Chat with David Thorpe

David Thorpe
  (12:02 PM)

What a week for rookies, and for the NBA in general. Lots of questions already. I'm listening to an Itunes opera station and I'm ready. Sorry in advance for any tech issues. Keep hitting refresh."He has no business being out there. No business. Nooooo!!!!".

Ludwig (Germany)

can hawes be okur#?

David Thorpe
  (12:03 PM)

Literally, I can not think of a bigger myth being perpetrated onto the NBA fans than the one that suggests that Hawes can shoot the 3 ball. He's 0-13 this year, and is a career sub-30% shooter. Can he be good one day? Sure, but that day is far off.

Alex (Dallas, TX)

Did you see Thabos Sefolosha pick Wades pocket and take it coast to coast? Hopefully Thabos starts to get some national attention--he has to be in consideration for best wing defender right?

David Thorpe
  (12:04 PM)

You are exactly right. I've been a fan for years.

Glenn (Memphis)

David ? Would a freshman get better instruction on fundamentals at a top college program or Europe? Brandon Jennings development makes me ask this question.

David Thorpe
  (12:05 PM)

It's not an either/or question. It depends on the kid and the program/franchise. But we do know this; the NCAA does not have anything close to a monopoly on player development.

David Thorpe
  (12:05 PM)

And if I suddenly disappear in a fiery car accident, you'll know whom to question.

Jay (San Diego)

Hey Mr. Thorpedo. Any chance AI will be in a championship caliber team? Let's say the Cavs or Magic? Thanks!

David Thorpe
  (12:06 PM)

I do think that's a chance. Some teams have the structure and foundation to handle him.

Shai (Israel)

How amazing has Jared Dudley been for the Suns off the bench? The guy just seems to work harder than anyone on the floor.

David Thorpe
  (12:06 PM)

Yes he does. As I've written here many times, energy is a talent.

Charlie (ATX)

So after the Bucks/Mavs game who do is faster, Beaubois or Jennings?

David Thorpe
  (12:07 PM)

My guess is Jennings is quicker, Roddy B faster.

Brian (Chicago)

Whats up with Derrick Rose? Do you think his recent slump is just because of his ankle tendon injury or is there more to it than that?

David Thorpe
  (12:08 PM)

He looks like a stiff out there now, instead of the player with a rocket engine in his backside we saw all last year. He must be in pain. Ankle injuries are no joke to a player who uses quickness to score.

Kantad (NYC)

Coach Thorpe,I guess that injuries happen every year, it just seems like this year is particularly bad - would you agree? I think the championship may come down to whose less hurt.

David Thorpe
  (12:08 PM)

They often do-pro sports is always a war of attrition.

John (Seattle)

I hear alot of hooplah the last couple of days about the Hawks now being contenders because they started 9-2. Is it too early to be jumping on the bandwagon? They might be better than expected, but there's no reason to think that they can beat three out of the four elite teams in the playoffs.

David Thorpe
  (12:09 PM)

I disagree, as long as Josh Smith is playing like this, and Crawford too.

Justin R (St. Cloud, MN)

The Timberwolves clearly need a scorer at either the 2 or 3, do you see them addressing that issue in a trade during the season or more so in the offseason, like the draft or a FA?

David Thorpe
  (12:10 PM)

Yes I do, once Brewer goes back to the SF spot and AJ recovers, they'll have those 2 plus Flynn/Sessions at pg. Those r good pieces to build around.

Jeff (Philippines)

Who's your top 5 MVP frontrunners right now? Tnx!

David Thorpe
  (12:11 PM)

My man Maurice Brooks does that for us, and he's way smarter than me on that front. He posted his first "Awards watch" this week-check it out.

Erich (PR)

So, feelings on Eric Maynor? He's gold Jerry! Gold!

David Thorpe
  (12:11 PM)

He certainly was against Cleveland. I do like him a lot.

Knicksfan (New Jersey)

Wish we had jennings.

David Thorpe
  (12:12 PM)

You are not alone.

Mark (Cleveland, OH)

What are your thoughts on JJ Hickson's development?

David Thorpe
  (12:13 PM)

I think it's a good idea.

David Thorpe
  (12:14 PM)

Kidding (I was channeling the late John McKay). He's always been a talented youngster. Great to see him playing well.

David Thorpe
  (12:15 PM)

One quick sidenote-Sam Amick, the terrific beat writer for the Sacramento Bee, lost his dad last night. I don't know the details, but Sam is a great pro and represents his company, family, and this business incredibly well. He's one of the best men I know. So for those of you that do this kind of thing, please send your prayers to him and his family. Thanks.

Bob (Chicago, IL)

Which team is the most disappointing to watch this season (from a b-ball fundamentals standpoint)? Thanks for the chats

David Thorpe
  (12:16 PM)

Nets and Knicks, I'd say.

Jay (Philippines)

Any thoughts on Manny 'PACMAN' Pacquiao as the best pound for pound boxer ever. Salamat(Thanks)!

David Thorpe
  (12:16 PM)

I stopped watching boxing in 1983, when my Papa died. Have not seen a punch since.

Nick (New Jersey)

Hey, Chad Ford tweeted that Brandon Jennings is the next Allen Iverson..what are your thoughts on this? is his talent's ceiling that of AI? really???

David Thorpe
  (12:17 PM)

I see some similarities, but BJ reminds me more of Isiah Thomas.

Michael (Germany)

Hello David,do you think the lakers will make a move?Something like Morrison (ending contract) for Duhon?

David Thorpe
  (12:17 PM)

I do expect them to make a move, but not for awhile.

Kyle (Ocoee, Fl)

Do you think Jodie Meeks (miluakee) should have stayed in college 1 more year?

David Thorpe
  (12:18 PM)

No-he's in the NBA and doing fine. Tough to second guess him now.

Joe (Davis)

David, do any NBA players know how to use a ball screen any more?

David Thorpe
  (12:18 PM)

Most of the vets do, and I've been impressed with Jennings in this area.

JD (NY)

David, when is Courtney Lee gonna be back on the court?

David Thorpe
  (12:19 PM)

I heard this weekend.

Tom (MN)

How do you view Jonny Flynn as a player so far in the NBA and where can you see him taking his career?

David Thorpe
  (12:20 PM)

I like his game, but I always saw him as a terrific energy guy off the bench. Sure he can start for some teams, but I never saw him as a playoff caliber starter at pg. I still don't, but I may be wrong, of course.

Logan (Tulsa, OK)

Whats up thorpedo? I know you must have at least 100 versions of this question on here, but I'll ask anyway. Do you think that Orlando would consider bringing in AI considering Nelson will miss a huge chunk of time? I say if he's REALLY willing to do whatever it takes to win and won't disrupt things.... why not?

David Thorpe
  (12:20 PM)

It's possible.

Ian (Tampa)

While I admire Nash, how crazy would it be if he won MVP this year? He'd have more MVPs than Shaq and Kobe combined! How does that happen?

David Thorpe
  (12:21 PM)

Nash deserves more than admiration. He's one of the best pg's to ever play, and he's in a system designed to utilize his extraordinary gifts.

big jase (atlanta)

can the hawks get some love now!!!!!! please!!!!!!!!

David Thorpe
  (12:22 PM)

I'm thinking loving thoughts about them now-are you happy?

Dan (Delray Beach FL)

Would you do an article (or maybe even a book) on "How to watch basketball on TV? Your insights are rarely ppinted out by the announcing crews.

David Thorpe
  (12:23 PM)

The book I am working on now should be able to help. I'll keep everyone informed on its' progress.

Venkat (India)

Now that the Kings have Tyreke Evans do you think they will trade Kevin Martin to the Pacers for some of their expiring contracts?

David Thorpe
  (12:24 PM)

I think it's possible that Kevin could get traded once he's healthy, but we're far from that now. Too early and I'd guess they want to see if Evans and Kev can excel together. But Martin was averaging 30ppg and just had a 29 and 11 game (with a broken wrist), so I'd think the Kings would want more than expiring deals.

josh (la)

Why does dirk get no love on ESPN? if lebron or kobe were putting up the huge 4th quarter clutch numbers dirk has been putting up, it would be all over espn 24/7

David Thorpe
  (12:25 PM)

He was.

mike (springfield, ma)

Rubio still over Jennings?

David Thorpe
  (12:27 PM)

It's hard to say that now, of course. But Rubio is playing extremely well in Spain, other than his shooting. His team is undefeated in the Euroleague, and one game out of first place in the ACB. He's the youngest starting pg by far. How's this for a pg line-no points, 10 assists, 6 steals, and the top 6 players on their team besides him scored in double figures and hit 50% of their shots, or better.

Orin (Oakland, CA)

I wonder how Anthony Randolph feels about lazy journeyman Vlad Rad starting over him immediately.

David Thorpe
  (12:28 PM)

The latest in a long line of sleights.

Pierre (Paris)

Your thought on Beaubois ? He is amazingly productive in very limited minutes. Could he get more minutes ?

David Thorpe
  (12:28 PM)

Dude is real, may be special.

Ethan (ATL)

What do you think of Earl Clark so far in limited time? can he be an elite defender?

David Thorpe
  (12:28 PM)

He's been bad. Lost a little. But yes, he can be a great defender.

mike (springfield, ma)

The point guards taken in the first round have been really impressive. Who would you take first of the point guards in retrospect? Still Rubio over Jennings?

David Thorpe
  (12:29 PM)

Depends on how your team is built. Jenning is the far superior scorer. Rubio is better at running a club. Seems like Jennings will get there though as a leader.

Kenny (Houston)

Coach, the Pacers 5-game winning streak is under the radar. I know they have mainly beat crappy teams (and Boston), but someone has to notice the great play of Roy Hibbert. Your thoughts?

David Thorpe
  (12:30 PM)

Totally agree. Hibbert, though, is playing now about as we expected. I've been a big fan for years.

MB (United States of Hoops)

Coach, thanks for friending me on facebook. For those of you who like him, he is at David B. Thorpe on facebook. if you don't like him, please stay away.

David Thorpe
  (12:31 PM)

Indeed, and you are welcome. Yes, please don't ask to be a friend if you just want to trash me.

Disco Stu (Chicago)

Why does Nelson play Moore over Randolph?

David Thorpe
  (12:31 PM)

Disco, I wish I knew.

Stansfield (NYC)

Do you like Danny Granger playing power forward?

David Thorpe
  (12:32 PM)

In spots, absolutely.

Dale (Atlanta)

David, I know people respect you for how much you stand for family and your integrity. No one tells it like it is better than you. Here's my non-basketball question-I've been dating a woman for a few years and I want to marry her. How do I feel out her feelings before popping the question?

David Thorpe
  (12:34 PM)

I have no idea. I started dating my wife in October of 1987. I told her I wanted to grow old with her on Halloween night of that year. A few weeks later I think she started to feel the same way. For you, just be natural and open. Life gets tough as you get older, and having a trusted partner makes it a much easier and more joyful journey.

ray philly [via mobile]

do you see the 76ers being able to move brand or dalembert

David Thorpe
  (12:34 PM)

Sure.

Vincent (DC)

Is this finally the year for Andray Blatche? Looks good so far.

David Thorpe
  (12:35 PM)

We all hope so.

Paul (Denver)

Does Earl (JR) Smith look like he's starting to play more of an all-around game this year?

David Thorpe
  (12:35 PM)

Without doubt.

tim (dallas)

do you think if a rookie coach opted to trot Vlade Rad and Mikki Moore out as his starting PF/C, that management would just burn his contract as the halftime show???...what a complete (and terrible) joke...I'm at a loss..can you help???

David Thorpe
  (12:36 PM)

I can not, other than to recommend the season DVD's of "The Office".

Jordan (Transylvania)

This isn't LOVELINE! Prescribe a cure for the Warriors PLEASE!?!

David Thorpe
  (12:36 PM)

All I can say is, if the NBA had a "Gong Show" format, the Warriors would be gonged.

The Kid (Hartland, WI)

Hi David, it's The Kid. I was wondering when your updated Rookie Rankings would be availble. Thanks!

David Thorpe
  (12:37 PM)

Shortly.

Keary (DUMBO, Brooklyn)

Coach Thorpe: Is Lou Williams progressing well as a PG in the Princeton offense or still a work in progress? Thanks. -K

David Thorpe
  (12:38 PM)

I've not seen them lately, so I'll look out for them this week. What do you think?

Eric (Sac)

Parenthood!

David Thorpe
  (12:38 PM)

Yes! And an ode to little league baseball. My team has two games left on our schedule.

Brett (ATL)

Dale from Atlanta needs to forget about the girlfriend and get down to Philips so we can have some real crowds to watch an elite team.

David Thorpe
  (12:39 PM)

Why not bring the girl?

SteveFitz (Cicero, IL)

Thoughts on CDR's recent play? This good or playing over his head on a bad team?

David Thorpe
  (12:39 PM)

Not very efficient is he?

Freddy (Los Angeles)

Why doesn't Jrue Holiday get much playing time?

David Thorpe
  (12:39 PM)

?????

David Thorpe
  (12:39 PM)

?????

Brian (Indianapolis)

do you think the pacers have a chance of making the playoffs and is it possible we could make some trades to get another scorer to help granger

David Thorpe
  (12:39 PM)

Yes and yes.

Jonathan (Dallas)

I know he's not at the top of your rookie rankings yet, but Roddy Beaubois has to impress you so far right?

David Thorpe
  (12:40 PM)

Oh yea. He's going to be a long-time starter.

brian (paradise)

Ryan Anderson for most improved player

David Thorpe
  (12:40 PM)

No, but he's in the mix.

Ludwig (Germany)

can tyreke be a 'defensive player of the year' caliber player?

David Thorpe
  (12:41 PM)

Not at all, based on what I've seen. But he shows good in spots. Still a long way off as a helper.

Will (Denver)

You're answers might be short but you're so insightful! I really can see why ESPN pays you to do this...

David Thorpe
  (12:42 PM)

Do I detect sarcasm?

Miguel (State of Golden-ness)

Shouldn't Randolph have to earn his minutes? He is talented, but raw and makes a lot of mistakes?

David Thorpe
  (12:42 PM)

Check out his production.

Dan (Delray Beach FL)

When is Chris Paul able to extract himself from New Orleans?

David Thorpe
  (12:43 PM)

I think this is the biggest elephant in the room. He's the best pg on the planet, and he's rotting(sort of) in NO.

Dave (Phoenix)

MOst Improved Player - Channing Frye?

David Thorpe
  (12:44 PM)

He's higher on the list than Anderson.

Charles (San Jose)

CDR has a true shooting percentage of .550. How is that not efficient, especially on a terrible team?

David Thorpe
  (12:44 PM)

Agreed. That is solid. But I'm not convinced he's starter material on a good team. Sorry.

Dan (Delray Beach FL)

Even playing the triangle, with its disavowal of a true point guard, don't the Lakers need a defensive presence faster than Fisher and more skilled than Farmar? Anyone out there that they could pick up to fill the need?

David Thorpe
  (12:45 PM)

You mean because they can't win a title with those guys?

Will (Denver)

Sarcasm and a little bit of jealousy! I am sitting in 18th century American lit right now...

David Thorpe
  (12:45 PM)

Well, if it makes you feel better, I volunteer to do these chats.

Shawn ((La Habra))

Bulls desperately need a 2 guard who can shoot. Lack of shooters is hurting their fg%. I think they made a huge mistake by not selecting Wayne Ellington. What's your take?

David Thorpe
  (12:46 PM)

Dying for a shooter, yes. Ellington looks to be a good one, but he's not there yet.

Jordan (Toronto)

Is DeMar Derozan ceiling Andre Iguodola? Rob Babcock set up back 5 years with his drafting! We are now just catching up, not to mention Bryan Colangelo's moves, which are suspect at best...Raptors could be sporting a lineup of Roy, Iguodola, Granger, Villanueva and Bosh.....ARGHH

David Thorpe
  (12:47 PM)

That's too high a ceiling, I'd guess.

Simon (UK)

is it possible that if CP3 demanded a trade..say over the summer, he'd be LeBrons perfect running mate in Cleveland?

David Thorpe
  (12:47 PM)

He's everyone's perfect running mate.

Younger (Cali)

If you had an opportunity to work with any young nba player who would it be?

David Thorpe
  (12:49 PM)

My mind can not work that way. I love working with about anyone. But, I think I'd be able to help Oden a great deal. He's making very good progress without me, though, that's for sure.

chris (ct)

can you be any more transparent?!?!?!?! CDR > YOUR BOY C. LEE. and its not really close. cant believe people cant see through your hidden agenda.

David Thorpe
  (12:50 PM)

Actually, I see them both playing together. CDR is more a 3 in my book, and he's a better slasher than C Lee, so they would play well together. Right now, C Lee is not a starting caliber player either. He's struggling.

Aaron (LA)

The NBA has always been a league dominated by the big men. Now it seems like quick point guards (Jennings, Rose, CP3, Lawson, etc.) are the wave of the future. How do you see this playing out in the next few years?

David Thorpe
  (12:51 PM)

I think it's always been more balanced.

Ryan (OKC)

Looking back, who do you think the Thunder should have selected at #3 in the last draft?

David Thorpe
  (12:52 PM)

Harden will be a great fit. But Jennings would have been terrific next to Westbrook and KD.

David Thorpe
  (12:53 PM)

Jennings and Westbrook both need the ball in their hands a lot, which is surely the reason Presti did not select him, or Evans I'd guess.

carlos (Mexico)

True or false: Hasheem thabeet will redefine what we know as a bust.

David Thorpe
  (12:53 PM)

Not redefine. But he'll be on that list.

chap (switzerland)

who is the best passer not playing the point guard position in the league?

David Thorpe
  (12:53 PM)

Bron.

barry (florida )

Im a Cavs fan but Im sick of hearing about James going here, James going there, James playing football, James doing this, James doing that. Is there nothing else going on in the NBA that the media is only creative enough to to talk about James for the entire season?

David Thorpe
  (12:54 PM)

Ask Bron, he brings it up all the time.

Disco Stu (Chicago)

You going to see New Moon this weekend? Wife is dragging me to it

David Thorpe
  (12:54 PM)

Vampires scare me, so no.

juan (la selva beach)

10 games into the season. Any surprises?

David Thorpe
  (12:55 PM)

Pacers.

nick (slc punks)

Who's the one player with the ugliest game but is still a great player?...now and all time

David Thorpe
  (12:55 PM)

Chuck Hayes is terrific. So was Kurt Rambis.

Merrill (Palatine, IL)

Coach, have you ever seen my show?? I do a great impression of Shaq and Joakim Noah!

Jon (Davidson, NC)

Can Steph Curry still be in the conversation with Jennings, Rubio, and Lawson for best pg in the class. He's been a bit passive since regular season started, but he still has the best feel and is the bst shooter. What do you think?

David Thorpe
  (12:56 PM)

It will be tough in that environment. He still is going to be good.

David (Miami)

What's up with beasley not finishing drives? It seems like every game he gets 3 shots blocked... Please help him!!

David Thorpe
  (12:57 PM)

I might rank him #1 disappointment.

Jeff B (Jacksonville FL)

Is Andrew Bynum better then D12?

David Thorpe
  (12:57 PM)

No.

chap (switzerland)

do you think jennings will cool off shooting wise or why was everybodies impression he cant shoot?

David Thorpe
  (12:58 PM)

Yes I do. No chance he stays above 50% from 3. But he could stay above 40%, which would be terrific.

mike (springfield, ma)

Will Oden ever become an all-star?

David Thorpe
  (12:59 PM)

Yes.

tim (chicago)

if you could do a draft do over how would it go? blake jennings.....?

David Thorpe
  (12:59 PM)

I'm not ready to answer this now, but it will make for a good rookie report later.

David Thorpe
  (1:00 PM)

Time to go. Thanks for 1000 questions. My rookies should be up now or soon, and I think we'll be starting a soph report this Friday. So look for it. I'll tweet and Facebook an update on it. Have a great end of the week and be safe. Love to the Amick family!
