Will be good to see cars going around in circles instead of straight lines as they were at at the NHRA event I covered this past weekend. There were a lot of things to like about the NHRA, but give me Sprint Cup any day. Fire away.
Hey David i have one question do u pick Kasey Kahne to win another race or possibly win the chase after new hampsiere, i think he has too many good tracks coming up to not be in contention!!
There are a few favorable tracks for him, but the deficit will be tough to close. That team hasn't proven to bounce back from problems like, say, Jimmie Johnson. Plus there are a lot of great drivers that would have to have bad days as well. You can't expect all of them to have a day as bad as Kahne did.
David, as always thanks for the chats. Do you think that Max Jones will be running the show at RPM? Also, last week you mentioned that McMurray might have a tough decision if he doesn't go to EGR, what did you mean by that?
He likely will have a big role, but I'm told Robbie Loomis will remain the go-to guy. As for McMurray, I meant he might have to decide to go to a team that doesn't have full sponsorship for the season.
David, sorry but had to ask this question, I read somewhere that Ford really like McMurray and wants to keep him, would this mean they court Ganassi over to the blue oval? Sorry just trying to find out the last piece of the silly season puzzle.
Ganassi isn't going anywhere as long as he is associated with DEI, which has a partnership with Richard Childress Racing to build engines through Earnhart Childress Racing.
Who do you think will be the 2009 IndyCar Series Champion
Haven't followed it terribly close. Won't be Danica. What about Scott Dixon?
Do you think that Mark Martin will race until he is a grandfather
Didn't you see my Granddaddy.com reference last week? Matt, Martin's son, is a bit young to be starting a family, so I doubt you'll see Granddad Martin on the track.
David... Do you think Brian Vickers still has a shot at the Sprint Cup title? Thanks!
Never say never, but I wouldn't put him in my top five.
Hey Dave, Now the season is coming to a near, I am getting really interested to see who will be the crew chief for Dale Jr. next year. If i remember correctly Lance was not too excited about taking the job over in the first place, so i dont expect it to be him next year. I was REALLY hoping to see Ron Malec, but since yesterday I am now starting to hear rumors about Tony Jr. coming back. Rick Hendrick would never let this happen would he??
Earnhardt has talked to Eury about joining him at JR Motorsports and helping with the No. 5 Nationwide team, but there are no plans to reunite at Hendrick. As for who will be the man next season, Malec makes the most sense to me. I'm just not convinced Lance is the answer.
Mr.Newton is there a chance we could see pops move with Brad K. to cup and do you think theres a chance we could see Ron M. from the 48 be his crew chief or kurts
Not at all. He's committed to Dale Jr.
Since Kurt Busch heard the news of Trysons departure, he's finished 2nd and 6th. Will he keep coming up with these kind of finishes and have a shot, especially since Tryson said he wants to win the title?
You'd think this would be a distraction, but it seems to be working. As long as it is they'll stay together through the end of the year. If Kurt falls out of contention I'd look for a change.
hi dave, monster mile this weekend hoe do you feel about ryan newmans first victory of the year come this weekend.if not a win maybe top five.what type of car will he bring?thanks.
He's done well there before, but it seems both teams at Stewart-Haas Racing have fallen off the past month or so.
David, what's the deal with Kahne
He's with an organization that is somewhat in turmoil. Other than that, what do you mean?
Do you think Martin Truex is making big mistake going from a pretty good team like DEI to a mediocre one like MWR? Do you think he will come close to competing for a win next year.
Not at all. MWR has had a solid third season and appears to be on the way up. Plus, Truex is guaranteed full sponsorship in the 56. He didn't have that in the 1 at EGR.
I must have missed it, but what was the story behind Gibbs reading Addington the riot act after the Richmond race? This seems totally out of character for either Gibbs?
I missed it as well. I was at the NHRA event in Charlotte. It does seem out of character.
Do you think Denny Hamlin can stay consistent enough to win the Chase?
I do. I picked him as my darkhorse a few weeks ago.
is steve addington to blame for the 18 missing the chase or do you think some blame should be placed on kyle's schedule which contributed to the lack of quality time focused on making the 18 good?
I hate to blame any one person, and remember that same team won eight races in 2008.
QUESTION TO DAVID NEWTON AT 2.20 HI DAVID WHOYOUHAVE FOR DOVER SUNDAY
David, do you think Jeff Gordon will become a full partner of Hendrick motorsports when he retires in a couple of years.
He says he wants to play an active role. We'll see.
hey newt, pretty boring race again up there at louden, you think they should take louden out and add a road couse?
I like the idea of adding a road course, but I'm not sure New Hampshire is the track to move out. Maybe one of the mile and a halves. California perhaps.
Great story on JP and Chip. Do you think there is an element of racism and anti-Latino sentiment among the Juan Pablo detractors?
I haven't been made aware of any. You?
what does a team do with their old drivers hauler
Many are moved to the Nationwide or Truck Series, or simply sold. Never really given it much thought.
David - Another chase and once again JJ seems like an after thought. While we have seen a few token articles most of the focus is on others. Even now when there is a discussion about the best today he is an afterthought. His numbers though show he is not only the best since 2002 he has been dominant. What is it going to take to get the recognition he deserves?
He gets plenty from me. I've said all year he is the guy to beat until somebody knocks him off the mountain. If he wins this you might argue he's the best of all time, better than Earnhardt or Petty. Whoa! Did I say that?
2 weeks ago people were complaining that Junior wasn't supporting the troops by not participating in Tony's race. Well Junior, Jeff and Rick Hendrick are showing their support with the National Guards by participating in the service at the tomb of the unknown soldier and a visit to the Pentagon tomorrow.
Don't pay attention to people. Junior completely supports the troops. He's just not a dirt racer and it hasn't worked out for his schedule.
The in car camera on the #88 showed Dale losing it and sliding up into Reuitmann. What is you opinion? Was Dale at fault for causing that wreck at Loudon?
I'll be honest, I just saw a quick replay. I was watching four-lane top fuel and funny cars shake the earth at zMax Dragway.
With Childress losing Jack sponsorship does that mean a 3 car team again for 2010? What happens to the people who worked on Mears car?
If they can't find sponsorship they'll be forced to shrink to three, perhaps three and a half and run a partial with the fourth. I'm sure some of the people that work on Mears' car will be redistributed throughout the company.
Montoya is the best driver in Nascar he needs to learn how you close the deal but that is coming soon.
No argument here.
I read that there is going to be a meeting with Robbie Reiser and some Ford execs. Have you heard of any moves coming in the Roush stable, or do you have any insight into what this meeting will be regarding? Is it just the obvious that there cars are trash this season? Thanks
I'm sure Robbie has met with a lot of people this year with the way they're running. I'm not sure what the answer is. You may have to write it off to things run in cycles. Unless you're Hendrick, that is. Then you just run fast.
Just wanted to say great article today. Its about time people start realizing that the 42 Team is a legit contender. Do you think that people are jumping too quickly on the Martin Bandwagon?
Thank you. And I can't say they're jumping too quickly. He arguably has the fastest car in the garage and he's a great driver.
Why is Johnson critizing Nascar for the last yellow at Loudon?
He wasn't criticizing as much as he was just stating his opinion. He said in the article he didn't blame one person or group.
How do you see Jr. doing in the next few races after his showing last week. He seems to be improving, but can't catch a break. What are you thoughts on the direction of his team?
They have shown signs at times, but then something like last week happens to spoil it. The verdict remains out with me.
Hey Dave, My original question was irrelevant. So, Ryan seems to think there is another shakeup with the 88 team this off season, and I don't really think McGrew wants the job. What do you think about Ron Malec promoted to the 88 crew chief?
I agree there'll be another shakeup. And I've said Malec makes the most sense, but they are looking all over the place.
Do owners like Gibbs, Penske, Gannasi and Roush always predict their drivers will win the next race?
Hardly. They don't like to make predictions at all.
I looked to us like Dale Jr lost it and slide up into Reuitmann. What was you take of the 21st driver in points with Zero wins taking shots at the 16th place driver with 1 win?
Seems to be the recurring theme. I'll have to look at the replays again.
Is it too early to pick a chase winner? The last few chases have taught me that anything can truly happen. Even KK still has a chance to win it all... but good thing Kasey's middle name doesn't start with K!
I'm sticking with Johnson.
I am a huge JPM fan, but I don't feel as if Mark did him "dirty". It was just good smart driving, and Juan showed some class in not moving him, you are around the garage a lot do these 2 often talk during the weekend and hang out because it seems as if they both have a tremendous amount of respect for each other.
Totally agree. I think Montoya was just ticked he didn't push Mark a little harder at the end. But Juan would have done the same thing if the situation were reversed.
I'm going to ask all of the NASCAR chatters this before the week is over. What do you think of Bruton's latest temper tanrum over the $18 million worth of highway construction that Concord hasn't done?
Bruton always is pitching a temper tandrum for something. Are you surprised he is pitching one over this? Not me.
Why does Nascar allow fans to fly rebel flags at Nascar races when many people consider that flag to be a sign of racism and hatred?
It's a free country and people can do what they want, but I don't think it puts a pretty face on things.
Dave, I am a Eury fan, Just not with Dale Jr. Penske has 2 drivers now that he has A Lot of stock in, and it seems like no crew chiefs now. What about Eury going over to work with Keselowski at the cup level? Im originally from Brad's area in Michigan and want to see him have a succesful career in cup.
I really don't see Eury going to Penske. If he doesn't go to JR Motorsports he'll stay at Hendrick. Besides, Penske likes the white collar engineer type as crew chiefs. That's not Eury.
who do u think bobby labonte will drive for next year?
Wish you could tell me. There is some interest from EGR, but Jamie McMurray will appears to be the front-runner if sponsorship is found.
It there a more boring interview in all of Nascar than Mark Martin?
Plenty, but I won't name them. And I don't consider Martin a boring interview at all.
Does Jeff Gordon have a shot at the championship after this weekend?
do you think dale jr isn't a good fit for hendrick kinda like kyle busch wasn't. would he have been a better fit at JGR with Stewert when he made the move. Jr just doesn't seem to fit in with gordon and johnson
The other drivers really like Earnhardt, so I wouldn't say he's a bad fit. He's just having a bad season.
We have seen Kyle perform well but he always seem to unravel at some point. He may have the best raw talent in the sport but is he too emotional to be consistent for 36 races? Would he be better off in the IRL where the season is not as long?
No, Busch is just fine in NASCAR. And I disagree, I believe he's getting his act together.
Do you think we will see Bobby Labonte joining the other ex-cup drivers in Camping World Trucks in 2010?
He might have to consider it, but he thinks he still has a few more good years left in Cup. He's done well in the 71.
do you think that reed will either a cup/nationwide ride next year
I would hope somebody at least gives him a shot in Nationwide.
Great sdtory of EGR,David. Have you heard about other good sponsors interested of Montoya or the #1 in EGR?and with this good moment at EGR,will Chip resurge the #8 in 2010-11?
Nothing firm on sponsors. They'd like to get the 8 back on the track, but the focus is getting the 1 there first. Not sure I understand that totally. The 8 was the face of DEI.
With Mears possibly out at Childress, there's a rumor that sadler is taking the best buy and stanley sponsorship with him to Childress in a 4th car. Any truth??
Those sponsors have deals with RPM, so I don't see that happening. Remember, just because it's a rumor doesn't mean it's true.
We thought that Dale Jr showed a lack of class by blaming David Reuitmann for his own driving mistake. What was your take?
It was a bit out of character for him.
A wee bit early, but happy birthday...now your as old as me!
Don't remind me. But thanks.
With sponsors leaving more teams, and not a lot of new money coming in- is NASCAR considering any more rules to limit costs- or have they cut all they can?
Nothing major that I've heard. Keeping the testing ban was a good decision though.
David - as I constantly have to remind my 11 year old daugter... The cars don't go around in circles. They are ovals. Sometimes tri-ovals. Occasionally they turn left and right. But, they NEVER go around in circles. :-)
Thanks for that geometry lesson.
how much longer do you think robby gordon will survive being a single car team competing against mult-car teams.
Losing a major sponsor doesn't help. Maybe he can take over the 26 for Roush under his name.
I think Junior's in-car camera was showing him sliding up after Reutimann hit him. He had control of his car until the hit.
I'll have to trust you on that, but others seem to agree.
Why does Dale jr make so many late race mistakes like at Loudon? Is Dale's physical fitness the problem?
They've been working on the fitness deal. Otherwise, when you're having the kind of season he is problems just seem to pile up no matter what you do. I'm sure it's a combination of a few things.
David, give me your top 7 finishers in this year's chase after homestead! I'm anxious to see your top 7 list! I like Jimmie or Kurt for the title.
Johnson, Martin, Gordon, Hamlin, Montoya, Busch and Edwards.
In his interviews, Dale Jr seems to be bored and dis-interested in Nascar. How much longer do you expect Dale jr to race?
What is he, 35 now? At least another five to seven seasons.
David, any rumors on Kahne where he will be in 2011 I know Its early but ,Im sure kahne is tired of the crap.
Stewart-Haas Racing. That good?
A bit off the topics but I hope everything went alright at Duke
So far so good. A lot to get through still, but thanks.
I only got to see replays of Loudon. How was the attendence?
Will Kahne stay at rpm or go somewhere else in 2011 if so what are his possible options?
I like him going to Stewart-Haas.
do you think jr is not a good fit at hendrick kinda like kyle busch wasn't. Would he have been better off at JGR with stewert when he made the move.He doesn't seen like a good fit with gordon and johnson.
Think I answered this already, so check out below. It's not about being a bad fit though.
Is it just me or am I the most consistant parking valet on the circuit this year?
If Jr was on the top, Reuttiman on the Bottom, how could Jr slide up the track into reuttiman?? HAHA, is there another race being aired that I dont know about??
Thanks for the input.
David, What is the sporting event, race or otherwise, that you've attended and had the best time at?
Tiger Woods' first win at Augusta National. To top it off I got to play the course the Monday after.
How are people saying Jr slid up into reutimann but Jr was in the way outside line and Reut was under him. Unless im missing something, the outcome seems obvious
Think this has put this to rest.
Don't bother Newman, these guys saying that Jr. slid up are just messing with you.
I'll let you guys settle this one.
These same people asked the same questions about Bruton and new cc's for the 88 yesterday.
Maybe they didn't get the answer they wanted. I'm OK with it.
Any news about who will run the new Ford engine first?
I'm betting David Ragan. If two drivers get it Ragan and McMuraay. Since Ragan will use it next year and he's not in the Chase and McMurray is on his way out it only makes sense.
David reut-a-man apologized to jr so obviously he thought it was his fault
If that indeed happened then this case is closed. Thank you for another episode of CSI-Junior.
Do you expect Kyle Busch to win the Nationwide race Sat at Dover?
No reason to bet against him. He wins most of them doesn't he?
I'm from the north and have never considered the confederate flag to represent anything racial or hateful. I've always just felt the flag represented the South.
It does, but if it is offensive to a group of people I am not in favor of flying it.
Do you think Dale Jr made a huge mistake by leaving DEI, killing that team and going to Henrick where he isn't the 100% focus of attention?
It's easy to second-guess, but I believe Junior did what was healthiest for him.
Was Logano thrown into cup alittle to early. He has improved but do you think it may have hurt him.
Heck no. He's doing just fine. Take away those first six or seven races and he's in the top 15 easily. No better way to learn than from behind the wheel.
Have many of the final 9 cup races do you expect Kyle Busch to win and will Kyle be paying back Tony Stewart for what Tony did to him at Daytona?
I look for him to win one or two, but no payback to Tony. Now Vickers, retaliation against him wouldn't surprise me.
Do the drivers own the helicopters that transport them from the airports to the race tracks?
Some do. Some ride with other drivers. Some charter them.
David just FYI, Jr was running outside with Reutimann on the inside. How could he slide UP into anybody?
I think we have that clear now. Thanks.
I'm a huge Reutimann fan and he did wash up the track and make contact with Jr. What I had a problem with was Jr's comments that made it seem like Reutimann is some low class driver that is always wrecking people. I hardly think that's the case. Need we remind Jr. he took out a lot of good cars in the Daytona 500 this year?
Well, there is that. Not sure I can add anything to that.
What happened to Aric Almirola? He is way better that Brad K but didn't get the chance to prove himself in good cars.
He's driving in a few truck races and hoping something opens up in Cup again.
Looks like we can say goodbye Casey Mears. Where does Casey go from here? Nationwide?
If he is gone, I'm not sure he'll have a lot of options. He's already been with one of the best organizations in the business. There's no going up from there.
Do you think that if Roger Penske offered Ron Malec a good deal to cc the 2 next year that he would take the job?
Money does talk. What you have in mind?
David, am I the only one seeing a big shake-up at RPM after 2010, with possibly the Roush developmental drivers (Stenhouse, Darnell, Braun) taking Sadler's or someone else's spot at RPM?
Not sure about the drivers, but I do see a major shakeup. Major.
The Jr haters are out in full force today, blaming him for getting run over by Reutimann the same exact way Burton did earlier in the race. You cant slide UP into somebody thats INSIDE of you
This one already has been taken care of Mike. Thanks though.
I think Junior blamed David because he knew he had a good car for once and wanted to see where he could finish the race, possibly compete for the win. Its hard for any driver to control emotions when interviewed right after an accident as we have seen many times this year.
Good point. And he did have a car that was at least capable of a top five.
Welp, Time to enjoy another day at work in the NAVY. So, here's one last question. Is one single off season with a Hendrick groomed crew chief enough time to make him a multie-race winner and a real championship contender next year?
People would pay if I had the answer to that. Unfortunately, I do not. If you are asking if I think he'll contend for a title next year . . . hmmmm . . . no.
Whats up with Truex he had a fast car sunday and couldnt do anything with it and Montoya almost won, is he just going to end up like another Jaime McMurray or a Casey Mears?
The 1 car has had issues all season, even when fast in qualifying. But Truex has made the Chase. McMurray and Mears have not.
How do people say Kyle is better than Kurt when Kurt has more wins, top 5's, top 10's, poles, and a championship? Even though he's been racing longer. I mean, he even made the chase and Kyle didn't. Just wondering haha
I agree, it's hard to argue the numbers. I think Kyle gets the nod because of potential.
What sort of reception do these start and park guys get in the garage from the real drivers that are there to actually race and not just get their money and head home?
Honestly, it's barely talked about.
Why do you have so much trouble replying to the appropriate comment?
I just post and answer. Apparently sometimes I am a bit fast and it muddles the water. I am trying to get to as many questions as possible, but it appears I must slow down again.
What did Delana Harvick have to say about her employee, Hornaday, not following team orders to move over for her husband?
I think Kevin said it all. Lack of communication.
How much do the teams sell old COT's with engine and running for?
I've heard some are ridiculously low, like $20,000.
Is there something wrong with Mark Martin's feet? At the winners press conference, a reporter asked him what was going on with the feet... Mark said it was nothing. What were they talking about?
I wasn't there, but think they were enamoured with his shoes. Nothing wrong with his feet.
Good chat, now I'm off to make lasagna
Good idea. I am outta here as well. Thanks for stopping by. See you next week.
