Hey everyone. Let's talk some football.
Give me your scouting report on the Falcons/Dolphins game including a final score. I'm thinking ATL 77 MIA 6.
Quite high on ATL myself this year, but that seems a bit high. Give me the Phins 71. Anyways, I would assume that Miami will do everything possible to shorten the game and eat clock. Keep Ryan and company off the field. Run the ball a ton-esp up the middle and really challenge P Jerry and the rest of ATL's DTs. That being said, their young secondary could be in for a very long game. Give me ATL-but I am not laying 71.
QUESTION TO MATT WILLIAMSON AT 12.2O PM HI MATT COWBOYS OR BUCS
Taking Dallas in this one. I really don't have a good feeling for TBay at all this year. Everyone talks about their QB problems-and that is serious-but I see the D really going downhill this year as well. Dallas in an easy one.
Behind Roy Williams, who will be the next most productive receiver in Dallas? Who's going to hold down the No. 2 receiver position?
Well, Witten will be more productive than Williams-no doubt in my mind. But at the WR position, I do think Austin will emerge (in time). He might not be real consistent and might not catch a lot of passes on a week to week basis, but he can fly and that deep ball ability will sit quite well with Romo.
Mort, with Kevin Jones going down, the Bears don't have a solid backup for Forte - I don't trust the "other AP", and Wolfe is too small. Do you see the Bears picking anyone else up? I think Bennett in SD would be a nice addition, and the Bears could likely get him for a 5th round pick.
This isn't Mort, but Bennett also doesn't really attract me at all. Would give TBay a call for sure. GBay has some guys to spare as well-but we all know that those two teams are not doing business.
What kind of numbers do you think Reggie Bush will put up on Sunday vs Detroit?
There is certainly potential there for a big play. Plus, he should see more of his traditional carries with Thomas on the sidelines. That being said, it also wouldn't shock me if NOrl got up heavy and Bush didn't play a ton near the end of the game.
I also really like Bush lined up against any of the Lions' LBs.
Two old Rb's not getting any respect this year...Jamal Lewis and Thomas Jones. Do you see either one of them having a good year?
Not so much. I see Leon Wash's role greatly expanding. He is NYJ's best playmaker by a wide margin. Also, I see the Browns having a long year and having to see what they have in Davis. Do they need to draft a RB high next year or is Davis able to give them what they want? So-in turn, your two guys' numbers should suffer.
do you see a lot of epic matches between joe cool and big ben in the future? talk about potential..
For sure. Excellent point. You hear a ton about how the NFC North has such a tremendous group of QBs now-well, the AFC North really isn't far off...if at all. If I ranked all eight starters on their play right now, I would go 1. Ben 2. Rodgers 3. Cutler 4. Palmer 5. Flacco 6. Favre 7. Stafford 8. Quinn....hard to rate the last two against one another though.
Matt (Chicago), thats 15 yards for improper use of the chat hosts name. Please know who you are chatting with. Automatic First Down!
Please remind Steven from Baltimore there was only one Joe Cool and that was Joe Montana.... tell him to find a different nickname, as Flacco will never be as good as Joe Cool!
Assuming Cadillac can stay healthy (BIG assumption), do you like the 2-2-1 idea that Raheem Morris plans on using in TB?
I don't love it. Sorta takes the ball out of a potentially hot hand. I would scheme it by opponent-much like NEng does.
Matt, is Kelley Washington going to be a guy that steps up and helps lead the Ravens offense?
Wow-you are really asking a lot from a guy who has only made his mark in this league as a special teams' star.
Who has the better week one between Ryan and Palmer?
Give me Ryan. In the dome against a revamped secondary. Should be a real good week.
You know what they say about running backs -- if you've got three starters you don't have one.
Give me the end of the season numbers for Josh Morgan.
Hmmm-he has not been impressive in the preseason, but I certainly like his talent and what we saw of him last year. Maybe 850 yards and six TDs-sound about right?
Does Nate Burleson bust out with Housh and Carlson as the primary Seattle weapons?
No, but I do see him making a few big plays. Home run guy who is also pretty good with the ball in his hands. However, this will be a short controlled passing game and Seattle's OL should have a tough time protecting, so going deep isn't going to be easy.
James Davis or Bernard Scott 2nd half of the year?
Ask me that in a week-let's see them both in live action first. If/when Scott does become the lead guy in Cincy though, I don't know that he will be considered an every down guy. Davis is more of the bell cow type. Sean, you are on fire for sure...actually-not to make you feel bad-but your posts have just happened to show up at the top of my queue...but still, nice work by you.
Sean from Cincinnati is on fire!
Do you know if Oakland can still rescind the trade if Seymour refuses to show up for a physical?
That I do not know, but I would think that is logical. Pure speculation on my part however. How unhappy would you be if you were Seymour right now? Awful.
Hasselbeck has NEVER had these type of weapons to work with (even his RBs can catch-something SA never did) do you think that if he stays healthy he can have a career year passing?
Possibly. Like I said, the deep ball might be a problem, but I also think that Seattle can sustain offense with a short controlled game that favors what Hass does well. Could happen.
Matt, Let me get this straight - Baltimore loses Bart Scott, Jim Leonhard and Rex Ryan, and they are going to take a step backward. The Patriots lose Richard Seymour, Tedy Bruschi, Rodney Harrison and Junior Seau, and they are going to the Superbowl. Do I detect a double-standard here?
NEng is getting Tom Brady back however and he is pretty good. I also don't see Balt taking a step back. Flacco is for real. It's now his O.
Is Josh Freeman starting after the bye? Not an easy first 7 games -- Dallas, Buf, Wash, Philly, NYG, Car, NE
That doesn't seem unreasonable. Leftwich is not the answer and I like said, I expect a long year for TBay-esp in such a tough division. Before long, it might be time to get Freeman out there. So, at the bye, I have TBay winning one game. Trouble.
What can the Bills do to at least be competitve against the Pats in Foxboro on MNF?
Must get to Brady. Force him to throw quickly. I don't dislike Buff's D...but their O is woefull.
The ONLY way Baltimore is going far is w/ an elite D where the Patriots have the firepower to have a mediocre D and win.
True, but Balt was a final four team last year and the QB looks much better than in his rookie season. I do think NEng is the better club, but I also see both advancing to the playoffs. The Ravens have a pretty good recipe for winning games. Very well coached.
how come you dont answer my questions, you dont like the broncos?
That is exactly it. You nailed it.
Before the draft, it was obvious that the Pats' glaring weakness was lack of enough quality linebackers (except Mayo and Thomas). Since then, they passed on their opportunities to draft a top notch LB, lost Vrabel and Bruschi, Crable is hurt, and they passed on trading for a top LB. What's the deal?
Well, Burgess does project to a 3-4 OLB. And-I can see NEng playing a lot more 4-3 overall. Put Wilfork and Brace right in the middle of the D and really let Mayo (who I really like) roam and hit. Think Ray Lewis behind guys like Siragusa.
Can the falcons strong offense carry a weak and inexperienced defense for a long playoff run?
I have them advancing to the Super Bowl. So...yes.
How far does Bradford drop in next year's draft?
Way too early to say. He has some very impressive tape already. Plus, he isn't out for the whole season. And-of course-he will be on display at the Combine and/or his Pro Day for an up close eval.
Darren Mcfadden? ready for a break out year?
I still don't love him. Goes down too easy. Straight line guy. However, I really like the combo of M Bush and McF if they use each player's strengths accordingly. Breakout year? Not quite, but respectable with several big plays.
Have the Bills succeeded in assembling the worst oline in history?
NFC Playoff teams - projections?
This was all posted today on the main NFL page with many of our projections, but I took Sea, Chi, Phil and Atl as division winners and NYG and NOrl as Wild Cards. NFC was much tougher for me though. I also like Dallas, GBay and Minny to make noise.
Is it just me or is all of the pressure on Green Bay to hold serve on Sunday night?
I wouldn't say that. No more so than in any other divisional matchup. One thing is for sure though, those six games between Minny, Chi and GBay are going to be critical. Should be awesome matchups.
What do you think of Jacksonville's new starters on D -- Considine and rookies Cox and Knighton?
Screams of a rebuilding year. There is talent there however. Going to have a real tough time getting out of the basement in the AFC South this year.
What is your thinking about Chicago winning the NFC North?
Improved D as much as anything. I certainly think Cutler is a vast improvement at the most critical position as well. I must be honest though, GBay and Minny are right there with Chicago for sure. Super tough call.
I have Josh Morgan as a starting FF WR. Can that really work or am I screwed?
If you are stacked everywhere else, perhaps. Still, it is a long year for sure and some more WRs will emerge-many of them were probably undrafted. Monitoring your team week to week is incredibly important.
How much noise will Chris Henry make ON the field this year?
I like him this year. The one problem I see is how well Cincy can protect for Henry to use his deep play abilities. Still, has a lot to play for and is a big time playmaker. Will have a better year than Coles.
Do you think Cutler's receivers will get open downfield/wide?
First off, I love Olsen. He could have a Witten-like year. I do think Hester can surely get open real deep downfield and that Cutler will find him. Bennett is kind of "Just a Guy", but if the two of them have some trust and continuity with one another, he could move the chains. Also, don't overlook Forte's contributions out of the backfield.
Do the Panthers wish they had signed run stuffing bargain DTs Grady Jackson or Hollis Thomas?
No question. Massive weakness in my eyes.
Will Cutler be happy with only throwing to TE's and RB's?
Good question. Maybe, but I do expect him to push the envelope quite a bit as well. True Gunslinger.
You have Percy Harvin winning OROY -- In what capacity do you see him being used in Minny? A lot of reverses/screens?
Yes and in time-best case scenerio-I think he actually has the skill set to be a more athletic and more explosive version of Wes Welker. The guy is strong and incredibly explosive. Work in progress for sure, but I also must admit that I also don't love the O rookie crop from top to bottom this year either.
Won't defenses be able to line up most players in between the hashes - and short - against Cutler/Forte?
Hester would frighten me in that regard.
Also, that is the beauty of having a guy with a rocket launcher for a right arm. He can really attack the perimeter.
I like to throw out misinformation at fantasy drafts and try to misdirect people. How cool is that?
I agree with you about the rookies this year, but I would tend to lean toward Moreno, if only because he's a running back behind a good offensive line. Plus the Broncos staff loves him. I guess the lack of a passing game and defense could hurt him in the end though
He would have been my 2nd choice. Was on the fence there. When I made the pick, Moreno was still questionable/doubtful for Week 1. Long season, but that did enter my mind. I also ranked their OL as the best run blocking group in the league.
They did that last year against the Bears and Forte was still solid...
Yeah, I sorta think that Forte is just going to get his one way or another just about every week. That kid screams consistency.
Who do you think will have a more productive rookie year... Donald Brown in Indy or Lesean McCoy in Philly?
Brown. Better all around player. I also think the guy in front of Brown is no where near the player that Westbrook is.
Matt what week one game are you most looking forward to seeing?
Tomorrow night. Kick off the season. Happens to be my home town. Should be a great game. Physical. Can't wait.
Outlandish trade? J.Peppers and Jonathan Stewart for Vince Wilfork and a high draft pick.
What? Holy smokes. I think Wilfork gets signed rather soon and that is what the Seymour trade is more or less all about.
Will Washington be able to run the ball against NYG?
That is going to be really tough. That OL is simply overmatched.
Will the texans finally have awinning season and get to the playoffs?
On the fence there. Didn't pick them to go, but I could see nine or ten wins. Still, give me them at 8-8....yet once again.
On the Fantasy Focus Football podcast, Reggie Wayne said that Addai would be the leading rusher for the Colts. Do you believe him?
I don't. Addai has looked good for sure, but I think Brown surpasses him before long. Plus, do you trust Addai to stay injury-free.
MW: KC Joyner said he thinks Arizona's O-line is generally underrated, with most of their linemen winning over 80% of their Points of Attack. That being said, and what Wells has shown so far, do you think Wells is going to have a great year? I know you chose Harvin as ORoY, but Wells is in a great position to make a push for it too.
He is. But, a huge problem that I have with Wells in that O is that he offers very little right now as a pass catcher and especially in pass protection. That is a massive problem considering how much they throw the ball.
M-DUB! Do you see L. Washington as a Westbrook-lite? The guy just seems so explosive and with Sanchez back there couldn't he be a big part of the short yardage passing game? Seems like all he needs is more opportunities to do his thing.
He needs many more touches and I get the feeling that Rex Ryan fully understands that. Maybe more of an MJD-lite...but not that much lighter either. The guy is very good.
The Washington Redskins Head Coach in 2010 will be _________. The Quarterback will be __________. (please do not say Zorn, Campbell, as funny as that would be)
That would be hilarious...and totally untrue. Cowher or Shanny would be my guess. The QB? Who knows. Not going to be a lot of top arms on the free agent market.
Will Jamaal Charles get more touches this year? He needs 10-12 rushes per game.
I think that is about right. I also expect KC to be losing a lot of games, which should favor Charles over LJ in the 2nd halves of games they are losing.
Breakout season for Visanthe Shiancoe with a QB that likes the TE, M-Dub?
His breakout season may have been last year. He was quite good. Will be better in 2009. Favre will love him.
How can a team (Buffalo) with no depth and no veterans on the O-line just release a starting Tackle? Are they planning to go sign Levi Jones or something?
I really don't think that is any better. Been EXTREMELY critical of this OL. It stinks.
M-Dub do you think eventually as the season goes along will Edge takeover the startin position from Julius Jones? I got my doubts about JJ.
I do as well. JJ isn't my kind of RB. Edge showed flashes in the playoffs. One thing I really like about the Edge signing is his pass blocking ability and he also should be a valuable outlet pass catcher-think back to his Indy days. I will take Edge as the Seahawks leading rusher this year.
James Davis will be the Cleveland starter by Week ______.
Over/Under 5 catches for B. Marshall this week?
Under. Just so much catching up to do. Could come on strong this year, but I don't love his chances right away.
Childress took the most risk didn't he?
Took a monster risk. Plus, he paid the guy a ton of money. That won't sit well with the owner if this little experiment is a flop.
Troy Williamson was once the #7 overall pick. Does this guy have the talent to be a good NFL WR?
He does. Poor hands though. Exceptional long speed, initial quickness and overall burst. Guy has another gear. Sloppy routes though.
Come on, Matt. Karl Malone's son and Brad Butler at OT, two rookie guards and a the league's worst starting center. What's not to like?
Sounds like a great recipe for success. Throw in a brittle QB and it works out really well!
are the ravens going to sign tyree or anybody for that matter?
Tyree isn't a differnce maker. Great special teamer though.
Belichick stockpiled that pick from the Raiders in order to get McDaniels to make a deal for Marshall. What do you think?
Not buying it. Marshall might be more work than he is worth. NEng robbed the Raiders and got exceptional value. That might be the first overall selection! NEng always has extra picks in the future. They do it so well.
is it possible that given the rules in dallas and their scoreboard that teams throwing hail marys on the last play can hit the video board and get to throw another one? or at anytime you throw the ball away to just hit the videoboard and get a replay of down?
Thought the same thing. Seems very likely to me.
Tory Holt numbers at the end of the season?
I think about the same as Morgan-850ish and five or six TDs.
NE took advantage of a SENILE Al Davis. How stupid does one have to be to trade a possible #1 overall pick for a 1 year player when you have NO SHOT at the playoffs?
You said that very well.
Best defense in the NFC North
Minny. Really like that group.
demarcus ware went up in sacks every year hes been in the league, could he possibly get even more this year?
Wow-that would really be something. However, he was my choice as DMVP this season. He is a terror.
Good Afternoon MattWhat do you think of Mr.Crabtree?
I thought he was the best player in this past draft and obviously he is getting some very poor advice...and is listening to that terrible advice.
Who wins Saturday; OSU v USC?
USC. Looking forward to that one as well. Ohio State made a major error in scheduling Navy for Week 1.
True or false: Braylon Edwards will play like he did in '07?
Closer to '07 than '08, but not as productive as '07...esp in the TD department.
I think Roger Goodell should veto all trades between the pats and the raiders...its just not fair. Rand Moss for a 4th rounder anyone?
Also very well said. Stealing.
With the Bucs using the RBBC they're best weapon on offense might be they're O-line, regardless of Caddy, Ward,
True-and I very much like that OL. Should just keep getting better. Still, going to see a lot of 8 man fronts.
major error in scheduling Navy week 1? Sorry MW, but San Jose State was booked already.
Well-you know OSU spent the whole off season prepping for USC. But, playing Navy is no fun. Odd O that they are very disciplined with. The player are all smart and extremely tough. Never give up. Playing the Acadamies isn't a lot of fun. Should have scheduled a MAC team.
Over/Under 3 weeks for caddy williams to retain the starting spot in TB?
O/U on how long it takes Caddy to go to IR?
Okay everyone. I am out. We will do this again next week and I am on as part of our marathon chat tomorrow as well. Tune in.
