Chat with Bill Williamson

Bill Williamson
  (2:03 PM)

Hi everyone, let's get rolling.

Howie (Indiana)

Bill, why in the world would the Raiders be starting 2 rookie receivers? I know Chaz is down but there has to be someone out there with some experience. Why not give Walker a shot, he can't be as bad as DHB. The Raiders have done Russell no favors by not having a quality WR on the roster. He has NEVER had a quality WR to throw to. Oh, what do you think about Murphy's Law now. Tell me he didn't have both feet down on that 3rd down play Sunday.

Bill Williamson
  (2:05 PM)

Howie, the team thinks DHB and Murphy can be stars in the fuure. The team just does not feel right abour Walker. I think the team believes he can seperate anymore. I would not expect Walker back next year. DHB and Murphy are getting good experience and they coould be a help for a long time down the road.

Blake (Abilene, TX)

Bill, I always find it interesting that the changes in the college game dictates the changes in the NFL game (ie the spread or the wild cat). Does the NFL make these changes because that is the way the players in college are getting taught? Or, do these changes happen in College first because of some many teams and so much parrity?

Bill Williamson
  (2:07 PM)

Interestign question, Blake. I think gimmick-like plays are used in college because teams rely on players who are good atheletes but may not be complete fotnball packages yet. So coaches use these kids to their strengths.

Drew (San Diego) [via mobile]

What are the chargers looking for in a trade?

Bill Williamson
  (2:08 PM)

Right now, I think they are just kind of looking in general. But safety and both lines could be areas of interest.

Jared (West Union IA)

Thanks again for this hour I love it. Who wins the battle of Darth Vader and young Skywalker this weekend in Denver? And what is up with Eddie Royal?

Bill Williamson
  (2:10 PM)

Cool Jared, I like it, too. I think New England has to be the favorite. But I don't expect Denver to be embarraassed. As for Royal, I'm baffled, too. He is being way underused. Dnever is 4-0 but it could still use more more offense. It's averaging 19 points a game.

john (sacramento, ca)

Hey Bill, I am a fusterated raider fan and believe the raiders should bench J. Russel if he has a bad start in New York. I feel the raiders can salvage some of the season with Gradkowski. Raider fans cant wait on Jrussel because we have been waiting since our loss in the superbowl. I say cut russel and go after a Qb in the 2010 draft. What do you think?

Bill Williamson
  (2:13 PM)

As long as the rest of the Oakland team is struggling as well, I think Russell needs to play. Who knows, he could develop. But he can't get better sitting on the bench the rest of the year. Oakland will need to make a decision about Russell after this year. So, it might as well get as much information on him as possible.

DB (Boulder)

Should the defensive focus of the Broncos be put on pressure on Tom Brady or taking away his weapons?

Bill Williamson
  (2:14 PM)

I think they go hand-in-hand. Denver's first touchdown against Dallas was setup by a Romo fumble on a sack. So, yes, presure Brady.

SprungOnSports (Long Island)

What does KC have to do this week to beat Dallas and do you think they can get their first win against an unstable opponent?

Bill Williamson
  (2:15 PM)

It will be tough this week, even though Dallas may be a litle vulnerable these days. Kansas City may have to a wait a little while. Maybe it can win at Washington next week.

JP (Eagle CO)

How much more work will Moreno get with Buckhalter out and how do you see him performing this week? Also have you heard anything on the status of Buck's ankle?

Bill Williamson
  (2:17 PM)

I'm hearing Buckhalter could be out 1-2 games with a high ankle sprain. If that's the case, Moreno could get up to 25 carries against New England.

Joey (NC)

How many raider wins this season? can we at least win 1 game against tha nfc east?

Bill Williamson
  (2:19 PM)

Right now, I'm saying 5-11. Maybe you can beat the Redskins. I know that's the second possible loss I gave Jim Zorn in the past three minutes. Nothing pesonal, coach.

Blake (Abilene, TX)

In regards to your J. Russel question? Do you feel the same about Vince Young? Is it a mistake that the Titans are not giving him playing time?

Bill Williamson
  (2:20 PM)

You know, I haven't thought about that one. Maybe now that the Titans' season is lost, yes, maybe Young shpuld be given a 12-game last chance.

Frankie (Greeley)

Is Glen Dorsey still around?

Bill Williamson
  (2:21 PM)

Yeah, he's coming around and getting better.

Eric (San Diego)

Marty ball was a problem in giving up leads late, is Norv ball the problem in giving up leads early?

Bill Williamson
  (2:24 PM)

Seems to be, Eirc. The Chargers are starting slow.

Joey (NC)

Any new news on tha tom cable situation?? or are we still waiting on tha DA's office to make a decision?? and if he does get arrested/suspended by tha league, who takes over??

Bill Williamson
  (2:26 PM)

I check every day. Joey. I think a decision could be made fairly soon. As far as possible replacements if Cable is suspeneded (and I think he will be if he is charged) I'd say assistants John Marshall, Tedd Tollnber and Paul Hackett are all possiblities.

Sean (Phoenix, AZ)

How much substance is there to the rumors stirring about Todd Haley and his losing the locker room (already) in KC?

Bill Williamson
  (2:27 PM)

Anytime a new coach starts 0-4 there are going to be questions like that. Look at McDaniels. He's new and he's 4-0. He has more talent than Haley does, but people are going to look at Haley and wonder why he's starting so slow. I do know Haley works very hard and is trying to turn it around.

Matt (Chicago)

Bill, regarding the Chargers and potential trades, do you know of any 3-4 DT's or DE's out there that other teams may be shopping? I've heard Shaun Rogers name mentioned, but that's the only one. It's clear that the DL they have now will just keep getting pushed around.

Bill Williamson
  (2:28 PM)

Rogers certaintly would help. He's a heck of a player when motivated. Going to a playoff contender could motivate him.

Frankie (Greeley)

Andre goodman must be pretty good, i rarely see teams throw towards him. Seems like a pick your poison type of thing with champ

Bill Williamson
  (2:29 PM)

He is very good. He's always been underrated. His big problem has been health. He's a big help, but still, he's no Champ. Few are.

Eric (San Diego)

When is it still considered too soon to just say Jamarcus Russell is a bust?

Bill Williamson
  (2:30 PM)

If he is still this bad at the end of the season. Then it's time.

Bill Williamson
  (2:34 PM)

Hey Raiders' fans, Eli Manning didn't practice for the second straight day with a heel problem. I still think he will play, but he may not be at full strength. Maybe the Raiders have a chance this weekend ... maybe.

Jason (Bmore)

How badly do you think Cassell is still hurt, and if he is ineffective this week, do you expect Haley to go with Croyle?

Bill Williamson
  (2:35 PM)

I think he is healed by now. He's just tyring to figure out the offense and learn how to play with much lesser talent than he did last year.

Eric (Chicago)

So, even if for some reason Russell has 1 or 2 good games, by his standards but not by everyone else's standards, would Russell STILL be considered a bust or breakout?

Bill Williamson
  (2:36 PM)

He has to show it for much longer than a game or two.

mj (gj)

Bill, when denver traded for smith in the draft. They traded away a 1st round pick. Can you explain which pick they gave and where they will be picking next year?

Bill Williamson
  (2:37 PM)

They traded away their own pick. They have Chicago's. So wherever Chicago, which is 3-1, finishes, Denver will pick.

JASON (Maryland)

Bill what's up with TE drafted by the Raiders Myers where is he? Will he get to play?

Bill Williamson
  (2:38 PM)

He's been inactive. He had a nice preseason and he could be a player down the road.

jim (sf)

you know anything about the accuracy of the reports that J. Russell has been late for a few meetings and even missed a couple?

Bill Williamson
  (2:40 PM)

All I know is Cable wouldn't address it. Cable has been quick to defend Russell, so if it weren't true, I'd think Cable would bury it. Just my thoughts and I'm not saying the story is true.

Chris (Amarillo, TX)

How impressed have you been with Andra Davis? His signing was kind of overlooked in the offseason, but he is a seasoned 3-4 guy and a tackling machine. I think he is the most underrated player on Denver's defense.

Bill Williamson
  (2:40 PM)

The team raves about him. He is a big piece of the puzzle I do believe.

matt (spokane)

when is it time to say that Larry johnson is a has-been?

Bill Williamson
  (2:41 PM)

It might be close, Matt, and that's a bummer. He's been a workhorse.

Bobby (Boston)

Who would you recommend for a survivor pick this weeks? Philadelphia Eagles (vs. Tampa Bay), Pittsburgh Steelers (at Detroit) or Vikings (at Rams)

Bill Williamson
  (2:42 PM)

I love home teams against bad teams ... But it's not my fault if you lose, bro.

TJ (NYC)

If Russell doesn't improve this year, do the Raiders draft another Qb or try and get a FA? They need to make sure that DHB and McFadden develop even if Russell fails.

Bill Williamson
  (2:44 PM)

If the team decides Russell is not the long-term answer after this eyar, yes, a quarterback will likley be brought in. They could draft someone early.

Stuart (Brooklyn, NY)

Hi Bill. Do you think LT goes off in the next three games against weaker opponents or has he lost a step and are the Chargers relying more on Rivers to win games for them? Thanks!

Bill Williamson
  (2:48 PM)

I don't think we can say Denver's run defnse is weak competition. But if LT doesn't come out of the KC and Oakland games with, at least, one 100-yard performance, something may be wrong.

Evan (Denver)

Hey Bill! The Broncos are doing great, but WR Brandon Marshall and DE Elvis Dumervile are both going to be free agents demanding lots of money. Who do you think we will keep?

Bill Williamson
  (2:49 PM)

If there is not a new CBA, they will both be restricted free agents. So Denver may have some time.

Al Davis (Oakland)

I can't wait to see the 40 times on Tebow, Lockler, McCoy and Bradford!!!!!!!!

Bill Williamson
  (2:50 PM)

That might be your problem, worrying about 40 times on QBs.

Frankie (Greeley, CO)

GO ROCKIES!!!

Bill Williamson
  (2:51 PM)

I'm away from the TV, but I thought I heard they scored in the first. True?

Jay (Charlotte, NC)

Who do you see lasting longer in DC: Jim Zorn or Jason Cambell?

Bill Williamson
  (2:53 PM)

It might be a double departure.

Haden (Houston, TX)

Which QB will have the bigger game in KansasCity this week? Romo or Cassel?

Bill Williamson
  (2:54 PM)

I have to go with Romo.

Al Davis (Oakland)

You are banned from the Colliseum for being so harsh on my beloved Raiders!

Bill Williamson
  (2:54 PM)

Dang it.

Frankie (Greeley, CO)

How is Robert Ayers developing? I saw him a bit more this past sunday.

Bill Williamson
  (2:55 PM)

Yeah, I think he is coming along. If he can give a pass-rush burst, it'd be a big bonus.

mike (englewood, co)

Is this the best Broncos Defense you have ever seen? And can the Broncos keep up their defensive dominance all year?

Bill Williamson
  (2:56 PM)

That 2006 defense was pretty nasty for the first six weeks of the season .... Then it just imploded.

Keith (Millis, MA)

Usain Bolt starting at Wide Receiver for the Raiders next year?

Bill Williamson
  (3:00 PM)

Bolt was on SportsCenter last week or so and he was asked about the NFL. He said he'd only want to be a runing back in the NFL and not a receiver because receivers got blown up so much. But he said teams would only want him a receiver because he's so tal, so he does not wnat to play. It was very interesting.

Bill Williamson
  (3:01 PM)

Hey everyone, great hour. Thanks for your time. I will talk to you next Thursday. Enjoy Week 5.
