Chat with Calvin Watkins

Calvin Watkins
  (2:59 PM)

I'm here. What's up guys?

Dean Rosetti (OLYPHANT PA )

How Many sacks will the cowboys get on Rodgers....over or under 5???

Calvin Watkins
  (3:02 PM)

Pretty funny. I think the team will get about three sacks this week. Rodgers, despite the 37 sacks, does move around the pocket some so it won't be as easy as it sounds.

Mike (Jax, FL)

What do the Cowboy's need to focus on to ensure victories throughout the playoffs?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:04 PM)

Mike, they have to get to the playoffs first. Let's hold off on that playoff talk until they get there. The Cowboys have a good chance to be 9-2 going into December and since 1999 they haven't posted a winning record that month. Lots of football to play before the postseason.

Mike (Mississippi)

What's your take on rookie LB Victor Butler? He has 3 sacks and 1 forced fumble so far this season while playing in a very limited role and Anthony Spencer has yet to record a sack.

Calvin Watkins
  (3:07 PM)

Spencer is better vs. the run than Butler, plus he has more experience. Spencer's rush allowed Jay Ratliff to get a sack last week at Philly. It is rather odd that Spencer has no sacks, but he does have 16 QB pressures, tied for second with Stephen Bowen on the team. Spencer has also knocked down four passes. Now, Butler has some promise as a outside linebacker and did a nice job in getting his sacks vs. Carolina.

will the cowboys make the packers kiss the baby on sunday

Calvin Watkins
  (3:08 PM)

Take the Cowboys to win. It will be close, so does that mean, you still kiss the baby?

Don p. (lancaster)

do you think the cowboys should utilitize tashard choice more in the offense?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:09 PM)

I would like to see more of Tashard Choice in the run game. But the team used the Wildcat Formation four times vs. the Eagles with Choice and he scored a touchdown out of it. For now, Marion Barber is the lead dog with Felix Jones the backup.

Joe (Brick New Jersey)

Do you think the Cowboys will finally end there miserable streak of Horrid December play this season ?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:12 PM)

It will be tough. The first game in December is at New York. The game against the Giants could be like a playoff game. Then San Diego visits Cowboys Stadium and with the Broncos struggling, the Chargers could be on a hot streak. Then the Cowboys visit New Orleans and Washington. They could split those two games and then they close vs. the Eagles on Jan. 3. That might be for the division title. At best, the Cowboys have at least three wins on paper. But you never know.

Steve C. (North Las Vegas)

Why does Bobby Carpenter get so much PT with little results, Victor Butler has played exceptionally well given the amount of his PT. Am I the only one seeing this?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:15 PM)

Bobby Carpenter is the nickel linebacker and he's played pretty well this season. Is he a NFL starter? Not right now. I think Bobby is better suited for a 4-3 scheme than this one. Butler does a nice job when he's in the game, but he's not getting the PT due to Carpenter is just better. There's nothing wrong with that.

Josh (Kunsan Air Base, South Korea)

If Dallas meets Minnesota in the playoff, do you think Romo can out Farve...Farve...and lead the 'Boys to a victory?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:16 PM)

If the Vikings play the Cowboys in the playoffs, take the Vikings. I think Minnesota has too many weapons on offense for the Cowboys to contain. Now, will Romo outplay Favre? I doubt it.

odie (dallas)

hey this offseason can we trade Barber for picks/players? I love the guy but running backs hit the wall about his age and you have cheaper backups who are just as good...same thing with T Newman.

Calvin Watkins
  (3:20 PM)

Marion Barber is 26 years old. That's pretty young to have a starting RB. Now, running backs normally decline in their late 20s early 30s and Barber isn't there yet. Barber has been hurt the last two seasons and that's a concern long-term, but I don't believe you move him.Felix Jones, Barber's backup, has also been nicked up the last two years with toe, hamstring and now knee injuries. Newman, that's somebody I would really look at seriously, especially if you think Orlando Scandrick is ready to take over at CB.

Joe Garcia (Fresno, CA)

Calvin, if your the OC how do you get Austin the ball early and often considering that teams are now going to roll their coverages his way. I'm not saying force him the ball but there is no denying he is an explosive, fast, strong guy.

Calvin Watkins
  (3:21 PM)

Last week in Philly, the first pass of the game went to Miles. The Eagles rolled some coverage his way and he still got open. It was a matter of getting him the ball. I think the Cowboys offense is so good right now, that if Roy Williams and Tony Romo can continue their development, good things will happen to this unit.

Zach (Maryland)

Cowboys vs Steelers in Super Bowl, who wins?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:22 PM)

I'd take the 1970s Steelers teams over the 1990s Cowboys teams.

Vic M. (Kansas City)

How do you feel about Ken Hamlin and his play? Do you think that the biys will look to replace him first in the draft?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:24 PM)

Hamlin hasn't been consistent this season. Gerald Sensabaugh is having a better year than him. Hamlin's future is in doubt but its hard to replace him with a rookie or an unproven player. So, it's best to draft a safety next year and then keep Hamlin and see what happens.

Dallas (MD )

What's going on with Roy Williams, I know he's trying ot avoid the TO but its beginning to unfold that way a little bit.

Calvin Watkins
  (3:25 PM)

No, i don't think so. Roy is being honest. Sometimes we as reporters want subjects to be honest with their thoughts and then we rip them for it. You can't have it both ways. Roy is a smart guy who understands the media and how it works. I think he wants to contribute more to the offense and hopes to do so down the line.

Billy (Wichita Falls)

Who is going to step up on the offside away from Ware and put some sacks on the board..i know we have been close..but close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:27 PM)

Jay Ratliff, the way he's playing, four sacks this year, is headed to another Pro Bowl. He's a force at nose tackle for this group. He takes on double-teams almost every play. Now, Anthony Spencer, is providing pressure, but no sacks and that has to change especially when the games mean more.

Zach (Maryland)

What are you liking the most about the cowboys right now?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:28 PM)

When you talk to the players they say Wade Phillips is holding guys more accountable. That's been the best thing about this team. No egos, no outlandish statements. Just football, very business-like. Unlike last season.

Chad Hensley (Luray, VA)

Garrett's gameplan last week was one of the better one's in recent memory. That said, the Cowboys are built to be a smash mouth, establish-the-run first team. Why can't Garrett understand that? And please, don't give me the "we take what the defense gives us". That offense should be dictating what the defense does.

Calvin Watkins
  (3:31 PM)

Jason did have a nice game plan last week. he also called a good game, one of the best he's called this year. Saying that, the Cowboys have so many weapons Garrett has to choose from. So, the team can pass the ball just as well as runnning it. The Cowboys do have the third best offense in the league and the eighth best rush offense and sixth best pass offense. Pretty good.

m (british virgin islands)

If Wade wins one playoff game, does he keep his job?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:31 PM)

I would say so. But how many years do you extend that contract? Two more or three more?

Dean Rosetti (olyphant pa)

why wont Romo outplay Farve, he did before??

Calvin Watkins
  (3:32 PM)

Remember, Favre got hurt that game when Nate Jones sacked him on that corner blitz. Plus, I think Favre is on a bigger mission than last year.

JeffB (Dallas)

How can you say Wade holds peple accountable after the reported refute durign halftime by Wade of the Jay Ratliff taking responsibility. Wade is still too easy on players!!

Calvin Watkins
  (3:34 PM)

I think with the Ratliff thing, Wade knew there were other factors invovled, not just Ratliff, the inside backers should have came up with better support vs. the run.Ratliff is playing so well, I think Wade is like you're doing everything so well, don't be so hard on yourself.

jimbo (los angeles)

Calvin, when you look at the stats for the running game they are less than impressive. OL problem or mediocre backs?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:36 PM)

Was it ten years ago, the Cowboys rushed for 463 yards in consecutive weeks? Yes, the run game has struggled some, but not because of the offensive line. The backs are not 100 percent, Jones and Barber. Choice needs to get more carries, but Barber's carries in the fourth quarter vs. Philly are something to build on.BTW, that 463 was gained in Weeks two and three.

Calvin Watkins
  (3:37 PM)

Let's finish this Favre talk vs. the Cowboys.

Dean Rosetti (olyphant)

But I do Remember how bad Farve was playing up to that point!

Calvin Watkins
  (3:39 PM)

Favre did have a bad game that night. But I also remember Romo outplaying Peyton Manning, Eli Manning, Michael Vick, Donovan McNabb and a few others in his career. But the question was do I think Romo will outplay Favre in a playoff game in 2009? I said no. Now, I do remember that last game with Favre in Texas Stadium. Great night for football. But hey it happens.

Vic M. (Kansas City)

Where do you see the Cowboys in one year from now?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:41 PM)

Hard to answer that one Vic.It looks as if the team has locked up its core group of players for the future. They do have to make some key decisions regarding Miles Austin and Stephen Bowen. Can they win a Super Bowl now? December's efforts will answer those questions.

Calvin Watkins
  (3:42 PM)

I think Romo was always a good quarterback. He just had a spell where things didn't work out.

Calvin Watkins
  (3:43 PM)

Guys, it's been great, as always. Let's revisit this Favre-Romo thing next Friday. Take care.
