Good Morning Sports Nation - Oh my - what a week for injuries. I feel like I have been tracking guys in every city around the clock since Sunday - and everyone's fantasy team seems to be impacted in one way or the other. Lots of people already here so here we go..
I have Benson as my starting RB. Do I have any concern or should I bench him and start Mendenhal this week?
Will: How's this for uncertainty? We're getting reports on two different injury situations for Benson and I am waiting to hear back from one of my sources (hope it happens during the chat and I will update). One is a hip flexor injury which can be highly variable ( some guys miss no time, Jerious Norwood has missed 4 games) depending on how badly injured. Team and Benson indicated he will play but you know how that goes...early projections don't always live up to expectations.
I had a feeling this would happen to westbrook so I traded for McCoy last week. just need to know if you think westbrook will be out for the rest of the season?
Brian: Lots of people speculating but there is really no way to make that kind of prediction with any accuracy. I will say this. I don't expect him to return soon. The scare of a second concussion may have an impact on the decision just as much as the actual medical consequences. This will be an ongoing conversation - but if he were on my fantasy team I'd look elsewhere.
Hi Stephania, I traded for Ronnie Brown last week due to his nice upcoming schedule. Should I be worried that he'll miss more than this week?
Stugots: You should be worried. He apparently has a foot sprain in addition to the ankle sprain - although the specifics around the foot have not been revealed (he was still undergoing further testing). THe foot injury could prove to be the more limiting of the two- and may cost him at least a few weeks.
based on the injury to julius jones, what do you see forsett's value being the rest of the season?
Nick: great fantasy question. Latest on Jones is a bruised lung (and possibly a cracked rib). Now we saw Andre Johnson come back the following week, but in Jones's case, if there's any concern about the rib injury putting the lung at further risk, then he will sit until the healing has progressed (meaning a few weeks). They already are calling him doubtful for at least this week. Forsett will face the Vikings this week so not a great matchup, but then they get much better - and he sure looked good last week. So if you can get him - and know what you're facing this week - hue could give you a couple weeks of good value.
Your thoughts on Jonathan Stewart...every week the achilles lands him on the injury report? On a short week with this nagging injury, do you think he'll be effective this week?
Brian: Yes - I think he'll be OK - although I don't think he will practice much beforehand. He looked good this past week and I think everything has been precautionary, but Williams still had more touches this past week, despite the knee - and may see increased carries again this week.
how bad is greg jennings injury? his production is already very poor should i be looking to trade him?
Rashard: Hearing it's a contusion (deep bruise) which may result in some missed practice time but not missed playing time. I'm not sure I'd trade him, still think he's seeing a decent number of targets.
Portis - are the Skins going to be weary of him given what happened to Westbrook?? I picked up Betts last week, and I'm wondering if you have a thought as to how much longer Portis might be out for.
Chris: Similar to Westbrook in that there is no predictive measure when it comes to head injuries. But Zorn saying yesterday that Portis is still experiencing some blurriness in his vision when moving his head quickly. Don't like the sounds of that at the start of the week - and they will be extremely cautious as they should be given the injury - so although they're not saying he's out yet, I don't expect him this week. That's all we can say right now.
Stephania, please take my question, this is 9th week since my questions have been answered.I have Turner, LT2 & Thomas Jones as my RBs, and yes I did bench LT last week. Now with Turner sure to miss this week, should I try and get Snelling or Forsett from the waivers or roll with LT2 and Thomas Jones ? Thanks
OK CM: 9th week is the charm. For reasons mentioned earlier I like Forsett, but not this week. Snelling will compete with Jerious Norwood if he returns (and they're hoping he can this week although decision not yet made) and if Turner does return within a couple weeks, Snelling drops off.
Your thoughts on Orton's injury? Didn't he do this last year also? How did it work out for him when he came back early?
Cindy: Great memory. It was his right ankle last year, now it's his left. Last year was a high ankle sprain and he returned quickly but as you recall was very gimpy, not especially effective early. McDaniels is acting very upbeat that they will see how Orton looks this week but they are going to try to get him ready. Based on Simms' performance they WANT him ready. He may be able to go, but expect that he will be limtied mobility-wise. Being his left ankle it oculd affect his downfield throws as he tries to step into them.
Anything on the mysterious Polamalu injury?
Tim: Not so much mystery as to what happened (re-injured his MCL reportedly) but the mystery is in the severity. Sounds like he will miss this game but we don't know how much longer.
I was wondering how severe Michael Turner's injury was and if he will miss any playing time.
Kevin: This is the million dollar question. Originally reported as an injury that "could be serious" but then coach SMith says it's definitely not season ending. The team unwilling to say that he's sitting this week out - but reports are that he has a high ankle sprain. We know these typically take longer to recover from but still it's a matter of degree. I would expect that he misses this week. Beyond that it's hard to say until we see if he does anything to work the ankle this week. Most guys will miss at least two to three weeks as RB with a high ankle sprain, at least.
SB: When should we expect to hear about Ronnie Brown's injury(s) with some certainty? I too traded for him last week, ugh.
Matt: Probably not until later today or tomorrow - and that's not with certainty. Adam Schefter just now reporting that there appears to be some concern in Miami about his long-term availability and that he's still on crutches. Tells me there may be concern about a Lisfranc injury which even if non-surgical could be a multi-week serious injury.
Megatron! He looked like he was as close to 100% as he's been in a while. Thoughts?
Mike: He did look better than he has in a while. While I might not put him at quite 100%, I think he's getting healthier - but with Stafford struggling it does impact him.
Any lingering issues with Kevin Smith? I'd love to start him over Megatron in my Lions Flex posiiton (not really, but those are my choices).
Adam: I'm not sure I would. Smith has still not looked explosive at all. Seems to be struggling and I'm not overwhelmed -s till think his shoulder may be an issue under the radar as well.
Any news on Cooley? Is he worth stashing for the playoffs?
Mike: If you have room on your bench right now, might be worth hanging on one more week. Cooley recently had his ankle re-evaluated and is expected to increase his rehab work, with the hope he can get back for Week 12. Now this is early. Just because he starts rehab doesn't mean he's game ready in 2 weeks, but it's a possibility at least.
Hi Stephania, Steve Smith (CAR) rib injury. Any word on this? Thanks.
Drew: Appears not to be an issue heading into THursday's game.
Sammy Morris? Fred Taylor? What can we expect from the Pats backfield?
Mack: Morris was back in practice last week recovering from a sprained MCL. If all goes well this week he appears to be on track to return this week. As far as Taylor, no definitive news but rumors are that they hope he returns to practice in the not too distant future. To me he still sounds a few weeks away - and his injury was more complicated.
Hello Stephania, What do you think about Felix Jones? He does not look like his speedy self. Also you didn't answer the question about Megatron. Thanks.
Tim: Megatron question answered but you may need to hit refresh. As far as Jones, I have said before that these PCL injuries are tougher to come back from and guys look a step slower for a while, if not for the whole season. Jones stopped wearing his brace in practice - and said he would not wear it in the games - but he is wearing it (and I think smartly) in the games. THese guys often feel the brace though and feel it slows them down a bit - which it may - but it's a risk-reward issue and they don't want to risk more serious injury. Don't think it changes a ton for at least a few weeks.
Stephania, you touched on the Panthers backs earlier. Does the "tweak" in DeAngelos knee seem to be something that us fantasy owners built up to be more than it actually turned out to be? Do you think he'll be off the injury report this week?
Randy: No - I think the fact that he got worse before Friday after working Thursday made it a legit concern. But as we saw from his number of touches, he functioned OK - and although can't say he'll be off the report, it looks as if he's better heading into Thursday's game.
Steph, you killed me on Sunday with your breaking update about Fed Ex field and advising to pull Betts from your line-up. I switched him for Bell and lost by 1 pt....I dont blame you but CMON!! Is Betts gonna start this week, what Portis' status?
Matt: Betts killed all of us. Look - keep in mind that I never say "pull himk from your lineup" - but I did say that I had concern about his foot (true), that as of Friday he only rated himself 75% (true), that foot injuries are more complicated than lateral ankle sprains for running backs (true) and that the field was very soggy (true). Also, that Zorn said that Cartwright and Ganther were going to get plenty of reps(true that he said it, but turned out to be false). So given all of that, I have to admit to being very surprised at what Betts pulled off. It happens.
I took out Betts and replaced him with Bell also and , I switched Kolby Smith for Jamal Charles. What happened?
Billy: Now I didn't talk about the Smith/Charles situation, but I will tell you that sources on the ground in KC also told me that they expected to see Smith get more touches, etc, etc. SMith was coming off a serious injury and extensive rehab - and maybe they just decided to hold back, especially when Charles looked good.
The Bengals officially say Benson is limited with a abductor strain. What exactly is that?
Hi. You touched on the fact that there are 2 Benson injury possibilities but only told us about the hip flexor. What is the other? More serious than the hip?
OK - this answer is for RYan and Mike: The hip abductor strain (what we're hearing now) is another muscle around the hip - actually on the lateral (outer) side of the hip. Helps with lateral movement but more importantly with stability at the pelvis, i.e. controlling stability at the hip/pelvis when on one leg, which happens a lot when you run. Either way, muscle strains at the hip can affect power, stability, directional movement, etc and if he doesn't look solid this week in practice, they may give him a week to rest. Right now they're hopeful, but it's early.
Steph - I'm going to need to make a decision on M. Turner before the weekend, as my alternative to him is Jonathan Stewart who plays Thursday. What do you think? Is Stewart a safe enough play or should I gamble on Turner?
Stephania- Great call on FFN Sunday morning saying you thought Stewart would be more productive than Williams. Went with your advice and Stewart's TDs got me my win!!! Thanks. Also, I got Marshall on my team and am wondering if I should bench him if Orton is out. I got Hester on the bench and think he has a better chance of being productive than Simms (or an injured Orton) throwing to Marshall. THANKS!
Stewart! I don't care what they're saying or not saying in Atlanta, i really don't expect him to play.
Bob: Nice to get the love in addition to the, well, less than love...I would not bench Marshall. I still like him better - and I do believe they will do everything possible to get Orton on the field.
Starphania, How is McFadden's return to health looking and should I dump Fargas this week?
Spaz: Do not dump Fargas yet - although, you may have a bit of a problem in a timeshare - but I don't think it happens this week. McFadden is being eased back in after knee surgery - and you need proof that he can really return to 100% and be productive. For now Fargas will still get the bulk of the work.
Time for the weekly update on Anthony Gonzalez. Why do Some of us still have him on our team?
Dane: Really - can't help you there since I told you I dropped him weeks ago. No news here - still recovering from knee surgery.
Steph, Barber saw a lot fewer touches last week than I expected. Anything to be concerned about.
Ken: No - think it was a function of them needing to pass - and a bit of a dysfunctional running game in that it's getting spread all around.
Stephania, with LT2s performance Sunday is he worth a pickup now? Was this just a product of the media knocking him all week or is this a fluke week?
Jeff: I think he heard us knocking him. Would love to be wrong - but think it was more of a fluke performance.
OK everyone - thank you so much for coming. Great questions all around - hope to have more updates in the blogs this week and when we chat again Friday. Hope to see you back here then!! Have a great week!
