Chat with David Thorpe

David Thorpe
  (12:00 PM)

Hi everyone, glad to be back. Almost every player is with their teams, and camp opens within a week for everybody. Let's catch up. To celebrate my return, I'm playing Mozart's famous comedic opera, "Le Nozze de Figaro" (The Marriage of Figaro). "If hate was people, I'd be China".

James (Boston)

Barbosa, Frye, Lopez, Amundsun, Dudley, Griffin, Tucker, Dragic

David Thorpe
  (12:01 PM)

Who is, the reason the Suns will not have a great season?

becka (virginia)

where will david lee end up next year

David Thorpe
  (12:01 PM)

Knicks this year. Not sure after that.

Hook (Southern Maryland)

Do you think Arenas can come back and be the player he was before his knee injury? If not, how close can he get to his old self?

David Thorpe
  (12:02 PM)

I think it's possible, but we have to give him 'til January to get the flow back, don't we?

Brandon (Utah)

Any trade rumors going on? What is a reasonable stat line for Iggy this year?

David Thorpe
  (12:02 PM)

I'm not up on the rumors, sorry. I'd expect Iggy to do what he did last year, after November.

RAYGORDONREID ( CASPER WY 82601)

QUESTION TO DAVID THROPE AT 12.2O PM HI DAVID HOWS MY NUGGGETS GONNA DO THIS YEAR

David Thorpe
  (12:04 PM)

Man, I stop chatting for a bit and people forget how to spell my name. Sad. The Nugs should be good, maybe very good. Losing Kleiza impacts the team on the court and off. But I like their additions.

Shawn (Sacramento)

Will Omri be able to contribute to the Kings this year?

David Thorpe
  (12:05 PM)

Ultimately, yes. There is a big learning curve he has to go through. But he's an excellent shooter, passer, and energy guy. His toughness will help him earn his coach's trust.

Jeff (Miami)

Thoughts on Michael Beasley, both as a person and player this season?

David Thorpe
  (12:08 PM)

You know, I'm reading "Wired", the story of John Belushi, after reading the biography of Chris Farley last month. Beasley is not at all related to them and their horrible drug problems. Not even close. But both books reminded me of the importance of "friends", and in both of those comedians' cases, the friends let the talent get in the way of intervention of a meaningful kind. Thankfully the NBA acted, and we can hope Beasley will prosper and mature into a star scorer.

Charles (Dayton, Ohio)

Good Afternoon DavidWhat do you think of the impending nuptials of Lamar Odom and Kloe Kardasian. Only in LaLa land

David Thorpe
  (12:08 PM)

I can only hope LO and his partner have a long and pleasant marriage. Far stranger things have happened.

Luis (Mexico)

Please comment on the Jordan HOF speech. Everyone seems to be bashing him for being honest. Before he used to get bashed for not being himself and being all "commercial" all the time. The way I see it, he went up there and explained what motivated him to do what he did (mostly his competitive drive and his detractors on and off the court). What is the big deal? Weve always known he isnt Mother Theresa, but he isnt a bad person either. People need to chill.

David Thorpe
  (12:09 PM)

Forest Gump said it best.

Jason (Ellicott City, MD)

Will Durant be in MVP discussions this year and who is your ROY pick?

David Thorpe
  (12:09 PM)

Not this year, OKC just won't be good enough. ROY fave is Blake G. and Ty Evans.

Jesse (Detroit)

Do the Pistons make the playoffs this season?

David Thorpe
  (12:10 PM)

25% chance

Bryan (Ohio)

Any word on whats going to happen with delonte west?

David Thorpe
  (12:10 PM)

Not yet. He is troubled, and my heart goes out to him and his family.

Andy (Denver)

Will Coby Karl play in the NBA? Is he good enough?

David Thorpe
  (12:12 PM)

Yes, he's good enough. I hope so. I tweeted as much this summer. I'd like to see him smile more, have more fun on the court.

Chad (Austin)

10 minutes into the chat and no bans yet..your losing your touch

David Thorpe
  (12:12 PM)

You want a fresh one?

Richard Jefferson (San Antonio, TX)

Will I be the missing piece to vault the Spurs to another championship?!

David Thorpe
  (12:13 PM)

No, they needed more than one piece. But yes, together, the Spurs may have enough.

Tim Tebow (FL)

If I give a cliche-ridden rah rah speech, will you proclaim me greatest leader of all time?

David Thorpe
  (12:14 PM)

You've already earned that, in college football terms anyway.

Bill P. (Austin, TX)

Thorpe, I hate you man. I do. I used to play a great lunch time pickup game with my friends every Wednesday, but quit 2 years ago because I was addicted to your chats. So I finally get back in gear this summer, when you stopped chatting, and am in good shape. Now you return. And my jumper is sure to head south again. My friends are peeved today, so please make this chat worthwhile.

David Thorpe
  (12:15 PM)

I'll do my best. But for the record, you can play hoops and then read this chat later. They do not take it down.

Mark (VA)

What are the Cavs' chances to win it all this year?

David Thorpe
  (12:15 PM)

Decent, at best. I think they need a stretch 4, and I'm concerned about their interior defense. And their starting 2 guard.

Christopher (Germany)

Glad you're back (regularly from now on?) and hope you had a great time. Did you follow the European Championship. Spain looked like the real deal to me. They will challenge the US next summer.

David Thorpe
  (12:17 PM)

I did follow it. And I had to laugh at all the Rubio haters out there. Clearly, he's not ready to light up the NBA, statistically speaking. But in his role as quarterback, the dude just won a big title and I'm not sure if he's even 19 yet.

david (NJ)

Rank these teams in order from best to worst please-Spurs, Lakers, Celtics, Cavs, Magic

David Thorpe
  (12:18 PM)

In November, I'll guess:1. Boston2. Lakers3. Spurs4. Cavs5. Magic

Mike (LA)

Artest>Ariza, and I don't think it is close.

David Thorpe
  (12:19 PM)

I do.

Karl (Los Angeles, Ca)

How do you think Orlando will do with VC this coming season. Think they are better off?

David Thorpe
  (12:19 PM)

Not in the short term. but SVG will figure things out in short order. But by February, if healthy, they'll be contending again.

Michael C's (East LA, Ca)

you never answered the question up top What do you think of Durant? ROY thoughts?thanksorpe

David Thorpe
  (12:20 PM)

Sorry-no to MVP for KD this year. OKC not good enough yet. Griffin and Evans are the faves, as of today.

Jim (Brooklyn)

Welcome back, Thorpe. I was wondering why some players who seem to have all the athletic ability in the world never pan out as NBA players? What is the main factor here - work ethic? basketball IQ?

David Thorpe
  (12:21 PM)

Both of those, yes, plus low emotional IQ, or just bad luck with the team or coach they have.

David (MO)

What are your thoughts on the Mavericks making some noise in the West, assuming Marion and Gooden contribute?

David Thorpe
  (12:21 PM)

I agree. I'm excited to see them play.

Jesse (Taipei)

Jordan vs. Russell.. who wins?

David Thorpe
  (12:22 PM)

MJ by a mile.

Dave (MN)

Life is a box of chocolates or I am not a smart man but I know what love is?

David Thorpe
  (12:22 PM)

I was thinking "stupid is as stupid does".

Marc (Big D)

Is Gordon's move northeast this summer going to have more of an impact of the Bulls or Pistons?

David Thorpe
  (12:23 PM)

In the short term, the Bulls. He bailed them out of so many bad offensive sets. But they will adjust.

Clipper Fan (Istanbul, Turkey)

Why won't we make the playoffs this year?thak you sir.

David Thorpe
  (12:24 PM)

Still too much inconsistency on the perimeter and swing positions.

Andy (Denver)

So, at this stage are you thinking Lakers - Boston finals?

David Thorpe
  (12:25 PM)

Honestly, I'm not thinking about the Finals at all. It's just too far away.

Brian (Portland)

Thoughts on Brandon Roy shedding 10-15 pounds in the off-season?

David Thorpe
  (12:26 PM)

I always like guys to lean out while building strength.

Sean (LA)

David - Unlike some people on ESPN.com please show that you have a wealth of NBA knowledge! Please tell me you think the Lakers are the best team in the NBA. There should be not 1 reason to think so long as Ron Ron has his head on straight the Lakers are not considerably better! They won the title last year with nothing from AB so if he improves and Ron Ron this team can be scary good.

David Thorpe
  (12:27 PM)

They may be the best team, but there are many reasons to think they are not.

Terry (Frisco, Texas)

Is Stephen Curry as good as he appeared in college and will he be successful in his transition to point guard in your opinion?

David Thorpe
  (12:27 PM)

His shot selection in Vegas was awful. My guess is, it will take some time for him to learn how to score efficiently.

Sam (NYC)

Ok, follow along everyone. Thorpe has been chatting for 3 years, and we all love how he packs a lot of punch in few words. Fewer than 140 characters, to be exact. So then Twitter takes over. Is there a connection? Is Thorpe getting royalty checks? Hmmm...

David Thorpe
  (12:28 PM)

No, and no. But yes, you are not the first person to point out that similarity.

Craig G. (Fairfield, California)

Any rookie draft picks you are especially excited about after seeing the summer leagues?

David Thorpe
  (12:29 PM)

All of them. I think Marcus Thornton can be an excellent sleeper guy to watch.

vinny del negro (chicago)

Do you think the bulls are a playoff team?

David Thorpe
  (12:29 PM)

Without doubt.

Karl (Traverse City, Mi)

Here is what I don't get. For years we killed David Robinson for being soft and told everyone to "be like Mike". Now we kill Jordan for being the ultimate winner and label Robinson as classy. Is there no way to make the media happy?

David Thorpe
  (12:31 PM)

It's far too simple. When you are being inducted to the Hall of Fame, "thank you" should be the most common phrase uttered. He was not playing a game, he was giving a speech.

David Thorpe
  (12:31 PM)

It's far too simple. When you are being inducted to the Hall of Fame, "thank you" should be the most common phrase uttered. He was not playing a game, he was giving a speech.

vinny del negro (chicago)

what do you think of Salmon's ability to play shooting guard for the bulls? should we start kirk hinrich at the 2?

David Thorpe
  (12:31 PM)

I'd prefer Kirk.

Mark (Clark, NJ)

Dave, Welcome back. Do you yearn? Well, I yearn. And I yearn for Brook Lopez to become one of the best centers in the league. Can he develop into one this season or next?

David Thorpe
  (12:32 PM)

Yes, but don't expect him to get there this season.

SteveFitz (Cicero, IL)

Were James Johnson and Taj Gibson enough or do the Bulls still need to make a splash to take that next step?

David Thorpe
  (12:33 PM)

This team is far enough along to not have to depend on mid-to-late first rounder to make a splash. They need their vets to step up.

Matt (NYC)

Do you think Mike Beasley can be an NBA three?

David Thorpe
  (12:34 PM)

Yes, on offense.

guinness (NY)

Any thoughts on Ty Lawson's role this year? What kind of player will he pan out to be? Bench, average, serviceable, all-star or elite?

David Thorpe
  (12:34 PM)

He looked just ok this summer, but I think he can be dynamic off the bench.

John (Cleveland)

What head coaches's jobs are threatened if their teams don't get off to a good start?

David Thorpe
  (12:35 PM)

Based on what reporters tell me, all eye's are on Chicago.

Pierre (NYC)

Do you think Kwame Brown could have developed into an impact player had he not landed with the Wizards (and under Jordan)? How much of a developing player's psyche is governed by "the right circumstance"?Thanks, and welcome back!

David Thorpe
  (12:37 PM)

That's the best question I've ever read. Great job. The answer is, "a ton". Not for everyone-LBJ, Wade, Kobe-they would have been stars in any system. But most players need help. Kwame got none.

David Thorpe
  (12:37 PM)

That's the best question I've ever read. Great job. The answer is, "a ton". Not for everyone-LBJ, Wade, Kobe-they would have been stars in any system. But most players need help. Kwame got none.

John (Texas)

What have Loul Deng and Noah worked on with you?

David Thorpe
  (12:38 PM)

Luol stayed in Chicago to recover from his stress fracture. Joakim was here in June working on parts of his shot and developing a plan to score in the post.

Matt (NYC)

You finally picked my question and you didn't answer it! Your bro would not be happy with such blatant neglect of the Miami Heat....

David Thorpe
  (12:39 PM)

I did answer it!! There is a problem with the system sometimes, so I guess some of my answers are disappearing. Sorry.

Sergio (Madrid [Spain])

David, what Rubio haters are you talking about? Spain won despite Rubio, not because of Rubio. They had the best players in the tournament next to him, you can replace Ricky with about 10 other PG and they still would've won it all.

David Thorpe
  (12:40 PM)

Perhaps. Perhaps not. But he did win it all, as the starting pg, right?

Dan (Hong Kong)

What team is gonna have a better record at the end of the season: Toronto Raptors or Washington Wizards? Also, can you please send an autograph picture of yourself to Hong Kong? We are big fans.

David Thorpe
  (12:41 PM)

I'd lean to the Raps. As for Hong Kong, my wife and I are celebrating our 20th anniversary next summer, perhaps we'll take a visit?!!

Mully (Oakland)

What are your expectations of Anthony Randolph and Brandon Wright this year? Will Nellie finally let is horses run wild?

David Thorpe
  (12:42 PM)

Randolph, hotsy totsy. Wright, hotsy notsy.

Nick (Minneapolis)

Does someone have to be a big name to train with you or could anyone off the street with enough cash get a lesson?

David Thorpe
  (12:43 PM)

We train pro's of all levels. NBA guys making millions a year to new pro's who'll earn a few grand a month in Europe.

jason (columbia,sc)

you are going really slow. faster. faster.

David Thorpe
  (12:43 PM)

It's not me, I promise.

Mo (Queens)

As someone pointed out earlier that you must be an insider to have your questions answered...is it right? Just curious!!!

David Thorpe
  (12:44 PM)

I don't know. There is no insider tag on the questions I'm looking at.

David (Hotlanta)

Going off what you said earlier re: Kwame Brown and support, is that why the Thunder are thought to have such a good future? Are they doing a good a job as any franchise has of supporting their young talent? Are they title contenders 3 years from now?

David Thorpe
  (12:45 PM)

Yes, excellent point. They are developing their assets as best as they can. They could be contenders in 3 years, yes. Presti still has to make some magic happen.

Sergio (Madrid [Spain])

Wohooo, So Luc Longley the greatest C in history

David Thorpe
  (12:45 PM)

How do you say "now you are being ridiculous" in spanish?

Josh S (Houston)

Why in the world did the rockets get rid of james white... he struggled with turnovers, but was great in everything else when he played

David Thorpe
  (12:46 PM)

That's funny. My response when I read that was "why is Denver trading for this guy"?

Marc (Big D)

Building off the Thunder question, was Harden the right pick for them?

David Thorpe
  (12:46 PM)

Oh yea.

Chris (OKC)

Does anyone who has actually seen an NBA game the last couple of years actually think that replacement refs would be a bad thing? Need I remind people of the Heat-Mavs final a couple of years ago.

David Thorpe
  (12:47 PM)

I think NBA players are a lot like Wayne and Garth. They fear change.

jason (columbia,sc)

If you "create a player" as a franchise player, what position would he be?

David Thorpe
  (12:48 PM)

He'd be a 6'9 pg with sick passing and leadership skills. And he'd have a really cool nickname.

Chris (Holmdel, NJ)

David, do we Knick fans have anything to look forward to in 2009 and beyond? Things still look dismal to me.

David Thorpe
  (12:48 PM)

At the end of each day, just think "we have Mike D, we have Mike D".

Joe (New York)

At this point, is Derrick Rose's ceiling more likely to be Isiah Thomas or a fully-realized Penny Hardaway (not meant as a diss, healthy Penny was incredible)?

David Thorpe
  (12:50 PM)

I think Thomas is a bit too high, as of right now. I'm not ready to proclaim Rose as a legit HOF talent. He needs more seasoning. But yes, he could end up being that.

Ryan (Worcester, MA)

"He'd be a 6'9 pg with sick passing and leadership skills. And he'd have a really cool nickname."would King James do as the nickname?

David Thorpe
  (12:50 PM)

I was thinking a more "magical" name.

Matt H (Phx, AZ)

IF they stay healthy, the Spurs have a _____% chance to win it all.

David Thorpe
  (12:51 PM)

18.6

Alex (Littleton, CO)

Tell him "Venga, Tio. No te creas"

David Thorpe
  (12:51 PM)

Gracias.

John (Dallas)

Does Josh Howard have the handles and shot to succeed at the 2 spot?

David Thorpe
  (12:51 PM)

I don't think that's his best spot.

mike (philly)

hey thorpe. with so many nba players trusting your nba knowledge to make them better players, have any GMs approached you for hire as an asst coach?

David Thorpe
  (12:53 PM)

Yes, but I've always been very clear that my career path will not include any bench coaching. At least until my twins are in college, and then it's still highly doubtful. There is too much of the world my wife and I plan to see.

Klint (Kansas City)

What are the Pacers chances of reaching the postseason?

David Thorpe
  (12:53 PM)

Not good.

Nate (Madison)

I know summer league is summer leauge but Brandon Jennings and Jodie Meeks really performed well there. Do the Bucks have a sum what future ahead of themselves (future as in 2 years) after restructuring their roster?

David Thorpe
  (12:53 PM)

I think so, yes.

Mo (Detroit, MI)

Does Ryan Anderson crack Orlando's rotation this year?

David Thorpe
  (12:54 PM)

Yes, he's the perfect backup to Lewis.

zack ((Camby) Indiana)

What are the chances the great MJ returns? Could he have a good impact on a loaded team, if he came off the bench for 12-15 minutes a night?

David Thorpe
  (12:54 PM)

Zero.

jason (columbia,sc)

Thorpe, I was wonderin'. Who has the worst breath in the league. I know its a silly question, but who wants to smell bad breath when their being trashed talked to. I'm gonna go with Artest or Arenas

David Thorpe
  (12:55 PM)

I'd lean to Sheed.

Ron (Portland, ME)

The Kwame question was great. Look at what the Celtic's did with Perkins. Could have gone either way but they get major props (as does he) for making himself a legit player.

David Thorpe
  (12:55 PM)

Great point!!

Alex (Littleton, CO)

What was the deal with Coby Karl playing for 2 summer league teams? Can anyone sign him, or do the Nuggets have any sort of "dibs"?

David Thorpe
  (12:56 PM)

No dibs. He's a free agent.

Joe (Davis)

David! Good to have you back! What are your thoughts on Stephan Jackson fleecing the hapless Golden State management into guaranteeing him an additional $30 million and then demanding a trade? Can anyone (fans, management, other teams) forgive him?

David Thorpe
  (12:57 PM)

He's really a great teammate, but his off court antics leave a lot to be desired.

Justin (Ohio)

Thoughts on LO and the fat Kardashian chick getting married?

David Thorpe
  (12:58 PM)

I've never seen who he is marrying. But judging her by her looks makes you a moron. Everyone deserves a partner who loves them unconditionally, and who helps them deal with the realities of life. I hope LO has found that kind of partner.

John (Dallas)

David, Darren Collison looked very good in the summer league, problem is he's behind a greate one. Do you see the Hornets tradign him in the future or leaving him on the bench to wither away?

David Thorpe
  (12:59 PM)

On the contrary, I'm excited about DC and Thornton coming off the bench together and sparking that 2nd unit.

Kanye West (Hollywood, CA)

Ima let you finish Coach Thorpe, but John Hollinger has the best chats ever!

David Thorpe
  (1:00 PM)

Finally, you say something that makes sense.

Alex (Ottawa)

Was Bargs end to last season for real? Is he the key to the raptors success this season?

David Thorpe
  (1:00 PM)

Yes, and yes.

Randy (St. Paul)

How good is Johnny Flynn?

David Thorpe
  (1:01 PM)

Very good, but I'm not sure he's a strong starter for a playoff team. I need to see him more. But he's a great leader and has a chance to be special.

Tim (Vegas)

What do you expect out of Tyrus Thomas this year?

David Thorpe
  (1:02 PM)

I hope he builds on last year, takes a few fewer jumpers, rebounds more, and gets along better with Vinny.

David Thorpe
  (1:03 PM)

That's it for today. Thanks everyone. I hope to be back next Wednesday. Have a great week. Be safe.
