Fantasy Sports w/Eric Karabell

Eric Karabell
  (3:01 PM)

Hello all and welcome to another fantasy sports chat session. I'm thinking it's going to be all football questions today, as baseball is just about done, but let's see what we get... two weeks down in football, 15 more to go... Any questions?

Joe (Bronx, NY)

I know tough situation to have, but do I dare actually sit Kurt Warner this week and play a hot Eli Manning?

Eric Karabell
  (3:02 PM)

Well, of all the fantasy sports writers here, I'm probably the most conservative, the one most likely to not overrate one great game. I like Manning, even ranked him 10th for the week. But I would use Warner.

Jay (Houston)

Is Manningham a worthy WR2 this week?

Eric Karabell
  (3:04 PM)

Ha! Well, check out my Monday blog on Manningham, which got terrific response, and I have followed up today with another one. Staff rankings are posted, and he ended up No. 28 at wide receiver. So I would say no.

Jason (West Bend, WI)

Eric, Who do you think is better the rest of the way....Ronnie Brown or Steve Slaton?

Eric Karabell
  (3:06 PM)

See, now that's a great question. Slaton has had two brutal matchups... and now they're done. I take Slaton. Maybe it's a trick question! Brown comes off a very nice game against an awful run defense. I'll take Slaton.

David (Birmingham, AL)

Do I actually consider starting Fred Jackson over Ryan Grant or Steven Jackson?

Eric Karabell
  (3:07 PM)

I ranked Fred Jackson better for this week. I don't think it's all that tough of a decision, really. Fred's playing great, catches passes and faces the Saints. I do have Grant in my top 10 and S.Jackson just missed. Stats are stats.

Nettie (Atlanta)

Eric -- do you think there is any value to picking up Leinart and stashing him on the bench. How do you think he would rate filling in for Warner, if that happened down the road.

Eric Karabell
  (3:09 PM)

I don't think there's any value at all to it, unless it's a very deep league or a 2-QB league, and there are no QBs on free agency. If Warner gets hurt in a 10-team standard league, there's plenty of choices out there.. .the rookies are still there, Leftwich, Shaun Hill, Campbell.... but in a deep league I see the difference. Plus, who thinks Leinart would play well? Just because he has receivers? I don't.

scott (R.I)

Hi Eric...Would you feel safe starting Hines Ward over Bowe this weekend?

Eric Karabell
  (3:11 PM)

I think they're about even. I ranked Bowe 13 and Ward 15, but I could be convinced to switch them. I expect the Eagles to be in a tough, tough game with the Chiefs... so people who think the Chiefs throw all day because they're way behind... I don't see it. But both should be good. Your team, your call...

Ryan (Conyers, GA)

Do you like T Choice for DAL this week if Barber can't go?

Eric Karabell
  (3:12 PM)

I ranked Choice at 41 at RB, so that doesn't make him a starter or even a good flex option, but he does matter in deeper leagues. Plus, I could see Choice and Felix Jones actually splitting the work this week... We assume Barber doesn't miss much time, but one never knows. I don't think Choice is a great choice for fantasy right away though.

Dave (South Bend)

Sooo... I need a win and I need to choose between Romo or Flacco as my starter. Who would you go with? Also, Torry Holt or Kevin Walter?

Eric Karabell
  (3:14 PM)

I would go with Romo, but it does make a statement that we all rank Flacco so well. I had Romo 9 and Flacco 11, so it's close. Romo wasn't very good against the Giants, but he was also a bit unlucky on a few of those interceptions, like the one Witten kicked up in the air. And I didn't rank Holt or Walter... would have chosen Walter higher though.

Steve (Philly)

EK, Go Phillies! You ranked Wes Welker at 23 in this weeks rankings. If Welker were to be inactive on Sunday where would you rank Julian Edelman? Would you rank him ahead of Percy Harvin and Laurent Robinson?

Eric Karabell
  (3:16 PM)

Yeah, it's really just a guessing game when I rank players on Tuesday. I think Welker plays but Barber and Tomlinson do not... we don't know for sure. No, I would not put Edelman ahead of Harvin or Robinson if Welker misses the game. Not sure I would rank him at all. Not like the Pats have played so well...

Mark (Dallas)

I just dropped the Chargers D for the Bengals. Now I'm starting to second-guess myself seeing that they're ranked 13th and 18th. Something you guys like about the Chargers after two very sub-par performances?

Eric Karabell
  (3:17 PM)

No, I'm not a big fan of the SD defense, but the Bengals? What do you see there? They shut down Kyle Orton I suppose... but I don't think the Chargers are a top-10 defense, but I still trust them more than Cincy.

Andy (Harrisonburg VA)

What do you make of the running back situation in New Orleans...I was big on Pierre Thomas and his untimely injury hurt my squad, now with his return he'll likely be spelled by Bell, what's his value?

Eric Karabell
  (3:17 PM)

Bell might not play this week, as he hurt his knee late in Sunday's game. I think Thomas, when healthy, is the clear starter. We'll see how good he feels this week. Thomas can still be a very good fantasy option. He hasn't really played yet.

Tim (Tampa, Fl)

Thoughts on Mewelde Moore in the future??? PPR league and he has done me right in spot duty over the years.... Pittsburghs backfield is just a tad unsettled........

Eric Karabell
  (3:19 PM)

I think Willie Parker's problems are mainly because of a sore hamstring, the offensive line isn't helping matters. I still expect nice numbers from him though. Moore is a third-down back and if Parker had to miss time, I still think the Steelers would push Mendenhall over Moore if they knew ahead of time.

Matt (Columbus)

Fred Jackson, does he get the majority of the work once Lynch comes back next week?

Eric Karabell
  (3:21 PM)

Check my Tuesday blog for this topic! I don't see how the Bills take Jackson out of the starting role no matter how good Lynch looks. Jackson is the man right now.

Frank (Long Beach (NY))

So Shaun Hill is not even ranked? I was thinking he may be forced to throw if Minny shuts down the run. My other option is Leftwich. Thoughts?

Eric Karabell
  (3:21 PM)

Minnesota hasn't really been shutting down the run. They seem more balanced. Hill isn't doing much, so yeah, I didn't rank him. I don't give up on Hill, but until we see something, it's tough to use him over Leftwich. Now that guy has been throwing and doing OK.

Joel (Roscommon MI)

WR3 this week..... Knox, Mason, or Bennett ?

Eric Karabell
  (3:22 PM)

Derrick Mason would be my choice. I like those Bears some, but Mason is established.

Steve (Eugene, OR)

Go Ducks! Eric, what do you think about McGahee going forward? Nice matchup against the Browns but after that, sell high or will he continue to be the man in Baltimore?

Eric Karabell
  (3:23 PM)

I think at some point Ray Rice will break some big plays and take over, but for now it's clearly McGahee, and he gets the goal-line looks as well. Ride the hot hand.

Prasad (South Plainfield)

The Bengals did have a lot of sacks against the Packers and locked up Jennings. Don't know if I trust them yet but they have shown some signs of being a viable fantasy unit

Eric Karabell
  (3:23 PM)

I'll agree with that, for now... viable yes, top-10, no.

Jeremy (Orlando)

Thinking about offering Brandon Jacobs for Slaton. Who wins that trade in a PPR?

Eric Karabell
  (3:24 PM)

I still think in a PPR it's Slaton.. but Jacobs is gonna have a big week against Tampa. The Giants are still a running team. One game doesn't change it.

David (New Orleans, LA)

Is Cutler a top 10 QB moving forward?

Eric Karabell
  (3:26 PM)

I think Cutler is right there around the 9-to-11 range. Yes, he's going to continue to get better.

Mack (NY)

When are Berrian owners going to finally see Favre throw the ball downfield?

Eric Karabell
  (3:27 PM)

So far I'm beginning to wonder if Berrian even comes close to his league-leading yards per catch average of over 20 last season. What a shame. This isn't the Favre we used to know! To answer you, I don't know, but it will happen.

Freddy (New York)

Brady or Schaub. Who do you like more the rest of the way? I am trying to trade one but Brady get more respect in terms of offers.

Eric Karabell
  (3:27 PM)

I can't think of a worse time to trade Brady than this week. Keep 'em both. It's not like Schaub is Mr. Healthy. I'd think now is a good time to deal him.

Ryan (Orlando)

Have the Ravens said anything to hint at who the featured back would be? We heard so much about Rice, but then McGahee re-emerged....got anything?

Eric Karabell
  (3:28 PM)

I think they will go with the hot hand, or ... um, foot. McGahee is the guy now. Same with Tampa Bay and Cadillac. Teams don't feel like they have to pick only one guy.

Bruce (The Windy City)

Eric, do you trust Ced Benson against the Steelers? I didnt think he'd stand up to GB and he handled them well. Im in a PPR league as well which help his stats. Thanks.

Eric Karabell
  (3:29 PM)

I don't think this will be one of Benson's better games, but I did rank him 27. That's probably a bit harsh though. Benson did not catch a pass in Week 2, so be wary...

Steve (Boston)

Another Slaton question...him or Kevin Smith rest of year. Boldin or Jennings?

Eric Karabell
  (3:30 PM)

Do you really need to decide for the rest of the year? If someone is trying to get Slaton from you, then you should realize why that is. Last week to buy low on him. I'd take Slaton and Jennings.

Jason (Philly)

Let me rephrase this in a more general way, how can two writers have a RB ranked third, and the other two near the end of the 20's? What do they see that they don't like Chris Johnson this week, that you and I don't?

Eric Karabell
  (3:32 PM)

That exact topic is being discussed in the Bristol office right this very moment! And we have no answer. I think I'm right... but we'll find out Monday morning, eh? I think Johnson is someone who transcends matchups, in a way. I'm sure the guys who ranked him 20 don't agree. Like, I'll never rank Peterson 10th. He's No. 1. After seeing what Johnson did, I trust him against any team. But I understand what the other guys are thinking there.... check out Tristan Cockcroft's Called Out article tomorrow... I have to believe Chris Johnson gets discussed.

E (Brookline)

I have Calvin Johnson and both steve smiths (carolina and new york). Does it make sense for me to trade Houshmanzadeh for Steve Slaton, in an attempt to buy low?

Eric Karabell
  (3:33 PM)

Now you're talkin'.... absolutely!

Eric (Fort Collins CO)

It appears you'd start Mason over Edwards this week without a doubt. Do you like him more in general or is it simply because of the matchups?

Eric Karabell
  (3:34 PM)

Probably both. I'm not giving up on Braylon, but I don't see Brady Quinn doing a whole lot at this point. Still too early to know for sure. Mason gets catches every week, and Flacco is good...

Hunt for the finish (Anytown USA)

BASEBALL PLEASE!!! Keeper league...better option assuming both are 10th rd picks and can be kept for three years.....Roy Oswalt or Brandon Webb?

Eric Karabell
  (3:35 PM)

Tough to answer. Webb won't be in Arizona, but I wonder how much longer Oswalt can pitch well. I'd say Webb though.

Michael (San Antonio, TX)

Baseball!!! Who do you see having the better 2010? 1B Kendry Morales or 2B Robinson Cano?

Eric Karabell
  (3:36 PM)

Considering the position he plays, I would take Cano earlier in a 2010 draft... but Morales will hit for more power, obviously. That make sense? Both are good... Cano helps more because he plays 2B.

Michael (Portland, ME)

BASEBALL! Is Alfonso Soriano's days as a must keeper over, even in NL-only leagues?

Eric Karabell
  (3:36 PM)

Absolutely... I kept him in a league this year over Mauer, and I'm not too happy about it...

Tom Tuttle (Tacoma)

EK, how about a baseball question? I'm fighting for every last save and need to grab either Thornton or Dotel to replace Jenks (assuming the White Sox actually win another game this year). Dotel has more closing experience and is right-handed, but Thornton has clearly been the better and more dominant guy this year, so I'm leaning his way. Your thoughts?

Eric Karabell
  (3:38 PM)

I think it's going to be Thornton. The Sox haven't made an announcement, but Ozzie Guillen has chosen Thornton before when Jenks was unavailable. He has to know Dotel gives up too many walks and home runs...

Jake (VA Beach)

You're the only one with Brady over Schaub (albeit one spot like the others). Would you start Brady just based on his history?

Eric Karabell
  (3:38 PM)

Really? Shocking to me. People thought Brady would throw 40 TDs and now he's behind Schaub after two weeks.. .amazing! But I do think they are close.

Ozzie (Pasadena)

Would you drop LeSean McCoy or Knowshon Moreno for Tim Hightower in a PPR league?

Eric Karabell
  (3:39 PM)

I don't think McCoy is at the same level as Moreno, personally. I'd cut McCoy. Even if Westbrook misses time I think the Eagles would just throw more or run the Wildcat all day.

Vince (Seattle)

If you had to trade away Lynch or Slaton to upgrade at other positions, who would you pick?

Eric Karabell
  (3:40 PM)

Well, that's about value. If Slaton gets me a far better WR, that has to be considered. But if they are the same, then I absolutely keep Slaton. Lynch might not play much.

Tom (NY)

EK will Tashard choice be making reservations for six this weekend?

Eric Karabell
  (3:40 PM)

I like it! I could see Choice outgaining Felix, but man, can't you see Felix breaking a long run or two for a score?

Mike (Tulsa, OK)

Eric, seems like Manningham gets all the Giants love, but what about Steve Smith? Should I drop Berrian or Lendale for him?

Eric Karabell
  (3:41 PM)

Well, as I wrote on Monday, I like Smith over Manningham... but I would not dump Berrian or Lendale...

Chuck (Hershey)

Baseball, would you prefer Homer Bailey (@Pit, Stl, Pit) or Brian Duensing (@Sox, @Det, KC)? Need Wins, ERA, K?s.

Eric Karabell
  (3:42 PM)

That is a stunning question, one I never thought I'd see. Had to share it with everyone. Sadly, it makes total sense. In deep leagues, these are the decisions people have to make! I take Duensing though...

Tom (NY)

Justin Gage is projected another double digit weekend for the third week in a row. With Reevis on him do you see this happening?

Eric Karabell
  (3:44 PM)

No, I do not, but I do think Gage will have some good games this season, and it would be wise to add him before someone else does. But this week, not a big fan.

Paul (Chicago)

Which Jags WR you like going forward, Sims-Walker or Holt?

Eric Karabell
  (3:45 PM)

I think it's Sims-Walker. Holt isn't getting double covered and still he's not doing much. It's kinda sad.

Michael (Atlanta)

I'm looking to deal either Schaub or Warner. Who should I keep........and don't give me the "whoever will give you better value" speech. I want to know which QB will have more points at year's end.

Eric Karabell
  (3:45 PM)

Ha! Well, the value stuff is all that matters here. I think Warner will have more points. I also think Warner fetches more in return. So you have a decision to make! Ultimately I think their value is similar, and both are injury risks.

Kenny (Kansas)

I have a total bum in Steven Jackson and he's playing against Green Bay. Can you name some second tier running backs you'd start over this guy? Reggie Bush? Cadillac? McGahee?

Eric Karabell
  (3:46 PM)

Well, didn't the Packers get run all over by Ced Benson? I ranked Jackson nicely this week. McGahee is right with him though. Bush is not.

Gifford (Ocean NJ)

Worried about Rodgers and Eddie Royal?

Eric Karabell
  (3:47 PM)

Not at all worried about Aaron Rodgers... but Royal, you betcha. Orton can't get the ball deep... Cutler could.

Jim (Holliston)

isn't every player an injury risk? this is football after all

Eric Karabell
  (3:47 PM)

Jim, we are ALL injury risks, if you think about it... Man, I saw a nasty car accident this morning. Just savor life I say!

Jon (Minneapolis)

You think Slaton could be had for Driver? What about Boldin? Team needs a better WR.

Eric Karabell
  (3:48 PM)

I have no idea what another owner might or might not do. I'm just saying, if you want to acquire Slaton on the cheap, there's not much time left. About 4 more days... if you can do this for Driver...wow.

Mark (Minnesota)

Whats the chances Adrian Peterson actually runs for 100 yards versus San Fran this weekend?

Eric Karabell
  (3:49 PM)

Good and really good.

Cooper (New Mexico)

Should I give up on Antonio Bryant?

Eric Karabell
  (3:49 PM)

I would try to avoid that... give him time to get healthy.. Leftwich is actually doing OK.

Mark (Ann Arbor)

What do you think about Moreno?

Eric Karabell
  (3:50 PM)

Omar? Big base stealer with the 70s Pirates, but never took a walk. Oh, Knowshon Moreno? Has little competition, so when he gets healthy he'll be worth a RB3 soon.

Owen (NYC)

Do you own Derrick Mason anywhere? You say he's consistent, but he has done nothing the first two weeks and he's been completely absent from the play-by-play logs for entire halves. I'm starting Laurent Robinson over him this week. Would you do differently?

Eric Karabell
  (3:51 PM)

It's a bit too early to panic, isn't it? Mason is pretty reliable... and he has a nice matchup this week. I'd stick with him as a WR3.

Joshua (California)

Hiya Eric, do you think Ray Rice's stock will drop more because of McGahee's vultured TDs? Do you have any faith in Rice?

Eric Karabell
  (3:52 PM)

I think Rice will still get plenty of yards, and he'll score some touchdowns... but McGahee is running better for now.

Jim (Columbia, MO)

I had high hopes for Donnie Avery in year 2, but so far he is, um, not so great. Think he'll improve or should I dump him for Steve Smith (NYG) or whoever I can?

Eric Karabell
  (3:52 PM)

I'm thisclose to giving up on Bulger and Avery. Want to see one more week. That said, I would take both Steve Smiths over him, yes. Not sure about the "whoever I can" part though.

DJ (Denver)

So is felix Jones a better option than Ray Rice?

Eric Karabell
  (3:53 PM)

This week, if/when Barber sits out... oh yeah.

Buck (Minnesota)

Your thoughts on Adrian Peterson this season so far?

Eric Karabell
  (3:53 PM)

Haven't seen any reason why he can't rush for 2,000 yards...

Jamal Lewis (CLE)

Will I get double digit points anytime this season?

Eric Karabell
  (3:53 PM)

Um...twice.

Chris (NY)

Alwalys rubs me the wrong way to start a WR in the flex but is Hines Ward a better play than LJ, Buckhalter or Bradshaw this week?

Eric Karabell
  (3:54 PM)

That's dinosaur thinking! I haven't done my flex rankings yet, but I have to think Ward will end up better than those guys...

Tom (NPT,NY)

Do you like my Jamal Lewis impression? hahaha

Eric Karabell
  (3:54 PM)

Do you like my Eric Karabell impression? hahaha

Brian (at work)

Should I drop Chris Henry or Meachem for Sims-Walker and/or Crayton. I'm desperate for production from my WR!

Eric Karabell
  (3:55 PM)

I'm at work too... no, I would keep Henry and ... would probably go Crayton over Meachem...

Jared (Chicago)

Another Slaton question! Would you rather have him over K. Smith or R. Grant for the season?

Eric Karabell
  (3:55 PM)

I think I answered this... yes...

Steve Smith (Springfield)

Which one of me will wind up with better stats from here on out? (I'm serious...)

Eric Karabell
  (3:56 PM)

That sounds like a blog idea, because you're not the first to ask the question. C'mon, I still think it's the Panthers Smith... but we did rank the Giants' Smith very well this week.

Billy (SD)

I picked up Beanie over F. Jackson thinking he'd get more carries. How big of a mistake?

Eric Karabell
  (3:57 PM)

Let's talk about the titanic...

Tom (NPT,NY)

ELIMINATION question. What match up would you pick for this week?

Eric Karabell
  (3:58 PM)

Can't believe I lost on the Titans against Houston... I'm out in Week 2? Uh. Steelers or Eagles? I'd try to avoid Redskins. Bad feeling about that one! Go Lions...

Phil (Houston)

Lightning round! Was offered Hightower for Moreno, deal or no deal?

Eric Karabell
  (3:58 PM)

Oooh... long term, I don't think I would.

Ben (Boston)

Camarillo or Sims-Walker?

Eric Karabell
  (3:58 PM)

Sims-Walker...

Tom (NPT,NY)

5 posts on the live chat. Is this a new record for you EK?

Eric Karabell
  (3:59 PM)

Five? I see SIX!

Torn (Chicago)

Schaub or Rogers this week and the rest of the season?

Eric Karabell
  (3:59 PM)

Rodgers...

Phil (NYC)

Do you see Addai making it through the year both as the starter and health-wise? I just picked up Brown.

Eric Karabell
  (3:59 PM)

I see Brown taking over relatively soon...

Keith (Phoenix)

Kevin Walter, Lee Evans, or Justin Gage??

Eric Karabell
  (3:59 PM)

Like the hoagie place I frequent on Sundays.... it's LEE'S....

Eric Karabell
  (4:00 PM)

OK, my time is up. You guys have been great, thanks for the questions and have a good day. Enjoy Week 3 and beyond....
