Good Morning Sports Nation friends...Sad loss for my Niners - more sad about DeSean Jackson's two points in my fantasy league which did NOT help me out. Perhaps most sad about Greg Olsen giving me 25 points on my BENCH!OK - I've gotten that out. Hope all of you had a better fantasy weekend...What's on your mind?
Hey Stephania - nice write-up in the PAW! Was the weak return by Megatron a product of his injury or just the Vikings D?
Clay: Thank you!! Are you a fellow Tiger? Megatron had nine targets but only two catches - I think he was out of bounds on one, underthrown a couple of times. Overall not a great team performance. Coach Jim Schwartz acknowledged that Johnson was not yet 100% but felt that his presence still opened things up for the offense. And as far as we're hearing, no setbacks. So hopefully he's able to really practice more this week and they get in sync...and his stats improve.
Hi Steph, how is Donald Brown looking now. Does it look like he might have a chance to go this Sunday?
Mike: This is one of those where we won't get much clue until later in the week. Last week he was OFF the injury report Weds/Thurs but when he didn't practice Friday we did not hear from the Colts as to whether this was a setback or just rest. When he didn't play Sunday it became clear the shoulder was still giving him some problems. So once again, the Colts rest him a couple days and will see how he fares in practice across the week. Perhaps a little more optimism this week, but no guarantees just yet.
Good morning Stephania, Just wondering if you have any news on the status of (TE)Jermicael Finley, besides "questionable"? I have him & Boss (on a bye), so I might need to pick up a waiver in this short week (Thursday game). THX 4 your help!!
Good morning to you AJ: My sources tell me that Finley was progressing in rehab with his knee last week and that he could get on the practice field and make a push for Sunday. Although this does not give you a definitive answer, it's the most positive we've heard on him in a few weeks - but if you have to pick one up before Thursday, I probably would. Drop a flex low-grade player in his place.
Hey Stephania...whats the word on Vernon Davis?
Ippi: Davis has a little something with his shoulder - but the team does not seem overly concerned. Because of the short week, they were not required to issue an injury report Monday but they gave an "estimated" one which would have had Davis practicing on a limited basis. Tells me they expect to have him Thursday but will rest him in between.
Starphania ~ Loyal podcaster here. Is McFadden 100%? I know he's in a timeshare...but he sure has a tasty matchup this week (KC). Thinking about throwing him out there as my flex. Thanks!
Hi Tim: Thanks for downloading - and at least occasionally listnening! McFadden is not 100% - just returning to practice this week for the first time. That said, if he gets through an uneventful week of practice, they expect he'll play - but they are unclear as to how much they'll use him. I'm not sure he starts - they may ease him back into action. Need to look at your possible matchups to see where he ranks.
Hi Stephania! Well it was sad to see my Broncos loose, but Hines ward gave me a victory, so I lucked out I guess! I need a RB and was wondering if Darren Mcfadden is worth taking a look at or should I go with Ladell Betts with Portis's concussion. Is Portis's injury going to effect him down the stretch? Thanks! :)
Scott: So a little bitter with the sweet as they say...You saw my comment on MCFadden. I guess at least this week you know that Betts is the guy. The question becomes what happens going forward. And as you know if you've read my blogs in the past, concussions are a non-poredictable injury. Everything depends on how long it takes the symptoms to clear. So whether you have Betts starting for one week or three will be a week to week evaluation. But this week, he's the starter.
Stephania, how close it to a sure thing (Fantasy Focus: Football podcast winning People's Choice award) that Boldin will play vs. SEA.
Nathan: Love the confidence for the podcast (but everyone needs to get out the vote!!) - I would say that I'm leaning towards Boldin playing, but you know how that goes...the reason I think it's likely is that even though there was concern about Boldin's ability to finish a game (why he was held out), he did put in practice Friday and said his ankle felt better than it had in 3 weeks. So if he can actually prove that and practice this week, then he goes. They prefer him in the lineup (despite this week's results).
Hey Stephania, Is Clinton Portis a lock to be out of Sunday's game because of his concussion and normally how long is a player down with a concussion?
Cooper: Let me point out that the team lists him as Doubtful - meaning he has NOT officially been ruled out. I'm just extrapolating based on the fact that they gave him that label so early in the week. And no way of knowing how long to resolve.
Dearest Stephania, my league counts return points, so I was wondering what the status of Danny Amendola is? Will he still return kicks? He'll get a lot of opportunities against the Saints. Thanks!
Dan: Amendola has been cleared to return to play - was back in practice Monday and says he feels 100% - so yes, imagine he has all the same duties.
Hi Stephania, What's the latest on Anthony Gonzalez? Any chance he will be ready for Sunday night vs. the Pats?
Tom: No way. Gonzalez went under the knife to clean up some debris in his knee last week and is expected out at least a few more weeks.
Hey Stephania. You probably get asked more about Brian Westbrook than anyone else. Any chance you could just get his phone number so you can ask how he is feeling at any given time? BTW...how is he feeling?
Dave: That's funny. I am sure that for that exact reason he would never give it to me. Westbrook's status is complicated right now. Here's the deal. The team apparently held him out of practice Friday (after full practices Weds, Thurs) b/c he had swelling in the surgical ankle (no doubt after all the work earlier in the week). They said he had no headache. So we expected him to play. Now we are hearing that later Friday, after reports were issued, he did have recurrence of his headache -THAT was what kept him out (although we never heard that before gametime). So now the issue really is whether he stays clear of ALL headache symptoms as the week progresses. They will not let him play if there is even a hint of lingering head symptoms. The intermittent ankle swelling is to be expected and I doubt it would keep him out.
Any new news on Roddy White? Will he be a full-practice participant this week and good to go Sunday?
Cory: No word of any problems with his knee. While I can't tell you for sure that there will be full practice for him all week, I would expect it. I certainly expect him to play Sunday.
How serious is Austin Collie's neck injury? Is my refusal to cut Pierre Garcon finally going to pay off?
Mike: Not sure you'll see the payoff. Collie's injury doesn't appear too serious b/c he was able to return after he hurt his neck (making a catch late in the 4th q). Might see him rest early in the week - the Colts really can't afford to lose many more folks - but I expect he'll play this week unless he takes a turn for the worse.
Is Frank Gore's eye going to be an issue?
Chad: Sounds like it will not be an issue. While it pains me to even write about eye injuries, the fact that he took a poke in the eye and kept going just shows you how what a player he is. The team's "estimated" injury report would have had him as a full participant Monday - so sounds like not a big worry.
What's the deal with Lance Moore? Can I expect him to be back and productive this weekend?
Nathan: Saints saying they will not update his status (sprained ankle) until later in the week.
What is the word on Cooley, does he return this year or not???
Dave: If the team doesn't know, then I certainly don't. But I will tell you this. Best case scenario was return in Week 12. But even Cooley acknowledges concern that he could be placed on IR. The team is expected to update his status today or tomorrow - but I would not be surprised if the early excitement about him being out only 4 weeks was a little overhyped.
Since you haven't taken my JStew question does that mean I shouldn't worry about him going forward? He was unproductive against the Saints.
Jeff. Don't read too much into it. Just trying to spread the news around each team. Stewart I think just had a bad outing. There is no word that his limitations were a result of the injury flaring up. Doesn't mean that didn't happen - and they wouldn't likely announce that until later in the week. But based on what I've heard, that is not a concern right now.
Trade/Injury Help! Someone offered me Tony Gonzalez and Brian Westbrook for Dallas Clark. My other running backs are Portis, Kevin Smith, Cedric Benson and Ricky Williams. With Portis out now, will Westbrook make it back to contribute? Should I take the trade? Thanks!
CC: Would not touch it. Ryan seems to have lost the love for Gonzalez and Clark has the most fantasy points of any TE right now. Westbrook just too uncertain at this point. Go find a Jamaal Charles for another flex. You have two decent starters in Smith and Benson, with Williams also available.
Willie Parker still bothered? Is that why Mendenhall is playing so much or has Mendenhall taken over the starting position?
Jeff: Mendenhall was named the starter for the Steelers while Parker was recovering from the toe. Parker says he's better - but the Steelers have Mendenhall as their guy until further notice.
I saw your comments on McFadden, I was wondering if his uncertain status makes Fargas worth a play since he's been doing well?
Brain: I think so - b/c I still think Fargas sees more action until McFadden proves that he's really back.
This is not an injury question but I respect your overall football knowledge so I'll ask it. Bye Week Blues with Schaub and my choices are Freeman, Young, Edwards, Stafford and Henne - which is the dog with the least fleas?
Jim: I just loved the "dog with the least fleas" - that got you posted. And you are exactly right. My pick would be Henne facing Tampa Bay.
Jacobs OK? U think Felix is still not 100% back?
Mike: Jacobs is OK. I do not think Felix is 100% -but the team is not going to say that. In other words, he's healthy enough to play - decent;y - but I think the issue with the knee slows him just a step - and he's not as effective as he was pre-injury. Why do they not play Choice more? I just don't get it.
Stephania: Can I expect a near-100% Cotchery this week? Thanks.
Hi Mike: I think he's awfully close. The extended rest the Jets jsut got could only have helped his cause. Hard to say 100% when I can't test him myself - but everything on him trends upward.
You really think Ryan has lost the love for Tony? I'm pretty sure he's had more targets and catches than Roddy White the past two weeks.
James: Good point...Similar catch numbers with more yardage (except for one week) to White. One more TD for White. Granted, except for one major game White hasn't been utilized quite the same as he was last year - and the hit may partially come from Gonzalez, but until last week, Ryan had not delivered to Gonzalez in the end zone in a while...
Why do they allow women in the chatroom?
Same reason they allow you and anyone else who wants to participate...
It was evident that the Cowboys leaned on Marion Barber pretty strong the other night all the way until the end of the game. Do you think his quad problems are behind him? Can I trust starting him now and see less of the RB committee?
I'm not sure we can say that they are COMPLETELY behind him - but he makes a case each week for being further and further along in his recovery. And that's exactly what you would expect. I think he's a safe number one start.
I saw Cotchery on the field at the NC State game this weekend and he seemed to have a noticeable limp. Do near 100% hamstrings cause you to limp or just not allow you to push off with any burst?
Jeff: If you saw that, then that's a concern. There has been no word from the team about a setback - and of course we don't get much about their response to activity during a bye. We'll be watching practice closely - but if he's near full health, then no, he should not be limping.
Will Rodgers (Aaron) survive the year or is Rivers a better option the rest of the way?
Ed: In Vegas, setting the odds - would say that the odds are in favor of Rodgers making it through...but he'd better get some more protection soon. He is taking the lead in sacks in the league and there is no doubt that that threatens your QB's shelf life - but he's tough and I think he'll make it through.
Do you think the Redskins should shut Clinton Portis down for the rest of the season so that he can have the inevitable surgery to remove the bone spurs in his ankles? Isn't the recovery time from that kind of surgery quite long?
Tim: I don't think that's an automatic, despite the Redskins poor play, etc. As long as he can contribute during the season, and now with the head injury we'll see how that goes but I'm assuming he'll make it back, then they will keep him active and manage whatever symptoms they need to until season ends. And yes, it is a fairly slow recovery - remember Westbrook had a similar procedure in June, returned in September - and could have perhaps stood another few weeks off.
Just an interesting note about sacks and QBs: Last year Big Ben lead the league in sacks taken.
Brain: Good point - and I remember writing about it weekly and being concerned (remember he did have a scary spinal cord concussion as a result of all of that).
Stephania, I know this is an NFL chat, but can you let us know what dangers lie ahead for Jahvid Best after that horrible concussion on Saturday night? Thanks!
Jason: I was just thinking of him while answering the last post. It's really a day-to-day thing and given that he had another concussion just prior to this one, they will be exceptionally cautious with him. Very scary indeed.
C'mon this is not any easy question, why won't any of the fantasy experts answer me? pick one to trade: Turner, T. Jones, Rice? Desperately need WR help!
Aaron - b/c we need more info! Trade all depends on who you get for what you're giving up. I'm not a huge T Jones fan - but I still want to know who you're getting in his place. Of the 3 backs though, I'm inclined to give up Jones.
OK everyone - thanks for coming. Thanks to all of you who agreed that everyone (except the meanies) is welcome in the chat room. Great questions from all of you as usual. For the latecomers, there is Boldin info earlier in the chat if you want to check out the chat archive. I'll be posting a blog later today and again Thursday. See you back to chat Friday -same time, same channel. Have a great Monday!
Star, it is Tuesday...
And on that note....happy Tuesday. Thanks Tyler for setting me straight. I am disoriented by all of our football injuries...
