Fantasy Sports w/Eric Karabell

Eric Karabell
  (3:01 PM)

Hello all and welcome to another fantasy sports chat session... one week in the books for football, and still a few more left in baseball. I'd imagine lots of football questions today, however... let's get going!

eric b (ct)

is anthony gonzalez worth picking up and storing on the bench at this point? i'm in a 14-team league and every position is thin.

Eric Karabell
  (3:03 PM)

You know, you're the first person who has asked that type of question recently. Absolutely! The guy was a sleeper for many and this injury shouldn't ruin his season. He'll just miss between 2 and 6 weeks. I wouldn't drop someone of great value to get him, but certainly he's someone to stash for later. Smart move...

Kevin (Seahawk nation)

Is Hasselbeck for real or the Rams that awful? combination of both?

Eric Karabell
  (3:05 PM)

I think it's a combination, really. I did like Hasselbeck a bit for this season, but his problem is health. We wouldn't expect him to be hurt already. And he did make mistakes in Week 1. The bigger issue is the Rams. They are bad. Really bad. I thought building the line was wise, but it didn't play well. It's going to limit what Steven Jackson can do. Then again, it's only one week... but I do think we'll be discussing this all season.

Brian (TX)

At this point in the season would trade away Kevin Walter for FWP? Thanks for the input.

Eric Karabell
  (3:06 PM)

Well, just forget Week 1 happened for both Walter and Fast Willie Parker. Walter should play this week, and he remains a worthy WR3. Parker is going to be fine, I think. I know I'm alone there, but that's OK! I'd rather have Parker this season.

Vince (LA)

Opponent is starting J. Campbell, do I start S. Moss or E. Royal?

Eric Karabell
  (3:07 PM)

I love questions like this! Why would it matter what your opponent does? I'd think Royal is the better play over Moss regardless, but even if Campbell can summon the strength for a decent game, we projected a Redskins WR to have a big game ... and it was not Moss. Play your best guys, regardless of what your opponent does.

Dave (vt)

Will Schaub bounce back this week? I am thinking about playing Favre over him but i dont know if the vikes will even have to throw the ball.

Eric Karabell
  (3:10 PM)

See, that's my thinking as well. We projected Favre first at QB, which is surprising. In our rankings, which have been posted, he was top-10. I think that's more fair. Even if Favre throws only 20 times, that could be 3 or 4 touchdowns. I would use him over Schaub... but I do think Schaub bounces back OK.

Colin (Little Rock)

QB question: Schaub and Cassel are on my roster, and both make me nervous. Could pick up Edwards, Favre, or Flacco right now. Thoughts?

Eric Karabell
  (3:11 PM)

Well, I don't think Cassel really belongs in the conversation until we know he'll play. We don't. And I don't think Edwards belongs with Favre or Flacco. Let's be a bit careful on overrating Flacco, too. Nice quarterback, but he might have had his best matchup. I'd go Favre first among this group.

Steve (NY)

What is your take on Tomlinson, Eric?

Eric Karabell
  (3:12 PM)

I ranked LT No. 20 at RB, so obviously I think he will play, and play well enough to be a RB2. I was kinda alone in that line of thinking, it seems. One ranker left him unranked. I could see that, too. I think what really stands out to me is that LT is hurt again, and this is becoming a trend, not just "he gets hurt once in a while." I wouldn't be buying low on him.

Eric L (MN)

In both leagues I play LT...Im wondering if he will even see the field this week... I read reports saying he was already a game-time-decision for Sunday. Thoughts?

Eric Karabell
  (3:13 PM)

Yes, and it seems awfully early in the week for anyone to already be a game-time decision. Odd.

Lafitte the Golden Retriever (New Orleans)

Thoughts on this trade....give up Ronnie Brown and Kevin Walter for Devin Hester and Derrick Ward? fyi...i already have caddy.

Eric Karabell
  (3:15 PM)

Not a big fan of Ronnie timeshare Brown, to be honest. Walter should play this week. Still, don't you have to take that side of the trade? Hester doesn't seem better than Walter to me, not yet, and Ward is pretty much in the same spot he was last season, no? Brown should still be better than that.

Mike (Boston)

Hey Eric. Did you see the Panthers game? How did J.Stew look health-wise? Is he going to cut into Williams touches a lot?

Eric Karabell
  (3:16 PM)

I saw the entire Panthers game, though I would call it the "Eagles" game! Anyway, Stewart did look very good, healthier than I thought he would be. Doesn't mean he'll have a big game this week, nor that he won't be too hurt to play in a week or two, but something to keep in mind. Yes, I think he cuts into Williams' touches... but Williams can still run wild with 15 touches.

Bryan (New Orleans)

How far has LT2 fallen? I get sick every time I think about how I took him in round 1

Eric Karabell
  (3:17 PM)

Little too early to panic... just one game.

Sam Shrift (New Philadelphia, PA)

Hi Eric.Dallas Clark didn't do much for me last week and I had John Carlson on the bench who got nice points. Which one should I start this week?

Eric Karabell
  (3:18 PM)

I ranked each very well, but Clark was a few spots better. Both are very good; might want to look into a trade while Carlson is hot.

Bill (Here)

Should i start LenDale white over forte?

Eric Karabell
  (3:19 PM)

I wouldn't. Forte has one below average game and everyone's running away! Amazing! Trade him to me!

Mike (NY)

Hey Eric. What do you think Percy Harvin's currently fantasy impact is? And what do you think it will be going forward?

Eric Karabell
  (3:20 PM)

I think it's going to be tough to recommend Harvin as a safe WR3 anytime soon. Surely he's got speed and will have opportunities, but I would worry that the Vikings are going to run so much and keep Favre throwing short passes that someone like Harvin will have trouble scoring TDs.

ryan (myrtle beach)

Matt Ryan went to Gonzo in a lot of situations that would have been Rowdy Roddy time last year. I know it's only one week but do you expect Gonzo to help, hurt or have little affect on White's value?

Eric Karabell
  (3:21 PM)

I think it's still too early to tell. It could have been the game plan in that matchup, and it could totally change this week. White will be fine.

Jordan (There)

How do you feel about M. Lynch this season, with how Freddy Jackson played week 1?

Eric Karabell
  (3:22 PM)

I think Lynch starts in Week 4 at Miami. But Jackson is looking good and this could really be a timeshare.

Sookie Stackhouse (Bon Temps, LA)

Help me Eric, your vampiric highness, ah beg of you!! Ah ask again: the Pats, they say, are fixin to light up the Jets D and serve notice. Shall I go east and get Atlanta D vs Carolina, or go west and get me that AZ D vs Jacksonville!

Eric Karabell
  (3:23 PM)

I have seen that show... very interesting. I'd take Atlanta. I don't see how I could trust the Cardinals defense...ever. I do expect David Garrard, who got criticized this week, to play much better. Upset!

Chris (Denver)

Am I jumping the gun by dropping Coles for someone like Justin Gage or Chansi Stuckey. I love that name. "Chansi"!

Eric Karabell
  (3:24 PM)

Well, who doesn't love it? I think it's too early to drop any safe, veteran receiver just because of a bad week. I don't have high hopes for Coles, though... but I don't think Gage or Stuckey are great options either. I'd stick with Coles. Palmer should get better.

Ryan (PA)

Eric, I just can't decide who to play on my roster. Fitz is about the only certainty as is I guess TO. Which 2 RB and 1 WR/RB would you play this week out of Kevin Smith, LT, Leon, Fred Jackson, Harvin, Marshall, Meachem and Crayton?

Eric Karabell
  (3:26 PM)

Well, Kevin Smith would play for me, and if we get good news on LT during the week, he's playing. I don't think we'll get good news, though. So Fred Jackson over LT. And Brandon Marshall is safe to play. This is a good team...can't complain about it!

Pete (NJ)

TRADE HELP! PPR league - Andre Johnson for Slaton and Mason. Who wins?

Eric Karabell
  (3:26 PM)

Probably the Slaton/Mason trade, but it also depends on who you have to drop to make room. The best player in the deal is Johnson, but if you need the depth...

Jonathan (Chicago)

Thoughts on he a legit RB2 or just a matchup/flex play? Do you see him breaking out this year?

Eric Karabell
  (3:27 PM)

I don't think we know what McFadden is yet. I think he will be a RB2 very soon, possibly by next week. Really, give him 20 carries in a nice matchup this week and it all changes, because he would do well.

Ray (SF)

Would you value a receiver that received a lot of looks from his QB, or one that can caught a TD in week one? Bennett or Burleson?

Eric Karabell
  (3:28 PM)

TDs come and go... look for targets. I'd probably say Burleson though. I doubt Bennett gets 13 targets again!

Paul (Tampa)

Would you go with Caddy or Jamal Lewis?

Eric Karabell
  (3:29 PM)

I'd go Caddy. Hey, he looked good running the ball, and should have a decent game. I can't say that about Lewis.

jonathan (Tulsa)

EK, I'm not a guy that's panicking on Forte, but I definitely can't afford my top RB to drop another egg against that nasty Steelers D. Is Jamal Lewis against the Broncos a better play this week?

Eric Karabell
  (3:30 PM)

Even against the mighty Steelers, I would still go with Forte. It would take a lot more than that for me to use Lewis over Forte. Expect Forte to catch a few passes, get enough yards to matter.

Rob (SD)

Do people ever send you pieces of there fantasy winnings? These people can't make decisions by themselves.

Eric Karabell
  (3:30 PM)

No. And no comment!

J.B. (Dunmore, PA)

Isn't the general idea on trade questions that if you are getting the best player in the deal, it is a good deal?

Eric Karabell
  (3:31 PM)

Most of the time, but I admit there are times when I really need a particular stat (in baseball, I guess) or a position in baseball or football and don't mind dealing for a bit of depth. Depends on who the players are really. But I have dealt the best player in deals before.

Ken (San Diego)

There's a Fantasy Sports Writers Association? Seriously??

Eric Karabell
  (3:31 PM)

You'd be amazed...

Pierre Thomas (NO)

When am I coming back and will I get my job back from that crazy Mike Bell?

Eric Karabell
  (3:32 PM)

I think Thomas is going to play this very week, and I expect Bell to go to the bench, maybe pick up 10 carries if he's lucky. Thomas is the No. 1 RB on this team, and he says he'll play. I ranked him accordingly.

Jarrod (Austin, TX)

I know that Reggie Bush didn't do too much with the touches that he was given in Week 1, but for my flex spot do I stick with him, or give Leon Washington a shot in a .5 PPR league. (I also have Thomas Jones as my RB2)

Eric Karabell
  (3:33 PM)

Doesn't matter to me that you already have T.Jones active. I still think Bush is the better option than Washington for this, and most, weeks.

Joel (MI)

I am not going to sit him by any means, but should expectations for Brady be tempered a bit from that Jet defense ? I was not impressed early on by his pass protection.

Eric Karabell
  (3:34 PM)

Well, yes and no. For one, I expect Brady to play better. He's also facing a better defense. I don't want to overreact to what happened Monday, but it was almost a really disappointing performance. I think he'll do very well against the Jets, even if the defense is improved, which it is.

Paul (Buffalo)

Eric, do you see Howell and Frasor closing in 2010?

Eric Karabell
  (3:35 PM)

Baseball! Wow, it took more than half the chat to get a baseball question! Neither close in 2010. I assume the Rays and Jays find closing help from the outside.

e. graham (tampa dog house)

am i already droppable for the season, especially given the reports that i volunteered to stay on the sidelines when it was my turn for carries?

Eric Karabell
  (3:35 PM)

Wow, if that is true, I'd like to see it. But I wouldn't cut him quite yet...

Bryant (Michigan)

What happened to Felix Jones last week? I started him assuming he'd get more touches, will we expect a larger workload moving forward?

Eric Karabell
  (3:37 PM)

Thigh injury, but it appears he will play this week. I admit I was high on him for Week 1, but if injury comes a knockin', not much you can do. I don't think we can call him brittle yet. Not yet.

Tim (FL)

Are you a believer in Juan Uribe?

Eric Karabell
  (3:38 PM)

Yeah, it makes no sense what he's doing, but I believe. Eligible at 2B, SS and 3B, he's hitting much better at home - makes no sense - and hitting much better against RHP - also makes no sense. Use him while he's hot.

Richard (Greensboro, NC)

What's your thought on Texans this week. That Titans run D looked good, don't know if it's a good week to start Slaton.

Eric Karabell
  (3:39 PM)

Poor Slaton has a tough matchup again. No, not a good week to use him as a safe RB1, but we all had him in the teens..

dave (boston)

EK -- start LT, or go with Sproles, Freddy Jackson, or Leon Washington? thanks

Eric Karabell
  (3:40 PM)

Well, it's a bit early in the week to judge LT, but I'd say Fred Jackson is a worthy play.

Bill Compton (Bon Temps, LA)

Rather not go back to the well again, sir, but youve shown a bent for kindness to vampire folk. Is NOLA's own Robert Meacham worth stashing on the bench in deeper keeper leagues? Or is he a drop candidate if one finds a better option?

Eric Karabell
  (3:41 PM)

I'd say all the Saints WRs after Colston are kinda in the same boat. One week it will be Meachem, the next Devery... we'll never know. And Moore is still the No. 2 WR there, we'd assume. I think Brees will spread the wealth. And yes, all those guys would then be drop candidates.

Matt (MA)

Shaun Hill or Jake The Snake?

Eric Karabell
  (3:42 PM)

I don't know how anyone can recommend Delhomme until further notice. I like Hill for this week, but still had 14 QBs better...

Doug (Pensacola)

Someone in my league dropped Anthony Gonzalez. Is it worthwhile to drop Meachem for him or should I hold out hope Meachem may produce later this year?

Eric Karabell
  (3:43 PM)

If you don't think you'll need to use Meachem anytime soon - and I doubt you will - then get Gonzalez. Panicked owner might have needed the room... and we also might find out that the knee injury is more serious... but for now, go get Gonzo.

Keith (Boston)

Which NE running back has the best chance to lead the charge? Maroney didn't look half bad.

Eric Karabell
  (3:44 PM)

He did not look half bad... or by the same principle, half good? He looked fine. Doesn't mean he gets enough touches to do something, but certainly he's a player of interest...

Joe (Rochester)

Please rank these split-time RBs: Derrick Ward, Mike Bell, Ahmad Bradshaw

Eric Karabell
  (3:46 PM)

I don't think Bell is really a split-time RB... when Thomas returns, it's his job. If Thomas doesn't play this week, Bell is first. If he does play, Bell is third. I like Ward and Bradshaw for this and most weeks.

Colin Cowherd says good looks helps QB's because it gives them confidence. Wall Street Journal just rated Matt Ryan the NFL's most handsome QB. Does this make him a must-have in all fantasy league formats??

Eric Karabell
  (3:46 PM)

You're kidding, right?

Mark (Philly)

I think I blew it in my draft by taking SJax 10th overall. I kept hearing about their revamped line, run-first coach, etc... think he'll turn it around? I kind of don't even want to start him unless he does.

Eric Karabell
  (3:47 PM)

You don't think it's a bit premature to say Jackson was a bad pick? I do. I'll be starting him this week in a 2-RB league... my other options are LT and D.Ward. Yikes.

Scott (South)

How do you answer these questions? Are you in CUBE WORLD just typing away or do you have help, ie...someone feeding you the good questions? Just curious.

Eric Karabell
  (3:48 PM)

Cube world, all alone... I see 10 questions at a time... get to as many as I can...

Kaleb (Fargo)

What are your thoughts on Steve Smith? I have just traded for him. I gave up Portis and Colston for Smith and Ryan Grant

Eric Karabell
  (3:48 PM)

Seems like a good trade to me...

JOE ((NY))

What are your thoughts on Moss as the #1 receiver in fantasy?

Eric Karabell
  (3:49 PM)

I think that's where I had him a month ago... so my thoughts are pretty good so far...

Westbrook for Forte, I must know

Eric Karabell
  (3:49 PM)

I think Westbrook this week.

Michael (Milwaukee)

Why does Thomas Jones look better at 33 than LT at 30? too much wear and tear?

Eric Karabell
  (3:50 PM)

Age has only something to do with performance. Maybe it's luck. Jones is healthy and running OK- he actually wasn't great for most of that first game. LT just looks old now. It's sad. But it's not about age. Portis isn't old, but he looks it on the field. It's about being abused... Larry Johnson isn't old, etc...

Rob ((VA))

Berry has Jamal Lewis at 17, you have him at 41...that's a pretty big difference! So what are you seeing that Berry's missing?

Eric Karabell
  (3:51 PM)

It sure is! He likes the matchup. I understand why. I just think Lewis is a risk, but I admit that ranking is a bit harsh. Will move him up some on Friday. The Browns also have other RBs they want to get the ball.

AJ (Baltimore)

What do u think of Phillip Rvers against the ravens? He is my starter but i think no way will it end well against that defense.

Eric Karabell
  (3:52 PM)

Why not? Was "that defense" so great in Week 1? Not really. I think if Rivers is your starter, you leave him active and hope he gets you 20 points.

kit (mpls)

If its isnt age, at this rate how long can we have AP till?

Eric Karabell
  (3:53 PM)

Probably no later than when he turns 30!

Nick (Missouri)

Hey Eric, what are your thoughts on Donnie Avery?

Eric Karabell
  (3:53 PM)

Without pass protection, there's not much Avery can do.. he can't throw the ball to himself.

Jarrod (Austin, TX)

Wow, I'd never had a question answered until today. I just wanted to say thanks for your time.

Eric Karabell
  (3:54 PM)

Well thanks for writing!

Steve (Cleveland)

LT or McFadden at flex this week? Turner and (gulp) Benson already penciled in

Eric Karabell
  (3:54 PM)

Man, Benson owners still don't like him! I'd say for now it's McFadden until we know more on LT. I don't know if he'll play or not. Nobody does.

KG (Boston)

Aaron Rodgers will finish 3rd among all QBs behind Brees and Brady. 30 TDs easily. Book it.

Eric Karabell
  (3:55 PM)

I agree. The case can be made - and I should have made it in the KaraBlog when I was thinking about it two weeks ago - that Rodgers is statistically better than Peyton Manning.

Vince (NYC)

Buzzer Beater-- Campbell or Romo ? Owen Daniels or Heath Milller ?

Eric Karabell
  (3:56 PM)

Puh-leeze. Romo over Campbell. And probably Daniels, but I could see both sides of that one...

Sean (Boston)

Cuddyer having himself a game for me in my fantasy baseball playoffs, alright! Thats about it... Thanks for all your help this season!

Eric Karabell
  (3:57 PM)

Cuddyer having a very good season... enjoy him the final two weeks as he plays first base regularly.. I have Cuddyer in a h2h playoff league as well. Glad I took the chance!

Do you think the Rams will be well prepared for the skins and limit Portis' numbers since the head coach is very familiar with them?

Eric Karabell
  (3:58 PM)

I think Portis has a very nice game...

Buzzer (Beater)

Garrard or Sanchez?

Eric Karabell
  (3:58 PM)

Alex (MO)

Schaub or Hill?

Eric Karabell
  (3:59 PM)

I chose Hill... but all the others took Schaub. I see both arguments. It is too early to give up on Schaub...

Eric Karabell
  (3:59 PM)

OK, that is all the time I have been given for this week. Thanks for the questions and have a great day... more chats coming Thursday... good luck in baseball and in football Week 2, and don't panic! Adios...
