Chat with Dan Rafael

Dan Rafael
  (11:14 PM)

Hey Fight Freaks, Kessler-Ward is just about over. Ward is beating the crap out of him. Be back when it's over.

Dan Rafael
  (11:23 PM)

How about that Fight Freaks? A VERY impressive performance from Andre Ward. He looked sensational and certainly changes the outlook of the Super Six tonight. I'm sure some of you also watched the Pacquiao-Cotto replay on HBO. And I hope you checked out today's new blog. Let's get to it.

Mark (ATL)

Is Kessler going to be healed in time for his next fight?

Dan Rafael
  (11:25 PM)

He has several cuts but he's not supposed to fight until at least around April, so perhaps it gets slightly delated. We will have to wait and see. Kessler had absolutely nothing tonight. I was stunned how little he showed. And Ward showed everything in a brilliant performance.

CLOVIS, NM [via mobile]

HELL YEAH!!! U S A!!

Sendu (Toronto, ON)

Do you think Ward is a dirty fighter (especially this fight)?

Dan Rafael
  (11:26 PM)

Not at all. The butts were not on purpose. He fought a virtually perfect fight. Frankly, I had it a shutout.

Mark (ATL)

Was this fight more of the brilliance of Ward or the flatness of Mikkel?

Dan Rafael
  (11:26 PM)

Definitely a combination of both.

Mark (Brooksville, Fla.)

Dan.Was Kessler exposed tonight or was it more of an off night?

Dan Rafael
  (11:27 PM)

He wasn't exposed. Kessler is an excellent fighter with the resume to back it up. He had an off night on a night that his opponent also was brilliant.

Daniel (Pittsburgh,PA)

Wow. Do you think that the headbutts played that much of a difference? I think that Ward was on his way without the head collisions... Kessler seemed tight and confused.

Dan Rafael
  (11:27 PM)

I don't think the butts meant much. Ward was taking it to him with or without them. He was either going to win the decision or stop him in the 11th or 12th.

Erik (Atlanta, GA)

Does Ward now ascend to the favorite of the tournament after having clearly the best performance of any of the other fighters in the first round?

Dan Rafael
  (11:28 PM)

I would say at this point it's Ward and Abraham. But Ward just completely destroyed the No. 1 fighter in the division.

joshua (elizabeth city, nc)

i have new respect for ward i have no doubt he can beat froch but the real fight will be him versus abraham

Marty (Cincinnati)

Kessler making excuses again. Ward beat him from pillar to post.

Marc (Philly)

Just want the freaks to say a prayer for Francisco Rodriguez who after a fight of the year kind of fight is fighting for his life in a Philadelphia hospital

Dan Rafael
  (11:28 PM)

Agreed. Good luck for his recovery.

Bayside Billy (SD)

After tonight, it looks like almost a guarantee that it's Abraham/Ward in the final...agree?

Dan Rafael
  (11:29 PM)

Nothing is a guarantee whatsoever.

brendan (philadelphia)

ward only gets one point in the tournament for this win, correct?

Dan Rafael
  (11:29 PM)

He gets two points for the win. You get a third point if you get a KO and you get one point for a draw.

Eric (Baltimore)

Which 3 rounds did the one judge give to Kessler? I had it a shutout.

Dan Rafael
  (11:30 PM)

I have no idea. I also had it a shutout. I didn't even think any round was all that close to even have a debate about who won it.

Ricardo (Bronx, NY)

Hey Dan, How big an upset is this in your opinion?

Dan Rafael
  (11:30 PM)

It's an upset. It's not so shocking that Ward would win the fight. The shocking part is that it was a complete destruction.

Marty (Cincinnati)

Who is up next for Kessler?

Dan Rafael
  (11:31 PM)

Kessler's next opponent is supposed to be Carl Froch.

Dan Rafael
  (11:32 PM)

He's supposed to fight Jermain Taylor. If Taylor drops out, Ward would face the replacement.

Justin (Springfield, N.J.)

Ward was sensational. Just an utterly brillant performance. Kessler was flat, and Ward was on his game. I didn't think Ward this type of performance in him, but he did and deserves to be considered the favorite in the Super Six at this point.

Jim Lampley (HBO)

There is a new star in boxing! and his name is ANDRE WARD!

Dan Rafael
  (11:32 PM)

Wrong network.

Carlos (NJ)

Saw the replay of Cotto/Pacquiao. Another good pick of opponents for Pacquiao. Cotto/De LaHoya/Hatton were all shot fighters. He's looked brilliant against people on the way down. I'm not totally sold on Pacquiao. Are you?

Dan Rafael
  (11:33 PM)

The morons are out early in tonight's Freak Chat.

Randall (Tampa, FL)

Dan I loved watching an American venue filled for an American fighter.

Dan Rafael
  (11:34 PM)

Agreed. They had a very excited and large crowd there for the fight tonight. Ward is officially a draw now in Oakland after two fights in a row there with big crowds.

Christopher (Kalamazoo, MI)

Dan, you said Kessler has a resume to back it up. Who has he beaten that is anybody besides Andrade? ALL of his other wins are against average fighters. Please answer this. I really don't see your point here.

Dan Rafael
  (11:35 PM)

He shutout Mundine in Australia. That's a good win. He blitzed Beyer in three rounds in a unification fight. Why don't you look at his resume? Frankly, the Mundine win was better than the Andrade win.

Joe (Boston, MA)

So does Andre Ward jump to #1 in your 168 lb rankings? I'm guessing yes.

Dan Rafael
  (11:38 PM)

I have to think about that. We'll see. I'm sure you'll check the new rankings on Tuesday.

Brian (scottsdale, az)

I hate not having an east coast feed of showtime. I take it that Ward was spectacular, or just better than kessler tonight?

Dan Rafael
  (11:38 PM)

He was spectacular.

Randy (NYC)

Just like in Joe C. fight, Kessler had trouble with a slick fighter that punches with both hands. He should have a much easier time with Froch

Dan Rafael
  (11:39 PM)

Who knows? This fight took a lot out of him I am sure.

Dan Rafael
  (11:40 PM)

I haven't heard anything about Kessler having weight trouble and he looked damn good at the weigh in yesterday.

Flemming (Copenhagen, Denmark)

DTM, gotta say I'm massively disappointed tonight. Headbutts or not, Kessler looked as bad as I have ever seen. Ward outhustled, outboxed and outbullied Kessler and made Mikkel look bad. Ward was very, very good. I do think Froch is the best possible opponent for Kessler next and I expect him to come back strong. Nonetheless, as a Dane, it wasn't a good feeling.

Dan Rafael
  (11:41 PM)

I know you're a regular Freak and know what a big Kessler guy you are. But he just didn't have anything tonight up against a hungry and well-prepared Ward.

Marty (Cincinnati)

Flemming, if only the fighter of your country showed as much grace in defeat as you did.......

Chris (WA)

Do you see Kessler having a better fight against Froch?

Dan Rafael
  (11:44 PM)

It can't be worse can it?

Kramer (Across the hall)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh the love child?

Dan Rafael
  (11:44 PM)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child.

evander holyfield (los angeles)

i ant see no headbutts

Dan, (Brooksville, Fla.)

Dan,Out of curiousity if a second fighter was to drop out of the Super Six Tourney what/who is the backup plan?

Dan Rafael
  (11:45 PM)

They would find another replacement.

Brian (scottsdale, az)

Don't know if this is the best time to ask, but any word on how nick charles is doing?

Dan Rafael
  (11:47 PM)

Happy to say Nick is fighting hard. He was well enough to come to Las Vegas last week for the Pacquiao-Cotto fight. He called the fight for Top Rank's international broadcast. I had a chance to talk to him and he was really happy to be back at ringside and so many of us were very, very happy to see him. He's a little weak but he's doing as best as he can be doing right now.

Mike (los angeles)

Dan will Kessler crying about been cheated tonight and Dirrell camp thinking he got robbed hurt the future of the super 6?

Dan Rafael
  (11:48 PM)

I have no idea and don't care. He lost fair and square, as did Dirrell.

John (Clifton Park NY)

Dan, any chance at all Mayweather prices himself out of the Pacquio fight and runs to the hills?

Dan Rafael
  (11:49 PM)

My hometown in the house! There's always that chance but I think the fight will get made. Just give it time and it will get made.

Matt (LA)

Has there ever been a top tier fighter transition to announcer better than Antonio Tarver?

Dan Rafael
  (11:49 PM)

George Foreman did pretty well too you know.

Scott (Bloomington, MN)

Dantonio, Who was it that Mike Jones refused to fight?

Dan Rafael
  (11:50 PM)

Randall Bailey. And I wouldn't say Mike himself refused. His promoter, for one, turned it down.

You Know Who (Texas Penitentiary)

Still Here

Dan Rafael
  (11:51 PM)

Thank you, James Kirkland.

mike (va)

who wins between ward and dawson

Dan Rafael
  (11:51 PM)

Facinating matchup. Hard to say.

Bronk (Dillsburg, PA)

Dan...can you tell me anything about Edwin Rodriguez from Worcester, MA? Is he a legit prospect in the middleweight division?

Dan Rafael
  (11:52 PM)

Definitely a legit prospect. Had an excellent amateur career and is moving along nicely in the pros. He just fought the other night.

bjorn (BAY AREA)

WE ARE GOING CRAZY TONIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!

chuzen (st. louis)

ward's greatest achievement tonight was shutting jim gray up

Steve (Indianapolis)

Dan I know this talk of Pac-PBF being in Dallas is cool, but does that crappy commission down there bother you?

Dan Rafael
  (11:53 PM)

Slightly.

Justin (Springfield, NJ)

Dan: Whose dominating performance was more suprising: Ward or Pacman?

Dan Rafael
  (11:53 PM)

Ward's.

Nick (Queens, NY)

Are the belts automatically on the line for every fight in the tournament?

Dan Rafael
  (11:53 PM)

No, only in the fights where one of the guys has a belt. Duh.

Scott (Bloomington, MN)

How's the Cold Danno? The Freaks are greatful for you sticking it out.

Dan Rafael
  (11:55 PM)

Brutal. I have mucas streaming out of my nose like Kessler had blood coming out of his cuts. I have a sinus infection I think. It freaking hurts in my gums and my nose and my face. I'm a ruin, but I can't sleep either, so I'm up chatting with you Freaks.

Pribs (Bethlehem, PA)

I may have heard wrong with all of Gus Johnson's yelling, but I think Tarver actually gave Roy Jones a compliment

Dan Rafael
  (11:55 PM)

He did, but Gus needs to just take it down a notch.

Mike (Queens)

Can you please answer this Dan. Doesn't Andre Ward still have 1 fight left on his initial HBO contract? If so, can HBO make him fight on there network any time they want? Even if they can't, can they make him fight on HBO after the Super 6 even if Showtime wants to lick him up? Technically he still owes HBO right?

Dan Rafael
  (11:57 PM)

I am not certain of this but I believe HBO, which did have another fight with Ward, long ago let him out of the obligation since it had nothing for him. I do not think that is in effect anymore. Even if it was, I would not think HBO could interfere with his existing agreement for the Super Six with Showtime. It's really a moot point.

mike (costa rica)

does the "bat phone" ring this late??

Dan Rafael
  (11:57 PM)

Yes. The Bat Phone rings day and night.

Braindamaged2too (The Asylum)

D-T-M,One thing I appreciated from Ward tonight was that he acted like a gentleman and didn't put Kessler down. He seems like a pretty classy guy!

Dan Rafael
  (11:58 PM)

I've known Andre since he turned pro and one thing I have ALWAYS thought about him is that he is simply one of the classiest fighters I have ever dealt with. Just a pure gentleman.

Outlaw1120: East Orange,NJ [via mobile]

Dan, do you know if and when Margarito returns to the Ring? If so who is he likely to fight? Congrats Ward. Way to bring the US back in the race!!

Dan Rafael
  (11:59 PM)

Margacheato can reapply for a license in California in January, although there is no guarantee he will be granted one.

Tom (Philly)

Does this fight make you think less of Calzaghe's win over Kessler? Or just more of Ward?

Dan Rafael
  (12:00 AM)

They have nothing to do with each other. Why would I think less of Calzaghe's win?

Jason (DC)

Dan, if this chat goes too long, will Mayweather Sr. accuse you of using performance enhancing drugs?

Dan Rafael
  (12:00 AM)

Probably, but I am told he just doesn't understand the difference between supplments and steroids.

Dan Rafael
  (12:01 AM)

Speaking of which, I hope the Freaks will check out my new blog from today at http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/blog/index?entryID=4678252&name=rafael_dan

Fernando (Los Angeles)

Hey Dan, just and update for all the boxing freaks. Edga Sosa just got KO'd by Mayol in the 2nd round, a minute after receiving a major headbutt by Mayol. Nonetheless, Mayol is the new champ.

Jorge (Phoenix, AZ)

If Pac fights Floyd, his ring entrance should be "War Machine"!!!!!!!!

Dan Rafael
  (12:03 AM)

Bless you.

Jason (Riverside, CA)

Hi Dan, first time on the chat. After the years of FNF buildup and backstory, I have been hoping for the Peterson brothers to do well. Do you think 2010 will be their breakthrough year? Also any word on who Anthony is fighting next?

Dan Rafael
  (12:03 AM)

Well, Lamont has a chance to make a big statement on Dec. 12 against Tim Bradley. It's a toss up fight. As for Anthony, nothing on the schedule right now.

Pete (NYC)

Edison Miranda was more competitive against Ward. Shocking.

Dan Rafael
  (12:04 AM)

That's a great point.

Marty (Cincinnati)

"I'm not saying this to be demeaning, but Floyd never finished high school and I'm not sure he knows the difference between steroids and supplements, which can be confusing. Nouns, subjects and verbs can also be confusing if you don't finish high school. I'm just not sure Floyd knows the difference."Hilarious!

Dan Rafael
  (12:05 AM)

One of the quotes of the year.

Joe (Westwood (CA))

Hey Dan - who do like next week in the Bute/Andrade rematch next week?

Dan Rafael
  (12:05 AM)

Bute again.

Daniel (Hawthorne, CA)

When is Rigondeau, Lara, and Yudell Jhonson fighting again?

Dan Rafael
  (12:06 AM)

Not sure on all of them, but I spoke with Shelly Finkel tonight. He manages Lara and told me Lara would be on the Dec. 12 Diaz-Malignaggi 2 undercard in Chicago.

Joe ((Boston, MA))

I know we disagree on the Froch-Dirrell decision, and you thought Dirrell did too much running and holding. It looked like Ward was doing the same thing, but obviously more effectively. Something for Dirrell to learn from?

Dan Rafael
  (12:07 AM)

Ward did not hold and run like Dirrell. Ward tied up at times, which is part of boxing. But he did not do it to excess. He kept his hands moving, came forward at times and used excellent footwork and defense. Totally different performances. Ward was mostly positive. Dirrell was mostly negative.

jvbox (Chicago)

I heard a rumor that the Seminole Indians have pulled the plug on Warriors Boxing, Have you heard anything of the sort?

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 AM)

The tribe itself has decided to continue being involved in boxing, but Leon Margules, who ran the promotional company, has taken it over from the tribe and will continue to run the promotional company. Business as usual.

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 AM)

Haye will probably avoid the Klitschko brothers for now. If he ever does fight them, he'll get drilled.

Matt (Dover, DE)

Would you ever think about getting a pair of eyeglasses similar to Gus Johnson's?

Dan Rafael
  (12:10 AM)

No.

Ryan (Chicago, IL)

So Jermain Taylor gets a title shot if he stays in the tournament? BOGUS!!!

Dan Rafael
  (12:11 AM)

That's how the tournament was set up ahead of time. Too bad if you don't like it.

Anthony (Killeen, TX)

Do you think last saturdays performance completely killed any chance of a Marquez/Pacman 3? Is there any reason for this fight at this point?

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 AM)

I think it could happen someday but at this point, with Manny have crushed a top welter and JMM getting blitzed by Floyd, it makes no sense and won't happen for the time being. There are other fish to fry for Manny. Now down the road? Maybe. But not right now.

Everardo (Chicago (Illinois))

Dan, during yesterday's chat you wrote: "There will never be a bigger fight than Ali-Frazier 1." Wasn't Louis-Schmeling II bigger than Ali-Frazier I?

Dan Rafael
  (12:13 AM)

No. Ali-Frazier 1 was the biggest fight ever.

mike (costa rica)

dan , you do not like david haye at all person or boxer just a guess

Dan Rafael
  (12:14 AM)

Actually, personally, David is a cool guy and I get on with him just fine. I actually enjoy talking to him and interviewing him. And he's also a good sport about what's written about him.

ron (new jersey)

You think calzage comes back to fight the winner of this tournament

john (LA)

Why does everyone try to take credit away from the winners by saying the other guy sucked, cotto looked amazing rounds 1-3 and pacquiao wore him down just an amazing performance by pacquiao, i have watched wards last 3 fights and i knew he had a great chance to outbox kessler and he did, by the way do think he is the smartest fighter today?

Dan Rafael
  (12:15 AM)

People love to discredit fighters. It can never be that one guy had a great night against another top guy. It's insane. But I'm used to it.

Rob (Atlanta)

Dan - what are you looking forward to most outside of Mayweather/Pacquio and the Super 6?

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 AM)

I'm looking forward to Mosley-Berto. I still hope to see Pavlik-Williams at some point next year. I'm interested to see Adamek's continued moves at heavyweight. I am looking forward to seeing if JM Lopez and Gamboa can win their way into a fight with each other.

sara (towson)

I dont think that ward can stand toe to toe with Abraham, do you?

Dan Rafael
  (12:19 AM)

I don't think anyone can (or should) stand toe-to-toe with him. That would not be smart.

Chris (Vancouver BC)

Wow, what a performance from Ward! Shelby Pudwil almost did better than Kessler did against Ward. Lets start banging the drum for Pudwil vs Kessler!

Dan Rafael
  (12:20 AM)

Just relax.

Sam (NJ)

All the credit to Cotto for fighting as long as he did, but shouldn't someone (Joe Santiago, I'm looking at you) have stopped the fight earlier?

Dan Rafael
  (12:20 AM)

Yup.

Pete (Salt Lake)

America has some good stars developing in Ward Paul Williams Berto and Dawson. Do you think any of these guys can make the jump to super stardom?

Dan Rafael
  (12:21 AM)

As long as they fight the top guys, make it exciting for fans and show a little personality.

Dan Rafael
  (12:22 AM)

Because a lot of those people just don't get it.

Randall (Tampa, FL)

Dan I was never completely sold on ward, because he liked to coast in his fights, but tonight he was focused and he got the job done.

Michael (Oakland) [via mobile]

Just got back from the fight- oracle arena was electric plus nobody got shot afterwards!

Dan Rafael
  (12:22 AM)

Congrats.

Sean (Woodside, NY)

I gave Kessler a close 5th round and maaaaybe one of the later ones, but I can see a shutout. I do think the 5th round was close enough to at lease have a debate about though.

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 AM)

I had it a shutout and didn't think any rounds were all that close.

Mike D. (New Orleans, LA)

How great is Dirrell-Ward going to be? Who do you like there?

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 AM)

That could be a real stinker. Their styles don't mesh all that well and they're good friends, so you never know if that could hurt the fight.

Ricardo (Bronx, NY)

Dan doing the chat at 11:40pm, on a big-time cold, and facing the music of the guy he saw as the man to beat in the tournament loses, he doesn't run, hes a freak!!!

Dan Rafael
  (12:25 AM)

LOL. I'm certainly not the only one who thought Kessler would win the tournament. He was the overwhelming favorite. And may I remind you that this was one fight. He can still win it. I'm not saying he will, just that there are still two more prelim fights to go before the semis are set. Anything can happen. That's why this tournament is so great.

Chris (Vancouver BC)

D$, have they named the opponent for Arreola yet?

Dan Rafael
  (12:26 AM)

Brian Minto.

Jason (Gainesville, VA)

RAD well after midnight with a bad cold...you really are Dan THE MAN!

Dan Rafael
  (12:27 AM)

This we know.

Doug (Little Rock)

If Taylor stays in the tourney, how much of a chance do you give him against Ward?

Dan Rafael
  (12:27 AM)

Slim.

Gabe (Dallas, TX)

Hey Dan, What are you thoughts on stage one of the tournament. I think the tournament hasn't really lived up to the hype.

Dan Rafael
  (12:30 AM)

Why? We had an awesome performance from Ward tonight, albeit not a great fight. Abraham-Taylor had a spectacular knockout. Froch-Dirrell was the only crappy fight, but still had a lot of people talking because of the decision. I am more than satisifed with it so far.

Dan Rafael
  (12:31 AM)

Freaks, can we stop with the Taylor staying in the tournament or leaving? No decision is official. Trust me, when there is something official, I will write it. Until then, don't bother asking anymore.

Braindamaged2too (Brooksville, Fla.)

We're not talking Swine Flu here are we Big D? Is there background music tonight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:32 AM)

No, I don't have swine flu, but if I did there are few Freaks I would love to cough on. Playing a little Genesis.

Elbert (Urbana, IL)

Just how do you penetrate Abraham's peek a boo defense?

Dan Rafael
  (12:33 AM)

Very carefully?

Chris (Vancouver BC)

Couldnt ask for much more from the tournament as we have gotten so far. With there being 3 fights for all, its only going to get better and better as it goes on and stakes get higher. Not sure what you were expecting Gabe.

Dan Rafael
  (12:34 AM)

Exactly. Some people are impossible to please.

Greg (Los Angeles)

Dan is it just me or did Berto look just a little out of shape for the Mosley press conference?

Dan Rafael
  (12:35 AM)

He was defintely heavy.

Scotty (Lincoln, NE)

I heard drinking a tall glass of your own urine helps a cold go away faster.

Dan Rafael
  (12:35 AM)

I'd rather have the cold.

OB (Pitt)

Why do people complain about high quality competition? Super Six been $$$.

Branden (Hayward)

Dan, how is Donaire looking since his illness. He has Bay Area roots too. Go Rebels!

Dan Rafael
  (12:37 AM)

Talked to Nonito and his wife in Vegas last week at the weigh in. He's better now. He'll fight Feb. 13 on a Top Rank ppv card at the Las Vegas Hilton.

Tom E (Jersey City, NJ)

I thought I picked up from the first fight camp 360 that Ward is the only fighter who doesn't have to travel overseas in the super 6. Is that the case?

Dan Rafael
  (12:40 AM)

He doesn't have to go to Europe, but that doesn't mean he won't have to go outside of Oakland.

mike (costa rica)

dan, our you surprised roy is a 3-1 fav. over green or does that sound right??

Dan Rafael
  (12:41 AM)

I haven't seen the odds, but that sounds a little big high.

Calix (New Orleans, La)

Who does Ward fight in the 3rd round?

Dan Rafael
  (12:42 AM)

Dirrell, his Olympic teammate.

m.c (s.a. tx)

danimal, some people are just plain negative. I rank pacman's victory over cotto up there with Duran's first fight with Leonard

Peter (Diamond Bar, CA)

Dan, Who's your dark-horse to win the Super 6 out of the fighters who have already lost?

Dan Rafael
  (12:44 AM)

Probably Dirrell.

Chris (Vancouver BC)

Dan, what are your thoughts on the possible Marquez-Hatton fight? Seems like a bit of a money grab. Id rather see Marquez defend his lightweight title and Hatton take on one of the many 140 pounders(Ortiz, Maidana, Bradley/Peterson).

Dan Rafael
  (12:45 AM)

Why would Marquez do that when he can make probably two or three times more to fight Hatton in a bigger fight?

bill (carmel, ny)

maybe ward should change his nickname from SOG to OMG

Dan Rafael
  (12:46 AM)

Nice.

Jamaal (Thailand)

Dan, when B-Hop and Roy meet at what weight will they be fighting Light Heavy, Cruiser or somewhere in between?

Dan Rafael
  (12:46 AM)

Light heavy.

James (The Cities)

PBD, what do you think about Ward's star power? Can he be a big PPV draw? For some reason i don't see it but i love the guy as a fighter

Dan Rafael
  (12:47 AM)

Andre has talent, he's extremely well spoken, young, an undefeated Olympic gold medalist who just won a world title by beating the No. 1 guy in the division and he's smart. He has everything it takes.

Ochs (Webster, NY)

Dan, I think James Toney is training like Pacquaio....at least the 7000 calories a day part.

Goldstone (Los Angeles)

Dan what impressed you most about Ward tonight - footwork, accuracy (and punch selection) or speed?

Dan Rafael
  (12:49 AM)

His jab was tremendous.

Flemming (Copenhagen, Denmark)

Well DTM, it's 6.45 am, so I'll pack it in. Would just like pass a few quotes on to the Freaks. Kessler said to Danish press, that he wasn't happy about the ref and the headbutts, but he also knew that Ward was the better fighter tonight.

Calix (New Orleans, La)

Gotta love Ward walking in waving the American flag, I think he has the personality to become a star if he keeps winning. Do you agree?

Dan Rafael
  (12:51 AM)

Definitely.

Lazer (Brooklyn. NY)

Hey Dan, Putting aside everything you've written about Yuri Foreman to date and the back and forth with Mr. Arum, I feel like you didn't give Yuri enough credit for his win over Santos. (1) It was his first time fighting a southpaw (2) he almost knocked out a three time world champ (who many considered to be underrated) in the 4th round (3) he was the aggressor throughout the fight (4) talking about ring rust, besides for a 3 round ND this was Yuri's fist fight in eleven months. Either way it was real nice of you to come over and congratulate Yuri and his wife after the fight.

Dan Rafael
  (12:55 AM)

I have followed Yuri's career from day 1. In fact, I was ringside for his professional debut. My opinion was never anything against him personally. In fact, I think he's a great guy. 100 percent. My criticism was that, first off, Arum said over and over he'd put on a stellar undercard. He didn't. Not even close. In fact, it was mostly crapola. Also, I have seen most all of Yuri's fights and he does not make entertaining bouts. He's talented and can box and win, but it's not enjoyable to watch. I felt like the style matchup of Foreman and Santos would make for a terrible fight. It so happened, that Santos was a dead man in there and Yuri was able to take it right to him and make it slightly better than expected. So Arum can give me the finger all he wants but I stand by my opinion of the fight being on that card. That said, I sincerely congratulate Yuri on his victory and wish him nothing but success.

Phife (Boston)

What on earth is Wladimir up to? Seems like he never fights. Clock's ticking on the man...

Dan Rafael
  (12:56 AM)

Maybe you ought to pay attention. Dude had shoulder surgery and is injured and out of action until at least March. Wake up.

Jerry (Queens, NY)

Danny, have you ever felt physically threatened by a boxer in person?

Dan Rafael
  (12:58 AM)

Yes. And a manager.

brian (hershey)

What in the world happened to Demtrius Hopkins? He looked promising aqainst Warrick in '06.

He was released by Top Rank and recently signed with TKO Promotions. He's going to fight at welterweight and has a fight coming up. I can't recall the exact date. Check the sked.

jonathan (tempe arizona )

dan whta do you think is the most excting fight youve ever seen i would have to say the castillo coralles fight

Dan Rafael
  (1:01 AM)

Absolutely, Corrales-Castillo 1. I was at the fight and it was awe-inspiring. Hands down the best fight I've ever seen.

Courtney ((Atlanta, GA))

And a Trainer... I remember when Yoel Judah threatened you on your story about the Shower Door defeating Zab Judah.

Dan Rafael
  (1:02 AM)

Yoel never threatened me, at least not to my face. In fact, I saw Yoel in Vegas last week and we chatted for a bit.

Ben (Minneapolis)

What are your thoughts on Kessler's claim that the headbutts and home town referee made the difference? Kessler did look lost every time they clinched.

Dan Rafael
  (1:03 AM)

If that's what it takes for Kessler to get through the night. He got his ass kicked. End of discussion.

Big Ivan (Dallas, TX)

I called this fight, but how shocked are you?

Dan Rafael
  (1:04 AM)

I'm not at all shocked Ward won. Only that he totally dominated.

Dan (Chicago)

WOOO HOOO!!!! Ward!!! Who expected that?!

Dan i seen your comments on E.S.P.N after the cotto fight! Do really think manny's going to beat floyd? And how is he going to do it?

Dan Rafael
  (1:05 AM)

I have not made a pick nor will I for months to come, so stop asking.

Mikkel Kessler (Oakland)

If only he hadn't hit me so much i would have won.

Michael (oakland) [via mobile]

I was at the fight, the U-S-A-! chants were awesome

Dan Rafael
  (1:09 AM)

Cool. You could hear it on TV and it sounded loud.

OK, Freaks, thanks for the late night chat. Impressive performance tonight from Andre Ward. This cold is really bad, so I'm going to bed. Hope you all have a great Thanksgiving next week. Peace.
