Scouts Inc.'s football recruiting chat

Tom Luginbill
  (3:00 PM)

Welcome to this weeks chat football fans. Things have been pretty slow on the recruiting trail for many of the countries top teams, but we are beginning to head down the home stretch and the action is sure to heat up. Let's get to your questions!

Brad (Gadsden,Alabama)

What do you think Alabama will do when McElroy graduates do you think phillip sims could be better than star jackson or aj mccaron?

Tom Luginbill
  (3:02 PM)

Well, it will certainly help Sims to be able to redshirt which will dramatically enhance his chances of being the guy and I believe AJ McCarron will be the stiffest competition over Jackson. Sims will have the strongest arm of the three and has been well groomed.

Nick (Winston Salem)

Who can ND expect to be the next commitment or will the remainder of the top talent take a wait and see approach?

Tom Luginbill
  (3:04 PM)

I think it will either be a defensive back or front seven player which are both huge priorities for ND at this point. Those two positions are what the differecne is between ND and college footballs elite teams. I do also think a wait and see approach is possible especially with a possible 10-2 record in sight.

Chad (Las Vegas)

LSU just landed a big recruit from the west coast. Can you tell me about him?

Tom Luginbill
  (3:06 PM)

DT/OTCassius Marsh. Just saw him live last month and I think he will likely end up as an offensive lineman much like Barksdale did. Very hard-nosed and aggressive kid with good feet, but may not possess the quick twitch athleticism you are accustomed to seeing from LSU's defensive front which is why I think he ends up on offense.

Chris (Murfreesboro, TN)

What's your feeling on Lache Seastrunk and Trevon Reed? LSU or Auburn?

Tom Luginbill
  (3:08 PM)

I think Auburn is still legitimately in the mix for both, but last weekend might have had a bigger influence on Reed than Seastrunk. I still think Michael Dyer will be the back that ends up at Auburn. I also feel Lache needs to be in the spread offense to maximize his upside.

Joe (LA)

Is it just me, or does this seem to be a down year for the usually formidable USC recruiting engine?

Tom Luginbill
  (3:10 PM)

Don't be fooled by numbers-- that is a reflection of available schollies, not progress. When you have limited numbers, you must be very careful to ease the process and make the right choices which is why you are seeing them crusie along at this point.

Marc (Charlotte)

Any chance the Tar Heels get a QB?

Tom Luginbill
  (3:11 PM)

I don't think so. I think they love Bryn Renner and this class has little left to offer at the position, certainly no no-brainers that UNC would jump all over. You don't want to just take anybody.

Brian (Chicago)

Any insight on how traditional programs that have been struggling like Syracuse are recruiting? They seem to have the right guy running the program now but their talent and depth level is atrocious.

Tom Luginbill
  (3:14 PM)

The recruiting landscape has changed so much for Syracuse in the last five years and their recruiting pool and region does not make it easy on them. Plus with the growth of Rutgers and UConn and Pitt the competion has really heated up for them. I think Cuse will have to really find some diamonds in the rough to work towards getting over the hump because right now they are not in the minds of higher profile talent. QB Jonny Miller is a start though.

Scott (New Jersey)

Ohio State has had a nice recruiting class, what do you think are the chances they land some of the big time recruites such as Lamarcus Joyner, Sentrel Henderson or Jordan Hicks.

Tom Luginbill
  (3:16 PM)

I think Hicks is their best chance of the three between OSU and Texas. They need to be concerned about QB depth too.

coach B (tally, FL)

Thoughts on FSU and getting any of these elite defenders tehy seem to have fallen behind on?

Tom Luginbill
  (3:18 PM)

I believe you can expect to see things really slow down for the Noles until they put a plan in place for the future and make it public especially when it comes to staff changes. Their #'s are holding pretty firm right now and as long as that stays the same, I think you will see them close on some kids late.

Greg (Omaha)

How does Nebraska's class look now and with some that we might be close on?

Tom Luginbill
  (3:21 PM)

DT Chase Rome was a key steal as defensive lineman are hard to come by. Many of the remianing kids considering Nebraska are from Texas and southern states which is a good sign of increased speed and their recruiting net being cast wide. Would love to see them snag WR Josh Reese from Miami.

Nick (Pittsburgh)

Can Kolby Gray or Anthony Gonzalez challenge Tino Sunseri for the starting QB spot at Pitt next year?

Tom Luginbill
  (3:22 PM)

I don't think so, but do not be surprised if Gonzalez is used in a Tebow-like role right off the bat. I have seen Gray three times now in person during game action and I think he is a guy that definitely needs development.

Burr (Boca Raton)

Is Lamarcus Joyner serious about ND, or was it just the hype from the USC game? Where do you think he ends up?

Tom Luginbill
  (3:23 PM)

I do think he is serious, but he also loves the flavor of the week so we'll see what he thinks from his next visit and how it compares. ND made a bigger impression on him than I think he expected it to.

Josh (Louisiana)

What are your thoughts on Bama's O? Where they playing above there head the first 5 games?

Tom Luginbill
  (3:25 PM)

No, they are exhausted as a team. The bye week could not have come at a better time. They will be fine.

Mike (Murfreesboro)

Chris Dunkley will be at the Tennessee game this weekend. Any chance of a commitment? He's good friends with Nu'keese Richardson

Tom Luginbill
  (3:26 PM)

I would not say commitment, but the scene will definitely leave a favorable impression and for Tennessee that would be monumental. Keep in mind they have Cobbs and Ambles and kids look at that in their decision. Dunkley is the best of that group though.

Brandon Imbery (Toledo, Ohio)

How big of a game is it for Notre Dame in San Antionio against WSU this weekend recruitment wise?

Tom Luginbill
  (3:27 PM)

It is big for the 2011 class, not so much the current class. Texas is pivotal for their success.

Jake (Chicago)

Duke Duke!! No longer the laughing stock of NCAA football...that said, is David Cutcliffe continuing to bring in better talent each year?

Tom Luginbill
  (3:29 PM)

Absolutely they are doing better as evidenced by their improved play. While their team will be betetr next year it will be interesting to see how a young QB fits in the mix. This is a young team with 15 verbals so far.

Josh (Louisiana)

Where do you see Michael Dyerending up? Does Bama have a shot?

Tom Luginbill
  (3:30 PM)

Auburn as well as TE Dakota Mosley

Terence (New York)

How do yousee Oklahoma filling out their wide reciever class. Big commitment from Justin McCay. How many more do they bring in and who are the likely candidates

Tom Luginbill
  (3:32 PM)

Actually, we think Sheldon McClain has a brighter future if he recovers from injury which he should. WR's darius White and Kenny Stills are key. So is Marcus Lucas.

Javon (Miami)

A lot of talk around Jeff Luc to Tennessee and Monte Kiffin. Your opinion?

Tom Luginbill
  (3:34 PM)

I think it is probable. The more he can be around Monte the better. Tennessee has a lot to sell right now including playing immediately and having an impact. That would be huge, maybe bigger than anyone they could get because of who the comp is for Luc and the shockwaves it would send.

Chad (Las Vegas)

What school has the best facilities in the country? I mean combo of locker room, weight room, academic support, ect; not coaching and prestige.

Tom Luginbill
  (3:36 PM)

Hmmm...Tough one, in about 15 months it will be Tennessee with their new upgrades coming. Just about most of the elite teams are in similar positions now and facilities aren't what they once where in recruiting

Tom Luginbill
  (3:37 PM)

Well, I gotta run and go do some radio commitments. Thanks for joining us and we'll see you again next week. Take care.
