Are you ready for the wild rumpus to begin?
Yes, I am. Should be a great weekend. That's why I'm jumping in and starting the chat early. Let's get it going.
A HISTOASRY QUESTION FOR PAT YASSINKAS AT 1.20PM WHOAMI I WAS QB AT OLEMISS 1968=1971 THEN A SAINT
I'll go out on a limb and say Archie Manning.
Pat I know you cover the whole NFC South now and don't have any favorites. But with you formerly covering the Panthers I feel that you are a little dissapointed in them. That may be why you are so negative towards them in your post about how each team is faring in the division. I know you still have a little love left for our Panthers right?
It's not about love or hate. It's about how the teams are doing. Panthers aren't exactly doing very well right now, so it's tough to heap praise on them and I wouldn't be doing my job if I did.
who do you think of josh johnson
Like some of the things I've seen from him. Got some physical talent and I love his moxie. Think he can be a very good backup in this league. Could be a good starter in time. But he's a bridge for Freeman right now. Freeman will take over at some point. Johnson will get his real shot if Freeman doesn't work out or when he moves on to another team.
Has the Bucs' game been blacked out?
No. It's supposed to be on tv.
Good Morning where I am at pat, Any truth to the trading of JP to NE?
Don't think so.
What is the deal with me? Is it the offensive line or am I just not preforming up to my potential?
I'd put it mostly on the o-line. You're the same guy you were last year.
Bears are down to their 3rd string MLB. Bad timing w/ Turner and Gonzalez.
It sure doesn't help the Bears.
With the season pretty much a wash, please realistically speaking, WHY is Tampa not playing Freeman? I know everybody says he isnt ready but come on he is our FUTURE...the future needs to start now.
Honestly, I think they want to wait until after New England game to play him. They don't want the Patriots to ruin him. They've got a bye the next week. My guess is you'll see him after that.
who do you think is the best DB on the tampa bay buccaneers?
Jackson right now. Talib can be very good in time.
Any news on Pierre's Hammy
Not 100 percent, but I think there's a good chance both he and Bell play this week and share carries.
Will Atlanta be able to run on the Bears without Mughelli?
It's going to be tough. Mughelli is a much bigger factor in that running game than a lot of people realize.
Pat, I think if the Saints can get the run game going early on and have the giants d-line on their heels a bit, brees ought to be able to pick apart the giants injured secondary. I also think players like reggie bush, shockey, and lance moore could have big games from short to medium routes because of the giants d-line aggressiveness. what's your take?
I'd say you've got a pretty good handle on that.
What do you expect from Pep Sunday?
Should have a chance at some sacks. Good chance Bucs will be playing from behind and be forced to throw.
Based on what I've seen from the Giant, I think the Saints can run on them. What do you think Pat?
Think so, too. And I think they'll try to establish the run pretty early. Think you'll see Thomas and Bell sharing carries and I like that combination.
Which is a bigger disappointment for the Buc's right now, their WR's or their DB's?
WRs, they put a ton of money into Clayton and Bryant.
Am I the only one who doesn't think Mark Dominic should be blamed for the Bucs bad start. In his first draft he landed Miller (already in DT rotation), Straughter (competent 3rd WR) and turned 2 picks into Winslow (now our best receiver). Plus Freeman. And every player he cut remains jobless except June and Galloway, neither of whom are lighting it up.
No, I'm with you on that. He's made some good moves and some bad ones and you've got to give it a little more time to really judge all his moves.
I hear that Cleveland may take a 3rd or 5th round pick for Brady Quinn. Should the Panthers try make that trade? Or wait and draft one of the QBs out of the next draft, which will be loaded with good QBs.
I think it makes sense to focus on the draft. Of course, there could be a new regime making that pick. And, right now, Panthers don't have a first rounder.
Two hustle plays for the Falcons last weekend really stood out to me, getting me back to cautious optimism. The first was the 90-yard TD catch and run from Roddy White. The only player to catch him wasn't a DB from the 49ers - it was Roddy's counterpart Michael Jenkins. The second was again from Roddy - catching up to Dre Bly on the interception. More impressive on that play, though, was the O-line not giving up on the play and recovering the fumble. Can they keep the hustle going even if they're down?
Hustle's never been an issue since Mike Smith got there. They play hard for him. I was especially impressed with Roddy running down Bly on the interception.
With the emergence of Kroy Biermann do you think that the move of Jamaal Anderson to Defensive Tackle will be a perminent one?
As permanent as can be. He now has to show he can play DT. He may still line up at end sometimes, but I think they want to give him a long look at DT.
If the Panthers get hot and go on a run and get to, say, 4-3, what are the chances that they can catch the Saints and Falcons??
Going to be tough to catch Saints and Falcons. But, with Tampa Bay and Buffalo, Panthers have a chance to get to 3-3. They'd be on a three-game winning streak and would have momentum and that makes anything possible. But they have to start playing better.
Does Darren Sharper get another pick off Eli this week?
Wouldn't bet against it. Sharper's on a roll.
Do you think that the Bucs are gonna get their chance to win this sunday? With Carolina's poor interior line and Faine coming back, I think we might sneak out with a win.
You've got a chance. This might be your best chance so far this season.
What do you think about the Bucs signing Shawne Merriman in FA and converting him to DE?? I think he could be another John Abraham type player in that position (similar size / skill set).
Bucs are pretty committed to going with young guys. That wouldn't fit the profile.
Vision: Play action, Drew Brees stepping up into the pocket, Osi flying past... tackling air... as The Meach pulls in a 60 yard bomb for a touchdown, embarrassing the Giants' pedestrian secondary. Do you think I should tell futures for a living?
Check back in next week and we'll see if you were right.
Why hasn't John Fox given Dan Connor a chance at SLB? He is cleary one of their 3 best backers and has experience at the position. Has Fox not seen the impact Maualuga has had for Cinci?
Fox is set in his ways and he likes to stick with veterans like Diggs. Not saying that's the right move, but that's the way it is. I'd love to see Connor starting.
yo pat, i'm i crazy for thinking tampa can beat carolina sunday? i mean, it's not like carolina's win over washington at home was all that impressive!
It's entirely possible.
What do you think of Jason Snelling? In the limited time I've seen him he seems to play well. DO you think we would see him lining up at fullback if Mughelli can't play? And if so do you see him getting some carries? I
I like Snelling and it seems like coaching staff is starting to trust him by giving him more playing time. If Ovie's out, I think you could see combo of Snelling and Haynes at FB. Haynes has had more practice time there, but Snelling can play FB. But I also think they'd like to keep him in rotation at tailback.
Pat you dont think reaching for Freeman in the first round and giving up a pick in next years draft to do so is a bad move when no one had him untill late 2nd early third round?
That's not true. Other teams had him rated in first round. I had one GM tell me his team had Freeman rated ahead of Sanchez and Stafford and that they would have taken Freeman with the first pick in the draft if they had it. Yes, the guy wasn't going to be ready from Day One, but he's got big-time potential.
I know Dwayne Jarrett has been a bust up to this point with the Panthers. Do you think his lack of production this year is a result of Delhomme and the o-line or can we finally give up on Jarrett?
Jarrett's followed nicely in the footsteps of Keary Colbert and Dwayne Jarrett. If he hasn't shown something by now, he's probably not going to.
How much does Faine coming back help the running game for the bucs
Faine helps a lot. There's a huge difference between him and Sean Mahan.
I love all these NFL chats, but can never think of an NFC South questions.
Well, give it some thought and hit me with one.
Hate to bother you with a FF question, but with Bell coming back would you play him over Larry Johnson against the Skins?
I'd play just about anybody over LJ right now and it pains me to say that about a former Penn State player.
Do you think Mike Peterson can maintain that energy and explosiveness in the Falcons D throughout the whole season and possibly into the playoffs?
Yep, he's a high-energy guy and he's out to prove Jack Del Rio wrong for giving up on him last year.
Pat i hope that GM is tested regularly for drugs!Freeman has Jamarcus Russell written all over him Big arm trouble reading defenses in college yes he can throw the ball thru a wall but he cant read coverages!
Could turn out that way. But why judge the guy before he's even played?
Without naming names, how many current coaches will NOT be in the same role this time next year? I say 1 for sure, possibly 2.
Just in the NFC South? Yeah, you're on the right track. Fox will go if he doesn't have a winning season. Morris gets more slack, but if they go 0-16 or 1-15 and show no promise, Bucs might have to make a move. Payton and Smith, obviously, are very safe.
Can you say Jarret is a truly a bust if they hardly run 3 receiver sets? Fox keeps the tight ends in the majority of the time.
If he can't beat out a 36-year-old guy who they wanted him to beat out, I think you can say he's a bust.
Pat, I'm responding to Rozz.J Russell is one of the worst picks of all time. He'll go down as a Ryan Leaf (at this rate he'll be worse). Freeman at least has a chance because y'alls organization is putting the tools around him (Bryant, Winslow, Cadillac) so that he will have the chance to succeed. Russell had zero chance.
Hey Pat, will the Saints/Giants game be a shootout or a battle or running games?
Popular thought might be shootout, but I've got a hunch this one could come down to the running games.
Was resigning Michael Clayton a bad move for the Bucs?
At this point, I think that's safe to say.
Someone had Freeman as the #1 QB? Pat... are you sure you wanna throw Matt Millen's or Al Davis' opinion out there to support Freeman?
It wasn't either of them. It was someone I think most of us usually respect.
Pat, Lets talk worse case scenario. Panthers take another two more steps backwards thanks to lame coaching the next two weeks and are 1-5....any chance you see them making a coaching move midseason? At least getting an interim guy to finish the season and remove Fox? Fox isn't a bad coach but he isn't exactly the type who is gonna win you games w/ great coaching and playcalling. He is more of a guy to right a sinking ship w/ his old school mentality. Carolina is stacked w/ talent and any coach who can't work around the few weaknesses simply isn't that good of a coach. A common theme under Foxy.
Interim coaches are almost never a good thing. The bottom really would have to fall out -- like 2-10 -- for Richardson to make a move in-season.
Hey Pat, do you think this years NFC Championship game could be an all NFC South game?
I'd be in favor of it.
post your question or commentKenny Moore is a rising star, why can the coaching staf in carolina see this? he even flashed in the preseason.
Real simple: Fox has a long history of not playing young WRs very much.
is the NFC South a two horse race and do you see both the saints and Falcons getting into the playoffs? And what will the record have to be to win the division and get a WC berth. Thanks Pat. I love the chat
I say they both get in and both have double-digit wins. I think you might see one of them win 12 or 13.
Will we see Tye Hill playing this week? Or will we have to wait another week or so?
From what I hear, you won't be seeing Hill anytime soon.
Will Deangelo Williams cross 1,000 yards this season?
He'll have to really pick it up going forward.
Who will be the kicker in New Orleans Carney or Hartley or both ?
Carney for right now, but that could change.
Everette Brown looked good against the Redskins. Do you think he will start to get more PT? If so do you think he can help our our struggling D-Line?
Yes, more playing time is coming for him and that can't hurt.
Would Carolina have taken Freeman?
Yep. Good question.
Hey pat, what are the chances that one of atlanta,s coaches leaves at the end of this season to take a head coaching job?
Chances get better with each win. Mularkey's the guy to keep an eye on. I think Brian VG could be a year or two away and Bill Musgrave will end up being a head coach at some point.
Heard any rumors about any trades going down in the NFC South before the deadline?
Not much. Trade deadline is kind of overrated -- it's not like baseball. But there's still a chance we could see a deal or two.
I don't get why the Falcons reached out for Tye Hill if he has so much trouble picking up the playbook.. Isn't that why St.Louis got rid of him?!
Well, I don't think they knew it, or accepted that, when they made the deal. But they're learning the hard way.
Why is Matt Ryan such a freakin' champion?!
He's got "it" or all the intangibles. He's only scratched the surface so far.
I know Antonio Bryant was franchised and I don't recall if he signed a long term deal which he wanted. With the problems in TB right now, especially at QB, do you see Bryant staying with the Bucs next year if he isn't signed to a long term deal?
He's still carrying franchise tag ($10 million). Unless his play picks up dramatically the rest of the way, I don't think he stays in Tampa.
How motivated do you think the Bucs are since the Panthers embarrassed them on Monday night last year and started their 9 game skid?? Will it ultimately have any effect on the game at all???
Not a big factor. Tampa Bay's had so many changes that a lot of guys don't even remember that game.
Any guesses for Carolina's next HC if Fox is let go?
Not Bill Cowher.
Do you really think that haynes is that big of a drop off from Mughelli as far as blocking? He was a beast at UGA and played pretty well for the steelers for a few years...or is he just best suited coming out of the backfield as a receiver?
Not saying Haynes is all that bad. I just think Mughelli is very good -- way better than he gets credit for.
If N.O. wins against N.Y. whats the first game they lose?
Week 7 next year.
No go on Hill... What about Moore or Owens?
Think Moore will be the first that you'll see much of. But it will be gradual.
Pat. my friend (a Falcons fan) argues the Saints still need a feature back to truly be a Super Bowl contender. I say with Payton's system, versatile backs are good enough and that a featured back would in some ways be wasted, since I don't think Payton wants any one back to get 25 carries a game. You agree.
In that system, they're just fine with what they've got in the backfield.
What happened to Ronde Barber's tackling?? It seems like every game now he turns into somebody's highlight reel with a stiff arm or breaks his ankles or jumps completely over him as he whiffs on a tackle...it is getting embarassing.
Don't say that in front of Ronde. He's more than a little sensitive to criticism these days. But, hey, you've got a very strong argument.
Best Offensive Lineman in the NFC South? Jahri Evans, Jordan Gross, Jeff Faine, Jammal Brown, Jeff Otah pick one. But bye the way in my opinion this O-Line would win at least 5 Superbowls in a row^^
Before the season, I would have said Gross. Right now, I'd go with Evans.
Do you see the Bucs upgrading the NT position in the off season to come?
Man, I sure hope so.
What are your impressions of Saints punter Morstead? Lot of controversy when the Saints used a draft pick for him?
Think he's kicked well enough to make most forget all that controversy.
Hey Pat tell the guys in IT that I'm not getting page updates like I should. Answers weren't popping up after questions.
Will do. Sorry about that.
hey pat, don't you think moose should retire at the end of the year...his age is really showing this year IMO.
Probably the right time.
hey pat, whats the status on Mughelli?
Didn't practice last two days. We'll get an update today around 4 p.m.
Harvey Dahl may be the best, and least known, OG in the South.
Evans is the best. But Dahl's pretty good and you have to like how he's so fiesty.
Thanks for posting my question about the feature back in Payton's offense; unfortunately there was no respnse.
We'll try again. They're just fine with the backfield they have. It's perfect for their system.
Pat, do you really think that the bucs could win under freeman and his inexperience.
It's not like they're winning with Johnson and all of his experience. I say give Freeman a couple more weeks and bring him on. Raheem has to do something to spark that team and create some hope for the future or else he might not have a future.
Jahri Evans and the dreaded "turf toe" I read about, is this serious? What's the impact Sunday? thanks.
If he were a RB or WR, I'd worry. But I think they can do some things to get it to where he can play and not be in pain.
I forgott Carl Nicks the super steel from last years draft hes pretty good to. Best Defensive Tackle in the Nfc south?! Sed Ellis?
Carl Nicks is coming on nicely and is very underrated. As far as DTs, I'd probably go Ellis. There's nobody in Carolina or Tampa. Atlanta's Babineaux is only other guy even in the discussion.
The secondary is brutal in Tampa Bay right now. Can you explain to me why Raheem Morris, who was supposedly an up-and-coming defensive backs coach, cannot get the Buccaneers to figure it out on defense?!?
Can't explain that one, either. Pretty amazing.
Can I get a question in?
Send it again. I don't see them all because they come in so fast.
Derrick Brooks? Any possibility maybe for the second half of the season for that good push?
If he hasn't signed by now, I don't think he will.
Seriously, Pat, you try throwing a strike in the World Series. I dare you.
Bob Stanley??? That's not even funny! I hold him more responsible for '86 than Buckner.
suh or mccoy to bring back luster of tampa haydays, will we see johnson in wildcat when freeman takes over
I think Johnson would be great in the wildcat.
Who am I and am I good?
All I know about you is you're fast and you played with Freeman at K State.
Next offseason lefty gets release/traded?
Leftwich? Yeah, he's got no future in Tampa.
Do you think Kyle Moore will get any PT this week?
Think he's still a week away.
Hey PatSo back to the Ronde issue, is it the system change or the lack of help that makes Rondes mistakes so glaring. One thing that seems to be missing is the cohesiveness of the defense. In their prime, the D seemed like 1 unit , now it seems like 11 people trying to figure out where to be.
Not sure Ronde was ever cut out for this system. And he's not getting any younger.
Do you think Darren Sharper will make the Pro Bowl.
Yep, at this point, he's an automatic.
tampa takes tebow in the second??
As a tight end or an H-back?
Shouldn't Carl Nicks be in OL discussion? He and Evans are best pair of guards--maybe in league--and Nicks may end up better than Evans. Your thoughts?
Yes on best pair of guards. Nicks is really coming on strong and still will get better.
Hey Pat. How much of an impact will Mike Bell be against the Giants Sunday?
My guess is he and Thomas split carries pretty evenly.
after seeing mack torched by maclin can he take over for barber or do we need to look in draft or big name FA
Look in the draft or FA. Couple more questions. I've got to get out of here before Bucky Dent's chat starts at 2 p.m.
Come on Pat, you said you think the Falcons are the best at making draft picks, but you can't help but be impressed with some of the late round draft picks or rookie free agent pickups by Sean Payton. (Colston, Nicks, Pierre Thomas just to name a few)
Don't forget Mickey Loomis in there, too. Yes, Saints have done real well on late picks. And I also think the Ellis pick from last year will look real good in time.
Anybody missing the Deuce?
thanks for your time ,you have a great army day sir
Thank you all for stopping by. Enjoyed it as always. We'll do it again next week. Far as I know right now, we'll be at the same time. But I'll let you know on the blog if there are any changes.
Yes. We will always miss Deuce. No matter how well Thomas plays, it's just one of those things.
Thanks, Richard for giving the point of view of many Saints fans. I'll sign off on this one. Thanks again.
