Chat with David Thorpe

David Thorpe
  (12:01 PM)

Hi Sportsnation. It's finally here! No, not my "Superfreakonomics" book, the NBA season. I have Dvorak's "Rusalko" playing, and I'm ready to go."Good luck finding someone who can move, and shake...like this".

Harry (Babylon)

If Charles Barkley is right how does Coach D'Antoni prevent a "get mine" attitude from creeping into his team this year?

David Thorpe
  (12:01 PM)

I don't agree with your premise, so I have no answer.

Veruca (Wonka's factory)

Daddy, I want a rookie report, and I want it now!

David Thorpe
  (12:01 PM)

It's coming, dear, Thursday I think.

john (Queen City)

Orlando vs. LA finals. What do you think?

David Thorpe
  (12:02 PM)

I'd be thrilled, 'cause I'd get to see some games in person. But I think Boston has a better chance in the east, and I like the Spurs a bit more out west.

Marc (Charlotte)

SuperFreakonomics is excellent. Pre-ordered my copy and picked it up last Tuesday!

David Thorpe
  (12:03 PM)

My wife thought it a bit dry, but that's my taste in books.

Marc (Charlotte)

Do you see Raymond Felton improving this year under the continuing tutelage of Larry Brown?

David Thorpe
  (12:03 PM)

Sure.

Dennis (NJ)

Can CDR fit at SF for all 82 games or is he too small?

David Thorpe
  (12:04 PM)

He won't need to play all his mins there-he's going to be fine.

Sam (Cleveland)

Coach, thoughts on the Cavs, and are you on Facebook?

David Thorpe
  (12:04 PM)

Yes, David B. Thorpe. The Cavs will be 50+ winners, but will need so much from LBJ to get there. I don't like them, as currently constructed.

Brian (Orlando)

Damn David, why do you have to schedule your chats when I have to leave for Chem. Two part question: Just watched Dazed and Confused, where does it rank in your favorite movies list?Second, did you see Bynum play last night? Pretty good stat line. Do you see him keeping it up all season, barring injury of course.

David Thorpe
  (12:06 PM)

Never saw it, not a fan of drug movies that don't feature Cheech or Chong (in fact, I think I barely liked them when I was a teenager). Yes, I've been a fan of Bynum for years, after not being one initially. He'll be a wrecking crew if healthy.

Glenn Overall (Memphis)

Who would have predicted Carmelo Anthony would start playing defense. Can the same thing happen to Rudy Gay one day? Do you think it will happen?

David Thorpe
  (12:06 PM)

Yes and yes.

jon (CA)

You worked with the Kings Casspi right? How did he look, how good do you think he can be and what are the biggest area's he needs to continue to work on? Tyreke Evans when the years ends will he be one of the top two rookies this year?

David Thorpe
  (12:07 PM)

He spent 3 weeks with us before training camp. He's a fluid athlete at 6'9 and an excellent shooter. Playing his role this year will be tough, cause he likes to do a lot, but he'll figure it out. Evans should be a top 3 guy in my report all year.

Sean (LA)

Thopedo -I thought Reggie Miller made a great point during the Laker game last night that so long as Artest keeps his head on straight the only team that can beat the Lakers are the Lakers. He pointed out that the Lakers have FIVE guys that can create mismatches on the block (Kobe, Artest, Pau, Bynum, and Odom). He said the most any other team has is 2 and because of this the Lakers on any given night can DOMINATE you on the block and create easy points. You look through the other top 4-5 teams and there is just NO WAY they can match up with the Lakers. No matter where you look there are 2-3 mismatches out there. The team when at full strength is SCARY good and head and shoulder more talented then any team in the league!

David Thorpe
  (12:08 PM)

I think Reggie is better at playing horse than as an analyst.

Mike Brown (Cleveland, OH)

Man I need to figure out my bench rotation...any ideas?

David Thorpe
  (12:08 PM)

Yes-go sign a big that can shoot 3's.

Aaron (Richmond, VA)

Any chance the Pistons can gel this year and make the playoffs?

David Thorpe
  (12:09 PM)

Absolutely, though the Wizards look like they will have some say. Just another team to compete with.

Brandon (Cedar Rapids, IA)

Hey, @coachthorpe, any hope for the Rockets this year? I feel like they're in purgatory: just out of the playoffs, end of the lottery. What can be done to salvage this season?

David Thorpe
  (12:10 PM)

That's my Twitter name, don't wear it out. No, not much hope for them, though they are my favorite team every year to watch because of their toughness. Although I really enjoyed watching Boston last night.

Hank (Bowling Green, KY)

Can Courtney Lee become an All-Star playing for New Jersey?

David Thorpe
  (12:11 PM)

It's possible, but not likely. Still, he can be a very good player there.

Jonathan (DC)

Wedding Singer! Hope for the Knicks? 8th seed? Galinari 14-5-5?

David Thorpe
  (12:12 PM)

Correct! Lovitz helped make that movie great. Yes, there is hope for NY, and good numbers for Gallo are a must for that to happen, it seems.

John (Hanalei, HI)

Do you think Spencer Hawes can ever be a defensive presence, or do the Kings need to find someone else to plug the hole in the middle?

David Thorpe
  (12:13 PM)

Any presence, besides that of a tall shooter, would be nice. He's in real danger of becoming a secondary guy.

George (Houston)

In the long run who will make a bigger impact on their team, Ron Artest with the Lakers or Trevor Ariza with the Rockets

David Thorpe
  (12:14 PM)

How long is the run? In a marathon, I take Ariza. Middle distance, probably Ron.

Andy (Oregon)

What can we expect from this Rondo situation? It seems crazy to think that the celtics wouldn't want to keep around a possible top 3 pg.

David Thorpe
  (12:15 PM)

It's an example of how numbers alone do not finish the deal. How he fits into the overall culture counts.

matt (tampa fl)

I am a big al thornton fan but rarely see him mentioned favorably in clippers analysis. what r your thoughts on him?

David Thorpe
  (12:16 PM)

Probably overrated, too inefficient on offense and not strong on d. He may lose his starting job there soon.

KJ (Middle Tennessee State Uni.)

How do you see James Johnson being used in the Bulls gameplan? Rookie of the Year by chance?

David Thorpe
  (12:16 PM)

No chance for ROY. Too many vets in front of him.

brian ((philly))

Coach Thorpe, in 3 years, who's the best PG to be taken in the 2009 draft?

David Thorpe
  (12:16 PM)

R-u-b-i-o.

David Thorpe
  (12:17 PM)

Say it like the lost boys did for their leader in "Hook".

Andy (Dallas, TX)

Of the big off season signings this offseason, who do you think had the best night? (i.e. Shaq, Sheed, RonRon, the Matrix)

David Thorpe
  (12:17 PM)

Sheed, with a side of Quis.

MP (Guam)

Mr. T, love your insight. Cavs went out got Shaq, Moon, Parker yet other than different names on the back of the jerseys of the other four guys on court they looked like the same team on offense from last year with LBJ getting it at the top of the key and everyone else spreading. Is this moreso because LeBron may have a tough time adjusting his game to take advantage of the other talent or is the Cavs coaching staff that uncreative on offensive?

David Thorpe
  (12:18 PM)

They mix in some actions throughout the game that are nice, but there is no flow to ever produce anything late in a possession. Too dependent on Bron.

Chris (J-Ville)

David, is there any reason to believe that the ECF will be anything other than Orlando vs. Boston? Cleveland looked pretty dismal last night...

David Thorpe
  (12:19 PM)

They did, but it's a long season, with trade potential. If Hickson is not part of the solution now, they can trade him for someone that will be.

Manny (Oakland)

There's a lot of young talent on the Warriors - can Don Nelson right the ship and get everyone including Capt Jackson headed in the same direction? Also, is there another coach in the NBA who cares LESS about defense than does Nelson?

David Thorpe
  (12:20 PM)

Maybe not another coach, but I can think of one player who cares less about d. Can you name him?

SCOTT (INDIANAPOLIS, IN)

Lebron's 1st block on Ray. A, Jame's hand hit the ball but his body slammed into Ray's--were's the foul and why is it not even mentioned--he fouls alot, like most pro. b-ballers------I believe if guys would just have guts to take charges on Lebron, you would take away all of his off. ------ HE IS THE MOST OVER HYPED PRO. ATHLETE EVER-----not even in the top 5 of b-ballers I would build my eam around RIGHT NOW

David Thorpe
  (12:21 PM)

Scott, do yourself a favor. Go jump in Lake Minnetonka, and purify yourself. You are, currently, out of your mind.

Dave (Chicago)

Loved your tweets last night coach. Will you be doing that every night? Man, I hope so. It helps us to understand what we are seeing.

David Thorpe
  (12:22 PM)

No I won't, but thanks. I hope to pick one night a week to do one big game.

Matt Gunst (San Antonio)

why are you the only NBA "insider" who likes the spurs? frankly i dont see Kobe-Artest working in L.A. and Ti Duncan has never had a better supporting cast

David Thorpe
  (12:23 PM)

Everyone is afraid of their health holding up. I'm just the only one not smart enough to factor that stuff in.

Eddie (Fresno)

So, you think in 3 years Tyreke will be playing the 2? Or do you actually think Rubio will be a better player?

David Thorpe
  (12:23 PM)

Evans will end up playing off the ball a lot, which is fine. But as a pg, Rubio is best in class.

Kevin (Chicago)

Wow, Scott needs some pancakes. Pancakes

David Thorpe
  (12:24 PM)

Mmmm, everything is better after pancakes. Good call.

Terry (Frisco)

Do you believe the Clippers are a fortune suffering from misfortune? I think Blake Griffin will be a very good player, but with the Clips I have to temper my enthusiasm. What do you think?

David Thorpe
  (12:25 PM)

I can't imagine any type of karma impacting the fortunes of a basketball team. But that's just me.

Jason (Orlando)

Coach, you going to be at the Magic vs 76ers game tonight?

David Thorpe
  (12:26 PM)

That's a negative. I'll be managing my AA Baseball team as we try to rebound from our first loss of the season after a month of nothing but victories and solid play.

Troy (Madison, WI)

David, you're putting up a whole lot of questions with no answers.

David Thorpe
  (12:27 PM)

Oh no!!! I've answered each one. Perhaps the General from "War Games" had it best. "This system sucks".

Bryon (Indianapolis)

I saw Hibbert out chasing chickens. Is this a breakout year for him?

David Thorpe
  (12:27 PM)

It looks that way, yes. I hope it is, I've been high on him for years.

Taj Gibson (Chicago)

What did Tyrus do with you in the offseason? and You think I can get the PF by the end of the year?

David Thorpe
  (12:28 PM)

I did not see TT this summer, he stayed in Chicago all summer. If he plays to his potential, you'll be a good backup to him. If not, I'd guess you will take his spot.

Josh (Gainesville)

Why do my comments never make it on this chat?? Theres a better chance of Thorpe projecting the Magic to win the champoinship than my comments getting posted!

David Thorpe
  (12:29 PM)

Lighten up Josh, your making my alma mater look bad.

Rich (Wilmington)

That name would be Monte Ellis

David Thorpe
  (12:29 PM)

Good guess, but not quite it.

Steve (palm bay)

What do you expect to see out of Beasley as a starter this season? Will Wade have a shot at the MVP award?

David Thorpe
  (12:30 PM)

I expect a big year from both, and yes, Wade has an MVP shot.

ryan (dc)

no defense = zac randolph?

David Thorpe
  (12:30 PM)

Closer, but not the answer.

J.B. (Dunmore, PA)

Hey geography whiz...Lake Minnetonka is in Minneapolis not Indianapolis. On that note, what can I expect from Jonny Flynn this year? What happens when Rubio is in the mix?

David Thorpe
  (12:32 PM)

Dude, I saw Purple Rain, I know where it is. But I didn't know the names of any lakes in Indy that had purifying powers. Flynn will be good this year, probably not great. But I expect you will never see Rubio in a Wolves jersey.

Reinis (Riga)

Steve Nash then?

David Thorpe
  (12:32 PM)

Nope.

JAMAL (DC)

NEVER BEEN IN YOUR CHAT BUT YOU SEEM LIKE A HATER DAVID, ILL BE HAPPY TO SEE THE LAKERS REPEAT AND YOU EAT CROW

David Thorpe
  (12:33 PM)

This "hater" picked Kobe to win the MVP 2 years ago, and the Lakers to win the Finals two straight years.

Freddy (So Cal)

I believe you are referring to Amar'e Stoudamire!!!

David Thorpe
  (12:33 PM)

Nope again. But excellent guess. A hint-he played last night.

David (Washington, DC)

Gilbert Arenas looks healthy and the team appears to have outstanding depth. Any chance they could finish top 4 in the East?

David Thorpe
  (12:34 PM)

They have a chance at #4, sure.

Jesse Blanchard (San Antonio)

If Griffin's knee limits or prevents him from playing significant time, who gets the ROY? Flynn and Evans would seem to get the required number of shots and minutes but Blair probably will post better per minute numbers.

David Thorpe
  (12:34 PM)

All 3 will be right there.

Thomas (LA) [via mobile]

Can Eric Gordon be the perimeter stopper the Clippers need? He's got great feet but he's a bit small

David Thorpe
  (12:34 PM)

Not at the 2, but he can guard most 1's well.

Ron (Atlanta)

The Point Guard situation in Portland will Miller eventually start over Blake? The team looked more composed and fluent when he(Miller) was out there.

David Thorpe
  (12:35 PM)

I think so.

J (Milwaukee)

Why do you think the Spurs are going to be better than the Lakers in the end?

David Thorpe
  (12:35 PM)

I like their chemistry better, potentially anyway. Of course, the Lakers could be the better team. It's not clear cut by any means.

Troy (Madison, WI)

How about Brandon Jennings, any shot at rookie of the year? Please don't say, "Sure, a shot."

David Thorpe
  (12:37 PM)

What should I say? Some guys have a good chance, others a small chance, and most have no chance. He's in the small chance group.

Joe (MN)

He would be talking about defenseless-dirk!

David Thorpe
  (12:37 PM)

C'mon people!! Did you not see the Cavs game, or Phoenix last year, or the HEAT before that?

Marc (Charlotte)

What are your thoughts on Ty Lawson this year?

David Thorpe
  (12:38 PM)

Me likey. Perfect fit over there.

josh (slc)

you are a hater you only answer questions about the obvious!

David Thorpe
  (12:39 PM)

Funny, I think of myself as a lover who only answers obvious questions.

Alon (Brooklyn, NY)

Shaq!!!! What's the deal with Eddie Curry, is there any hope?

David Thorpe
  (12:39 PM)

Bingo. Not much for Curry, I'm afraid, and I had heard so many positives about him this summer.

LJ (Artesia)

How can you like the chemistry of a Spurs team that has a bunch of new parts we have hardly seen play together, over the chemistry of a team that won a title together and only made 1 change? That makes no sense, coach. Chemistry is built with a big does of continuity. The Spurs may well end up having that, but no one can just assume it to be true, let alone claiming they like it when it hasn't yet had the time to develop.

David Thorpe
  (12:40 PM)

Excellent point, except that the new guys the Spurs added are all easy guys to coach and manage. Can you say that about your new guy?

Dustin (austin)

barkley as GM? Thoughts?

David Thorpe
  (12:41 PM)

He's a funny guy.

David Thorpe
  (12:41 PM)

He's a funny guy.

Patrick (Munich)

I think Coach Collins just made a great point. When playing off a subpar shooter (Rondo), you also give him a much better opportunity to get an offensive rebound. (Of course, the offensive player must still really want the board, too.) Your thoughts on this?

David Thorpe
  (12:42 PM)

Did not make much sense to me, except when RR is the one shooting. Otherwise, a defender will be off his man and towards the ball when the shot is taken. Maybe they'll be a little more off RR, but that comes at a cost too. Either way, he's very hard to keep off the glass.

Brendan (St. Louis)

Do you see George Hill as being a Most Improved type player this year? He looked great in the preseason.

David Thorpe
  (12:43 PM)

Yes I do, and a key contributor for them.

Vanessa (Gainesville, FL)

Funny how? Like a clown, to amuse you?

David Thorpe
  (12:43 PM)

Exactly.

Kevin (LA)

Lebron scores 38, rest of team scores 51 in loss to Celtics. Cause for concern?

David Thorpe
  (12:43 PM)

Indeed.

Jeff (Norwalk)

with the hornets now with posey, peja, diogu and collison on the bench, do they still lack that bench depth of past years?

David Thorpe
  (12:44 PM)

Don't forget Thornton. They are better there.

crazy joe davola (Anytown, USA)

Love the chats Thorpe!! OK take a player like Kevin Martin, who's worked so hard to become an All-Star caliber player. Now, for all his efforts, he is on a terrible terrible team. Any idea how players like him feel about this? Are they just happy to be in the NBA making millions or is there a serious hole there for most of players in his situation?

David Thorpe
  (12:46 PM)

It's a combination. Players have a tough time looking at a team like an outsider, so they always overestimate their chances with their team. Thankfully. In Kevin's case, just like in KG's, Ray Allen's, Pierce's, etc (when they were on bad teams), his job is to keep getting better and hope for good things to happen.

CJ (San Francisco)

Chances of this happening: Sean May is Most Improved Player. Evens gets ROY. And the Kings still only win 18-20 games. Your thoughts?

David Thorpe
  (12:47 PM)

No way for May. Very possible for Evans, and 20 might be what happens for the Kings.

Michael (Indianapolis)

What is the ceiling for Pyscho T as a pro?

David Thorpe
  (12:47 PM)

Probably a great guy off the bench, but maybe he can be a good starter. I can't wait to see him play.

Josh (DC)

I can respect your pick of the Spurs over the Lakers, but I would like you to be more specific beyond generalities. The Lakers big advantage over most teams is their size. They have that same advantage over the Spurs. Can you talk about why the Spurs would win in spite of that? Thanks.

David Thorpe
  (12:49 PM)

I don't see size being that big an advantage over the Spurs. Parker and Manu can carve up the Lakers in their ballscreen actions. Spurs will execute better, I think.

bill (boston)

KG cant jump enough to throw down a wide open uncontested dunk. concern?

David Thorpe
  (12:49 PM)

Not yet-it will take time.

LA Fan (LA)

Do you think Lamar and company is a distraction to the Lakers?

David Thorpe
  (12:51 PM)

Not really, but I did read that one of the bench players daughters was having her hair done by one of Odom's new sisters n law. That could be an issue, but I doubt it-the bench guys already have distractions to deal with.

ron (chicago)

Luol Deng, can he get back to his old form and can the bulls compete this season as a playoff team?

David Thorpe
  (12:53 PM)

I'm not sure, but probably. Tibial fractures are dangerous to rush back from, unless surgery was used. It wasn't. Yes, the Bulls will be in the thick of the playoff hunt.

Kevin (LA)

Back to your point of Manu and Parker's ballscreens, Laker's point guard defense another weak point this year?

David Thorpe
  (12:54 PM)

That's on the bigs too. It's not a knock on them, more of a respect thing to the Spurs guys, who are supreme at this action.

Michael (Detroit)

Last chat, I said "you can't be a SUPER star" in this league and be #2 on your own team. You replied "So who's not a superstar PP or KG?". Because of work, I was unable to rebound your question "Who is the Clear #2?"

David Thorpe
  (12:55 PM)

Last night it was KG. So Pau is not a super?

Mike (Akron)

After one game people are saying the CAvs have problems. its good to know that Championships are won in October and november and not June. Trust me, JJ Hickson learns Basketball, Cavs beat boston Handily. Also need Delonte to guard either Rondo or Allen.

David Thorpe
  (12:56 PM)

Missing Delonte was a big factor, but no one can feel good about his chances going forward, as of today.

Andy (Oregon)

Who has the top bench this year? Celtics, Blazers, Lakers, spurs or any others?

David Thorpe
  (12:56 PM)

All 4 are special, though Boston and Portland may have slight edges.

mike (NYC)

last year, cle started off 1-2 and orl started off 0-2. thats your Eastern conf. finals. ie, its way to early to jump to conclusions - agreed?

David Thorpe
  (12:57 PM)

of course.

Jill (Univerity of Oklahoma)

What are the chances Kevin Durant wins the NBA scoring title this year?

David Thorpe
  (12:58 PM)

Solid, but I'd guess he does not care about that. He, and the town, needs to see more winning this year.

Devon (San Francisco)

Who is the best all-time overseas big guy in NBA? Including all former players who may have come into the league slightly past their prime (ie Sabonis). Does anyone's game translate better than Pau's? Thank you and enjoy the rest of your day.

David Thorpe
  (12:59 PM)

Gotta go Dream, then Pau.

mike (NYC)

delonte was on the bench last night. its not like he is awol. i dont think any of us can comment one way or the other about his chances of returning soon or not.

David Thorpe
  (1:00 PM)

Actually, we should all be rooting for him to take a long vacation and get away from all this for awhile. Getting some help would be good too. I hope he ends up being happy and safe.

Garron (Boston, MA)

You'd take Pau over Dirk? I know Dirk's not a traditional big guy, but the requirement is just to have played PF/C right?

David Thorpe
  (1:01 PM)

I was thinking pure post guy. That's all. Both are phenomenal.

David Thorpe
  (1:01 PM)

Time's up. Almost 1000 questions, a great way to start the season. Thanks to all of you. Have a great weekend. Be safe.
