Chat with Bill Williamson

Reid Brooks (Oklahoma City)

Can I get some input on the Broncos defense? No one is talking about it. Everyone was saying this was a 3-13 team before the season started, now they're 2-0 and looking like a solid, defensive squad in my eyes. Are we being tricked by a weak opening schedule? The Bengals did look pretty offensively solid against the Pack. Broncos D, Nolan's Crush or The Pretenders?

Bill Williamson
  (2:04 PM)

Yes, the Denver defense has been much better than expected. Very impressive. It shows you what coaching can do. nBw DC Mike Nolan has been fabulous. If it can continue, perhaps Denver has a chance for survival during its upcoming tough stretch.

Jamarcus Russell (Oakland) [via mobile]

At least I have a strong arm... That's something positive, right?

Bill Williamson
  (2:04 PM)

OK

Howie (Indiana)

What is your take on Murphy's TD that got over turned? Did Pitt really win the SB or should that TD been over turned too? The new rule change (when it happens) Should be Murphy's Law. Raiders got the shaft. The ref should be fined! or fired!

Bill Williamson
  (2:06 PM)

I'm really confused. I get that it is a rule, but the kid did nothing wrong. I was there. When it was challenged, I had no idea what was the reason. Very weird ... But I don't buy an Oakland bias. Sorry, I just don't.

Ryan (NJ)

Hey BW, whats they key matchup in the Oakland Broncos game?

Bill Williamson
  (2:10 PM)

Keys for Oakland: Run the ball, Russell needs to be over 50 percent comp, and it has stop the run on defnese.Keys for Denver: Jump out to a lead, score on defense and get Brandon Marshall and Eddie Royal involved.

Uncle Norval (San Diego)

I thought we were playing Canadian rules with only 3 downs, thats why I kicked a FG on 3rd down with 10 seconds left in the half

Bill Williamson
  (2:10 PM)

Funny, funny.

Jack (Boston (MA))

I know it's early and the Broncos schedule is brutal but they seem to be more of a 8-8 team than a 4-12 or 5-11 team that many people forecasted-agree?

Bill Williamson
  (2:10 PM)

At this point, yes. And I'm one of those guys who thought they would be 4-12.

Corey Sanford (Roxboro, NC)

If Jamarcus doesnt pan out this year do you think AL will pull the plug? And if he does what quaterback do you think oakland should go after in free agency or draft or trade

Bill Williamson
  (2:14 PM)

If the rest of the team continues to make strides and Russell contunes to struggle, yes a change could be possible. If a quarterback shows no real strides after three years, there is a problem.

David (KC)

Bill - I don't get your love for the Raiders (your rankings). Did you catch their game at Arrowhead? There simply can't be a more inept qb in the league than Russell. The Chiefs marched all over the Raiders (between the 20

Bill Williamson
  (2:16 PM)

See, Raider Nation, someone thinks I love the Raiders ... Yes, David, the Chiefs walked all over the Raiders. But they lost. I didn't have the Raiders ranked all that high anyway.

Eric (San Diego)

Bennett as primary back with Sproles as COP...why not? Sproles isn't going to last running between the tackles, even doing it sparingly.

Bill Williamson
  (2:18 PM)

Yeah, I don't mind that one, Eric, while LT is out. I love Sproles as a change of pace guy. He's the best in the league. But he's not a workhorse. No matter what Bennett would do as the primary back, Sproles would light up opponents as a change of pace guy. I like it.

Steve (NJ)

McDaniels said he will alternate receivers. WHY when you have Brandon Marshall and Eddie Royal?

Bill Williamson
  (2:20 PM)

McDaniels beleives in his system more than he does individual players. That's why Cutler was traded ... But it's working so far. McDaniels has lost very few games in the NFL.

Jason (Orange County)

With all the hate out there for Jamarcus, is there any chance that we'll see Gradkowski this season?

Bill Williamson
  (2:21 PM)

If Al Davis and Tom Cable join in on the hating.

Jeremy (Mansfield,OH)

Skins or Lions?

Bill Williamson
  (2:21 PM)

What the heck, Lions.

Will J (Portland, OR)

After 2 weeks, this division seems wide open, which I figured SD to run away with. Oakland, KC and Denver aren't as bad as I previously though, and SD isn't as good. Any thoughts?

Bill Williamson
  (2:23 PM)

I agree. But San Diego is still good. It's still better than the other teams. But the Chargers are dealing with a ton of serious injury issues. Losing Jamal Williams and Nick Hardwick is not good.

Ryan (Phoenix)

With Shanahan gone, do the Broncos still have that little extra hatred for the Raiders? As a broncos fan, I am now finding I would rather root for the Raiders over the Chargers. Is this feeling common?

Bill Williamson
  (2:27 PM)

Yes, that "extra" hatred was courtesy of Mike Shanahan, who still despises his former boss, Al Davis. But Denver owner Pat Bowlen truly relishes beating Oakland and I'm sure he has expressed that to new coach Josh McDaniels.

Antwoine (Des Moines)

hey Bill hey do you think kc will air the ball out more against the eagles because of how the saints didi them last Sunday?

Bill Williamson
  (2:29 PM)

Todd Haley thought during camp that he'd have a better chance to win if he ran the ball more. But I think he'll see some oppportunites and have Matt Cassel throw more.

Chris (Dallas, TX)

Dumervil=Pro Bowl??? Yes or No?

Bill Williamson
  (2:30 PM)

I'll say yes. But he needs another 8-10 more sacks, which is very doable in 14 games.

jason (nebraska)

how bad are the chiefs

Bill Williamson
  (2:31 PM)

I don't think they are that bad. They just need to learn to finish.

steven (dixon)

whose the Best RB In the Afc West?

Bill Williamson
  (2:33 PM)

Right now? Sproles is maiking the biggest impact ... I love McFadden but he needs to start make something happen

Kevin (KS)

I am ok with the Chiefs being horrible, but part of the rebuilding process is seeing a team's young building blocks mature. If Todd Haley hasn't identified J.Charles as his back of the future he won't last long.

Bill Williamson
  (2:35 PM)

Yeah, Chrles need to play, but I think Haley thinks he can win now with LJ.

FELIX (Long Beach, CA)

why does it seem like Jamarcus's comfort level throwing the rock to zack miller is so much better than when he is throwing it to his receivers

Bill Williamson
  (2:36 PM)

Maybe it's the routes. Maybe he likes throwing in the middle of the field. Or maybe he just trusts Miller more. There is no question those two have a nice chemistry together.

CJ (Michigan)

Is Knowshon on the verge of breaking out? Seems like against Oakland would be a good week to do it!

Bill Williamson
  (2:37 PM)

I think we'll see more and more of Moreno each week.

Tarek (NYC)

Bill, which team has a better shot at winning the divison? Oakland or Denver?

Bill Williamson
  (2:38 PM)

I'll tell you Sunday evening.

rompson (cali)

michael huff.pro bowler??

Bill Williamson
  (2:41 PM)

If he makes making all of those interceptions.

greg (oakland )

whos been worst so far this season Heyward-Bey or Russell?

Bill Williamson
  (2:42 PM)

Russell because it his third season. He should be better. DHB is still a work in progress.

Mark (San Francisco)

Jackson: born 1983, 2430 career yds. Marshall: 1984, 2960. Bowe: 1984, 2113. Who finishes with the most career yards?

Bill Williamson
  (2:44 PM)

Great one, Mark. I'm going to go with Jackson. Marshall is a question mark right now and Bowe just isn't as good as Jackson.

Lemont (Denver, CO)

This sunday, I think the raiders are going to stick Nnamdi on Eddie Royal to prevent what happened last year @Oakland from happening. And also because Marshall is a situational WR. Thoughts?

Bill Williamson
  (2:44 PM)

If that's the case, McDaniels better make Marshall a bigger part of the offense to take advantage.

thompson (707)

why haven't the raiders cut stanford routt??

Bill Williamson
  (2:45 PM)

He hasn't been very good has he?

Big Daddy (ND)

JaMarcus, the new Ryan Leaf?

Bill Williamson
  (2:46 PM)

Russell hasn't had any off-field issues that Leaf had. But, the on-field comparisions aren't bad.

Roger (Maryland)

DHB and Vernon Davis have no hands. Is that a Maryland thing?

Bill Williamson
  (2:48 PM)

How are your hands, Roger?

Brenden (Denver)

Besides completion percentage I think orton has been pretty good so far. He's also been playing with the glove on do you see him getting better as the season goes on?

Bill Williamson
  (2:49 PM)

Hey, Orton is winning. He is 23-12 as a starter in the NFL. He fits McDaniles system. He isn't pretty, but he's winning so far.

Lemont (Denver, CO)

Any updates on the Cable situation?

Bill Williamson
  (2:50 PM)

I checked Tuesday. It's is still ongoing. It's been investigated for more than a month.

harry (oakland,ca)

when will mcalister sign with the raiders? if he does, what impact will he have?

Bill Williamson
  (2:51 PM)

That one has been quiet for a while.

Eric (New Mexico)

Who wins a sumo match between you and Tony Siragusa?

Bill Williamson
  (2:52 PM)

The Goose, for sure.

Chris (Dallas, TX)

Brandon Stokley has been the most clutch player in the AFC West the first 2 weeks. True or False.

Bill Williamson
  (2:52 PM)

Him and Rivers.

Steve (San Diego)

Bill, Chargers D has been a major disappointment this year. Was I being delusional thinking they could be great with Merriman back? Would you say the Broncos D will be better over the whole season?

Bill Williamson
  (2:54 PM)

The San Dieog defense hasn't been that bad. It has had a lot of stops. Still not crazy about the pass defense, though. And it is clear Meriman is not close to being 100 percent healthy.

Chris (Edgewood Ky)

Does Bengals beat Pitt Sunday?

Bill Williamson
  (2:55 PM)

I don't think so.

Zuriel (Seattle)

Would you include Philip Rivers in with the QB divas? He is a diva in his own way.

Bill Williamson
  (2:56 PM)

Philip Rivers is one of the most down to earth athletes I've ever dealt with.

G ((NY))

How bad is LT's ankle? When do you think he'll be back to 100%?

Bill Williamson
  (2:57 PM)

I don't think he's close to 100 percent. He may need to miss another game.

Tim (Montana)

Does Todd Haley need to control himself better on the side line?

Bill Williamson
  (2:58 PM)

Probably. But he's fiery. We've known that. It's who he is.

Alex (Littleton, CO)

Denver has a real tough schedule, but which of these is the most winnable? DAL, NE, @SD, @BAL, PIT, NYG, @PHI

Bill Williamson
  (3:00 PM)

It's a brutal strethc. The Broncs have to win at least two of those home games.

L (NY)

Which stadium in AFCW is best for tailgating?

Bill Williamson
  (3:00 PM)

Got to love Oakland.

Bill Williamson
  (3:01 PM)

Great hour, everyone. Enjoy Week 3. Talk to you next week.
