Chat with Paul Kuharsky

Paul Kuharsky
  (2:59 PM)

Hi folks, how are we doing? Glad to be here, thanks for joining.

Nick (The Saltman) (Rhode Island)

As a diehard Jaguars fan with a bit of perspective, I don't understand why other fellow fans are getting so disgruntled over an 0-3 pre-season record. First of all, the three losses came at a combined 5 points, and in that Philadelphia game, Jacksonville's first (and partial second teamers) were beating Philly's first string 27-13 at one point. The main concerns I have are the inefficiency at converting third downs on a more consistent basis and the lack of sacks the defense has been getting. What I do like, particularly in that third game, is the different blitz schemes the Jaguars have been showing. Sending cornerbacks on delayed blitzes and having linebackers shoot through different gaps excites me because it's creating paths to get at the quarterback. If they can get their timing down, sacks will come a plenty for the Jaguars defense. My main questions, however, is how many wide receivers do you think the Jaguars will keep?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:02 PM)

For people without your level of interest, your concerns translate to losses and they worry about the losses instead of the things that lead to them.I thought they were better in Philly in a lot of areas. But if those concerns aren't dealt with, the Jags will lose int he regular season too.No,. 0-3 doesn't mean a lot. But it means more to a team like the Jags than it would to a lot of other teams that come into the season in better shape.Holt and Williamson are definites. Walker, Hughes and the three picks. Seven would be too many. I don't know what they will do.

Anthony (Santa Monica)

Should I be worried about the TITANS defense from what I have seen this pre season? A preseason high of 91 points alowed. It has not looked very good. Should I worry about Chris Johnson as well?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:02 PM)

No and no.

val (oly, wa)

will garcon be a productive starter for the colts or in the nfl? also, do you have attention deficit disorder or are you merely a renaissance kinda guy conversant on it all?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:03 PM)

I think he and Collie will both wind up playing a lot, about the same.I prefer to think renaissance.

Phil (Tennessee)

It looks like we are bringing in a couple of WR's for tryouts. Think any might land a contract? Or any ideas of someone who might get cut we would like? Thanks PK

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:05 PM)

I think they wait to see who comes free in cuts Saturday, then could sign Jones depending.A good LB who can play will get cut, maybe two. Guys like Stamer, Allred and even Fowler are at risk, I think.

Eric (Nashville, TN)

What are the Titans thinking with Matt Jones? I realize he had double the catches and yards as the Titans most productive wideout last season...but seriously?! Didn't they learn anything from the Pacman Jones debacle? Jerry Porter is hardly a model citizen either. Thoughts?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:06 PM)

Are they allowed to look at them? Let's wait until they sign one to rip them. Byron Leftwich was in for a visit like this last year. What became of him?

Ed (Arkansas)

The Tennessean is saying that the Titans are looking for a receiver to sign AFTER the Steelers game because any player that is active for the first game of the season is guaranteed their salary for the year. Money aside, doesn't it seem more likely that they are looking for someone to plug in FOR the Steeler game and maybe a few after since Nate Washington is hurt?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:07 PM)

It's not uncommon for there to be a bunch of signings right after week one, and Titans would have an advantage there as they start early. If they want a guy risk free, it's the way to go. Is a new comer going to be a big impact guy in Week One anyway? I think probably not.

greg (apple valley)

the "experts" are somewhat divided on m turner, what do you say?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:08 PM)

I think he's great and will be big again.

Christopher (Memphis, TN)

Will the Titans keep Ramsey on roster? I feel like they would want that roster spot for one of the exceptionally talented people at RB or DL that are on the bubble.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:09 PM)

He'd certainly be a luxury. If things go as you expect and Collins plays all 16, it's a wasted spot. I don't think he winds up one of the best 53, but if they have VY concerns that might not matter.

Brian (Jacksonville, FL)

Paul, I think Gene hit the nail on the head re: blackouts. 1) time to establish the fan base and 2) marketing outside the general area. The marketing window has to be the 75 mile radius where the blackouts impact. I do still feel the early success played into the "used to winning" mentality grounded in the success of U of Miami, FSU and UF. The 2007 success should've helped carry the fan base through 2008, though the economy probably hurt that.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:09 PM)

I feel badly for fans there. But if you like them and don't go, then you get what you get on TV.

jpm (INDY)

Do you think indy will stay with charlie johnson at lt or thy to pick someone up to fit in there this year?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:11 PM)

I think Ugoh will end up back there. But it's a huge issue. If they need a back or a tight end to help him or Johnson, you're talking about taking Addai or Brown or even Clark out of some plays, and that can hurt them.I don't envision them plugging in an outsider at this point, it's not their style. But maybe this shakes them into changing how they operate.

Bill Brasky (Nashville)

Hi Paul. What's up with the Titans bringing in Cleo Lemons today?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:12 PM)

Someone needed to throw to these receivers. And they update their file on him too. If two QBs go down, who knows who they might have to call?

Dunce (Back of the Room)

Here Paul, I know you like questions like this to bring out those fierce quips you wield. Why don't the Titans trade for Brandon Marshall?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:13 PM)

Fun!Because they don't like to a) give up high picks, or any picks really; b) because they don't like malcontents; c) because they don't like to give big contracts to malcontents...

Brian (IN)

Do you expect Troy Williamson to have a break out season?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:14 PM)

I don't know if he will maintain it and I suppose he can be caught by a developing rookie, but his arrow is definitely pointing up right now.And since he's done so little, I think what he does will qualify as breaking out, yes.

Kerry (Nashville)

Having been a Titans fan since the team came to town, I realize the coaches are playing things very "close to the vest" during the pre-season and that the team is much better than the past 4 games have shown. However, having seen the other teams in the division do you feel the Titans are deep enough to overcome their difficult schedule and injuries (inevitable) to win the AFC South again this year?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:15 PM)

The Titans have depth at some spots, and are thin at other spots.Like virtually every good team in the league. If their injuries come at the right spots they are fine, if they come at the wrong spots (QB, LT, CB in particular) they are in big trouble.Just like a lot of teams.

Dave (Canada)

over/under 5.5 Titans get claimed off waivers by Jim Schwartz in Detroit.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:16 PM)

Under.

Ed (Arkansas)

Why is it that you occasionally post a question without answering it? Is it a technical glitch or do you believe that the ones you post that way have no real answer but that the question itself has merit and deserves to be posted?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:17 PM)

No, it's user error when that happens. Apologies. If you point them out I can circle back to them.

Christopher (Memphis, TN)

Do you think the death of Steve McNair will motivate a number of players on the Titan's roster this year?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:18 PM)

No. I think what should motivate them is their weekly pay check. There are 11 players on this team who played with Steve, and they got used to him not being in the huddle a long time ago.

allen (houston)

so travis johnson was traded, i have 2 questions.why would san diego want this guy, andwas he the best DT the texans hadThanks

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:19 PM)

He wasn't good, but it's not like they are deep at the spot. San Diego is a 3-4, so at least they will be seeing what he looks like playing a different position. He's an end for them I believe.

Scott (Nashville, TN)

Thoughts on Cleo Lemon - just an experiment? All word out of camp has been that Ramsey is a pro, etc... is this also a post-week 1 look?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:20 PM)

They had receivers in today. He's a guy who can throw to receivers when the other QBs are readying for a game. They update an in-case-of-emergency file on him at the same time.

tygr20 (Twitter/Louisville)

Strictly numbers here; Andre Johnson will finish the season with 1500 yards, 17 TDs. Agree, or disagree?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:21 PM)

From eight to 17 TDs. That's a big jump. Too big for me to agree. But I think he will be huge.

Ed (Arkansas)

Based on your answer to the Ramsey question, do you think the Titans will be looking to draft a QB next year or are they wanting to develop Ramsey to take over for Kerry after next year.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:22 PM)

I expect them to draft of find a young guy to pick up or deal for.

Brandon (Jackson, TN)

If the Colts decide to go with 2 qbs and keep Painter for the practice squad do you think he will remain on the practice squard? Or do you think he has shown enough talent this preseason for some one to get him off the waiver wire?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:23 PM)

I think they can say hey, we like you but don't feel we can keep you on the roster. We'll cut you and intend to sign you to the practice squad. If someone comes calling with a spot on their 53, will you give us a chance to add you here before jumping? He could feel loyalty to them. But the suitor may be offering better opportunity and security.

Justin (Jacksonville)

Paul, thanks for running the blog. What are your thoughts on the safeties for the Jags? Any ideas on who the potential starters will be?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:24 PM)

It'll be Nelson and Considine, but I think Nelson's stock has slipped and if someone behind him shows good he could lose the job this season.

Bob (Ft. Lauderdale)

Paul, Is the Jared Cook the real deal? Or is he another Ben Troupe?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:24 PM)

Better than Troupe. I need to see how he reacts to getting creamed. but he looks very good.

khal (houston)

will Cushing make enough of an impact to make the defense better? And will Slaton come to form by Week 1?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:26 PM)

Yes on both. Cushing will make a difference, but he won't singlehandedly transform the defense, so guys better not be standing around waiting for him to.Slaton should be fine. I wouldn't worry about RB production in the preseason for a team that's proven it can run.

Harish (Fargo ND)

Paul,Houston didnt seem worthy of all that offseason expectations of winning the division and making the playoffs from what i have seen in the pre-season. Whats your take?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:27 PM)

Not if you judge them on preseason game performance. But did you judge the Lions last year on theirs? If so, big mistake, because 4-0 led to 0-16.

Bill Polian (My office)

Hey Paul, I am enjoying how many top analysts are picking the Colts to have a down year. We never finish well when the analysts like us and I really believe we have the best all-around team we have ever fielded since my time in Indy. So please, jump on the bandwagon and start dishing on us. I will only help us over the course of the season.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:28 PM)

I am thrilled to have you with us, Bill.Sorry to disappoint, but I think you have a strong team and will be in the playoffs. How you let left tackle deteriorate, however, is a big and fair question.

Casey (Murfreesboro)

I'm a life long Steeler's fan so I don't have a dog in this hunt, but do you think that people are expecting more from Nate Washington than he is able to deliver? He was our #3 WR and they made no effort to resign him. He drops a lot of balls.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:30 PM)

Has to drop less, of course. But that's where you go to upgrade in free agency -- you find a role player you think can do more in your system and give him a bigger role. The guy can run and was dynamic in practices I watched. Certainly more so than any of the Titans other wide receivers.Tennessee made no effort to resign Haynesworth, but that didn't mean they didn't like him. Steelers had Sweed ready to step in. It doesn't mean they hated Nate.

Shane (Los Angeles, CA)

Not to stray away from the AFC South, but regarding Marshall, if the Broncos give him a new contract or trade him away, do you think McDaniels will ever be in control of that team?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:30 PM)

No matter what they do I am not sure he ever will be.

Harish (Fargo, ND)

Paul,Whats your analysis on Anthony gonzalez? I have been reading that he hasnt quite lived up to the second WR billing? Maybe they should have picked nicks instead of brown?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:30 PM)

I think he'll be just fine, and very productive.

Casey (Lake Mary FL)

Will Brown take over the Colts starting RB job by the end of the year? If they spent a 1st round pick on the guy they must plan on using him a lot, right?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:32 PM)

Don't make too much of starting. If they are splitting up the work is it that important who gets introduced?I think if Addai stays healthy he'll get 65 percent of the work and Brown most of the rest.

Eric (Houston, TX)

Which two positions do you think really need addressing on the Texans roster?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:32 PM)

Defensive tackle and safety.

Guy (Round Rock, TX)

What is up with the Texans? Schaub gets hurt - again. Defense looks like swiss cheese - again. I'm not seeing all these "improvements" I keep reading about. Your thoughts on the Texans D?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:32 PM)

Not good. But they will start the season 0-0.

Dan (Philadelphia)

With a slimmer LenDale, what will his role be? Will CJ get a fair share of goal line carries?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:33 PM)

It will look almost exactly like last year. Why mess with success. For fantasy owners?

Bill Brasky (Nashville)

Anybody you'll specifically be watching tonight in the Packers-Titans glorified try-outs?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:33 PM)

Mark Jones. Who I am completely unimpressed with.

Ed Hochuli (Chat Ref)

*under the hood reviewing PK's use of the term "user error"*

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:34 PM)

To clarify, I am the user.

Todd (LaVergne,TN)

Why wouldnt Matt Jones be in the mix for punt kick returns?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:35 PM)

Because he's never done it?http://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/J/JoneMa00.htm

Collin (TN)

Any chance the Titans keep Edison over Hawkins if it comes down to that? What about keeping Cary Williams versus keeping McCourty?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:36 PM)

McCourty is significantly better than Williams.I think they keep both, but Edison is better and more reliable than Hawkins right now. Does Hawkins get the same two years Paul Williams did?

Jl (Hoboken, NJ)

Quick question - what's the logic behind the trim down to 75 players before the final 53 player roster? Seems like not much is accomplished by cutting 4-5 players - wouldn't it be easier to take care of everything in one fell swoop?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:37 PM)

Yeah, the first cut should be bigger, but what it amounts to is a chance to rid yourself of the temptation to use the lowest ranking guys in the final game and get the hurt and be stuck with them.

Tyler (Indiana)

T.J. Rushing - Underrated or just better than anything the Colts have?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:37 PM)

B

STEVE HEINDL (LAKEPORT, CA)

Do the Cowboys have a chance to win the Super Bowl w/o a legit #1 receiver?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:38 PM)

They don't have a chance because of their owner and his coach, not because of their receivers.

Bruce Springsteen (via mobile)

Man, even The Boss can't get a question posted. My question is, do you really like Zima as your friend Tim says?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:38 PM)

He's projecting his stuff onto me.

Macho Man Randy Savage (Paul's Attic)

OHHHHHH yeeeaahhh!! Who would win in a fight, me or Chuck Cecil?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:39 PM)

Well since you did pretend for a living and he did real, I'll go with him. Though he's not a fighter anymore.

JB (TX)

Where is Ryan Mouton health-wise?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:39 PM)

They are not sharing. I'll be surprised if he plays in the opener.

Charles (Goodlettsville)

I'm all for placing a value on a guy and not going over it, but is it reasonable that the Titans placed too low of a value on a top returner/back up CB in Chris Carr. A 2 year/$5M deal looks pretty reasonable for a team that is still $12M under the cap.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:40 PM)

Baltimore told him he could be their nickel. That job wasn't open in Tennessee. That was the big difference.

Josh (Charlotte, NC)

Paul, you posted a question with no answer:Christopher (Memphis, TN)Do you think the death of Steve McNair will motivate a number of players on the Titan's roster this year?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:41 PM)

I wrote an answer? Is Graham messing with my stuff? Using wizardry?I said something like: No. They should be motivated by their paychecks.Eleven guys on this team played with him, and they got used to him not being in the huddle a long time ago.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:42 PM)

If I don't answer your question -- about Painter say, or Cleo Lemon -- feel free to scroll and see if we already covered it.

Vinny (Nashville)

Do you see the Titans making effort to trade for Roscoe Parrish?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:43 PM)

Doubt it. Don't think they want to give away picks already being without a second. Love Roscoe though. Don't know how the Bills wouldn't have room for him.

Ed Hochuli (TN)

Penalty on Tennessee for cutting a receiver for a DUI and promptly flirting with a cocaine-user and plea-deal-violator. Penalty results in a 10-year extension of the Titans curse at WR. (Ed sends his condolences to Nate Washington and Kenny Britt.)

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:44 PM)

Valid, but the flirtation has to turn into a hookup for this to have real legs.

Destro (Nashville)

What hope do we have that even if the Titans make the playoffs, they won't implode like they did in the last playoff game. How do we avoid making bonehead turnovers?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:44 PM)

Start by avoiding Baltimore.

Amobi Okoye (Houston)

A lot of people around here think I'm a bust, it looks like Shaun (don't call me Dan) Cody could start infront of me. What do I have to do to prove people wrong? Or can I?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:44 PM)

Start playing better, man!

mark (lafayette la)

Chargers fan here - yes, travis johnson will play end in the 3-4. My question is, what were his shortcomings in Texas? Was it primarily his attitude or his ability? You think he can be effective with a change of scenery?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:45 PM)

I think he's earned a reputation as a bit of a dog.

John Clayton (mobile)

The Titans haven't put much pressure on the opposing QB's in the preseason. In fact, they haven't been really even near the QB very often. Is this due to a lack of game planning (stunts, blitzes) or lack of talent. Vanden Bosch acts tough during practice hurting our own players but has been invisible against other teams.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:45 PM)

It's preseason!

Bill (San Diego)

Paul, does Tiquan Underwood offer any upside for the jags if he makes the team?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:47 PM)

Any rookie making a team has upside, otherwise why would he be making the team?Jack: "I think we should keep Underwood, he has a real chance at regressing and we don't have enough of that."Gene: "Great idea!"

Jason (Nashville)

With 2 years under Heimerdingers system, do you see the Titans as more of an offensive threat?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:47 PM)

Yes. With that plus Washington, Britt and Cook.

Darrell (Nashville)

Why don't the Titans try Vince out at WR?........ KIDDINGAssuming LenDale and CJ both live up to expectations this season, what would you say the chances are we resign Lendale?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:48 PM)

Slim, like as if those chances gave up tequila.

Ed Hochuli (Chat Ref)

15 yards to Todd for asking why a 6'6" receiver isn't in the running to return kicks.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:48 PM)

This is why you are the best in the biz.

John (Culver City, CA)

Since the Jags are having trouble selling out games, do you think we are going to start hearing rumors about them possibly moving??

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:48 PM)

Who's in the market to buy a football team in this economic climate?

Paul (Cleveland)

Do you realize Tim Graham is the only ESPN NFL blogger with a Wikipedia page?

Jim Rome (ESPN Headquarters)

Paulie! Love the blog bro. I read your article on Jeff Fisher lacking a superbowl ring to become an all time great coach. I've gotta say, I disagree man. I'm burning!

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:50 PM)

I linked to someone else's article Chief, so it's not "my" article.

Nate (MD)

A certain someone rumor-mongered a fisticuffs in a film session between the former star turned backup QB and the head coach and/or offensive coordinator in Tennessee last week. What's the real story? Is there a story?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:51 PM)

None.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:53 PM)

I was looking for the question about Graham and his Wikipedia page, to which I'd say this:I heard he stayed up real late one night to make that happen. Or cast a spell on someone to do it for him. This is not all user error. I am not refresing and some stuff seems to be posting itself.

KENNY (KNOXVILLE)

IS THIS TITANS TALK OR AFC SOUTH TALK?? ENOUGH WITH TENNESSEE ALREADY, how about the Jaguars........MJD 20 TDs and 1200 rush yds this season????

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:54 PM)

Four question marks does not make a question. But I presume you are asking if he will hit those numbers.I think he won't quite reach those.

Ulises (San Antonio, TX)

What's the word on D. Robinson, what's the soonest you think he'll be on the field helping those Texans?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:57 PM)

I have not heard anything. If I learn something about his situation or anything biog like that, you can trust it will be on the blog very quickly.

DC (TN)

What's your five year career plan? Are you gunning for an "Insider" writing gig?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:59 PM)

I'd like to be a chef at a five star restaurant.Or a shepherd.

Gamblor (Los Angeles)

What's the deal with Joseph Addai?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:59 PM)

Looks healthy, running better.

Willy (Detroit)

Will the lions win at least 1 game?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:00 PM)

Absolutely.

Awayne (INDY)

When you get a chance to watch a football game that you don't have to write about do you still find yourself looking for a story or can you still just watch and enjoy?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:01 PM)

I can watch and enjoy. I can also flip to Shawshank Redemption and forget to flip back.

Gamblor (Los Angeles)

What are your thoughts on Marcedes Lewis?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:03 PM)

If you look at the guy you can't help but think he's got to be a good player. And he's an underrated blocker. But they need him to catch the ball more consistently.Dirk Koetter told me during OTAs that Lewis is better on throws where he sees the ball the whole way than the ones where he has to turn and find it.I expect they will try to get him in those favorable situations.

Big Time (Studville)

Will Reggie Wayne fill the #1 receiver void the colts need since harrison is gone?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:03 PM)

Well he did for much of the last two seasons, so I'm going to go out on a limb and say yes.

John (Tempe, AZ)

Percy Harvin..overrated or will he live up to all the hype?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:03 PM)

A

CC (Atlanta)

Will Vince Young get cut this weekend?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:03 PM)

No.

CC (Atlanta)

Best restaurant in Nashville -- Rotier's?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:04 PM)

Thanks for making me crave onion rings and a chocolate milkshake.

Ron Burgundy (Newsroom)

I'm still hurt over your lack of affinity for my life story. I'm in a glass case of emotion.

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:05 PM)

Try breaking it with your elbow. If you get out, change characters and try to make another funny movie, like Old School.

Andy Dufresne (Zihuatanejo )

You gonna be watchin me and Red this weekend? You know what I always say "Get busy living, or get busy dying."

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:06 PM)

Is there actually a Shawshank Redemption channel?

Ben (Nashville)

If Chris Brown stays healthy do you see him playing a big role in the Texans running game?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:06 PM)

Yes. Could get 30 or 35 percent of the work. Could be worthy of 40, but push it and you get him hurt.

Adam (Tennessee)

Peter King prognosticates the AFC South in this order:1. Texans2. Colts3. Titans4. JagsI'll buy Colts over TItans. With a healthy Manning, they will always be in the mix. But, Texans on top? I don't see it. How about you?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:07 PM)

I don't see it either.

Big Time (Studville)

Will Jamarcus Russell figure out why he was the number one pick and start to play better?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:07 PM)

Doubt it.

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:08 PM)

Well folks, I think we've done all we can do.Sorry for the glitches.Talk to you next week from Pittsburgh!
