Chat with Pat Yasinskas

Rob (Australia)

If the Panthers don?t make the playoffs, is John Fox out?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:52 PM)

I say Fox has to make the playoffs to keep his job. I don't think there's a lot of patience because he's never had back-to-back winning seasons. All right, let's get this chat rolling

Kevin (Houston, TX)

PAT! what do you say we start a couple of minutes early??

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:52 PM)

We are. Fire away.

kevin harper (las vegas )

when will people give the saints some credit for being a good team i always hear people giving the saints excuses for why they won!

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:53 PM)

I think the Saints already are good. They win Sunday, there's no denying them.

Griffin (Phoenix, Arizona)

Love your work, Pat. Lets say the Buccs end up with a top 10 draft pick (and it looks like they will), do they draft the best defensive player available or do they address a specific position of need? Also, I know Morris is preaching to stick to the defensive plan, but can these guys really get exponentially better on D over the course of this season or do they need an overhaul in personnel?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:54 PM)

I know it may not look like it right now, but the plan was to use the money to address offense this year and defense next year. They'll work on the defense in the offseason.

Rob (Australia)

What were the details of Jon Beason?s emotional speech after the Panthers v Cowboys game?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:54 PM)

Believe his speech was BEFORE the game. Not sure anything said after that game really would help much.

Lloyd (Baton Rouge, LA)

Hey Pat, Why do I feel very confident about the Saints and also like they can lose the very next game they play? I've had this feeling for every game after the Lions game. But in the end they win. Could it be because I'm just used to that big let down as a long-time Saints fan?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:55 PM)

Yes, it's probably just a habit because of history. But, Lloyd, I truly think this is a different New Orleans team this year. Looking forward to seeing it up close on Sunday.

Tyler (Greenville, NC)

let's face it pat, the panthers ain't sniffing the playoffs! assuming jerry richardson knows what needs to be done(fire john fox), does he go after an offensive minded coach or another defensive guy? who would you go after if you were jerry?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:57 PM)

My guess is an offensive coordinator from somewhere. Just throwing out a name -- Mike Mularkey. Not saying that will be the guy, but just throwing out a name.

Drew (Clearwater, FL)

Do you think that the Bucs' defense rebounds this week from the past 3 horrendous performances?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:57 PM)

Can't get much worse and I don't think the Redskins are particularly sharp on offense.

Rob (Australia)

Is newly signed Panthers DT Hollis Thomas going to help the Panthers defense?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:58 PM)

Yes, he will. They should have signed somebody like him (in other words, big) as soon as Kemo went down.

James (Temple, GA)

Pat, if you were the Falcons Coaching staff, what are a few things you would be concentrating on this bye week?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:59 PM)

Getting the running game going again would be No. 1. Then, getting Tye Hill up to speed so he might be able to help the secondary.

SprungOnSports (Long Island)

What are the realistic expectations for Josh Johnson on Sunday and this season if he remains the starter?

Pat Yasinskas
  (2:00 PM)

You might be pleasantly surprised. Not saying he's gonna throw for 400 yards, but I think he might bring a bit of spark to that offense.

Troy (New Orleans)

Do you think Mike Bell will be the number one back once he is healthy? Pierre looked great in the second half, but it was against a tired defense.

Pat Yasinskas
  (2:00 PM)

Think they're basically the same guy. Doesn't hurt to have two guys like that. They'll need them both.

Paul Cline (Greensboro, NC)

Hi Pat, obviously Hollis Thomas signing with Carolina has made it's rounds by now and everyone knows, so what is it that the Panthers think they can get from him besides Experience? I mean do you tell him just to fall down on a lineman? He wasn't exactly that good for the Rams.

Pat Yasinskas
  (2:01 PM)

Big thing is he's 340. The other guys they had were like 305. Just the added weight means he takes up more attention from the o-line. Face it, Kemo was far from being special. He was just a big guy and they've missed that.

Jason (Jacksonville)

Hey Pat do you know the rule for trading away a franchised tagged player?

Pat Yasinskas
  (2:02 PM)

I'd have to look it up to be certain. But I don't think you can trade a franchised guy during the season if he's signed his tender.

Brian (Salisbury, MD)

Who is more likely to get resigned Cadillac or Antonio Bryant?

Pat Yasinskas
  (2:03 PM)

Cadillac right now. AB needs to get on the field and show something.

Kevin N (Houston TX)

think the bucs should get marvin harrison?

Pat Yasinskas
  (2:04 PM)

No, they're going with youth.

Easy (Carolina)

Hey Pat, someone told me John Fox is at 5-1 odds to be the 1st NFL Coach fired this season. Should I get a piece of that action, or are the Panthers going to turn the season around?

Pat Yasinskas
  (2:04 PM)

It's an uphill battle. Panthers have to make playoffs for Fox to stay. Chances of making playoffs after 0-3 start aren't real good.

Easy (Carolina)

Pat, is Peppers trying his hardest or is he just coasting? $500,000 per tackle is just a lot to be paying anyone!

Pat Yasinskas
  (2:05 PM)

Let's just say he doesn't look like a "high-motor guy" to me.

Jason (Jacksonville)

Thanks for the answer. If the injury excuse has worked other years for Fox whats to say it doesn't work this year?

Pat Yasinskas
  (2:07 PM)

He got a free pass the year Jake went down. You only get that once. They made the decisions to put them right at the salary cap. You gotta live and die by that.

Matt (NC)

Thomas Davis looks good this year. Any chance he gets a contact extension?

Pat Yasinskas
  (2:08 PM)

He has looked good. But I don't think the Panthers are looking at the long term right now.

Matt H (Orlando)

Pat, If the Buc's have the 1st pick in the 2010 can they afford to pass up the best QB or are we stuck with Freeman regardless?

Pat Yasinskas
  (2:08 PM)

They've got to go defense. Got enough invested in offense.

Rob (Australia)

Is Everette Brown really going to be the DE end of the future for the panthers? I know it's early, but he hasn't shown me much and it looks like he's going to have a bigger role next season if Pep leaves.

Pat Yasinskas
  (2:09 PM)

If you're the Panthers, you can't even think about next year right now. You don't even know who will be running that show.

James (Temple, GA)

Pat, doesn't Turners slow start have more to do with DEF's stacking the box then it does with Turner being tired or some idiotic curse?

Pat Yasinskas
  (2:10 PM)

Yes, I think so. I think you need to give it a few more games before you can say that last year wore him out.

Rob (Australia)

Ron Meeks? new defense doesn?t seem to be working for the Panthers. It seems like the defensive line gets no pressure on the QB and gets bullied on running plays, the secondary looks slow and they can?t tackle. Is Meeks new defense causing the problem?

Pat Yasinskas
  (2:11 PM)

Think that's a big part of it. I know fans wanted Trgovac run out of town, but I didn't think he was a bad coordinator.

Alan (New Orleans)

Pat, any debauchery planned for your trip to NOLA?

Pat Yasinskas
  (2:12 PM)

Nah, still trying to recover from cold or flu I got in Atlanta a couple weeks ago. Just going to cover the game and stay out of trouble.

Lloyd (Baton Rouge, LA)

Hey Pat, I haven't watched any of the Panthers game, but are they running the ball enough? I figure it should be the goal of the team to lead with their strong-suit and it seems as though their passing more than they should be.

Pat Yasinskas
  (2:13 PM)

You would think. But they've gone away from the run, sometimes even before they fell behind. I thought that was the big mistake they made in the playoff game last season.

LR (MEXICO)

Do u think the Saints will give Jammal Brown a big contract this offseason, assuming there is a collective bargain agreement? What do u think they will do with Brown because of Strief and Bushrod and they're habit of letting their OL go like Faine, Bentley, and Naole? What do u think they would do with that money instead of signing brown?

Pat Yasinskas
  (2:14 PM)

I'd be cautious with Brown because of the injuries. Gotta see what happens with the labor situation.

Matt (NC)

Will Antonio Bryant be worth anything this season?

Pat Yasinskas
  (2:14 PM)

If you're counting on him for your fantasy team, pick up somebody else.

J Rozz (tampa)

Pat say Josh Johnson turns out to be a stud QB with his tight sprials and soft touch and scrambling abilty do the Bucs trade Freeman in the off season to a QB hungry team for a late first or early second round pick?

Pat Yasinskas
  (2:15 PM)

Let's see that happen before we even start thinking about the possibilities.

Stacy (New Orleans)

Pat, do you put your game-day predictions up on the site anywhere? If so, is there a place we can see them for previous weeks?

Pat Yasinskas
  (2:16 PM)

No, I don't do game predictions. There are enough other people on our site that do that.

Richard (Ann Arbor)

What did Gregg Williams do to get Will Smith and Charles Grant back to playing like Will Smith and Charles Grant?

Pat Yasinskas
  (2:16 PM)

Wish I knew. What ever he's doing, it's working. Hope it continues.

Bill (Laplace,LA)

Pat, how do you think Bushrods absence will affect the Saints gameplan this week?

Pat Yasinskas
  (2:17 PM)

Not really. I don't think there's much difference between Bushrod and Strief.

Dylan J (dutch harbor, alaska)

Why has ronde barber fallen off so much? is it the man to man system or is it mostly age? and is derrick brooks a hall of famer? hes got some good credentials

Pat Yasinskas
  (2:18 PM)

Brooks is definitely a Hall of Famer. Age is somewhat catching up to Ronde, but I'd say it's more that he doesn't have great players around him anymore.

CC (Atlanta)

What do players and coaches do on bye weeks? Do the players take a break in the Bahamas or Mexico or do they still work out at team HQs?

Pat Yasinskas
  (2:19 PM)

Coaches pretty much work right through it. Players get a couple days off and they go where they want to go.

Wally (Los Angeles)

Pat, how would you grade the Saints rookies (Jenkins and Morestead) after 3 games?

Pat Yasinskas
  (2:19 PM)

Pretty good. Jenkins has done some good things on special teams and Morestead's punted well. Look for more things from Jenkins as a CB as year goes on.

Jared (Charlotte )

Why dont you think the Panthers dont go after Garcia? I know they have AJ Feely but dont you think Jeff Garcia would be alot better than Delhomme? I know Jake has playerd better the last 2 games but I also dont think he is exactly helping us win games.. what do you think?

Pat Yasinskas
  (2:20 PM)

Jeff Garcia's not going to solve your problems. There are reasons why he's available right now -- like he's old and not all that good.

Adam (Columbia SC)

Pat, as a panther fan is it time to panic or just be patient and wait and see how we play after the bye?

Pat Yasinskas
  (2:21 PM)

You don't have much choice but to wait. The three games coming out of the bye aren't that hard on paper. If you lose them, then you've got real problems.

Dale (Dade City, Fl)

pat im worried about the bucs. how do you feel about them?

Pat Yasinskas
  (2:21 PM)

Natrual to be worried. But give them a few weeks and see if you start seeing any progress. They are rebuilding and that takes time.

Eric (Atlanta)

As a season ticket holder, should I be worried about the loss to the Pats? Or was that a market correction?

Pat Yasinskas
  (2:22 PM)

Market correction.

Jay (Raleigh NC)

Pat,I was thinking...the Panthers are tied for the league's worst record, and if they kept loosing at least we could get the #1 draft pick for next year. Then Everette Brown thoughts entered my brain and I realized we traded our pick away. Did we write any clauses into that trade that we get to keep our pick if it is in the top (bottom) 10?

Nick (Tampa)

For the BUCS! -- So you say go D in the Draft, best Available or specific position? Who are some highly touted College D prospects in your opinion? (lol a that Garcia Comment... who knew Pat Yas has some humor in him)

Pat Yasinskas
  (2:24 PM)

I'm not up on the draft yet. Hit me back with that in February or March.

Digga (Metairie, LA.)

In your opinion which team in the NFC SOUTH has the best coaching staff?

Pat Yasinskas
  (2:24 PM)

Atlanta.

JP (South Cackalac)

Pat, would you agree the biggest problem is Fox, Davidson and Meeks and not the talent on the field. It looks like the coaches do there best to put the Panthers in a position to fail. Last time we saw a coaching staff that wanted to run the ball was before the playoffs last year.......they have elected to get away from it and have not been forced.

Pat Yasinskas
  (2:25 PM)

Like your point of view. Panthers have plenty of talent from a personnel standpoint. You might have nailed it.

Atchyoo (Big Ern's Room)

If the Panthers miss the play-offs, can you envision any scenario where Jake Delhomme is still on the roster next season?

Pat Yasinskas
  (2:26 PM)

Nope, absolutely not.

Easy (Carolina)

Pat, did you catch the Swine Flu at the Detroit-Redskins game last week? Can we officialluy call Dwayne Jarrett a bust now, or is it that Fox and Friends aren't giving him a legitimate shot? Part of Jake'swoes has to be only having Smitty to rely on as a true play-maker.

Pat Yasinskas
  (2:27 PM)

Look at it this way, no other receiver has been able to be a force in that offense. Might have something to do with Smith and coaching staff.

Wally (Los Angeles)

Not being a bitchy Saints fan... but could you elaborate why you think Atl has a better staff then New Orleans with offensive guru Payton finally teamed with a D Coordinator worth anything?

Pat Yasinskas
  (2:29 PM)

Payton is a great offensive mind. And I do like Williams. But I'm not sold on Payton as a head coach yet. Atlanta's staff is strong all the way through -- with a couple former head coaches in there.

BUCK (AZ)

Hey Pat, Steve Smith has seemed really emotional lately, even mad sometimes. One game it looked as if he was yelling at Jake. Any news?

Pat Yasinskas
  (2:30 PM)

He's always been emotional. Seems even more so now. This is something to keep an eye on.

jesse (ohio)

do u think the panthers should bench jake

Pat Yasinskas
  (2:30 PM)

No, they don't have any options that are better.

Nat (Maryland)

Based on how all the teams and their players have looked this season, what position do you think each the Saints, Bucs, Falcons and Panthers will target with their first round picks next year?

Pat Yasinskas
  (2:30 PM)

Let's wait until February or March for this one.

Lloyd (Baton Rouge, LA)

Not to be a bitchy Saints fan either, but you'd rather a staff that has a couple of former head coaches that failed? Sounds a bit weird to me, but OK.

Pat Yasinskas
  (2:33 PM)

I wouldn't call Mularkey a failure. He wanted out of Buffalo because it wasn't a good situation. He'll be a head coach again. Emmitt Thomas and Robiskie have been interim head coaches and know the territory. Brian Van Gorder will be a head coach before long. This might be the best staff in the league.

Mike Green (Charlotte nc)

Pat the panthers have a better options then Jake at Qb and that is Matt Moore

Pat Yasinskas
  (2:34 PM)

Seriously, what have you seen from Matt Moore that would lead you to believe that???

Kevin (North Carolina)

What record do yo think it will take for John "I refuse to make adjustments" Fox to get fired? Thanks.

Pat Yasinskas
  (2:34 PM)

8-8 or anything less.

Ben (Charlotte)

Not saying Matt Moore is the answer, but what does he have to do to get a chance. Just wondering why would he even be on the team if when one guy goes down, they bring in someone else to take the QB #2 spot. What is his purpose on the Panthers?

Pat Yasinskas
  (2:35 PM)

He's a No. 3 QB, nothing more and nothing less.

BB (NY)

Pat, Got tickets to the Panthers Vs Bucs game in Tampa, should i be hopeful that my Panthers can winthe game?

Pat Yasinskas
  (2:35 PM)

Think they've got a shot.

Jack (Houston)

Sounds like there are a lot of (not) bitchy Saints fans out there. I'm a Saints fan. I respect your decision. I think, in time, Payton will prove himself to be one of the best Head Coaches in the League. For now, however, you're probably correct in your assessment.

Pat Yasinskas
  (2:37 PM)

That's all I'm saying. He's a great offensive mind. He can prove himself on the rest of it over time, but I don't think he's done that just yet.

Wally (Los Angeles)

Pat can I get a biased NFC South opinion? Saints 3-0 start with 3 blowouts and never trailing for a single second more/less impressive then the other 3-0 starts?

Pat Yasinskas
  (2:37 PM)

Throw in the fact that two of those were on the road and it gets even better.

Big Catt (Durham, NC)

Is there anyone on the Panther's current coaching staff that is head coach material?

Pat Yasinskas
  (2:38 PM)

Nope, wouldn't say that. Thought Trgovac and Mike McCoy could have developed into that at some point if things had gone differently.

DM (NYC)

So many Saints and Pats ??s, a Bucs ?? please...What the heck is going on with the DB coaching? Supposedly a point of strength with Morris--is the new DB coach AWOL? Is Bates just overrated?

Pat Yasinskas
  (2:39 PM)

Or maybe the DBs just aren't any good?

Carlun (Virginia)

Pat do you think the Falcons finally end the back to back winning seasons thing this year?

Pat Yasinskas
  (2:39 PM)

Yes, I do.

Marques (Reno, NV)

Pat, I have an interesting question. Every week you get thousands of questions during the chat. Do you laugh when people try to be creative by being someone their not just to get a question answered? Example: Drew (New Orleans), Marion (Dallas), Tom (New England). I know you laugh at that right?

Pat Yasinskas
  (2:40 PM)

If I had time to laugh I would. But you guys bomb me with questions so fast that I don't even get to read half of them. Your effort is appreciated

Lonny T (Chascaque)

Do yo think Raheem Morris will pull out of the hole he's in? I know young coaches have been all the rage - Gruden, Tomlin, etc. - but I'm not sure Raheem has the same tools those guys have.

Pat Yasinskas
  (2:42 PM)

Not saying he definitely will, but give him some time. This is clearly a rebuilding situation. The Bucs wanted him to tear it down and build from scratch. It's going to take some time for that to happen. Guys like Gruden and Tomlin got to go into good teams with lots of parts already in place.

ben (tampa )

What DBs are bad, pat? we havent even seen tanard yet.

Pat Yasinskas
  (2:43 PM)

Piscitelli? Ronde? Even saw Talib beat a few times. And you would have seen Tanard before if he had kept himself out of trouble.

BUCK (AZ)

Pat, why dont you think jerry would hire a proven winner in a shannahan, cowher, or schottenheimer?

Pat Yasinskas
  (2:44 PM)

Cuz he once hired George Seifert.

John (Rock Hill, SC)

In the last 2 games the Panthers refuse to run the ball in the 25 range they were doing last year isn't that just making Jake's job more difficult than it has to be since his strength is the play action? I call Judas on the offensive play caller!!!!! Thanks PAt

Pat Yasinskas
  (2:45 PM)

John, I'm with you totally. If the Panthers were doing what they used to do and Jake was having problems, then I'd say get rid of him. But they're suddenly asking him to win games by himself. He's never been capbable of that. Whatever happened to Double Trouble or Smash and Dash and that great offensive line?

jesse (ohio)

do u think that gruden was a good coach or like u said went into a good situation cause it seemed like tampa went downhill after winning the superbowle

Pat Yasinskas
  (2:46 PM)

Think Gruden's a good coach, but not necessarily a builder. There's a difference.

Adam ((Erie,Pa))

Has Jamaal Anderson pretty much sealed his fate with the falcons? Or does he still have a chance?

Pat Yasinskas
  (2:47 PM)

Looking like the end is pretty near.

Steve Smith (Charlotte)

Am I ready to leave Carolina for another team?

Pat Yasinskas
  (2:47 PM)

Stick around and see who your new coach and QB are going to be.

Nat (Maryland)

Just thinking areas of need, not expecting a solid prediction, anything this early is just a shot in the dark.I'm thinking Saints go OLB, Panthers QB, Bucs WR or DT, Falcons DB. Thoughts?

Pat Yasinskas
  (2:48 PM)

All of those make lots of sense. But keep in mind, Panthers don't have first-round pick.

J Rozz (tampa)

Pat dont forget that we arnt getting any pressure on the QB's and can you tell that Ronde Barber might have over 20 sacks as a corner but that doesnt make him a pass rush specialist.

Pat Yasinskas
  (2:48 PM)

Very good point on the pass rush.

John (Rock Hill, SC))

Pat are you saying that the panthers would Cut steve Smith why would the ever do that? smitty is our team leader he is a fan Favorite

Pat Yasinskas
  (2:49 PM)

Where did I say they should cut Steve Smith??? He's best player they've got. With the possible exception of Brees, he's best player in NFC South.

zack (nc)

Could the Panthers trade Peppers before the deadline

Pat Yasinskas
  (2:50 PM)

No.

Lloyd (Baton Rouge, LA)

Come on Pat, George Seifert inherited a winner and blew it. Schannahan, Cowher, and Schottenheimer built competative teams from the ground up. If Jerry doesn't realize that, then I think he doesn't know what he is doing.

Pat Yasinskas
  (2:51 PM)

I think Jerry goes with a coordinator that's a rising star.

Antoine (Metairie, LA)

You got dinner plans yet? If you can, get out to Brennans. They have a new shrimp and fried green tomato po-boy. Make ya slap ya Momma!

Pat Yasinskas
  (2:51 PM)

I might check that out.

J Rozz (tampa)

Any chance the Bucs bring Brooks back next season as a coach?

Pat Yasinskas
  (2:53 PM)

Doubt it. Assistant coaches don't make a lot of money and work brutal hours. Brooks can make money doing his media stuff and still have lots of free time.

Scott (Flowery Branch)

If I were GM for the Pnathers this offseason, I take what I can get for Pep, trade one of the RBs to get into the first round, look hard at a QB early, and get some hig-motor guys on the defense again. Sound reasonable?

Pat Yasinskas
  (2:53 PM)

Yep, I'm with you. And who's your coach?

paul (new orleans)

Have you been to new orleans post-hurricane katrina. Your impressions of the city?

Pat Yasinskas
  (2:55 PM)

Yes, been there multiple times and looking forward to going again tomorrow. Always have loved New Orleans and always will. The downtown area (or the Quarter) is pretty much the same as it always was. Can see the rest of the area building back up more each time I go there.

ben (tampa )

are you going to be london this year pat?

Pat Yasinskas
  (2:56 PM)

No, right now it looks like our Patriots guy is getting that trip.

Reid (Nashville)

Are there any veteran defensive tackles that the Panthers could sign to at least attempt to plug the massive hole at DT?

Pat Yasinskas
  (2:57 PM)

I actually like the Hollis Thomas move. Too bad they didn't get someone like him sooner.

Josh G. (New Orleans)

Pat, If you don't put on 5lbs this weekend, you just wasted a trip to new orleans. Glad you can see this game up close. I look forward to your comments. Let us know if you eat anything really good.

Pat Yasinskas
  (2:57 PM)

Cool, I've got the room. I've dropped about 10 pounds with this flu and need to put some back.

Rob (Australia)

I know that John Fox might be done after this season, but Fox is a great coach and I personally (besides their lack of running the football) don't blame him for the Panthers woes. What can he do, he has 20 of his 22 starters (19 if not counting Chris Harris), the Panthers just haven't been executing. Even you said that Fox was a good coach only about a month ago, he couldn't have become bad overnight.

Pat Yasinskas
  (2:58 PM)

Think Fox is a very good Xs and Os coach. Just think his window in Carolina might have passed. Couple more questions.

Jason (Kansas)

I can't understand what happened with to Panthers because NOTHING CHANGED. Mind-boggling.

Pat Yasinskas
  (2:59 PM)

Maybe that's the problem -- NOTHING changed. Seriously.

Caleb (Gulfport, MS)

Can we crown the Saints the NFC South Champs yet or is it too early?

Pat Yasinskas
  (2:59 PM)

Hang loose a bit. You're in good shape, but Falcons are still in it.

MIKE (TAMPA)

WHY WONT YOU ANSWER ANY OF MY QUESTIONS PAT DO YOU HATE THE TAMPA AREA

Pat Yasinskas
  (3:00 PM)

I live in Tampa, so I kind of like the area. Questions come at me 100 mph. I don't see them all and it's impossible to answer them all. But I appreciate your efforts.

NATIVE OF (DALTON, PENNSYLVANIA)

my right click button doesnt work now, bc of hittting paste so many times....thank you for ignoring me, my mouse appreciates it

Pat Yasinskas
  (3:03 PM)

I love Dalton. Tell everyone hello.

THOMAS (WILSON,NC)

JERRY GOT RID OF HIS KIDS, WHAT MAKES HIM SO LOYAL TO FOX?

Pat Yasinskas
  (3:04 PM)

Hang loose. I think it's only a matter of time.

MIKE (TAMPA)

pat time is up see you next week

Pat Yasinskas
  (3:05 PM)

Thanks Mike. Thanks to all who stopped by. See you next week.
