Well, we're down to the wire and Kyle Busch still isn't in. What do you think will happen this weekend. I believe he'll win and slip past Kenseth or Biffle. Lots to discuss. Fire away.
hey david, i am a big matt kenseth fan and listen to his radio every week and his crew cheif drew blickensderfeer always messes up his car for the end of races. at bristol he even turned the air pressures the wrong way!!!!!!! and admitted to it!!!!!! you can tell matt is getting fed up with drew. i was wondering what the chances he gets robbie reiser back are
Don't forget Drew was the talk of the town after Kenseth won the Daytona 500 and the following week at California. While you're crucifying him why don't you go after Chad Knaus. He's made several mistakes the past month to keep Jimmie Johnson out of Victory Lane. Bottom line, stuff happens. Ride it out.
David, any news with regards to whether Yates or EGR for McMurray? It seems smarter that he goes to a place with better affilaition (Yates) than a place that even though they run well doesn't have that great affiliation.
No word yet, but I agree Yates seems like the safe place.
Wow, an article by David Newton once again mentioning the failures of Dale Earnhardt Jr in 2009. Ive read your chats for awhile now and have come to this conclusion. You seem sincerely frustrated with the all out attention and questions you recieve from Dale Jr fans, which in turn leads you to making sarcastic comments about his season or lack of success. Heres what you should take from this Dave. I am a Dale Jr fan. I, and many many other fans DO NOT care what is on his IPOD, and we dont care about other pointless things that for some reason ESPN covers. Has he had a terrible season....yes. Since thats the case, quit writing about him. Like I said, I am a huge fan of Dale Jr, but beleive me, I can go weeks if not months without reading about every little detail of his day to day life.
First, there is no frustration. I like the question. I also like Earnhardt There's nothing against him here. As for the article, it simply pointed out that fans and nascar and track promoters don't believe the Chase depends on Earnhardt's presence anymore. Nothing more, nothing less.
Newt, where do you see Bobby Labonte landing next year? I'm crossing my fingers that he and HOF Racing both revisit the past and align with Gibbs for a fourth car there. Any chance of that happening?
A Gibbs deal doesn't look like it's on the horizon. Maybe Earnhardt Ganassi Racing. They really wanted Bobby last year and had him all but signed before a last-second call from Yates.
Who in your opinion is the best driver in nascar making a comparison in terms of teams too.
That's easy. Jimmie Johnson. He's won three straight titles and more races over the past five or six years than anybody. Case closed.
I'm glad all the media is writing off Kenseth. As witnessed on Sunday, the guy is as blue collar as they come. That was an extremely gutty performance, and I can't help thinking if it was smoke, gordon, martin, etc.., there would be more praise out there for it. Did you see him push Busch right out of his way when he cut down in front of him? I know Kyle is a good soundbite, talented, and good for the sport, but don't get caught up in the fact that the guy in 12th is one of the smartest out there, and has yet to fold to pressure in his Cup career. Thanks David.
He has made the Chase every year since it was implemented in 2004, so he's doing something right. I wouldn't write him off either, but I believe somebody from 9-12 will get bumped off.
David, do you think Nascar should look into letting cingular and verizon and other phone companies in the sport since sponsors are so hard to find and teams(26, maybe the 1) are not going to be around next year?
I've thought that for some time, but it's not up to NASCAR. It's up to Sprint which had that rule written into the contract for its own exclusivity.
Definitly whos in whos OUT.
Not sure what the question is here. Please clarify.
Not a race goes by that I don't wish Dale Earnhardt was still out there or at least on the pit box.(I'm sure he would've retired by now) Mr. Newton, what is your favorite memory or story of The Intimidator? Thanks.
No real big story. Just his smile. I remember one night after a race in Charlotte he wasn't very happy with his finish. He didnt' want to hang aroudn to talk to the media. I followed him all the way to his pickup, which had been pulled into the garage. As I tried to ask a question he turned and gave that famous smile and hopped in the truck with Teresa without saying a word.
QUESTION TODAVID AT 2.20PM A GOOD THURSDAY DAVID WHOYOU HAVE RICHMOND SATURDAYNIGHT
Kyle Busch. He wins and makes the Chase.
how come im always hearing that scott speed may loose his ride? i thought they wanted him so bad thats why they let aj go? isnt it to early to close the book on him considering he came from f-1?
He isn't losing his ride, not after this season anyhow. They have invested too much in him to dump him after three-quarters of his first year.
Stewart said he's had all the top names in racing at his charity Prelude event-except Dale Jr. How come Dale refuses to help our Fallen and Wounded Heros?
You'd have to ask him. I know at one time his Budweiser contract kept him from driving in a lot of extracurricular activities. Not sure what the reason is now. Maybe he just doesnt' want to race on dirt.
whats the deal with peppers? is he really going to leave the team this year? thats a major blow to the panthers
Did I miss something over the last 24 hours? Last I heard Peppers had been given the Franchise Tag and would be with the team in 2009.
Why isn't Dale jr driving in Tony Stewarts for charity Prelude to the Dream event?
Again, maybe he just doesn't want to.
Bobby Labonte finished 18th last weekend in the 71 car. does this show how good bobby is or how bad yates racing is. also david gilliland finished 19th in the wood bros. car. these dirvers deserve full time rides next year.
Both had good days, but let's see how they do in a couple of rides for these teams.
is red-bull really going to let speed go? if so they will never have a second team that can help vickers because as soon as they get somewhat better they let them go thats stupid
Not that I've heard.
Do you think Nascar races will ever be pay-for-view events?
No way. They'd lose over half of the audience.
Hey David. What is your favorite Ryan Newman moment?
Watching him float in the machine that trains parachuters at Fort Bragg earlier this year. He truly was a hoot.
What are your predictions on Kasey Kahnes teammates for next year?
Sadler and Allmendinger will be back and Sorenson might be gone. Remember, just a prediction. Not saying it will happen.
Also is it a done deal Kahne will be with dodge next year?
Not done, but things are looking that way.
How come Dale Jr refuses to help out Tony Stewart by racing in the Prelude charity event helping our Fallen and Wounded Heros?
Wow, what's up with all the Junior and Prelude questions? A lot of drivers don't compete. Don't pick on this one.
I repeat what Jackson(Mobile Al) said
How are things in lovely Starkville? Played the Mississippi State golf course a few times. Not bad.
whats the word on scott speed and red-bull. are they really going to let him go?
Again, I haven't heard that. Will be glad to check on it even though nobody has given me reason to think so.
We can understand why Gordon and Carl skipped Tony Stewart's Prelude and Robby is at Baja but why does Earnhartdt refuse to race in an event helping Fallen and Wounded Vets?
He has National Guard on his car. I think not.
Im not a kyle bush fan dave, but i hope he makes the chase. if he doesnt then everyone will scream for a new chase format. and in my opinion (i no many people dont agree with me) but we should leave the points how they are. there is to much chnage going on and i feel one of the biggest problems with nascar is that there are so many web sites with different fan opinions on what to do with the chase that no matter what nascar does most of the fans will disagree. however i do agree they should give more points to winners but only about 10 more points. Cause giving more points to winners is not make the drivers race harder because they alredy race as hard as they can.
I agree. If winning is so important, double what the winner gets. Maybe triple. And why not let the drivers use those bonus points to get into the Chase, not for reseeding?
I kept hearing at Atlanta (and other tracks) that teams put on a "bad" set of tires which dropped them back. How much variation is there to tires, how do you get a "bad" set?
It's like most things that are manufactured, no two sets of tires or sets of baseballs or whatever else you pick are exactly alike.
is red-bull really considering giving speed his walking papers? if so why dont they just become a single car team then?
Sounds like something for the rumor mill. Let me make a call while I chat. OK, left a message.
I really liked your piece on your interview with Bruton Smith...you made his cat and mouse game of dodging questions into a really enjoyable article. Normally when an interviewee doesn't say anything the resulting article suffers and is unreadable...kudos on making it one of your star pieces of the year...thoroughly enjoyable!!!
Thanks for the kind words.
Tony Stewart pointed out that all the big names in Nascar have raced in his Prelude charity events except Dale Jr. What is Dale's problem with helping out Tony and running for charity races?
Argh. Dale, if you are reading this, please call. Thanks, David
Whats up David. I was wondering what the points would look like right now if the first race of the chase was this week?
Mark Martin would jump to the top of the leaderboard, followed by Tony Stewart and Jimmie Johnson. All would be based on 10 bonus points for each win.
your answers are all messed up they are completely out of wac
Not again. I was told to give each answer five seconds to post after answering it. I have done the one one-thousand, two one-thousand deal. Maybe I'm still too fast. Will try to slow down.
When Roush had 5 cars in the chase Nascar howled and came up with the 4 car rule. Now Henrick has 5 cars in the chase (24, 48, 14, 5 and 39). What will Nascar do about that?
Funny. Nothing they can do now.
I was at the Outer Banks and missed 2 weeks of chat. So I've been stewing since 2 weeks ago when you called Junior a circus. Nooooo, Junior is not a circus...YOU writers create the circus-type atmosphere around Junior.
Hey, did you get too much sun down there? Even Tony Eury Jr., his cousin and former crew chief, called life around Junior a circus. I didn't start it.
Got my fingers crossed for Juan Pablo in the chase. What do you think is the major factor for the sucess of that team this year?
Patience. Juan Pablo has learned that consistency pays off more than getting too aggressive and making bad days worse.
I ordered the Prelude last year on PPV and was dissappointed by how short it was, was it any better this year? who won?
It is tonight, weather permitting. I hear rain is in the forecast again.
That was some decent racing in Atlanta- could some of that info help racing at Charlotte- Sometimes it gets strung out since good handling cars can dominate- but there were enough of those at Atlanta to make things interesting.
There was some good action there. Not sure it'll translate. The tracks are the same distances but still very different.
hey dave how did your fantasy draft go. last week i gave you advice about ray rice, did you take him?
Tried to get him but didn't. Actually had the draft last night. Like my team a lot. Went RB, RB, WR, RB just as I typically do. Was able to get two decent QBS from the fifth round down. It's the same formula that has worked for me since 1995. No need to mess with it.
Tony Eury Jr was assigned to work on the #48 road course program. Was his work considered successful?
Jimmie's still winless on road courses. That's all I know.
What do you think of Blount's idea of making the first race of chase at a more marquee venue that New Hampshire? He suggested Indy...which is marquee, but a little boring for stock cars. Still...I like the idea. Richmond is a great and really exciting venue for the race before the chase...I think they need something better for the first race of the chase...thoughts???
Indy stands fine by itself. I'd go for Vegas if there were a change. Start off with the glitz and bright lights. I still think the season should end back at Daytona.
Which NASCAR driver can make the transistion into another sport (competitive eating) and win the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest? My sleeper pick - Joey Logano.
I'll go with Tony Stewart. And he'll wash them down with milkshakes.
Did Stewart peak too early in the season to win the championship and why has the #48 team lost it's competitive edge?
Not sure what's going on with the 48 right now, but odds are they will get it going in the Chase. They usually have a summer swoon. As for Tony, remember Kyle Busch dominated the regular season a year ago and Jeff Gordon the year before that.
What is Scott Speed's reel last name?
I always assumed it was Speed.
We must be related. Do you have any relatives in San Diego?
If I did I'd visit often. Go to the Newton Reunion facebook site. See if you know anybody.
AND FOR ALL OF YOU THAT ASKED SCOTT SPEED QUESTIONS, I AM TOLD THERE ARE NO PLANS TO LET HIM GO.
newt, im all ready for eldora tonight, you got a winner?
I like Busch. This starts his sweep of the week.
Since Dale Jr is out of the chase would Mr H ever consider putting Skinner in the car for the rest of the season so they can figure out if the 88's problems are car or driver?
I'm laughing out loud here. Let's seem. Um. No. But I'll mention it to Mr. H this weekend and see what he says.
what is the likelyhood of seeing Danica Patrick on the Sprint Cup circuit full time in the next couple of years?
Nationwide and Trucks probably. Cup not likely for at least three years, at least fulltime. She could pop in for a cameo appearance after the IRL season over the next two years.
Also I read EGR is exploring Manufact.any insight.
Everybody is talking to everybody, but unless EGR drops the E part that has strong ties to Chevrolet that won't happen.
I think Nascar should look into having all Chase races on Saturday nights, that way they won't have to compete with the NFL for ratings. Nascar playoff races should be in primetime.
I'll vote for that now. They would go head to college football, though. But I'd love to have more Sundays at least half off.
Will Danica be teamed up with Stewart and Newman in a 3 car Nationwide team at Daytona?
I doubt it. If the deal gets done I look for her to team with Kevin Harvick who actually owns a Nationwide program. Stewart does not.
What happen to JR after that last restart in Atl?
He stopped for a burger at the infield drive thru. Lost a lot of time.
hey newt, after the 9's win on sunday, do u think that team could actually compete for a championship?
I wouldn't go that far, but Kahne has come on strong the second half of the season.
Why does Harvicks wife wear a Penzoil outfit while all the other wives and girlfriends wear regular street clothes?
I'm told there was a fire on pit road one time that scared her and she's worn the suit ever since. I don't know if that is completely true, but it makes sense.
Great story on Dale's loss of importance in the Nascar pecking order. Have #88 merchandise sales also tanked along with his reputation?
Thanks. And they still are strong, just not as strong as they have been. Stewart actually outsells him at a lot of tracks, mainly because his merchandise is new.
Dave, you're crusin' for a bruisin'. Junior just got a bad set of tires that last stop, not a burger.
Thanks for clearing that up. The burger idea was good. Speaking of drive throughs. Took my dog Ernie through the Chic Fila on Monday when they were giving free chicken sandwiches to everyone that came wearing their favorite sports team logo. He had a Duke Blue Devils collar.
Do yo uthink Jeff Gordon has another championship in him
I honestly do, but he needs to do it soon. Not sure how long the back will hold up.
I think the chase should start at talladgea. cant get more exciting then that plus i think talladega is to late in the chase this year
Dega wouldn't be a bad choice. Get things started off with a real bang-bang.
What drivers currently in Cup do you feel will be HOF's when they retire?
Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, Tony Stewart, Matt Kenseth and Dale . . . nah, too early on that one.
hey david, first i wanna say you write some great article on here, but i got a question for you.Do you think the Nascar Sprint Cup circuit should consider dropping the field down to 38 or so?b/c i tell u what,if they ever come to alaska i might just try to qualify my ford in the race and park it.
No reason to drop it just yet. Alaska would be a great place to park it. I was in Ancorage one time and there was so much snow I found myself on the runway at the airport where I shouldn't have been. Everything just blended into one.
Now that Brad has signed with Penske will Henrick and Phoenix cancel the rest of his schedule cup races?
Good question. I don't think so, but will check for you.
Hey, we have an Alaskan Huskie. What's your dog?
Shepherd rescue. But he's a mix of Shepherd and Lab. All black with one ear up for the Shepherd and one down for the Lab. He has that ruh-roh look of Scoobie Do.
So...if I goes to the Newton family reunon page and dont reignize people that meens we ain't relatid?
I hope that's the case, Tank. As much as I love having you on chats, I'm not ready to deal with you as a family member.
Was Roush truely upset with Edwards over "Frisbeegate"?
Only that he wasn't invited. Heck, I don't know.
How worried should I be this weekend about JPM not making the chase and what kind of noise can he make in the chase? Seems to have figured out the 1.5 mile tracks pretty good as of late.
I think he'll make it, but he'll need to win a few to be a serious contender.
Poor old Dale jr and the writers, him/writers sneeze and all hell breaks loose, attacks on both fronts. That being said, did promoters/tracks/NASCAR actually believed that if Dale Jr was not in the chase attendance/viewership would be down? I dont think I have seen drove of fans walk out of the race track when Dale Jr was knocked out. Are we at a point that everyone one understands that thier life/NASCAR after Dale Jr.
There really was concern that his absence would impact the Chase. And yes, we have all grown up and gotten past that.
did you watch FSU - miami, heck of a game huh? go 42
Unbelievable game. The Noles should have won. The guy just dropped it. On that note, I'll drop off and get packed for Richmond. Until next week.
