Chat with Bruce Feldman

  (2:01 PM)

Thanks for dropping by. Just finished breakfast and am ready to take your questions and talk some college football.

Jordan (Iowa City)

So are the Iowa Hawkeyes in your list of top 60 teams yet? How about them making a bowl game? Still pretty slim? I would like to know your thoughts.

  (2:01 PM)

No doubt. Check out the latest bowl projections on

Bly (SC)

What is your take on the Arkansas/Texas AM shoot out Saturday night?

  (2:06 PM)

Really curious. Can't wait to see whether A&M's pass rush is in fact back. Speedy Von Miller has been dominant thus far leading the country in sacks.

Andy (Birmingham)

Who has the edge this weekend, Monte Kiffin or Gus Malzahn?

  (2:10 PM)

Great question. Amazing to think you have this NFL guru presence against a guy who just 5 years ago was a high school coach. Can't wait to see what happens with this. I give the edge to Kiffin but if UT can't get decent QB play, Auburn still has a good shot to win.

Mike (DC)

Is Jerrod Johnson the best story nobody knows about?

  (2:11 PM)

He's a talent. Huge guy who can move and has some decent weapons. I wonder how close A&M is to being a top 25 team. They have a lot of pieces. Just not sure if they can be consistent enough.

jim (san francisco)

bruce big fan of your column... how good is ryan matthews out of fresno state really? I know he was hurt last year but the bulldogs are 1-3

  (2:13 PM)

Thanks. He's been terrific. Anyone who watched how he ran all over Boise could see that. Best thing is I heard he really matured in the offseason and is dedicated. Cut out the junk food and has prepared like a pro. He has a good shot to win the NCAA rushing title. As I said on First Take the other day both he and Toby Gerhart are great backs nobody hears much about because in part they play in an area not far from Jahvid Best and because they're on teams that have been off the radar for a while.

Mike W (Chicago)

Who do you have in the battle of Michigan? Univ of Mich are said to be underdogs going into East Lansing but the records tell a different story.

  (2:14 PM)

I have Michigan but I almost picked the Spartans. I feel like the Wolverines might be losing a little steam as expectations mount.

Luke (Omaha)

Who's your favorite for the Big 12 North?

  (2:14 PM)

It has been KU but I feel like it's time to jump on the Husker bandwagon.

Dax (Jackson Hole)

Bruce, why no love for the Longhorns?? They seem to be getting better and better each week. Are they a work in progress?

  (2:15 PM)

Everyone's a work in progress. The reason why I don't have them or UF #1 has as much to do with how Alabama has played and who they have beaten as anything else.I still have UT playing in the BCS title game btw.

John (Rochester)

I know it's early, but who are your Heisman leaders? Jimmy Clausen is putting up huge numbers. What type of season does Notre Dame need to have for him to have a chance?

  (2:18 PM)

For now I have a mix of the old and new with McCoy, Tebow, Keenum and Pike along with AJ Green as the wildcard in there since UGA would maybe be 2-2 at best without him. Clausen is in the mix too. He's gritted it out nicely and putting up good numbers. He needs to beat someone good though. I think if ND beats USC he has a shot, but he's gonna need help, just like Keenum, Pike, etc to overtake McCoy and Tebow, who would need some shaky games and at least one loss, maybe two.

Anthony (Ashville OH)

Im a big Buckeye fan but i want to know whats up with Michigan? Are they better this year or are they just playing nobodies?

  (2:19 PM)

They are waaaaaaay better this year. They have some explosive guys on offense. A more accurate triggerman in Forcier and the O-line is much improved. The big thing is they're all playing faster and with more confidence.

Sarah (Toledo, OH)

Bruce...what happens if Michigan goes undefeated? Truthfully!

  (2:21 PM)

It depends on whether there is an undefeated SEC, and or Big 12 team. If there are both of those, Michigan will get left out. I think Michigan coming out of the Big Ten would trump ultimately Boise, TCU and Houston in the pollsters minds. It wouldn't hurt them though if ND won out and went 11-1 too.

Chris (Seattle )

Do you think Jake Locker could be the real deal?

  (2:23 PM)

Definitely. He's super athletic. Has a strong arm with a quick release and is very tough and smart. Scouts love his intangibles and character which is big for a QB. He doesn't have many weapons around him, but he's a special talent.

cary (south carolina)

Bruce with Georgia being a 3 point favorite, do you think the odds makers are giving them a little too much credit?

  (2:23 PM)

Nah, the oddsmakers know what they're doing with this stuff.

randi (bluffton in)

do you think notre should be ranked in the top 25

  (2:24 PM)

Not now. They haven't beaten a good team yet. You can't make the argument on what they've done with two close wins over mediocre teams and a loss to Michigan.

Ernie (Winnamucca)

Bruce, do you believe in Boise state?

  (2:25 PM)

I do. They're really well coached on both sides of the ball and they have a smart team.

Tom (West Loop)

Bruce, do the polls make any sense to you? Ole Miss has beaten nobody so far but is still ranked after losing to an unranked team on the road, while a team like Nebraska (that only lost to Va Tech in a close game) isn't. Also, how can Iowa be ranked behind Penn State?

  (2:25 PM)

They don't. Cal ahead of Oregon? PSU ahead of Iowa? No thanks.

Austin (Provo, UT)

Bruce, what chances do an 11-1 BYU team (with wins over top-ten teams OU and TCU) have of getting an at-large BCS bid?

  (2:27 PM)

They need some help. ND would need to lose 2 more times and either Houston or Boise probably needs to lose also. And if there are two one-loss Big Ten teams that'd be another problem.

Chris (Houston)

In a few short weeks, could the RRR be a defensive battle?

  (2:28 PM)

My hunch is no, but in most cases when everyone talks offense, you get a tight defensive game and the Sooners are the country's #1 D and Muschamp's guys just completely shut down Mike Price's UTEP team.

Ryan Williams (Blacksburg, VA)

Bruce, big fan here! Is anyone talking about me for the Heisman? I have 80 more rushing yards, 61 more receiving yards, and the same number of TD's as Jahvid Best... And i have done it against better competition. I am just wondering because if so i might have to get a suit before the season is over! Thanks and go HOKIES!

  (2:30 PM)

Gotta keep winning. I don't think many people know your name because the Hokies just introduced a bigtime back to us last year (Darren Evans). I don't think Heisman is realistic this year.

Drew (Tuscaloosa, AL)

Bruce, what impact will Hightower's loss have for Bama's nasty D?

  (2:31 PM)

He's a great young player because they can do so much with him. Fortunately for them they have McClain and a great D-line and some good young players to fill in, but it's a big blow.

Blake (Abilene, TX)

Bruce how about the old SWC. Texas, TCU, Houston, Texas A&M, SMU, Baylor, Texas Tech, Arkansas. 17-6 combined record not bad

  (2:32 PM)

Interesting. Wonder what the Big 8 is at?

phil (nj)

do you think colorado has a chance to upset west virginia 2 years in a row?

  (2:33 PM)

A chance? Sure... but I think WVU will win pretty big tonight. Am excited to see how wild that crowd will be fore this game. It would be a huge win for Coach Hawk obviously but I see WVU running all over the place tonight.

frank (south bend)

ND vs UW who wins?

  (2:34 PM)

I'll go with ND, although I'm interested to see what Steve Sarkisian has for ND since he's prepped for them for a few years from his USC days.

Kurt Colman (Columbus)

Bruce, did I get a bum rap getting a 1 game suspension?

  (2:35 PM)

Yeah, I think so.

Mike (DC)

Any chance the ACC gets 2 BCS bids for the first time ever?

  (2:35 PM)

It's possible but Miami needs to beat Oklahoma probably to start the chain of events for that to happen.

Nick (Albuquerque)

How good can Stanford be, and more immediately, can they be good enough v. UCLA on Saturday?

  (2:37 PM)

I think they're a pretty good team. They're very physical and have a tough back in Gerhart. I want to see if UCLA, which has a top 10 run defense, can slow him down. They couldn't last year. Keep an eye on UCLA DT Brian Price. He's one of the best players in the country.

Tim (NY)

Big 8 : 22-8 (0.733)SWC: 17-6 (.733)

  (2:38 PM)

Wow. Thanks.

Bradford (Boise, ID)

Bruce, How lucky are we to have Kellen Moore? I have to think there are a few "BCS" programs that wish they had recruited him.

  (2:39 PM)

Agreed. He doesn't fit the size that most teams want in a QB especially since when you have a guy that size they're usually fast guys. Crazy to think that Boise only had to beat E. Washington for him.

Bigglesby (AX)

You used the word "intangibles" above. Typically, this is used by people who aren't clever enough to frame their opinions in tangible concepts. Do you use any advanced statistics or computer forecasts in your analysis, or are you more of a heart, effort, and intangibles kind of guy?

  (2:43 PM)

I once thought that too about the word intangibles, but then I realized that the reason why so many blue-chip guys flop is bc of the intangibles. They're either not tough enough, not sharp enough or don't love football enough to excel. Things like busted assignments or a guy turning down a hit or other such "loafs" are things that get teams beat. Those I think fall under the category of "intangibles."Leadership also can't be measured in a 40-yard dash time or on a bench press, but it's something QBs must have to get guys to follow them.

Joe (College Park)

You really just finished breakfast? It is already after 2 o'clock assuming you are on the east coast

  (2:44 PM)

I'm not. I'm on the west coast and I had the blog and another story to file, plus Donnan's radio interview to get done before I could sit down to eat.

J.B. (Dunmore, PA)

Who do the Raiders select with the number one pick next year?

  (2:45 PM)

Eric Berry, Suh or Gerald McCoy.

Greg (New York)

Tell Tim that the win pct for 17-6 is actually .739

Jason (Sacramento)

Please tell me what is so impressive about Michigan? They have beaten two directional schools, Indiana, and a Notre Dame team at home that hasn't looked good yet. Which one of these schools wouldn't they have beaten last year?

  (2:47 PM)

They were 3-9 last year. They probably would've lost to both of them. And keep in mind, ND is supposed to be much better this year too. That's a good win especially for a team starting a true freshman QB.

Jake (Honolulu, HI)

If you were Coach Wulff at Wazzu, what would you tell Tuel to prep for his first start in Autzen?

  (2:48 PM)

I liked how Tuel held up in the Coliseum the other night. He's a reason to be optimistic if I'm a WAsh St fan. I'd also remind him that Kellen Moore won there last year as a freshman.

Ben (Lincoln, NE)

If Roy Helu Jr. keeps doing what he has been so far this year, does he start to get noticed nationally?

  (2:49 PM)

Yes, but his team needs to beat a top 20 team to help get more people noticing the Huskers.

Mike (Akron)

Can the browns draft Meyer, Tressel, Carrol, or Mack in the first round? They really need a coach. All kidding aside, do you see the Buckeyes pitching another shut-out?

  (2:51 PM)

No, but I see them rolling. IU hit a bunch of big plays against Michigan. I know OSU has a better D than the Wolverines but it's hard to sustain the shutout and be pretty much perfect again for 60 min.

Derek (Athens)

Games in October!!! You in Forde both left off the Worlds Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party.....Whats up with that?

  (2:53 PM)

I can't speak for my pal the esteemed Mr. Forde but for me there are so many great games this month and the hype there will be on UF-LSU, I felt that is the big one at this point. Then again if UGA rolls Sat, maybe I should rethink that top 10.

Kelli (Denver)

I'm a Roll Tide Girl that just married a Syracuse Orange Boy....any advice for this marriage?

  (2:53 PM)

Enjoy lacrosse season?

Derek (Tampa )

Why is it that every time USF beats a ranked nonconference there is always talk of how bad the team was instead of how good USF was. They caused all the turnovers and held up FSU at the line all day and BJ granted a bit lucky threw and ran all over them. So what gives?

  (2:55 PM)

I think that happens any time someone upsets FSU THEY become the story. If it were say Va. Tech or LSU, I think itd be different to some degree.

Blake (Abilene, TX)

Best, Food at the top 10 matchups for October? The state Fair in Dallas?

  (2:56 PM)

I love the food in Texas so any place down there is fine by me although I'm not one for deep fried anything and that's what that fair food is.

Michael (Long Beach, CA)

The question is: how long are the games against FSU considered upsets?

  (2:58 PM)

They become upsets I think because FSU is still dangerous (look at what they did at BYU to the team that beat Oklahoma).. Such a bizarre team.

Samer (Austin, TX)

What's the key in the Miami-OU game this weekend?

  (2:59 PM)

For Miami, it's not getting overwhelmed by the great OU D-line and keeping them off balance with their formations, shifts and playcalling. For OU, it's not giving up a lot of big plays.

Lou (Rockville, MD)

Does anyone go through the Big Ten undefeated?

  (2:59 PM)

My hunch is no.

Josh (Knoxville, TN)

Not even Chicken Fried Steak?

  (3:00 PM)

No, the wife likes that but I really try to steer clear of the fried stuff.

Tom (Bloomington, IN)

Bruce, big IU fan here, do you see the Hoosiers making a bowl this year?

  (3:01 PM)

No, I think the schedule gets a lot tougher from here on out, but I think they'll get close and go 5-7 or so.

Al (VA)

Bruce, what is USC's record this year end, 10-2, 9-3 or 10-4? Are the Trojans repeating as Pac10 champ?

  (3:01 PM)

I'll say 10-2.

Connor (Gainesville)

Who has Bama played besides VaTech? Is it possible you are giving too much credit to Bama that win?

  (3:04 PM)

Arkansas's decent and they dominated them. Plus, Va. Tech is a really tough team. It's not like there are a lot of other teams that are unbeaten with more impressive wins than that, especially ones that weren't home games.

Dave (Florida)

Why so little national press for Missouri's QB Blaine Gabbert 11 TD's no interceptions over 300 yd avg

  (3:05 PM)

The Tigers were way off the radar to start the season and they havent beaten a good team yet, but people should be paying attention. He's an outstanding talent. Great speed. Great size and a strong arm in a good system that is now working downfield more under new OC Dave Yost.

Tom (West Loop)

Ask Connor who Florida has played. A Tennesee team that lost to UCLA at home? A Kentucky team that stinks? The Citadel? At least Bama has one impressive win.

jamie (atlanta, GA)

what are UF's chances in Death Valley next week if Tebow can't go?

  (3:07 PM)

Still pretty good. Their D is superb and they can make plays on special teams. I think the big difference is without the power running game that Tebow brings, that takes a lot away from their speed guys.

  (3:08 PM)

three more questions...

T. Tebow (Gainseville)

Should I play next week even if LSU loses to GA?

  (3:09 PM)

If the doctors say it's OK, yes. They're the experts on this.

Connor (Gainesville)

Tell Tom that Florida does not play the Citadel this year.

Mitch (Gainesville, FL)

Why do fans care SOO much about rankings this early in the season? They're almost irrelevant if you're not in the national title chase.

  (3:10 PM)

That's just it. Who is to say who is or isn't in the national title chase if you're unbeaten now, especially after seeing Utah go undefeated last year and hammer Alabama?

Chad (Las Vegas)

Tell Connor it is sad that he has to qualify by saying 'this year'.

Tom (West Loop)

Sorry, Charleston Southern and Troy aren't impressive either. It just seems like Florida plays The Citadel every year.

justin a (greer sc)

do you see notre dame a BCS contender if they win the rest of their games

  (3:13 PM)

For a BCS bowl? Yes. For the title game, they'd need so much stuff to happen: Probably a TWO-loss SEC title team; a two-loss Big 12 title team, TCU, Houston and Boise all to lose, Va. Tech to lose and probably a one-loss Big Ten champ only it can't be Michigan. Oh and there can't be an undefeated big east champ. Or you at least only have one of those out there.

Chad (Las Vegas)

Did you really just post such a softball/ridiculous question as justin a (greer sc)? Of course if ND finishes 11-1 they will go to a BCS game. It's all about ratings and money and like or hate ND they bring both.

  (3:14 PM)

I thought it was more BCS title game not just BCS bowl game related.

Kellen (Boston)

  (3:16 PM)

Curious to hear if this would affect how the folks in Vegas see this game.

  (3:17 PM)

Thanks for all of the questions. If you have others, send them to me via Twitter at bfeldmanESPN. Enjoy the CU-WVU game tonight.
