Chat with AJ Mass

AJ Mass
  (10:57 AM)

Good morning gang... it's a rainy October 15, but so what? I'm still here to provide a little fantasy advice as the football season moves on! Second cup of coffee in hand, USA in the World Cup... let's get started!

El Toro (Nuevo Jersey)

Senor Mass, why are projections always inconsistent with rankings? It makes critical decisions so much harder!

AJ Mass
  (10:58 AM)

Mon amigo, clearly you do not get the ESPN Fantasy newsletter... if you did, you'd see today's lead story, written by yours truly, addressing that very question.

Ryan (Milwaukee)

As much as Turner's 3 TD day helped my team last week, in a PPR league and yardage heavy league am I better going with Pierre this week? Also have Benson and Mendenhall

AJ Mass
  (11:00 AM)

Turner will play. This we know. Pierre? Not so sure... a phantom injury has reared its head, coming off the bye week, and right now, I'd expect - at a minimum - a split with Bell. The matchup is stellar, but we're going to have to wait until gameday for the call.

Justin (Lynchburg VA)

Is all this just hype around Steve Smith (Car) for this week? Maybe I'm just holding a grudge against Sims-Walker who cost the game last week, but who do you like the most: Braylon Edwards, Percy Harvin, or Sims-Walker?

AJ Mass
  (11:02 AM)

I like Smith versus the Bucs. MSW did indeed ruin many a fantasy lineup last week - not only for his owners, but all Jags players who were effected by such a last-minute game-plan change. It's not that you'll hold a grudge - it's whether or not Garrard will. All that said, have to love what Edwards has done in such limited time with Jets. I go his way, especially with Harvin banged up a bit.

Chris (Boston)

Trying to dump Slaton for a #1 WR. Would are some targets to go after?

AJ Mass
  (11:03 AM)

Whoever you can get. I'm not sure, given his lackluster work so far this season you'll get a WR1 in return.

Quinn (VA)

Good morning AJ, what are the chances that Megatron and/or Jericho play this week? If they're out, I need to grab either Royal, Nicks, Walter, Wallace, or Henry as replacements. Any of those guys strike you as a decent replacements?

AJ Mass
  (11:04 AM)

I'm leaning to negatory on both. Royal has worked his way back into fantasy relevance, though Marshall is still the go-to guy. Personally, I like Walter best of all with Schaub likely to throw a lot and Cincy doubling AJ hard.

andrew (nashville)

Brees or McNabb?

AJ Mass
  (11:05 AM)

McNabb by far has the better matchup, but may well go the Eli route and bail at the half. I still go with Donovan, but cumulatively, Brees may well end up with better numbers.

AJ Mass
  (11:05 AM)

McNabb by far has the better matchup, but may well go the Eli route and bail at the half. I still go with Donovan, but cumulatively, Brees may well end up with better numbers.

Ray (Willow Grove, PA)

Jamaal Charles worth a stash in a deep 16 team league? You all keep saying LJ is on his last leg with KC, but he still plays week after week. Thx

AJ Mass
  (11:07 AM)

I think so, especially with Battle now on IR. All it takes is one hit, and then Charles is the only really viable option.

JTS (Ohio)

Is A.Gonzo really guaranteed his starting spot when he returns from his injury? He really isn't truly a proven player yet.

AJ Mass
  (11:08 AM)

I think he gets a chance to win it back, but Collie and Garcon have done well in his absence - it's not a done deal here.

Ryan (Atlanta)

How do you sign up for the ESPN Fantasy newsletter you mentioned but wouldn't elaborate on?

AJ Mass
  (11:08 AM)

Dave (SD)

Hines playin great right now. Desean Jax goose-egged in blowout. Play hines and let desean sit again?

AJ Mass
  (11:10 AM)

Against Cleveland, absolutely. DeSean's goose-egg was more of a fluky thing b/c Maclin was SO hot and he'll score some against Oakland, but I'll stick with the old reliable Hines.

Drew (Cornwall)

Brady for Rodgers, straight up? Am I crazy to think A-Rod will get it going before Brady?

AJ Mass
  (11:11 AM)

I've got them 1-2 this week, so it's a coin toss for the present. As for going forward, as down as I have been on Brady, I'd hold on to him for now. Moss and Welker are only now getting back into rhythm and I'd like to be there when they work it all out.

Rob (Denver)

What are your thoughts on Flacco for this week against the Vikings? Thanks!

AJ Mass
  (11:13 AM)

I like him. You see Baltimore-Vikings and you automatically think low-scoring affair. Not me. I see the run possibly struggling, which limits McGahee, but Rice out of the backfield and a shaky secondary for the Vikes keeps Flacco in my lineup.

Alexis (Malibu, CA)

Hey somebody just offered me Slaton/Boldin for my Forte/Garcon? Do I take it? Thanks

AJ Mass
  (11:14 AM)

Yes. Boldin is by far a better receiver, as Garcon is really an all-or-nothing Devery Henderson type. And although Slaton has been a bust this season, Forte hasn't been so studly himself.

mike (Rutland)

Moreno ranked ungodly high this week. Great. However with Buckhalter practicing do we have to temper expectations. Thoughts?

AJ Mass
  (11:15 AM)

I think Buckhalter may get some carries, but this team is still, even with new coaches, a "go with the hot hand" kind of offense. Moreno starts, and the matchup is solid.

Chuck (NYC)

Can you offer any insight to the Cooley/Carlson staying in to block more argument? would you start olsen over them? thanks man.

AJ Mass
  (11:17 AM)

Cooley is the bigger concern, because Campbell needs the help more than Hasselbeck. I'd definitely start Olsen over him, but with a solid start under his belt, I like Matt to find Carlson more this week.

Teddy (LA)

In desperate need of a RB due to byes, injuries, and poor matchups. Tried to land Bell now that Pierre is "limited", but unsuccessful. Does Fargas have any upside or is it primarily the Michael Bush Show until McFadden returns? Thanks AJ!

AJ Mass
  (11:18 AM)

I think neither Raiders' back has a "Show"- maybe a Digital Short, like on SNL. Only more sad than funny.

Matthew (Las Vegas)

Hey AJ, with SF DST on a bye I need a stop gap. Not much is available in my league - Seattle, Wash, Carolina. Are any of these viable or should I just go without and not risk negative points?

AJ Mass
  (11:20 AM)

I despise leagues that would allow you to take the zero. Owners should always go for the win and use those roster spots appropriately. Man up and take a shot. (Carolina isn't a bad bet)

D (Toronto)

Who do I start this week berrian or harvin?

AJ Mass
  (11:21 AM)

Berrian. At least for now... Harvin has been held out of practice, and that's not a good sign.

Michael (Ann Arbor)

Given that both are somewhat hampered by lingering injuries this week, would you start Pierre Thomas or Tomlinson?

AJ Mass
  (11:22 AM)

If Thomas suits up, you play him. Especially since LDT goes on MNF. The worst thing to do is to hold out Thomas, who ends up playing and to then see LDT sit for three quarters.

Kyle (Miami)

MSW, Steve Smith (NYG), and Donald Driver, I need 2. Smith has the worst matchup but can I really sit him at this point?

AJ Mass
  (11:24 AM)

I think the playing conditions being ideal indoors and the very real possibility that the Giants air it out against the Saints make Smith the better start. And don't pooh-pooh the Lions D. They may well give Rodgers some fits.

Matt (GA)

Assuming FWP is goes this weekend, which it sounds like he is, who do you start? Him or Mendenhall? How do you see the workload? 60/40? 50/50?

AJ Mass
  (11:26 AM)

I'm not sold on FWP yet. Early interviews this week with him had Willie himself uncertain of his status for Sunday. I'd much rather hear him say he wants to go before listening to the "optimism" of the coaches.

Tom (NJ)

AJ, who are you starting as a flex this week: LT2 or the WR formely known as THE Steve Smith (carolina version)?

AJ Mass
  (11:26 AM)

Smith, and it's not even close.

Jake (Eden Prairie, MN)

Hey AJ, What about Sammy Morris this week? what numbers do you think he will get?

AJ Mass
  (11:28 AM)

This is the week I think we find out all we need to know about the Pats. Tennessee is all but done, and while I think they try their darnedest, Brady should throw for 300 and Morris should get 70 and a score. If not, I'm looking for value on all NE players.

Cedric (Cincinnati)

Why am I not owned in 100% of leagues yet? What more do I have to do?

AJ Mass
  (11:30 AM)

Not be Cedric Benson. People simply don't like getting burned and hold grudges. Two weeks ago, he topped the ESPN projections and stunk it up. Last week he was ranked more "normally" and went off. He's a pain in the keister and that turns a lot of owners away.

Sarah (Austin)

Not a sexy choice, but choose one for bye-week TE this week: K. Boss or D. Fells? Thanks!

AJ Mass
  (11:31 AM)

Not sexy at all. Fells is my choice, only b/c I'm not sold on Boss' health being 100 percent. However, if I'm gambling, I go with Foschi on Cincy.

Stefan (NJ)

AJ, second cup of coffee yet? We are halfway through... I've been spending your whole chat tryin to find an archive of the fantasy newsletter and no success! Any place to find it? (I signed up for the future...)

AJ Mass
  (11:33 AM)

Well done, Stefan. As for archives, I am not sure... perhaps a call to customer service might yield results... it's not a feature that is posted on the website anywhere.

Marco (Crimebridge, MA)

I thought we banned using the word "sexy" when it comes to fantasy sports??

AJ Mass
  (11:33 AM)

Call me Justin Timberlake.

Drew (Tampa, FL)

Tough decision...Hasselbeck or Rodgers?? Both have unreal matchups!

AJ Mass
  (11:34 AM)

I like Rodgers better, provided his offensive line protects him well.

Ross (ME)

Mr. Timberlake, I have Pierre Thomas and Mike Bell is available. Do i grab him? Who to drop from these: Massaquoi, Hightower, Maclin, or Donald Brown? Other RBs are Jacobs and SJax. many thanks

AJ Mass
  (11:35 AM)

I'd start Jacobs and S.Jax this week, but yes, I'd cut Mo-Ma for Bell in a heartbeat. RB depth is far more important to fantasy success.

JoLiEt JaKE (Joliet, IL)

Hey Justin!! Who is sexier (better value) the rest of the way: Knox or Nicks?

AJ Mass
  (11:36 AM)

Nicks. Especially if these TO rumors happen to come true.

Reggie (Denver)

Ray Rice has put up nice numbers this year so far. Is he an every week must start (ie. this week against Minn) over Slaton or Pierre Thomas?

AJ Mass
  (11:37 AM)

I'd not say he's an automatic start, except in PPR, but I personally love the matchup this week.

Dan (NY)

I need a TE for this opponent is starting Garard, and I am starting MIN D, do I start M Lewis, T Heap, or B Watson in .5ppr league?

AJ Mass
  (11:38 AM)

Watson's status is in question, so I go with Lewis.

joe (NY)

ummm a.j. what TO rumors do you speak of??

AJ Mass
  (11:39 AM)

Bills are awful. TO is cranky. Chicago is a lovely alternative.

JoLiEt JaKE (Joliet, IL)

HE CAN'T BE A BEAR.....HE JUST CAN'T!!!! Thomas Jones or Pierre Thomas this week? :)

AJ Mass
  (11:40 AM)

Time will tell... I like a healthy Pierre, but since he's iffy and TJ is getting the goal-line looks, right now I lean his way.

Brian (Milwaukee)

I don't know if I trust rankings re: Colston this week. Do I bench him in favor of a Jennings, Burleson, Edwards trifecta.

AJ Mass
  (11:43 AM)

I'm a big Giants fan, and although I flip around, I watch them closest of all. The way to beat them this week is for the run to work... if Thomas was totally healthy, I'd run him to death. If not, then the Saints will likely go to business as usual - 40 passes, 10 to Colston, 5 he catches. I think that still puts him 4th of the four you mentioned.

Carl (Atlanta)

What is a PPR league? Point per Reception?

AJ Mass
  (11:43 AM)

Yes Carl, though it doesn't technically have to be "1 point" - it's a general term to cover leagues where there is some scoring awarded to catching passes.

Justin (LA)

AJ-Thanks for bringing sexy back! Who's sexier this week T. Jones or C. Portis?

AJ Mass
  (11:44 AM)

Portis. I have a feeling he's "motivated" his blockers plenty this week and will shine.

Jared (New Orleans)

Lance Moore or Jeremy Maclin? I need your opinion.

AJ Mass
  (11:45 AM)

While I do think Maclin's Week 5 was a bit fluky, he's going to get more looks than Moore. I go his way.

Scott (Austin)

What is your take on BJacobs the rest of the way? and rather him or Pierre the rest of the way?

AJ Mass
  (11:47 AM)

If the game is "necessary" Jacobs'll play. When it's not, he won't. The Giants want to keep him fresh for the playoffs... so let's say they are 10-2 at some point... Bradshaw will see more time. As such, I like Thomas better for the stretch drive.

Dan (Atlantic City)

What kind of trade value SHOULD Ricky Williams have in a 12-team PPR league ... I need a receiver. Ricky is 11th in RB scoring, but nobody sees him as a viable starter.

AJ Mass
  (11:49 AM)

Assuming he doesn't get hurt... the end of MNF raises some doubts going forward... I think Williams has flex play value and nothing more. He only has true value in the Wildcat formation, and the team can't run it all game long.

Jason (Sunnyvale)

AJ, should I take Project: "Shutdown No. 1" seriously and sit Andre Johnson against the Bengals? I have Mason ready and it's a PPR league. Thanks!

AJ Mass
  (11:50 AM)

No, because watching AJ last week against the Cards late, you were watching a man versus boys. Quadruple-teaming might not work at this point.

Jeremy Maclin (Philly)

AJ/JT, Who's a better flex start this week: Slaton, Driver, or Me?

AJ Mass
  (11:51 AM)

You have more upside. Driver is the more reliable option. Check your level of risk tolerance and choose accordingly.

Jon (KC)

Cutler or Romo the rest of the way? Does your opinion change if the T.O. trade rumors come true?

AJ Mass
  (11:53 AM)

No it doesn't. It's Cutler either way. The soft part of Dallas' schedule is over, save for a date with the Raiders.

Jamaal Charles (KC)

Lightning Round: Who do you cut? Me, F Jackson, D Brown, M Bell

AJ Mass
  (11:54 AM)

You. Though Fred's value certainly is slipping fast.

Mike (Newport Beach, CA)

Welker or Sims-Walker?

AJ Mass
  (11:54 AM)

Seth (Edmond, OK)

Should I drop Breaston for Either Jamaal Charles or Mike Bell to provide Depth?

AJ Mass
  (11:55 AM)

Depends on your depth at WR. I wouldn't for Charles, but for Bell I might. Probably better to trade him for a better quality RB though.

harry (NJ)

But, The Bengals have so far shut down beasts like Jennings and Marshall. What's so different about AJ?

AJ Mass
  (11:56 AM)

Watch the fourth quarter highlights against AZ.

Ryan (Denver)

Garrard or Ryan

AJ Mass
  (11:56 AM)

Nick (Cranford)

celeck or gates?

AJ Mass
  (11:56 AM)

Jermichael Finley (Green Bay)

Shockey or myself?

AJ Mass
  (11:57 AM)

Shockey against his former team.

Sam (Duluth)

Jennings/Edwards/Jackson/S.Mosspick 3

AJ Mass
  (11:57 AM)

Jackson sits (Vincent or DeSean)

Trade LT for SJax?

AJ Mass
  (11:57 AM)

Corey (D.C.)

Bert or Ernie?

AJ Mass
  (11:58 AM)

Bert. I need someone to clean the house.

Rick (Ohio)

Lynch or Sammy Morris?

AJ Mass
  (11:58 AM)

This week Sammy. Going forward, Marshawn.

Eric (MN)

mendenhall, jacobs, hightower...pick 2 in a ppr league

AJ Mass
  (11:58 AM)

Sitting Timmy.

Tina (Cloumubs, OH)

D. Brown or J. Harrsion long term.

AJ Mass
  (11:59 AM)

Brown. Just biding the time until Addai is surpassed.

Bob (Madison, WI)

Riggs or Murtaugh?

AJ Mass
  (11:59 AM)

I'm getting too old for this chat!

Bill (Boston)

Who's getting the boot tonight in Somoa?

AJ Mass
  (12:00 PM)

Whoever Russell says, that sneaky devil.

Jeff (IL)

Start two for wr 2 and 3: D. Avery, J. Maclin, D. Hester, and S. Holmes.

AJ Mass
  (12:00 PM)

Santonio for sure. Avery by a nose for 2.

AJ Mass
  (12:01 PM)

That's the buzzer, gang! Thanks to all for your q's. Far too many to get to, but there's always Twitter and you can find my Mass Confusion blog on the net. Until later, we'll see you the next time on Villa Alegre!
