Hi, everyone. Podcasts ran a little late, but I'm here, so let's go.
How is Florida still number one? Shouldn't people be voting on this year's performances and not last year's? People seem to be voting on their potential and not the performance.
You start out voting based solely on potential, and then you start weeding out potential and move to performance. At least that's how it should go in polls other than the coaches. If the coaches ranked presidents, they'd have Fillmore ahead of Lincoln.
Will Urban's ego put Tebow's health in jeopardy by playing him? Even if Tebow wants to play, Urban should not allow him because of his health.....Your thoughts on this? Thanks
I feel confident that Meyer will do what the doctors tell him to do. Coaches don't mess around with that anymore.
Ivan, how about Greg McElroy for the Heisman if Bama keeps winning? He has been flawless to this point.
The drumbeat has been steady for McElroy. I guess not for nothing is he wearing the sainted No. 12. It belonged to Namath and Stabler. McElroy has played very smart. Not real flashy but he refuses to beat Alabama. For an inexperienced quarterback, that's astonishing.
What is up with all the players getting hurt this year?
Mike, I've been asking that same question. It may be that it's a lot of high-profile players are getting hurt, so we notice more. I haven't found anyone who believes the spread offense is contributing to the injuries. Nothing else has changed. Beano suggested on the podcast today that teams go back to leather helmets and leather shoulder pads. That, ladies and gents, is why I love Beano.
With the tough part of the schedule over if the Hokies finish out going 12-1, do they have a legitimate argument for the BCS title game?
If Va Tech goes 12-1, I think they'll be in the championship game. The more Alabama wins, the more it would help Va Tech. I don't even think anyone would mind a rematch. With 12 games between them, it's not really a rematch anymore.
Go Warriors! Do we have this one tonight, Ivan?
I think it's La Tech's game. That can be a tough place to play. I plan on watching it, although I may be absent from 9-930 to see Modern Family. That is a funny show.
It's on ESPN2, by the way. Gotta plug the network.
Ivan, whos the most underrated team in PAC10? I got Stanford...
The winner of the UCLA-Stanford game on Saturday is the front-runner in the league and the most underrated team in the league all in one. I think that's a really interesting game.
Can you give me a quick breakdown of the LSU at UGA game?
LSU has underwhelmed on offense. Georgia's record is greater than its part. I can't remember a team being minus-nine in turnovers after four games and having a 3-1 record. Edge to Ga for the home game. After that, the key to me is when the Dawgs have the ball. The LSU defense has had some breakdowns, and so has the Georgia offense. One of these teams needs to mature by Saturday.
Now that the Big 12 North teams have finished with the cupcakes and begin league play, who will come out on top?
I think Nebraska. I thought Nebraska before the season. The Huskers have played well in September. I don't understand why they are ranked so low.
Hi Ivan. Big fan! Was just wondering if you could help me. I tore my acl and got surgery in the mid. of August. I was wondering if their was any way I could be back for our Thanksgiving day game for football? Has any big name player ever gotten back from an Acl surgery in 3 1/2 months other than Jerry Rice?
Erik, I'm guessing that at the time of your injuries, Jerry Rice was in better shape than you were. Just a hunch. Maybe you could play qb for both teams. But I haven't seen you throw.
What bowl game do you see Boise St. going to? NC, Rose, Fiesta?
If Boise State runs the table, I expect that they will be in the Fiesta.
Michigan at Michigan State - who wins and why?
Be wary of Sparty. Michigan has two one-play victories. Michigan State has two one-play losses, wants to prove something, and is at home. Nothing like the Wolverines to cure that. Plus, Forcier's shoulder will be aching.
Is Hawaii to Louisiana Tech the farthest distance between two FOOTBALL teams in the SAME CONFERENCE? I think someone said that Ohio State and Alaska-Fairbanks is the farthest distance between two schools in the SAME athletic conference in any sport (ice hockey).
Until Fla International leaps to the Pac-10, I'd have to think it's the widest gap.
Do you see the top-5/to-25 attrition continuing this week and beyond?
I do. The high-profile injuries and the volatility of offenses these days makes me think we're going to need more time to separate the good from the wannabe.
Would an undefeated BSU/Houston/TCU jump over a 2 loss BCS team for the championship game?
Hope so. I think it would happen, given their rankings at this point.
What team should be in the top 25 that isn't?
You want me to say Wisconsin, don't you? I'd probably take Auburn before the Badgers.
If Tim Tebow gets healthy and wills his team to a victory against LSU. Does that seal up the heisman? (considering the GATORS run the table)
I cqan hear the dramatic music swelling up over the highlights already.
Which freshman RB has impressed you the most so far this year?
That's a good question. Dion Lewis of Pitt, Trent Richardson of Alabama, Onterio McCalebb of Auburn. Take your pick.
What fried foods should I sample of at the Texas state fair in two weeks? And if the game were played with a healthy Bradford, who's the favorite?
man, do I miss the State Fair. The great thing about it is you can get fried anything: peppers, twinkies, oreos. Don't forget to visit the free angioplasty booth near the south exit.
3rd and goal with 30 odd seconds left in the game, the opposing team controls the ball but has no time outs and the clock is running AND they need a touchdown. Why on earth would any coach call a timeout?! I'm still at a loss.
The more I thought about it, the more I didn't like Danny Hope's decision. We can all name games where something has happened on the final play. Plus, you're sending a bad message to a defense that has played well. What's harder, to make one stop or go 80 yards in 25 seconds? I think the latter.
Washington at Florida International still wouldn't be a longer trip that Hawaii to Louisiana Tech.
Matthew, step away from the Garmin.
We have seen the type of injury that Bradford has before. Whether he comes back against Miami or Texas, do you think he is going to have the velocity on his passes required to beat solid secondaries?
Good question. I assume if he comes back this week, he won't be airing it out. The problem is, Miami defensive coordinator John Lovett will assume that, too. I would think Bradford's experience with a weakened arm would trump Landry Jones.
How many Jewish people from Alabama do you think graduated from Leland R. Stanford Jr. University?
Off the top of my head, I can name one.
Hi Ivan. Does Washington have a decent shot at Notre Dame this week?
The thing with young teams is, you don't know how they will respond. They got embarrassed last week. Can they put it aside? Same question with Miami. The Ntore Dame defense has struggled, and Locker is a playmaker.
What's your take on the disrespect Ohio State has been getting in the polls. They've dropped every week except this past week and their only loss came to a USC team who they dominated for 58 minutes.
I am surprised, but the egg that USC laid at Washington probably hurt the Buckeyes as much as it hurt the Trojans.
If you were an AD and could pick one current college coach to start a football program at your school who would it be?
From scratch? You'd want a good recruiter. You'd want a salesman. You'd want someone who's really organized. Sounds like Mack Brown. Good luck getting him.
How many more years do you think Joe Paterno and Bobby Bowden are going to coach?
I'm guessing Bowden coaches in 2010. That's not a guess. That's what he said to Mike Tirico on the radio last Friday. And Paterno I would say goes to the end of his current contract, which I think is 2011. Health permitting in each case, of course.
What are your thoughts on the Yankee Bowl?
Very cool. I know it's not the same Yankee Stadium that Leahy and Blaik coached in 60 years ago for those great ND-Army games. But it's Yankee Stadium, and it's college football in NYC. That's great.
Make that two.
How much is the loss of Hightower going to affect Alabama's NC title bid?
As good as Hightower is, and that's first-round good, I think McClain is more important to Alabama's defense for his leadership.
Starting a school from scratch...Not Brian Kelly? this guy has is doing a lot more with a lot less
Kelly would be a great choice, and he's younger than Brown. Probably hungrier, too.
What do you think is the best rivalry in college football? How do the old Penn State vs. Pitt game stack up to todays rivalries?
Scott, another good question. That was a great rivalry, as was Penn St-Syracuse. But it was no better than Ohio State-Michigan, Alabama-Auburn, Ga-Fla, Texas-OU, etc., etc.
Is Beano okay? I saw he's missed a couple chats...
Beano returned to the ESPNU College Football Podcast today. He's off the DL.
Doesnt Bowdens contract run out at the end of this year? If he stays on past his contract, Jimbo gets $5 mill and walks...
I thought that was Jan. or Feb. of 2011 when Fisher would get the buyout.
Starting a school from scratch.......... Kirk Ferentz? For the lack of blue chip recruits that Iowa gets, he sure has the ability to find the diamond in the rough and look at how he keeps a coaching staff together, they don't jump ship.
I don't think Ferentz is enough of a backslapper or salesman. The thing with starting a program is you have to attract attention, sell tickets, etc.
I have no idea of your age. So, don't take this wrong. Were you at Stanford when Garin Veris was there in the early 1980's? We're from the same hometown, Chillicothe (OH), and I was in a wedding with him.
It pains me to say I am older. Good player, though.
Coach Peterson is a great coach, one of the better ones withing the past 5 years, turning a good team in the middle of no where, in a bad conference into a powerhouse, do you think he is on the market to go to another school or stays where he is?
It will be interesting to see what happens. Boise State doesn't have the money to expand the stadium. In fact, when I was there for the Oregon game the talk was of cutbacks at the university. If Petersen feels like he can't get any bigger or keep up with the Joneses, then he may walk. But I know he loves it there. That's where it gets interesting.
Does the BCS Champion come from the SEC again this year? When was the last time a conference dominated like this?
I had a stat on that. I don't think any league has even won four consecutive national championships. The SEC won three in a row from 78-80 (Bama, Bama Ga.) and the Big Ten won three straight right around the beginning WW II.
Why is Miami on the front page? VT blew them out, Nebraska man handled VT. Why isn't NU on the front page? So typical....
Rob, pay attention. Miami plays a top-ten team this week. Nebraska doesn't play. You're right, that is typical, in journalism, anyway.
Thoughts on Leach and Twitter. Is this over-control or exactly what a coach should be doing?
I think it's overreacting. But Leach is consistent in his control of his players. He protects them from that vast media horde in Lubbock.
Just dawn on me that when I brought up freshman RBs, I forgot Ryan Williams of Va Tech. But he's a redshirt...
If attracting attention, selling tickets, etc is the criteria for starting a football program, then surely Doug Marrone has to be in the mix. Look what he's done with Syracuse - which one could argue needed someone to start a program from scratch.
Good point. Joe Paterno was very complimentary of the turnaround in attitude and physicality of the Orange from last year to this.
That's it, guys. Thanks. Talk to you next week.
