What's good, folks? Great to be back for another MMA Live chat here at espn.com! Already dozens of questions in the queue, so let's get going. I'm here until at least 2PM ET, so fire away!
Hey just wonderen what u think should b next for rich ace franklin should he hang it up if he cant compete for a belt in ether division
Rich still plans to fight for another year or two, and I still think there are some high-profile opponents out there for him. His days of fighting for UFC championships ended with the loss to Vitor Belfort.
now that king mo signed with strikeforce, do you think rampage will sign with them too?
No. Rampage will return to the UFC.
was henderson vs cerrone fight of the year so far? what about torres vs mizugaki..couture vs nog..diego vs guida
You've got most of the candidates listed there, Matt. I think Sanchez-Guida is still at the top of my list, with Henderson-Cerrone a close second.
What is your opinion of the Kikuno v. Alvarez announcement? I have heard people say Eddie will walk through him to Bellator II and I've heard that it could be a good fight. I guess I don't know too much about his opponent, so what are your impressions?
I don't know a ton about Kikuno, either. But his record and resume suggests that he is by no means a tomato can, and should be a nice challenge for Alvarez. Still expect Eddie to win, but this doesn't appear to be the 'safest' of opponents.
since randy couture wants interesting fights do u think a fight between him and rich franklin would be good??..that seems like a great fight to me
I would be interested in seeing that fight, yes.
Will the UFC open up the weight classes and add a 220 or 230 lb division. Also there are a great deal of fighters over the 265 HWT limit.... Do you see that ever getting raised especially if they add a 220 or 230? Thank you
I think the UFC will stay with its five divisions indefinitely. They don't want to have to pay seven champions, and cutting weight is a huge part of the sport. If you can cut a lot of weight, it's to your advantage. Lesnar is able to cut to 265, and deserves credit for being able to do so.
Hey Jon for the life of me I can't understand why Kimbo doesn't switch to pro boxing. He is far better suited to have some success in that field as his ground game is so bad.
No argument here.
Hey jon i like silva as fedor next victim what do u think
I assume you are talking about Antonio 'Big Foot' Silva. If so, I like that fight as well. Of course, both would have to win on November 7th. Big Foot will fight Fabricio Werdum.
Will Forrest Griffin run out of the cage after he loses to Tito?
He says that will be his signature departure after all of his losses going forward.
Ortiz Griffin II. How does this go down? Different than the first time? I really wonder if Griffin's heart is in fighting anymore.
The big variable is Ortiz's health. How is his back, and how has he recovered from what was a very invasive procedure? If Ortiz is clicking on all cylinders, I think it is his fight to lose. And I would agree that Griffin's heart may not be in it at this point.
My favourite time of the week!
Mine too, brotha.
So what are your thoughts on what should be worth more points: control, strikes, submissions?
It's a great question, Hondo, albeit one that doesn't have a great answer. Submission attempts are particularly difficult to quantify b/c you don't really know how close a given fighter might be to tapping out. I score fights on a number of factors.
Strikeforce card is actually looking pretty strong, does Sokoudjou have any chance to beat Mousasi?
The CBS card looks great. Sokoudjou has a very violent style, which could pose some problems for Mousasi. I expect Mousasi's versatility to prevail, but does Sokoudjou have a chance? Sure.
If the rumors are correct, would you take Kimbo or Houston Alexander?
I can hardly contain my enthusiasm. Really hard to gauge where Houston Alexander is right now. Don't tell me you're impressed by his win over Sherman Pendergarst. Forced to choose, I think he beats Kimbo. Just a more polished striker.
Seems like the UFC WW div is kinda hurting for contenders outside of Alves, Kos, n Fitch. Any shot that they make a run at Shields or Nick DIaz. Diaz is the one guy i think could give GSP the most trouble. Bienvenidos from Spain Jonny Boy!!
Strikeforce will make every effort to retain Shields and Nick Diaz, so I don't expect either to be in the UFC anytime soon. Welterweight contenders will eventually emerge.
Hey Jon...Were you able to control your excitement with the announcement of Jorge Santiago facing your boy Mamed Khalidov next month?
So fired up! Mamed Khalidov is one of the best Poland has to offer and very much deserves this opportunity. As most of you know, we've been giving him some love in this space for awhile. He can hang with the best middleweights in the world, and I really hope he beats Jorge Santiago. That would get him some much deserved press and hype, especially if he finishes him.
Jon, will we see GSP fight again before 2009 is over?
Nope. Early 2010.
The Simpsons satirize MMA, what did you think? I thought until the fight (which was intentionally over the top), they did a very good job of making fun of MMA, but I thought it was clear that the writers like it.
I haven't seen it yet, Brian. But another great example of MMA's exponential growth and appeal.
How close was Henderson's arm to being ripped out of its socket? I swear I was ready to throw up if it happened.
What poise and determination he showed. These fighters are highly skilled and trained to get out of those situations. Tremendous toughness, and I'm curious if there is any sort of injury. Henderson is scheduled to be on MMA Live tomorrow, and I'll be sure to ask him.
I was very excited to see that the UFC will be airing prelim fights for free on Spike again. Are you surprised that Okami is getting doubly disrespected - no spot on the main card and not even top two in the prelims?
Definitely surprised, Charlie. We will be posing that question to our analysts tomorrow on MMA Live.
YOUR ANSWERS AREN'T MATCHING THE QUESTIONS.
Shoney, it seems as though that has been a recurring problem with this new chat system. Not good. All I can do is keep posting the questions and answering them. Sorry.
Mr. Anik, Mir says he'd love a rubber match with Brock. Glutton for punishment?
Does he really? I think he wants the pay day, but I'm not sure he wants his face rearranged again.
How about Brock's trash talk leading up to his match with Carwin? Like it, love it, or not a fan?
Lesnar is a supremely confident athlete, and I have no problem with the pre-fight talk. He's gotta back it up, of course. But it just adds fuel to a fight that is already enormous.
What are your thoughts about King Mo signing with Strikeforce? Will he be exposed as a true talent or as mostly hype?
I definitely think King Mo is the real deal, and I'm not at all surprised he signed with Strikeforce. This affords him the opportunity to still be active in Japan, where he is a huge draw.
Is it just me or does it seem like DW can't stand doing TUF press with Roy Nelson? Makes me think that Roy made it to the finals and Dana doesn't want to have to promote him and his amazing belly.
Yeah, certainly no love lost between Dana White and Big Country. For the record, I wouldn't want to do media stuff with Nelson, either. Arrogant dude.
Carwin is giving it back to him.
Do you think the UFC has been losing steam since UFC 100?
It's an interesting question, Andrew. I said after UFC 100 'how can it get any bigger than this?' And it's irrefutable that there have been a few shallow cards since July, most notably UFC 103. But overall, I still think the UFC is on the incline.
Jonny! Will MMA Live be in Vegas for 106?
Can't always do 1.5 million PPV buys.
True. And you also see the UFC is going to great lengths to cater to the fans by offering up free prelims on Spike. That is quickly becoming a trend, and a welcome one.
Hope you guys are going to talk about Yushin Okami vs Chael Sonnen being on the undercard tomorrow during MMALive. Seems like a pretty big fight on a shallow card to be a prelim fight IMHOHi Snapple Cap, where are you?
Yes, Rachel. We will discuss the fact that the Okami-Sonnen fight will not be part of the free telecast on Spike.
Any idea when Nate Diaz fights again?
Not sure, Tyler. He wants a top 5 guy. Not sure he'll get one.
Have you had a chance to read Jake Rossens blog on the wear and tear on fighters? I know Junie was a loose cannon but you hate to see things like that happen.
Yes. Provocative entry from Jake once again. It's certainly a topic worth debating. And I do think the mental strain on fighters isn't talked about nearly enough. Talk about a profession consuming you, ya know? When I go to bed tonite, I may have some thoughts about my performance on MMA Live tomorrow, but it doesn't consume me. But imagine having a fight scheduled. You must think about your opponent constantly. There is no escaping it, and that has to be a huge mental grind.
Do you know if Cris Carter is an MMA fan?
I will ask him this weekend. I tend to doubt it.
What's up JA? I wasn't going to miss 2 weeks in a row. Anyway, read a rumor that Kimbo is scheduled to face Houston Alexander @ UFC 107 or the TUF finale, can't remember which. If true, I guess that means Ferguson will be cutting weight and will be able to showcase his new ATT skills.
Hey Jarrett. Good to have you back. The UFC recognizes that Kimbo's only chance at success is for him to fight fellow strikers. His ground game appears to have actually gotten worse over the past year. It will be interesting, regardless of when and who Kimbo fights, to see if the time at ATT has paid dividends.
If Kimbo v. Houston hits the mat, I will eat my hat.
Akiyama says he's fighting Wanderlei in February, possibly in Australia. I think that's a great first middleweight bout for The Axe Murderer, but what do you think Jon?
Huge fan of that rumored match-up. I still question whether or not Wanderlei will be able to suck down to 185.
The confusion for me on the Okami situation is - why does the UFC keep around a fighter that they are burying and refusing to promote despite winning in the octagon?
I can't answer that question. I may not be as high on Okami as some of you, but I can call a spade a spade. He deserves better. Now, watch him lose to Chael Sonnen and end this debate.
Buy or Sell: Ray Lewis trys his hand @ MMA after football?
Sell, although I'd pay to see it.
Jon, I know you hate giving picks early, but who do you like in the Ben Saunders-Marcus Davis on UFC 106?
Great fight on paper. I think Marcus Davis is starting to show some wear and tear. He's been competing in combat sports for a long time, and I lean towards the younger, fresher striker in this one. Official prediction later.
I'm fighting with one hand behind my back against Rogers! Don't miss it!
I suggest you use both hands, or you'll be twitching on the canvas.
Hey Jon, with the lightweight division pretty stacked right now, who gets a shot at the winner or Penn Sanchez?
It'll be one of the following names, in my opinion: Gray Maynard, Tyson Griffin, Clay Guida, or Kenny Florian. A lot depends on who wins, Penn or Sanchez.
Jon, are you stoked for the Super Six super-middleweight tourney?
Very much so, JP. Boxing got it right on this one.
Fedor doesnt twitch. His nerve endings simply synapse until he gets up, like the Terminator.
Hahahahaha. That's right. I forgot.
A lot of bad press about MMA in Australia. Mostly the the uninformed accusations of barbarism MMA had to deal with in the states a few years ago. Any chance it will take hold there the way it has here?
Unlikely that it will ever take hold as strongly as it has here in the States. But with time and education, I expect the situation to improve. As an aside, Bellator MW champion Hector Lombard met his wife while competing at the 2000 Olympic games in Sydney, and says it would be a dream to compete in MMA in Australia.
Kanye does'nt get banned from the VMAs, but I can't get on MMALive Chat anymore? Im just sayin'.
Keep firing 'em in. Must've missed it.
okay jon as a great analyst I want you to give me the reason why chuck got the boot last night?
Am I the only MMA fan who is thankful Liddell got the boot? I appreciated the comedic value, I guess. But they need to put an MMA fighter on that show that actually has a chance to win the damn thing.
He wasn't a very good dancer.
Clay Guida? The guy is 5-4 in the UFC and coming off a loss. He has 0 impressive wins and got destroyed his last fight (split decision or not, Sanchez beat him like a rented mule). How can his name be anywhere near the discussion of who should fight for the title?
Well, perhaps the UFC agrees with you. But if Diego beats BJ Penn and Guida beats Florian, you'd have some people calling for a Sanchez-Guida rematch. Plus, Clay is a billable commodity and always puts on exciting fights. As you know, those two factors count for something.
Watching Liddell on DWTS was sort of like watching Cro Cop against Dos Santos...very sad.
Watching Chuck that far out of his element felt vaguely like a visit to the zoo.
GSP has the moves to do well on Dancing With the Stars for sure.
GSP, Rashad Evans. There are dozens of fighters who would do well. The key is finding a guy with the skills but also the name recognition.
Jon Anik, next seasons winner of Dancing with the Stars!
Thanks for the love, man. But yeah, right. I just don't move the needle. The show's producers would be like 'Who?'.
Will Randy get a title shot if he beats Vera or will he need on emore win?
He could certainly get an immediate title shot by taking out Vera. I think they'd give him one more fight beforehand. But b/c of everything Couture brings to the table, the UFC might be compelled to strike while the iron is hot, especially is he finishes Vera. I think it'll end up being a moot point. I like Vera a lot in this spot.
Whats up Jon? Any news on Hendo's contract negotiations?
I don't believe anything has changed since we spoke last week.
Lets not for get the Spider. He performs a "ballet of Violence" in the cage already. All time great MMA analysis quote. Thanks Joe Rogan.
Absolutely. But one prerequisite for being on the show is speaking English. Anderson's English is much better than he lets on, but not good enough.
If Machida beats Shogun what's next for him?
Good question. I think it'll be Rampage, if he comes out of retirement. Or perhaps Randy Couture, as stated previously.
Does Ryan "Master" Bader continue to get brought along slowly or if he wins against Schafer will we get to see him fight someone relevant at 205?
I would say the latter. Injuries have slowed Bader's progression.
Any chance you could talk Rashad Evans into hosting one of the chats?
It's tough, b/c the chat is on Wednesday and he is traveling to Bristol as we speak for tomorrow's show. But perhaps we can do a special Thursday chat when Rashad is at ESPN. I'll try to set something up down the road. Good suggestion.
Can Rashad type fast enough to be on the chats?
I reckon I would be typing for Rashad. You guys are tough, especially when I'm slower than usual. :)
What % chance would you give of Mir v. Silva happening in 2010?
Both sides want the fight, although there are some variables. I'll say 55%.
After Mousasi sends Sokodjou to the hospital do you think he will set his sights on the octagon for some real competition?
It's no secret that Mousasi eventually sees himself in the UFC. But he is still very young; his skills make you think he is older. Strikeforce's signing of King Mo Lawal could help them retain Mousasi in the short term.
Would Rush Limbaugh have a chance sponsoring a fighter?
Solid, topical question. The answer is absolutely.
Gabe Gonzaga Vs. Junior dos Santos @ UFC 108. I like this fight, you like this fight?
I like Junior dos Santos against almost anyone right now.
DW says that Spider is not fighting at heavyweight and it takes a lot to change his mind.
I love Dana, but he's gone back on his word before and will again. A Mir-Silva fight could easily headline a PPV.
win or lose for Rashad does he get Rampage's first fight back after filming?
Hard to say, JZ. If Rashad loses to Thiago Silva, I wouldn't be surprised to see the UFC give Rampage a title shot opposite Machida (or Shogun, presumably). The Rashad-Rampage grudge match really can happen at anytime.
Being associated with M-1 seems like the kiss of death for participating in either the UFC or even getting match ups more interesting than a giant guy with a puncher's chance. Will this hurt Mousasi's future as a light heavyweight?
Fedor is really an M-1 promoter, in addition to being a fighter. Mousasi is not. I think Gegard is in control of his career, and will not be denied if and when he wants to take the plunge into the UFC.
Back to Guida getting a title shot. No LW wants to fight him in a five round fight. He's the only guy I know of that could go from being a dog to a favorite the more rounds you add. Nobody seems to be able to finish him and he just keeps going.
Totally agree, Matt. A lot of people are wondering why I left Frankie Edgar off of my short list of UFC LW contenders. I think the fact that the UFC is having him fight Kurt Pellegrino tells you they don't think Edgar is there just yet.
Great interview with Hendo last week. What is on tap for MMA live tomorrow?
Thanks, David. Wish we could've gotten a little bit more out of him, but I tried. Tomorrow, we've got both Rashad Evans and Florian in studio. We will interview Ben Henderson off the top, and also have Marcus Jones on to talk about tonite's episode of TUF.
If brandon beats randy I'd like to see him fight the rashad thiago winner would you wanna see that fight
Good call, John. I think a Rashad-Vera fight would be explosive.
Do you expect to see Roger Huerta sign with Bellator? I think it would be a great fit. Him vs Alvarez would be sick
Huerta would be the ideal guy for Bellator to build its second lightweight tournament around, and you can be sure there is interest. I think the UFC remains very high on Huerta, and will do everything in its power to retain him.
The whole Strikeforce/Dream partnership seems to be a great deal for the fighters who want to stay active and fight both in the US and Japan. Do you think the UFC's strict rules on their fighters might hurt them down the road if Strikeforce continues to be more flexible with their fighters? Not even to mention Strikeforce beats the UFC to a major network for a major card.
One of Strikeforce's biggest selling points for fighters is the non-exclusivity; the ability to fight for other promotions. I thought it a little strange, though, that Eddie Alvarez, Bellator's lightweight champion, was allowed to fight for DREAM. I guess that means the Strikeforce-DREAM partnership is not exclusive. Ultimately, the best fighters in the U.S. still want to fight for the UFC. They may lose an elite fighter or two (King Mo, Alvarez), but I don't think it's a huge factor overall.
JA- I'm missing class for this chat...and the fact that the weather sucks. MMA>Math
Glad to have you. I skipped class a lot at Gettysburg College. Just gotta know when to skip.
What do you make of the lack of Wes Sims on TUF? He seems like such a personality and we've seen next to nothing so far.
I think you'll see a lot of Sims when he gets ready for a fight, which could be as early as tonite. He certainly grabs your attention, for better or for worse.
JA! Any thoughts on Jordan Breen's take on the poor officiating of WEC 43, and State Athletic Commisions' inability to weed out poor referees and bring in new talent?
I have the piece printed out right in front of me, but haven't read it yet. I agree with Jordan most of the time, and expect this situation to be no different. Feel free to post that question to firstname.lastname@example.org.
How do I get my question posted?Whats the latest on Bobby Lashley vs. Ron Waterman? Are they going to be fighting on the November 7th Strikeforce card? Any chance the UFC picks up Lashley before then?
Still nothing definitive on that front. I think it makes sense for Lashley to continue to cut his teeth outside the UFC. It's a slam dunk that he will end up there at some point.
Are you going to address all the internet rumors that Brendan fights Kimbo at some point during the season?
I don't have any inside dirt. But as I've said all along, I don't believe we have seen the last of Kimbo on TUF. And I think, when/if Kimbo returns, he will do so in dramatic fashion with a KO victory.
Why is Fedor considered the No. 1 heavyweight in the world? He has fought NOBODY solid in two years. Arlovski and Sylvia are both hacks. When he fights the best, he"ll be the best.
I know you're a great MMA fan, Andrew. Go to sherdog.com and check out the body of work for Emelianenko. What bothers me about the anti-Fedor people is that if he beats Brett Rogers, everyone will conveniently say that Rogers is a nobody. In a lot of forums, Fedor just can't win, unless he beats Brock or fights in the UFC.
If someone credible leaked a TUF result to you, would you talk about it on the show? I know Sherdog has done it before, but the UFC was none to impressed.
Definitely would keep that information to myself.
Arlovski is no hack! He's coming off of a vicious KO on Bully Beatdown.
Jon, have you considered that Kimbo is doing all this press for TUF because he was awful all the way through, and is doing all this press because he needs to suck up to Dana White to get a fight or two in the UFC?
The UFC controls the P.R. machine, Brian. I think the UFC has a reason for putting Kimbo out there. I've been wrong before, but I think Slice has a seminal moment at some point soon.
Is Kenflo's training camp going to take place in Boston? Or Montreal? Or is he doing both?
Kenny will go back and forth, spending a lot of weeks with Firas Zahabi in Montreal, and then training with Keith Florian and others in Boston. Kenny will take his usual hiatus from MMA Live beginning in November in order to put all of his focus into the 6-week training camp.
Was never a big Rashad fan, but he is winning me over on TUF. While the opposite is happening with Rampage. He is only concerned with Kimbo, a guy with little chance to have success in MMA. I'll be rooting hard for Rashad when they finally meet. Although I still think Rampage wins that fight....
No doubt Rashad Evans has picked up a number of fans over the last few months. Despite some cocky moments in the Octagon, Rashad really is that genuine guy you see on TUF and MMA Live. He truly cares about the well-being and success of his fighters and has been an absolute pleasure to get to know on a personal level.
I too have pulled a complete 180 on Evans. Like him now.
BUY OR SELL? after Strikeforce puts all their money into building Fedor Dana lays down the ultimate contract for Lesnar vs Fedor?
Sell. Dana has already made an offer that was beyond lucrative, and Fedor didn't bite. Maybe he is ducking Brock Lesnar, and all the other big, young UFC heavyweights.
Worst TUF coach? Rampage or Shamrock?
Rampage is starting to put together quite a body of work in that regard.
Why does it surprise people that Rampage is not a good coach? It is not automatically true that because someone is talented that they can or even care to teach others.
Not sure we are surprised. Rather, I'm disappointed that he really doesn't seem to care, given how monumental the opportunity is for the fighters. These are life-changing moments for these guys, and the fighters on Team Rashad have a decided advantage.
Who is your pick in the Super 6? I got AA.
Hard to pick against Abraham, Ray. I agree.
Rampage could barely stay focused on his OWN training...let alone others'.
Do you see Faber ever getting his belt back?
I do, but I think he may have to get through Jose Aldo to do so. Faber was the one pushing the pace against MTB the last time out, despite having a broken hand. I wasn't the biggest Urijah fan in the world until that fight. Now, a huge supporter.
JA, what's on tap for MMA Live tomorrow? Would rather watch the show on the deuce than on my laptop, but beggars can't be choosers, right?
Hahaha. Thanks man. Rashad and Kenny in studio. Ben Henderson and Marcus Jones by phone.
Here I am talking about Gray Maynard again. I think he is deserving of getting dominated by Penn but does he face Tyson Griffin while waiting for Penn-Florian or do they keep him healthy?
I'd like to see the two Xtreme Couture guys, Maynard and Griffin, go at it. Perhaps if you made it a No. 1 contender's bout, they'd be into it.
Isn't a fight like A.Silva-Mir getting back to the "freakshow" type days of the UFC? We all know Silva has the skills, but the average fan will be thinking freakshow cause of the size of the fighters
That's a fair question. Anderson Silva isn't as small as you think, but Mir is a whole lot bigger than you may think. There would definitely be a size discrepancy, but I wouldn't consider it a freak show-type fight.
Frank Mir said that MTB vs. Aldo could be fight of the year. And I have to say I could not agree more. To me the one with the chin wins.
MTB definitely has the power, but I'm not sure anyone at 145 right now can handle the combination of speed and power that Aldo possesses. I've been hearing Mir and Bonnar wax poetic about Aldo for months now, well before he was on the radar.
How bout the two MMA for dummies coach TUF 11 Ken-flo v torres?
Torres wants to fight Kenny. But Florian is just too big. Sorry, Miguel.
Marcus Jones looks to have amazing power. Could this guy find a long term place in the UFC? He seems like he could create all sorts of problems for a lot of fighters.
I just don't know how long his body will hold up.
Frank Mir is 6'1" 240 lbs, that is the size of an NFL linebacker. I think people lose track of how big some of those HWs are because you see them in relation to each other.
It's a great point. Here's some perspective for you. Frank Mir fills up a doorway much more so than Bobby Lashley does. I've seen it with my own eyes here at ESPN. People think Lashley is huge. Mir is much bigger. I would also say that the size of guys like Mir and Lesnar in person is much different than on TV. Brock looks twice as big in person.
I thought Mir was 6'3"
Yeah, he ain't 6'1". 6'3" easily.
Guida/Florian is still not showing as confirmed. Is this on or not?
does Big Country walk right through TUF? do you see honestly anybody beating him?
I think there are 2-3 guys who can take out Big Country. I like Brendan Schaub and another guy whose name is escaping me.
Long time follower but never ask questions keep up the good work.
Thanks, Abraham. Appreciate the support man.
Mir lists himself as 6'1" on his own website.
And I list myself as 5'11" on mine. Mir is at least 6'2" with shoes off.
You are the coolest
My friends and family would vehemently disagree, but I'll take the compliment.
Do you think MMA will ever do like boxing and offer rebates on PPV's?? I know Tecate does that with a lot of boxing PPV..
Anything is possible. I don't see it happening anytime soon, but the idea has merit and it worked out for boxing/Tecate. Tecate is a great beer, for what it's worth.
buy or sell winner of Rashard v Thiago gets another shot at Machida?
Sell. Unless the UFC is really in a bind, I don't think either guy will get another title shot that quickly.
How were the onion rings?
Hahaha. For those that don't follow me on Twitter (Jon_Anik), I made homemade onion rings last week---baked and not fried for my fat a**. They were a 6 on a scale of 1-10. They were baked.
Would Zuffa ever buy an NFL team? or are they strictly focused on the UFC?
Interesting question. I think the Fertittas are doing just fine with this UFC investment.
Boston Sports Question:We're you bummed about the way the Sox went out?
Yeah, I think Papelbon may have thrown his last pitch for the Red Sox. Disappointing, for sure. Had they held that lead, who knows what would've happened. I really like the Yankees against the Angels.
If Vlad or Vitali Klitscko ever fought in the UFC do you think if they could defend the takedown they woud be just as dominant as they are in boxing? I mean they're reach would b very hard to get through
I like the way you think, Sal. They are such elite strikers with their hands and have tremendous size and skill. But defending a takedown is easier said than done. Ask Kimbo.
What happens to the HW division if Rothwell beats Cain? Assuming Lesnar beats Carwin, there is no clear #1 contender for quite a while.
Junior dos Santos comes to mind, provided he beats Gabe Gonzaga. Big Nog is out there as well. Not that I would necessarily want to see Nogueira face Lesnar or Carwin, but it's out there.
Why ask baseball questions on MMA CHAT??
We are 99% MMA, Alfonso. I'll take a few boxing and MLB/NFL/NBA questions every now and again. Hope you don't mind. Although, it seems like you do mind!
Is there a UFC Hall of Fame location? Or is it just an honor thing at this point until more are inducted?
No location for the UFC Hall of Fame. I wouldn't be surprised to see them build one someday. Doesn't have to be huge...just a place for UFC fans to go and learn about past champions and legends.
I'm going to be Jon Anik for Halloween!
Honored. You must really be fishing this year.
& why post that ? out of the 4-5 i submitted, lol
Bro, I get 10-20 questions per minute. Haven't seen any of your other questions.
why wouldnt you want to see Nog? wouldnt he be acandidate to beat lesnar givin his hard chin and great ground game?
I guess I just don't know what to make of him. What happened against Frank Mir? I just don't think we can expect consistent greatness out of Nogueira any longer. He certainly was sharp against Couture, but I don't think he can be sharp every time out. Too many wars.
whats the latest on f. shamrock, havent heard from him since he lost title in strikeforce
Shamrock could return before the end of the year, perhaps in a rematch with Nick Diaz. Maybe give him Scott Smith.
Any chance UFC 106 outdraws UFC 100?
UFC 100 got such a push from the mainstream media. Plus, it happened during the summer when nothing else was going on. With a full slate of college football and the NFL in season, I don't think UFC 106 outdraws 100. Still, I think 1,000,000 PPV buys is not out of the question whenever Lesnar is on a card.
Andrew is on fire. I say no but still over a million.
Nick Diaz made Shamrock look like a beginner, why would Strickeforce bring a major draw back to get embarresed again?
I agree. I would much sooner match Shamrock up with someone less versatile, such as Scott Smith.
Who do you like in the Patrick Barry vs. Antoni Hardonk free fight on Spike? Does Barry really hit as hard as they say?
Hardonk will forever be underrated. He always seems to beat the guys he should beat, and I like him to get it done in this spot.
any chance ESPN will have a daily MMA Podcast?
We are actively working on an MMA podcast. Can't promise that it will be a daily podcast, but we will have a podcast presence before the end of the year, and I'll be involved.
Obligatory MMA Live on TV anytime soon question
I hope so my friend. The fact that Fantasy Football Now, an ESPN Digital media production, is now on ESPN2 seems to be a step in the right direction.
Shields vs Miller - who ya got?
Official prediction to come next month. Actually thinking about a Mayhem upset.
buy or sell? aldo beats mtb. aldo vs. faber wins fight of the year.
Could be a case of Buy-Buy. I'll at least purchase the first part.
Over/Under on Rampage's next fight in the UFC? Over/Under on Rampage's next fight in the UFC? June, 2010June, 2010
Justin, you are just about right on the timeline, as I see it. I will say under. He'll fight prior to June of 2010.
Ben Askren is now 3-0 and fighting again in November. How long before we see him in the big show? Him vs Koscheck would be intriguing.
Askren is a prospect with a ton of momentum. By this time next year, he'll be in a big show.
Who else at ESPN is a fan of MMA? Is it gaining steam around the office? Getting some nice watercooler chatter maybe?
There are a lot of anchors who support MMA. Mike Hill, Stuart Scott...Doug Gottlieb from the ESPN Radio side is a big fan. I think for a lot of these guys, football dominates the discussion 6-7 months/year, and there are only so many hours in the day. I think, as ESPN continues to expand its MMA coverage, more of the anchors will get the bug that we all have.
How long until Tyron Woodley is given a big name to fight? He's been nothing but impressive. I think Strikeforce has a real star in the making
Totally agree on Woodley's star power. Can't give you a timeline, but I share your sentiments.
Who wins this seasons TUF? What is your prediction?
Before the season, I predicated Brendan Schaub. Gotta stay consistent, although I have my doubts.
Sorry I'm late! All is better after getting dumped last week. :)
Good to have you, Matt. It happens to the best of us, man. I promise you things are never as bad as they seem...or as good. Chin up...or down, if you're a fighter.
Kimbo has looked not good at all, do you think he fights again and wins???
He looks awful. No possible way to sugarcoat it. Against the right opponent, he could display that power. But his ground game is atrocious.
There are 18 different animal shapes in the Animal cracker zoo, you're welcome.
A late submission from the Snapple Cap. We...will...take it.
Dude...how on earth did that guy let Schaub anaconda him so easily? That was weak!
I think Rogers just gassed. He threw a ton of bombs early on and emptied the tank.
Todd Duffy. How good can he be? Guy looks like Mr. Universe out there.
We've got a small sample size with Duffee. But the MMA media (guys who I respect a ton) were all over him leading up to UFC 102. I think he's gonna be a name we talk about for quite some time.
Ya Schaub didn't look so hot and was lucky to catch him.
I agree, Nick. He showed toughness, but got hit with some good shots.
So if Kenflo would destroy you, would you fight mig torres after a year of training?
Torres would snap all of my limbs. I would fight a flyweight.
6 seconds and the guys a God.
...again, we haven't seen a lot of Todd Duffee. You're right, Brian. But leading up to that fight, all I heard about was Duffee's physique and power. And you can't help but be impressed with his size.
Anik over Torres via gogoplata.
I think it's crazy so many people are down on Brendan about not looking good. This is TUF they're not meant to be judged as pros just yet. Give the guys time, sheese Anyone recall what that wet behind the ear kid Kenflo looked like?
I just think Brendan is dealing with a different set of expectations b/c of the camp he trains with.
JA, not to jinx it, but you've already been on almost an hour over what you first committed to. Let's try to break the chat record here!
Thanks, VB. Not sure what our personal record is, but I've gotta bounce in about 10 minutes. One of these weeks, I vow to go 4 full hours until 5 PM ET.
Can anyone in MMA out-wrestle Brock Lesnar to keep the fight standing? That seems like the only way to beat him.
There is no one in the UFC's heavyweight division with better wrestling credentials than Brock Lesnar. I think the only way to beat him is to soften him up with strikes and then try to take him down and pound him out when he's weaker.
What is next for the Maine-i-ac? I doubt he'll see anymore $100,000 paydays after that KO loss to Ray Mercer
Do you care? What a joke his last fight was. He came in at 287.
When you go 4 full hours I am sure to get fired.
Haha. I appreciate that you guys appreciate the overtime. Believe me, I enjoy this part of my job more than most, except for the typing. If I didn't have a show to write, I would chat all day. I learn a lot from you guys.
Is the Light Heavyweight Division the most overrated in the sport? Not a lot of contenders right now.
I do think 205 is a tad overrated, Dustin. It has depth, but there is a dearth of contenders right now.
What's the best way to get a question in to McNeil? Hit up his twitter or email MMA Live?
Probably Twitter, or email@example.com. Any question directed to Franklin, I will forward his way.
My upset special for UFC 104 is Eric Schafer. I don't know why Bader is getting so much hype. All the TUF winners lose eventually.
Brian in DC is on the record. I am certainly higher on Bader than you are, but I don't see him as a future contender.
Do you think Dana will bring back any fighters w/ recent losses to Fedor? Seems like AA and TS pretty much sold out their UFC futures by fighting and losing to Fedor (not that their quick knockouts in their next fights did them any favors).
I just don't think either one of those guys has much upside right now.
Jon why does Cerrone keep getting robbed so much? He is becoming the next Winky Wright with the stick ups hes been through.
Admittedly, I scored the fight 48-47 for Cerrone. But Louie, to say he got robbed in this instance is overstating it, don't you think?
Is Hector Lombard still signed to Bellator? If not, what are the chances we see him in UFC?
Yes, Lombard has a long-term deal with Bellator and is its middleweight champion. Do I think he is someone the UFC would be interested in? Absolutely. Vicious power. He is MMA's version of Mike Tyson.
Why down on Bader? The injuries?
Not down on Bader, per se. I just have a hard time envisioning him as elite, alongside the likes of Lyoto Machida and Rashad Evans. He has a great chance to change my opinion at UFC 104.
Will Bellator be on anything other than ESPN Deportes? Don't have it right now on my package.
Bellator will be live in both English and Spanish for Season 2. An announcement is forthcoming soon.
So Lombard is crazy, unstable, and someone you can't stop watching?
Just do yourself a favor. If you've never seen Lombard fight, go to bellator.com and check out Bellator XII, his middleweight title fight is towards the end of the broadcast. Ridiculous.
I'm surprised it took so long for the Cerrone-Henderson decision to come up in the chat. Very close fight and boils down to how you scored round 1. I'm just surprised that all 3 judges had it the same.
Exactly, Chuck. Couldn't agree with you more. It came down to Round 1, and I was surprised the decision was unanimous.
What do you think is the best way to attack Machida? No one has quite figured out how.
Take him down, I guess. Get him into the latter rounds and test his cardio. Poison his food, maybe.
I like Eric Schaefer as well. he has a chance anytime he steps in the cage to sneak a submission out of you.
A lot of Schaefer momentum in the chat room.
how often do you use SpellCheck?
Not an option in the chat room, unfortunately. My younger brother Dave serves as my grammar/spelling police after the chat.
Stylistically isn't Varner a bad match for Henderson? I think it's fair to say Varner would have the edge in striking and wrestling
I hear ya, Tyler. But honestly, after what I saw this weekend, gimme Henderson. He'll find a way.
Can you give me a breakdown of Shogun? I haven't seen him much.
Extremely versatile- Accurate striker who's career has been plagued by injury. Has fought some of the best in the world---still young in terms of age, but not MMA mileage. When he's on, he's among the best in the world.
According to your post ten minutes ago... you're late. But it has been great reading your chat again this week. Keep up the good work Jon.
Thanks, RJ. With that, I must run. Thanks to all of you for hanging around for 2 hours . If I didn't get to your question, try me on Twitter (Jon_Anik) or at firstname.lastname@example.org. We'll see y'all tomorrow for MMA Live with Rashad Evans, Ken-Flo, and an interview with Ben Henderson. Until next week, be well and be safe. -JA
