Chat with Terry Blount

Terry Blount
  (2:00 PM)

One to go folks. I'm off to Miami tomorrow. What's on your mind?

JT (Orlando)

Everyone agrees that Brad k intentionally spun out Denny at Phoenix. Didn't intentionally spinning/wrecking a driver used to be crossing the line that gets a driver parked?

Terry Blount
  (2:01 PM)

NASCAR is trying to give both of them a little leeway. And Denny bumped Brad before that happened. This is good stuff folks. Having a couple of guys angry and each other is just what NASCAR needs.

Willie (Hollywood, Fl)

Will Nascar let Denny get his just revenge and spin out Brad without parking him?

Terry Blount
  (2:02 PM)

Probably not, especially at a high speed track like Homestead. But it should be fun to watch.

Luis (Miami)

Funny story and not too sarcastic. Did you mean Dale Jr won't win again in Nascar ever?

Terry Blount
  (2:03 PM)

No, just this weekend. He'll win again next season and things will get turned around. But the 2009 season can't end soon enough for Junior.

Mike (Detroit)

Is Danica coming to Nascar in 2010 or not?

Terry Blount
  (2:06 PM)

I still believe she is. I think Rick Hendrick was trying to throw everyone off the scent with what he said in Phoenix. He's been know to do that before. By the way, did it strike anyone else as a little strange that Rick was answering for JR Motorsports? I realize they work together now, but is DP's deal actually with Rick and not Junior? Apparently, Junior is just supplying the car, which is actually part of Hendrick Motorsports.

JOe (FL)

Terry, how do you think mcmurray will perform in the #1 next year and who will the sponsor be?

Terry Blount
  (2:07 PM)

I think Bass Pro Shop is staying for one more year to see how it goes. I expect Jamie to do well, maybe even make a run at the Chase.

Terry Blount
  (2:08 PM)

Obviously, the problems with the 12 car weren't just Stremme. That team has some issues to work through.

Ruben (Miami)

After the Phoenix wreck we heard Stewart say, "Dale Jr is a no-talent SOB". Even though Tony was mad was Tony expressing his true feelings?

Terry Blount
  (2:09 PM)

No, Tony realy likes Junior and they're friends. Tony was mad and said somehthing in the heat of the moment.

ben (nc)

this season kyle busch, edwards, harvick, bowyer, and burton have been very active in the nationwide series. jimmie j, gordon, and mark martin have not been very active in nationwide. as a whole RCR, Gibbs, and Rousch have big nationwide programs, where as HMS doesn't do ALOT in the nationwide series. see where i am going with this.....?

Terry Blount
  (2:10 PM)

Yes, but JR Motorsports really is Hendrick, as I said earlier. However, I do think it's a mistake for Cup contenders to race the entire NW series. Concentrate on the big show and give yourself some down time.

Mike (Detroit)

I'd buy that theory, Terry, but Junior said the same thing Friday though regarding her status.

Terry Blount
  (2:12 PM)

Yeah, they're all being coy right now. DP can't say anything until the finalizes her deal with Andretti, who is making big changes on his team by becoming the sole owner. I wouldn't be surprised to see this announced in Vegas during banquet week.

Chris (Boston)

based on performance and the end of this season who do you see as the biggest threat to steal JJ's thunder next season? last year Carl Edwards was picked and he has been a non factor this season.

Terry Blount
  (2:14 PM)

It's impossible to say how the Roush boys will do because we dn't know enough about the new Ford engine. If it's as good as they seem to think it is, Edwards, Biffle and Kenseth all will be contenders again. Ragan is running the new motor this weekend at Homestead.

JTF (Bayonne, NJ)

Terry, who do you think is the best driver out there who most probably isn't going to have a ride for most, if not all, of the 2010 Sprint Cup season?

Terry Blount
  (2:15 PM)

Scott Riggs is one guy who comes mind.

andy (apex)

wake me when johnson retires...

Terry Blount
  (2:16 PM)

OK. I'll give you a call in 2021.

Anthony (Long Island)

How bad does Jeff Gordon need a new crew chief? This guy obviously does not how to set up the car to Gordons liking

Terry Blount
  (2:17 PM)

Jeff really likes Steve. The problem is Jeff's racing style doesn't work so well at times with this car.

Matt (Virginia)

Any early favorites for the 2010 title not initialed JJ?

Terry Blount
  (2:19 PM)

I think Kyle will contend with Rogers on the pit box. And I really believe Denny is on the verge of big things, if he stays away from Brad. Kurt is running extremely well right now, but you don't know how things will go with a new crew chief. And look for RCR to make a major comeback next year. Those guys have it going on right now. Too late for this year, but they'll contend next year.

Jeremy (Port Angeles, Washington)

When do you think Danica will be doing Nascar fulltime.

Terry Blount
  (2:21 PM)

I'm not convinced she will run NASCAR full time. She will get her feet wet next year, but if things don't go well, she may decide racing full-time in NASCAR isn't the right thing to do.

Teri (CA)

Do you think the 17 team needs a crew chief change?

Terry Blount
  (2:23 PM)

No. Drew knows his stuff. The problems with the Ford cars are performance related with the motors and the bodies.

Jeremy (Philadelphia)

Will Bobby Labonte do better running at TRG in the 71 than he did at HOF/Yates

Terry Blount
  (2:24 PM)

Maybe in a race or two, but not much. They just don't have enough quality people there to make that a contending operation, but they do plan to hire more people in the off season.

Ricky (Houston)

'09 cup , Kyle has 4 wins, 9 top 5's, 12 top 10's and 1 pole. Would most teams kill for that kind of consistency?

Terry Blount
  (2:25 PM)

Not if they miss the Chase.

Jason (Kendall)

What makes Kyle Busch so much better than the other drivers?

Terry Blount
  (2:26 PM)

He can control a looser car better than most drivers. The only driver who might be better at it is Johnson.

Shane (PA)

Hey Terry. I think the Chase is the problem with Cup racing today. Not the cars, even though I hate them, or the points system. The Chase makes people points race. I believe people started wathching NASCAR because of the great racing, not to see who won the cahmpionship.

Terry Blount
  (2:28 PM)

That's true Shane, but drivers were points racing long befoire the Chase came along. What NASCAR needs is more points for winning.

Jason (Kendall)

If Denny and Kyle win 5-6 races, Roush Fords win 5-6 and Childress makes a comeback, that doesn't leave much for Henrick. Who's going backward? #5, #24?

Terry Blount
  (2:29 PM)

I don't see them going backward much. I just think 2010 will be more competitive with closer competition and bigger variety of winners. At least I hope that happens.

William (Mooresville)

BK is not that bad of a driver, he just doesn't want to be pushed around. BUT if he pulls stunts like Phoenix again aren't even more drivers going to not work with him? I hate to say it but ego is going to be bruised more than his rear from the comments and lack of respect from the senior driver. Hasn't anyone of them talked to him about it?

Terry Blount
  (2:31 PM)

NASCAR talked to him Sunday at Phoenix and veteran drivers also have talked to him. Look, Brad is no different than a lot of young drivers in the past who want to some in a make a name for themselves, but get a little too aggressive. He's a very talented driver and he'll be fine.

Trixie (Tacoma, WA)

Hi Terry. I like your column today. What's your favorite thing about Miami?

Terry Blount
  (2:33 PM)

Thanks for the kind words. I really love Joe's Stone Crab, but it's tough to get a table on race week. And it ain't cheap. And South Beach has a lot of fun places to sit outside and down a mojito.

Denny the Geek (Homestead)

Anybody got a pool on what lap I'm punting Brad on in the NW race?

Terry Blount
  (2:35 PM)

That's the problem fake Denny. Everybody in the universe is watching.

JTF (Bayonne, NJ)

Is Homestead-Miami really as in the middle of nowhere as it seemed to me? I drove from Ft. Lauderdale down to Coral Castle one summer and that felt like forever. And the speedway was still a ways further down U.S. 1.

Terry Blount
  (2:36 PM)

It's about a 45-minute drive from downtown Miami, but not a bad drive. Once you get close it's interesting to see all the palm tree farms, literally thousands of palm trees growing in all sizes and shapes near the track.

Lois (Virginia)

Was it Kyle on the radio at Phoenix during the Nationwide race saying,"what is wrong with that kid" about Brad?

Terry Blount
  (2:37 PM)

Yes it was, but remember, Denny is Kyle's teammate. And Kyle didn't know Denny bumped Brad before the other incident happened.

Mojo (Houston)

What do the haters really want - the guy with the most wins is leading points going into the finale?

Terry Blount
  (2:39 PM)

I think what everyone wants is a really close championship battle at the end. JJ deserves to win the championship, regardless of what points system you use.

Nick (Butner NC)

IF Hamlin does retaliate against Keselowski on Saturday would NASCAR doing anything like sit him out on Sunday?

Terry Blount
  (2:40 PM)

No, but they might park him for the rest if the NW race. And Denny might not care, but I guarantee you JD Gibbs cares and so does the sponsor of that car.

Emily (Jersey)

Does Carl need a new crew chief? I love Bob to death, but it seems that race after race, he can never adjust a race car correctly...and if he does, 85% of the race is over already.

Terry Blount
  (2:41 PM)

None of the Ford guys need new crew chiefs. The guy on the pit box isn'tthe problem. It's the car and the motor. The Fords aren't as good as the Hendrick cars. No one is.

Trip (SC)

What makes you believe that Dale jr will be any better in 2010 than he has been this year?

Terry Blount
  (2:42 PM)

Could he possibly be any worse?

Craig (San Jose, CA)

How come when all the JJ haters take shots at his accomplishments, they never talk about the simple fact that he has already won 47 times, as he completes his 8th season. The man wins races. Period. Thoughts?

Terry Blount
  (2:44 PM)

As I wrote Sunday, I think JJ is the most underrated athlete I've ever seen in three decades of covering sports.

Billy (TN)

First of all, thanks for the weekly forum it is much appreciated by us gear heads. Since it seems your primary job is to cover NASCAR during the season, what do you cover in the short off season? Thanks

Terry Blount
  (2:46 PM)

It's the shortest off season in pro sports Billy. I still will write for the website, but I plan to spend a lot of time on my back deck with family and friends and my favorite beverage in hand.

Saul (Sacramento)

Do you see Malec going to work for the 88 team?

Terry Blount
  (2:47 PM)

No. They've already announced that McGrew is staying as the crew chief in 2010.

Marisol (Miami)

When Dale jr quits driving will his fans go to support Kyle Busch?

Terry Blount
  (2:48 PM)

Now you know better than that Marisol. Maybe by then they can root for Jeffrey Earnhardt.

Marvin (DC)

Do you agree with Denny Hamlin that Brad K will be just another Casey Attwood, Bobby Hamilton jr type of driver and be gone from the cup scene in a few years?

Terry Blount
  (2:49 PM)

Abslutely not. Brad's the real deal. He's going to be a good Cup driver for many years.

Saul (Sacramento)

What would think be perfect scenario going into the last race. 3 to 5 Cars within 10 to 30 points of the leader?

Terry Blount
  (2:50 PM)

Everyone would love to see that scenario. That's was the hope when the Chase started, but it hasn't turned out that way.

T-berry (J-town)

Do you think Lance is doing a good job as Junior's crew chief. I was disappointed in the Talledega and Texas races when he didn't get Junior to pit soon enough to have a good finish after running in the top 10 all day.

Terry Blount
  (2:51 PM)

The verdict on that still is out for me. I'm keeping an open mind until I see how they do early next season.

When Junior brings his team to Cup, do you think Kyle would drive for him?? The fans wouldn't know how to act if that happened.

Terry Blount
  (2:52 PM)

Anything is possible. No one ever would have thought Darrell Waltrip would drive a car for Dale Earnhardt Sr., but it happened.

Matt (Virginia)

Any chance Stremme sees a Cup car again?

Terry Blount
  (2:53 PM)

He's on the 09 car this weekend.

Rex (Indy)

What moves will Nascar make to insure that the #48 doesn't make in 5 in a row next year?

Terry Blount
  (2:54 PM)

Nothing. That's up to the other teams trying to catch him.

John (Alabama)

Do you think Denny will actually wreck Brad this week

Terry Blount
  (2:55 PM)

No. But he might rattle his cage a little if he gets the chance.

Wes (Conn)

Could we see Stremme head hunting Brad during the cup race too?

Terry Blount
  (2:56 PM)

No one is head hunting anyone guys. This is dangerous stuff on a fast track like Homestead. But restarts could get crazy depending on which drivers are lined up close to each other.

Devin (Johnson City TN)

Don?t you find it ironic that NASCAR changed the points format to make things exciting at the end of the year, and if we went by the old points system, Jimmie would be ahead of Tony by 8 points going into Miami?

Terry Blount
  (3:00 PM)

Actually it's 13 points, but it's flawed logic. Everyone would have raced differently if the old system was in place. It's why in baseball scoring you can't assume a double play. Jimmie was racing to make the Chase and position himself for the final 10 races. All this propbably would have turned out different under the full-season points system.

Terry Blount
  (3:02 PM)

Gotta run folks. Need to pack my bags and get ready to head to Florida. Have a great week. Peace.
