Chat with Terry Blount

Terry Blount
  (2:00 PM)

Hello chatters. What's on your mind this week?

Darrell (GA)

Terry, what's up man? What is going on with Roush??? I had high hopes for all of their cars this year and I am very disappointed. Shed some light on the situation if you will. How do you see them running next year? I say all 4 teams are in the chase in 2010.

Terry Blount
  (2:01 PM)

Ragan would have to make a dramatic climb upward to make the 2010 Chase, but I wouldn't be surprised to see the other three guys make it. They'll have the new Ford engine and hopefully be a little faster on the track.

Kevin (Boston, MA)

Terry,Much the same way that the go or go-homers qualify, has anyone spoke of having the Chasers qualify together? It seems like at certain tracks going first could be a huge disadvantage while another chaser could go 34th after the track has rubbered in a bit.

Terry Blount
  (2:02 PM)

Good point, but at most tracks, it doesn't make much difference where you start. The one advantage is pit selection. But it's not a bad idea to have the Chasers qualify together.

Steve (Richmond VA)

Terry- Your old pal Steve S. from Houston here. With only 4 drivers within 100 points, are the other 8 drivers already just about out of championship contention?

Terry Blount
  (2:04 PM)

Hi Steve. Good to hear from you. No, the other guys still can get in it. But it will probably take a win or two to make a real run at it.

Nick Rolando (Orlando)

Sorry, Terry one more question but will RPM have a tight-knit relationship with Roush Fenway?

Terry Blount
  (2:05 PM)

Yes, if they complete the merger with Yates. All the engines come from a combined effort.

Turner (GA)

Randy Lajoie wrote yesterday that 60,000 of Dovers 200,000 seats were empty Sunday. Do you agree with that number?

Terry Blount
  (2:05 PM)

That's pretty close.

Matt (Syracuse)

Hey Terry, guess Scott Speed will be the Rookie of the year since there's no way anyone who got"rolled" as many times as Joey did could still be a...er... rookie

Terry Blount
  (2:07 PM)

Yes, Joey got a bit of baptism by bashing there and it shook him up a little, but he'll be fine.

Mark (CA)

Do you think the empty seats at Dover are a vote of of "no-interest" in Jimmy Johnson and Herdrick dominance?

Terry Blount
  (2:08 PM)

No. I think it's a case of people not having the money to go to races.

Matt (Ogdensburg, New Jersey)

hey terry do you think jr can get a win this year it seems like talladega and martinsville are his last shot your thoughts

Terry Blount
  (2:09 PM)

As this point, I'd say know. They are just way off and don't seem anywhere closing to winning. It's so bad it shocks me. They had a few top 10s, but it ain't working.

Juan Carlos (Miami)

If Mark Martin considers Jimmy Johnson "supeman" like he kept saying Sunday hasn't he already psyched himself out of winning the championship?

Terry Blount
  (2:10 PM)

No. Mark is a very polite and considerate man. It's just his nature. But he's giving it all he's got on the track.

Richard (California)

Terry, I get the impression that many inside the garages think a lot of Gilliland's talent. Do you think he will have a successful career in cup racing, or does it depend on the economy and sponsorship?

Terry Blount
  (2:12 PM)

As aways, it depends on sponsorship and a quality ride. David has ability. Whether that will ever translate into a career as a top-10 contender is a big jump.

Mike (Atlanta)

Jr needs to start getting out the rabbit's feet, lucky socks, maybe even his own Jobu. he had easily a top-15 car by the end of the race yesterday, but couldn't get his lap back. He's had terrible luck since Daytona in July

Terry Blount
  (2:12 PM)

Junior has a lot more problems right now than just luck.

Linda (Phoenix)

Does Dale Jr race at 100% effort or is he just kinda going through the motions? How can be get beaten so bad by all the other Henrick cars every race?

Terry Blount
  (2:14 PM)

He's no going through the motions. He's trying, but it's like that team is stepping in quick sand. They are in a horrendous slump. I've never seen anything quite like it for a good driver on a top team.

Marcus (Va Beach,VA)

Terry, I understand that drivers like a different feel in there race car...But Whats stopping Jr from Being able to put in a Setup from either Mark, Jimmie or Jeff after they struggle all weekend in practice like they did at Dover?

Terry Blount
  (2:15 PM)

They already tried that several times. Everyone at Hendrick has access to what the other teams are doing.

Denise (PA)

Do you think Joe Gibbs will assign Dave Rogers or Jason Radcliff to be Kyle's new crew chief on the #18 M

Terry Blount
  (2:15 PM)

No. I think Steve will return next year.

Alan (Albany, NY)

Jeff Gordon looks like a beaten man. To share a shop with the 48 and not get the results seems to be sucking the life out of him. Are JJ and Chad that much better a duo, or maybe is it actually that Gordon has too much too live for post racing on his mind (model wife, new baby, wine business) and the just can't/won't live on the edge anymore.

Terry Blount
  (2:18 PM)

Most drivers reach a point were they don't have the same fire they had when they were younger. I really think Gordon is as good a driver today as he was when he was winning titles, but I think the series has much more talent that it did 10 years ago. And Gordon isn't as good in this car as he was in the old one. But he's still capable of getting hot and winning the title.

Frank (SC)

And do you think Dale jr might have made a huge mistake by leaving DEI-effectively killing that team-and going to Henrick? Did Dale assume a Henrick car would turn him into an instant winner?

Terry Blount
  (2:19 PM)

He thought it would give him a chance to win a championship. Staying at DEI wasn't an option because his relationship with Teresa was terrible.

Larry (Michigan)

We were disappointed in Brad for what he did to Denny at Dover in the Nationwide race. Do you think Brad is making more enemies in Nascar than friends?

Terry Blount
  (2:21 PM)

No. Things happen in a race and guys get mad. Brad just wants to hold his ground and not let a Cup star push him around. It's just boys being boys.

Matt (Syracuse)

Terry, I am a new nascar fan, I know the cars cup/nns are different, but I see that only few of the nns races are won by non-cuppers. Are there any tracks where a nns car could outrun a cup car?

Terry Blount
  (2:22 PM)

Sure. It happens every now and then. The real problem that needs solving is Cup drivers running full time in the NW series. It has made that series glorified Cup practice.

RAY GORDON REID ( TOPEKA KANSAS 66612)

QUESTION TO TERRY BLOUNT AT 2.40 HI TERRY WHO DOYOU HAVE FOR KANSAS CITY SUNDAY

Terry Blount
  (2:23 PM)

Ray, you realy need to come up with a new question. But I'll take Tony Stewart.

Zach (Waterbury, CT)

I think Martin or Montoya winning the title would be the worst thing for the sport right now. We need all the fans we can get and this would seemingly prove all these conspiracy theorists right, and them and a lot of other dumb people would lose interest in a corrupt sport.

Terry Blount
  (2:25 PM)

I couldn't disagree more. Martin winning the title would be big news nationally even outside of racing. JPM would also. If people are dumb enough to think it's a conspiracy, I feel sorry for them.

GaFan (Atlanta)

Do you think Lance will be back as Jr's crew chief next year? If not, who??

Terry Blount
  (2:26 PM)

He probably will, but I'd take a long hard look at it. I still say Malec is the best guy who doesn't have a CC job right now.

Ryan (Powhatan, Va.)

Terry, do you know much about the Bailey's 300 at Martinsville? I'm going this weeknd but don't even know anyone racing...

Terry Blount
  (2:26 PM)

Not really on my radar screen. I'll be in KC.

Cathy (IL. )

Re-setting points at the start of the chase is a form of handicap. Do you think Nascar should handicap the championship winning team from the previous year to create more competiton?

Terry Blount
  (2:28 PM)

I think the Chase is the right thing to do. Maybe the regular season champ should get a few more points, or maybe just a big cash bonus.

David (Washington DC)

My apologies Terry I posed the same question to David as well last week and got the chats confused...my bad. That being said JPM is a contendor...I'll get one of you guys to admit it. Hopefully it will be before Homestead.

Terry Blount
  (2:29 PM)

He's definitely a contender at this point. He's proving they can run in the top 5, something they weren't really trying to do early in the year.

Jessica (Tenn)

Has a driver ever been his own crew chief? Since Dale Jr can't find a cc he likes do you think he could act as driver and cc?

Terry Blount
  (2:30 PM)

Do you want him to get out and change the tires, too?

dan (san antonio tx)

is paul menard leaving yates to go to rcr next year.

Terry Blount
  (2:30 PM)

Maybe. When you have big sponsoship money, which he does (obviously) a lot of people want to talk to you.

jose (san jose)

Terry, with the down economy will there be more teams cutting back and if so will the fans stay away with the diminished field?

Terry Blount
  (2:32 PM)

I don't think fans care if the starting field was 36 cars instead of 43. All they want is quality racing. And frankly, those last seven or eight cars are just making laps anyway.

TG (PA)

Everyone mentions Ron Malec being good for Junior. So will somebody please go talk to Rick Hendrick already and mention this.

Terry Blount
  (2:33 PM)

I'm sure that already has come up.

Alan (Albany, NY)

If a ride opens up at Hendrick would anyone other then owner/driver (Stewart) leave their current team if given the chance? For example, could Hendrick easily get Carl Edwards, Kevin Harvick or Denny Hamlin if he had the opening?

Terry Blount
  (2:34 PM)

Not easily, but any driver would listen if Hendrick came calling.

dan (san antonio tx)

when will ford use the new motor.

Terry Blount
  (2:34 PM)

I hear at Charlotte, but I doubt Edwards or Biffle will use it. Too much of a risk until you see how it performs.

Scott (Vegas)

Kurt seemed fairly pleased with a top 5 at Dover. Do Kurt and Roger have the Tryson matter under control?

Terry Blount
  (2:35 PM)

They seem to, but I'm not convinced this will stay rosy until the end of the year. Just a very odd situation.

Zach (Waterbury, CT)

Both weeks so far, Smoke has had a chance to do a LOT worse. We've seen his car be great a few times this year, if he can heat up just a little how would you say his chances are this year?

Terry Blount
  (2:36 PM)

Still good he if can pull off a win or two, which he can.

Scott (Kansas City)

Terry, what are your thoughts on teh Kansas Speeway as afar as a race fan's experience, and do the drivers enjoy the track and facility? Hope you make time for some kC b-b-q!

Terry Blount
  (2:38 PM)

I'll probably make time for the Hereford House one night. The KC facility is outstanding. One of the best on the circuit. Most drivers like the track.

dan (san antonio tx)

do you think paul menard can ever be a top ten driver.

Terry Blount
  (2:38 PM)

In a word: No.

Mike (Atlanta)

Speaking of Malec, what does a car chief actually do, i.e. what's the difference between a crew chief and car chief?

Terry Blount
  (2:39 PM)

The car chief actually is in charge of all the parts and pieces that go on the car. The crew chief is in charge of all the people and oversees the entire team.

TG (Maryland)

Some of the media think JJ can win 10 cups in a row is this posible?

Terry Blount
  (2:39 PM)

I haven't heard anyone say that. No, that's not possible.

KG (WI)

heres a tough one, JJ or Mark Martin for the title?

Terry Blount
  (2:41 PM)

Honestly I don't care as long as they get to he end with the title still on the line. I'd love to get to Miami and know that one position on the track could decidenthe championship. And I don't think it's downn to just those two guys.

Richard (California)

Terry, My earlier question was posted but no answer came through, so so in a nutshell, thoughts on Gilliland.

Terry Blount
  (2:42 PM)

He has some skills, but as always, success depends on sponsoship and having a quality ride. Whether he ever can become a top 10 driver is qute a leap.

Ronnie (NC)

Since Johnson is 99.99999999% assured of winning the 09 Spint cup what is the point of even running the rest of the races?

Terry Blount
  (2:43 PM)

Because what you said isn't true.

Steve (Hartford)

Who do you think it's down to other than JJ and Martin?

Terry Blount
  (2:44 PM)

JPM, Gordon, Stewart and Busch all still could win it if they get hot. Really anyone could. A lot can change, especially with Dega still to come.

robert (ny)

terry-can you tell nascar, that they should hold a lottery for the chase races so there is a different group of chase races every year. keep the teams guessing.

Terry Blount
  (2:45 PM)

That would be fun, but it's not logistically possible. It takes careful planning to set the schedule with factors like weather and conflicting events.

Mark (Mount Airy,MD)

Good Afternoon Terry, Which driver/crew chief combo would you rate the highest: Gordon/Evernham or Johnson/Knaus???????

Terry Blount
  (2:46 PM)

All time, I would put Petty-Inman at the top.

Jorge (Ft Lauderdale)

Kyle has lousy tires a Dover and Denny was extremely critical of the Goodyears there. Doesn't that prove that the Dover Goodyear test by Johnson and the #48 gave them a huge un-fair advantage?

Terry Blount
  (2:48 PM)

No. Johnson's been good at Dover for a long time. He has five wins there. This whining over the tire test is sour grapes. JJ won at Indy when almost every other driver tested there except him.

Woody (Denver)

Refresh, people...refresh. THAT said...have you heard any grumblings that Kahne may want to defect when his contract is up after RPM jumped to Ford?

Terry Blount
  (2:49 PM)

Kasey was thinking about going elsewhere in 2011 long before that happened.

Richard (GA)

Last week Martin said he can't read the gauges in the car and Waltrip said the same thing last night. What the hell is going on? Can't any of the older drivers read the gauges?

Terry Blount
  (2:50 PM)

Clearly Richard, you are under 40. Reading close up becomes an issue after that.

Bill (Concord, NC)

Terry, Have you heard anything about Dale Jarrett venturing into ownership at any level? Or is he happy enough with his booth job now?.

Terry Blount
  (2:51 PM)

We're paying DJ so much money he can't afford to be an owner. Just kidding. I think Dale would be a great team owner.

Mike (Atlanta)

Hypothetically, JJ wins the title this year, giving him 4 in a row, tied with Gordon. Its almost universal that the top 3 is Earnhardt, Petty, Gordon. Looking at the numbers JJ should move ahead of Gordon, arguably Petty (different eras i know). Does the debate then become Earnhardt vs. JJ?

Terry Blount
  (2:52 PM)

That's a big hypothetical. Let's give it a few years.

robert (ny)

besides the economy, what do you think the main reasons for declining ratings and attendance. thanks

Terry Blount
  (2:54 PM)

It doesn't help that Dale Jr. is terrible this year. But I think the exconomy is the biggest factor. I also think many races are too long and most shoud start earlier in the day.

Rob F (Hoboken, NJ)

Does Paul Menard's father dump more sponsorhip into his son's ride making him more attractive to teams? I don't really understand how this guy continues to float from team to team

Terry Blount
  (2:55 PM)

It's all about the money Rob. If you can pay, you can play.

Mike (CT)

Who has a better chance of winning a chase race - Jeff Gordon or Denny Hamlin?

Terry Blount
  (2:56 PM)

I'd say Gordon because he has Hendrick equipment.

Warner (LA)

Dale jr ain't gonna be around forever so what happens when he quits?

Terry Blount
  (2:57 PM)

A new hero always comes along. It's the nature of sports.

Rob F (Hoboken, NJ)

But he's not doing anything in cup. Does his sponsor dollars spill into other programs? I just don't get it!

Terry Blount
  (2:58 PM)

It a sponsor is happy to pay $15 million a year to watch your car run 25th every week, an owner will galdly take your money. It's that simple.

josh (slc)

when a car gets in an accident like the 20 car do teams salvage anything to the next car at the shop? or do they just take it out back for target practice?

Terry Blount
  (2:59 PM)

Usually there are some parts that are salvagable, but not much.

sam (ky)

terry whats this gillett thing on jayski?

Terry Blount
  (3:01 PM)

George Gillett is selling his interest in the Liverpool soccer team to a Saudi prince. As part of that deal, RPM may start some driving schools in Saudo Arabia. But Foster Gillett said today they are not selling RPM.

Terry Blount
  (3:02 PM)

Gotta run folks. Off to do NASCAR Now. Check it out at 5 pm ET. Have a great week. I'm out. Peace.
