Chat with Dan Rafael

Dan Rafael
  (1:02 PM)

Greetings from Las Vegas Fight Freaks! Big fight weekend with Mayweather's return against Marquez (and an interesting ESPN2 show tonight with Rigondeauz). Plenty to discuss. Let's get right to it.

Horn (Vegas)

I think the urine angle has really help sell this fight. It's been one the primary topics in build up this week. Only in America.

Dan Rafael
  (1:03 PM)

Sick as it is, you're probably right. I did a few interviews for SportsCenter and ESPNEWS and First Take this morning and was asked about it more than once.

Derek (Brooklyn)

How's the atmosphere in Vegas? Where's the Notebook?

Dan Rafael
  (1:04 PM)

The atmosphere picked up yesterday and should be nice at the weigh in today. No notebook today per orders from Bristol. Sorry guys, not my call. But there are extensive features on Floyd and JMM.

Seth (Boston)

D$ - I asked Mayweather during his chat here and he ducked the answer (typical), but in your opinion, at weight has Mayweather been most dominant in his career?

Dan Rafael
  (1:04 PM)

Floyd was unstoppable at 130.

Kent (St. Catharines)

Let's get this chat started with Dano's official Mayweather/Marquez prediction.

Dan Rafael
  (1:05 PM)

My official prediction is on our fight credential page but I am picking Mayweather by a late stoppage. I called the 10th round.

Chris (Nashville)

D$, I see Marquez's 6 fights on the fight credential page, were are Mayweather's? Will there be a RAD?

Dan Rafael
  (1:06 PM)

I have no idea why there isn't a Mayweather top fights. Not my department. RAD? You are a rookie I guess because there are no RADs on night's I am AT the fight.

bill (pgh)

is the weigh in on ESPNews or SC today?

Dan Rafael
  (1:07 PM)

We are slated to have live coverage of the weigh in on ESPN SportsCenter at approximately 6:15 ET / 3:15 PT. If you're in Vegas, it's open to the public and free at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. I think doors open at 1 PT.

Eric (North Hollywood)

Hola Dan, do you know when the Vasquez tickets will go on sale in LA?

Dan Rafael
  (1:08 PM)

Directly from Golden Boy's press release: Tickets, priced at $200, $100, $75, $50 and $25, will go on sale on Friday, September 18 at 10am. To purchase tickets, please call 800-745-3000 or online at ticketmaster.com. Tickets may also be purchased starting Monday, September 21 at 9am at the STAPLES Center Box Office.

Juan (El Paso )

Dan do you think marquez is gonna destroy mayweather?!?

Dan Rafael
  (1:08 PM)

Do you think I love the WBA?

Sean (NJ)

I just read Bert Sugar saying this fight is huge for Floyd bc he is finally fighting a top fighter in his prime...my response? who cares? Marquez is coming way too far up in weight to consider this a big win for Floyd (despite Marquez being a great fighter)

Dan Rafael
  (1:09 PM)

Couldn't disagree more with Uncle Bert because Marquez is not in his prime.

manny (ca)

Do you know of any other fighter drinks his own urine in prep for a fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:09 PM)

No. And I was wondering -- what happens if JMM drinks his pee after the fight? What will happen to his drug test sample?

Joe (Philadelphia)

Is it confirmed that Mayweather-Marquez is a sellout?

Dan Rafael
  (1:10 PM)

LOL! It's not close to a sellout.

Jeremy (Boston)

I saw your prediction for Mayweather by 10th round KO, but you got to give Marquez soem chance dont you?

Dan Rafael
  (1:10 PM)

Not really.

jack (fort collins)

dan, i know you've mentioned this before, but what was your take on the two pacquiao/marquez fights? do you think marquez deserved the nod in either one?

Dan Rafael
  (1:10 PM)

I was ringside for both fights. I had Marquez winning both and have re-watched both many times and still think he won both.

Cesar (Chicago)

Whats's going on with the undercard of Cotto n Pacman? I was looking at a boxing website and they have Valero vs Soto penciled in for November 14th. Is there any truth to that? boxrec.com was the site by the way.

Dan Rafael
  (1:11 PM)

Boxrec's schedule is a joke. The fight was talked about. It was never on. And it's not going to happen now because Valero was denied a visa to the US because of his DUI charge.

ron (bethel ct)

Dan the man whats going on with the Oct 10th card with Junma.!!First Kevin Johnson now Vans Matirosyan disappeared off your schedule. Was there an injury or something?

Dan Rafael
  (1:12 PM)

Vanes is shifting to Top Rank's December PPV card simply because of a scheduling issue. Vanes is trained by Freddie Roach and Freddie will be in the Philippines with Pacquiao, so they moved the fight to December so Vanes can be with Freddie.

Loren ((NYC))

Dan, with Valero's issues, who in your opinion is the front runner to land the fight with Soto. Thanks

Dan Rafael
  (1:13 PM)

Soto may not be on the card. If he is, one fight Top Rank has tossed around is Soto vs. Anthony Peterson at 135.

Daniel (Indianapolis, IN)

A great counter puncher vs. a great defensive fighter. Doesn't this fight project to be a very boring fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:15 PM)

That is the fear of many. Hopefully, it doesn't turn out like that.

Oliver (Rex, Georgia)

Why don't the major PPV cards don't stage better undercards?

Dan Rafael
  (1:15 PM)

The undercard for Mayweather-Marquez is excellent. It has two HBO-worthy fights on it with John-Juarez 2 and Katsidis-Escobedo.

Marc (Salisbury, MD)

You said after Fernando Guerrero's last fight that he needed to improve his competition. Do you think his next opponent, Ossie Duran, is a step up?

Dan Rafael
  (1:16 PM)

It is a bit of a step up although Duran is a smaller fighter.

Cory (Richmond, VA)

Who wins the PPV battle this weekend...boxing or MMA?

Dan Rafael
  (1:16 PM)

The Mayweather-Marquez fight will sell more than the UFC card in my opinion. But who cares?

javier Gorbea (puerto rico)

dan now that kermit cintron is being mention to fight josua clottey on dec 5 does that mean his tune up on oct 24 in puerto rico is off

Dan Rafael
  (1:17 PM)

I am very, very skeptical Cintron will face Clottey in December. There's not a lot of money there, it's a brutally tough fight for Cintron and he turned down way more to fight Mosley.

Dan Rafael
  (1:17 PM)

I am very, very skeptical Cintron will face Clottey in December. There's not a lot of money there, it's a brutally tough fight for Cintron and he turned down way more to fight Mosley.

jason (marlton )

any word if clottey will be fighting on the pavlik williams undercard

Dan Rafael
  (1:18 PM)

He is supposed to be on the undercard.

shaun (roseburg)

Going out on the fantasy train here if there was ever a fight between floyd and bernard hopkins who do you think would win

Dan Rafael
  (1:18 PM)

You see the nonsense that pollutes the chat on the weekend of a big fight?

Walter (Albuquerque, NM)

You'll be the first to say "boxing isn't dead" if the Floyd fight does significantly more than the UFC card, why brush off the competition now, if you're willing to "claim victory" later?

Dan Rafael
  (1:19 PM)

No matter what the fight does on PPV this weekend, boxing is not dead. However, you are an idiot.

Kyle (Indy)

Do like Katsidis to win?

Dan Rafael
  (1:21 PM)

I've gone back and forth on that fight but I do like Katsidis to win an entertaining fight with Escobedo. I think that fight could steal the show.

andres (new york)

dan you know wh at fight will take the place of montiel vs morel on nov 14 I hearmontiel will not be ready because of the cut against vadez

Dan Rafael
  (1:21 PM)

Top Rank is working on. They have a few things in mind, but nothing is settled yet.

Derek (Brooklyn)

D$, has Pavlik even been cleared for December 5th yet? when do you think we'll get an official announcement

Dan Rafael
  (1:22 PM)

Not yet. According to Top Rank and Pavlik's manager, they hope he'll be cleared around Oct. 10.

Kanye West (Post Fight Interview)

"Floyd I'm happy for you and I'm gonna let you finish but Sugar Ray Robinson was the greatest fighter of all time"

Mike (NJ)

what's the capacity of the MGM arena?

Dan Rafael
  (1:23 PM)

The max for a fight is about 16,500.

Steve (NYC)

What's your prediction for John-Juarez?

Dan Rafael
  (1:24 PM)

I like John to win unless he gets robbed like he did in the draw in their first fight in February.

Mike (San Ramon)

What's the "talent" like in Vegas this weekend? I land tomorrow at noon.

Dan Rafael
  (1:25 PM)

I don't think that's something we should go into on a family Web site. In terms of boxing talent, it's excellent!

Mark (NYC)

Watching the Saul Alvarez knockout practically gave me a concussion

Dan Rafael
  (1:26 PM)

How do you think that guy felt?

R! (Yay Area)

Looks like Arce is done, got his @$$ handed to him Tuesday night. Deja vu of the Mijares fight. Soto looked great w/a beautiful KO, is Guerrero next for him?

Dan Rafael
  (1:29 PM)

Arce is indeed now done. He always made fun fights and is a funny dude. Hope he hangs it up before he gets really hurt. Soto-Guerrero is a fight both sides would like to make and I think it's quite possible early next year.

Ivan (Salinas CA)

If JMM looses this fight, do you think his carrer is over?

Dan Rafael
  (1:29 PM)

Ummm,no.

Serena (NY, NY)

I'm going to take this freakin' glove and shove it down his freakin' throat!!!

Joe (NYC)

still gonna shave your beard if the fight does a million ppv sales?

Dan Rafael
  (1:29 PM)

I am a man of my word.

Erik (New York City, Queens)

Heard Ortiz will be back in dec (hopefully), who would be a possible opponent for Victor?

Dan Rafael
  (1:30 PM)

I talked to Victor Ortiz yesterday and he showed off the scar on his wrist. He hopes to fight before the end of the year but there's date set. He may wait until next year.

Mike (SF)

Just an FYI: I simmed the PBF/Marquez fight on Fight Night Rd 4. PBF wins by TKO in the 9th round.

Jamar (Clarksville, Tennessee)

Hey Dan, How do you feel about the "rust issue"? I don't think it will be much of a factor. Going by past fights, Floyd probably won't start heating up until about round five anyways IMO.

Dan Rafael
  (1:32 PM)

I don't think it's going to have a lot of impact. Floyd will take a few rounds to shake it off and then in the old Floyd.

Brian (DC)

Thoughts on Floyd's comments about Larry and Emmanuel? Max is working this fight, correct?

Dan Rafael
  (1:32 PM)

Floyd is a disrespectfull little pr--- sometimes. Yes, Max is working the fight.

Anthony (Sacramento)

Hi Dan! Does Winky have anything in the works?

Dan Rafael
  (1:32 PM)

No.

Joe (Camarillo, CA)

As a father, I am genuinely happy to see Floyd Jr and Sr reconcile...but is it sincere...or just convenient since they're on TV right now?

Dan Rafael
  (1:34 PM)

Talking to both of them in person about it, it seems very sincere, especially from Floyd Sr.

Dan Rafael
  (1:35 PM)

Hey guys, if you put on SportsCenter right now you'll see something on the fight in a few minutes. It's on the top of the topic bar. I taped the segment a little while ago, so tune in.

Nick (Harrisburg, PA)

Is it just me, or does Roger Mayweather have the look in his eyes at all times that he is literally capable of killing someone?

Dan Rafael
  (1:35 PM)

Absolutely.

Xavier (LA CA)

DTM,I was a the PBF/ Marquez work out Monday and saw Dougie Fischer. I jokingly asked him if the rumors of your beef were true (knowing that both you and he have said there is no beef) he confirmed there was no beef, but jokingly said he thinks he could take you in a TLC match.

Dan Rafael
  (1:36 PM)

Dougie and I had dinner together with a couple of other guys on Wednesday night and we joked about our so-called feud.

Jon Boy (Melbourne Fl.)

So Dan, the JMM-FM fight will most likely be the lead in to Klit-Arreola next wkend. on HBO, right?

Dan Rafael
  (1:36 PM)

Ya think?

Winky Wright (NY)

College classes start next week - I'm preparing my school of management for the onslaught of new students.

Walter (LA, CA)

So is Pacquiao officially training in PI now despite Roach and Arum wanting him to train somewhere else?

Dan Rafael
  (1:37 PM)

Correct. He will train the final four weeks in LA.

Tim (San Fran)

I heard that the IRS is garnishing Floyd's pay check for this fight...true?

Dan Rafael
  (1:38 PM)

Correct.

Nick (LA)

Does Marquez come across much smaller than Floyd?

Dan Rafael
  (1:38 PM)

Yes, Mayweather clearly is the bigger man.

Rick (TB)

Did you ever think you'd see RJJ travel overseas for a fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:39 PM)

Never thought I'd see it.

JMM (MEXICO)

Dan you ever drink your own urine

Dan Rafael
  (1:40 PM)

I'm trying to cut down.

Joe (Camarillo, CA)

Did you come up with the Urine Trouble pun or was it someone at ESPN? I almost died laughing when I read it.

Dan Rafael
  (1:41 PM)

Can't take credit for that. Not sure who wrote it by I assume our boxing editor, Darius Ortiz. It was a great headline.

Neal (Atlanta)

Dan huge fan love your insight always. Wanted to get your opinion on the rib injury Mayweather received and if you think it will effect him at all during the fight? Also what do you think about JMM's punching power? If he has the strength at 144 to ever hurt Floyd? Thanks

Dan Rafael
  (1:42 PM)

I don't think the rib injury matters. It's healed because if it wasn't the fight probably would not be happening. I am not sure Marquez's power is going to be anything impressive at 144.

The Critics (Jersey)

let's just hope for a Legendary Night and stop concerning ourselves with other people income, taste in liquid waste, and character flaws

Dan Rafael
  (1:42 PM)

We're boxing fans. We obsess over everything.

Nick (Harrisburg, PA)

I heard that Roger was supposed to bring a box of poo to the press conference the other day to make fun of Marquez...kinda disappointed he ended up not doing it.

Dan Rafael
  (1:44 PM)

Both sides had props to slam the other side. Then Nacho was so classy in the way he spoke about Floyd that Floyd stood up and shook his hand. At that point, both sides forgot the props and it was a very civilized press conference.

Josh (San Antonio)

Any update on Shane Mosely? are we gonna see him fight soon

Dan Rafael
  (1:45 PM)

No update, but Shane will be here today and if I see him I will ask him what's going on. Also, Richard Schaefer I am sure will meet with the HBO folks at some point this weekend to talk about what to do.

Steve (NYC)

Is Oquedo confirmed for the Solis fight? Thoughts?

Dan Rafael
  (1:45 PM)

Yes. Garbage.

Flemming (Copenhagen, Denmark)

Please stop saying urine

Dan Rafael
  (1:46 PM)

Urine, urine, urine.

Bry (SF)

Any thoughts on Mayweather Sr. accusation that Pac is using steroids?

Dan Rafael
  (1:46 PM)

Show me proof.

Neal (Joliet, IL)

A pr... doesn't even begin to describe what Floyd is for his comments about Emmanuel Steward. I'll remember not to feel sorry for him in ten years when every material object he has is repossessed

manny (ca)

urine

randy (nashville)

Dan, i'm coming out in Nov for the pac-cotto fight is it going to be sold out. how many tickets have they sold for mayweather.

Dan Rafael
  (1:47 PM)

Cotto-Pac has probably less than 500 tix left at this point from what I am told. There are a lot more than that left for this fight.

Bob (Saugus, Ca)

Dan, even if JMM doesn't win tomorrow, wouldn't a third Pac-JMM fight be great?

Dan Rafael
  (1:48 PM)

Yup.

Dan Rafael
  (1:48 PM)

Ok, Freaks, put on SportsCenter right now.

Dan Rafael
  (1:49 PM)

I'll be right back -- wanna check out my segment on SportsCenter.

Dan Rafael
  (1:50 PM)

And we're back.

Matt (portland, OR)

Did you see the quote on Freddie Roach's prediction? "I make it a rule to always go with the guy who doesn't drink piss." CLASSIC!

Dan Rafael
  (1:51 PM)

Yes, I did. Gotta love Freddie.

Tom (KY)

Don't be a sissy, answer my previous question

Dan Rafael
  (1:52 PM)

Don't piss me off.

Nai (Bay Area)

If you were just an average boxing fan and not working it, would you purchase this fight? I know the undercard is good, but we're trying to decide if it will be worth it. Tight budget these days.

Dan Rafael
  (1:53 PM)

Defintely.

Steve (Sac,Ca)

Dano, Solid work Dano

Dan Rafael
  (1:53 PM)

Gracias.

Mike (San Ramon)

I wonder how many little boys in Mexico are now drinking their own piss in hopes of being the next great Mexican Warrior?

Dan Rafael
  (1:54 PM)

That is a scary thought.

tony (san antonio)

Dan good segment...noticed it was at the mgm grand. I will be there for the pacman- cotto fight. Is there a bad seat in the mgm? I have tickets in the upper level...

Dan Rafael
  (1:55 PM)

MGM is built for boxing. It's a great arena no matter where you are in it.

Chris (PA)

Historically, how big of an upset would it be if JMM were to KO Floyd?

Dan Rafael
  (1:57 PM)

HUGE.

Emilio (Sacramento)

Hey Dan, do you have assigned seating at press row?

Dan Rafael
  (1:58 PM)

Yes.

Joel Julio ((Your Son))

I'm trying to make you laugh papa, don't you love me anymore.....

Dan Rafael
  (1:58 PM)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child.

Matt ((NYC))

Wait, the IRS is garnishing Floyd's entire paychek? I thought his "stuff" was paid for?

Dan Rafael
  (2:00 PM)

Mayweather has been a liar non stop about his tax situation. It's all public record.

Matt (portland, OR)

Everybody got the Tecate link for the discount correct? Pretty awesome dealhttp://cervezatecate.com/conditions.html

Scott (Worcester, Mass)

what do you think about floyd little random race comments

Dan Rafael
  (2:02 PM)

Ignorance.

Rick (Marina)

What proof do you have that Floyd's paycheck are being garnished?

Dan Rafael
  (2:03 PM)

The Nevada commission regulators have to disclose the distribution of his check. They say the IRS is getting part of his check. That's how.

Paul B (NY, NY)

Dano- Do you have any time to just relax and enjoy out there or are you going from event to meeting to working on strories

Dan Rafael
  (2:04 PM)

It's busy with work but when you're done for the day you can chill and enjoy yourself. Today is a very busy day, for example. Up very early to be in the arena to do a live shot and tape other TV segments. Get back to the room to do the chat. Then brief break, then to the weigh in to see that and more TV stuff and possibly write something depending how the weigh in goes.

Fernando (Houston)

Dan, will you shave your head if Marquez wins tomorrow night??

Dan Rafael
  (2:05 PM)

Will you drink your own whiz?

IRS (Washington, DC)

Folks, we don't make mistakes.

Bucky (Denver)

I will drink the cheapest tequila all night if marquez wins, that is close to urine.

Ryan (Lawrence, PA)

Tell Matt in Portland thanks for the rebate info. I haven't been able to find it for the last few fights. If you can, post it for the Pacquaio-Cotto fight, too.

Dustin (West Palm Beach)

Hey Dano- I was at the Calderon fight this past weekend, but the last couple rounds were a little fuzzy. Was it a hometown decision, or really that close? Think Mayol wins if they fought in the Phillipines?

Dan Rafael
  (2:08 PM)

I watched the fight. I thought Calderon deserved to be ahead when it was stopped, although it was competitive.

Steve (NYC)

Dan you must have one of those sandwiches at Wichcraft.

Dan Rafael
  (2:08 PM)

I always forget about that place when I'm here.

Slade (Arkansas)

Is it just me or has Floyd been a little more low key in bashing his opponent this time? Does he have that much respect for Marquez? It isn't possible he's growing up. . .

Dan Rafael
  (2:09 PM)

He has not talked smack at all. But Marquez has also showed him a lot of respect, so that may have something to do with it.

Jon (Worcester, Ma)

Dan, I'm going to a fight card in Manchester, NH this Wednesday night. The main event is Shieka vs Antwon Echols, and the co main event features Edwin Rodriguez, and there is also a 38-0 heavyweight on the card. Is it worth the trip up to Manchester? -

Dan Rafael
  (2:11 PM)

I always like to see people support small, local shows. But a Sheika-Echols fight is a death match. Both guys are so totally shot.

Kyle (Indy)

Even though its public knowledge that Floyd is getting garnished, if you asked him would he still deny?

Dan Rafael
  (2:12 PM)

Probably.

Kyle (Indy)

Are you going to be able to watch the finale of 24/7 tonight?

Dan Rafael
  (2:15 PM)

Yes, there is a screening in the media center tonight where everyone will watch it together.

David (Houston)

Just to clarify....Mayweather's enitre purse will be taken or just part?

Dan Rafael
  (2:16 PM)

Part of it.

blake (arkansas)

will lara be on the televised undercard? which fights will make television?

Dan Rafael
  (2:16 PM)

Lara is not on TV, it's the last fight before the PPV begins.

Marc (claremont, Ca)

Dan it cost me a big war, but I moved my Anniversary with my Fiance to Sunday so i could watch the Fight in theaters. Freak status?

Dan Rafael
  (2:17 PM)

YES!!!!

Jeremy (Boston)

Have you seen Triple H around gearing up for the ring entrance tomorrow?

Dan Rafael
  (2:18 PM)

No, but I am psyched for that!

Jeremy (Boston)

Dan, just want to make sure. The broadcast shown in theaters will have the HBO commentators?

Dan Rafael
  (2:19 PM)

Yes, it's supposed to be the same as the PPV.

Aaron (Hartford)

How can you not pay 6 million in taxes and think you can get away with it...thats just dumb...

Dan Rafael
  (2:21 PM)

He didn't get away with it.

Harold (Clothier, WV)

Will Triple H do his trademark saliva spray in the corner tommorrow nite after escorting FM to the ring?

Dan Rafael
  (2:21 PM)

I don't know but wouldn't that be cool? Just hope he doesn't spit on me?

Greg (Los Angeles)

Dan how upset was Lou when he found out that Berto met with HBO behind his back? Any idea what the deal is with this whole situation or is it a bad internet rumor?

Dan Rafael
  (2:24 PM)

I spoke to Lou. He's not happy nor should he be. HBO or any network should not meet directly with a fighter without his promoter even knowing about it. Underhanded move by HBO and I am sure this isn't the last we'll hear about it.

Benvenuto (Miami)

As the fight creeps closer Dan, is anyone in your circle of "respected members of the media" choosing Marquez to win? If so, who?

Dan Rafael
  (2:26 PM)

I know of nobody picking Marquez outright.

Marc (Potter, Wi)

The questions you've been taking the last 15 minutes have lacked substance. Let's talk boxing strategy. What does JMM have to do to have a chance in this fight?

Dan Rafael
  (2:27 PM)

Obviously, he needs to pressure Mayweather, try to slow him down and use his jab with abandon.

Cory (Dallas)

Why is the weigh in at 5:15 CT? Are they usually that late in the afternoon?

Dan Rafael
  (2:28 PM)

Yes. It is at 3:15 local time and 6:15 ET in order to be live on SportsCenter.

Ali (NYC)

Dan, what time do you arrive at the arena on fight night? Will you be there for the entire card tomorrow night, including the off TV fights?

Dan Rafael
  (2:28 PM)

I'll be there from the start and have to duck out during the off tv part of the card briefly for some TV stuff.

Rags (NYC)

Yet another indication that HBO thinks themselves as promoters and not distributors.....

Dan Rafael
  (2:29 PM)

You said it, not me.

Andy (Ventura)

If promoter want to make boxing HUGE again, put these type of fights on regular TV.

Dan Rafael
  (2:30 PM)

Wishful thinking. I don't have time for an economics class but it is not possible.

Rags (NYC)

Didn't HBO pull this exact same stunt with Winky Wright back in '06? I think Gary Shaw went nuts if memory serves....

Dan Rafael
  (2:31 PM)

Pretty much. HBO apparently hasn't learned from it's mistakes. I can't wait to hear HBO's excuses on this one.

Juan Manual Marquez (MGM)

This desert air is making my thirsty, I have to go to the bathroom....be right back

Mauri (DFW)

DTM, will ESPN 360 show the untelevised undercards like they did awhile ago?

Dan Rafael
  (2:32 PM)

I do not know if we have the rights to this one.

Nigel (Chestnut Hill, MA)

Dan, does Floyd come off as knowledgeable about boxing in interviews when he's not trying to sell his "arrogant" persona? And does he admit he was hurt against Corley (the only time I've seen him buzzed)?

Dan Rafael
  (2:34 PM)

As I recall, Floyd said he was buzzed in that fight for a minute. He has a lot of respect for Corley and used him as a sparring partner many times after that fight.

Mike (Flushing, NY)

Dan, any word on a Malignaggi Diaz rematch? Also will Dmitry Salida be getting his shot against Amir Khan since he is the mandatory challenger?

Dan Rafael
  (2:36 PM)

Nothing new on the rematch. HBO is interested is all I know at this moment. Salita is getting his shot, most likely on Dec. 5 in the UK.

Erik (New York City, Queens)

Will your ESPN segment come up again on SC for those who missed it?

Dan Rafael
  (2:38 PM)

I have no idea. I'm not the producer. But SportsCenter runs all day and they replay many segments each hour.

Tom (Omaha)

Will Guillermo Rigondeaux get a title shot within the next year?

Dan Rafael
  (2:40 PM)

It's very possible. He is going to be moved very quickly. He has a 10-rounder tonight on ESPN2 in only his third pro fight. I would not be surprised if he had a title bout inside 10 fights in the next year.

Rob (Westbury, NY)

If JMM and Floyd fought a mythical fight at 130, each at their best, who wins and why?

Dan Rafael
  (2:42 PM)

Mayweather beats him at any weight.

Alex (Clev, OH)

Dano, I assume that Freddie Roach will be in Rigoneaux's corner tonight. Is that true?

Dan Rafael
  (2:44 PM)

Yes, Freddie is supposed to be in the corner. After the fight, he's supposed to go back to LA and then leave for the Philippines for Pacquiao camp on Sunday night.

Benvenuto (Miami)

Hey Dan, do you buy into the theory at all that Floyd's record became his number one priority after the second Castillo fight? It seems to me, that after that fight, which a lot of people think he lost, he stopped taking any real risks. In my mind that's when he started carefully picking each opponent. Am I just looking for reasons to pick on Floyd, or is there any substance in my theory?

Dan Rafael
  (2:46 PM)

Once Floyd got to 140, he was very, very careful picking his opponents. He treasures his undefeated record and does not want to put it at true risk.

Jeremy (Boston)

How does ESPN expect people to watching boxing on their channel tonight is they've done practically no promotion of it?

Dan Rafael
  (2:48 PM)

Practically none? How about "none." Who knows. It's disappointing.

Jeff (Queens)

Dan, since you seem to know the latest updates from every direction, any word on PacMan's shape these days? I've heard he looks a bit pudgier than usual. And do you think this will be a major factor in the fight?

Dan Rafael
  (2:50 PM)

Manny looked a little heavy during the press tour but once camp starts I think he'll get in his usual great shape. Freddie and Manny know how dangerous Cotto can be.

Mauri (DFW)

Dan it sounds like you don't think much of JMM or you think too much of PBF. Who do you think can beat PBF then?

Dan Rafael
  (2:50 PM)

I have massive respect for JMM but I am just calling the fight like I see it. Certainly nothing but respect for JMM.

Mike Ski (Chandler AZ)

Dan,As for the drinking of urine, its not old wive's tale. Its part of Ayurvedic Medicine and people have been doing it for over 5000 years. It is full of nutrients and if you eat a healthy diet its toxic as some have said. It adds back lost nutrition and chi (life force). Just cuz American docs say its no good doesnt mean its no good. Take a look at our health care system..lol

Dan Rafael
  (2:52 PM)

I tell ya what Mikey, you drink your pee. I'll stick with water or maybe some juice.

Homer (Oxford, OH)

I rolled my ankle sparring earlier this week. Only if I had drank my urine...

Christopher (Atlanta)

Come on Mauri, Dan has respect for JMM, he had him winning both fights against Manny, I think that qualifies

Dan Rafael
  (2:53 PM)

Exactly.

JJD (Seattle)

Looking at JMM's record - he lost to Freddie Norwood. How'd THAT happen?

Dan Rafael
  (2:54 PM)

Actually, like many I thought JMM won that fight even though Norwood stunk it out as bad as anyone could ever stink out a fight ever.

Bime (Taunton Ma)

D-MONEY$$- Great blog on tuesday. I'm very excited about the possibility of Juama vs Caballero. Have they come any closer to making that official... That would be a great fight

Dan Rafael
  (2:55 PM)

Just talk right now, nothing more than that as far as I know. Remember, JML has a fight on Oct. 10 first.

George (Fontana, CA)

I predict a a TKO victory for Floyd in the late rounds, with the fight being much more exciting than people thought. I cant wait for the undercard fights though.

Nick (Denver)

I will be in Vegas for a bachelor party tomorrow. If I were to sneak away from the group to try to take in the fight, what would be the absolute latest I could show up, get tickets, and still get my money's worth?

Dan Rafael
  (2:58 PM)

Your best best is to be here for the TV undercard that starts at 6 pm. The first TV isn't much, so maybe by 6:30ish to see the last three fights, which are the best ones on the card.

Sean (NJ)

is this a new pro-FMM attitude from Dan?

Dan Rafael
  (3:00 PM)

Not at all. I always say just what I think. I have never had anything but the highest possible regard for Floyd's talent, which is why I am so hard on him about the opponents he picks. Because he has the talent to beat elite opponents. And he also doesnt understand that a loss does not end his career. After Tyson lost he made more money than ever. Same thing with Ray Leonard, Hearns, etc...

Dan Rafael
  (3:01 PM)

I was not at either bout but I scored the first fight off television a draw and had Mayweather winning the second fight, but do not remember my exact score.

Frank (SF)

Dan Rafael have you seen Rafael Marquez around? Anything interesting to share about little brother?

Dan Rafael
  (3:02 PM)

I am told he won't be here. Unless they hare on the same card, the brothers do not like to attend each other's fights.

Jason (LA CA)

Dan,Need your expert advise. Hosting a fight party tomorrow and I'm toren between Pizza and Wings or makit your self Nacho bar?? Help please!!

Dan Rafael
  (3:03 PM)

Pizza and wings. Make it so. At ease.

bj (bay area, ca)

D$ would you drink your urine for a million $?

Dan Rafael
  (3:04 PM)

Of course. You got the cash? I'm feeling thirsty.

Benvenuto (Miami)

I would drink Dans urine for a million bucks

Dan Rafael
  (3:05 PM)

I knew somebody would have to go there. Why am I not surprised it was Benvenuto?

Jack (London Town)

Benvenuto - why do I get the feeling you'd drink it for free

Dan Rafael
  (3:06 PM)

Settle down.

Benvenuto (Miami)

Hey....a mil is a mil.......it is what it is.

Alex (Clev, OH)

Dano, Kessler still your favorite in the Super 6 after last weekend?

Dan Rafael
  (3:07 PM)

Yes. But I think Ward has a geat shot at the upset

Hector (Mass)

Cotto-Pacquiao undercard is not looking 'spectacular'. Arum has the deepest stable in boxing, so will you bash Arum for a horrible undercard?

Dan Rafael
  (3:07 PM)

I'll let him finalize it before I am critical.

Ruben (Santa Ana, CA)

Will the Vazquez fight be televised?

Dan Rafael
  (3:09 PM)

It will be on HBO Plus throughout Latin America. I am told there's a very good chance it will wind up airing in the US on ESPN Deportes.

robert (michigsn)

why is it the media dont accept the fact the floyd is a 140 fighter? who walks around at 147-48 and Not give him credit for that

Dan Rafael
  (3:09 PM)

He's a welterweight. Keep living in the past.

odogg (nm)

Buy or Sell. Floyd retires undefeated.

Dan Rafael
  (3:11 PM)

Sell.

manny (riverside,ca)

do you know if the official weight is 144?

Dan Rafael
  (3:12 PM)

It's 144. I re-affirmed that yesterday with the Nevada commission as that is what it is on Marquez's contract.

Bryce (Fargo)

If Floyd wins tomorrow is he back to the top of your Pound for Pound ranking?

Dan Rafael
  (3:13 PM)

Unlikely. If there is going to be a change it wouldn't be until after Cotto-Pacman.

Greg P (Staten Island,NY)

Dan, is there a rematch clause for Manny/Cotto?

Dan Rafael
  (3:13 PM)

No.

Bob (Saugus, Ca)

Dan, the Tecate rebate form says :Save up to $25.00 by mail with purchase of Floyd Mayweather vs. Juan Manuel Marquez HBO(R) Pay-Per-View Fight on September 19, 2009 (pre-tax purchase price of $54.95) and one (1) Tecate(R) or Tecate(R) Light 12PK or larger (where required). Why $54.95 when the PPV is only $49.95?

Dan Rafael
  (3:14 PM)

No idea. Ask them.

mark (ct)

buy or sell: shane fights this year

Homer (Oxford, OH)

Dan, there is no Diamond Belt garbage for this fight, is there?

Dan Rafael
  (3:16 PM)

No, although the WBC tried to get them to do it for the diamong crap and they were rejected.

Manuel (san jose)

What happens if Cotto and Marquez win?

Dan Rafael
  (3:17 PM)

The referee will raise their hand.

Roger Mayweather (Vegas)

I blame lil' Floyd's tax problems on Angelo Dundee.

Seth (H-Town)

"The referee will raise their hand." Nice Lt. Dan.

Pete (NYC)

Have you seen Omar Henry, the young 154-pounder from Texas? His first few fights have made for some pretty sick Youtube clips, at the very least.

Dan Rafael
  (3:19 PM)

Yes, I have seen him. He's a beast and I am very infatuated with him.

Adam (Mississippi)

First of kudos for not jumping on the Mosely-Clottey fight. Alot people jumped the gun.In your honest opinion do you feel JMM has a true chance? I mean he was a featherweight

Dan Rafael
  (3:21 PM)

Some reporters didn't do their homework on that fight.

Aaron (Hartford)

Kirkland still in jail.??..... just kidding Dan

Marc (Philly)

Are you building bunk beds for Joel Julio and his new possible brother Omar Henry?

Dan Rafael
  (3:22 PM)

Don't give me any ideas.

Tom (OH)

How about, Omar "the Man Crush" Henry?

odogg (nm)

No news from the bat phone?

Dan Rafael
  (3:22 PM)

Plenty.

Marc (Philly)

Any New DVD's arrive this week?

Dan Rafael
  (3:25 PM)

Matter of fact, I received a handful of DVDs, none cooler than a disc that includes Sugar Ray Leonard's 1976 Olympic trials final win over Bruce Curry and all five of his Olympic fights plus the medal ceremonly. All mint shape. Purely amazing.

Benvenuto (Miami)

Your Giants are at Dallas this week...........thoughts?

Dan Rafael
  (3:26 PM)

That my flight home on Sunday is on time so I can be in my house by midway through the first quarter.

Derek (Florida)

I think this might be your longest chat to date i like your style

Dan Rafael
  (3:26 PM)

Thank you but it's not even close to the record.

jason (New york)

Marquez seems stronger than may.. Is that accurate?

Brandon (Arlington, VA)

DTM, great work as usual and kudos to Mulvaney and his blog as well. Buy or sell... an eventual world championship from the next Mayweather generation (Roger or Junior's children)?

Dan Rafael
  (3:27 PM)

Kieran is kicking butt on the blog. I know he likes doing them.

Jeff (Queens)

Dan, is all the pee you are drinking contributing to better chat stamina?

Dan Rafael
  (3:28 PM)

I think it helped replenish my nutrients.

JB (Dallas, TX)

Omar Henry saved my ass at his fight on the Soto Karass undercard a few weeks back. When the fight started, I had to pee so bad I was either going to wet myself or have to pull a JMM. Fortunately, Henry ended things pretty quickly, and I was able to hit the head. I'm a fan.

Dan Rafael
  (3:29 PM)

That was an awesome knockout and that is why I am a fan now.

chrisdiggidy (oklahoma city, ok)

Dan, finally saw the Tyson movie. At the end, I felt like we as a society have really treated him like a caged animal and i finally understand some of the logic behind his behavior. How did you feel after watching it?

Dan Rafael
  (3:31 PM)

That a lot of it was Tyson making excuses. But the movie was from his perspective. I didn't agree with some of the way certain things were portrayed but Mike is entitled to his own viewpoint. That said, it was a good film.

Jake (Arl Hts, Il)

Jermain Taylor wins the tourney, mark my words!

Dan Rafael
  (3:33 PM)

Dream on.

Dan Rafael
  (3:38 PM)

Ok, Freaks thanks for the chat! Hope you all enjoy the big show tomorrow night. Remember the weigh in is on ESPN. Talk to you next week from LA where I will be for the Klitschko-Arreola fight. Enjoy!
