What's good? Jacked up for another MMA Live chat. I continue to be amazed at how much news breaks in this sport in just one week's time. Plenty to discuss, so let's vent.
Is Rampage-Rashad officially postponed? If so Dana can not be happy about scheduling a show in Memphis and then having a huge main event invovling Rampage be called off cause he wants to play Mr. T, pretty ridiculous imo
Yes, Fred. The Rampage-Rashad fight has been postponed. I wouldn't be shocked to see the UFC re-locate the UFC 107 card and put another show in Memphis to feature Rampage. I think we're all bummed out the fight won't happen as scheduled, but it's a pretty legitimate mainstream opportunity for Rampage and, by default, the UFC. Tough call.
Who do you like in Maynard Huerta next wednesday? Also, assuming maynard gets the W, who does he fight while Diego Sanchez takes the title shot he deserves?
I like Maynard in the fight, but I don't expect it to be easy. I know Roger Huerta would like nothing more than to get a huge win in his final contracted UFC fight. As for Maynard's next fight, let's get through Huerta first.
citrus cooler gatorade rocks...wish it was still around
Hahaha. For those that haven't been keeping up with our discussion on Twitter, I have finally found Citrus Cooler Gatorade in New England. They are calling it 'Championship Gold'. Good stuff, Matt.
What do you think of the matchup between Jones and Hamill if it happens at the TUF10 finale?
Really intrigued by the fight. A very appropriate test for both guys, given where they are in their respective careers.
Hope you're doing well Jon.My question was regarding Hector "Shango" Lombard. When might we have the chance to see the Cuban native in the Octagon? He was a beast throughout Bellator, ending the Jared Hess match with a doctor stoppage?!...I would love to throw him at Anderson Silva and see what happens. With Hector's amazing take-down defense and his ease in taking down his opponents, I can see him taking the belt.Where would you place his success in the UFC?
Hey Rafael. I'm glad you're on the Hector Lombard train. He is certainly a Top 10 middleweight in my mind. Hasn't lost since a PRIDE defeat to Gegard Mousasi back in 2006. Bellator has Lombard's rights, and I don't expect him to crossover into the Octagon anytime soon. He and Eddie Alvarez are Bellator's prize possessions. As for Lombard's place in the UFC's middleweight division, I think he can compete with anyone.
I saw Shaq box The Golden Boy last night - will he step into the Octagon?
Thought that was great TV last night. If Shaq wants to have an MMA fight after his NBA days, you can be sure the Octagon door will be open. My expectation is that, at some point, you will see the Diesel in an MMA setting, even if it's just an exhibition.
I've been on vacation for the past week, what breaking news in the MMA world are you referring to??
Just a ton of news and fight announcements- Rampage-Rashad postponed, Gina Carano gettin' a big movie role as well, Penn-Sanchez for UFC 107, Davis-Saunders, Hamill-Jones. And don't forget former boxing champion Ricardo Mayorga crossing over into MMA. I wonder if he'll enter the cage smoking a butt.
With the Swick/Kampmann fight off, who gets the next shot at GSP? No clear cut contenders at the moment
I still think it's Kampmann's title shot to lose, especially if he gets through Daley convincingly.
What is up Jon??? Is the timing for Mousasi's injury keeping him out of the Super Hulk tournament a blessing in disguise? You would think with the potential he has, he wouldn't want to risk anything by being involved in the circus sideshow.
Precisely. I think Gegard's focus should be fighting the best 205ers in the world. No more exhibitions, etc.
Why was the Kampmann-Swick fight called off?
Swick is injured. Says he'll be healthy by UFC 104, but still a huge blow to that 103 card.
I agree its a huge blow having to delay the Ramage/Rashad fight but what do you think of The Spider having surgery making him unable to fight and essentially forcing the Henderson/Marquardt fight?
There are still some conflicting reports on Anderson Silva and whether or not he will require surgery. One of several stories we are chasing today as we get ready for tomorrow's show.
And speaking of tomorrow's MMA Live, don't forget: Kimbo Slice live in studio! Send your questions for Kimbo to firstname.lastname@example.org
Did Couture finally retire for real this time? boy he looked terrible last PPV
On the contrary, he signed what amounts to a six-fight extension. And while he certainly showed his signature toughness against Nogueira, I'm sort of on your side, Tim. I think he has slowed down quite a bit, despite being in phenomenal shape.
Hi Jon, It seems to me that Jardine has now been appointed the unwated status of "gatekeeper". What's next for him? Also, why is Bonner still employed with the UFC after several back to back losses?
I really want to see a fight between Jardine and Bonnar. Winner stays in the UFC.
Kimbo Slice Jon Anik = Big Ratings!!!
Certainly the Kimbo Slice part...
...and the curse spreads to Kimbo Slice...
Ha! No curse, Zed. C'mon dude.
Has kflo been able to jump out of a pool yet?
Yes he did, with ease.
Gross tweeted that Soares told Iole that Anderson hasn't had surgery and could fight in November.
Yup. Thanks, man.
On Kenny's twitter he said that the 'hard training' begins. Does Kenflo officially have a fight?
Nothing is confirmed, but all signs point to a fight with Clay Guida at UFC 106. Kenny trains hard year-round, though, regardless of whether or not a fight is imminent.
Do you think Couture is washed up?
I think he will have a very difficult time against some of the younger guys going forward, especially at 205. I know its blasphemy to doubt or challenge a legend. Just think eventually the age (46) is a factor.
Isn't the obvious fight Anderson Silva vs Rashaud Evans at UFC 107?
I'd love to see it, Marc. But given all the bad blood between Rashad and Rampage (Rashad told me they nearly get into it on every episode of TUF) and given how marketable both guys are, the UFC needs to make sure that fight happens.
Comin to you ffrom Spain today Johnny Boy! Honest thought on rampage ditching rashad for the A-Team. i know its a cool opportunity but c'mon, the dude is ducking fighters like crazy now and still talking trash. I say move on with the other lhw
Glad to have you from Spain, Steve! Because the UFC built the entire TUF 10 season around the match-up, I would've liked to have seen the fight happen in December. But it's tough, b/c, as you all know, Rampage is perfect to play B.A. Baracus, and I see it as a great crossover opportunity for 'Page and the UFC. I just think you gotta draw the line somewhere. If this becomes a trend, it could be very problematic.
is kimbo even good?
Depending on who you ask, he's overrated or underrated. He's certainly a powerful guy with good hands. The question is- how far has he come in other aspects of MMA? We will find out soon enough. Curious to ask him tomorrow what went wrong with Bas Rutten (why did Bas jump ship and stop training him)?
Do you think the UFC will attempt to counter-program the Strikeforce event?
Well, if the Strikeforce card is Oct. 10th (my expectation), there is already a WEC card that night. Not sure the UFC wants to dent the WEC viewership on Versus by airing an old card on Spike.
When and with Who is Fedor fighting next?
He is fighting for Strikeforce against undefeated 6'5" 265-lb. Brett Rogers. Date and venue still TBD, but it very well could be 10/10 at the Pru in Newark, NJ.
I'd be more interested to see how Kimbo explains his loss at EliteXC. Before that point I thought the only thing on Kimbo that wasn't suspect was his chin.
Certainly one of the 45 questions I already have. Hopefully, he'll be part of the entire show and we'll really get to pepper him. :)
Jon Jones v. Matt Hamill as the TUF 10 Finale main Event. Thoughts?
Sign me up, as stated earlier in the chat. Good to have you back in here, Ken.
Bones Jones on TUF finale for free!?! Hell yeah!!
You know it. Was cool watching his brothers on Saturday (both play football for Syracuse).
Will MMA Live be on location if the Strikeforce event is in Newark?
They certainly aren't giving us much time to make arrangements! I'd imagine we will have some kind of presence. Stay tuned.
Will Tito Ortiz ever be a legit title contender again?
I think so, absolutely. I still think he's got plenty left in the tank and, given his name recognition and PPV drawing power, you can be sure he'll be given every opportunity to get back to the top.
Dont you think it would be worth it to the UFC to dent the WEC (not a strong card in terms of numbers for them anyway) if it meant also hurting SF?
Good question. Perhaps, Brian. I certainly wouldn't put it past them.
Does Huerta retire from MMA after this fight, or does he maybe just leave the UFC and head over to Strikeforce?
...or Bellator! I think Huerta will eventually return to the cage after trying his hand at acting for awhile. The money in acting will be good, and he doesn't get punched in the face. But fighting is definitely in his heart.
Do you think Fedor will regret his decision not to join the UFC when he and Brett Rogers are in a empty Prudential Center with no television audience because the only people who know when he is fighting are on this chat?
Haha. The East Coast (New Jersey especially) is jonesing for a major MMA card. But I really wonder how big a crowd Strikeforce will get with just a few weeks to get the word out. As for Fedor's regrets, I'm done trying to figure out what drives that guy. But, if it is his legacy, he should've signed with the UFC.
What's next for Torres? Has he got a fight lined up? Rematch with Bowles?
I'd like to see Miguel get an immediate rematch. If any champion in any promotion deserves an immediate rematch for a title, it's Torres.
ESPN: Get MMA Live on TV!
p4p, who's the strongest person is the ufc? (not best, just pure brute god-given strength)
Hard not to go with a heavyweight here. Brock Lesnar. Outside that division, perhaps Thiago Alves.
Typically the year end UFC card is huge. Have you heard any rumors for UFC 108? Who would be available to fight around that time?
Nothing concrete, but I'd imagine Georges St. Pierre will headline the card.
Frank Mir does commentary for WEC - are other fighter doing the same elsewhere?
Kenny Florian fills in for Mir on occasion and will be with Mike Goldberg for the Fight Night next Wednesday. A lot of fighters and former fighters work as analysts- Frank Shamrock and Pat Miletich with Strikeforce, Guy Mezger with DREAM., and Jason Chambers is my partner for Bellator.
Speaking of commentary, Kenflo does an excellent job. Is that something he's eyeing after his octagon days are over? (Hopefully not any time soon)
Absolutely. He's a natural on set.
Would you say GSP is the UFC's biggest star right now? He doesn't even have a fight scheduled and every chat is filled with questions about him!
I think there are still bigger names (Couture, Liddell, Ortiz, etc.). But I think St. Pierre is right there and he will serve as the face of the UFC when Couture and Liddell are gone. Some would argue, Isaac, that he is already reached that level. I think he may, when all is said and done, go down as the best P4P mixed martial artist of all-time.
I think Brock is a bigger star because he's polarizing.
Can't believe I didn't include Lesnar. No fighter is more must-see TV than Brock.
Would Pat Miletich and Matt Hughes be game to fight each other? That would make for an interesting fight for both at this stage in their career.
Good question. I'll have to ask Pat about that. You have to think, if Miletich returns to the UFC, that Hughes is one of the guys Joe Silva would like to see him fight.
How bad would it be for Strikeforce if Fedor were to lose to Grim?
Well, better for him to lose to a highly-ranked undefeated prospect than a guy like Fabricio Werdum. As I've said previously, I think Emelianenko is a nice piece for Strikeforce, but certainly not the be-all and end-all of its success.
Hey Jon, predictions for Fight Night and if Belfort wins convincingly over Franklin, would that muddle the middleweight title picture further? Given that Hendo and Nate arew in line for a shot too?
We will have a chat the day of the Fight Night next week, so I'll hold off on the predictions until then. I'll give you two right now- Nate Diaz and Tim Credeur. Also very curious to see how Jake Ellenberger fares against Carlos Condit. Ellenberger's last fight was with Bellator- a ridiculous first-round KO. He's got a lot of skill and experience.
If (big if) Carwin beats Lesnar, do you think Brock would get an immediate rematch? Or would someone like Mir get the next shot?
Generally speaking, the UFC is not in the business of granting immediate rematches to its champions. I think someone else would get that first shot at Carwin, and Brock would need to win a fight or two to get back.
How can GSP be the best P4P fighter of all time when he stays at his own weight class, does not take on bigger challengers. Most P4P boxer tend to fight in different weight class, like pacquiao, hopkins, etc.
Valid point, Mike. Right now, GSP's focus is to supplant Matt Hughes as the greatest welterweight of all-time. And it's hard to blame him for concentrating on his own weight class. But you are right, in order to go down as the best, he'd likely have to fight Anderson Silva (and Florian, for one, thinks he'd have a great chance to beat him). But it's really a big jump in weight, and I don't expect it to happen anytime soon.
It seems like Brock's standing defense is somewhat lacking, far more than any part of his ground game. Do people still view him as submission prone because of his loss to Mir?
I agree, Peter. I think Brock is more susceptible to getting knocked out than submitted at this point.
What about the THE SPIDER being the best P4P fighter of all time
Certainly in the mix. You just wonder how long he is for the sport.
Any momentum for scrapping the Mir-Kongo tilt in favor of a Big Nog-Mir rematch? I know I'd love to see it.
That possibility has certainly been floated out there. Wouldn't surprise me at all. The Kongo fight is a risky one for Mir.
I think Logan is hotter than Arianny. There, I said it.
Settle a dispute for me....Which heavyweight in the UFC has the best chance to beat Brock today? I argue Carwin only because of his KO power. Everyone else seems like they would just be overmatched, size-wise, to spring the upset.
Not sure I'm the guy to settle it, but I agree with you.
aslo about lesnar.. his chin hasnt really been tested yet, if carwin does decided to test it and connects with his powere..do you think lesnar will pass or fail?
You can be sure Brock's focus heading into the Carwin fight will be his stand-up defense. Anyone can get KO'd. But Lesnar is very adept at taking his opponent down as soon as that opponent starts to find his range. I expect Brock to pass.
do you ever see mousasi joining ufc? how many fights does he have left under strikeforce? i know Hes also part of m1 so would he follow the same route as fedor and bypass the ufc? i would love to see him against omen of ufc's lhw!
I think Mousasi will eventually land in the UFC. That's where the best light heavyweights reside, and Gegard cares very much about his legacy and place in the sport.
Who would Ken-Flo rather face Clay or Sherk?
Right now, Clay Guida. The Sherk loss is one Kenny would certainly like to avenge someday. But I think a convincing win over Guida would get him closer to a third title shot.
Do you ever see Brock fighting in a lower weight class?
Are you messing with me? He cuts 30 pounds to get down to 265.
no he barely cuts to make 265lb .. i got this one jon sry
Hahaha. Thanks man.
What were Kenny's personal feelings about Brock's rant at UFC 100 and what do you think are his personal feelings about Brock?
Kenny likes Brock. I believe they shared locker rooms at UFC 87 and UFC 91. Florian was disappointed in some of the display, but he chalked a lot of it up to post-fight emotion. And, as you guys know, the only think that bothered me was disrespecting Mir and giving the crowd the finger. You'd be hard-pressed to find a bigger Brock defender than me.
Has Kenflo ever expressed any interest in coaching TUF? I think he'd make an awesome coach
Certainly. I know living in Las Vegas for 6-8 weeks and being away from the family is not ideal for him. But he'd be a perfect fit for the show.
I, for one, am happy to see the Evans/Jackson match postponed. Evans needs as much rest as possible after suffering a knockout.
I respect your opinion, Bradley. And maybe the extra time off will serve to benefit Rashad. But in spending a lot of time with him over the past month, he looks ready to go and wants to fight. Now, he's staring at an 8-month layoff.
No one wants a piece of The Carpenter!
Except barbers nationwide.
McNeil's famous sources have any news on Heath Herring? Big fan of the Texas Crazy Horse, disappointed he hasn't fought since the Lesnar fight.
Send your question to the F-Mac at email@example.com
have you been contacted by UFC the Mag to contribute?
I haven't Jason. Would love to contribute, though. I started out as a print guy way back when in Boston.
Over/Under 4 fighters from TUF Season 10 fighting in more than two UFC fights off the show?
Good question. 4 is a high number, but given some of the names (Kimbo, Nelson) and all of the former NFL talent, I'm inclined to go over. Can never have too many heavyweights, in my opinion.
what's one lock I can count on next week's UFC fight night?
I've learned the hard way over the last two months that there are no locks in MMA. I really like Diaz, Cantwell and Brock Larson.
Do you actually call him the F-Mac?
We call him a lot of things.
Frank Trigg's return has been a little under the radar. He can certainly have a big impact on the division.
Totally agree. Really looking forward to his fight with Koscheck next weekend.
Is anyone keeping track of the MMA Live panel's pick accuracy? I'd be interested.
I think we missed the boat on that. Perhaps you can start! There percentages are not real good. Haha.
War Machine (now his real name) won over the weekend, and (if I remember correctly) has not lost a fight since exiting the UFC. Any chance he signs with DREAM/Strikeforce/UFC any time soon?
Risk outweighs the reward.
Yeah, probably the closest thing to it.
Huerta is at 300, isn't that a bit extreme?
Is he 300? If so, yes, that's a huge number. Huerta is going there to win.
Anderson vs. Gegard is the fight I most want to see down the line. Do you think Anderson retires before this is a possibility?
So hard to say, Robert. Anderson Silva seems very serious about retiring at the end of his current deal. But I expect the UFC to present him a monetary offer he can't refuse.
There will be a questionable ref decision.
That's the lock. Good call.
Marcus Davis vs. Ben Saunders at UFC 106. Those two will bang it out! That card is filling up nicely...
106 is stacked Ken, no doubt.
I think this is the most exciting time for the HW divison. What do you think Jon?
Totally agree. Who would've thought we'd be saying that 18 months ago?
Hey Jon, thanks for the chat. Now that 2 title holders are sidelined, do you think it affects the December PPV's?
I think anytime your champions are injured or facing inactivity, it weakens some of the PPV cards. But I don't expect the PPV buy-rate numbers to suffer at all. There's just a huge segment of the fan base that buys UFC PPVs, almost regardless of who is on it.
Lyoto Machida said he would like to fight Brock. Do you think that fight will ever happen and would The Dragon have a shot?
Who knows, Kristian? I still think Brock's size is a brutal challenge for most guys. But Machida has as good a chance as any non-heavyweight for sure.
Sorry to cut it short, folks. Solid hour today, but will definitely go 90 minutes or more next week. Business calls. But remember, Kimbo Slice is live in-studio on MMA Live tomorrow. And if I didn't get to your question here, try me on Twitter (Jon_Anik), or at firstname.lastname@example.org. Until next week, be well and be safe. -JA
