowski? Do any of them have a shot?
I'd go with Dale Jr. and Joey Logano. Not sure about Brad just yet.
David tell K. Lee Davis to get off his ass and get your column posted. I don't see it on the website yet.
K. Lee, you heard the man.
Kyle Busch seems like he would be a great team owner. Do you see Kyle or even The Busch Brothers starting a team like Stert-Haas?
No indication at all on that one. If either of the two went that direction it would be Kyle. He's more like Stewart than any of us know.
Do you think Jr is happy that he not buy half of DEI? If that deal went through where do you think DEI would be today?
It would be better off than it is, but I think Junior is pleased with the decision he made.
Have any of the drivers gotten you to try iRacing out yet?
Not yet. Ready to though.
I think you are pretty fair with Junior....at least you acknowledge he might turn it around... your buddy mr. hinton though....I don't know about him...borders on almost grudge territory....If you listen to him you would think Jr. will never win again....
ha... its really funny reading your comments when your replies get off kilter. The funniest one was this...Q: Man, you really are harsh on Jr. Did he do something to you?A: He needs another season in the Nationwide Series. If all works well he could be in a fourth Penske car by 2011.Hilarious!
Not sure how that happens. I just pull up the questions and answer them. How they get turned around or mixed up I have no idea, but will investigate. Maybe, though, this one is right.
So when Larry Mac compares Kyle's 56 Nascar wins at 24 years of age to Mark Martins 94 Nascar wins at 50 years of age, Kyle has a shot at Petty's 200 win record?
Remember, Petty won 200 in the top series. Busch's are a combination. He has 15 or 16 in Cup.
Hey David,Any idea when RPM will announce their manufact. and is Toyota still in play?
Not sure when, but looks like Dodge may keep the Pettys.
David, do you think that Roush not giving his drivers what they need to win has brought up some ill feelings from within the teams? Edwards has to be upset behind closed doors that his cars have been bad, and Kenseth doesn't seem very happy at the moment. Thanks
Not sure about ill feelings, and I believe a few of them are turning the corner. Watch out for Edwards.
Answers got off kilter again. I'm calling fail on the part of ESPN's webmasters/programmers.
I'll check on it immediately. And I mean immediately. The time is 3 o'clock and I have to run. Have a great weekend. Enjoy Labor Day Weekend night racing in the South again.
