Let's get this rolling
Do you think the Cowboys can make the playoffs this year? The division title is either going to the Gaints or the Eagles.
I don't like their playoff chances at all. Honestly, despite winning and getting some huge catch and runs from Austin, I thought Dallas looked terrible at KC. They did finally get a lot of pressure on the QB, but that isn't all that astounding considering the opponent. Teams' playoff chances I like better in the NFC: NYG, Phil, Chi, GBay, Minny, NOrl, ATL, Sea, SF and Zona.
M-Dub, what up? Has the luster come off this Jets defense after last week? And are you officially off the bandwagon?
I am not off the band wagon. Shocked me though. Like Rex Ryan said in his presser, it looked like the D was unprepared for that MNF game-and specifically the wild cat...which Miami does run extremely well by the way.
What are your thoughts on Chad Henne? The Fins OL sure looked physical on MNF.
They should did. Very talented (& Expensive) OL. Coming together for sure. As for Henne, I like him. He does have a tendency to run hot and cold, but if Miami can run the ball and play decent D, he should progress well. These reps the rest of the year will be critical. Physically and mentally, I think he is there.
Are you expecting Brady Quinn to get traded? Does he become a career backup with occasional starts?
Getting out of Cleveland could do him (& anyone for that matter) a world of good...just ask Braylon. Not ready to bury Quinn yet. But, he might not be all that easy to trade right now. Makes a big buck I would assume...maybe a team like Carolina pulls the trigger on him. Still, what does that leave the Browns with? More holes.
With JaMarcus Russell looking more and more like a bust each week, do you see the Raiders going after a QB in the draft? Maybe McCoy, Bradford or Locker?
Certainly a possibility, but wow, that would be a TON of money and resources overall tied up in the QB position. Plus you start over. Still, it is pretty clear right now that Russell isn't good enough-not even close really.
How much longer until Buffalo pulls the plug on the Trent Edwards experiment? The Browns have seemed to already have given up on Brady Quinn and he had only a fraction of total starting time compared to Edwards.
As for Buffalo, are you really that enamored with Ryan Fitzpatrick to sit down Edwards? I am not at all. If you are, you may not have watched much of Cincy's O last season. It was difficult to watch. That being said, I would not have the slightest problem at all with drafting a QB in the first round coming up. Still, first you must hire the new coach and figure out exactly what type of scheme you want to run and what type of QB is needed. Get a plan.
Do you think the Broncos can win the AFC West? They don't seem to be the type of team this year to just fade away.
Excited to see them vs. SD, but yes, they have to be the pick right now to win the West. Very well coached on both sides of the ball. Balanced O. Developing repore with Marshall and now Royal (with cheese). Also, big fan of Moreno here and Denver might have the best OL in football. I keep expecting to see their DL get exposed though.
Is it bad that I'm already rooting for the Sam Bradford sweepstakes?
Gotta do what you gotta do.
What up Matt? I know the Falcons are tough, but I love my Bears this Sunday night. They have been tough against the run and we saw the difference between the Falcons when they can run (vs 49ers) and when they can't (Pats). Give me your thoughts. Thanks
Very true. This remains a run-first O and when they have success on the ground, they are lethal. But still, I contend that Ryan and the passing game can put enough points on the board to beat anyone. I smell a shootout actually. Cutler is gelling right now and looks great to me as well.
Are the Redskins the worst non-winless team in the NFL?
Possibly, but Cleveland did just get a win this past weekend, so they have my vote.
What are your thoughts on Percy Harvin in the NFL?
Love him. Just scratching the surface of what he is able to do. You must remember with Harvin, he really didn't play WR or even return kicks in college. It is all in front of him at those positions. Physical and explosive as they come. Should be dynamite out of the slot. Get the ball in his hands!
Yeah Bradford's gonna help that horrible offensive line!
They need OT help SO bad
Can 6-3 really be called a win? How about they un-lost?
I like that. That game put football back a few years. Painful. So, neither team could handle the somewhat harsh winds and elements, right? They play in frickin Cleveland and Buffalo! You need to account for these things. Just one of so many things that were horrific about that football game. Let's not mention it again.
What moves do you see KC making for next year? I know the O-line is not great but they also could you some help on defense.
I can't say that I am thrilled with any single position right now in KC for the long term. By the end of this season, you MUST know if Cassel is the guy or not, but right now, I see them needing two OLinenmen, a starting RB, a #2 WR, and maybe a TE on O. The D isn't much better.
How many current members of the Vikings do you see as potential hall of famers not named Brett? I count at least 3-4 with Peterson and Hutchinson with possibly Allen or K. Williams
Seems accurate. Obviously Favre is in on the first ballot. OLinemen need to play a long time-but Hutch has a great chance for that. If Kev Williams and Allen keep it up-sure. I love Peterson's chances as well. Honestly, I have actually compared him to Walter Payton and Jim Brown. I think he is the 2nd best player in the NFL right now behind P Manning.
Are you surprised Michael Vick has had such an uneventful year so far? It's obvious the Eagles don't need him.
They don't need him at all and he is obviously the 3rd best QB on that roster. But surprised? No-the guy was in jail for the last two years. But, in the end, it wouldn't shock me if Philly traded him for a decent draft pick (to Oakland?) and remember, they had nothing invested in him.
Who would be your early vote for the Offensive and Defensive Rookie of the Year?
It isn't very clear cut. I suppose Sanchez still is in the drivers seat, but Harvin has a chance for sure. Can't give it to him now, but Moreno will get into the discussion for sure. I guess either Laurinitis or Curry on D. No one has really stepped up on either side of the ball to me.
Best CB in the league right now: Champ? Revis? Winfield? Someone else?
Asomugha. I will take Revis 2nd and Champ 3rd. Love Winfield as well-vastly overlooked.
Does there seem to be more winless teams going into the sixth week than usual?l
Sure seems that way. Just some awful football teams too.
Do you think the Cowboys should seek a trade for Shawne Merriman to help free up ware
Doesn't sound possible really. Ware is about to be the highest paid D player in history and Merriman will want similiar money. Plus, they have first round $$$ in Spencer.
Seriously...what do the Raiders do? What kind of plan could they have now? I think if Garcia was playing the situation would be different but JaMarcus is being permanently damaged right now. They are hosed.
Surely will set back the franchise even further-for a long time. You can't take a QB that high and miss. Plus, they are the Raiders and have made plenty of other poor personnel decisions.
how good are the bengals
B ...pretty good! Really like the D. They are getting after the QB much better this year. Very well coached on that side of the ball. Stop the run real well. Lots of talented young high picks on that side of the ball. The key is their running game though. If they can run it-which they have consistently-they are very tough. It is very much a run-first O and Palmer is coming through in the clutch and keeping the chains moving. They are one play away from being undefeated.
What's going on in Tenn with Vince Young? Where do you see him in a few years?
I don't think he is very good or is an NFL starting QB. So...Oakland. But, Tenn has to see what they have in VY before this season ends. Then, when they know he isn't the answer (which I bet they already do), then you just cut him. Oh well.
The Steelers put Aaron Smith on IR. How does this affect them, and what do you think their plan will be to replace him? Ziggy Hood isn't ready yet, they're saying...
I wouldn't trust Hood in an everydown role, but he is talented and will get an opportunity to play quite a bit. I bet with mixed results. Kirshkie is a servicable player as well...but no where near A Smith, who is a true star in this league. This really hurts Pittsburgh in my opinion.
Are the Vikings good enough to beat the Ravens?
Sure. I see them as very close teams. Actually, right now, I see Minny as the better of the two. Is it just me, or is Balt's D not looking like Balt's D right now? Not nearly as aggressive. I (& maybe they don't either) trust their CBs.
Does Miles Austin's big game and Roy Williams lack of big a big game have their respective rolls switching with Miles becoming the number one?
I kinda doubt it, but it should go heavier to a 50/50 split in targets. Witten remains the #1 though and Crayton will see the field. But, it is telling that Romo targeted Austin 15 times last week, which is more than double the targets he has ever thrown to Williams from what I understand.
Matt what about maulaluga for rookie of the year, clearly the biggest impact on a defense this season.
Might be right about that one. I bet Curry wins that award when it is all said and done though. But a good call by you.
What is up with the Panthers this year???
They are not very good. The thing that shocks me about Carolina is that their OL is no longer dominating the LOS like it did last year-and it is the same group of guys. Everyone knew they were running it last year, but they couldn't stop it. This year, the run game is okay, but not dominant enough to hide all their other faults-and there are a lot of those.
Matt, how do you see the GMen/Saints game playing out this week? Will these two pretty good defense thus far be neutralized into a first to 40 points wins scenario or will there be some form of defense being played. Who do you see as the X-factor for each team (I'm going Reggie and Nicks)
Should be a great game. I don't expect it to be incredibly high scoring though. 21-20 G Men. I see NYG having more success on the ground than NO, even though I am quite high on Pierre T. X Factors...Nicks is a good one, but give me Bradshaw. As for NOrls...how about Shockey vs. his old team?
Do you see the Chargers making a move for DL or OL help? We're dying in the trenches!
SD is dying in the trenches. But, who is available right now? I do see AJ Smith attacking both lines in the off season though. No doubt.
Could Flacco end up being better than Ryan or is Flacco just on a better team right now?
Could happen. Both are excellent and I really like both for the long term. Not on all that much better of a team either. Wouldn't shock me if both QBs went to many Pro Bowls.
OK, all teams have played at least 4 games now. If you had to redo your picks for the SB, what would they be? I'm thinking Vikings over Indy. You?
Wow, I like Minny quite a bit, but would probably take the Giants in the NFC. In the AFC, Indy is a real good call. But, once Tom Brady starts looking like Tom Brady again, NEng could really rise up. Eli over Peyton.
Is Jacksonville going to lose this weekend to St. Louis? Honestly, they seem like they are equally un-talented teams....
Just how impressive is Ryan Clady's 21 games without a sack streak? Can you put it in perspective for me? What other tackle has been this successful right out the gate? And is he the best in the league
He is the best in the league and I said that after last season. Amazing stuff. Can't remember anyone being as dominant that quickly. Surely some of the all time greats were on par though.
3 young QBs might be able to revive their careers with a change of scenery. How about this 3-team trade: B Quinn to Arizona, M Leinart to Tennessee, and V. Young to Cleveland? Hard to tell with all the escalator clauses but should be roughly same money remaining on contracts.
If I were in Zona's shoes, I would just keep my guy! Can't I like it.
OK going to break from the Vikings questions for just one minute here. What happens if Tom Brady DOESN'T look like Tom Brady again, M-Dub? It can happen you know.
Oh, it sure can. Maybe never again. Pure speculation for sure. I bet deep down, he is pulling his hair out right now. Cool-as always-on the outside, but I bet it is painful for him to watch his own tape right now. Still, I am betting on that guy.
The Broncos still don't have the defense to stop the Chargers. Brady missed about 5 throws that would have gone for big gains or tds on Sunday. Once teams get more than a handful of tape on their new scheme, they will start giving up big chunks of yardage. Starting on MNF
Perhaps, but I don't think SD can stop Den's running game. Champ should do well on V-Jax, who is SD's best weapon. Can SD's OL control the LOS? Love Rivers and the SD passing attack though.
Is this a private chat with J.B. and your other friends?
No-come on in. Be careful with the snide comments though.
Can Seattle kep Hass upright against Zona?
I think so. Not overly impressed with Zona's individual pass rushers. Sea's passing attack is quite strong. Hass is playing well. Gets it out quick too.
Do you think the afc north is the hardest division for a running back to have success on the ground, and if so doesnt that make benson better than backs in other divisions
Sorta. His performance against Balt was fantastic. But that was one game. If he does that to Balt again and to PGH twice, then you might have something. The Browns obviously do not count.
Are you in the "Zorn and Campbell won't be in DC next year" camp? Shanahan probably coaching and draft a QB?
Hearing Gruden now and yes, with a new QB
You ready to allow Kyle Orton to officially enter your top 15 QBs in the league debate?
Not quite. Playing well for sure though. Still, very limited. Manager. Not turning it over though, which is huge.
Matty!!!!! Wednesday afternoon is right for chatting. Big news in Indy...Ed Johnson waived again. What happened? Huge, huge loss. DT is a thin position.
Honestly-first I heard that! Huge indeed. He must have been a bad boy. Big loss.
Do you see the Titans going elsewhere with their coaching situation after this year?
I wouldn't and no, I don't. Fisher has won a ton of games in this league and a ton of games just last year.
what division is the hardest in the nfc and afc and who is the best in those divisions
NFC East and NYG. AFC North and I still say Pittsburgh.
So is the Washington-KC matchup this weekend make Buff-Cleveland last weekend look like a shoot-out? I honestly could see that game ending a 0-0 tie.
I bet the first one to 10 wins it. Wash should be worried though.
Do you think T.O. will be traded
Sure makes sense to me. But, to whom? He is no where near the player that he once was, but obviously the Buff experiment didn't work out. But also remember, when he was released by Dallas, not all that many teams were beating down his door. Felt like to me that Buff needed him and he needed them and no one else wanted to take a chance on TO-for good reason.
Bengals fans fishing for someone to tell them their team's the best, awesome.
You saw through that too? He might be on to something however.
Anyway that Portis can be traded? Wash is going nowehere and why not trade him and get draft picks?
They should. Would be the best thing for the player and the team. They are running him into the ground. Another player who isn't what he once was. I bet Seattle would take him. Maybe GBay? Zona!
Who has the better chance of getting their first win this weekend? Kansas City or St. Louis?
Going with KC. Wash is down. Not well coached. KC just played Dallas quite tough.
How often do in-season trades involving big names happen? Stop it people!
Good point. Could be more this year than ever, but still, it isn't exactly the NHL or MLB trade deadline.
I'm not a linebacker. Please tell Greg Blache.
Hard to believe that he hasn't gotten that memo yet. Just rush the passer.
Matt, what's your best guess on what may happen with John David Booty? Could he become the QB of the future for the Vikings after Favre retires for good?
I really tend to doubt it. Asking an awful lot from a 5th rounder who really hasn't shown much on this level and has moderate physical skills.
I'm not a head coach. Please tell Dan Snyder.
The other thing that enough people don't talk about is that Zorn is also a first time play caller. Holmgren called the plays in Seattle. Just that one step up is a big deal and tough to do. Then you just throw all those Head Coaching duties/pressures on top of that. Not good business.
Do you really think GB would think it's worth marginally upgraded their RB group by parting with draft picks for Portis? Picks that need to be used to fix their O-line next year?
Probably not. RBs are easy to find. Can't come up with many teams that would be real interested to be in the Portis market.
Hey would you answer my question, is jay cutler going to the pro bowl this year
Sure-anything for you. I like his chances, but lets think it through a little. 3 will go. I like Eli's chances. McNabb has a shot. Favre will get consideration-even if he doesn't deserve it. Rodgers certainly has a shot. Gotta think Brees goes. Ryan has a shot. Maybe Warner or Hass-but I doubt it. I will go with Brees, Eli and Cutler...but just to make you happy.
I am currently a starting RT in the NFL. Please apologize to Redskins fans.
That OL is a nightmare right now. OLD. Big trouble!
When Anthony Gonzalex returns to the field, who do you think will be effected more, Garcon or Collie?
Probably Collie. I would have Gonzo in the slot with Wayne and Garcon on the outside. GREAT problem to have though!
Is Mangini beginning to look like a fool for sticking with Anderson while having Quinn on such a short leash?
Mangini has a major problem. Neither of the two QBs is good enough. You can handle the situation anyway you please, but that fact isn't changing in the near future.
I would make one heck of an offensive tackle
Not tough enough
Over/Under on Dumervil sacks this week 1 1/2?
That is probably a safe line for every week. But SD is going to throw a lot and I bet McNeil has a tough time getting low enough to handle Dumervil. OVER
Cutler ahead of Ryan? Did you watch #6 week 1? Embarassing. Can't believe you just said that.
I just said it to make him happy. Settle.
Do you think that Devin Hester is still worthy of 100 madden speed?
That doesn't mean anything to me, as I don't play video games...but Hester is awfully fast on a real football field with a ball in his hands.
What do you think about Gruden in Washington?
He will make a lot of money. Will need to rebuild the OL and find a QB-easier said than done.
Worst 1st pick overall. Carr, Couch, Smith or Russell? Thanks.
Gotta go with Russell right now. Looks terrible.
I think it you that said James Harrison is the most held man in the league...Amen brother! What can be done for the league to take notice? It's hardly ever called.
Happens very often. We are doing something right now for the league to take notice!
So whats your take on Lebron being the reason Braylon was sent out of town?
Not sure that is 100% fact Aaron
So, do you think that the Browns sent Edwards to NYC so that the Knicks would not get LeBron too?
Folks, I have to run. Let's do it again next Wednesday at noon. Great stuff and lots of fun. Adios.
