Chat with Mel Kiper

  (1:01 PM)

We've got Mel!

Ken (CA)

Mel, How many starters on the Gator D will be playing on sunday in the next 2-3 yrs? Or is the easier question who won't be?

Mel Kiper
  (1:03 PM)

The young kids are still developing. Carlos Dunlap, the junior DE and Joe Haden, the junior CB are the two best defensive players. They're both first round picks. After that, you have Jermain Cunningham. Brandon Spikes. Those are your main entities. There are a lot of young guys too.

Mike (San Francisco)

Who are the best rush linebackers available who won't also be overmatched to play the run in the NFL?

Mel Kiper
  (1:04 PM)

Jerry Hughes, TCU. Sergio Kindle, Texas. Eric Norwood, S. Carolina. Ricky Sapp, Clemson. Brandon Graham, Michigan, could be a 3-4 OLB.

Collin (Ontario, OR)

Mel, I know Kellen Moore doesn't have the body of an NFL qb etc. but it just seems like he is too talented to be ignored at the next level. Do you think he will ever get a shot in the NFL?

Mel Kiper
  (1:05 PM)

Chase Daniel had a chance. Graham Harrell has not had that chance yet. He's up in the CFL. It's hard for QBs. Some of these guys who put up great numbers in college aren't getting the chance. He's put up great numbers, but as an NFL prospect, it's iffy.

Danny (Albany, NY)

Both of these guys make explosive plays week after week, but who will be the better pro Jordan Shipley or Golden Tate?

Mel Kiper
  (1:06 PM)

Shipley, right now, slightly over Tate. Tate's issue is that he doesn't get a lot of separation. Shipley has explosiveness out of his break. Tate makes a lot of great catches in traffic. He's made a lot of explosive plays, but he doesn't have it out of his break. Shipley has the return skills as well.

Aaron (St. Louis)

Mel what is your thoughts on Blaine Gabbert future with Mizzou and his future stock in the NFL.

Mel Kiper
  (1:07 PM)

He's got to keep developing. He's been banged up this year and hasn't been 100% in some games. You saw what Chase Daniel did in that offense. Gabbert has had Alexander to throw to. He has a chance. It's amazing to see he and Ryan Mallett. Mallett was at Michigan and Gabbert was supposed to go to Nebraska. Both have size.

Will J (Portland, OR)

Mel, what's your take on the team formerly known as USC? I see another rebuilding season next year as well.

Mel Kiper
  (1:09 PM)

We automatically assumes that the top teams can reload. It's not that easy, easy especially when you lose guys like USC did. Oklahoma is in the same situation. Oklahoma had it worse because of the injuries on top of the guys they lost. USC has also had some guys miss games with injuries. What they become is a shell of the team they were in August. Certainly Oklahoma was and USC to an extent has as well.

Mike (San Francisco)

Derrick Morgan seems to be flying up draft boards. Do you think he has the potential to play standing up in a 3-4 or is he strictly a 4-3 end?

Mel Kiper
  (1:11 PM)

He's a 4-3 end all the way. He's 270. The 3-4 guys are Jerry Hughes, Sergio Kindle. It's like asking if Freeney is a 3-4 OLB, no he's a 4-3 end. Mathis as well. You don't just pigeon hole a guy because he doesn't have great size. I look at this case and say that same thing.

Mel Kiper
  (1:12 PM)

Morgan plays the run very well. He plays through the double team. Stays on his feet. Good ball awareness. He's a very good prospect. Dunlap, Jason Pierre-Paul, Morgan, Everson Griffin and Bailey. Those are 5 studs in the junior class. McCoy and Price are the two stud DTs from the junior class as well.

Andrew (Charlotte, NC )

What needs to be done this draft by the Carolina Panthers?

Mel Kiper
  (1:13 PM)

The big issue with Carolina is they don't have their first round pick. That was traded last year when they got Everette Brown. They are without their first round pick. Even though Delhomme has improved and played better of late, they need a QB. In a year where they could have gotten one in the middle of the first round, this would have been a chance to think about QB. We'll have to wait and see. Even last year, they went to the playoffs and he threw all those INTs in the playoff game. Even though he's righted the ship a little bit, they need a QB.

Mel Kiper
  (1:14 PM)

They just had a huge injury with Jordan Gross going down. That's a catastrophic injury. That impact alone will hurt the second half of the season.

pookybear (Des Moines)

Bryan Bulaga has really struggled this year. Has that affected his draft prospects at all?

Mel Kiper
  (1:15 PM)

He's only a junior. He missed some time early on. He wasn't available early in the year. Cal Calloway, the RT, has a chance to move to the next level as a high draft choice. Bulaga has another year at Iowa.

Ryan (WV)

Is Noel Devine a 1st or 2nd round talent?

Mel Kiper
  (1:15 PM)

He's an underclassman who's a scatback. Who do we compare everyone to now? Darren Sproles. Everyone undersized is Sproles.

David (LA, CA)

Where do you see Toby Gerhart being drafted? Do you think another year (likely as the Heisman favorite) would improve his stock given he's a redshirt junior?

Mel Kiper
  (1:18 PM)

Personally, this is my opinion, when you're a pounder, the John Riggins type of pounder, like Gerhart is, and you take so many hits, how long can you do that? If you want to go down as one of the best RBs in Pac-10 history? Then you go back. And you'd have Luck there at QB. Veteran O-line. Great blocking back in Owen Marecic, one of the best in the nation. Stanford will be a brutally tough team to handle if he comes back. But how much tread do you have left on the tires?

Mel Kiper
  (1:21 PM)

I think it was a coincidental thing more than anything. I don't care if you had Sean Payton coordinating the Florida offense, without Percy Harvin and Murphy, that offense was hurting a little bit. They were two fear players that are hard to replace. How do you replace Percy Harvin? Those guys don't come around every year. You can't just put guys in and say do what he did. Percy Harvin was the No. 1 player coming out of high school at any position. Florida's offense has been impacted. And Tebow has had to deal with some things this year. He's one of the toughest football players I've ever seen. His toughness is beyond belief. He's played four full years at Florida and he's taken hits. He has to rank as the most tenacious QB to ever play the game.

Zev (Cincy)

Who from Cincy's Offense and Defense do you see being drafted this year? and If Collaros keeps playing at this level, do you think he is a first round pick?

Mel Kiper
  (1:22 PM)

The main entity is Marty Gilyard, senior WR/KR. He could help you right away in the return game. The guy who's really stepped up is Armon Binns, the junior WR. He'll be a factor in the 2011 draft. Tony Pike too. He's tall, got a strong arm and is accurate. As a developmental QB, he would be a good 4-5 round pick.

Jillian (Corvallis, OR)

Mel, what are the chances of a guy like Lyle Moevao getting drafted as a QB out of Oregon State with the injuries he's had his senior season and the fact that the NCAA might not give him another year of eligibility for medical hardship?

Mel Kiper
  (1:24 PM)

It will be tough. He's a free agent type guy. Canfield has taken over and he's established himself as a draftable player now. Canfield has emerged. For Moevao, he'll have to make it as a free agent. If Graham Harrell can't get a contract to go to camp, I don't see how Moevao does.

Joe (Austin, TX)

Have you had a chance to evaluate Daniel Thomas from Kansas State? I don't know if he has NFL speed, but he is one of the most physical college runners I've seen in a while. He always seems to be moving forward and gets the most out of his runs.

Mel Kiper
  (1:25 PM)

I've written about him on Personnel Points about two weeks ago on I've had good things to say about him. He's been their MVP this year. Without him, they don't have the record that they have.

Daniel Dragoo (Milwaukee)

Do you see any Badgers getting drafted this year? If so around where?

Mel Kiper
  (1:26 PM)

You're looking at Garrett Graham, the TE, more of a 5th round guy. John Clay, the young RB, but he's not ready yet. The main guy who's really impressed me is O'Brien Schofield. He's been excellent. Good pass rush. Good sideline to sideline speed. He's more suited to a 3-4 OLB. He's been their best defensive player.

Gary (Cincinnati)

Who has the chance to help themselves the most when it comes to draft positioning in the last month of the season?

Mel Kiper
  (1:28 PM)

Mike Iupati, OG, Idaho; Dan Williams, DT, Tennessee; Javier Arenas, KR, Alabama; Darrell Stuckey; Harry Coleman, OLB, LSU.

Jon (Brooklyn NY)

Mel - who will you have your eye on in the Ohio State Michigan game this Saturday as far as potential high round picks go?

Mel Kiper
  (1:30 PM)

Michigan has Brandon Graham. Donovan Warren, their CB. For OSU, Jim Cordle. The two DEs. Dane Sanzenbacher at WR is making himself into a prospect for the 2011 draft. Austin Spitler at MLB has played well too.

Mel: any "franchise" offensive tackles in the top 10? I'm sure the Redskins can use one, or two.

Mel Kiper
  (1:32 PM)

Russell Okung could be. He's lacked consistency at OK State. Good athlete. He would be a qualifier in that category, but he's the only one. There's a young guy at Rutgers Anthony Davis. Keep an eye out on him for next year's draft. I'm in the process of thinking about moving him up to make him the No. 1 junior OT.

Jim (MN)

Eric Decker (Minnesota) has a great wealth of talent at the WR position. He has great hands and a great work ethic. With the injury to his foot and it taking around 6 months to heal, where do you see him in this year's draft? Where was he projected before the injury and where do you project him now?

Mel Kiper
  (1:34 PM)

That's a shame to see him have that type of injury. He could have been a second or third round pick. Great athlete. Good size. It's a shame. You have to wait until the medical comes out. Like Crabtree last year, you won't have any 40 times and exact numbers on him for speed. He won't be able to work out at the combine. He's going to be one of those guys that you take and even if you don't get much out of him as a rookie, but you are drafting a guy with second round ability. Remember Brandon Tate got hurt last year and still went high. He went in the third round to New England.

Daniel (NYC)

Which QBs do you see going in the 2-3 rounds right now?

Mel Kiper
  (1:36 PM)

Definitely Sam Bradford, even with the injury, I say he goes in the top 10. Jimmy Clausen, if he comes out. Jake Locker, I think needs another year. But if you draft him, it's as a developmental QB. Colt McCoy. Jevan Snead needs another year. Tim Tebow, I think he's an H-back/TE, if you draft him as that, I think he's a 4th rounder.

Jason (Tampa)

The Bucs will be looking for a big DT to plug the middle of the defense and make some noise. Who all project to be that type of player in this draft?

Mel Kiper
  (1:38 PM)

The elite DTs are Ndamukong Suh, Gerald McCoy. They fit that bill. Both are great, great players. Both out of the Big 12. I have Suh No. 1 on the Big Board and McCoy as No. 2. Two super elite DTs at 1 and 2. Then Dan Williams from Tennessee, I project him as a mid-first rounder. Terrance Cody is in the late first round mix. Brian Price, junior from UCLA is an under the radar super star. If you want a DT, you can get one at 1 or 2, in the middle of the first round or in the late first round. You'll see stud defensive tackles all through the first round.

Tom (Cincinnati)

Mel, how would you rate this draft vs other years? . . . Offensive or defensive players better?

Mel Kiper
  (1:40 PM)

I think this will be a very much defensive draft. Right now, 11 of my top 17 are defensive players and 16 of the top 25. I haven't even put in juniors Brian Price from UCLA, Allen Bailey, Novarro Bowman, Donovan Warren. So, more than 16 of the top 25 could end up being defensive players. 18 or 19 of the top 25 could end up being defensive players.

Ryan ( Fl)

What about MSU's Anthony Dixon? Where will he get drafted?

Mel Kiper
  (1:42 PM)

Power guy. He's definitely had a great year for Mississippi State. That's a team you look at for the future. They're 4-6 with two games to go. They could end up 5-7. That would be a good building block. But Dixon is a senior and I have him as my fourth rated senior RB. I think he's probably a guy you look at in the 4-5 round area.

We have the Thursday night NFL game and the last big weekend of college games, where you have the full slate of games on Saturday. It's amazing how fast the college season goes. We'll be back to do it again next week.
