Chat with Terry Blount

Terry Blount
  (2:08 PM)

Sorry I'm late guys. Was busy with a Hall of Fame story. I'll stay late today to make up for it.

terrylee vaughn (ware shoals,sc)

whos your top 5 at lowes saturday start with the winner

Terry Blount
  (2:08 PM)

You'd have to pick JJ No. 1. I'll go with Martin, Kahne, Montoya and Gordon after that.

Mojo (Houston)

Hamlin took himself out of the chase, do you think Montoya will do the same?

Terry Blount
  (2:09 PM)

No. I think JPM is on a roll and can hang in there, but he'll need to win a race or two to have a chance at winning the title.

Doug (Ohio)

With the exception of this past race, isn't NASCAR a little concerned with the boring races we have had to watch this season????

Terry Blount
  (2:10 PM)

They were concerned, which is what they went to the double-file restarts. It's made many races better at the end, including Fontana Sunday.

Doug (Little Rock)

If the 48 is so much better than the other cars what is the point of even racing?

Terry Blount
  (2:12 PM)

It's does get frustrating for the other competitors, but it isn't that the car is so much better. It's the entire team as a unit is outstanding and rarely makes a serous mistake. And whatever samll mistakes they do make, like in the pits Sunday, they keep their cool and overcome it. It also helps that Jimmie gets to race at some of his best tracks in the Chase.

Occupant (Planet Earth)

I realize this is an NHRA question but why not. A couple of weeks ago there was an article about Pro Stock driver starting his own in-house engine program. Sounds like he spent a lot of money on dyno, cnc equipment etc. Strange thing is he's using Pontiac Engines. I understand that the money he spent on equipment can be used on other manufacturer's engines, but why choose Pontiac, a company that will cease to exist in the not to distant future. Thanks and keep up the good work

Terry Blount
  (2:14 PM)

These GM engines parts are interchangeable. When Pontiac no longer exists, they'll just call it something else.

Mike (Detroit)

I've been reading a lot of negative columns over the last couple of days by writers in the media about Danica wanting to try her hand at Nascar, so Terry I ask you this, why are those in the racing media so quick to say she doesn't belong in Nascar, yet not one word is said about other guys who've been in the sport for awhile and haven't done much but keep getting rides (Casey Mears and Paul Menard, I'm looking you)?

Terry Blount
  (2:16 PM)

Mike, I agree. Danica deserves a shot like anyone else. Some people don't like it because she's a huge celebrity without winning regularly. A lot of drivers fall into that category. I think she'd be good for NASCAR because of all the attention she would bring.

Jay (Indy)

Who was that person in the media that asked Rick Hendrick about Danica after the race Sunday? Wrong time, wrong place, but I just hope Danica didn't see that and get the wrong impression about Hendrick based off that comment.

Terry Blount
  (2:17 PM)

It's a legitimate question for a guy who's driver may be involved in signing Danica. The reason it was asked in that setting is it was the only access journalists had to Rick over the weekend.

Teri (Los Angeles)

Do you think if Jr. streamlined his "outside" businesses, sold his bar, etc. he'd be able to focus and get better results on the track?

Terry Blount
  (2:19 PM)

No. Junior has lots of people who runs his businesses. He is 100 percent about racing when he's at the track and at the shop. Jimmie Johnson also has tons or outside interests, as does Jeff Gordon, and it doesn't hurt them.

Kate (SC)

Is Kyle using reserve drivers like Gilliand because he isn't interested in racing in meaningless races?

Terry Blount
  (2:20 PM)

Of course not. Kyle was very sick over the weekend. He did the right thing by getting out of the car and not risking an on-track mistake because of how he was feeling physically.

Sherrie (NC)

Terry, you never really say anything about Tony Stewart, do you not think he can win the championship this year?

Terry Blount
  (2:22 PM)

He's certainly capable as a driver and his team is top notch. But I wonder whether a Hendrick satellite operation can beat the Hendrick guys in the end.

Gigi (Arizona)

Who do you think will drive the #24 when Jeff Gordon retires? Maybe Kurt Busch?

Terry Blount
  (2:22 PM)

Way too far off to predict. Anynting could happen.

Doug (Ohio)

Wouldn't it be a better race for the chase if they added a road course and bristol to the chase races? I t would seem to add more diversity to the chase.

Terry Blount
  (2:23 PM)

You're preaching to the choir. I wrote that a few weeks ago.

Beth (Hazlet, NJ)

Hi Terry, you gotta admit Stewart's had some great luck in the Chase so far (like Fontana, Dover, New Hampshire), I wonder how good he could be if he wasn't getting involved in accidents, penalties, axle caps, etc. But, then again Johnson and Martin have been perfect. I guess Stewart's been fortunate with this Chase huh? He should be a lot further back in the standings that he is...

Terry Blount
  (2:24 PM)

Not furtunate. He's good enough and his team is good enough to make the most of difficult situations and not give up. And Stewart also is a Hendrick car.

Rick (Philadelphia, PA)

Seems like every week for the past 6 races, its all Hendrick all the time, with some Montoya and Stewart thrown in for variety... do you think this is good or bad for racing that 1 team can dominate the way Hendrick has? Reminds me of how unbeatable Schumacher and Ferrari used to be in F1.

Terry Blount
  (2:25 PM)

It's not good, but it is good to see JPM give them all they can handle. That's just a two-car operation with a merged team.

JR (KS)

Terry...I used to HATE Kurt Busch a few years ago but now I have grown to like him quite a bit and am pulling for him in this years chase....Do you think Its possible for Kyle to make over his image and reputation like Kurt did....or are they very different people and there is no way to tell?

Terry Blount
  (2:26 PM)

That's a good observation. Kyle will change as he gets older, but I do think Kyle is a little more volatile than Kurt.

devin (whitmore lake mi )

terry what the odd that chevy duse corvette for the few race when the nation wide duse cot

Terry Blount
  (2:28 PM)

No chance that I know of, but there's still talk they could change their mind and run the Camaro. All the NW cars will be announced in the next couple of weeks. The new Mustang is being unveiled today.

Matt (Chicago)

Do you actually consider NASCAR a sport?

Terry Blount
  (2:28 PM)

Yes I do. If you don't think so, get in one of these cars at Dega and see if you can drive it stead at 200 mph with other cars inches away.

Doug (Ohio)

Terry sorry about that question didn't see you had said that. Jeff Burton, is he safe at RCR?

Terry Blount
  (2:29 PM)

Yes. No worries there.

Taylor (GA)

Do you think Henrick will fire Lance and get Dale another crew chief and would it make any difference?

Terry Blount
  (2:30 PM)

I think Lance is staying. I don't think another change at ths point is a good idea.

Mike Mitchell (Jacksonville Fl)

Terry any inside info on possible sponsors for Kelly Bires at JRm next year?

Terry Blount
  (2:31 PM)

I think they are more concerned with trying to sign Danica at the moment.

Darin (STL)

In your opinion who are the five best crew chiefs not named Knaus?

Terry Blount
  (2:34 PM)

I mlike this question.1) Bob Osborne2) Pat Tryson3) Alan Gustafson4) Kenny Francis5) Brian Pattie

Chris (Crestview, FL)

Terry, love the chat sessions. It seems like the 88 team is turning the corner, if it weren't for some bad luck at a couple tracks, they would have something to show for it. Do you agree?

Terry Blount
  (2:35 PM)

I do. They've run up front a lot lately. But I've never seen a team as snakebit as this one. You have to think some of the awful luck would balance out down the stretch.

Irv (New York)

What does Nascar expect to find by confiscating the #48 and #5 for three straight weeks?

Terry Blount
  (2:37 PM)

It's looks like they're piling on and picking on those guys. But NASCAR officials may have decided to take back the cars first and second in points every week of the Chase.

douglas craig (missouri)

who do u think is going to the superbowl this year?

Terry Blount
  (2:38 PM)

Not a race question, but I'll go with Indianapolis and New York for the battle of the Mannings.

Darin (STL)

I like your answer with Bob Osborne. I wish the 99 would have lived up to all the hype they were supposed too. What do you believe is the quick answer as to why they have faltered this year?

Terry Blount
  (2:40 PM)

They were slightly down on HP and never switched to the new Ford engine as expected. There are other reasons, but that's the quick one.

Billy (Birmingham)

It's just a matter of time before JPM wins this year. Where do you see that happening? I expect the 42 to be scary fast this week at Charlotte.

Terry Blount
  (2:41 PM)

I'll pick him to win at Texas.

Patrick (Kentucky)

Real quick who is your first 5 in the hall?

Terry Blount
  (2:43 PM)

My column on this will be posted soon, but here's my 5: Bill France Sr., Richard Petty, Dale Earnhardt, Cale Yarborough and David Pearson.

Mark (Mount Airy,MD)

Hey Terry, how many of the 12 Chase drivers do you feel have a shot at the title after 4 races??????

Terry Blount
  (2:44 PM)

Only the top six now, and two of those_ Gordon and Busch _ are longshots. All of them need something unexpected to happen to Jimmie and Mark, like a blown engine or a Dega wreck.

Rich (Buffalo)

I think JPM wins at Talladega, I'll be curious to see how the 5 and 48 fare at that place since neither driver likes that track.

Terry Blount
  (2:45 PM)

Both JJ and Mark have won at Dega. None of the drivers like it, but that doesn't mean they can't win it.

Billy (Birmingham)

Is anyone in the garage or media that surprised by JPM's success or did everyone realize his talent when he came to NASCAR?

Terry Blount
  (2:47 PM)

Most people realized how much talent he had, but most also were skeptical because so few open wheelers have made the transition successfully. And he also wasn't in the best equipment. But the third year has been the charm for JPM.

BOB (NY)

terry, any chance ritchie evans gets in the hof this time?

Terry Blount
  (2:48 PM)

Anyone of the 25 nominees list has a chance, but I would be hugely surprised if he made it on the first five.

Mark (Mount Airy,MD)

Terry, David Ragan had a much better showing this past week than most of the season. Was he running the new Ford engine?????

Terry Blount
  (2:49 PM)

No, but he probably will run it before the end of the season.

dz (phx, az)

hey terry, so do you drive a chevy, ford or dodge?

Terry Blount
  (2:51 PM)

None of the above, but I've cars by all those makers over the years. My father worked for an Oldsmobile dealership.

Erik (Austin)

Since GM sells more cars in China than the US do you think Nascar will have a race in China?

Terry Blount
  (2:52 PM)

No. It's just too expensive adn transport all the cars and equipment over there. It's possible they would do an exhibition race at some point.

Panama Jay (Huntsville Al,)

Hi Terry, what do you think about the Logano's and Biffle Feud, dont you think Joey is old enough to speak for himself?

Terry Blount
  (2:53 PM)

Joey did speak for himself. He just didn't go to Biff's team after the race.

dps (sa, tx)

Is Ford making a Mistake not getting the new engine out sooner? Seems like next year they will be starting with a limited tested engine.

Terry Blount
  (2:55 PM)

They wil test the engine down th stretch this year and they still have high hopes for it. I know George Gillet said he can't wait to get the new Ford engine in the RPM cars, something that also could happen before the end of his year.

Patrick (Kentucky)

Any predictions on Keselowski next year?

Terry Blount
  (2:55 PM)

I expect Brad to have a solid season, but I don't see him making the Chase in his first full year of Cup racing.

Steve (Huntersville)

48 cars are coming to Charlotte. I hate to say it but a Start-N-Park could screw up Gilliland or Keselowski if they slip. Nemechek, great guy, had that great qual run last week and parked after 29 laps. I know it is preaching to the choir but NASCAR needs to stop makiong it profittable to do Start-N-Park.

Terry Blount
  (2:58 PM)

I hear ya, but it's a tough thing to police. I wish they would do away with the top 35 rule and make everyone qualify on speed.

Larry (PA)

Do you think Kyle will be using Gilliand again this weekend?

Terry Blount
  (2:59 PM)

I think Kyle will be fine this wekeend.

Jen (Ohio)

Couldn't believe Dale is 35 years old. Has Dale missed his window of opportunity?

Terry Blount
  (3:00 PM)

Some people think so, but Mark Martin is proving this year it's never too late to make a title run.

dz (phx, az)

terry, what is one change that you would make to the COT?

Terry Blount
  (3:00 PM)

Add more front downforce with some type of chgange to the splitter.

Greg (Minnesota)

Hey Terry, doesn't changing the resrictor plates to lower speed actually bunch the cars up further causing more opportunity for injury recks?

Terry Blount
  (3:02 PM)

That's a great point. Yes it does. However, if the speeds are slower, there's less chance of a car getting airborne and slamming into the catch fence, which endangers fans. That's what NASCASR wants to avoid.

Panama Jay (Huntsville Al,)

Why Jeff Gordon doesnt drive the 48 car that he owns at hendrick?

Terry Blount
  (3:03 PM)

He's the only in name, but Rick Hndrick is calling the shots.

Mike (CT)

It's been said that all the drivers respect Mark Martin. So...who is the one driver that none of them respect?

Terry Blount
  (3:04 PM)

There isn't a driver no one respects. If there were, he wouldn't be driving in Cup.

jim (sarasota)

Thanks for taking my question Terry. How is Mark Martin's son progressing and do you see him in Nascar in the near future?

Terry Blount
  (3:05 PM)

Matt has stopped racing for now. It was one of the reasons Mark decided to come back and drive full time.

Peter (Virginia)

Any word on Henrick putting Skinner in the 88 for the rest of the season so they can figure out if the problem is the car or Dale?

Terry Blount
  (3:06 PM)

Absolutely no chance of that happening.

Teri (Burbank)

Do you think Matt Kenseth will make the chase next year?

Terry Blount
  (3:06 PM)

I would be surprised if he didn't make the Chase next year.

Sherrie (NC)

Terry, I am finding that the truck series has become much more exciting, don't you think that Nascar should shorten the Sprint Cup schedule? Maybe the fan base would pick up once again if the season wasn't so long..

Terry Blount
  (3:09 PM)

I think four fewer races would help, and making the races shorter would help. It's possible a few races will decrease the distance, but the sked won't get shorter. No track wants to give up a Cup date. They all make money.

Patrick (Kentucky)

If NASCAR has no intentions of going to the bigger tires like Rousch said why even test them?

Terry Blount
  (3:11 PM)

None of that has been decided, but Goodyear can learn things to help the current tire by input they receive off the larger tire.

Terry Blount
  (3:12 PM)

Gotta run folks. Lots of good questions today. Have a great week. I'm out. Peace.
