I'm in the middle of the Mountain West Conference call. We're going to go a few minutes late today. Please stand by. Thanks.
OK. Back. I might have to step away again for a couple minutes, but let's get this thing started.
Are you serious? You don't even have ECU going to a bowl game.. And what would be your reasoning behind that?
Yeah, that was just an oversight. It's been fixed. I have the Pirates in New Orleans and Marshall in EagleBank.
How much longer do you think Houston can pull of these crazy wins? Do you think that we will win out?
Houston has been charmed most of this season and I think that will continue. The Cougars are playing at a high level right now and with a lot of confidence. I think it will be tough to knock them off.
If TCU destroys Utah this weekend and wins out, while Texas loses a game, does TCU make the National Championship? Who else would deserve it over us?
I think TCU has a good chance, but I think Cincy is going to jump TCU before the end of the season. Cincy, if undefeated, has a better strength of schedule and will move ahead in the computers and likely the polls.
Do you think if TCU wins out and goes to a BCS bowl game, that Gary Patterson will stick around in Fort Worth or move onto another program?
I don't actually. GP has had some chances to move. He had a couple chances a year ago. It's going to be difficult to offer what TCU can offer. He makes nearly $2 mil a year, has a great recruiting area and if he can make the NC game? Why would he leave? Especially since the Mountain West is on the cusp of earning AQ status.
Thoughts on the Fresno State-Nevada game? Don't think I'd want to play either team right now.
Good call. Both teams are really playing well. It's really a toss up. I think Fresno is playing better defense, but that game will be a shootout.
Will ANYONE want the University of Memphis job?
I think they are going to get interest from some pretty decent names.
Graham! Huge BSU fan! Does BSU get into a BCS game this season if both TCU and BSU win out?
I've been told by many media folks that I have blind faith in the system because I think both will get in. Oregon's loss last week hurt, but if it can win the Pac-10 and go to a BCS bowl, i think it would be hard to justify taking a two-loss team over BSU especially since BSU will bring the fans, sell tickets and be an intriguing draw.
WKU fired David Elson, fair or foul?
Graham, can you shed some light on the determining factors that would slot a Non-AQ Team in a particular BCS Bowl game? As an example, assume TCU wins out, and finishes 3rd or 4th in the final BCS Ranking. I have seen Schlabach and Feldman?s projections, and Schlabach has TCU going (potentially) to the Fiesta Bowl, and Feldman has them at the Orange Bowl.
Sorry... Answer to the David Elson question... Fair. He lost 17 straight...
As for the BCS bowl question... It all depends on which teams fall where. Like, obviously the Rose Bowl is out because it has a contract with the Big Ten and Pac-10. But the rest of the bowls kind of discuss and decide who's going to take the non-AQ. It also depends who's in the NC. That's why there are different predictions. It's kind of too early to tell. But I think the Fiesta or Orange would be the most likely candidates.
Thoughts on the new uniforms the Frogs will be sporting Saturday night?
I think they're awesome. I love the Helmets. I might have to find someone to pull a post-Houston beat Texas Tech stunt for me...
What bowl will Temple be playing in and is Bernard Pierce freshmen of the year?
I assume you're talking nationally... I think he's up there. The Pitt RB is going to get some love too.
Wow, how does Mizzou lose at home to BAYLOR? Baylor? So, were the Chase Daniels years the peak, and now Mizzou is back to stinking year in and year out?
I didn't have high expectations for this year, but man, the Tigers are bad. I'd like to think they'll be better next year, but I can't get a read on it. The Baylor loss was kind of tough.
TCU only has 5 quarters of Jordan Wynn video... Does this help Utah?
I don't think it plays one way or the other. Honestly, I think it's more important that Jordan Wynn only has five quarters of playing experience and he's never faced a team like TCU. He told me yesterday that this was the biggest game of his life. Not knowing a lot about his life, I'd have to agree.
How do you think Freshman QB Jordan Wynn will perform against TCU's defense? And do you think Wynn is the right choice for the big game this weekend?
I think it's more about how the team plays around him, especially his line. If TCU gets to him early, it will be a long game. If he can get into a rhythm and get some confidence, I think he could have a pretty good outing. I also think Terrance Cain will play and I think his ability to scramble might be a bigger threat to TCU.
Hey Graham what do you think of Boise St. challenging any team for 2011 with a road game? Isn't this what the BCS wants from the non AQ's so if they are not taken up on the offer doesn't that give Senator Hatch more fuel to the fire to destroy the BCS? Because if no BCS school will schedule Boise St. that will unmask the BCS and show the Antitrust violations it has. Your thoughts?
I'm actually going to write something for the main CFB page on this today that should answer all your questions. Look for it this afternoon.
Just a heads up... Asking me a question 15 times does not mean I'll get to it sooner. It probably means I'll ignore it altogether.
Fresno State alum stuck here. Do you think the FSU/Nevada game is a bowl elimination game, or will Boise St get the BCS bid and the bulldogs will likely head to Hawaii, win or loss?
As I said early, my blind faith in the system makes me think Boise State, if undefeated, will get a BCS bowl bid. However, I don't think the Nevada-FSU game is an elimination game. There are going to be a couple at-large bowls out there that will be looking at those teams because of hot hot they've been most of the season.
Which 3 teams from a non-AQ conference would fit best for the MWC to make it into a 12-team conference? Houston, Rice, and SMU?
Rice and SMU? Really? No... Probably Houston, Boise and Fresno... But that's just for football. I don;t know a lot about the other sports at those schools.
Pitt needs a replacement home game in 2010 (not 2011). Tell BSU's AD to call AD Steve Pederson.
Boise State has two AQ opponents in 2010 - VT and Oregon State.
Graham, say Alabama loses in the Iron Bowl, but beats Florida in the SEC Championship game, would they still jump an undefeated UC? Or, vice versa, say Florida loses to Florida State but then beats Alabama, do you think they would be an undefeated UC (or TCU for that matter) to play an undefeated Texas?
That's a tough question. I think losing to this Auburn team is a tough loss. I think if that scenario happens, it's Cincy and Texas.
Should Colorado State fans be worried about this years difficult season?
I think the worrying should be over and acceptance put in its place. I don't think this year defines this team or Steve Fairchild. I think it will be fine.
You say the MWC is "on the cusp of earning AQ status." Do you really think that's going to happen in the foreseeable future? Why?
There's a set standard of criteria during the four-year evaluation period that would make a conference eligible for AQ status. I don't have exactly what it is in front of me, but I know it involves BCS bowls, Top 25 ranking and stuff like that. Again, this is two years down the road, but I think if the MWC makes another BCS bowl with another undefeated team, the BCS is going to have a tough time keeping the conference out.
If you had to give a "most improved non-aq team" award at this point, what teams would you consider?
Idaho and Temple would by far be at the top of that list. I think the list would be longer for most disappointing teams.
Who do you think Memphis will contact about there coaching vacancy?
I think there will be some high-level, currently unemployed, coaches on the list. Remember, and the Memphis Commercial Appeal reported this awhile back, that Memphis is trying to make a push into the Big East. It hired Mike Tranghese as a consultant. Obviously, this is more for basketball than football, but they need a coach that's marketable in that cause.
Can a school join more than one conference? (i.e. Notre Dame Basketball for the Big East and Notre Dame Football for the Big Ten.)
Yeah, several schools have sports that are in different conferences. It tends to happen more with Olympic sports where the number of teams are limited. Just look at the Big East in basketball compared to football.
Speaking of attaining AQ status, Utah AD Chris Hill mentioned Boise State as a possible addition to the MWC during a media roundtable a couple of weeks ago. Do you think that would be a good move for the MWC to make......
I don't think it's a bad move. I also don't think it's necessary for the MWC to get an automatic bid. In the short run, it would probably benefit Boise State more than the MWC because why would the MWC build its knockout pool up? Right now, TCU Utah and BYU already have to run a gauntlet between themselves to get to the BCS. Why add Boise State to that mix when the conference has proven that it's strong enough to surpass the WAC's Boise State in the standings with an undefeated record? It would be an unnecessary obstacle. When/if the conference achieves AQ status that might be when talks start up about expanding.
How many people will ESPN have at the TCU-Utah game? Particularly of interest because it's not on the ESPN family of networks...
At least three writers. Not sure after that.
what bowl is central going to there way go if they win the mac tiddle they shoulde be go to a good bowl game not the one in detroit
They've been to Detroit what? Four consecutive seasons or something like that? They might change it up and send them to GMAC. One way or the other it will be GMAC or Little Caesars.
Do you see the Pac-10 expanding in the near future, and if so what non-AQ teams would be the most logical choice to join the PAC-10?
I think Utah would be the only non-AQ team if there was expansion. Colorado might be the other choice.
You said you pick Marshall to go to the Eaglebank over UCF. I don't understand that pick. UCF beat them in the head to head, sure it was by one point but so was Houston's win over Tulsa. UCF has the easier schedule with Tulane and UAB coming up with Marshall having to worry about Southern Miss, SMU, and UTEP. I am not even sure they can get their last win to be eligible. UCF has the bigger fan base to travel to a bowl... Why do you like Marshall over UCF?
I misspoke. Marshall out and UCF in EagleBank. You're right, UCF does have an easier road than the Herd.
Since I would work for a tenth of what Dan Hawkins currently makes and I have JuCo coaching experience...could I be the next head coach for the Buffalos?
You should put your name in the hat. I bet you'd be considered.
Graham, do you have any thoughts about Gameday showing up at MWC games 3 out of the past 4 weeks, and passing up the BSU/Idaho opportunity this weekend?
Honestly, I'm not sure where the talk of Idaho/Boise came about. Idaho has been great this season, no doubt, but it's lost almost every good team it's faced. Plus, TCU/Utah is two ranked teams and both still have a shot at a BCS bowl. I didn't think there was any question.
SMU to Armed Forces Bowl or Hawaii Bowl?
Hawaii is going to try and get SMU because it needs June Jones to sell tickets. No other C-USA team will draw like he will. Armed Forces will get its draw from Air Force.
Graham, out of all the non-AQ teams, who else do you see getting a pink slip this season? Mike Price of UTEP might be one, but who else?
I think it's still early. Next week things will start to get clearer. Mike Sanford is up against it, JD Brookhart, a couple others... I made a post about it yesterday.
Hi Graham: you posted the pac-10 expansion question... BUT no ANSWER
Sorry. I said Utah would be the only non-AQ school. That and probably Colorado.
You fail to mention Idaho beat 2 MWC schools, SDSU and CSU.
Nope, didn't fail to mention it at all. Hardly the cream of the MWC crop. NIU was a good Idaho win, though.
Interesting. I'm just not sure June Jones wants any part of going back to the islands. They hate him there. But he may have no choice, because yeah, I agree he's the best C-USA draw.
He's been telling his team since camp that if they win six games they'll go to Hawaii. He wants to go back. His team wants to go. And I don't think they hate him there. Might be upset that he left, but I think they appreciate what he did for the program.
Wouldn't it make more sense to merge the MWC and the WAC and make it into a power conference?
Um, that would be called the WAC circa the 1990s.
Are there really rumblings about a Utah-Boise matchup (or maybe BYU-Boise) in the Humanitarian Bowl if the Broncos aren't in the BCS?
BYU-Boise in the Poinsettia maybe? I think Idaho might get the Humanitarian just because Boise will travel and it's Idaho's first bowl in forever. I don't think the Humanitarian will get a MWC rep this year. There probably won't be enough bowl eligible teams and I think they're fifth in the pecking order. It will be an at-large and which at large will determine which WAC team plays there.
Graham, Houston to the Big East or the MWC? We hope is not the MWC.
How would you figure Big East? That's way out of the Big East's range. Maybe Big 12, but that's a long shot. The only reason the MWC would come up is to give TCU a travel partner in other sports where teams play multiple games in one area.
Lets talk about the big MWC game this week with major bowl implications... SDSU vs. Wyoming. Who do you like?
I like SDSU actually. Throw out the TCU game and SDSU has been playing really well lately. Wyoming, not so much. Obviously, both teams are playing for a possible bowl berth, so I think this might be one of the better games of the non-AQ weekend.
Graham, Are you making it out this Saturday?
Hypothetical: Utah beats TCU. Does Utah get a BCS bid if they win out?
No. With one loss they won't move past Boise State, especially since that loss is to a team Boise State beat.
Utah will get exposed this weekend to TCU. Do you agree? Utahs offense has been really bad. If TCU can dominate a much better BYU offense please tell me they will do the same to Utahs offense.
I don't know. Utah has had TCU's number. I thought TCU would wax Utah last year. We saw how that turned out. I think this will be an interesting game.
All right. I have to get back to work. Thanks for the chat. Enjoy the games this weekend and I'll see you next week.
