Late start... my bad... fire away.
At the end of last season, the computers had the PAC-10 as the 4th strongest conference. So far this year they're on pace for first place. Where do you think the PAC-10 ranks in overall strength, and do you think the talent is a little top-heavy?
That will be a great question after this weekend... At the beginning of the season, just like everyone else, I had the Pac-10 No. 3...
Do the WSU QB moves make them instantly better or worse?
I think better.Pick a guy and then go with him, particularly if he's a young guy who has a few years to learn and improved.Lopina is a senior. He had his shot. Lobbestael and Tuel will battle for the future, so the Cougs might as well get started on that.
Does BYU have a difficult enough schedule to be considered for the NC game if they run the table?
If BYU is the only unbeaten team, my guess is the Cougars will be in.If BYU is among a bunch of 1-loss teams, no.If you are a BYU fan, you should root just as hard for every team on your schedule... Oklahoma, FSU and, of course, the MWC.
Will Pete Carroll make Corp the started again if he plays and beats Washington, or is he just a filler until Barkley is ready to go?
Ah... that's the interesting question.Say Corp goes out and beats Washington 40-something, throwing for three TDs and running for another. How do you bench him?Still... it seems like Carroll and Qb coach Jeremy Bates are in love with Barkley's talent... if I were giving odds, I'd say Barkley goes against Washington State on Sept. 26.
Why a score of 24-17 in the ASU-ULM game? ULM is athletic but do you really think they'll keep it that close?
I think the Sun Devils D will have a good day, but there are still issues on offense.Expect a mistake -- or two -- to give the Warhawks some points...And I bet Erickson probably will try to win without completely opening his playbook.
Ted, what are your thoughts on the Ore-Utah game? Who do you have in that one?
I've got the Ducks... and you Boise folks should root for me to be right.I think Oregon will get better each week, and I think their improvement this week will be enough to win a close one...
Hey Ted- Oregon State has a tough game with Cinci coming up, not really sure how tested the Cinci defense is, do you think they will be able to stop the Rodgers brothers? Also, If Oregon State wins this game, do you think it will be big enough for the AP voters to put OSU in the top 25?
If the Beavers win, I'd be shocked if they don't jump into the AP poll -- the coaches already have them 24th. The Bearcats are No. 17, so it's almost a given.I think both teams will score and move the ball. The reason I picked Cincinnati is because the Beavers D hasn't mustered much of a pass rush of yet, and that will be critical in this game. Tony Pike runs a heck of a spread-offense with lots of wrinkles. The Rodgers will make plays. Will they make enough?
With the non-stop talk about last years trip to Maryland this week, how much of it do you think will have an effect on Cal's trip to Minnesota this weekend?
A lot of that is sportswriter talk... and, yes, guilty as charged.Cal has not been good on the road of late -- see my story today. But I don't think they have some phobia... I think they take care of business and get ready for another road trip, this time at Oregon.
Is there a way for me to watch the Cincinati Oregon St. game? ESPN shows it as not being aired on TV.
It's on Fox Sports Net.
Is Oregon's loss at Boise worse than Oklahoma States Home LOSS?
Yes and no.The Cowboys posted a huge win over UGA.Then they posted a huge, let-down loss.So they've had the extremes of success and failure.Oregon is still looking for a redletter win.Maybe that happens Saturday
who do you think will win the SEC West?
bama... that's for you SV.
I heard an interview of the Pac-10 commissioner that he is seriously considering inviting 2 teams to the Pac-10. He didn't say which teams he's considering, but if one or both of them were from the MWC, would the team from the MWC accept or would they hold out, hoping that the MWC gets an Auto-bid in 3 years?
He said that? Really?I think expansion is still questionable in the short term. But if I had to guess: Utah and Colorado.
ok...who do u think will win it all?
Lets get to the game of the week already! Any chance that a crazy performance from Locker and a fired up Husky Stadium lead to SC's annual let-down upset?
Always a chance... Huskies played the Trojans tough in recent years before the 2008 debacle.Locker is the sort of playmaker who can take over a game, and he's got some skill around him...The issue for the Huskies is D... I don't think they will be able to stop USC.Now.. USC might stop itself if it makes a bunch of mistakes and takes the game lightly.
Alot of UCLA fans are starting to think they got a real strong team after the win in Tennessee. Over zealous or legitimate team? Love seeing the Pac 10 beat up a "power conference" team, but pretty ugly win.Oh, and GO BEARS!
The D is first-rate. The Bruins can get to a bowl game on that D alone. Now, the difference between 6 or 7 wins and 8 or 9 wins is whether the O grows up.And that will be hard with the QB of the future out with a broken jaw.
You think ASU can keep it close in Athens next week with their defense?
I think the D will do fine, but it's hard to play D if your offense is going three-and-out and making mistakes.I don't have a good feeling about the Sun Devils chances down there, but Georgia is clearly not a world-beater.I wouldn't be shocked if it's still a game in the fourth.
I know none of it matters until they beat them, but on paper, is there really any are where USC is definitively better than Cal this year? I mean, I think secondary, LBs, OLs, and QBs are a wash, but Cal has a better DL, RBs and special teams. I guess that leaves WR to SC, but that's about all I see. Your thoughts?
USC's O-line is better. Much better. That's a huge edge.I think they are comparable everywhere else, though I'm not sure that Cal's D-line is that much better than the Trojans. More experienced, yes, but USC is stout up front. My guess is that game will turn on the QBs. And turnovers, which often are one-and-the-same.
But would Utah accept an invitation to the Pac-10 or would they hope that MWC gets an automatic bid on it's own?
Utah would accept. Why?$.
Before this season there was so much talk about the big12 south being the best division in the country. After both Oklahoma and Oklahoma State fell in the first 2 weeks, is there any doubt that the SEC West is the best division? They have 3 top 10 teams plus a very good Arkansas team and a surprising Auburn team
It's early... seems to me Arkansas and Auburn have some work on their plate this weekend.I'm not sold that any West team other than Alabama is elite. Ole Miss might have a nice team but we'll never really know based on the Rebels weak schedule, in and out of conference.
Hey Ted, love your blog. Are there any out of conference "home and homes" in the Pac 10 that we should be looking forward to a couple years down the line?
Oregon-Georgia 2015-2016.Can you wait that long? That one figures to be big in the comment section of the Pac-10 blog.
best and worst places to see a game based on the team, history and the actual stadium?
I won't give you worst.best?I love Oregon, Florida, Georgia, Notre Dame, Washington -- in the good ole days -- LSU, Ohio State, BYU, Michigan, Oklahoma.Ole Miss tailgate... are you kidding me!Auburn fans are great.Love Cal as a spot -- Strawberry Canyon. When they fix up the stadium, my guess is it will be right there.Never been to Nebraska, which I see as a character fla. Or Wisconsin. Or Texas.IN other words, I like a lot of places.Favorite of all time? Out of time.
Why doesn't the SEC actually play anybody out of conference. It's annoying to us PAC-10 fans
Not exactly true.UGA at Okalahoma State, Arizona State, etc.Tennessee seems to always play someone (UCLA, Cal, etc.)Alabama vs. V-Tech, clemson last year.Auburn vs. West Virginia.
is barkely playing this weekend?
decidedly questionable... money is on Corp starting
Over/under on years it takes Sark to have an 8 win team in Seattle....2.5
That's tough... next year could be interesting but I'm thinking more like six wins in 2010.year three, they will be breaking in a new QB. Thinking 6-7 wins.So... maybe year four.
Texas Vs UCLA is a home and home next year and the year after!
what is chip kelly doing to chip kelly's offense? i'm starting to get angry!
did you ask that with a donald duck voice?I'd advise patience. It's hard to do anything with a struggling O-line, but I project the Ducks will steadily improve.
Ted, it's still a long way out, but if Washington becomes a national power again, does that mean OSU or Oregon will go back to the being obsolete...........like the old days?
absolutely not... it means we might have more seasons like 2000. Only there will be other Pac-10 teams also in the mix.A strong UW only means the Pac-10's depth will dramatically improve.
To me the Cincy game this weekend just seems like one of those games where Riley has them roaring out of the gate and UC just can't figure them out? Any Thoughts?
A fast start on defense would be key.I think the Beavers O is going to do fine. Breaking up the Bearcats rhythm on offense is the challenge.
Why can't ASU recruit? You live here, I know you've seen the campus....with the facitilities, alum, co-eds, sunshine, and a big name coach, what am I missing? This school should be able to compete for the Pac-10 every two or three years.
Erickson is recruiting well... have you noticed the speed on defense. And the Osweiler?Sun Devils will be back in the top-25 sooner rather than later.
The AP voting guidelines state: "Base your vote on performance, not reputation or preseason speculation." Shouldn't this pretty much make Florida not even a top-25 team because their performance is against no one?
No... Florida is the defending national champions and everyone is back... I'd pick the Gators to beat anyone on a neutral field.
Ted, What about the deal we made?
what was the deal.. Bama beats Va-Tech and I say something nice about the Tide...already picked the Tide to win the SEC West...And I didn't want you to go away anyway. You amuse me.
how good will USC's defense be by the end of the year?
if it stays healthy, real good... and Armstead should be coming back at some point, too.
Most intriguing game of the weekend in the Pac-10 is...........
Between Utah-Oregon, OSU-Cincinnati and Arizona-Iowa.All three hold significant value in terms of momentum. And I see all three as toss ups.
Stanford has improved but...........?
needs more speed on defense
Based on the last few weeks, do you still have UO as a legit contender against USC
no... but I always thought Cal was the team that would challenge USC
Which game will you be attending this weekend?
USC at Washington...
will this season get Tebow serious NFL draft consideration? Seems to me selecting a QB is a crap shoot anyway.
Tebow will be a good NFL QB.
Over/Under..years Chip Kelly is head coach at Oregon. 4.5
How long will it be before USC is exposed as a young time that is capable of being beat?
Well, Jahvid... guess we'll know on Oct. 3 in your house.
Do your blog co-workers trash talk among each other?
No.. one of the best things about this gig is how much we all get along... a bunch of hard working pros who really love what they do.
Biggest reason why you think Oregon will beat Utah?
Autzen. And I think Oregon has had a better measure of itself -- and made adjustments -- than Utah.
Good answer! you might be cut out to coach college football!
Thanks! The dry look on Rick Neuheisel's face when I tried to once give him advice suggested otherwise.
Folks ... I got to get back to my day job. See you next week, same bat channel.
