Chat with Dan Rafael

Dan Rafael
  (12:05 PM)

Greetings Fight Freaks. The fall season is upon us. We've got lots of fights this weekend with Kessler and Ward in tune-ups, a pair of small PPVs with Chavez Jr. and Calderon headlining their shows and big fights coming the next two weeks with Mayweather-Marquez and Vitali Klitschko-Arreola. There's a big notebook, an updated schedule and a big blog coming shortly. So let's get to it!

Luis ((PR))

DTM, are 8 weeks of training enough for Manny? He looked a bit on the heavy side in yesterday's pictures.

Dan Rafael
  (12:07 PM)

I think eight weeks is plenty. Once camp starts, Freddie Roach runs a tight ship. I think Manny will be just fine. Remember, he doesn't need to get that far down in weight since the bout is at 145. He's not going to 140 like he did for the Hatton fight in May.

Fitfighter56 (USA)

Whats the word on Sergio Martinez, he hasnt fought since last December.

Dan Rafael
  (12:07 PM)

TBA.

Greg P (Staten Island,NY)

Dan, has Berto's next fight been offically announced? if against I.H. would it be a unification fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:08 PM)

No it hasn't. I would encourage you to read my blog when it posted in a bit. It details what is going on with that, which is a bit too complicated to get into in a chat.

Joel (Eastchester, NY)

Dan, how many televised matches are there tomorrow night for the Latin Fury 11 PPV?

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 PM)

Four are scheduled -- Chavez, Montiel bantamweight defense, Nietes-Vargas strawweight title bout and Z Gorres vs. Carvajal.

Fitfighter56 (Philly)

If kessler lost how would that effect the super six?

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 PM)

Read today's notebook which addresses that exact question.

Rep. Joe Wilson (South Carolina)

Dan, You LIE!

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 PM)

No I don't.

Greg P (Staten Island,NY)

Dan, how soon could we see a mega fight at Yankee Stadium? It was exciting to see Manny/Cotto at The Stadium!!

Dan Rafael
  (12:10 PM)

Arum has been beating that drum for years now. I will believe it when I see it.

Raul Jr. (Everett, WA)

Hey Dan, while I was watching the Bradley-Campbell fight on Aug. 1st I got on the ESPN Boxing web page and there was already a column on how Bradley won by TKO and the fight hadn't even began. Are Showtime fights not LIVE? And if not, then why aren't they?

Dan Rafael
  (12:11 PM)

On the West Coast, Showtime bouts are tape delayed, unfortunately. If you have cable or a dish with the East Coast feed you can watch them live. I have Showtime West and HBO West on my cable, so folks on the West Coast probably can get the east feeds as well.

Sergio (San Diego)

Dan,If Marquez beats Floyd, forget Wheaties, it's gonna be "Pee Pee", the breakfast of champions.

Dan Rafael
  (12:11 PM)

Well, the beverages of champions anway.

Luke (PL)

Hello Sir. So Marvin Sonsona is pretty amazing, huh? Any word from Lewkowicz about his next opponent?

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 PM)

It was a terrific performance in an excellent fight. No word on the opponent but Sonsona is supposed to make his first defense on Nov. 21 in Ontario, Canada at the same place he won the title.

jamesa (Ottawa)

Dr. Dan, do you believe the reports of out Arreola camps that he is physically ready for Klitschko?

Dan Rafael
  (12:14 PM)

I spoke with Cris and his trainer, Henry Ramirez, yesterday on a conference call. They were repeatedly asked about his weight and conditioning and they addressed it. Cris said he weighed 259 that day and he was probably dropping another few pounds before the fight. He sounded confident and excited about the fight. He did crack a funny joke about taking weight off by stopping drinking beer in his camp.

lopez84 (ok)

hey dan what u think about guerrero vs martinez unification

Dan Rafael
  (12:15 PM)

Would be a good fight. That said, I know that this week in New York, Guerrero's manager, Shelly Finkel, and Todd duBoef from Top Rank met to talk about Guerrero vs. Humberto Soto. It's a fight HBO is interested in for early 2010. That's an even better fight than Martinez.

Tomas (Texas)

Do you predict May/Marquez bringing in good numbers? Over or under 1 mil?

Dan Rafael
  (12:16 PM)

Absolutely under. If it does more than 1 million I will shave my head on national television if ESPN gives me the outlet.

Joel (Eastchester, NY)

Dan, what happened to the Shobox triple header next Friday? I notice Showtime has only two fights listed now.

Dan Rafael
  (12:16 PM)

Anthony Dirrell suffered a hand injury and is off the card.

Benvenuto (Miami)

Is there anyword out of the Diaz camp about their interest in fighting Malignaggi in NY early next year?????

Dan Rafael
  (12:17 PM)

I haven't heard if they are willing to go East or not, but I know HBO is interested in the rematch. I am told HBO actually made an offer to do the rematch on Boxing After Dark on Dec. 12, but it offered the same money for the rematch that they paid for the August fight and that was rejected.

Brock (Belleville)

Is Zab back on the Mayweather card?

Dan Rafael
  (12:17 PM)

No.

Kent (St Catharines)

If Arreloa comes in over 250 lbs we won't last 3 rounds. Come to think of it he might not last 3 rounds either way.

Chris Metler (Toronto)

Looks like Juan Manuel Marquez has found something to leave a more bitter taste in his mouth that those Pacquiao decisions!

Dan Rafael
  (12:19 PM)

Classic.

Jess (Miami)

Dan, any confirmation as to whether or not Joel Julio will be fighting on Telemundo next month?

Dan Rafael
  (12:19 PM)

Promoter Tuto Zabala said it's possible, but no confirmation.

Rick, (Marina)

Is it safe to say that the Valero vs Soto undercard for Cotto-Pac is a no-go?

Dan Rafael
  (12:20 PM)

Probably. I hold out very little hope.

Richard (Kendall Park, NJ)

"If it does more than 1 million I will shave my head on national television "... But you're keeping the beard, right Dan?

Dan Rafael
  (12:20 PM)

I'll lose the beard too.

Daniel Kiflai (Tor, Ont)

Whats your opinion on Mosley getting the shaft from HBO and having his date moved to next year? Mosley was nice enough to give his original date to the Pavlik/Williams fight and this is what he gets in return..

Dan Rafael
  (12:21 PM)

He didn't really have a choice. Just a bad situation.

Rick (Saint Paul, MN)

BLOG IS UP!!

Eric (North Hollywood,CA)

Hey Dan, What fight is going to replace judah on the undercard of pac/cotto?

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

Nothing very good. They may go with three TV fights. They may air Cornelius Lock-Orlando Cruz, which is basically meaningless.

Pancho (Los Mochis)

The fight I am looking towards most this weekend is Tyson Fury v. Darren McDermot - am I crazy?

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

Fury has gotten a lot of hype and this is easily his biggest test, so no.

Richard (Kendall Park, NJ)

Dan, remember when we all had a laugh at Vitali for using his baby's wee wee on his hands? Doesn't seem that bad anymore, does it?

Dan Rafael
  (12:24 PM)

I actually was thinking about that yesterday. You're right!

Nick (Harrisburg, PA)

Dan, i went on the NFL marathon chat yesterday, and made sure to say, and i quote, "Dan Rafael is the true marathon chatter!"

Dan Rafael
  (12:24 PM)

Thanks!

Ryan (Saratoga Springs, NY)

But Dan if you shave your beard, wont you lose all your super powers like Sampson??

Dan Rafael
  (12:25 PM)

No. My powers are not ruled by my hair.

Aaron (Hartford)

Steve Forbes signs with DK...what is he thinking ?

Dan Rafael
  (12:25 PM)

I wish I knew.

Matt (San Diego)

Dan, Since Zab pulled out out of the fight, Does Goldenboy still plan to have Antonio Diaz fight on the televised card? If so, who?

Dan Rafael
  (12:26 PM)

No, Diaz is off the show. They looked for another opponent for him but from what Golden Boy told me, once Judah was out, Diaz didn't want a new opponent.

Joel (Eastchester, NY)

Dan, any idea what will replace Johnson-Solis on October 10th?

Dan Rafael
  (12:26 PM)

Solis will stay on the card and Top Rank is looking for a new opponent.

Nick (Harrisburg, PA)

Dan without a beard......scary thought

Dan Rafael
  (12:27 PM)

The fight won't do a million so don't worry. I've had facial hair since college -- so long ago that my wife, who I have known since the early 90s has never seen me without it.

Paul B (NY, NY)

DTM- Dougie Fishcer was asked the same question in his mailbag and concurred with what you said- no beef with rafael and he also had very high praise for your writing abailities.

Dan Rafael
  (12:28 PM)

I saw that. We are fans of each other. Dougie is a true boxing guy with a lot of knowledge. I respect his opinion as much as any other writer I know.

Javier ((New York))

Dan, do you think Jorge Arce is a HOF?

Dan Rafael
  (12:28 PM)

Which HOF? The boxing HOF? Surely you jest.

Brian (DC)

Pavlik got medical clearance.... so what's holding up the announcement regarding a rescheduled date?

Dan Rafael
  (12:29 PM)

He doesn't have medical clearance regardless of what you may have read. They HOPE that around Oct. 10 he will be cleared, but as of now, he is not cleared, period.

Marc (Charlotte)

What did you think of Shaq's boxing skills and did you think he should have gotten the decision?

Dan Rafael
  (12:30 PM)

I enjoyed the show. Obviously, the guys were not going all out but it was entertaining. I thought Oscar deserved it from what I saw.

Aaron (Hartford)

Dan, have you seen anyone is recent times with such and up and down career are Sergio Mora. What is lined up for him? I am beginning to feel bad for him which I thought I would never do...

Dan Rafael
  (12:31 PM)

As far as I know, he has nothing remotely in the works. I feel bad for him also because he's a good fighter and he's a good guy.

Greg (Los Angeles)

Dan whats the deal with King moving so slow to put Alexander on a HBO card? Makes no sense.

Dan Rafael
  (12:31 PM)

Who knows. Don is Don. That said, I am told that HBO plans to put Alexander on in the first quarter of 2010 on a BAD card.

Frank Booth ((Lumberton, NC))

Is James Toney done...? Could he still compete with a Klitschko?

Dan Rafael
  (12:32 PM)

I wouldn't give Toney a prayer with either Klitschko.

Benvenuto (Miami)

Is the Madaina / Holt fight finalized? If so, and Holt wins, will he get the winner of the Salita / Khan fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:32 PM)

No, it's not. Nothing is finalized with regard to Maidana on Nov. 28. It's being worked on.

Metty (T.O.)

What is with Oscar spewing off all this "how to beat Mayweather..." advice as if he actually did it himself?

Dan Rafael
  (12:33 PM)

I did find that peculiar.

Matthew (Ct)

So, mayweather can't beat the pi$$ out of marquez, right?

Chris (Vancouver BC)

Behind on deadlines at work. The CEO keeps popping into my office asking me if they're done, and im on the chat and not going anywhere til the fat lady sings. Freak status?

Dan Rafael
  (12:33 PM)

In the immortal words of our broadcast hero: Definitely.

Joe Roche (411mania.com)

Dan, have you heard any confirmation on Valuev-Haye, and Salita-Khan being on ESPN Classic?

Dan Rafael
  (12:34 PM)

This is not true. It's a bad rumor. Those fights may end up on ESPN's UK platform, not in the United States. ESPN does not own the US rights to those fights and I doubt it will buy them.

Rick, (Marina)

Whats your second favorite sport? Im guessing it is football.

Dan Rafael
  (12:34 PM)

Baseball. I am a lifelong Yankees fan. Football is also great and I am lifelong Giants fan.

Brandon (Florida)

Dan, need some advice from you and the freaks. I'm at lunch and trying to figure what i should down first. Should I go with the delicious quail eggs, or tasty urine. Any suggestions??

Brian (DC)

Will Merchant be working both Floyd-JMM and Cotto-Pac, or will Max get one?

Dan Rafael
  (12:36 PM)

Max is working Mayweather-Marquez. Larry will be at Klitschko-Arreola the following week. Larry will also work the Cotto-Pac fight.

Gerardo (Los Angeles)

Lt. Dan, do you think that the July postponement will help Marquez? I'm thinking it might help him get used to the higher weight.

Dan Rafael
  (12:37 PM)

I don't think it makes a difference for either guy.

Benvenuto (Miami)

I just read the first part of your blog, and I think the segment on HBO gave me an anuerism.

Dan Rafael
  (12:37 PM)

Why?

Kent (St Catharines)

I am still not sure why HBO got scared of the Dec 26th date for Mosley. I think it would be like the NBA putting marquee match ups on Christmas day. I always watch those games and I think the Mosley fight on boxing day would get similar response and viewers.

Dan Rafael
  (12:38 PM)

I don't agree at all, especially because Mosley-Clottey is a good fight but not THAT marquee of a fight. The fight would generate very little media attention on that date and Shane has never been a big ticket seller even on a good date. A fight with Clottey on the best date wouldn't do a big gate. On Dec. 26, it's DOA.

Metty (T.O.)

Did you hear Arum is talking about another stadium fight? Does that mean we should brace ourselves for some Macau mumbo-jumbo any minute now?

Dan Rafael
  (12:39 PM)

Exactly.

Rick, (Marina)

I dont remeber if I asked this already, but will you be in LA for Klits-Arreola fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:39 PM)

Yes, I will be there. I do not look forward to that flight.

Alex (Clev, OH)

Dan-o, What previous fights will HBO show to warm us up for the PPV next weekend?

Dan Rafael
  (12:39 PM)

Mayweather-Hatton and Marquez-Juan Diaz.

Benvenuto (Miami)

Just a growing respect for the intracacies which HBO has the iron out on a daily basis. I think in dealing with managers, promoters, injuries, fighters, ego's, budgets, and of course the woeful unexpected......its just alot. Your blog was a reminder of how appreciative we should be for every fight that gets made.

Dan Rafael
  (12:41 PM)

Good call. There are a lot of issues that go into making televised fights. It's not as easy as it looks. The HBO guys work hard but sometimes stuff happens and they have to work through it. Now, sometimes they bring the problems on themselves, but you're point is dead on.

C.M. (Canada)

Thhis freak says chat/notebook/blog tripleheader tops anything since "Revenge Of The Rematches"!!!!!

Steve (Hartford)

Anything on tap for Delvin Rodriguez?

Dan Rafael
  (12:41 PM)

Nothing specific, but I would expect to see him back on ESPN2 in early 2010.

Chris (Kalamazoo, MI)

Dan, I think I'm starting a new project. I'm gonna put together a notebook of your chats, blogs, notebooks and articles. Being as you're the only boxing journalist I really trust, I think it will be a good project to keep your thoughts/news in order. Thanks for the updates.

Dan Rafael
  (12:42 PM)

You sound a bit obsessive but I am honored.

Joel (Eastchester, NY)

Dan, I notice UFC is going full force next Saturday even showing some perlim fights on free TV to counter people from ordering the boxing PPV, your thoughts?

Dan Rafael
  (12:43 PM)

They can do what they want. Some folks will watch UFC, some will buy the PPV, others will do both. I really don't care what UFC is doing. Good luck to them.

Benvenuto (Miami)

Any truth to the rumors about Chavez Jr. and John Duddy being made? That would at least be a real fight for Chavez Jr.

Dan Rafael
  (12:43 PM)

Arum wants to make that fight and Chavez and Duddy may fight on the same card Dec. 12 ahead of them meeting each other. Chavez, of course, also has to take care of business on Saturday.

Brian (DC)

Any reliable word on how many tickets Floyd-JMM has actually sold to this point?

Dan Rafael
  (12:44 PM)

No, but one of my peeps at MGM told me a few days ago sales were "soft." I do not know how many that means. I am sure it will pick up as the fight gets closer, it gets more hype and the Mexican fans roll into Vegas a few days before the bout.

Tommy ((Temecula, CA))

have you ever drank your own pee?

Dan Rafael
  (12:44 PM)

I'm trying to cut down.

Paul B (NY, NY)

Does anyone have any advil? I just read the blog and my head is pounding. Who has mopre clout with HBO to secure the jan date? Mosley or Bhop?

Dan Rafael
  (12:45 PM)

I would say they are about equal.

Mark (Brooksville, Fla.)

Enjoying the 24/7 shows on Floyd vs JMM. I'm wondering if you know how long, on average, do fighters actually train each day? Is it only a couple of hours a day or longer?

Dan Rafael
  (12:46 PM)

Many of the guys I have talked to about that usually do two sessions. There will be maybe a morning run and workout and an afternoon boxing session, something like that. Part of the day is spent sparring and doing boxing stuff. Another part of the day would be for other general conditioning. Maybe 4 hours a day of actual training.

Brock (Belleville)

Well, I might be the only one but I would much rather see Berto unify with IH and then fight Bradley-Peterson winner than fighting Mosley. I still feel like Mosley is a significant favorite and I really like the Bradley-Berto fight if it happened.

Gerardo (AZ)

Why is it that you're not looking forward to the Arreola-Klitschko fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:47 PM)

I never said that. In fact, I have said and written the exact opposite. I am looking forward to it. I think it will be an exciting fight for as long as it lasts.

Antonio Margarito (Mexico)

Whats the big deal about JMM drinking his own Urine? I do it too for strength. It doesn't work as well as Plaster of Paris, but it works regardless.

Brian (DC)

We all know 1 million PPV buys is out of the question, but what do you think a reasonable over-under is? 550-600K?

Dan Rafael
  (12:48 PM)

Yes, that's sort of where I think it lands -- in the 600,000 range, which is still excellent even if not HUGE.

Bing (Philly)

Rick, (Marina)I dont remeber if I asked this already, but will you be in LA for Klits-Arreola fight?Dan Rafael (12:39 PM)Yes, I will be there. I do not look forward to that flight.

Dan Rafael
  (12:48 PM)

Flight not fight. Learn to read.

Brandon (San Diego)

DTM, where can I find fights of Marvin Sonsona? I' am of Filipino descent and have family from GSC (General Santos City) Sonsona has been making a buzz for a long while over there. I havent seen him fight yet though.

Dan Rafael
  (12:49 PM)

The complete fight is available to be watched on TSN's Web site. TSN is the Canadian sports network (like their version of ESPN) that televiseed the fight. It's terrific.

Floyd Mayweather (Las Vegas )

I'm so rich I pay people to drink my urine.

Rick (Saint Paul, MN)

Good Afternoon Dan!! Can I get you a nice warm glass of urine with your lunch?

Peter Gozinya (Bronx, NY)

Dan, is Nonito Donaire OK? Dengue fever is no joke...

Dan Rafael
  (12:50 PM)

I spoke to his manager, Cameron Dunkin, yesterday. He told me Donaire spent four days in the hospital but he is out and fine and hoping to fight again before the end of the year.

Luke (Danbury, CT)

I wonder what goes through your head the first time you drink pi$$???

Nick (Charleston, SC)

Do you think Shaq would have beaten DLH if his training regimen had included a frosty glass of JMM's pee?

Dan Rafael
  (12:52 PM)

One never knows does one?

Q (Waterbury,CT)

Hey my man Dan, this question may be stupid but bear with me. Why doesn't HBO give Mosely-Clottey and Berto-I.H. the same date and make Mosely the headliner and if Mosely and Berto win they unify? Since Berto and I.H. probably can't do big numbers if they headlined this could be pretty good.

Dan Rafael
  (12:52 PM)

It's not a stupid question. It was explored for Dec. 26, but it is expensive to do that first off. It didn't go very far.

Decorum (Rye, NY)

ENOUGH WITH THE PEE POSTS, PLEASE!

Dan Rafael
  (12:53 PM)

Never enough pee posts.

David (Reno)

Dan - you said Andy Lee was fighting a few weeks ago in Indiana. Did he fight, and if so, what was the result?

Dan Rafael
  (12:53 PM)

He won.

Aaron (MA)

why can't HBO put Williams/Pavlik and Clottey/Mosley on the same telecast on December 5th?

Dan Rafael
  (12:54 PM)

Because to do that would probably cost close to $6 million, not to mention it means the promtoers have to share the card, only get one gate, one international payment, one sponsor payment, etc... It is not remotely doable from a financial perspective.

D (DC)

Did Lamont Peterson really whip Floyd in sparring?

Dan Rafael
  (12:55 PM)

I have talked to people who know what happened and they say, yes, Lamont handled Floyd on at least one day in good fashion.

R! (Yay Area)

Why hasnt the Oakland Arena been confirmed for the Kessler-Ward bout in November?

Dan Rafael
  (12:59 PM)

Because both guys fight this weekend. They'll finalize it after the weekend I am sure.

Kess (SC)

Will the Cotto-Pac fight get a 24/7 series?

Dan Rafael
  (12:59 PM)

Looks like someone missed yesterday's blog.

Brandon (Arlington, VA)

DTM, will the WBO clause about fighting in your home town/region disrupt the Bradley/Peterson fight, or is that date firm?

Dan Rafael
  (1:02 PM)

It's a big problem. The WBO has already changed from 60-40 for Peterson to 50-50. Bradley feels he still deserves more based on language elsewhere in the WBO's horrifically written rules. It's possible he will decline the fight. Ultimately, I think it will get worked out.

Banishment (Dan's basement)

Sit down and make yourself comfortable, Kess...

Christopher (Linz, Austria)

Hi Dan! Which promoter carried Sergei Lyakhovich through his first title reign? It's hard to find information about this guy.

Dan Rafael
  (1:03 PM)

Don King.

Randy (Cincinnati, OH)

Dan, I was wondering if you know how much HBO pays the fighters to do 24/7?

Dan Rafael
  (1:04 PM)

Nothing. It's done to promote the fight. Actually, the promoters of the fights pay for most of the show and allow HBO editorial control.

Titus (Washington, DC)

When will you be on TV next, Dan?

Dan Rafael
  (1:05 PM)

I did some SportsCenter yesterday. And I will be doing some television work in Vegas next week at Mayweather-Marquez.

Geovany (San Diego)

Now that judah is off the card, are we only getting 3 fights on Sept 19th???

Dan Rafael
  (1:05 PM)

OK, people, yet again: Right now it is TBA. There are three fights on TV. They MAY add a fourth fight from elsewhere on the undercard. It is not yet determined.

R! (Yay Area)

FYI, OnDemand PPV section also replaying Marquez-Pacquaio I

will (Springdale, Ar)

Hey the Dan the Man does JMM drink his piss cold or warm??? LOLWill PAC/COTTO be in theathers also???

Dan Rafael
  (1:06 PM)

I assume warm since he took a leak and drank it down like 10 seconds later.

Gerardo (Los Angeles)

Dan, where can we find out the dates/times for promotional appearances. I saw in your blog that both big fights have events in Los Angeles but don't know where and at what time.

Dan Rafael
  (1:08 PM)

Mayweather and Marquez have open worksout in LA on Monday at the Kodak Theater. Mayweather is at 11 am, Marquez is at noon. The Cotto-Pacquiao press conference is also Monday in Beverly Hills but it is not open to the public. It is a media only event.

Gerardo (AZ)

Hey Dan can you just inform everyone that James Kirkland is still in jail. Someone's bound to ask sooner or later...

Dan Rafael
  (1:09 PM)

Thank you for the help.

Andres (Chula Vista, CA)

Whats next for Erislandy Lara?

Dan Rafael
  (1:09 PM)

Glad you asked. He was just added to the Mayweather-Marquez undercard. No word on whether he make TV.

John (Ohio)

DTM, with John Madden retired, I'm going to start campaigning ESPN to purchase the Madden Cruiser for you to use in lieu of airline tickets. Over time, it will have paid for itself. The Freak Cruiser!

Dan Rafael
  (1:10 PM)

I love it. If you pull that off, you get a seat on the cruiser.

Greg (Los Angeles)

When is LC going to be back in the ring? I was surprised he was not on a FNF in a comeback fight.

Dan Rafael
  (1:10 PM)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child. As I mentioned before, Joel Julio may return on Telemundo in October, but nothing is definite.

Ryan (Providence)

When they say a promoter won a card for $500,000 and that card has 3 fights on it, does that mean that the $500,000 is divided between the 6 fighters? Understanding percentage comes into play.

Dan Rafael
  (1:13 PM)

No. When a promoter wins a fight at puse bid he wins only promotional rights to that individual bout. For example, Gary Shaw won the purse bid for Bradley-Peterson for $575,000 last week. That $575,000 is divided under a fomula in the sanctioning body's rules that gives a pre-determined percentage to each figher. For example, in a straightforward WBC purse bid the champion would get 70 percent of a winning bid and the challenger 30 percent of the winning bid. Purse bids are called in mandatory situations when the sides either can't or refuse to make a deal with the other side. Then the fight goes to open auction and the promoter with the biggest bid gets the rights to the fight.

C.M. (Canads)

I think the freaks should pitch in on a lifetime supply of breath mints for poor Mrs. Juan Manuel Marquez...

Mark (Brooksville, Fla.)

We know you work tirelessly to keep the freaks well informed. I was wondering if you see a possible RAD anytime soon?

Dan Rafael
  (1:15 PM)

Well not this weekend and the next two weekends I will be on site for fights, so not then either. I'm sure as the fall moves along I'll get in a few more.

Tom (OH)

Has PBF been playing "bad guy" in public this time around? He as pretty disrespectful toward DLH, but I haven't heard much about it with JMM.

Dan Rafael
  (1:16 PM)

He acutally has cooled the trash talk. I haven't heard him diss Marauez at all that I can think of.

Christopher (Linz, Austria)

Obviously the Agbeko-Perez matchup is terrific, but do you think there is a real chance the winner gets Hasegawa, who is the ruler of the division?

Dan Rafael
  (1:17 PM)

No, because the IBF title, which the winner will have, is not recognized in Japan. There is almost no prayer of Hasegawa facing that winner.

Kent (St Catharines)

Do the Boxing Organizations actually have there rules written where fans can read them over? (website?) Or because they make them up as they go is it a more guarded secret then Area 51?

Dan Rafael
  (1:18 PM)

Off the top of my head, I know the WBO rules are available on its Web site. I think the WBC rules are also.

Dan Rafael
  (1:19 PM)

Yo wife, that would be the Rafael Cruiser.

Richard (Kendall Park, NJ)

Dan, When the Super six was first announced, I, like alot of people, were skeptical that it would get done. Now that we are closing in on the 1st round of fights, I'm feeling alot more confident that this could actually go smoothly. Your thoughts?

Dan Rafael
  (1:20 PM)

Well the the first two bouts on Oct. 17 will happen unless something happens to one of them training. And I believe Kessler and Ward will be fine this weekend and Nov. 21 will happen. Beyond that, who knows? You never know when a guy is coming off a loss what will happen.

Russ (Louisville)

How do you rate the undercard for the Mayweather fight ?

Dan Rafael
  (1:22 PM)

There are two excellent undercard fights but the lack of a fourth fight is terrible. Even if they move something up from the undercard it won't really be a notable bout. So while the two fights are excellent I am disappointed there is not a third strong fight too.

Rick (Marina)

Which is the most interesting fight for you out of the first rd of super six tourney?

Dan Rafael
  (1:22 PM)

Kessler-Ward.

Robbie (Denton, Tx)

Dan I am going to my first fight next weekend. Can you tell me what to expect on fight day and what it will be like in Vegas? Also should I hang out at the MGM all day ?

Dan Rafael
  (1:24 PM)

I hope you have fun. You'll feel the atmosphere. There will be a lot of people around, stands to buy shirts and prograsms and hats and stuff. Usually you'll see people gather around the press room entrance, where lots of boxing people are constantly going in and out of near the food court. I hope you have a chance to be there on Friday for the weigh in, which should be fun.

randy (nyc)

Is the general consensus amongst you professional sports analysts that PBF is going to convincingly beat JMM?I haven't talked to a person yet that agrees with my that JMM will win

Dan Rafael
  (1:25 PM)

I know nobody outright picking Marquez to win.

Tom (Reading, United Kingdom)

I have just been on Golden Boys webpage and it says Chris John is one of their fighters is this true?

Dan Rafael
  (1:26 PM)

Golden Boy has his American promotional rights.

Tom (Reading,United Kingdom)

When will we hear who Amir Khan will be fighting in his next fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:26 PM)

He's fighting Salita, probably Dec. 5 in the UK.

Chris (NY)

Which is the more likely upset tomorrow - Kessler or Ward?

Dan Rafael
  (1:27 PM)

I don't think either guy is getting upset. But if I HAD to pick one, I'd say Kessler.

Panama Lewis (FL)

I'm going to come clean after all these years. I gave Aaron Pryor a bottle mixed with my urine.

raoulg (brooklyn,ny)

Hey Dan who do you like abraham vs taylor? I like arthur's style but he hasnt fought anyone good i see taylor in an upset to win the tourney..just a hint of favortism

Dan Rafael
  (1:29 PM)

I definitely like Abraham in the fight. I think his chin and strength will wear Taylor down.

J-Nava (San francisco, ca)

I met andre ward a few times. He's a hell of a guy and a hell of a fighter. I'd love to see him win the entire tournament but I i'm not so sure he's rough and tough enough based on his early career knockdowns. Who has the best chance to beat him?

Dan Rafael
  (1:31 PM)

Most good fighters have been down. Trinidad was down all the time early in his career (and late, actually). Oscar was down a few times. Ward has not shown any problems in that department for a long time. And when he did get dropped (particularly hard by Darnell Boone -- I have that tape) he showed a lot of poise to recover. Andre is a class act. He's a gentleman and a terrific young fighter.

Greg (NJ)

D$, Do you ever drink your own urine beforehand to get pumped up for your marathon chat sessions? :)

Dan Rafael
  (1:32 PM)

No, but I do go for a Frappuchino from time to time.

Khalil (Atlanta, GA)

JMM and Vitali should get together so that once Vlad is done with the urine-soaked diapers wrapped around his hands, JMM can ring it out into a cup and drink it.

Dan Rafael
  (1:33 PM)

I wish I could figure that out.

Dan Rafael
  (1:34 PM)

He's already 32 and hasn't really fought anyone. I've seen him fight before. I don't view him as anything overwhelming, but the division is so bad you never know who may emerge.

Dan Rafael
  (1:34 PM)

Arum has nothing to do with the Calderon card. That is being promtoed by Peter Rivera's PR Best Boxing.

Gerardo (AZ)

It looks like urine a good mood today, Dan.

Dan Rafael
  (1:35 PM)

YES!!!!!!!!

Patrick (Florida)

DTM, I was watching ESPNEWS HD last night, and there is a little side bar that only comes on the HD version of the channel that says "On ESPN.com", and below it said "Dan Rafael Boxing Chat at noon". Didn't know if you knew about this, I was just glad to see the plug.

Dan Rafael
  (1:35 PM)

Cool. Didn't know that.

Matt H (Phx, AZ)

That comment from Khalil..although SICK...was funny.

Steve (NYC)

Why is B-Hop ranked when he is inactive for the entire year?

Dan Rafael
  (1:36 PM)

The general rule for me and rankings is one year. BHop hasn't been inactive for a year yet. But he may end up with a fight scheduled for January, in which case I would probably leave him in.

Adam (Seattle)

A few weeks back you said whoever won a purse bid can have a fight where ever they want... Instead of dealing with promoters why dont the networks just bid on the purses?

Dan Rafael
  (1:37 PM)

They are not registered promoters.

Upset PPV supporter (Bay Area)

Sup DTM...With the Soto vs. Valero fight less likely to be on the PAC/Cotto undercard, how does Top Rank justify pricing the PPv fight at $54.95 now? That undercard seems like garbage again!...I'll still buy the fight, but I guess I have to deal with that crap again....Love your insight!

Dan Rafael
  (1:39 PM)

It digusts me, but what can I do? The card is not strong at all right now. The main event is great, but the rest of the show is a disgrace. Montiel-Morel -- whatever. Who cares? Santos-Foreman is horrible. Gomez-Soto-Karras is a good fight but not a meaningful fight. I'm really disappointed in Top Rank, especially when Arum went out of his way to insist it would be a top notch card top to bottom. It isn't.

Ron (Bethel Ct)

Dan maybe I'm missing the article but what happened to the solis vs. Johnson fight Oct 10th???? I was looking forward to that fight

Dan Rafael
  (1:39 PM)

Check out today's blog.

Ron (Bethel, Ct)

Just got my tickets for the October 10th card in NYC!!! I think arum did a great job putting this card together. We got Junma, Gamboa, Solis, Johonson, Duddy, Korobov, Matriosyan, all on the same card!!! Kudos to Arum for bringing a great fight card over to the east coast. Curious if your thinking about attending this card?

Dan Rafael
  (1:41 PM)

I plan to be there. Solis-Johnson is off, but it's still a decent card with some interesting fighers on it.

Joe (OH)

DTM, would RJJ defeating Green for a minor cruiserweight belt mean anything regarding a potential RJJ-BHOP sequel since a belt would be on the line?

Dan Rafael
  (1:42 PM)

Doubtful. If they ever have a Jones-Hopkins rematch a belt won't mean a thing in that fight.

Dave (Alberta Canada)

Why is Bute not in the Super middle tourney??

Dan Rafael
  (1:42 PM)

Are we seriously going to go over that again?

C.M. (Canada)

Rank the three Arum myths, in order of bluster: 1) stadium fight, 2) Macau fight, 3) "spectacular" undercards...

Dan Rafael
  (1:43 PM)

What about a stadium fight in Macau with a spectacular undercard?

Rick, (Marina)

News for the freaks, Tecate will be offering the $25 ppv rebate with the purchase of a 12 pack.

Gerardo (Los Angeles)

Dan, I really enjoy the 24/7. It just seems that we're getting a genuine look at the real Marquez but Mayweather is just a caricature. Another reason to root for Marquez!

Dan Rafael
  (1:45 PM)

I tend to agree with you that Marquez comes off as more real person the way he is portrayed on 24/7.

Bolt (SD)

Do you know for a fact that Mayweather is in trouble w/ the IRS?

Dan Rafael
  (1:49 PM)

Public records state he owes the IRS about $6 millionish.

Mark (NY)

I was going to buy the Mayweather fight but I'll skip it so you wont have to shave your head.

Dan Rafael
  (1:50 PM)

He was down against Quartey and he was down very early in his career.

Marc (Malden, MA)

Just read the blog...my head is still spinning

Dan Rafael
  (1:51 PM)

Sorry.

Zim (Boston)

I'd rather see Brian Kenny's head get shaved. Dude's got a bushy hairdo!

Jonathan (New York, NY)

Dan, what's going on with Allan Green these days? His career seems to have lost momentum. I still think he can compete with anyone at 168, though.

Dan Rafael
  (1:51 PM)

He fights on ShoBox on Oct. 2.

jr (orlando)

ppv should be 29.99 or less. thats is one way to bring boxing back to popularity

Dan Rafael
  (1:52 PM)

How nice of you to dictate to the promoters.

Randy (Shanghai)

Is there a mandatory rematch clause if Marquez beats Mayweather?

Dan Rafael
  (1:53 PM)

My understanding is that there is no rematch clause for either guy.

Andres (Chula Vista, CA)

I realize that this may have been asked already, but did Abner Mares get pulled off of the Mayweather-Marquez card? If so, what happened? Was it too quick a turn around or something else?

Dan Rafael
  (1:54 PM)

Mares was penciled in but he had a fight a few weeks ago and after it was over he and his team decided not to rush back right away. He may have been a little nicked up.

Neal (Joliet, IL)

THe $55 for Oscar-Floyd was a dangerous precedent but I understood it. Using it for Pacquaio-Cotto (a great fight) is disturbing. Just Greed. Arum can rip UFC all he wants but they didn't jack up the price for their biggest card (UFC 100)

Dan Rafael
  (1:55 PM)

That was not the first $55 fight. There were some Tyson fights that were $55 in the heyday.

Eric (North Hollywood,CA)

Dan is Rigondeaux's opponent going to give him any challenge instead of the previous two chumps he fought?

Dan Rafael
  (1:56 PM)

His opponent is certainly a way more credible guy. He is vastly experienced compared to Rigondeaux's first two opponents.

Mike ((Visalia, CA))

Great job on Notebook, DR, it's what I look forward to on Friday mornings. Craig Goossen reported that Ward vs Kessler will take place in Oakland, CA.

Dan Rafael
  (1:57 PM)

Oakland has always been the place it was going to be, but nothing had been formal yet because of the upcoming bouts. Craig is the man. Next time you see him call him Gus.

Dan Rafael
  (2:00 PM)

Thanks. Hate to tell folks I told them so...

Metty (T.O.)

If Calzaghe EVER were to come out of retirement, do you think it would be against either Abraham or Froch if they won the tournament? That would be quite a European superfight!

Dan Rafael
  (2:00 PM)

If Joe ever decides to fight again I am sure he would look for whatever the biggest fight he could make.

Rick (Saint Paul, MN)

We're getting close to the end of the decade, will the outcomes of Pac-Man's and Mayweather's next fight effect your decision on fighter of the decade?

Dan Rafael
  (2:01 PM)

Obviously, it would go into it but more importantly would be the outcome of their fight with each other if it ever happens.

Brian (Brooklyn)

What happens when Cotto hits Pacman with a clean shot?

Dan Rafael
  (2:02 PM)

That's the question a lot of us have. Personally, if Cotto does land that clean shot, I think Manny is in big trouble.

Drew (Lexington, KY)

Is "Manny Shaquiao" gonna crack your top 10 super heavyweight rankings? Its funny that De La Hoya is retired and is still facing bigger guys than Mayweather ever will!

Dan Rafael
  (2:04 PM)

LOL!!

Dennis (Miami, FL )

i would of at least mix my urine with kool aid.

E ((Omaha))

D$ - Before we hit the boxing part of the chat. Little tip of the hat to Derek Jeter on tying the great Lou Gehrig atop the all time Yankee hits list. Even as a Red Sox fan, gotta give it up for Jeter

Dan Rafael
  (2:06 PM)

Jeter is the man. One of my all-time favorite players. I covered him in the minor leagues and he was a class act back then in the early 90s. Still is. Great ballplayer.

The Critics (Jersey)

sorry to let you and your followers know this... Cotto doesn't hit hard just adds his punches up well over the fight

Dan Rafael
  (2:06 PM)

And I assume you've been hit by Cotto you doofus?

Keith H (Seattle)

Dan, the Freaks seem reasonably well behaved today. Or is the thought of Banishment scaring the pee out of them?

Dan Rafael
  (2:08 PM)

They're not really. You don't see the stuff I don't (can't) post. The IQ of some of these people is less than a piece of toast.

Keith H (Seattle)

Hey, the toast might get insulted.

Richard (Kendall Park, NJ)

Dan, Cotto is a vicious body puncher. I think that's his key to victory against Pacman. Slow the smaller man down, break him down and then put him down....

Dan Rafael
  (2:10 PM)

I agree that hitting Manny's body will be important to at least make him slow down a little (and, of course, drop his hands a little).

carlos ((houston, tx))

Do you think Sergio Mora can be a good boxing analyst?

Dan Rafael
  (2:10 PM)

I really do. When I heard him on FNF not too long ago sitting in on a fight he was really good.

ctcatz (Connecticut)

Whats your prediction for the Chad Dawson Glen Johnson Fight???

Dan Rafael
  (2:14 PM)

I haven't made the official prediction but you have to like Dawson. Johnson is a warrior and will give it what he has, but I think Dawson fought one of his worst fights against Johnson the first time and still eked it out. I think Dawson will be better this time around. Not sure Glen can be much better than he was in the first fight.

Bakari (Jersey City, NJ)

I see there is an MMA Live on Espn.com. Pretty good show. I can't fathom why there wasn't a boxing show created before this MMA show. From me through you to your bosses: Wtf?!

Dan Rafael
  (2:15 PM)

There should be a boxing show. I have no idea why we don't have one. It seems like a no-brainer.

Walter (Albuquerque, NM)

While commenting on the Pacquiao/Cotto press conference, you said that Pacquiao/Mayweather is the fight, fight fans want. The hype might be bigger, but why would that be a better fight in the ring then Cotto/Mayweather?

Dan Rafael
  (2:16 PM)

Not necessarily. The fight I want to see most is Pacman-Mayweather if they both take care of business this fall.

Joe (NJ)

Which town did you cover Jeter?

Dan Rafael
  (2:17 PM)

When he played for the Double-A Albany-Colonie Yankees.

R! (Yay Area)

What do you think of the prospect Mike Dallas JR? Have you seen him fight before?

Dan Rafael
  (2:18 PM)

I have seen him fight. I have seen him on tape and I was at his fight in April on the Williams-Winky undercard. Looks like a skilled guy with zero pop.

Jeff (Phoenix)

D$,Who is the BEST Yankee of all time? Not your favorite but the best?

Dan Rafael
  (2:18 PM)

Babe Ruth. Hands down.

Brett (Northern Virginia)

Hey Dan,Here's a silly question for you...I've got some good friends that are pretty damn good young amateur fighters. How do guys get picked up by promoters such as a Golden Boy, Top Rank, etc.?

Dan Rafael
  (2:19 PM)

Usually a manager will come to them and tell them about the fighter. They'll meet the fighter. Watch tape of the fighter. Ask around, etc...

Dan Rafael
  (2:19 PM)

A lot of promoters will also go to big amateur events like the Olympics or world championships to scout guys.

Dan Rafael
  (2:19 PM)

Perfect!

Dan Rafael
  (2:20 PM)

Or perhaps the trash compactor or Rancor pit.

Craig (Mission Viejo, CA)

any thoughts on the Klitchko-Arreola undercard?

Dan Rafael
  (2:22 PM)

Nothing special.

carlos (houston,tx)

has an opponent for israel vazquez been named?

Dan Rafael
  (2:23 PM)

Not yet.

Dan Rafael
  (2:25 PM)

Thanks for chatting Freaks (well most of you). Hope you enjoy all the fights this weekend and have a chance to check out the notebook and new blogs this week. Talk to you next week from Las Vegas from the Mayweather-Marquez fight. Peace.
