Chat with Matt Williamson

Matt Williamson
  (11:59 AM)

Let's get this rolling...

Mike (Boca Raton)

After his performance monday night v. the Eagles, has Deangelo Hall solidified himself as the fastest NFL player to NEVER catch anyone from behind?

Matt Williamson
  (12:00 PM)

No question. Excellent observation.

Aaron (Flagstaff AZ)

has your time in Cleveland turned you against the Broncos?

Matt Williamson
  (12:00 PM)

Not at all. If anything, my year in Cleveland has turned me against the Browns.

C MEDINA 574 (LAWRENCEVILLE GEORGIA )

WHAT TEAM HAS A BETTER CHANCE OF MAKING THE PLAYOFFS THE NEW YORK JETS OR THE ATLANTA FALCONS

Matt Williamson
  (12:01 PM)

Give me ATL on that one. I think the Jets have problems. The loss of K Jenkins is massive-literally and figuritively. Plus, I just don't see them being able to throw the ball well enough.

J.B. (Dunmore, PA)

Afternoon, M-Dub. The big weekend is finally upon us. Do you see the Viking sweeping the season series against the Pack or will the Cheese Heads get their revenge?

Matt Williamson
  (12:03 PM)

I like Minny in that one. Just a better football team. Rodgers will get hit a ton. Could be the kind of game that Favre goes crazy and plays really well.

Benjamin (Plattsburgh)

what is the ceiling on Nicks, Smith and Manningham as a trio?

Matt Williamson
  (12:05 PM)

All are ascending players, so that is difficult to judge. But, for the short term, I do think there is a ceiling and we are starting to see it lately. This past game was the first time in a long time that I actually thought about Plaxico Burress. A guy like him seemed to really be missed against Zona. Eli is slumping a bit as well, which of course doesn't help. They need to get back to controlling games on the ground and that could happen more going forward with Jacobs. Also, NYG's D needs to get healthy-esp on the backend. Keep games closer.

Mike (MI)

Chances the lions win out and make the playoffs?

Matt Williamson
  (12:05 PM)

Seriously?

derek (fayettville NC)

what do you think of the panthers so far this season

Matt Williamson
  (12:07 PM)

They are a big time contender in the Big East. Oh, Carolina? They stink. Can't stop the run. Terrible QB. Only one pass catcher to speak of. Big problems. I would start going with Matt Moore immediatly and see what you got.

Corey (D.C.)

Matt, I think Jason Campbell would be a great fit for the Titans. He can manage a game, has a cannon arm, is fairly mobile, and has proven (last year) that he can limit his INTs to very few. What do you think?

Matt Williamson
  (12:08 PM)

I thought about him in Carolina actually, but not Tennessee. But I like where you are going here. Could be an excellent fit. Clearly the young man needs a change of scenery. I not ready to throw the towel in on him yet. But...he looks horrific of late though.

J.B. (Dunmore, PA)

Seems like Kevin Kolb had a better chemistry with Brent Celek. Am I way off base here?

Matt Williamson
  (12:09 PM)

May have. That isn't uncommon. Those guys took a lot of 2nd team reps together over their young careers.

Derick (Ohio)

Who has a stronger finish L.Tomlinson or K. Smith?

Matt Williamson
  (12:09 PM)

Would go with K Smith. I really have little faith in LT at all. Smith is the better player right now. Detroit will stick with the run more.

Shane (Los Angeles, CA)

Would you be terribly surprised to see the AFC North send 3 teams to the playoffs this year? Pitt & Cinci are heading there and the Ravens competition for the wild card are the Texans, the Chargers, and the Jets.

Matt Williamson
  (12:11 PM)

That could happen. NEng, Den and Indy all look pretty comfortable a top their divisions. Houston certainly could make the playoffs. Don't feel great about the other two you mentioned. I guess Miami still has an outside shot as well.

Steve (CA)

Ill take J.B.'s comment one further and say the Eagles looked better with Kolb period. They need to make the change and build on Kolb now.

Matt Williamson
  (12:12 PM)

Wow. That is harsh. Wouldn't be shocked if they did go that direction this offseason though. Still, McNabb is proven. They are a big time contender. Gotta go with who brung ya. OR...is it a Brady/Bledsoe type situation?

Yogi (AL)

Matt, how can LT be worse than Kevin Smith when LT already said he is better than Adrian Peterson?

Matt Williamson
  (12:12 PM)

That is an excellent point.

Benjamin (Plattsburgh)

offseason trade..... D McNabb and a 2nd rounder for Stephen Jackson...... am i insane?

Matt Williamson
  (12:13 PM)

Probably are insane, but if I am Philly, I want to go young at QB. They are not just a QB away from being a contender.

John (ny)

matt, do you still think the falcons have a better chance of making the playoffs then the cowboys?

Matt Williamson
  (12:15 PM)

I do. Maybe I am nuts. Dallas was very impressive in that game and I do think that the emergence of M Austin has made the whole O click to some degree. They were really missing that guy that Romo could count on at WR. I still think ATL is very dangerous though. A bit shocked that their O hasn't been more dominant. Tough call-don't get me wrong-but yeah, I do think ATL has the better shot.

Jim (Va)

Should the Jets trade for L. Johnson?

Matt Williamson
  (12:15 PM)

Ewww. No. I would rather have Greene or Jones at this point than LJ.

Matt Williamson
  (12:16 PM)

Not sure anyone would really want LJ by the way.

Ryan (San Diego)

Seriously, why the hate on LT? He had over 100 yards against Denver and 70 last week and that is behind one of the WORST lines in the league. Seriously, have you watched the tape? The blocking is absolutely horrible

Matt Williamson
  (12:17 PM)

His blocking is terrible. But he is no where close to where he once was. Can't get to the edge like he did. Can't make that first guy miss like he did. Very little burst. Little big play ability. When he got in the open field a few years ago-it was over. Not anymore. Is he worthless? No. But he is half the player he once was.

J.B. (Dunmore, PA)

With back-to-back big games though, don't you think teams will start paying closer attention to Austin?

Matt Williamson
  (12:18 PM)

Of course and he will have some ups and downs. Was very inconsistent before two games ago-I doubt that has all gone away. But, wow, he is really racking up the yards after the catch. It's like DBs can't get him on the ground.

Jay (Connecticut)

Matty Ice...looking ahead to when Denver goes to Indy, your thoughts on can Denver FINALLY get over the Indy jinx and beat them??? I am hoping the McDaniels knowledge from playing them in the past will give Denver the boost it will need to get over the hump. Your thoughts?

Matt Williamson
  (12:19 PM)

Denver can't be worrying about that game. They travel to Baltimore this week Bro. And they are going to lose in Baltimore.

Rigidy (Hartford)

People do realize the trade deadline has passed right?

Matt Williamson
  (12:19 PM)

I think everyone is talking about after the season. At least I assumed they were.

Jay (Connecticut)

you just angred me Matt! But I still love ya, even though your wrong.

Matt Williamson
  (12:20 PM)

Fair enough. Stop back next week and we shall see. Balt isn't a joke.

Caleb (Los Angeles)

Hey Matt, I know it was against the Raiders but you had to be impressed with the way Shonn Greene ran against them.

Matt Williamson
  (12:21 PM)

I really was. Didn't expect to see as much lateral agility and overall explosiveness as he showed. Broke off some longer runs too. Great balance. I wasn't real big on him coming out of Iowa, but he moves better than I thought. He will be the starter there next year.

Jay (Connecticut)

Wait, I didnt say they were a joke, but do you think Denver is? C'mon, they ahve the #1 defense now. Please explain...

Matt Williamson
  (12:22 PM)

I don't think Denver is a joke at all, but Baltimore is at home and coming off a bye. Tough place to play. Very proud football team with excellent leadership. I just feel like Denver is walking into a buzz saw this week. That happens and it isn't a knock on the Broncos.

Craig G. (Fairfield, California)

Hey Matt, who do you think will ultimately win the NFC West?

Matt Williamson
  (12:23 PM)

Arizona. That D is playing great. They do give up too many big plays, but are certainly capable of making big plays of their own on O. Now, it looks like Zona is incorporating Wells and a power running game finally. They were impressive in NY.

Corey (D.C.)

Im with Matt. The Ravens blocking will limit the Denver front 7 from dominating the game, which eat the clock, control field positision, and allow the Ravens to play their game. Ravens take it 23-17.

Matt Williamson
  (12:24 PM)

Could surely see a close game. But I like your points as well. The Ravens' CBs can surely be exposed though.

Shawn (Toronto)

Matt, how do you think Glenn Dorsey has done in his transition to DE in the 3-4 so far? Some are starting to call him a bust but I've watched all the Chiefs games this year and he's played well against the run from what I can tell.

Matt Williamson
  (12:26 PM)

I really don't think he fits that scheme well at all and he could be a terrific upfield 3 Technique type. But, I do agree. He is showing improvement. I really like what he has to offer-but I also contend that he is in a sceme that really isn't doing him any favors.

Bruce (GA)

Dwayne Bowe: Legit #1 WR in the making, or not quite top teir?

Matt Williamson
  (12:27 PM)

Not quite. But he is awfully good. I just am timid about throwing that term around. There might only be a dozen or so Legit #1s in this league in my opinion, but Bowe is probably about the 15th best WR or so. It sure would help if KC could pass block and if they picked up another weapon to lighten his load.

Anthony (NYC)

M-Dub at this point of the season with such as the Titans, Browns, & Bucs, shouldn't those franchises look to play Young, Quinn,

Matt Williamson
  (12:29 PM)

Well, the Bucs have already gone young at QB with J Johnson-who I think is rather promising. As for VY-we probably will see him. But, I also contend, that Fisher and company have seen enough of VY to know that he really isn't the answer. The Browns' situation is a mess too. DA obviously is not good enough. Wouldn't mind seeing Ratliff. Quinn is trade bait? But, I do feel like you need to give Quinn another shot. Must be CERTAIN that he is not the guy before the end of this season.

J.B. (Dunmore, PA)

Has Matt Cassel been exposed as a system QB?

Matt Williamson
  (12:31 PM)

To some degree. He is another guy who really hasn't played all that football at this level yet. And his OL is horriific. But still, Bill Williamson asked me about him yesterday and I said pretty much the same thing. That yes, he is probably a system guy who could be a caretaker plus. But, I don't blame him for KC's troubles this year.

Tom (TX)

I dont care what anyone says, Mangini and the Browns arent going to bother with Quinn because of the bonus he would get playing 70% of the snaps. Is Quinn good enough? Who knows. But we do know the Browns arent going to pay $11M to find out.

Matt Williamson
  (12:31 PM)

Kinda forgot about that actually. Good point.

Corey (D.C.)

Matt, speaking of "system QBs". Dont all 32 teams have an offensive "system"? is that even a legit quesiton?

Matt Williamson
  (12:33 PM)

I think what he was getting at is that players like Cutler, Roethlisberger, Ryan, etc can pretty much be succesful in any system. Whereas with a guy like Cassel (and Orton) you need to build a system around what they do well and what their limitations are. You can still win that way, but it is much tougher.

Brad (NM)

Is Ryan Fitzpatrick able to push Buffalo towards the playoffs by chance?..if not..Jauron's time in Buffalo is done right?

Matt Williamson
  (12:33 PM)

Oh my no. Fitzpatrick isn't leading the Bills to anything. And yes, I expect Jauron to be gone....and I can't argue with it.

Jorge (Mexico)

Hola Matt. With the possibility in a few years of a London-based franchise, can you explain how would that work in terms of the traveling and scheduling? Thanks

Matt Williamson
  (12:34 PM)

Sounds like an absolute nightmare to me and I really don't see it ever really happening.

Thomas (Bay Area, CA)

Who is better at defense this year? Steelers or Broncos?

Matt Williamson
  (12:35 PM)

To date? Denver. But, I will take the Steelers going forward. More talent. More playmakers. More proven. Probably better coached.

todd (jersey shore)

ive always tought garcia was a good QB . do you see him playing anymore?

Matt Williamson
  (12:36 PM)

Not sure why he and the Raiders couldn't get along, as he surely would be their starter right now. But, he is also very limited. His skill set has really dwindled-and it wasn't great to begin with. Such a herky jerky QB too-real tough to get into a real grove or in a timing based offense. And...he is real old.

Brian (Folsom, CA)

As a scout, did you notice anything different from Alex Smith's play on Sunday than from before his shoulder injury?

Matt Williamson
  (12:38 PM)

He has grown up and is more comfident in his own abilities. We must remember that Smith and the Niners went through offensive systems at a very rapid rate in his early years. So tough to mature as a player that way. I like what I have seen though and think he might just be the answer going forward. I am also sure that Hill is just a backup.

Tyler (Tennessee)

Who is your Super Bowl favorites so far this year?

Matt Williamson
  (12:39 PM)

Not sure how you can get away from the Saints vs. Colts. Both are playing so incredibly well right now. Tremendous QB play. A lot can happen of course, but right now, they look to be on a collision course.

J.B. (Dunmore, PA)

Um, Garcia is younger than a certain QB making a home coming this weekend.

Matt Williamson
  (12:40 PM)

True, but that guy heading back to Green Bay is an utter freak of nature. He has completley blown me away from a physical standpoint. Hasn't dropped off. Even when Garcia's arm was at it's very best, it wasn't nearly as strong as Favre's is at 40.

Josh (Cleveland)

If the Broncos win the Super Bowl, would you then be willing to move them into the top 5 of your power rankings?

Matt Williamson
  (12:41 PM)

Perhaps! If they win this week, I would certainly have them in my top 5. I do think these teams are superior to Denver right now though: Indy, NOrls, PGH, NEng and Minny.

john (steel city)

who is better for the steelers parker or mendenhall

Matt Williamson
  (12:42 PM)

Mendenhall and M Moore. This is a passing O and Moore is the best in that role. Also the the most reliable overall. Mendenhall needs touches though. Have to get him ready for the playoffs. Have to keep him maturing and growing in all areas.

Brent (Big Easy)

Matt, did Miami expose how to get to Brees and beat the Saints or did the Saints have a bad game plan coming into the game???

Matt Williamson
  (12:44 PM)

I would say more of the latter. Brees didn't play great early. I do think that NOrls' OTs can really be exposed, but actually getting to Brees is so difficult because he gets it out so quick and feels pressure so well. I am not sure why Miami go away from their Wild Cat though in the 4th quarter. That is really all they do well on O and it was working.

Tyler (Tennessee)

Do the falcons have a chance to beat the saints monday night?

Matt Williamson
  (12:44 PM)

No question. Turner doesn't look as good as last year, but if they can get him going early, ATL can play with anyone. Still, I don't like ATL's secondary's chances of success.

Al (Wausau, WI)

Matt, if the Vikings beat Green Bay this weekend they will go into the bye with a 7-1 record. Their first 3 games after the bye are all at home and are against Detroit, Seattle, and Chicago. Might we be talking a 10-1 record after 11 games for the Vikings?

Matt Williamson
  (12:45 PM)

Seems very possible to me. Excellent football team. Dripping with talent.

Jeff (Denver)

Didn't we beat New England? Why are they ranked higher than US?!

Matt Williamson
  (12:46 PM)

Most people have the Broncos higher. I don't. Felt like Brady left a ton of plays on the field in that game and if they were to play a best of seven series, that I would go with NEng. One game is not enough for me to greatly alter my thoughts on a specific team. Long season.

Matt Williamson
  (12:47 PM)

Still...I feel like I am Denver basher. I am not. I do think they are very strong in just about all areas right now. I am shocked that they are this good-but I do recognize it.

Carol (Miami)

How good is Austin Collie?

Matt Williamson
  (12:48 PM)

Perfect for what they do. So reliable. Catches everything. Sharp route runner. Willing to put the extra time in to be great with Manning. Tremendous pick by Polian.

Abley (Able)

Do you miss being a Zip?

Matt Williamson
  (12:49 PM)

VERY happy doing what I am doing, but my time with the Zips was awesome too. We got there and started to more or less build a program together with JD leading the parade. Lived in the facility. Great stuff.

corey (d.c.)

Why do people care about rankings? Im a Cowboys fan and dont care if ESPN ranks them 32nd.

Matt Williamson
  (12:50 PM)

Not sure, but wow, does it really get under people's skin. They are VERY hard to do by the way. Here is an exercise for all you. Rank every team. 1 to 32. Who's better? The Jags or Seahawks? How about Tennessee or Washington? Not a walk in the park. And then, one week later, you look back at your rankings and say, wow, I was really wrong about this team. Such is life. I enjoy it however and would like to do them every week.

J.B. (Dunmore, PA)

Dripping with talent until we get to the defensive secondary, which is probably without Winfield again Sunday, M-Dub. The Vikes can get pounded by good QBs and they have several coming up on the schedule.

Matt Williamson
  (12:51 PM)

That is certainly the Achilles heel-but you got to give that secondary credit for how they played in Pittsburgh. The Steelers' passing attack is no joke at all. Still, that would worry me. Their pass rush will help of course.

Jeromey22 ((MS))

Do you think Peyton Manning is the best QB right now

Matt Williamson
  (12:52 PM)

I think he is best football player in the world right now.

Matt (Philly)

Umm...didn't the Seahawks beat the Jags 41-0?

Matt Williamson
  (12:53 PM)

Was just pulling that out of the air, but both teams are extremely up and down. Very hard to get a bead on. If they played again, it wouldn't shock me if Jacksonville won. Just sayin'

James (Indy)

Matty!!!! You pulling Trick or Treat duty with the kiddos on Saturday?

Matt Williamson
  (12:53 PM)

Well, the kids are only three and one years old. Not hitting a lot of houses, but we do it right here. My wife is a Halloween nut. Pretty big party at the Dubb residence.

Mike (San Francisco)

Michael Crabtree: o/u 700 yards, 5 tds?

Matt Williamson
  (12:54 PM)

I like that line. He is awfully good and that passing game in general should be on the upswing. They have some weapons now.

Jeff (Denver)

One game is all you need to win the Super Bowl though. Marshall is more involved in the offense, D's playing well, the running game is good enough to keep the opponent guessing. Believe in us... :)

Matt Williamson
  (12:57 PM)

I am buying in, but one game is not all you need. Lets just say that Denver, NEng, Indy, Pittsburgh, Cincy and Baltimore all go to the post season. Let's give Indy the #1 spot and Cincy and Balt the Wild Cards. Will even give the Broncos a first round bye. So, they probably have to open with either Pittsburgh or NEng in Denver. Then travel to Indy. Then, beat a team like NOrls or Minny. Brutal road. And on a road like that, small problems get exposed. Not saying that Denver is incapable, but that is what it takes to hoist Lombardi.

Ross (Chicago)

Can we all agree Jay Cutler needs to learn to throw the ball away? And can you imagine what he could be doing in Denver right now?!

Matt Williamson
  (12:59 PM)

He would be much better in Denver. Actually, I think he would be better than Orton. Not a knock on Orton, but Cutler would bring much more big play ability to the O. He also would turn the ball over much more too...which Orton excels at. Chicago has zero running game right now and Cutler is trying to do everything himself. That is when things go heywire.

Brett (WI)

So with Crabtree in the fold, Smith starting, and Gore back healthy, can the 49ers keep things close against Indy?

Matt Williamson
  (1:00 PM)

The O might do okay, but just keeping up with Indy's fire power is awfully tough. I see the Niners' secondary at a huge disadvantage. SFran will have to control the clock to have a shot. Can they? Hmmm...maybe. But, its a long shot...and Manning has shown that he doesn't need a lot of plays to score a lot of points.

Matt Williamson
  (1:01 PM)

Folks, I am out. This was a grin. Stop back next Wednesday at noon. Adios.
