Hello folks. Hope everyone had a great Labor Day weekend. Off to Richmond this weekend to set the Chase field. And how about that Force-Pedregon family feud? That sure sparked things up in the NHRA heading to the Countdown.
what are the rules if vickers and kenseth finish in a tie for 12
Kenseth gets the spot because he has two victories this season and Brian has one. If Brian winsat Richmond, it comes down to 2nd-place finishes (I think). And so forth.
TB, great race on Sunday! the crowd was awesome and there was quality passing all over the place
It was nice to see. The Labor Day weekend date is working for Atlanta. But I don't know if the March date is safe for 2011.
Nascar needs to do something with these start and park teams. Regan Smith runs the whole race but doesnt get in cause of qualifying and that to me doesnt seem right. I think all teams should have to comit to running the whole race. Whats your thoughts?
It's difficult to police, but each team should have a full pit crew and enough tires to run the whole event or not be eligible to qualify.
did goodyear have anything to say after the race, was it the cars, the fact that it was first time at night at atlanta, the tires, or a combination of all three?
Don't know what Goodyear said, but racing at night definitely helped. It added grip on the cooler pavement.
terry, i told you kahne would win, write down denny hamlin for this week thanks.
OK Mooky. If you're right, we're heading to Vegas.
Does Rowdy Busch need to win at Richmond to get in?
Not neccesarily. It depends on what the other bubble guys do. But it's possible he could win the race and not get in.
Do you think this is Jeff Gordon's last real run at a championship...and does he have enough car to get it done this year?
No and yes. I think Jeff could compete for several more championships before he's done, and he does have and car and team capable of winning the title this year. It's just a matter of who gets hot down the stretch.
How do you think the Ford Mustang and Dodge Challenger will fair next year with their entry in to NASCAR? Of the 2, which will have a more successful rookie season?
I think you're placing a little too much stock "no pun intended" in the body model. They look great, but the differences are very small. It really comes down to who has the best teams. Right now, Edwards is the one Cupper who plans to run the entire 2010 NW sked, so I'd say Ford has the advantage.
Do you forsee a shakeup and RCR, especially with no Harvick, Burton or Bowyer in the Chase?
No driver shakeup, but they already had big chnages last week in the competition dept. Burton will have a new CC in 2010 because Scott Miller has become the comp. director.
What's it going to take for old Ed Hinton to admit that Jr is running much better lately? He was junk early but worked on it and ended up running in the top 10 most of the night, with a good amount of top 5 time. that being said, what was up with those last 10 laps? he disappeared...quickly
My man Easy Ed will give Jr. is due. Heck, Ed was changing Junior's diapers when Ed and Sr. weren't duking it out.
Ed Hinton is reporting Danica to NASCAR for 2010. Do you foresee any other drivers switching series, either way?
No. Danica is a special situation that sponsors will line up to be a part of.
It was great to see Robby Gordon beat Dale at Atlanta. Has Robby Gordon Racing finally turned the corner to more consistent top 20 finishes?
What do you make of Tony and Jimmie's troubles entering the chase?
It dosn't help them if they enter the Chase on a mini-slump. I know both teams want to run well at Richmond to start the Chase on a high note. But they also have been trying some things the last couple of weeks they probably wouldn't have tried if their playoff spots weren't secure.
With the move in recent years for younger and younger drivers finding their way into good rides in the Cup series, who are the next generation of drivers on the rise? Taking away of course Logano since he is already in Cup and Keselowski? What do you see as the future for guys like Erik Darnell and Brad Coleman?
It really depends on who can gets sponsorship backing. But it's fairly clear Justin Allgaier hasa bright future. Colin Brain also has talent and appears on his way up. I really like Brad Coleman. We're both Houston boys and I know his family. He's a great young man who only needs seat time to make it to the Cup level.
what's the state of the truck series? Are they still going strong or are they barely hanging on?
Probably somewhere in between going strong and barely hanging on, but the Trucks will run in 2010.
Have you ever seen Jeff Gordon drinking Coca Cola?
That's not really something I tend to notice, but he's probably smart enough not to do that.
Did you see Kenseth push Kyle right out of the way when they were fighting for position? Maybe Matt isn't as vanilla as everyone likes to think.
No doubt Matt will battle hard when a spot is on the line. He's quiet off the track, but one tough cookie on the track.
Do you think Sam Hornish will return to open wheel, even though he has made significant progress this season?
I wouldn't call 27th in the standings significant progress, but I think he's staying in Cup.
Will Penske be moving Parker Kligerman up to Nationwide in 2010?
Not sure, but I know they love Parker. The Penske brass see Parker as the next Joey Logano. But they don't want to rush him.
Are there any noticeable tweaks coming to the Cup car in 2010?
Not noticeable, but they probably will have some minor changes like weight distribution adjustments.
Granted it's more of a figurehead position, but what are your thoughts on Richard Petty's "team" making the Chase for the first time?
It's fantastic. Everyone wants to see The King have a driver compete for a championship. It's good for NASCAR.
The picture for your article doesn't have JPM in it. This guy just runs solid every single week...even his "bad" weeks he manages a top 20. I really think he can make some noise and maybe even put away the conservative driving and go for a win late in the chase if he's in position. Any love for my analysis?
You should read the column. JPM is mentioned quite prominently as the guy who could win the title without winning a race.
What did you think of the Force-Pedregon family feud yesterday?
I wrote about this in my column today. I think Tony owes his career to John. And I think the NHRA should expect questionable runs when multi-car teams have a playoff spot on the line.
Do you know anyone who doesn't like Mark Martin? I can't imagine anyone being that upset if he won the champsionship this year.
A Martin championship would be one of the best things ever to happen in NASCAR. And it would transcend the sport as a man who won a major championship past the half-century mark.
so is kyle going to make it or not?go William and Mary!
It isn't easy to make up 37 points and two spots, but he's very good at this track. I think he'll get there.
What tracks do you think Danica will drive in either in the truck series or the nationwide series in 2010.
The easy way to guess if look at races in big markets that don't conflict with the IRL schedule. I'm sure her team will pick short track to help with the learning curve and throw ina few 1.5-mile ovals. I know every speedway promoter will beg to have her run his NW race.
With all these great young drivers like Coleman, Kligerman, Darnell, Algaeir ready to race in Sprint Cup how all these old drivers like Martin, Labonte, Burton, Elliott, Schrader, Kenseth seem to hang around forever?
Kenseth isn't exactly ancient. But some of these guys hang on based of what they did in the past. And owners know they won't tear up equipment.
Who of the remaining contenders winning the championship would be the biggest story (ex. Martin finally wins at 50, Kahne wins for the King, Stewart first owner-driver since '92, etc.)?
Martin, hands down.
When will Henrick get fed up and lose patience with Dale's poor performance and put another driver in the #88?
Not for a very long time. Earnhardt is a huge money maker, win or lose.
What do you think of this year's rookies? I think Joey Logano at times holds back-like he's taken the Smoke course in learning THEN conquering. How well do you think this year's rookies will race next year and will any make the chase?
The only rookies are Logano and Speed. Joey will have a shot at making the Chase next year. Speed just hopes to keep his ride for next year.
I drove the 71 to an 18 place finish last week. Think someone will hire me for next year?
Yes fake Bobby. Someone will hire you to get that past champ's provisional.
With Stert owning a team, race tracks and now having Danica as a driver, when do you expect Stert to stop driving and become an Everham?
Not for a long time. Stewart is one of the best driver in the sport. He has no intention of quitting any time soon.
With Keselowski signing with Penske they said he would also compete in the full Nationwide schedule. Do you know who he will be driving for?
Penske in both series.
With Matt Kenseth having to overcome such difficulties in Atlanta, what do you think of his chances to actually make it into the Chase are?
His chances are good becasue Matt is the best at getting the most out of his equipment and making the most of a bad situation. No one is better at making at 20th-place car finish 10th.
How many races in will Danica take someone out. How many will it take for her to be taken out (on the track)?
DP may be small, but she won't be intimidated and she won't let people push her around. She'll mix it up with the best of them.
Do you think Nascar needs to have a "multiple race winner provisional" so they can name Kyle Busch to the chase based on his 4 cup wins even if he doesn't make it on points?
They need to award more points for winning and adopt and win-you're-in formula as long as that driver finishes the regular season ranked in the top 20.
In your answer about Kenseth that "no one is better at making a 20th place car finish 10th." Why is that?
Because he's patient, smart and knows when to pick his spots. He doesn't take crazy chances and he takes advantage of the mistakes other drivers make.
Stewart said he will only add a 3rd car if the money is right? Can Danica bring that kind of sponsorship money into Nascar? What new sponsors might come in with Danica?
Stewart said it's too late for a third team in 2010. Yes, DP can bring that kind of money, but she wisely has decided to take her time and learn stock cars at the lower level.
so with that theory the David Reutimann, whos only win was rain shortened, should be in the chase? that doesnt sound like a good idea.
I'm fine with that. If it means a lucky winner get a Chase spot, so be it. I'd rather see that than see Kyle and Mark Martin get left out. And think of the drama if would add this weekend. The point is to place more emphasis on winning. Pro sports competition is about winning, not about finishing eighth every week.
what football game are you gonna watch Sunday? what a great weekend for sports
I agree, but I'll be on a plane Sunday, flying home from Richmond. Uh oh, I just jinxed it. Now it will rain Saturday.
Someone should get Carl Edwards one of those back-flipping toy monkeys so he can place it on his roof as a stand in next time he wins. Seriously, how do you think his foot will affect him?
I love that idea. I do think the injury hurts him over a long race. I've had a broken foot, and just driving my car to the grocery store was painful.
Who does better next year - Brad K or Joey Logano?
Great question, but I'll go with Joey. Nothing like a full year's experience to improve things.
Would you limit the number of drivers in the Chase with your "win and in top 20 scenario"? That'd be potentially awesome if you had guys like Bowyer, Ambrose, Burton and Mears all just needing to win this week to get in!
No limit. If you had 26 different winners in the 26 regular season races, the more the merrier. But six of those guys wouldn't make it because they wouldn't rank in the top 20.
Terry - At which remaining track would Ryan Newman have the best chance at winning?
I'll guess Texas.
Who do you see outside the "Dirty Dozen" having the best last 10 races?
Maybe Earnhardt. Maybe Logano. Definitely Vickers if he doesn't make it.
I know that Kenseth doesn't get a lot of love from fans for being too "vanilla" but do other drivers think of him?
Kenseth has as much respect in the garage as anyone.
What do you expect of Kyle if he misses the chase?
A very angry young man going all out for victories.
Why does Nascar go head to head with the NFL? I think the chase is going to be great this year, but so will the NFL seasoon
You'd have to cut a lot or races not to go head-to-head with the NFL.
What drivers have made every single Chase?
Only Kenseth and JJ.
Gotta go folks. Good chat today. Richmond should be a blast Have a great week. Peace.
