Hello chatters. The Chase is here. Yes, I made my fearless predictons today. So I know yours are coming. Let me here it.
Do you think Kyle Busch's missing the Chase will compel NASCAR to change the points system?
No. If Mark Martin had missed the Chase, they might have felt compelled to change it. But I don't expect any changes.
Who do you think has the best chance to win the Sprint Cup Championship this year?
As I boldly stated in my annual predictions column today, I'm going with Jeff Gordon. The Chase owes him one. Really, it owes him two.
I know you are a NASCAR analyst but if you could win any championship what would it be? World Series, Sprint Cup, Superbowl, Stanley Cup...Etc
I played baseball as a kid, so I grew up wanting to win the World Series.
Where can I see your annual predictions for the outcome of the Chase? Thanks
The ESPN.com NASCAR page. Thanks.
Just like Dale fans blamed Eury jr for everything we blame Steve Addington for Kyle missing the chase. Will Gibbs fire Addington?
Ansolutely not. Steve has done a great with Kyle, on and off the track.
I know you picked Gordon but JJ always has to be in the discussion. Is this the year though that they don't pull it out in the end, things just dont seem to be clicking like they usually are at this point
JJ wil be in the hunt, no question. But they never have entered the Chase this cold. His average finish in the last four races is 20th.
TB whats up. lets say JJ doesnt have a shot to win his 4th in a row, who would you rather see win the title...Jeff or Mark?
JJ does hav a shot, but most NASCAR fans would love to see Martin win it. He's the obvious sentimental pick. He also would gain huge national attention by becoming the first over-50 competitor to win a major sports title.
Terry, In your opinion, did the twelve best drivers make the chase? If you could have added and/or subtracted, who would you have in and out?Also...with all the discussion of who is hot right now, should we be hearing more "Jimmie Johnson is the Prohibitive favorite"?
Denny is hotter than anyone right now. No, the best 12 drivers didn't make the Chase if Kyle isn't in it. Kenseth probably ranks among the 12 best, also, but didn't have the equipment this year.
Terry, what do you think of the 2010 NASCAR race schedule?
One word: BORING. No significant changes at a time when some shake-ups would do wonders to increase interest. The biggest change is adding a truck race at Pocono. Please, spare us.
How do you feel about Denny Hamlin's chances in the chase? Nobody has scored more points over the last 10 races, and several chase tracks, namely New Hampshire, Martinsville, and Phoenix provide opportunities for wins on flat tracks where Hamlin is particularly strong. He has also led many laps at Talladega; is the darkhorse, or is the Hendrick gang too strong?
I expect Denny to do well, but I don't think he can overcome the Hendrick powerhouse trio.
Isn't there something drastically wrong with the points system when Kyle is out and 4 drivers who didn't win a race are in?
What's wrong is not enough points for winning. It should be the most important thing, but it isn't.
With Kyle Busch out of the chase what can Nascar do to make the races interesting?
Kyle still is racing, and probably will win one or two down the stretch. The Chase doesn't need Kyle to be interesting. It just needs close competition to the end.
Hey Terry, where do you think Mark Martin will wind up in the final standings?
I have him finishing second for the fifth time in his career.
If the chase drivers were asked who they would like to see win the championship, without picking themselves, would anybody NOT pick mark martin? I say he gets 10 votes with Carl picking himself anyway, and mark picking Jeff
Everyone would pick Mark. Heck, Mark might even pick Mark.
Could Nascar come up with a "promoters provisional" or some other idea to include Kyle in the chase?
No, but they could make a Win-Your'e-In rule, guaranteeing a playoff spot to any driver who wins a race in the regular seasion, as long as he finishes in the top 20 in the standings.
How much do you expect ticket sales and tv ratings to drop as a result of Kyle Busch not being in the chase?
Not at all.
i would agree that jeff gordon has been effected the harshest with the new system. he has remained professional and humble but i know he feels the same.
Sure he does. But he's been a pro about it and never complained. He's built up some good karma.
How do you think Juan Montoya will do in the chase?
OK, but I don't see him contending for the title. They have to race more aggressively now, something they avoided all season.
What about Kasey? Do you think he's primed to be in the top 3 or 4?
I doubt it because he has that lame-duck thing going. He's racing a Dodge, but his team is switching to Ford next year. Not a good situation to get all the support he needs in the Chase.
Think the likes of Kyle Busch or Clint Bowyer put anyone in the chase in the wall out of angst in the coming weeks?
No. These guys are pros. This is Saturday night at the dirt track.
What changes will Gibbs make on the #18 to make sure that Kyle has better cars for next season?
The change they need to make is cutting back on Kyle's racing schedule, and they will. He isn't racing the full NW sked next year.
TERRRY!! Well I predicted 2 winners in a row for you,how about a third?? I got Kurt Busch winning this week, looking for 3 in a row.......
You're on a roll Mooky. I need your help at the blackjack table.
How could Tryson and Waltrip have so much disrespect to Kurt and Roger to announce him leaving the #2 now? Why didn't they wait until after the season?
It's very difficult to keep these things a secret. People see guys going in different shops and word gets out. Then you're forced to admit it.
Do you ever get tired of answering questions about Kyle Busch?
I think it's good for the sport that people are passionate about Kyle, whether they love him or hate him. I also want to point out that Kyle showed the utmost dignity and class Saturday night when he failed to make the Chase.
Do you think Bobby Labonte deserves a top ride or is he over the hill?
I think Mark Martin's year gives old guys like Bobby a chance at getting a better ride late in their careers.
We are huge Kyle Busch fans and just devasated that Kyle isn't in the chase. Is Nascar as disappointed as we Kyle Busch fans are?
NASCAR oficials probably wish Kyle was in the playoff because he generates excitement. But it isn't like he's gone. He's still racing every week, and probably will win a couple.
Chances Kahne runs a Bill Elliott Ford Budweiser 9 scheme next year?
I imagine they'll have a retro theme for a race of two, but not the whole season.
You and everybody else never give Tony Stewart credit for anything. He's had a better season than anybody else, and I know he's going to win the championship! Why is it so hard for you to say Tony Stewart without choking?
"Tony Stewart." There. I just said it. I didn't choke. Tony's great. He's the surprise of the year with how well he's done on his new deal.
Do rate Richmond Sat. night as the best race of the year? If not which race do you think was the best of 09?
The Dega race in the spring was quite a show, but Richmond was great. RIR is the way more tracks should be. It's the perfect size for these cars, and 400 laps is the perfect length. Any new track that's built should follow that pattern.
Hello Terry, Has there ever been this many different teams (8) represented in the Chase???????
I believe you're right on that Mark, and that's a good thing for everyone. The more teams the better.
I've never seen Jeff Gordon so happy with a 3rd place as sat at Richmond. Why was he so happy after fighting so hard with Denny?
Because he knows his car is running well and he sincerely believes his team is capable of winning the championship.
Do you know why most tracks are shaped like a D? Why are more tracks not shaped like an egg or a zero?
The D shape puts more space between pit road and the track. There are a couple of egg-shaped tracks _ Darlington and Gateway.
TB, who is the bigger surprise Chaser -- Montoya or Vickers? Would you have guessed either would be in it at the beginning of the year?
I thought Vickers had a real shot because I could see that team was improving. Montoya was a bit of an unknown because of the merger with DEI, but it has worked out well for him.
if kyle busch picks up multiple wins during the chase will that ensure changes to points sytem?
No, but if enough fans comlain about it, that might do it.
With the trend to older 50 Nascar drivers will we see Rudd, DJ, Ward Burton, Rusty, Spencer, Marlin back in Sprint cup in the coming years?
Not happening. Mark is anomaly. On the contrary, I think we'll see fewer drivers race at that age because they make enough money they don't have to keep racing.
Since RPM is merging with yates, where will HOF racing go this time? Does Bobby Labonte stay with them or does he go look for a better ride?
Bobby will go where he can get the best ride. That may be somewhere else than HOF.
With RPM releasing Sorenson from the 43 next season where do you think he will end up?
He'll be fortunate if he gets a Cup ride in 2010.
Did you notice the two "mystery" cautions that NASCAR threw when Kenseth was in danger of going a lap down....twice. Didnt see any debris on tv. Think they were trying to keep the bubble race as interesting as possible?
It's the usual conspiracy theory stuff. Who knows?
Speaking of money, I haven't kept up with sponsor dedication to teams this year. What is the state of NASCAR financially and how has fan turnout been this year (% /-)
Attendance is down about 15 percent, something that is happening across all sports in this economy. Most sponsors are staying, but some of them want to get a reduced rate.
will lance be back with jr next yr or will somebody else be a top the pitbox
Depends on what they do in the last 10 races.
Do you think Henrick might try out some new drivers in the #88 over the last 10 races?
Not a chance in you know where.
I realize it is not going away but I think the Chase is a stupid idea. Use the full season to determine the champion. Do any drivers/teams privately agree with me?
Not they don't Neither do I. The Chase has added tons of interest and given sponsors far more exposure than they would have gotten without it. Every pro sport has a playoff. Sometimes that means the team with the best record doesn't win the title.
Do you know why NASCAR driver salaries are not made public?
Because they don't have to. These aren't franchises like NFL and MLB teams. NASCAR doesn't have union that is part of a collective bargaining agreement.
Do you believe Kyle will help Denny to win the championship or is blood thicker than water and Kyle will be helping Kurt?
You have to help your teammate first. JGR is paying his salary, not his brother.
Who has been a bigger disappointment - Stremme or Sorenson? Are they destined to have careers like Casey Atwood? I think a team needs to bring back Buckshot Jones.
Wow. Someone in Denmark cares about this? Hmmm. But that's like asking which team is worse _ the Natonals or the Royals. Does it matter? As far as their destiny, I wouldn't count on either of them reaching racing stardom any time soon.
Terry, will RPM be considered a satellite team of Roush like Yates was????? Sharing technology and such.
They will share everything. For the most part, it one big eight-car team.
Are you more supprised at Kyle missing the chase or Dale Jr's lack of performance over the season?
Kyle missing the Chase.
Hey Terry, do you have a feel for how the Mustang is developing?
Ford is reay to go on this, but the new COT body will be used in only a few NW races next year.
i think brad keselowski moving to penske instead of waiting another year for the 5 car, is the biggest mistake he could make. do you think he's being impatient.
No, I think he did the right thing. He waited long enough and he's racing for a quality organization.
Do you see any significant changes in the schedule for next year?
There aren't any significant changes. That's the problem. Maybe next year in Kentucky gets a date and Kansas get a scond race. But I liked to see some chances in the Chase races.
Henrick technically has 5 cars in the chase. I thought Nascar came up with the 4 team rule to stop that. What happened?
Stewart Haas is a separate organization that uses Hendrick equipment. One of many alliances in NASCAR these days.
Gotta run folks. Off to do NASCAR Now. I'll discuss my fearless predictions for the Chase. Tune in at 5 p.m ET. I'm out. Peace.
