Chat with David Thorpe

David Thorpe
  (12:01 PM)

It's on, baby. Well, at least on Courtside Live. So maybe we can't watch or even listen to NBA games yet, but they are being played. Sweet. Let's get to it. I have the ballet, "Giselle", playing from Itunes radio. Good stuff."That John Denver is really full of it".

John No. 17 (Los Angeles)

Dave, it's sounding like a vast consensus of people are on the Lakers bandwagon (many as unwilling passengers) to win the Finals. Can you recall a team being predicted this strongly to win the finals during preseason?

David Thorpe
  (12:01 PM)

Yes, frequently.

Marc (Charlotte)

Thorpe, do you think Danny Green can get meaningful minutes for the Cavs?

David Thorpe
  (12:02 PM)

No, the guy in front of him at the 3 is pretty good. And they have two solid 2's, including West.

David (London, UK)

With the NBA bringing some pre-season games to our part of the world, what is the long term prospectus of the NBA going world-wide? What effect would such extreme travel have on the athletes, and thus, the game? Would it diminish the overall quality of the NBA?

David Thorpe
  (12:03 PM)

I think it makes some sense if eastern teams took 10 day road trips over there before returning. Tougher for western teams. Still lots to work out.

Ray (San Antonio)

I was gonna write in a question about Blair possibly breaking the most rebounds in a game by a rookie if he got more than 30 minutes one game. But I see Wilt hold the record at 45. So I will just sit back and enjoy the idea of Blair being a Spur.

David Thorpe
  (12:03 PM)

Lots of DB questions.

Dean (Chicago, Il)

David,In your opinion did the Bulls make a mistake not adding some pieces this offseason to build on the momentum of the Bulls / Celtics series last year or is it better to grow and add in 2010?

David Thorpe
  (12:03 PM)

Possibly. But I still think they have some deals coming.

Tyler (Wisconsin)

Most Improved?

David Thorpe
  (12:04 PM)

Anthony Randolph, Beasley.

gino (vankuilenburg)

i guess all you kobe haters and laker hater at espn have to eat crow. yall dont know anything about the nba you need to give your check back before they arrest you for grand left. idiots

David Thorpe
  (12:04 PM)

Well said Gino. You have a way with words.

Terry (Madison)

I missed your chats over the summer, how have you been?

David Thorpe
  (12:05 PM)

I'm good Terry, thanks. How are you?

Paul (Trenton, NJ)

The early returns regarding S. Dalembert in the Princeton offense have been solid. Any chance you see this as working or is this something just being said to build his own confidence?

David Thorpe
  (12:05 PM)

Probably not smart to bash your players in the pre-season.

Tyler (Wisconsin)

Who's going to be left out of the Spurs frontcourt rotation? Mahinmi, McDyess, Blair, Haislip

David Thorpe
  (12:06 PM)

Mahinmi probably, though I think there will be lots of rotation adjustments over the season.

Tom (New Orleans)

Thorpe, how can I find you on Facebook? I hope to trash you "in person" rather than a chat.

David Thorpe
  (12:06 PM)

Great!! David B. Thorpe. Bring it, but remember, I'm allowed to "de-friend" you.

Tyler (Wisconsin)

Could Clippers make the playoffs?

David Thorpe
  (12:07 PM)

Sure. It will be tough, but it's possible. They can pull some good trades to help as well.

Tyler (Wisconsin)

Do you think Rambis is the righty guy to turn the T-wolves around?

David Thorpe
  (12:07 PM)

Absolutely. He's the right guy.

Binh (Vancouver)

Thorpedo! Tell an admin to fix this chat. The q's and a's aren't synced up!

David Thorpe
  (12:07 PM)

Sorry!!

Rock (Sacramento)

Coach- I've never heard what you thought of Vlade as a player, but did you see Stein's story about him- he seems like your kind of guy; when getting taunted about rings in L.A. he responded "I have one, I got it from from my wife, that's the most important one." Good man, good player, and he would be an improvement over any of the pathetic Kings today!

David Thorpe
  (12:07 PM)

Outside of the smoking thing, I always loved him.

Lamar (brooklyn)

will beasley be the beast this year?

David Thorpe
  (12:08 PM)

Looking that way.

Terry (Madison)

Are you excited for the new South Park tonight?

David Thorpe
  (12:09 PM)

I have not watched it for years, but I heard one of the guys on the Simmons podcast recently and he was really funny and smart.

MIke (Akron)

Your thoughts on Danny Green are Dumb. Your thoughts that the Cavs aren't going to win the championship are Dumber. Kidding about you being dumb, love you Thorpe. Thoughts on JJ Hickson...he looked good yesterday!!!

David Thorpe
  (12:10 PM)

You lost me Mike. But I've been high on JJ since he came out. He could be a huge factor for them.

Ted (Portland)

Greg Oden is looking more fit and polished offensively. Do you see him breaking out this year?

David Thorpe
  (12:10 PM)

Yes, he's a MIP candidate too.

Nick (Italy)

Hi, four rapid questions:Will Paul Harris find a roster spot somewhere in the NBA?Is Blair going to play 15-20 minutes at night for the Spurs? Is Richard Jefferson a better player than Geral Wallace (leaving their contracts apart)? No quotation to start the chat?

David Thorpe
  (12:11 PM)

No, yes, yes, and yes. "That John Denver is really full of it". Didn't it post?

MIke (Akron)

I was referring to your quote, I thought it was from Dumb and Dumber.

David Thorpe
  (12:12 PM)

Boom!! Sorry, I got little sleep last night. Nicely done.

Jay (Ann Arbor, MI)

This is like Jeopardy... you give us the answers and we have to guess what the questions are! Best chat yet!!!

David Thorpe
  (12:12 PM)

Is it that messed up?

Mike (L.A)

Why is Dirk Nowitzki considered a superstar in the league but Pau Gasol isn't? Pau is a much better player then Dirk and has a ring now.

David Thorpe
  (12:13 PM)

Pau is one of the best bigs on the planet. Period.

Lane Kiffin (Rocky Top)

Thorpe, you are really bringing it in today's chat. It is obvious you don't have the flu.

David Thorpe
  (12:14 PM)

Thanks. Hey, we want your dad back.

David Thorpe
  (12:14 PM)

Thanks. Hey, we want your dad back.

J.B. (Dunmore, PA)

Have you seen the Curb Your Enthusiam episodes with the Seinfeld cast?

David Thorpe
  (12:14 PM)

Your close to a ban, JB.

Regina (Compton, CA)

First... thank you for putting family first! You are a great example to my sons, who don't have the blessing of many positive male influences. Secondly, do you hold the popular belief that the Ron Artest experiment will not work? Don't you think his intensity and overall talent will directly address last years greatest vulnerabilities--lack of consistency and intensity? Also, do you feel a healthy KG and company are better equipped to make the finals than either the Cavs and the Magic?

David Thorpe
  (12:15 PM)

Thanks Regina. Count me as an Artest doubtor. Sure, it can work. But I don't like the odds. Yes, I like the Celts to win the east.

Anthony (Tampa)

Now that Kareem isn't gonna be working with Bynum much anymore why don't you go work with him? You can turn him into a 20 10 guy

David Thorpe
  (12:17 PM)

Right, I want to move my family so I can work with one guy with shaky knees. Do I seem stupid, or are you trying to run me from Tampa?

Chizzie (Thornton, Co)

David whats your thoughts on my Nuggets? Do they have wat it takes to win it all this season?

David Thorpe
  (12:17 PM)

If I had to pick an "overrated" team, it would be them. Yes, they will make the playoffs, but I see them falling a bit.

Andy (Boston)

If he can get healthy do you see Tyler Hansbrough doing anything this year? Do you think he will ever be a starter in the NBA?

David Thorpe
  (12:18 PM)

Not likely a long term starter, but he'll be in rotations for a decade.

Garron (Boston)

Hey Thorpe,Is there a strict diet you put your players on?

David Thorpe
  (12:19 PM)

No. But we talk about what foods to avoid and what to take second helpings of.

Keith (Las Vegas)

Do you think the young Bucks can be competative in the East this season. I am a believer in Coach Skiles.

David Thorpe
  (12:19 PM)

Competitive, absolutely.

Derek (Detroit)

I know it's preseason and a small sample size but I have a feeling many teams are going to regret passing on Dejuan Blair, some multiple times.

David Thorpe
  (12:20 PM)

Ask that in two years. That's why they didn't pick him-afraid he would not be walking then.

Tyler (Wisconsin)

Hey Thorpedo, who do you like as the steal of the 2009 draft class?

David Thorpe
  (12:20 PM)

Blair, of course.

dave (Memphis, TN)

Coach T, I heard you talk, back in June, about Dejuan Blair. How he should have gone just after the top 10 once it was discovered he had no knee's. Still think you are right?

David Thorpe
  (12:21 PM)

Without doubt. How many guys drafted 11-20 will be in rotations in 2 years? To me, taking Blair was worth the risk.

David Thorpe
  (12:21 PM)

What does Simmons say the NBA stands for?

Justin (Madison)

What's your take on J-Fly (Johnny Flynn) this season? Dark Horse ROY or just sweet nickname? Or Both?

David Thorpe
  (12:21 PM)

Both.

Sara (Los Angeles)

Thoughts on Lester Hudson?

David Thorpe
  (12:22 PM)

He's much more than just a scorer. I love him. We coached him before his senior year. I thought he should have come out then.

Matt (Long Beach)

If the Lakers can stay fairly healthy this year do you see them passing or tying the bulls 72 wins?

David Thorpe
  (12:22 PM)

That's crazy talk.

Llyod (Denver)

According to the map we've only gone 2 inches.

David Thorpe
  (12:23 PM)

My wife hates the movie, but I love it.

John Boyko (Pa)

Do you see Stephen Curry being the best rookie this year?

David Thorpe
  (12:23 PM)

No, but it is possible.

Bobcats Nation (NC)

What kind of feelings should we have going into the '09 season?

David Thorpe
  (12:24 PM)

Defensive ones.

Kyron (Toronto)

Just over 20 minutes in and you've already taken more questions than Hollinger did in an hour yesterday. Should we be worried about Turkoglu fatigue/knee issues?

David Thorpe
  (12:25 PM)

C'mon. I've published about 1000 words since July, he's at about 12 trillion. Yes, I'd be slightly concerned about that.

JM (Iowa City)

What do you make of Austin Daye for the Pistons? His block on Wade was pretty sick. Will he play and help the team this year?

David Thorpe
  (12:25 PM)

He's better than I anticipated. I think he'll get some rotation time.

jason (kelso, wa)

Hollinger's PER system predicts Lamarcus Aldridge will take a step back in efficiency, this season. As much as I like quantifying performance - this flies in the face of every player development axiom I can think of. 24, improving every year - and the work ethic/desire to be great.

David Thorpe
  (12:27 PM)

You can't expect a formula to get everything right. He could have another year of improvement.

Maria (LA)

Could you explain further the foods to avoid and the ones to take second helpings of? I guess you mean pizza versus veggies?

David Thorpe
  (12:28 PM)

It's common sense, but not always to players. Avoid fried foods, sugar, too much salt, etc.

Noah R (Miami Fl)

How high of a chance is it for the heat to get amare, bosh, or boozer come 2010

David Thorpe
  (12:28 PM)

Their chances of landing a star are high.

chris (chicago)

in or out thorpe, the bulls trade for boozer this year?

David Thorpe
  (12:29 PM)

In, if Utah can get what it wants.

Josh Tampa FL [via mobile]

Is Ryan Anderson going to end up being a steal in the Vince trade for the Magic?

David Thorpe
  (12:29 PM)

Yes.

RC (Dallas)

Last year, my Mavs killed the Spurs, albeit without Ginobilli, both teams have made similar upgrades yet the Spurs are seen as head and shoulders above the mavs...what gives Thorpedo??

David Thorpe
  (12:30 PM)

Um, Manu is world class.

Will J (Portland, OR)

Thorpedo, with all of the offseason moves, I think the biggest contributor could end up being the most overlooked (Andre Miller to Portland).

David Thorpe
  (12:31 PM)

Possibly. I think Wallace will make some huge plays in June for Boston.

Bernard (Chicago)

Almost every team talks about improving their defense this time of year, but can the Bulls actually do it? They have some holdovers from the Skiles teams(Deng/Hinrich) and some capable defenders in Tyrus and Noah, but will we see some consistency on the defensive end?

David Thorpe
  (12:32 PM)

It starts at the 1, and the coach too.

Bryan (Ohio)

Do you think the addition of Shaq makes the Cavs the favorites in the Eastern Conference?

David Thorpe
  (12:32 PM)

No.

Matt (Anchorage)

Hey Dave, how is your program different from what Tim Grover does in Chicago?

David Thorpe
  (12:33 PM)

I don't really know, other than he gets a lot more all-stars than we do, and it sounds like they play a lot. We don't. But I love what he does, including things like acupuncture. There are so many ways to help players, so it's smart to offer lots of options.

Tyler (Wisconsin)

What are James Harden's chances at ROY?

David Thorpe
  (12:34 PM)

Not great, but he should be on the first team.

Glenn (Memphis)

Biggest, most difficult problem for the Griz to overcome?

David Thorpe
  (12:34 PM)

A lack of Gretzky's.

Chris (OKC)

I am sure that I will ask a stupid question at some point, so if you go ahead and ban me we can save everyone some time.

David Thorpe
  (12:34 PM)

Done.

Terry (Madison)

I dare you to say something positive about the Milwaukee Bucks.

David Thorpe
  (12:35 PM)

Brandon Jennings is fun to play with.

David Thorpe
  (12:35 PM)

And I loved the atmosphere inside the arena last season (but the weather outside really sucked).

Frank (Minneapolis)

Will any big free agent names want to play for the Twolves after this year?

David Thorpe
  (12:36 PM)

Doubtful.

Tim (Chicago)

Most underrated team going into the season???

David Thorpe
  (12:36 PM)

Hornets?

Adam (Sacramento)

Will the Kings still be the worst team in the league?

David Thorpe
  (12:36 PM)

50/50.

Dave (Boston)

I was just wondering if you read Ball Don't Lie over at Yahoo! and what do you think of the writers there?

David Thorpe
  (12:37 PM)

Actually, I just read Henry. Whatever he links to is what I read, beyond all the team beat writers and our team.

Bottle (Philly)

What's the one movie that if someone doesn't like, basically ruins anything good about them. Mine is Shawshank.

David Thorpe
  (12:38 PM)

Maybe Sideways.

Steven (MN)

Would you ever want to work on a coaching staff for a team again?

David Thorpe
  (12:39 PM)

No, never, never.

Brandon (Cedar Rapids, IA)

David, any thoughts on the new Rockets members? Budinger seems to be shooting well, at least.

David Thorpe
  (12:39 PM)

he was impressive in Vegas too.

JM (Iowa City)

As an opera fan, what say you about the recent brouhaha at the opening of Tosca? Ever booed an opera?

David Thorpe
  (12:40 PM)

I missed that. But in Europe I think it's normal for them to boo.

Ryan Anderson (Orlando, FL)

How is my game any different from Austin Croshere's?

David Thorpe
  (12:41 PM)

You are more a more athletic and fluid guy.

jason (Orlando)

What is the one rule you would change about the NBA if you could?

David Thorpe
  (12:41 PM)

No limitations on defense.

Dave (Boston)

Ouch. posting my question without answering. You make me sad

David Thorpe
  (12:41 PM)

I did!!

Herman (Toronto)

Just getting back into Basketball after a couple years off. I have been working out, but I find I am having trouble getting any "lift" when I am driving to the basket.

David Thorpe
  (12:42 PM)

Practice jumping each morning before you play.

SteveFitz (Cicero, IL)

James Johnson chances for ROY?

David Thorpe
  (12:42 PM)

Zip.

Bottle (Philly)

Is LeBron that powerful that he can have players from OTHER teams in his city traded???

David Thorpe
  (12:42 PM)

Apparently, yes.

Mike (Detroit)

I don't think you can be a superstar in this league and #2 on your own team. All Star Sure. But Superstar? No.

David Thorpe
  (12:43 PM)

So which guy is not a super, KG or PP?

Alex (Davie)

Just to understand your reasoning, what makes you think Beasley will be one of the most improved and a "beast" this season?

David Thorpe
  (12:44 PM)

Beasley is so good that he tends to float a lot. But with purpose added to his game, and some maturity, he'll float less.

Alex (Littleton, CO)

Thorpedo - Which rookie could make a surprise challenge to B Griffin for the ROY?

David Thorpe
  (12:45 PM)

Blair, if he got 25 mins a game. Harden, if Durant or Green got hurt.

chris (chicago)

bigger legacy jason kidd or derrick rose?

David Thorpe
  (12:45 PM)

Kidd.

Mike (LA)

Thorpedo, you think Shannon Brown can have a breakout year this year and give the Lakers the type of energy, hustle and defense that we lost with Ariza?

David Thorpe
  (12:46 PM)

Not really.

Tom (NY)

Rondo AllStar this year yes/no?

David Thorpe
  (12:46 PM)

Yes.

David Thorpe
  (12:46 PM)

Yes.

David Thorpe
  (12:46 PM)

Yes.

Noam (Israel)

Getting a little a head of ourselves, but what trade do you see coming in the future? I think that the Cavs could really use a jump-shooting 4 - is Troy Murphy available?

David Thorpe
  (12:47 PM)

That's the hole they need to fill. The stretch 4. Can you say Rob Kurz?

Carl Sierra (Georgia)

Do you think the Knicks could sneak into the playoffs?

David Thorpe
  (12:48 PM)

Sure. And Gallo is an MIP guy.

Mike (Akron)

WHOA!!!! Stretch 4? JJ HICKSON!! you know, the guy you were really high on!

David Thorpe
  (12:48 PM)

Is he making 3's now?

Demetric (Orlando)

Be a man Thorpe and admit that the Hawks had the underrated offseason and Joe Johnson has help now

David Thorpe
  (12:49 PM)

I'm not convinced.

SteveFitz (Cicero, IL)

Derrick Rose allstar this year or in a couple more years?

David Thorpe
  (12:50 PM)

Nelson, Harris, Rondo, Mo Williams-has to beat out a few of those guys. Not easy to do.

Scott (Chicago)

Outside of the ESPN crew, what other basketball writers and blogs do you read on a regular basis?

David Thorpe
  (12:51 PM)

I mostly just read the stats guys. The rest is up to me to decipher.

Mikhail Porkhorov (East Rutherford, New Jersey)

Am I inheriting a team that is going in the right direction with a legitimate young core in Harris, Lee, and Lopez? Will my Ny-ets be championship contenders in a few years?

David Thorpe
  (12:51 PM)

I like their foundation.

Carlos (Atlanta)

You will be convinced once the Hawks win the East

David Thorpe
  (12:51 PM)

Yes, that would do it.

SteveFitz (Cicero, IL)

Rose can't beat out Nelson and Mo? Come on. He also went toe to toe with Rando, but Rando and Harris will be tough to beat this year, for sure.

David Thorpe
  (12:52 PM)

It's not just the players, it's how their teams are doing.

Taylor and Robin (PHX)

Will we ever get out of our brother's shadows?

David Thorpe
  (12:52 PM)

No.

David Thorpe
  (12:52 PM)

No.

BRIAN (DC)

Can the Wizards compete in the Southeeast this year? #8 seed in the Eastern Playoffs maybe?

David Thorpe
  (12:53 PM)

Maybe.

Noam (Israel)

Rub Kurz? Really? No knock on Rob, but I don't see him getting more than 10 min a game in that rotation...

David Thorpe
  (12:54 PM)

That would be great, actually. But that's what stretch 4's do-make long shots in tight games.

Nate (Madison)

Bucks next playoff appearence will be with Redd or after his contract is done and he is gone?

David Thorpe
  (12:54 PM)

After.

Lamar Odom (LA)

Avoid sugar? Look at me David!

David Thorpe
  (12:54 PM)

Exactly.

Andrew (Missouri)

Why is no one talking about Dejaun Blair, and how he's the next charles barkley? He had 16 points, 19 boards in 22 mins, and dominated thabeet everytime they played heads up, he's by far the single most impressive rookie, yet you don't hear much... why???

David Thorpe
  (12:55 PM)

Because the game just ended 15 hours ago, and it's the preseason.

Josh (Toronto)

Stats guys seem to be really down on The Raps. Can they go against the grain? Is Bargnani going to prove he was worth the number one pick this year?

David Thorpe
  (12:56 PM)

No, he won't play to his draft spot. But he should be very good.

Jeff (Toronto)

Nobody talking about Blair? 1/3 of this chat has been about him! David, can you name some players you expect to have a breakout year this year? Thanks.

David Thorpe
  (12:56 PM)

I have, just read this chat.

Alex (Littleton, CO)

Are you drinking the Gallinari kool-aid?

David Thorpe
  (12:56 PM)

Gulping it, actually.

Colin (Cleveland)

Thorpedo! Somewhat off topic, what are thoughts on the NBA Draft Lottery system? Keep it or switch to record based system? Seems so silly to have a closed doors lottery?

David Thorpe
  (12:57 PM)

I'd change it.

Nate (Madison)

Bogut, one of the more underrated centers in the league? His numbers have continued to improve each year before his injury this past year.

David Thorpe
  (12:57 PM)

Yes he is.

christopher (san antonio tx)

whats your take on the spurs this year?

David Thorpe
  (12:58 PM)

Meeting Boston in the Finals.

chris (chicago)

carl landry mip?

David Thorpe
  (12:58 PM)

Good call. Seems ready to be a beast, again.

Chad (Utah)

Are there any possible trade scenarios in which the Jazz can trade Boozer for a wing that can shoot a basketball and defend a little bit?

David Thorpe
  (12:59 PM)

Many.

Abir (Long Beach)

Think Adam Morrison can score any playing time this year?

David Thorpe
  (12:59 PM)

Not much.

David Thorpe
  (1:00 PM)

That's it for me. Thanks to all, and have a great rest of the week. Be safe.
