Chat with Dan Rafael

Dan Rafael
  (12:00 PM)

Greetings Fight Freaks. It's Labor Day weekend, so we have very little boxing this weekend, but there are still a lot of great fights on the horizon and a big new notebook is up as well as news stories and blogs this week. Let us discuss. Let's get to it.

tj (toronto)

love having pbf back on 24/7...the good guy vs bad guy angle is back!.. marquez comes off as a very likeable character

Dan Rafael
  (12:01 PM)

Floyd loves to play the bad guy and he's awfully good at it isn't he?

Besim (Staten Island, New York)

I read somewhere else that Mosley-Clottey is confirmed for Dec. 26th. Your latest?

Dan Rafael
  (12:02 PM)

You can read whatever you want but it is not confirmed. I know I haven't written that it was done yet and I go by my sources not what I read or hear about elsewhere.

Paul B (NY, NY)

Happy friday, kng freak. Notebook inmsightful as always. I am a big fan of the Holt-Maidana concept. With Maidana coming all night, that one could be very entertaining. How do yousee that one?

Dan Rafael
  (12:03 PM)

Maidana-Holt is a pretty interesting fight. They both have the power to knock each other out. Holt is probably quicker and has better skills. But Holt also fights a little more scared sometimes. If he boxes smart and picks his spots to mix it up he can definitely win. I'd like to see that fight. The great thing about 140 is that there are number of good matches you can make because it's such a deep division.

Daniel (SF)

Fightnews is reporting Mosley-Clottey as if it's a done deal. Your notebook made it sound as if they were just working on it. Still working on it, or is it set?

Dan Rafael
  (12:04 PM)

Like I said, it ain't done, it ain't official and that's the truth.

chris (austin)

if diaz and paulie rematch in new york, do you think there will be a bias? why would diaz again to a rematch in paulies hometown?

Dan Rafael
  (12:05 PM)

I think as long as there are truly neutral officials it can be a fair fight anywhere. But after what happened in the first fight, I think it's a big money-maker in New York. If Diaz and his team don't want to come to NYC, I think it would be a great fight for Atlantic City.

Peter (Philly)

Five minutes into Episode I of 24/7 and Uncle Roger unleashes another prophetic phrase "I know how fighters is. They love that lamp light".

Dan Rafael
  (12:05 PM)

I'm glad you understood it. I need subtitles for Roger. I am not even kidding.

Tomas (Texas)

The proposed Marcos Maidana vs Kendall Holt fight makes me all tingly inside!

Dan Rafael
  (12:06 PM)

You might want to have that checked out.

Grey (Cape Cod, MA)

How dumb is Zab for pulling out of his fight with Diaz? Way to miss out on a payday and some PPV exposure, Zab.

Dan Rafael
  (12:06 PM)

Zab is not the smartest kid in class. I am trying to be nice.

Jamesa (Ottawa)

Hey dannomite, just got a new job! Old one let me go for something called "too much internet usuage". But hey, I am still here!!!

Dan Rafael
  (12:07 PM)

Good man.

Brock (Belleville)

I bring up this question every couple weeks or so, does Sakio Bika get a big fight soon? He seems to get no breaks.

Dan Rafael
  (12:08 PM)

You're right -- he gets no breaks. The Balzsay fight went down the tubes. Not sure what he will do next.

BJ (LA)

I guess that spectacular undercard that Arum promised is out of the window.

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 PM)

Yeah, it's looking pretty bad right now. I do believe Bob went into it with the best of intentions. But right now, as it stands, it does not cut it as a top undercard. If it stands as Montiel-Morel, Santos-Foreman and Soto Karass-Gomez, that is very, very disappointing.

Chris ((Columbus, OH))

Super ticked about Zab Judah pulling out of the Mayweather-Marquez ubercard. Have you heard any reasons?

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 PM)

Golden Boy said it was money.

Bry (SF)

How bout Guerrero-Soto on Nov.14?

Dan Rafael
  (12:11 PM)

Would love it, but highly unlikely.

Bert (Minneapolis)

D$- Freddy Roach can't get a hold of Pacquaio? Is Pac Man taking the fight lightly(if so he's crazy) or just caught up in the celebrity he has (if so he's foolish)?

Dan Rafael
  (12:11 PM)

If there wasn't some dysfunction with Manny he wouldn't be Manny. He's supposed to be here in the US for the press tour next week. I suspect all the issues will be resolved then and camp will get under way in a serious manner.

Tom (Sacramento)

Dan, when adn where is Joan Guzman fighting. I guess not on the Nov 28th card huh?

Dan Rafael
  (12:13 PM)

He has nothing scheduled. There was some discussion about him against Funeka for a vacant 135 belt on Showtime's Dec. 5 undercard but it probably won't happen because of the budget for that show. Guzman-Funeka could happen elsewhere but right now there is nothing remotely set for him.

Paul B (NY, NY)

Kindly rank them as far as deepest divisions: jr welter, welter, jr middle, and super middle.

Dan Rafael
  (12:14 PM)

Super middle, junior welter, welter, junior middle.

Spike (Toronto)

Montiel-Morel is just like Foreman-Santos, a boxer vs counterpuncher and it has boring written all over it.

Jesus (Puerto Rico)

Better figth JML vs Gamboa or JML vs Caballero?

Dan Rafael
  (12:15 PM)

Both fights are good fights. Personally speaking, I would prefer to watch JML vs. Gamboa. I think it's a more action-packed fight. That said, if they made a Caballero fight, that's cool too.

Scott (Cleveland)

So how about Pavlik-Williams? Anything yet?

Dan Rafael
  (12:15 PM)

Perhaps you should check out today's notebook. Banishment, are you hungry?

Brock (Belleville)

With Richard Schaefer's comments about Shane not fighting on Dec 5th, do you think that Pavlik-Williams gets done?

Dan Rafael
  (12:16 PM)

I do think it gets done unless Pavlik has a legitimate medical issue.

Greg (Los Angeles)

I wouldnt mind seeing Bika-Miranda. I know Miranda stock has sunk but it would still be a very entertaining fight.

Dan Rafael
  (12:16 PM)

I agree.

Brian (Sacramento, CA)

Dan,After seeing the 118-110 scorecard for Diaz, what other bad decision come to mind? De La Hoya over Sturn?

Dan Rafael
  (12:17 PM)

DLH-Sturm wasn't even close to being that bad. I think of fights like Whitaker-Chavez or Lewis-Holyfield 1. Of more recent vintage I think of fights like Casamayor-Santa Cruz or DHop-Steve Forbes.

David (Cape Canaveral, Fl.)

Rumor is Ruiz faces Meehan on Haye-Valuev, undercard, Is that true?

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

Ruiz is supposed to be on the undercard. I spoke with his attorney the other day and at that time there was no set opponent.

Derek (Virginia)

Dan, why shane mosley having a hard time getting a big fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:20 PM)

There are four mega guys at 147 -- Shane, Mayweather, Cotto and Manny. So happens Cotto and Manny are fighting each other and Floyd, off a two-year layoff, is fighting Marquez. Left Mosley the guy without a chair in musical chairs.

ron (muZak)

Is the James Toney fight on the 12th going to be shown on Showtime, or if not available anywhere?

Dan Rafael
  (12:20 PM)

It will not be on Showtime. Dan Goossen, the promoter, told me he was trying to get it shown on the Internet in some fashion but I have not heard anything more of that.

Greg (Los Angeles)

Dan whats the deal with Steve Cunningham? Did King just allow him to leave or is there going to be a legal battle?

Dan Rafael
  (12:22 PM)

From what I am told, Cunningham informed DK that he was in breach of his promotional contract and left him. Whether King sues or not, I have no idea. But considering Cunningham's inactivity over the past few years I tend to believe Cunningham's side that DK breached their deal.

nick (long island)

Jirov is coming back, does he have any chance at regaining a title?

Dan Rafael
  (12:22 PM)

As a cruiserweight I think it just might be possible. If he goes back to heavyweight, he has zero chance.

Fred (CA)

Since Holyfield got robbed in his WBA title shot vs Valuev, shouldn't he get a title shot over Ruiz?

Dan Rafael
  (12:22 PM)

Let's not even go there. Ruiz is the mandatory. Let's leave it at that.

Mike (NJ)

Dan, For you DVD pick of the week I suggest you watch Lewis/Holyfield I again and score it again. I know I'm in the minority but I don't think it was that much of a blow out. Go ahead and score it again.

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

Nobody said it was a blowout but Lennox Lewis CLEARLY won the fight.

Fred (CA)

How many fighters have sued Don King?

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

I can't count that high.

Besim (Staten Island, New York)

Dan, have you ever met Arthur Curry before he passed? The good guys at HBO, namely Jim, Larry, and Emmanuel, did a wonderful job in showing respect to someone who we lost too soon.

Dan Rafael
  (12:25 PM)

Of course. Artie was a friend of mine. I spent many a road trip hanging out with Artie. He was a great guy and he is missed. I wrote a blog about him and what he meant to all of us after his untimely death a few months ago.

Bernardo (Florida)

Da, Why doesn't Torres get any attention? After all, he did knock down Cotto and defended three times. His loss of the title was controversial (he was clearly head butt-knocked before the opportune punch of Holt to knock him out). Wouldn't that be a good rematch for Holt still?

Dan Rafael
  (12:26 PM)

Torres fought not too long ago in his home country. He is no longer at junior welterweight and he doesn't fight very often. Out of sight, out of mind.

Rudy (Chicago)

Dan, after watching 24/7 do you think Marquez has a chance?

Dan Rafael
  (12:27 PM)

Watching 24/7 has zero to do with my opinion on who will win the fight.

Il Principe (New York, New York)

Has there been any talk of bringing any of the wildly popular Japanese fighters, such as Komeda, to the U.S., or at least showcasing them here?

Dan Rafael
  (12:28 PM)

No because they don't mean anything here, especially in the small weight classes they fight in. You generally fish where the fish are. Kameda commands like 40 million watching him on TV in Japan. If he came here, he'd register a tiny fraction of that. There is no point, especially with no obvious big fight for him on this side of the Pacific.

nick (long island)

maidana vs holt sounds llike a real barn burner, i have holt rallying and winning by early mid rounds ko in a fight where they both toucht he canvas. how about you?

Dan Rafael
  (12:28 PM)

I can definitely see both guys getting knocked down in that one.

Ed (Lubbock, TX)

Dan what do you think about Randall Bailey vs. Joshua Clottley?

Dan Rafael
  (12:29 PM)

Clottey would walk through him.

Erik (New York City, Queens)

Is David Haye also out of sight out of mind?

Dan Rafael
  (12:29 PM)

Who?

Al (BN)

Any chance we can get Holyfield-Ruiz IV?

Dan Rafael
  (12:29 PM)

Banishment, where are you when I need you?

Besim (Staten Island, New York)

Dan, I looked up your blog... it was written on Thursday, April 9, 2009. Good man.

Metty (T.O.)

Why the hell does The Ring still rate Margarito at welterweight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:31 PM)

I have no idea. I believe they are wrong for doing so. He is not eligible to fight, at least in the United States, and obviously will go at least a year without fighting. He should not be rated because of his punishment for cheating, not to mention his inactivity and getting the crap beaten out of him in his most recent fight, which was nine months ago. He should be dropped.

Don (Buffalo)

Dan - loved Urango's performance last weekend. Is there a possibility a unification fight vs the winner of Bradley / Peterson happens in early 2010?

Dan Rafael
  (12:32 PM)

It was a terrific fight and all credit for Urango for showing the heart he did to survive that knockdown. Urango fits with anyone at 140, be it in a unification fight or a top contender. If he is matched with opponents who fight and don't move too much, he can be in a series of great fights.

Al (BN)

Holyfield and Ruiz went 1-1-1. They should fight to solve it once and for all and to determine the WBA No 1. Ranking. That would make sense, no?

Dan Rafael
  (12:32 PM)

You're banned.

James (Texas)

Think Hatton vs. Diaz will happen?

Dan Rafael
  (12:33 PM)

I think there's a pretty good chance. It's the biggest fight right now for both guys unless a Hatton, for example, wanted to fight Diaz.

Banishment (Home Bored)

AL come to Pappa!

Brian (DC)

The fans went 0-3 in the Hoyfield Ruiz trilogy.

Aaron (PA)

Dan, with everyone talking about Mosley-Clottey, Berto twittered a day or so ago that his people were talking with Shane. Any chance that we see that fight made, or is it more of a fallback in case Mosley-Clottey isn't made?

Dan Rafael
  (12:35 PM)

That fight has always been out there and the sides have talked. It's always been a money thing. They say they need more to make it, HBO has budget constraints and made a good offer but not enough to satisfy Mosley and Berto. Whatever happens, I do know that the Clottey side is going over a contract it has received for the Mosley fight.

Chris (Columbus, OH)

Butt-whipping of the Year:A.)Mosley over MargaritoB.)Pacquiao over Hatton

Dan Rafael
  (12:36 PM)

Both impressive. I would say Mosley over Margarito because it was a sustained beating over a long fight in which Margarito was punished over the long haul. Pacquiao simply blew out Hatton with a few punches in less than two rounds.

randy (nyc)

Gamboa/Juanma would be highly entertaining, but I don't see anyone beating Juanma anytime soon

Patrick (Mexico)

I think the 108-pounders get undersold when it comes to deep divisions--Soto, Sosa, Solis, Viloria, Calderón, maybe Mayol is a player, lots of good fighters.

Dan Rafael
  (12:37 PM)

I agree. In this country, however, those fights are of interest to us Freaks, but that's about it.

Patrick (Mexico)

By AL's logic we should see another Iran-Iraq war just because the first was indecisively concluded.

Chris (Staten Island)

Really impressive win for Cloud last week but I also thought it was a great fight through the first 8-10 rounds. Woods got a lot of good shots in on Cloud but almost every round Cloud seemed to pull it out on Woods's good rounds.

Dan Rafael
  (12:38 PM)

You're right. Cloud was a bit wild and needs to get that under control, but he rocked Woods repeatedly. Cloud is an interesting fighter but he has a lot of work to do. But he is entertaining.

Metty (T.O.)

Butt-whipping of the year was definitely Roger Mayweather over that female fighter.

Chris (Vancouver)

That Holyfield vs Ruiz is an awesome idea! Settle the score once and for all. We could through Billy Dib against TBA and Yuri Foreman vs TBA as the undercard.

Dan Rafael
  (12:39 PM)

A sick, sick Freak! Let's not even joke about such cards.

Chris (Nashville)

Butt-whipping of the year was the Judges over Paulie.

Chris (Staten Island)

Hey Dan, what do you know about Tomas Rojas who will maybe fight Vic Darch on Dec 5? Just a guy for Vic to beat up before getting more fights against the top guys?

Dan Rafael
  (12:41 PM)

I recently watched Rojas's last fight, when he won an interim belt to become Vic's mandatory. He's got a pleasing style, but he's not too fast. If Vic can get over the whupping he took from Agbeko, Rojas is made to order for him.

Tony (Houston, TX)

Who actually believed Bob Arum when he said he was going to put on a great undercard? He always says that and never does it.

Gary Burton (Beaverton, OR)

Dan, why does Ring Magazine rank Israel Vazquez and Rafael Marquez #5 and #6 on their pound for pound list, yet not rank them in any single division?

Dan Rafael
  (12:42 PM)

Ask them. This is ESPN, not Ring.

Carlos (NY,NY)

Just because a person wants to see a 4th fight between Ruiz-Holyfield he gets banned? Different Strokes for different folks

Dan Rafael
  (12:43 PM)

No, not really. Banishment. It's like saying just because one person like to commit murder it's ok, different strokes for different folks. NOBODY can want to see a fourth Holy-Ruiz fight. Period!!!!!

Besim (Staten Island, New York)

Floyd Mayweather Jr. on skates during the first 24/7 was hilarious.

Grey (Cape Cod, MA)

Hey Dan, do you know anything about Marvin Sonsona, who is fighting Carita Lopez for a belt tonight? Is he worth getting excited about? (please tell me he's going to be second coming of Pac or something)

Dan Rafael
  (12:44 PM)

His adviser, Sampson Lewkowicz, who is the person that brought Manny to the US and was very, very, very high on him before most people had ever heard of him, told me he feels the same way about Sonsona. We shall see.

Chris Metler (Toronto)

Holyfield-Ruiz IV? Why not subject us to Byrd-Williamson II while you are at it!

Mark (Santa Monica, CA )

Is injury or HBO causing Wlad to not fight again 2009? I read an article with Wlad stating he was ready to go in December against either Chambers/Povetkin. If it's just HBO budget preventing him from fighting in December, I'd be pretty disappointed in Klitschko. Don't you think he should just stay more active and fight on ESPN Classic again if need be? Thanks Dan.

Dan Rafael
  (12:45 PM)

Klitschko is out until next year because of a shoulder surgery he had about 7 weeks ago.

Mike (Jamiaca, NY)

hey, Dan what does someone have to do to get their questio posted on here, Mention Hollyfield and Ruiz?

Dan Rafael
  (12:45 PM)

Apparently.

Jason (San Antonio TX)

DTM$,Happy Friday King Freak. I recently heard from a friend who cover boxing for a local newpaper that you and Doug Fischer have beef? Any truth to this?

Dan Rafael
  (12:46 PM)

LOL! Your friend is an idiot. Dougie and I are totally cool. He's the man.

Different Strokes (Different Folks)

I'd like to see Briggs-Liakhovich II.

Berndawg (CHI)

Any news on a possible bigger fight for Antonio Escalante--seems like he's ready.

Dan Rafael
  (12:47 PM)

Nothing specific. But he has looked good in his recent fights, he drew a nice crowd in his last fight and I think he's deserving of some kind of title bout at 122.

Sean (NJ)

Are Manny's camps always this crazy (ie Freddie can't get in touch etc)? I wasn't aware that "Manny being Manny" can also be used for Pacman...thought that was simply Ramirez

Dan Rafael
  (12:48 PM)

It is Manny being Manny.

James (Texas)

Any Victor Ortiz news?

Dan Rafael
  (12:48 PM)

Healing from wrist surgery and probably out the rest of the year.

Chris (Atlanta to Boston)

Paid $10 for inflight internet access just to get on the chat. Freakish? I would love to see Marquez beat Money and feel he could do it. I also felt the same way about Hatton. Am I delusional again?

Dan Rafael
  (12:49 PM)

Very Freakish, but impressive. As for your delusions, well...

Koichi (NYC)

Maybe Shaq will want to try his hand at pro boxing since he "fought" Oscar DLH on Shaq Vs. He can fight Valuev, it'd be the most horrible, boring fight between two giants.

Dan Rafael
  (12:50 PM)

Just a reminder -- Shaq vs. Oscar is on this coming week. I think it's Tuesday night on ABC.

chrisdiggidy (oklahoma city)

While freestyle (rapping) with a friend of mine, I said "knocked out like Karoly Balzay" in a rhyme off the top of my head. Freak status?

Dan Rafael
  (12:51 PM)

More pathetic than freakish.

James (Texas)

Local card in San Antonio to raise funds for Oscar Diaz. Juan Diaz will be there to sign autographs. Think he (J. Diaz) signs my fight poster vs. JMM?

Dan Rafael
  (12:51 PM)

Sure. It's for a good cause.

Chris (Vancouver)

Off topic, but what is the FOTY in the WWE so far in your opinion?

Dan Rafael
  (12:52 PM)

Obviously, Undertaker-Shawn Michaels from WrestleMania. Hands down.

Jason (NYC)

Will George Foreman ever go back to HBO Broadcasting? He was great.

Dan Rafael
  (12:53 PM)

I have no idea.

William Menijvar (Vermilion)

Hey Dan, Is Cotto tryining in Puerto Rico, or the U.S, and who is his head trainer now?

Dan Rafael
  (12:54 PM)

Cotto plans to train again in Tampa with his same team he had for the Clottey fight. Head trainer is Joe Santiago.

James (Texas)

Better active stable.. Top Rank or Golden Boy? Matchmaking?

Dan Rafael
  (12:54 PM)

At the moment, it's Top Rank.

Pete (Fairmount, PA)

Dan, is James Kirkland still in jail?

Dan Rafael
  (12:55 PM)

Yes and he's staying for awhile.

Mike (Jamiaca, NY)

24/7 Roger Mayweather is worth the price of admission. It is like putting a rubix cube together in my head to understand what he is saying

King (NYC)

Will the Dec.26 card have a co-feature?

Dan Rafael
  (12:56 PM)

What Dec. 26 card?

Benvenuto (Miami)

Are you a Marco Huck fan???????

Dan Rafael
  (12:58 PM)

I've seen a lot of his fights and he's a very entertaining fighter. Good style, good chin, good power. Comes to fight. His fight last week to win a belt was excellent. He's had several exciting fights.

Horn (Vegas)

On WWE Raw, Floyd was referred to as the quarter billion dollar man. I have not laughed that hard since the Don King bathtub story.

Dan Rafael
  (12:58 PM)

If Floyd has a $250,000,000 I am a trillionaire.

bill (carmel, ny)

any idea how the ratings were for the FNF show last week? i'm wondering if it would be better for ESPN to have a show every other week choosing quality over quantity.

Dan Rafael
  (1:00 PM)

I am told they were right around what they usually are. But you can't expect a big bump for one show. You need to create a track record over time of those kinds of shows, not to mention Aug. 28 in the summer isn't a great date and the show got no promotion on air.

Brandon (Arlington, VA)

Super Dan - I'm excited to hear that Lamont Peterson is working out with PBF. That can only help him as he prepares for Bradley. If anyone out there is listening... Bring the fight to DC!

Dan Rafael
  (1:01 PM)

The Bradley-Peterson fight won't be in DC, but if Peterson wins Top Rank says they will try to come to DC with a title defense. I know this city would love a big fight. It's been a long time since we've had one.

Besim (Staten Island, New York)

How did Richard Schaefer, a Swiss banker, find his way over to the top of Golden Boy?

Dan Rafael
  (1:03 PM)

He had met Oscar through his wife, who is a family member of one of Oscar's best friends. They were talking and Oscar needed help with his business affairs. They clicked and Oscar asked him to work with him and the rest is history.

Nick (Harrisburg, PA)

I loved Leonard Ellerbe's quote in 24/7 about how floyd owes the IRS $6 million..."We don't pay attention to that..." Haha obviously not, otherwise u would have paid ur taxes on time like everyone else.

Dan Rafael
  (1:04 PM)

Leonard can say what he wants. Floyd owes the IRS. Period. If they would just admit it, it would be over. The constant lying is what drives people crazy.

David (Cape Canaveral, Fl.)

dan ya' hear about the guy that junped ship and was picked up by the disney ship you were on? Rumor is he jumped to avoid watching a Valuev-Ruiz replay.

Dan Rafael
  (1:05 PM)

Yes, I saw that yesterday when my wife showed me. I emailed the story to my father and he wrote back that we missed all the fun! That was literally the same ship I was on.

Alberto (Arizona)

is there a possibility that Angulo and Cintron meet again?

Dan Rafael
  (1:08 PM)

You never know down the road but right now I would very much doubt it. What network would buy it anyway?

Andrew (Akron, OH)

Hey Dan! Just curious, but why does James Toney hate you? You consider him an all-time great right? I hope he gets a HW Title shot soon.

Dan Rafael
  (1:09 PM)

Didn't know he did. And I don't hate James anyway.

Greg P (Staten Island, NY)

Dan, just read your Agbeko article...WOW could we see Donaire vs King Kong for the title in 2010?

Dan Rafael
  (1:10 PM)

It would be a terrific fight but both guys have things to attend to before that would happen.

Gerardo Avitia (Chicago, IL)

Dan. Was there a possibility of Judah fighting Mosley in December?

Dan Rafael
  (1:10 PM)

It was briefly discussed but it's not happening.

Dan Rafael
  (1:11 PM)

Hey, James from Boston -- give it a freakin rest already my man.

Ronny (San Diego)

Kieran Mulvaney nailed it - PBF is the living, breathing definition of insecurity issues.

Dan Rafael
  (1:12 PM)

Ya think?

Don (Miami)

Dan is Zsolt Erdei ever going to fight a real opponent?

Dan Rafael
  (1:12 PM)

Probably not as long as he can help it.

Rui (Nutley, NJ)

Are there any plans to showcase Saul Alvarez on US television anytime soon?

Dan Rafael
  (1:13 PM)

Not now. He has a nice deal with Televisa in Mexico and is packing fans in. He's a very exciting young fighter. I would hope eventually he'll come to the US for some more exposure.

Greg (Los Angeles)

Dan who do you see winning the Santos-Foreman?

Dan Rafael
  (1:13 PM)

Yaawwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwn.

Craig (Philly)

James from Boston....what a knob.

Besim (Staten Island, New York)

What's the deal with James from Boston?

Dan Rafael
  (1:14 PM)

He's banned for sending in the same question about 200 times and just killing this thing.

JQ (NM)

Crazy how just reading yawn, especially for that kind of question, can really make you yawn.

Joel Julio (Colombia)

Hi Dad! I'm all healed up...when can I go back to fighting?

Dan Rafael
  (1:17 PM)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child. Your co-promoter, Tuto Zabala Jr., told me you may return on his October 16 Telemundo card.

brian (scottsdale, az)

Have you seen the movie "orthodox stance". I have it coming from netflix soon. wondered your opinion of it.

Dan Rafael
  (1:19 PM)

Yes, I went to see it with my wife at a screening. The director was there to speak and answer questions from the audience after the film was shown. It was very well done.

Joel (Orlando,Fl)

Dan, I love the way Sugar Shane and Cotto fight the real welterweights at 147. You think Mayweather will ever have the guts to follow in their footsteps?

Dan Rafael
  (1:20 PM)

So far he hasn't.

James (Texas)

James From Texas (not Boston) please don't confuse me for that idiot.. Thanks

Dan Rafael
  (1:20 PM)

You got it.

Denis (Miami)

Why is no network interested in a Spinks / Cintron fight?????

Dan Rafael
  (1:21 PM)

Why would they be? It's a wc fight.

Dan Rafael
  (1:22 PM)

I really like him. He has an exciting style, a good amateur background and the crowd really seemed behind him. He could become a draw in Texas. I want to see a lot more of him.

SK (LA)

For a guy that wants a big fight and TV exposure, Valero has certainly gone about building his reputation in a strange way...is it possible he drops out of Winky's school and opens his own management program?

Dan Rafael
  (1:24 PM)

LOL! Very possible I think.

Nick (South Dakota)

wc?

Dan Rafael
  (1:24 PM)

Who cares.

Bernardo (FL)

Joel Julio. I still believe he is a prospect. He was rushed, but still young.

Dan Rafael
  (1:25 PM)

Trying to get on my good side are you? Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child.

Jeff (OH)

DTM, I am a new freak-in-waiting - I watched PBF's Greatest Hits on HBO on Demand and it inspired me to look up PBF's fight with JL Castillo..curious how you scored that fight the first time?

Dan Rafael
  (1:25 PM)

I had the first fight a draw.

John (San Fran)

Maybe he has worked out a payment plan (i.e. he makes $15mil against Marquez and pays off all his tax debts), thus they really don't worry about it.

Dan Rafael
  (1:26 PM)

$15 million? Where did you get that fantasy?

Christopher (Linz, Austria)

Dan, do you also think Huck deserved the decision? It was a close fight, but I think he deserved it. I ask because in German newspapers they said Ramirez should have deserved the win.

Dan Rafael
  (1:28 PM)

Huck definitely deserved it.

Ram (Elizabeth, NJ)

Dan is the Pacquiao-Cotto press conference in YAnkee stadium open to the public?

Dan Rafael
  (1:29 PM)

Yes, it is.

BIGJUN (Bethlehem, PA)

Dan, did you happen to watch the TYSON doc movie? I loved it wanted to know what you thought if you did? Thanks.

Dan Rafael
  (1:31 PM)

I went to see it in the theater and now have the DVD. It was very well done and I liked it. I have a few quibbles with it. One glaring thing to me was the placement of the footage from the Lewis-Tyson press conference brawl being in the complete wrong time frame. But overall, it was very good. If you are at all interested in Tyson, it is a must-see movie.

joe (cherryhill)

do u know who is on the undercard of johnson dawson 2

Dan Rafael
  (1:32 PM)

The TV undercard fight is Angulo vs. Yorgey. Not sure yet on the rest.

Richie (CA)

DTM, do you think PBF is in for a rude awakening in terms of how much of a draw he really is on Sept. 19th? I'm guessing 600k buys.

Dan Rafael
  (1:33 PM)

I think you're number is a very reasonable prediction.

Mark (Chicago)

Floyd got $20 mil for one night in the WWE and you don't think he will make $15mil against JMM??!?!?!? (sarcasm)

Derek (Edmonton, Alberta)

wasn't Floyd supposed to be a billionaire by the end of 2009?

Dan Rafael
  (1:33 PM)

Supposed to be. How'd that work out?

Gerardo (AZ)

Hey Dan every Thursday night you should automatically post a column titled "Yes, James Kirkland Still In Jail". MAYBE then you will stop getting the same damn question every Friday morning...

Dan Rafael
  (1:34 PM)

Good idea.

Carlos (NY,NY)

Dan, Zab Judah said on his UStream that you were the reporter who Tyson was talking to after the melee at the Tyson-Lewis press conference. Any Truth to this?

Dan Rafael
  (1:35 PM)

I was at the press conference. I was near the stage. But Mike was not yelling at me.

James (Texas)

Any new to report on BHop?

Dan Rafael
  (1:35 PM)

Nope.

Harold (Clothier, WV)

If them Mayweathers got so damn much money, shouldn't one of em' buy Roger some teeth?

Billy (KY)

Do you think Mayweather will go back into retirement if he gets beat on the 19th??

Dan Rafael
  (1:36 PM)

I'll let you know on the 20th.

Greg (Los Angeles)

Dan how upset was big Lou after the Diaz-Paulie fight? He looked calmer than I thought he would be after the decision was announced.

Dan Rafael
  (1:38 PM)

He was upset. I spoke to him the next morning. But I think he was calmer than normal because what happened was pretty much what a lot of people expected.

Joe (San Diego)

You only post anti-floyd opinions...both yours and the freaks.

Dan Rafael
  (1:38 PM)

Not true. I don't get many positive Floyd comments, if any.

R! (Oakland)

What is Marquez's purse for the Mayweather fight? Career pay day?

Dan Rafael
  (1:39 PM)

I believe his guarantee is $3.2 million.

Charles (Philly)

Is it too early to ask whether you think Yorgey has a prayer against Angulo?

Dan Rafael
  (1:39 PM)

I think he has a very legit chance.

Jeff (Phoenix)

Tell Joe in LA it's hard to have a psoitive opinion about a guy who works as hard as he does to portray himself as a complete ass!

Sean (NJ)

what's to be positive about Floyd anyway? he's beating the guys he's supposed to beat, and he hasn't fought the guys who can beat him.

Banishment (Cinders of Hell)

Hey Pete...come on down. The rule was no more Kirkland questions...and I a, damn near starving over here.

Mike (Chicago)

Is the Mayweather fight even close to selling out?

Dan Rafael
  (1:41 PM)

Not at the moment.

BG (Palm Beach)

I positively believe that Floyd has a superiority complex. I positively believe that he is unbeaten because he has not fought the top opposition in his weight class. He is a great fighter. The best one at avoiding real opposition. Positive enough?

Dan Rafael
  (1:41 PM)

As far as I understand it, he doesn't have one. He makes based on how profitable the event is. If it does really well, he'll make a ton. If it doesn't, he won't.

BJ (Houston, TX)

Did you see any of Omar Henry on the Soto Karass undercard last weekend? He looks legit and has TR and Dunkin behind him.

Dan Rafael
  (1:43 PM)

I did see it. It was a sensational performance. The knockout reminded me a bit of the end of the first Corrales-Castillo fight. That kid has me a little excited.

Gerardo (AZ)

In My Opinion, Floyd Mayweather Jr. will look very good laying on the canvas in his fight against Marquez.Does that count as a positive opinion?

Nick (LA)

Daniel, what was the fight that made you a boxing fan?

Dan Rafael
  (1:43 PM)

Nobody calls me Daniel except my mother and my late grandmother.

Brandon (Tucson)

Do you think Marquez talking about winning with his speed is the wrong approach? It seems like a really stupid idea to to to out-fast one of the games fastest fighters. Recipe for disaster?

Dan Rafael
  (1:44 PM)

He can talk that way but I am not sure if he is being truthful. If Marquez wins, it's not going to be on speed. It's going to be on being relentless, punching and pressure.

James (Texas)

Got two email from MGM grand on deals for hotel stay, fight tickets and hotel credits for the JMM vs Mayweather...fight not sold out.

Patrick (Mexico)

Floyd is a total pain the a** and delusional about his ability and his willingness to take tough challenges, but I have something positive: there aren't many fighters who are more consistently in tip-top shape? Even for the bums (i.e., far too many of his opponents), he comes with the a-game.

Dan Rafael
  (1:45 PM)

You're right. Floyd is a gym rat and always in fantastic shape.

Eddie (NJ)

Me and my friend made fake press passes, took the train into NYC just to try and get into MSG for a Cotto press conference, reserved for members of the media. Freak Status?

Dan Rafael
  (1:46 PM)

Thanks for letting me know. I have reported you to Top Rank and MSG. The cops will be waiting for you.

Q (Waterbury,CT)

Well the first Floyd positive comment, I love the guy and i fully expect him to fight the top welters!!

Kyle (Indianapolis)

Gotta love Floyds work with children! Im sure hes been feeding the homeless for the last 2 years when the cameras weren't following him.

Jarrod (IN)

Great to see FNF go out with a bang, but where was Tessitore and BK. You don't realize how good of a job they do until they're not there.

Dan Rafael
  (1:48 PM)

Joe Tess was on assignment for the Travers horse race as he is also ESPN's horses anchor. BK was on a long-planned vacation.

Joe (San Diego)

Eddie from jersey....thats criminal status

Erik (New York City, Queens)

Dan, whats your opinion on Juan Manuel Marquez catch wieght of 144? This may be too heavy in my opinion

Dan Rafael
  (1:49 PM)

That is one of the keys to the fight to many. People generally view Marquez as a great fighter but in the smaller 126-135 divisions.

Michael (Long Beach, CA)

Loved JML's comment about sparring with Gamboa being not too friendly. Would loved to have seen that.

Dan Rafael
  (1:50 PM)

Me too. Wish I had the tape.

bill (carmel, ny)

when did they finally announce the catch weight for mayweather/marquez? that was a mystery for a long time.

Dan Rafael
  (1:52 PM)

They have never formally announced it. I have reported it since Day 1 from sources directly involved in the fight. The HBO producers also got it from sources, which is why it was mentioned on last week's 24/7. There is no mystery. The max weight is 144.

Christopher (Chicago)

Time for my question yet...: Dan, have you heard how Cris Arreola is conditioning? Will he be ready for Vitali and how will he fare? Is he the real-deal, will he be the Americans' future heavyweight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:53 PM)

I have no idea. I have not seen Cris in months. His team says he's ready. Don't they all say that?

cdiddy2310 (stillwater,ok)

Do you think of ever doing an only WWE chat?

Dan Rafael
  (1:54 PM)

That would be cool.

Chris (Vancouver)

That catch weight mystery with FJM and JMM is a joke. Does Golden Boy really think thats a selling point? The way Shaefer and DLH were saying," Its going to be the most anticipated weigh in ever!" seems like they actually think thats a selling point to the fight. Seems like amateur promoting to me.

Dan Rafael
  (1:55 PM)

When they said that I didn't take it seriously. For whatever reason, Mayweather didn't want it mentioned and Golden Boy did it his way.

Will (Columbia)

floyd shouldn't destroy the reputation of boxing by going on a crap show like WWE

Dan Rafael
  (1:56 PM)

That so-called "crap" WWE Monday night show draws like 5 million viewers a week, more people than watch probably six or seven episodes of Friday Night Fights combined.

jason (maple shade)

when do tickets go on sale for dawson vs jonson fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:57 PM)

I emailed Gary Shaw during this chat to ask him and he wrote back he would let me know when he knows.

David (Las Vegas, NV)

Do you know who Showtime will use in place of Nick Charles for the next 3 ShoBox telecasts?

Dan Rafael
  (1:58 PM)

For the time being, while Nick is taking care of his medical issues, Al Bernstein will fill in on some upcoming ShoBox cards. And we will all root for Nick to get back to ringside as quickly as possible.

razzah (uk - gateshead)

any news on khan salita?

Dan Rafael
  (1:59 PM)

I actually traded emails with Salita in the past half hour. He says the fight is being planned for Dec. 5, although not 100 percent yet, and that as part of the deal with the WBA, he agreed to fight Maidana next within 90 aays if he beats Khan.

Josh (Alexandria, VA)

Yeah, and Ali definitely shouldn't have sullied boxing by showing up at Wrestlemania I! *groan*

Dan Rafael
  (1:59 PM)

And Tyson at a WrestleMania as well.

Dan Rafael
  (2:01 PM)

Only Pacquiao will appear at that one. Sept. 15 at PETCO Park in conjuction with the Padres-DBacks game.

Q (Waterbury,CT)

Hey Dan, are there any plans or anything for you to give live interviews on any of the ESPN channels?

Dan Rafael
  (2:02 PM)

I will be on SportsCenter and maybe ESPNews on Sept. 10 regarding the Cotto-Pacquiao press conference.

Pete (Salt Lake City)

Hey dan, can't believe we got no fights to watch this weekend. What will you be watching this depressing boxing-less weekend?

Dan Rafael
  (2:03 PM)

I'll make due with a million DVDs I have recevied recently.

Chima (Ut)

I know its been called off but do you think PW could of hung with pavlik at 160?

Dan Rafael
  (2:03 PM)

The fight is probably going to be moved to Dec. 5.

Pete (Salt Lake City)

Floyd fight is in two weeks, do you know when the will announce what cities it will be shown in theaters? Do you think Salt Lake will be on the list.

Dan Rafael
  (2:04 PM)

They announced it. If you look in my chat transcrip from either last week or the week before there is a Web site address a Freak sent me that has a list of all the outlets that will carry the fight in theaters.

BG (Palm Beach)

Enjoy this weekend off. Some great Fights coming your way!

Matt ((NYC))

Dan, have you ever thought about doing a 30 minute boxing segment on ESPN on a weekly basis? I know you're a writer by trade, but I would think that there would be demand for a boxing forcused show...

Dan Rafael
  (2:04 PM)

I would love it. Easier said than done.

Gerardo (AZ)

Hey Dan, do you know if ESPN.com has (or has had) any plans into expanding the boxing site to include fighters' profiles, etc., like they do with every other sport?

Dan Rafael
  (2:05 PM)

It is being explored.

Dominic (San Francisco)

Dan! Had to say I absolutely LOVED that you responded to your happy birthday email from the WBA with "How about as a gift to me you abolish all the interim titles and super titles for the good of boxing?" and comparing the WBC's first time free rule to the corner drug dealer was great!

Dan Rafael
  (2:06 PM)

Thank you. I got a lot of comments on those two items.

Will (Columbia)

when will eddie chambers fight wladimir klitscko

Dan Rafael
  (2:07 PM)

Probably around spring next year.

Gerardo (AZ)

list of theatres for Marquez Mayweather fight:http://www.ncm.com/FathomContent/PDF/Participating Theatres_MVM_0829009.pdf

Greg (NJ)

Have you ever met PBF. How different was he vs. how he comes off on 24/7? How much of 24/7 is an act to play the "bad guy"? How much of his charitable work on 24/7 last week an act?

Dan Rafael
  (2:09 PM)

I have been with Floyd many, many times. He can be very, very charming and friendly and likes to joke around. He does do charitable work and likes kids. He may go to clubs and throw money around but he has also been known to drive down the street and hand out money to homeless folks. Like all of us, he has his good qualities and bad. When he's promoting a fight, he does seem to like to show off his nastier side though for the good of business.

chrisdiggidy (oklahoma city)

Dan, does it seem crazy that Rigandeaux will be fighting in a 10 round fight already? I know he has amateur experience, but those aren't anywhere near 10 round fight regardless of how much experience you have

Dan Rafael
  (2:11 PM)

He can handle it I suspect. He's maybe the greatest amateur of all time. Two Olympic golds, countless big tournament experience, 400 or so amateur fights. And he's 28 (so he says).

Besim (Staten Island, New York)

Butt whipping of the year: Roger Mayweather vs. the English Language

Peter (Philly)

Could you see the Diaz-Malignaggi rematch on the undercard of a BHop-Adamek fight in Newark or is that main event just a pipe dream?

Dan Rafael
  (2:13 PM)

Pipe dream. And it must be a good smoke. That fight will generate its own substantial money. Way too big for an undercard.

Joel (Eastchester, NY)

Dan, very excited about the tripleheaders from Shobox, any chance Anthony Dirrell ever steps up to fight real competition?

Dan Rafael
  (2:14 PM)

Unfortunately, I heard this morning that Dirrell is going to be sidelined from that tripleheader because of some sort of injury.

Benvenuto (Miami)

Bigger crook.....Jose Sulaiman or Bernie Maddoff?????

Dan Rafael
  (2:15 PM)

Flip a coin -- if one of them doesn't steal it first.

yis1 (TO)

whats the beef between Roger Mayweather and Angelo Dundee

Dan Rafael
  (2:18 PM)

I have no idea. Every time I hear Roger speak on a conference call or at a news conference, he rips Angelo for no reason. Roger is just a disresctful dude. Ripping a wonderful 88-year-old icon for no reason? Roger has zero class.

Richard (Kendall Park, NJ)

...If only the sanctioning bodies invested with Maddoff....we might have been rid of them!

Dan Rafael
  (2:18 PM)

Excellent point.

Dan Rafael
  (2:21 PM)

Thanks for the chat Freaks. Hope you all have a great Labor Day weekend. Talk to you next week. Peace.
