Fantasy Sports w/Eric Karabell

Eric Karabell
  (3:01 PM)

Hello all and welcome to another fantasy sports chat session. Football is the big story today, as we head into Week 7 ... let's get going... any questions?

DC (NC)

Need you opinion on a couple of potential trades that we are evaluating. 10 team non PPR. Big Ben & TO for LT

Eric Karabell
  (3:02 PM)

Well, I don't think Terrell Owens has very much value. I don't regard him as a buy low. Roethlisberger has been great; that said, if you have another good QB, sure. Tomlinson is a buy low option. My blog about him Monday said I consider him more of a RB2 than guaranteed stud.

Tony G (San Jose Ca)

Love the rankings trust you the most, but the Forte call has me worried! I have him plus Slaton and Benson and was thinking of benching him due to his horrible performance last week. I don't think Cin D will be as tough without the DEnd or as Atlanta last week. Are you worried about Chi D shutting down Benson at all? Also, will the 49ers stop Schuab?

Eric Karabell
  (3:04 PM)

My Forte rank does seem out of place, but I really don't think Slaton is all that different. It's a tossup on those two. I still think Forte can be valuable obviously. I am not at all worried about Benson playing his former team. And Schaub cannot be stopped. He's a machine.

Steve (NY)

Eric, nice to have you chatting with us! You are MUCH higher on Caddy than anyone else. Not scared off by a huge Patriots lead and a reduced role?

Eric Karabell
  (3:05 PM)

I noticed that. Wow, you guys are perceptive when it comes to the rankings. I like the way Cadillac Williams has been playing, and I don't want to assume that every Patriots game from here on out is 45-0 at the half. I think the Buccaneers can establish some sense of the running game, and with Derrick Ward pretty much out of the picture, I could see Caddy getting 75 yards and a score.

Colt (SD)

Would you offer Mendenhall for Forte? Forte has looked brutal and Ron Turner is a terrible coordinator, but he is the only RB Chicago has and from the looks of it they will be playing everyone through week 17.

Eric Karabell
  (3:06 PM)

People are way too excited about Mendenhall. No, I want Forte, easily. Look at Pittsburgh's schedule when Mendenhall was going off.. Parker would have had fun, too. I am still buying low on Forte.

Andy (Phoenix)

Hi Eric, good to type to you. How's your day going?

Eric Karabell
  (3:07 PM)

Thank you for asking, Andy. I am well. Just doing my job and as always, staying outta trouble!

Eric (Oak Ridge, NJ)

Hey Eric! Can we get a Fantasy Hoops Question? I have a draft tonight, 10 Team, Head to Head Each Category Scoring, but with a 9th category of offensive rebounds. How drastically would that extra category swing your rankings towards big men? Thanks.

Eric Karabell
  (3:08 PM)

Wow, I have not heard of that category before. So rebounds and offensive rebounds? Wow. Obviously I would take a closer look at those who hit the offensive glass, like Okafor, Millsap and of course, Dwight Howard is even more a monster. But there are still 8 other categories...like free throw.

Dan (Boston)

does ahman green have any value now that he is back?

Eric Karabell
  (3:09 PM)

I don't think so. Even if Ryan Grant were to get hurt, and there's no indication that will happen, this seems like a move for depth. Fantasy owners need not deal with it.

Brandon (Compton)

Do you know the status of Anquan Boldin?

Eric Karabell
  (3:10 PM)

I ranked him in my top-20, so I believe he will play and play well. But no, as of Wednesday, it's tough to tell.

Dwight Howard (Orlando)

in a H2H league with standard cats, am I worth the 7th overall pick?

Eric Karabell
  (3:11 PM)

I will not select Howard in a roto league. I don't punt categories in October. In a h2h format, if I just need to win the week, Howard is better than the seventh pick.

Pete (Boston)

Eric,Granted it was against his former team (so he was likely extra "pumped"), but Jeremy Shockey had a very respectable game for the Saints. With such a potent passing attack, especially in the dome, is Shockey finally worth a start each week? Or does Drew Brees spread the ball around too much to make him a consistent contributor?

Eric Karabell
  (3:12 PM)

It always depends on who you've got. I ranked Shockey as a top-10 TE for this week, so I think he's worth starting, but if you have Tony Gonzalez, I trade Shockey before he plays again. I don't really trust him. Part of it is the Saints great depth, but also it's Shockey.

Jones (Miami, FL)

Hey Eric, D question. Should I drop Ravens D for Carolina, or just go without a D this week? I like Ravens Schedule after the Bye.Thanks

Eric Karabell
  (3:13 PM)

Interesting. I have done that before, leavin a bye week defense - or TE - active because I didn't have room to sign another, and really liked the options. Not sure the Ravens deserve that treatment, but certainly the Panthers are not a coveted D. If you can't make room, then I can see it.

J Krev (Milwaukee, WI)

Greatest value the rest of the year: Choice, Hightower, or Fargas? I don't need the depth, just looking for value to stash.

Eric Karabell
  (3:15 PM)

Let's get some more questions like these! I mean, everyone can see my rankings, and those of my colleagues... so asking about one guy over the other... just check there! On this question, I think it's Hightower. I don't think much of Fargas, though he did run well on Philly, and no matter what Jerry Jones spouts, Choice is going to be No. 3 on his own team at RB when King Felix Jones is healthy...

Josh (Atlanta)

Any chance Bradshaw takes the starting position from Jacobs later this year?

Eric Karabell
  (3:17 PM)

Always a chance, but I think Jacobs' demise has been exaggerated. I still think he's going to be just fine when the team's schedule gets easier. It doesn't really for the run game this week, but give it time.

Brian (massachusetts)

thoughts on beanie wells later in the year? i've heard that he might get the starting job eventually this year.

Eric Karabell
  (3:17 PM)

He might, but does it really matter? The Cardinals throw so much, I think it would be tough for any of their running backs, even if they play really well, to put up big numbers. I don't think the Cardinals know if Wells will emerge. He's got eight fantasy points in five games, but it's early.

Griffin (Montreal)

Should I start Crabtree over Santana Moss this week?

Eric Karabell
  (3:18 PM)

I barely ranked Crabtree, because he's not only a rookie, but this is his very first game. Moss is safer, much safer. I'm not saying Crabtree can't do anything spectacular, but I don't expect it so soon.

Mike (Chicago)

Eric, given they're approximately equally productive (J Stewart and Ocho, for example) do you generally prefer to play RBs over WRs at flex?

Eric Karabell
  (3:20 PM)

Generally I want the best option, but I do think it's only natural to look at the RB over the WR because they generally touch the ball more. But I still look closer to see ... in this case I would think I'd choose Stewart, but we'll see when the flex rankings come out.

Phil (Anaheim Hills)

EK!! you elitist Insider! Thanks for helping us common folk! What do you see T. Jones' trade value right now? I have offers for Marshall and Driver. Which one, if any, should I take? Thanks

Eric Karabell
  (3:21 PM)

Ha! But you know I don't make those calls. I just talk and write. I like Jones probably more than most, and would likely stick with him if the best offers are for those WRs separately. If you have to move him or have depth, I think I'd go with Driver.

Raul (New Orleans)

Hey Eric, you always come through in the clutch for me and because of that I am posting a 5-1 record. Quick question. Is it time to drop cotchery? 10 team ppr league.

Eric Karabell
  (3:21 PM)

No, I would not cut him. He was hurt. And he'll be just fine alongside Braylon Edwards. Cotchery's stock has plummeted but for the wrong reasons.

Lon (Dallas)

What's up with Kevin Walter? Is he not getting open or does Matt just have better options to throw to? When should he be dropped?

Eric Karabell
  (3:24 PM)

Well, he's obviously not performing very well of late, with 9 fantasy points in three weeks, but I'd try to keep him around. Andre Johnson is just so good there hasn't been much reason for Schaub to look at Walter. That could change though.

Kevin (Glen Rock, NJ)

Is Ray Rice now the main back in Baltimore? If so, do you see him as a 'Westbrook' type back the rest of the season. RB#1 worthy? Thanks.

Eric Karabell
  (3:25 PM)

Yeah, not a bad comparison. Rice looks terrific and he's got the job. I guess that makes McGahee into what Correll Buckhalter was for years! Rice is really that good.

Norm (Boston)

Who do you like as a ww pick up? Hester, Moore, or Nicks. Would you play any of them over Pierre Thomas at flex?

Eric Karabell
  (3:26 PM)

I like Moore the most, but I don't think he will rank better in the flex rankings. Thomas is still pretty good.

Travis (Nashville)

Why is Vernon Davis so low in the rankings this week?

Eric Karabell
  (3:27 PM)

The tight end position is very deep, and frankly he doesn't make the cut. There are easily 10 players there I would prefer. Davis had one great game, that's it.

Johnny (NYC)

Over/Under 6 S-Jax TDs this season?

Eric Karabell
  (3:28 PM)

Great question. At this point wouldn't we have to take the under on that? I mean, Jackson might get the yards we all thought he would, but he's not scoring, and not getting particularly close to scoring. Remember that season Tiki Barber ran well, got the yards and just couldn't score? That might be Jackson...

MW (Tampa)

I know you have Cadillac higher than Jamal L. on your rankings but considering the latest news out of cleveland about Harrison having the flu....Do you like Jamal over Caddy?

Eric Karabell
  (3:30 PM)

Everyone is trying to convince me the Patriots will lay a 50-0 score on the Buccaneers, and Caddy will do nothing... but I do want to remind people Chris Johnson topped 100 yards in that 59-zip game. Cadillac isn't as good, but Derrick Ward is out of the picture.

Raymond (San Francisco State (in between classes))

Hey EK man my team is struggling but I still have hope this week. With Boldin unclear should I throw Manningham or Hester out there for a WR2 in a PPR league?

Eric Karabell
  (3:31 PM)

I would go Manningham over Hester. Good matchup for Eli Manning to make numerous wide receivers relevant. As for Boldin, if he plays he's a good play.

Marshall (Witsberger)

I just got offered Slaton for Ray Rice, who would you rather have for the rest of the year?

Eric Karabell
  (3:32 PM)

Colleague Chris Harris had in his rotowski column Rice ranked over Slaton, which only helped confirm my feeling on this. Not that Slaton is bad... but Rice has become a monster.

Matt (Atlanta)

You said Manning might be able to make "numerous receivers" relevant. How relevant would Hakeem Nicks be in that mix this week? Better flex play than Andre Caldwell?

Eric Karabell
  (3:34 PM)

I ranked Caldwell better than Nicks, but was the only one who did so. I think both are decent flex plays really. Manningham's status also affects Nicks quite a bit.

Bryan (MA)

do you guys do any end of the year rankings? I know Harris does his weekly, but what about the other analysts?

Eric Karabell
  (3:34 PM)

Just him.. .but they are good.

Heartbroken in the Nation's Capital (Redskin-town)

We're awful! Anyhow, is it just me, or is Larry Johnson a really good play this week? He seems to have broken through against my Skins (crud), and he plays a pathetic run D in the Chargers.

Eric Karabell
  (3:37 PM)

I wanted to rank Johnson a bit better than I normally do, knowing the matchup was nice... but I couldn't. He's been bad this season. Bad backs even in good matchups don't always come through.

JoLiEt JaKE (Joliet, IL)

After last weeks throwdown, over/under Brady for 40 TDs?

Eric Karabell
  (3:37 PM)

I knew that was coming. The Pats don't get the Titans again. Under, easily.

Sam Aiken (NE)

Am I a useful WR3??

Eric Karabell
  (3:40 PM)

For those who don't know, Galloway has been released and Edelman broke his arm. Aiken becomes the No. 3 guy, but I still don't think that means a whole lot. Not ownable in standard leagues...

George (Hanging around)

Follow up to Joliet Jake... Sure, they don't get the Titans again, but hasn't everyone proclaimed NE to have such an easy schedule for passing coming real soon?

Eric Karabell
  (3:41 PM)

It is a nice schedule, I will admit, but asking for 40 TDs...he's got 12 in six games... I doubt he he gets 28 in his final 10 games. That's a lot.

Eric Karabell (Bristol)

How are my FF teams doing theis year?

Eric Karabell
  (3:42 PM)

Huh? I'm asking myself a question! Well, don't I already know? OK, some teams are good, some not so good. Any fantasy owner with a lot of teams is going to have differing degrees of luck. There's only so much one can control...

joe (ar)

who do you like going forward: Grant, P. Thomas, and Mendenhal?

Eric Karabell
  (3:43 PM)

I think it's still Thomas. Grant is merely average, and Mendenhall is going to lose major touches the first time he has a stinker game. Book it.

Jason (SD)

You were never that high (like most) on Coffee in the first place. Now that Gore is back, is he droppable now?

Eric Karabell
  (3:45 PM)

It's funny, when Coffee became the guy due to the Gore injury, our other rankers loved Coffee.. had him near the top 10. I left him at 30. I took the grief, of course. Didn't bother me, but it amazes me how people jump on a bandwagon due to opportunity, forgetting that the player might not be very good. Coffee didn't do much. Now Gore is back and I can't imagine he'll do anything.

Stephan (Los Angeles)

Over/Under Gore getting 1100yds and 9Td's on the Ground?

Eric Karabell
  (3:47 PM)

Over. He's going to some great things the rest of the way ... and he'll need to get these stats. But I do think he'll get going.

Donovan McNabb's Ribs (PA)

Will I OK after losing starting left tackle Jason Peters?

Eric Karabell
  (3:48 PM)

After that horrific loss to Oakland, I have doubts about the Eagles. Hopefully the line plays better this week. I was cautious on McNabb this week, then stunned that I had ranked him the best...

Bob (PA)

Go PHILLIES!! Should I drop Willie Parker, Coffee or McFadden to pick up someone like LJ or J. Stewart?

Eric Karabell
  (3:50 PM)

You said it. Gotta win tonight... Phils-Yanks series! Revenge for 1950! OK, I would not drop Parker. Really, people, wait until Mendenhall faces a good defense. Stewart over Coffee and McFadden though, and easily.

Brian (Phila)

You heading down to see the Phils clinch tonight? I am...can't wait! Do you like Ginn at all this week? I might deal Derrick Ward for him...

Eric Karabell
  (3:51 PM)

Nah, I am in Bristol today. I was at Sunday's game though... and I have a World Series game, if they make it. (Gotta say if... don't get ahead of ourselves...) Ward has little value, not sure who would deal for him. I don't really like Ginn either though, but he has to be better for now.

JJ (OH - IO)

What exactly IS a flex player?

Eric Karabell
  (3:54 PM)

Now that's the best question of the day. Really, it's a made up term. It's a position in which you can play a running back or a wide receiver... but we call players "flex" options and it never made sense to me. What is a flex player? Someone not good enough to start at RB or WR? Or what? It's an extra slot for someone who should be active...

Mike (NY, NY)

What do you consider to be a "deep" league? A league with more than 12 managers, or does it depend on the number of starting players on each team? Or some combination?

Eric Karabell
  (3:55 PM)

Another great question. Look, I am not a fan of 10-team leagues. They are the standard here, but you finish your draft and starting running backs haven't been drafted. I like deeper leagues. There is no standard definition for a deep league... is a 12-team league deep? If you can activate a combination of 5 or more RBs and WRs it is.

Paul (miami)

Drop K.Walter to pick up Massaquoi?

Eric Karabell
  (3:56 PM)

No, I don't think I would agree with that. Massaquoi had one nice game, but clearly they have QB problems in Cleveland.

Benjamin (Miami)

How do you feel about M. Lynch for rest of the season?

Eric Karabell
  (3:56 PM)

Pretty average. Trent Edwards has ruined all Bills for everyone in fantasy!

Brink (Lexington)

What are your thoughts on adding Laurence Maroney?

Melissa (Sacramento)

Bradshaw, Jacobs or Nicks for flex?

Eric Karabell
  (3:59 PM)

It hardly excites me, but I have to admit he could be the Pats' guy... on TV today I called him a RB4... that gets him owned in many leagues I suppose.

Eric Karabell
  (3:59 PM)

And for the other question, it's Jacobs. I am not giving up... sorry people, some problems with the chat today. Just too many questions!

Eric Karabell
  (4:00 PM)

OK, that is about all the time we have. Thank you, as always, for sending in questions, as it is a pleasure for me to answer as many as I can and help people. Have a great day and good luck in Week 7 and beyond ... and oh yeah, go Phillies...
