Chat with Dan Rafael

Dan Rafael
  (11:57 AM)

Greetings Fight Freaks to our weekly chat. Big notebook should be posted shortly, so check it out. There are also blogs this week and several news stories, including about Hopkins' next fight. I'm headed for New York tomorrow to cover the Top Rank Lopez/Gamboa Latin Fury PPV and next week starts the Super Six, so we have plenty to discuss. Let's get to it.

Geron (B-More,MD)

Dan, so i'm at the local barbershop and we're discussing a potential PAc-Man-FMM fight. My contention is that Floyd is just the bigger man, he'll sit back and counterpunch Manny everytime he comes in with his pressure fighting style. I think Shane Mosely is the only fighter right now out there who could beat FMM because of the even size and almost just as fast. your thoughts?

Dan Rafael
  (11:59 AM)

I think it's a reasonable thought on the situation. If Floyd fights Mosley or the Cotto-Pac winner I will be happy, whichever guy he fights. Competitively, I think Mosley is the tougher fight for Mayweather. Financially, the Pacquiao fight is much bigger.

Big Mike (Chicago)

Dan, I was thinking the same thing about JJM vs Hatton. I'd love to see that fight. I think both can still put on entertaining fights given the right matchup.

Dan Rafael
  (12:01 PM)

I agree. Yes, they are both coming off lopsided losses, but they lost to the best guys in the business. I think it would be a fun fight and it would generate fan interest and a lot of money.

Jeff (Redondo Beach, CA)

Do you expect Vazquez to make quick work of Priolo?

Dan Rafael
  (12:02 PM)

After 19 months off and injuries and the brutal fights with Marquez, I have absolutely no idea what Vazquez has left. That said, the guy he is fighting has lost like 6 in a row at smaller weights. Remember -- the fight is live on Fox Sports En Espanol on Saturday night at 10 ET.

Tom (Kingston Ontario)

Hey Dan why doesn't Freddie Roach give Manny an ultimatium regarding this advisor of his Mike K. Tell him either he has control over fight/trainning related matters or tell them both to go "PUCK DEMSELVES" (as Manny would say)

Dan Rafael
  (12:02 PM)

Freddie is the trainer, not the manager. He works for Manny. Further, he cashes a seven-figure check every time Manny fights.

Ryan (Saratoga Springs, NY )

Danno!! eating lunch at my desk today so I dont miss out on the chat! Legitimately, does RJJ have a shot against B Hop or is it just wishful thinking? Toga misses you!!

Dan Rafael
  (12:03 PM)

Saratoga rules. What a great city and so many good memories of my days living and working there. I'd like to see what happens Dec. 2 before I get serious about thinking about Jones-Hopkins 2. But, of course, Roy can win that fight. He's still faster than Bernard and Bernard is not a big puncher. And Roy knows he already beat the guy once.

Emilio (Sacramento)

Hey Dan, just heard an interview with F Vargas saying he intends to come back at 175...he is sluring pretty bad in the interview. Hope he doesn't get licensed

Dan Rafael
  (12:04 PM)

It would be sad to see Vargas fight again, especially after seeing him and having talked to him not that long ago. He was a mess.

Jeff (Redondo Beach, CA)

Quick a nice PPV card this weekend. I haven't seen any promotion for it at all though.

Dan Rafael
  (12:05 PM)

Nice show. I like Lopez and Gamboa and even though they are not in deep water, I want to see them fight. It's gotten promotion. I see the commercials on TV where I live and I see the advertisements every day when I go on the Daily News Web site, etc... There have also been several articles about it. I wrote about it as the lede to the notebook today.

john (phoenix)

Any news on Ike Quartey?

Dan Rafael
  (12:06 PM)

I asked Lou DiBella about him just the other day actually. Ike is still dealing with the sad and untimely death of his wife and hasn't been talking boxing.

David (Cape Canaveral, FL.)

DTM, It's gettin' late in the year, any word on if, and who Povetkin will fight before the year is out? Thanks

Dan Rafael
  (12:07 PM)

Matter of fact, Povetkin returns next Friday on a club show in Baltimore, which was just announced. He faces Damon Reed, a guy he should destroy early. It will be Povetkin's first fight with Teddy Atlas as his trainer. I am thinking about taking the drive up to Baltimore for the fight next week.

Carlos (Lexington, KY)

Senor Rafael:I have known many boxing freaks in my life, but pound for pound you are at the top of the list. If "Juanma" beats his opponent this weekend, do you really see a real chance of seeing him fighting Caballero. I'm dying to see that fight! Also, I love the fact that Quintana is scheduled to fight Clottey (about time to fight caliber fighters again!). I think he has a good chance to outbox Clottey. Your thoughs as of today? íMuchas gracias!

Dan Rafael
  (12:08 PM)

If Lopez wins, Lopez-Caballero is definitely a good possibility. Arum told me the other day he'd like to make it. I know Caballero and his people want it. And I know it's a fight HBO would approve in a heartbeat as Lopez's next fight is supposed to headline BAD on Jan. 23 from Puerto Rico with Gamboa also on the card. As for Clottey-Quintana, I think it's a very solid matchup and I'm glad HBO bought it. It's a great compliment to a terrific main event of Pavlik-Williams.

Greg P (Staten Island,NY)

Dan, read the article about BHOP's next fight, was sorry to see M Hakkar's name appear due to him being maybe the worst #1 contender ever...for a good laugh take a look at his last 3 fights this year and total up his opp's combined record!

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 PM)

I was at the Hopkins-Hakkar fight and it was one of the most disgusting performances I have ever seen. Hakkar deserved a shot less than anyone I think maybe ever and he literally sprinted around the ring for the first couple of rounds. It was a total disgrace.

Luis (Utuado, Puerto Rico)

lopez vs gamboa your opinion who got the edge

Dan Rafael
  (12:10 PM)

Great fight. I favor Lopez at this point because he's a more disciplined fighter but who knows? Just love the matchup.

Paul (NYC)

Any news on possible Victor Ortiz opponents for Dec 12?

Dan Rafael
  (12:11 PM)

Nothing specific at the moment. HBO and Golden Boy are going back and forth. I am told it will NOT be Vivian Harris, despite some rumors. Considering Vivian left the ring in a stretcher last time and hasn't done anything of note in ages, he shouldn't be on HBO anyway.

Joe (NYC)

How is the Theater at MSG for live fights? Do you think it'll be a good show tomorrow night or are these fights too one-sided?

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 PM)

The Theater is a great place for fights. No bad seats, fairly small. There are favorites in the fights, but they should at least provide some action I think. I think it will be a fun show, which is why I am going.

Dave (NJ)

DTM!! I'm getting sick of everyone automatically talking about Floyd-Pac, not giving Cotto a chance. For one, I think Cotto destroys Pac (way too big) but also, I think with Cotto's fanbase, Floyd-Cotto could be just as big. Your thoughts?

Dan Rafael
  (12:14 PM)

I agree that it is insane to count out Cotto. Frankly, I think I may lean to him at this point. But the point is how do you dismiss Cotto, a proven warrior, a good puncher, a bigger guy, an experienced guy and a guy who has faced great opponents and always come through except against a guy who I believe cheated against him.

BK Don (Brooklyn)

Thinking about hitting up the show at Wamu this weekend. What is Arum saying about the expected turnout? How does the card stack up in your opinion? Does Barrett have a chance?

Dan Rafael
  (12:15 PM)

I asked Arum about the turnout and he said he expected between 2,000 and 3,000 for the show. He knows he's up against it in NY with the overwhelming publicity going to the Yankees in the playoffs and the 4-0 Giants playing Sunday and Eli injured.

James (Athens)

SUPER 6 IS NEARLY HERE, SUPER 6 IS NEARLY HERE!!!

Dan Rafael
  (12:15 PM)

Amen, Freak. Gotta tell you all that you MUST watch Saturday night's Fight Camp 360 documentary show on Showtime that previews the tournament. I watched a screening of it and it is great, and I'm not just saying that becuase I am in it. It's really outstanding. It's on at 10:30 ET/PT.

Jeff (Redondo Beach, CA)

We have a heck of a November ahead of us. Will you be attending any of the other fights other than Cotto-Pac? Maybe flying out to Oakland?

Dan Rafael
  (12:16 PM)

I'll be at Dawson-Johnson 2, Cotto-Pacquiao and MAYBE Kessler-Ward.

Josh (Lincoln, NE)

Can't wait for the Super Six to start. Guys fighting the top guys in their native divisions instead of moving up and down and arguing about weight. Kessler has to be considered the favorite right now, doesn't he?

Dan Rafael
  (12:16 PM)

Yes, I would say Kessler is the favorite going in, but that could all change in the next couple of weeks.

Jonathan (Northern VA)

Dan, you seem kind of excited about Hopkins-Jones II. I thought you'd hate it.

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

I like the idea of these guys finally fighting after spending a decade covering the possibility of them maybe fighting again. It's just about freakin' time. They have no other big fight. They need to fight each other for history's sake and I am glad it's going to happen. One thing I honestly believe is that whatever happens, the fight will be a lot better than their first fight, which stunk out loud.

Gene (Ft. Lauderdale)

What's the deal with this 360 show? I haven't seen any publicity for it and according to my tv guide, it don't exist.

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

It was just announced this week, so the cable guides probably haven't been updated yet. But I assure you it is on Saturday night and there will be many replays.

Jason (Chicago)

I'll counter Dave from NJ's stance on Cotto-Pacquiao. I think Manny's speed is going to give Cotto a lot of problems. And while Cotto's win against Clottey was certainly a good win, I don't think Cotto looked nearly as sharp or as quick as he did against Mosley.

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

Fair enough.

Dan Rafael
  (12:19 PM)

By the way, Notebook is up.

Michael (Long Beach, CA)

I love Dirrell's quote..."Mr. Froch can kiss my Yankee Doodle..." Classic.

Anthony (Sacramento)

Dan is there any for sure picks on your Hall of Fame Ballot you could share with us?

Dan Rafael
  (12:21 PM)

I just got my ballot yesterday. On first glance I don't see any automatics like in recent years with Lennox Lewis or Pernell Whitaker. It's a light year for new candidates.

Keith H (Seattle)

To avoid dumb questions, it is recommended to take a few minutes to read the notebook and then return to the chat.

Dan Rafael
  (12:22 PM)

Thank you for your public service.

Dan Rafael
  (12:22 PM)

By the way, just for the record, I am listening to the awesome new KISS CD, Sonic Boom!

Greg P (Staten Island,NY )

Dan, everytime I read an article about the Super Six I wish it was starting tonight!! I still can't believe they got six fighters, managers etc to agree on one thing....This is the most im pressive thing boxing has put together since BHOP won the middle. tourney in 2001!

Dan Rafael
  (12:24 PM)

It's way more impressive than because with the middleweights, King controlled all four guys.

R! (Oakland)

Considering NFL Films lent their hand to the Fight Camp 360 series, definitely should be good. What are the chances that a Tournament fight lands on CBS next year?

Dan Rafael
  (12:24 PM)

The tourney is on Showtime but you never know if CBS will get involved in the marketing in some fashion. The 360 debut episode is terrific.

Joel (Eastchester, NY)

Dan, any new word on US TV coverage for Pascal-Diaconu 2?

Dan Rafael
  (12:25 PM)

Nothing at the moment. Wish I had better news for you.

Josh (Alexandria, VA)

Is the news about Alexander Povetkin taking a tune up and making his US debut on a club card in Baltimore next weekend true? What do you think of the move (and his pairing with Atlas in general)?

Dan Rafael
  (12:26 PM)

Yes, it's true. It's smart for Povetkin to fight. He has to fight at some point. And Damon Reed should get destroyed. Povetkin probably gets better sparring, but you can't simulate a real fight. As far as him and Teddy, I'm anxious to see them together.

John (San Fran)

Can we add Dirrell to the list of great smack talkers? That was a hilarious quote in the notebook

Dan Rafael
  (12:29 PM)

Dirrell is getting up there. Froch is also a good talker.

Matt G (Chicago, IL)

Danno, even though I would consider myself a Lieutenant Freak, I am not too familiar with Kevin Johnson. Can you briefly fill me in on him and his chances against Vitali. Thanks.

Dan Rafael
  (12:32 PM)

Kevin has a great jab and good size, but he is still a lot smaller and has very little power compared to Klitschko. He has also never faced anyone nearly as good as Klitschko. I think he has a very uphill climb in the fight.

Dan Rafael
  (12:32 PM)

We have breaking news from the Bat Phone.

Dan Rafael
  (12:33 PM)

Richard Schaefer and I just spoke. He said contracts are out on Mosley-Berto and Diaz-Malignaggi 2, meaning we could see both fights finalized next week.

Taylor (SLC, UT)

Interesting how V. Klitchko-Arreola brought the highest American audience for HBO this year. It just shows that although there are many things the sport can do to raise its profile, but nothing would propel the sport's immediate popularity more than a strong heavyweight division.

Dan Rafael
  (12:33 PM)

You are 1,000% right.

Tom (Kingston Ontario)

Is there anybody you have gotten to know through the business that is completly opposite to his reputation or media personna??

Dan Rafael
  (12:33 PM)

Yes.

Donald (TX)

Did the recent flooding in the Phillipines effect Pacman's training?

Dan Rafael
  (12:34 PM)

I asked Bob Arum that. He was recently in the Philippines during the bad weather and he said no. Manny's camp is in the mountains and was not impacted he said by the flooding and that he maintained his normal camp.

JB (Toronto)

I just saw in the notebook that NFL Films is producing the documentary series on the Super 6. Steve Sabol and his father Ed are geniuses. I am FREAKING out! This is going to be absolutely unbelievable - like 24/7 on steroids. Just wondering if you've had a sneak peek and if you're as excited as I am?

Dan Rafael
  (12:35 PM)

Yes, as I said earlier, I watched the first episode and it is well done.

Richie (Florham Park)

Did you get paid for your 360 TV appearence? If so, how much?

Dan Rafael
  (12:36 PM)

No, I didn't. Showtime asked me if I would do the interview and since I love the Super Six I was happy to do it for them. They sent a crew down to my house the week between Mayweather and Klitschko. They were at my house for a couple of hours on a Wednesday. The next morning I flew to LA for the Klitschko fight.

Bert (Minneapolis)

Any idea what Floyd's new outside the box business plan is? A reality show visiting his uncle in prison?

Dan Rafael
  (12:37 PM)

Maybe his outside the box business plan is not waste his money and to actually pay his taxes?

Rick (Marina)

Contracts out, so this means the fighters have agreed with evrything and just need to sign, right?

Dan Rafael
  (12:38 PM)

Well the other side will have comments and I'm sure there will be some language tweaks. But the promoters have agreed in principle to the deals. With respect to Mosley-Berto, the issue is not between the promoters. It's between Berto's side and HBO. They have some things they need to still work out. That fight is a bit more complicated because it's a much more expensive fight than Diaz-Malignaggi 2.

Kelby (Omaha)

Go Big Red Dan! Speaking of Heavyweights, I got a chance to watch the Tua fight... He actually looked pretty good, given the circumstances, I still think a Klitschko jab keeps him away all night...but what a left hook :)

Dan Rafael
  (12:39 PM)

Tua's left hook is still one of the greatest punches I have ever seen. But I agree -- he would never land it against either Klitschko. That said, he did look good destroying Cameron.

chrisdiggidy (oklahoma city, ok)

Dan, didn't see the listing for the 360 show on the super 6, do you know how long it's going to run? (sorry if you answered this, I just checked the notebook and didn't see the answer to the question)

Dan Rafael
  (12:39 PM)

The first episode runs a little over 20 minutes.

Brock (Belleville, IL)

Showtime's website has a 360 video out already. It is very interesting to see how these promoters have to negotiate.

Dan Rafael
  (12:40 PM)

There ya go. Don't have to wait for the premier then. Check it out. I particularly enjoyed the first three minutes.

Dan Rafael
  (12:40 PM)

Here's the link to the show: http://sports.sho.com/browse/video-portal.html?id=44166861001

Marc (Malden, MA)

At the Vitale fight, did you see the LA fans boo Hayden Panetierre? What is wrong with them? She's hot!

Dan Rafael
  (12:42 PM)

I did catch a glimpse. She's dated Wladimir Klitschko from what I am told and was there for that reason.

Greg P (Staten Island,NY)

Dan, have to give Vitali alot of credit being so active....A heavy. champ having 4 fights in the last 14 months if his Dec fight goes through...other heavys so take notice!

Dan Rafael
  (12:43 PM)

You're right. I think he's making up for missing four years.

Paul B (NY, NY)

Great to see the Love Child is back in business. Do you think he will ever try and get back to welter where he had more pop?

Dan Rafael
  (12:43 PM)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child. Back to work on Oct. 16. He's only 24. I think he can get another opportunity if he really gets serious about things.

Chris (Vancouver)

Once again, behind at work and should be working, but the highlight of my week every week is the friday chat. Freak or just depressing that this is the highlight of my week? GO COTTO!

Dan Rafael
  (12:44 PM)

Freak, but still depressing.

Jeff (New Orleans)

How much more valuable is learning to speak English for foreign fighters? Do promoters push it on their "cash cow" fighters?

Dan Rafael
  (12:45 PM)

It's very valuable if that fighter intends to fight in the US. It allows fighters to have a better relationship with the fans and the media. A fighter who speaks English is obviously easier to interview and to write about. Promoters do encourage some to learn English. I give fighters like Miguel Cotto, among others, a lot of credit for making it a priority.

Brock (Belleville, IL)

DTM, do you think the Jones-Green fight will be picked up by VS? In a related question, shouldnt fights with no US outlet accept almost any offer for it to be shown in the US? I mean something is better than nothing.

Dan Rafael
  (12:46 PM)

I can't say if Versus will pick up the fight for sure but I believe it will find a US TV home somewhere for sure.

Steve (NYC )

Is Tarver officially retired?

Dan Rafael
  (12:47 PM)

Not officially, although he is taking on more broadcasting responsibility at Showtime as I am told he will be part of the team for the Super Six, not just ShoBox.

Toby (Houston)

You ever vote someone for the the HOF one year, the leave them off your ballot the next?

Dan Rafael
  (12:50 PM)

No.

Bert (Minneapolis)

Is Kostya Tszyu on the HOF ballot yet? He hasn't fought in almost 5 years, is that the waiting period?

Dan Rafael
  (12:52 PM)

He's not on the ballot yet.

Jonathan (Northern VA)

Dan, can I start asking about Shane Molsey every week and you respond with, "Ahhhh, the Sugar Man", a la Michael Buffer.

Paul B (NY, NY)

I watched the Poonsawat Dunne fight on youtube and poonsawat looks legit. He reminded me of a mini bersion of Maidana the way he relentlessly stalked his prey. Am I getting ahead of myself thinking he can compete with the likes of Lopez or Caballero?

Dan Rafael
  (12:54 PM)

Compete? I think he can. I like his agression.

andrew (uk)

Please vote Nigel Benn into the HOF......many thanks

Dan Rafael
  (12:54 PM)

He's not on the ballot.

Bert (Minneapolis)

So, know that the card is official, and you wrote about it in your blog, have you told Arum how disappointed you and the Freaks are in the undercard?

Dan Rafael
  (12:55 PM)

I haven't talked to Bob about it but rest assured, when I see him this weekend I will remind him of his broken promise.

Rick (Marina)

That January card of a possible Celestino-Junama, with Gamboa on undercard sounds really gooood.

Dan Rafael
  (12:55 PM)

Agreed. A card of Lopez-Caballero and Gamboa-Concepcion is what Boxing After Dark is all about.

Shower Door (Las Vegas)

Please vote for me!

Dan Rafael
  (12:56 PM)

You're not on the ballot.

tj (san francisco)

hey dan, im watching the fight camp 360 show right now on showtimes website.

Dan Rafael
  (12:56 PM)

Wonderful.

Matt H (Phx,AZ)

Dan, Hayden P. is becoming the next Tara Reid (that's why she's booed), also what is your favorite KISS album?? Mine is KISS, alos Rock and Roll Over.

Dan Rafael
  (12:57 PM)

Alive I and II.

Steve (NYC)

US TV for Haye- Valuev?

Dan Rafael
  (12:57 PM)

It's possible it may be on PPV, but there is nothing set as of yet.

Chris (Los Angeles, CA )

Hi Dan...Is Eddie Chambers gonna take a stay busy fight before Wlad next year? I think such a long lay off is gonna mean a plumper version against Klitschko.

Dan Rafael
  (12:58 PM)

I talked to Eddie when I was in L.A. for Vitali's fight and it looks like he will not take a fight before facing Wladimir, which will probably be around March-May timeframe.

sam (phili)

Kevin Johnson doesn't have near enough power and doesn't move his hands enough to have a shot against Vitali, although his boxing skills are pretty good.

Greg P (Staten Island,NY )

Dan, what are the next set of matchups for the super six ?....are all the other fights already set up by contract or do they go fight by fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:01 PM)

There are three fights that have been formally announced, next week's two fights and Nov. 21 Kessler-Ward. The remaning bouts are set in the contract but not been announced by the network. However, I have written the matches several times over the past few months. Here they are: Abraham-Dirrell in January in the U.S.; Froch-Kessler in March in Europe; Ward-Taylor in spring 2010 in the U.S.; Ward-Dirrell in summer 2010 in the U.S.; Froch-Abraham in summer 2010 in Europe; and Kessler-Taylor in the U.S. in fall 2010.Then come the semifinals and finals. The semifinals would take place in January 2011 with the final to be held in the U.S. in May or June.

Josh (Lincoln, NE)

Seen Winky?

Dan Rafael
  (1:01 PM)

Who?

Sean (Richmond, VA)

So who do you lean to between Froch and Dirrell?

Dan Rafael
  (1:02 PM)

Dirrell.

Bert (Minneapolis)

What's next for Devon Alexander? I know King says he can't get HBO for any of his guys, but you'd think HBO would be interested in Alexander.

Dan Rafael
  (1:02 PM)

My understanding is that HBO wants to feature Alexander on BAD in the first quarter of next year.

Ron (Bethel, Ct)

Dan the man!! I'm sitting ringside for the first time ever at the Dawson Johnson fight on Nov 7th in Hartford!!!!!!!! I've heard that they were gonna put Chris Avalos on the fight card as well. Any truth to that? He is definitely a fan friendly fighter and makes this an even better card then it already is

Dan Rafael
  (1:03 PM)

I haven't seen the bout sheet yet for the card but I wouldn't be surprised if Avalos is on since he's one of promoter Gary Shaw's best prospects and very exciting. It makes sense for Gary to put him on and let the HBO folks and East Coast media get a look at him in person.

Steve (Hartford)

Will the Judah/Casamayor card be on ppv? and if so how much?

Dan Rafael
  (1:04 PM)

It's supposed to be on PPV. I am not sure of the price as it was not included in any of the material I received.

SPOOK (Da Graveyard)

DAN, whoo wood u like to see the scary TUAMAN in wit next?

Dan Rafael
  (1:04 PM)

Would love to see Arreola-Tuaman.

Ron (Bethel, Ct)

Dan Fact or Fiction? Junma's, Gamboa's, and Solis fights all last less then 5 rounds each

Dan Rafael
  (1:04 PM)

Fiction. I think Barrett lasts longer than that with Solis. I think all three guys could last deep into their fights.

Ryan (pvd)

You should get royalties from HBO and SHO for leading traffic to their websites.

Dan Rafael
  (1:05 PM)

Good point.

Anthony (Sacramento)

Hi Dan, thanks for all the good work you do keeping the freaks in the know! I was just wondering: I know you have two Panasonic vhs dvd dual recorders from Costco. I am going to purchase one and am wondering which model it is? Your help would be greatly appreciated!

Dan Rafael
  (1:05 PM)

Not sure of my model, but I am sure it is no longer being manufactured since it's probably at least 4 years old (and still going strong).

Dave (San Jose)

Don't get me wrong I love the idea and am pumped about the Super 6, but I don't think it's going to help Showtime get new subscribers at all. I can't afford showtime and since the tournament is like 3 years long I can't buy it just for the tournament, what do you think?

Dan Rafael
  (1:06 PM)

I don't even know where to start with that one. First off, the tourney is 18 months. Second, Showtime is in the business of attracting new subscribers but it is also in the business of satisfying the millions of subscribers it already has and the tournament is a great way to do that for those of us who subscribe primarily for boxing.

Pat (NY)

Where you as disappointed with Allan Green as I was. I swear if Tarvis Simms didn't take the fight on short notice Simms might have been able to pull that fight out. I thought Simms looked much better than Green.

Dan Rafael
  (1:07 PM)

Green looked terrible.

Jason (Chicago)

Is Povetkin fighting at Michael's in Glen Burnie?

Dan Rafael
  (1:07 PM)

No, in Baltimore.

Berndawg (CHI)

How about a full fledged KISS RAD chat after you see them??

Dan Rafael
  (1:08 PM)

Don't think ESPN would go for that, but I would do it. I can't wait. I'm seeing them Tuesday in DC.

Jorge (San Diego)

Dan is the 360 show 24/7 good?

Dan Rafael
  (1:08 PM)

Totally different. Both are great.

D (KC)

finally, news on the "Love Child", you've made my day, DTM.

Dan Rafael
  (1:08 PM)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child.

Alec (Nashville)

What wouled happen if one of the Super 6 could not make weight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:09 PM)

There is language in the master agreement to address that. I have read it but cannot remember the exact stipulations. However, there are remedies for that the same way there is language in the event of a failed drug test or a DQ or a no contest, etc... They really covered their bases in the contract.

Josh (Alexandria, VA)

Amazingly, I'm out of town for it. Are you going (I assume you're not flying overseas to cover Super Six fights)?

Dan Rafael
  (1:10 PM)

I will not be at next week's Super Six, but I sense a RAD in our future.

Emilio (Sacramento)

My god, I just watched the 360.....I can't ^%&%^'n wait for this thing to kick off!!

Keith (Philly)

DTM, do you know which fight opens the Showtime broadcast next week? Any way to DVR the fights and watch them in reverse order without seeing the results? Thanks

Dan Rafael
  (1:14 PM)

I believe Showtime will open with same dat taped coverage of Abraham-Taylor and then have live coverage of Froch-Dirrell.

Tim (Lincoln)

DTM, what do you make of Jermaine Taylor saying he's on weight early instead of melting off 20 pounds in the last 2 weeks? If it works for him, JT 12-round stamina = BEAST.

Dan Rafael
  (1:14 PM)

Obviously, he needed to change some things going into this fight and it looks like he has.

Eric (Irving, TX)

DTM, the Love Child in a 6 rounder? Isn't that just a little too much of a step back? And is 160 really a weight he would stay at or go back to 154?

Dan Rafael
  (1:15 PM)

Ahhhhhhhhh, the Love Child. A six-rounder for very little money just as a way to get back in action is nothing unusual. The fight is listed as middleweight because it's just over 154. I do not think he will be 160.

Khalil (Atlanta, GA)

Dan, any word on Top Rank pursuing the theater screenings for Pacq-Cotto like Golden Boy did for FMM-JMM?

Dan Rafael
  (1:15 PM)

It's not going to be in theaters as far as I know.

Tom (Kingston Ontario)

Hey Dan has the ref been announced for the Cotto Pacman fight

Dan Rafael
  (1:16 PM)

Not yet. They'll probably decide that at the next Nevada commission meeting something this month.

Jeremy (Rio Rancho, NM)

Floyd recently said he's not waiting on Cotto/Pacquiao winner, and is not looking a Shane, assuming anyone would ever believe that, who else would he fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:18 PM)

Floyd can say whatever he wants. End of the day, he makes the most money fighting those guys. No other fight even comes close to either Mosley or Cotto-Pacman winner. It's all bluster and negotiating.

Wil (SC)

Quote of the week: "Somebody had the audacity to put a fight between Hector Camacho Jr. and Yory Boy Campas on pay-per-view this month. They should give me $24.95 to watch that crap."

Dan Rafael
  (1:18 PM)

Thank you. Glad you're reading the blogs.

Steve (NYC)

Is Yory Boy the first fighter in recent times to fight a father and son?

Dan Rafael
  (1:19 PM)

That's an interesting question. Off the top of my head I would guess yes.

Joe (NM)

Dan, I saw Bob Foster at an autograph signing in one of our local malls. I put a HUGE smile on his face when I told him that his knockout of Dick Tiger was one of the greatest knockouts I have ever seen!

Dan Rafael
  (1:20 PM)

It was a great knockout. I have a DVD of that fight. Might have to make it a DVD pick of the week. I spent some time with Foster a few years ago in Las Vegas when he was brought in for the Jones-Ruiz promotion. What a nice guy. Great to talk boxing with. I really enjoyed that.

Mark (NYC)

I see Omar Henry's opponent is TBA. Does that stand for "To Be Annihilated"?

Dan Rafael
  (1:20 PM)

Very good!

Ross (Indianapolis)

Dan, I don't have Showtime but really want to watch the Super 6. I seem to recall you mentioning in a chat or blog once that you can order Showtime programming on a pay-per-view basis even if you don't have Showtime. Is this true? Soooo psyched for the tourney!

Dan Rafael
  (1:21 PM)

Not sure if they still do that but you can order Showtime and then cancel it and be charged a pro-rated price for however long you keep it.

andres (newyork)

dan if cintron still fighthing in PR on the 24th or has the card been canceled now that quintana is no longer a part of it

Dan Rafael
  (1:22 PM)

The card is still on with Cintron, just no Quintana on it.

Brandon (L.A.)

Off the top of you head, which ref would you trust most in a fight of the year match up? Any favorites?

Dan Rafael
  (1:23 PM)

There are a lot of good referees. Right now I think the best one out there is Kenny Bayless. That's not a knock on any of the other outstanding officials, but I have seen Kenny work a lot of big fights and he has been brilliant.

bill (pgh)

so does televising the B-Hop tune up mean Versus is not getting out of the boxing biz?

Dan Rafael
  (1:23 PM)

At this point, it's a one-shot deal. Don't read anything into it.

Sean (Richmond, VA)

In your opinion what is the greatest fight NEVER made?

Dan Rafael
  (1:24 PM)

There are a lot but what about something like SRL vs. Pryor?

Michael (Long Beach, CA)

Speaking of the top of your head....when does the grooming commence?

Dan Rafael
  (1:24 PM)

We're in negotiations.

Michael (New Jersey)

Hey DTM Great blog yesterday. Is there any way you or ESPN can put a picture of each boxer next to their name in the divisional rankings? (not just #1) A face to a name would help us freaks to get even more familiar with the fighters....

Dan Rafael
  (1:25 PM)

I'd love to see pictures in the rankings. I know we have shots with each No. 1 guy but I don't handle the production end of things and I'm not sure if we can do that or not.

Patrick (Mexico)

Is Yory Boy the first fighter in recent times to fight a father and son?No there was the white dude (Grover something, I think) who beat Chavez senior but got waxed by junior in 2006 or 07.

Dan Rafael
  (1:26 PM)

You're right -- Grover Wiley retired Chavez Sr. and then got destroyed by Junio.

Mitch (Oakland, CA)

Hi Dan. Recession has not been good on my family. Quite harsh actually. But here's my most recent spending rationale: I should upgrade to showtime because I'll get plenty more great fights from this tournament than I will when I last-minute impulse buy a single PPV. And they throw in some movies and shows to boot. Can you back me up on this?

Dan Rafael
  (1:28 PM)

That is great logic. Better to spend something like $10-$15 a month for Showtime with regular fights and usually at least two cards per month (including ShoBox) than get itchy to spend $40 on a PPV that doesn't thrill you.

Matt (NYC)

Dan - do you know if the Showtime 360 series will be on Showtime on Demand? Also, who are your picks for the first super six fights?

Dan Rafael
  (1:29 PM)

Yes, it will also be on Showtime On Demand.

Anthony M (Killeen, TX)

Where can I buy DVD's of older fights? Im a fairly new fan of boxing, and cant find a good place to watch classic must see fights.

Dan Rafael
  (1:30 PM)

Ebay is a good place to start but be careful. Best bet is to start recording your own stuff and build up a collection that you can eventually use to trade with others. That's what I did. I never spent almost anything building my collection. Just a lot of time and energy and trading.

Erik (New York City, Queens)

Is there any real concrete evidence that Shane Mosely will face Berto in Jan? Or is it all speculation?

Dan Rafael
  (1:30 PM)

They are exchanging contracts and the fight likely will happen.

Harry (Tucson, AZ)

is shawn porter giving Manny a hard time in sparring?

Dan Rafael
  (1:31 PM)

Porter has sparred with Manny and from what I am told, he's done quite well. Porter was a top amateur and an excellent prospect signed to Prize Fight.

Steve Smoeger (Las Vegas)

What about me???????

Dan Rafael
  (1:33 PM)

I love ya baby. You're one of the best. But you don't live in Vegas.

Noah (Plantation, FL)

How is Popo doing? I like cats. Meow.

Dan Rafael
  (1:34 PM)

He's sitting at my feet as I type this -- my cat, not the fighter of the same name.

Black (Cali)

that super six should have super eight damn they left out allen green and bika

Dan Rafael
  (1:36 PM)

Dude get the hell over it and stop complaining. I like the tourney how it is. I like the idea of a round robin instead of single elimination.

Tom (Philadelphia)

Do you think they are going to televise the yuriokis gamboa fight we think he the most exciting boxer right now depending on talent

Dan Rafael
  (1:36 PM)

Of course, he is being televised. His fight is the co-feature on Saturday's PPV card.

squibbs (alpharetta, ga)

I've got a friend that is going to be in vegas during the pacman cotto fight and is interested in buying a closed circuit ticket. who do you buy those from and how early do they usually start selling them before a fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:38 PM)

Closed circuit tix usually cost $50 and would mean watching on a giant screen in a ballroom at the casino or whatever venue in Vegas has the fight. Not sure when they start selling them but they'll go on sale eventually.

John (Carson CA )

Do you think a fourth Vazquez-Marquez fight will ever happen?

Dan Rafael
  (1:41 PM)

I think it's entirely possible. Have to see what happens this weekend with Vazquez's comeback.

David (Reno)

What's the deal with the Jones/Green fight being on a Wednesday (and now the Hopkins fight)?

Dan Rafael
  (1:44 PM)

In Australia, lots of fights are traditionally on Wednesdays. So since Jones-Green is on a Wednesday and Hopkins wanted to fight the same day in something of a doubleheader that is the reason.

Big Mike (Chicago)

Its about time Showtime gets with the program and has some sort of countdown or 24/7 type show.

Dan Rafael
  (1:44 PM)

I couldn't agree more.

Kent (St Catharines)

Speaking of referees. Is Richard Steele still in the business?

Dan Rafael
  (1:45 PM)

Richard is retired as a refeee but still involved in boxing. I saw him in LA a couple of weeks ago as one of his young fighters out of his gym fought on Golden Boy's Fight Night Club card.

John (Michigan)

Master Dan! Does constantly being asked about a megafight like Pac-Cotto feel like being in a band (say, KISS) and having to play your single over and over?

Dan Rafael
  (1:46 PM)

Sure, but the Freaks want to talk about that fight, which I understand, so we talk about that fight. It's one of the biggest fights in the sport right now and there is overwhelming interest from the readers.

Eric (North Hollywood)

Is that Santa Cruz that I see on the Vaquez card? Dude went from losing a controversial decision for a linear title and in your top 10 rankings to fighting a 6 rounder off TV.

Dan Rafael
  (1:46 PM)

Yes. He's making a comeback in a low-profile bout.

Gutterdandy (Brooklyn)

Which fight holds more appeal for you: Vitali-Valuev or Vitali-Haye?

Dan Rafael
  (1:48 PM)

Either would be fine. I think Vitali beats both of them. But if he can fight the winner of Valuev-Haye, that would be good for boxing and further unify the titles.

Dennis (NJ)

Have you figured out how to be in 2 places at the same time? JuanMa card and KISS.

Dan Rafael
  (1:50 PM)

Unfortunately, no. I think the best I can hope for is getting into Saturday's KISS soundcheck at the Garden, then covering the fights and waiting until Tuesday to see KISS in DC.

Boxing Newbie (HK)

I will try again, Dan. Joe Mesi, u think he might have a chance to be a force in heavy weight had he still been involved in boxing? (also, in the showtime video, I saw two pair of gloves behind you, red and white, are they signed by some famous boxers?)

Dan Rafael
  (1:51 PM)

I think the ship has sailed on Joe Mesi's ability to be a serious factor in the heavyweight division. Good dude, but some bad luck. It's too bad because he was a popular fighter with an appealing style who was a good guy out of the ring. Yes, the gloves are signed. One of them is a signed glove by the entire 2000 US Olympic team that I bought at a charity auction several years ago.

Dave (San Jose)

24 years old, boxing freak and avid Friday chatter for 6 years and my first time being reprimanded by Dan!!

Dan Rafael
  (1:52 PM)

It happens to the best of us Freak.

Timothy (Oakland, Ca)

Dano, my wife is pregnant and we are having a boy. Daniel Rafael Williams is a finalist for names. She has said no names of boxers and she likes Daniel Rafael w/o knowing the association. I hope she does not google you over the next three weeks. Freak Status?

Dan Rafael
  (1:52 PM)

I'd be honored but you need some help dude.

Greg (Chicago)

What are your thoughts on a possible Omar Henry-James Kirkland fight down the road?

Dan Rafael
  (1:54 PM)

I have zero thoughts. WAY premature. One dude is in prison. One dude is like 7-0.

Ross (Indianapolis)

Dan, good to hear Tarver is finding a career in broadcasting. His fights with RJJ are part of what got me into boxing. I've always wondered how different his career would have been if he would have skipped "Rocky Balboa" and not gotten his butt kicked by BHop.

Dan Rafael
  (1:56 PM)

It's a good question. After Tarver beat Jones he got a bit full of himself, bulked up for the movie and had a hard time coming back down.

jude (houston)

u suck Dan

Dan Rafael
  (1:56 PM)

So do you.

Cam Paterson (New Zealand)

David Tua just destroyed Shane Cameron in a fight in New Zealand, I was wondering does he have a chance of contending for the title again??

Dan Rafael
  (1:57 PM)

If Tua stays active and fights better guys and wins, I see no reason why in this bad heavyweight era he can't get another chance. He is one of the best known heavyweights and can knock guys dead. He is marketable as well.

Greg P (Staten Island, NY)

Dan, are you and Jude having a problem?

Dan Rafael
  (1:58 PM)

Apparently.

Chris (staten island, NY)

Dan, I'm intrigued by the RJJ-Hopkins fight and I'm hoping it will be an entertaining fight, but I disagree with you in that this fight really has no historical significance. Both fighters (RJJ especially) are well past their primes so where is the significance? Who is further over the hill??

Dan Rafael
  (1:58 PM)

It's significant because they are all-time greats with a history. That means something when they fight. I'm not saying it's the biggest fight ever, but I am glad it's happening (assuming they win on Dec. 2).

Banishment (Hades)

Hey Jude, You are so badddd...come on down

Greg (NJ)

I didn't see the Showtime 360 Fight Camp show. How did you think it compared to the typical HBO 24/7 series?

Dan Rafael
  (1:59 PM)

Go on Showtime's Web site and you can watch the debut episode right now and answer the question for yourself.

Ned (Middletown, CT)

D$, it's my birthday, as a present how about you tell us about your favorite gatti fight other than rodriguez or ward

Dan Rafael
  (2:00 PM)

Happy Birthday, Freak. I'd probably go with the first Ivan Robinson fight, even though Gatti lost (and I think that is very debatable). Great action fight.

JB (Toronto)

C'mon. We all know Jude is really Gale Van Hoy.

Dan Rafael
  (2:01 PM)

That made me laugh.

John Cameron Swazey (Timexland)

Dan-o whats the all-time record for time spent in a chat with the FREAKS? Oh and I can't believe I'm looking forward to watching Oprah.

Dan Rafael
  (2:01 PM)

I've done like 5 hours before. And you know what? I already have my DVR set for Monday's Oprah.

Ian (Pembroke Pines, FL)

Is Porter getting paid to spar with Manny? I've also heard that Porter has waxed Pacquiao in several sparring sessions.

Dan Rafael
  (2:02 PM)

Of course, sparring partners don't do it for free.

Mo Green (Las Vegas, NV)

Why is Hopkins fighting a tomato can? Couldn't they get a better quality opponent?

Dan Rafael
  (2:04 PM)

You are unbelievable. Dude hasn't fought for a year. He's going to be 45 and wants to shake off the rust before a major fight with Jones. So he's fighting Ornelas, a credible professional who won't be a joke but probably won't win. Welcome to boxing. You lack of understanding is surprising.

Dan Rafael
  (2:04 PM)

And, may I mention, the fight is being done a VERY small budget.

David (Houston)

I cant believe im asking this but what is on monday's oprah?

Dan Rafael
  (2:05 PM)

Somebody didn't read today's notebook.

Noah (Plantation, FL)

You can't ignore my questions regarding a Mike Tyson-John Ruiz fight forever!

Dan Rafael
  (2:05 PM)

Yes, I can and I will.

Mike (NJ)

Do you have a gut feeling where the RJJ/Hopkins fight will take place? Atlantic City possibly?

Dan Rafael
  (2:06 PM)

I think either AC or Las Vegas.

Simon (UK)

I realise the fight has just be announced...but who do you favour in Khan-Salita?

Dan Rafael
  (2:06 PM)

KHANNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN!

Keith H (Seattle)

I'm not sure which is more disturbing about Timothy in Oakland: He's naming his son after the boxing columnist at ESPN or that he's another generation into the gene pool.

Jonathan (Northern VA)

Maybe you should send your beard hair to Timothy and little Dan... Timothy is a freak alright...

Smooth (East Coast)

Tim from Oakland is beyond Freak status, he may have achieved Stalker status

bill (pgh)

btw I dig your chats, but I'm not naming my kid after you

Dan Rafael
  (2:08 PM)

Thank goodness, a sane Freak.

Robby C (Southern New Jersey)

Who's next for JMM if Hatton doesnt take the fight?

Dan Rafael
  (2:08 PM)

That hasn't been decided as JMM just fought. I do think there's a chance he could take the fight with Katsidis, who is his mandatory and would be a really good HBO fight.

matt jones (nc)

any word on who casamayor is going to face?

Dan Rafael
  (2:09 PM)

Not yet. Don't expect anyone good.

Lispy (Pin Hook)

2 hours man I love you.

Dan Rafael
  (2:09 PM)

I love you too.

joe (nyc)

Mo is ridiculous - Hopkins past 6 fights are Pavlik, Calzaghe, Wright, Tarver, Taylor and Taylor - probably the toughest competition anyone has fought over the past few yrs; and Mo is complaining that he's taking a tune-up. WOW

Dan Rafael
  (2:11 PM)

BHop hasn't had an "easy" fight in years. He's only fought like every top contender and challenger for the past 15 years or so. Some of his mandatories weren't very good but he fought everyone. If he wants a lesser fight for chump change to get sharp for Roy, so be it. I have NO problem with that.

Joe (PA)

Do you think there will be Jones/Hopkins 24/7?

Dan Rafael
  (2:11 PM)

Good question. Have no idea.

Frank Booth (Lumberton, NC)

Danna Lama Ding Dong-Do you give Johnson ANY realistic shot against Big Klitschko?

Dan Rafael
  (2:12 PM)

Not really.

John Mark (LA)

I'm assuming that you are not reciprocating and there is no shot for a Timothy Rafael in years to come??

Dan Rafael
  (2:13 PM)

That's a safe bet.

Rob (Halifax, Canada)

Move over Marc from Philly, Tim is the ultimate stalker

Robert the Genius (Philadelphia B!tch)

Is Berto's WBC belt on the line vs. Mosley? Even though I think the belts hardy mean sh!t anymore I still feel it would be good for boxing to shore up these titles.

Dan Rafael
  (2:15 PM)

The Berto camp is trying to work things out with the WBC to allow the unification over the mandatory. I think what will ultimately happen is that Berto can defend his title in the fight with Mosley and that the WBC will order Collazo-Aydin for the interim title. If the winner of Mosley-Berto doesn't fight the winner of Collazo-Aydin, the fighter will be stripped and the Collazo-Aydin winner will be the WBC titleholder.

Tom (Reading, United Kingdom)

Any word on how the Pinoy Power card is shaping up? Would be good to see Nonito Donaire out again before the end of the year.

Dan Rafael
  (2:16 PM)

That card will be Latin Fury and not Pinoy Power. Donaire probably isn't going to fight again this year according to his manager, Cameron Dunkin, who I spoke to about that recently.

Luca Bratz (Queens, NY)

Dan, just checked my interactive guide for Saturday 10:30 on Showtime....no Fight Camp 360, only Rambo.

Dan Rafael
  (2:16 PM)

Like I've said 10 times, IT'S ON. YOUR CABLE GUIDE JUST HASN'T BEEN UPDATED.

Timothy (Oakland)

Banishing myself for my own good. my feelings are now crushed...and by the way the other freaks may need some sensitivity training.

Dan Rafael
  (2:17 PM)

There, there. It's OK. The Freaks are ruthless.

Bubba (Ottawa,il)

King freak, I am going to vegas for Pacman-Cotto. Do you have to buy tix for the weigh-in?? Or is it first come first serve type of thing? Also for the diaz-paulie rematch is it leaning toward going to chicago? Or is it 50-50 right now with chicago and vegas. One last thing love the fact that barrett is stepping in to fight for fast fres.

Dan Rafael
  (2:18 PM)

The weigh in is free and first come first served until the place is full. Diaz-Paulie rematch I am told will be either Chicago (dumbest place on earth for that fight) or Las Vegas, also a place where they will draw nobody for the fight.

Nigel (Chestnut Hill, MA)

Dan -- nice to see you interviewed for the Super Six promo. Was that the Bat Cave and Bat Phone that we got glimpses of?

Dan Rafael
  (2:19 PM)

Indeed it was the Bat Phone in the very office I am typing this chat right now.

Noah (Plantation, FL)

If all of the members of Kiss were to face off in a battle to the death, who prevails?

Dan Rafael
  (2:19 PM)

Easy. Gene wins. He spits fire.

Dave (Washington DC)

How come my question was ignored????

Dan Rafael
  (2:20 PM)

It probably sucked.

Max (Seattle)

How many questions and comments did you receive about Timothy that you did not post? LMAO

Dan Rafael
  (2:20 PM)

Dozens.

Bubba (Ottawa,il)

Hey dan, I agree diaz-paulie should be on the east coast, no doubt. But chicago has had some good draws when mexican fighters are involved. diaz-erik m., juan diaz-julio diaz, thoes two fights drew pretty good. Also any tv coverage for adamak-golata? I am a big adamak fan. Thanks

Dan Rafael
  (2:23 PM)

Diaz may be Mexican-American but not from Chicago. David Diaz-Morales drew because Diaz was from Chicago and Morales was a Mexican legend. Juan Diaz-Julio Diaz didn't draw squat. I was there. The place was empty. As for Adamek-Golota, nothing that I am aware of yet.

Rhob Cee (Westside of NJ)

Does P-Williams stay at Middleweight if he beats Pavlik?

Dan Rafael
  (2:25 PM)

Sniffing glue today? Let's see -- Williams beats Pavlik to win the middleweight championship and then goes back to welterweight where he can't get fights anyway? Yeah, that makes sense.

Billy (Patchogue, NY)

I think you're guaranteed a star with the winner of the Super Six. With that said, I can't help but think that having the final fight on CBS in primetime would be a major, major deal. Imagine the buzz behind it? The winner of that fight becomes a superduperstar in my opinion. I hope the network execs consider this option.

Dan Rafael
  (2:25 PM)

That would be awesome.

J. Diaz (Florida)

Hey Dan, whats going on with Valero....i was so excited to see him against some of those big name lightweights....i read your notebook and what do you think is he ruining his prime career i mean he already has tht brain thing goign against him

Dan Rafael
  (2:28 PM)

Valero is totally screwed up.

Grey (Cape Cod, MA)

Apparently Solis weighed in at 271 lbs. Nice to see he trained, huh?

Dan Rafael
  (2:29 PM)

Ouch. That is not a good sign for him.

Dan Rafael
  (2:30 PM)

JM Lopez and Mtagwa were both 121. Gamboa and Garcia were each 124 1/2.

Dan Rafael
  (2:32 PM)

Thanks for chatting today Freaks. Hope you get a chance to check out the notebook, news stories and blogs. I'm headed for NYC tomorrow for the MSG card, so I hope you check out the coverage after the fight. Talk to you next week. Peace.
