Chat with Matt Mosley

Kris (Alexandria)

Devin Thomas and Malcolm Kelly have been showing a bit of life the past few games, if this continues do we look to move Moss into the slot or do we look to shop him for a draft pick so we can really get younger with our aging O-Line and RB situation. I'd really like to see Marko Mitchell and Malcolm Kelly working the outsides with Thomas in the slot in years to come.

Mosley
  (12:01 PM)

With this current offensive line, Santana Moss doesn't have time to do what he does best. I don't think the Redskins are ready to cut ties, though. I'd forgotten about Marko Mitchell. Loved his work in the preseason.

Mike (Girard, PA)

Obviously Campo would take 75% of the Cowboys roster.

Mosley
  (12:02 PM)

I have no doubt about that. Campo was not backing down from that fight. He would've gone all 12 rounds, I assure you of that. But Wade said our eyes are lying to us on that sideline bout.

Ryan Kluthe (Albuquerque, NM)

IF Wade Phillips goes, who takes over this defense?

Mosley
  (12:03 PM)

It would be whomever Mike Shanahan or the next guy brings with him. Wade's not staying on as DC. He's got more pride than that...I think.

Mike (Girard, PA)

I think you're a little too high on DeSean Jackson, seeing as how Dallas shut him down. Or are you ready to admit the Cowboys have an elite defense?

Mosley
  (12:04 PM)

For goodness sakes, did you watch him against the Bears. If you commit your whole defense to stopping one guy, you can do it. That's what the Cowboys did with Jackson. But he's still one of the most dangerous players in the league. One quiet game doesn't change that. And let's not get carried away with the Cowboys secondary. If Suisham hits another field goal, we're not going on and on about the vaunted Cowboys defense.

Travis (Virginia)

Matt! It's me man, I know. Hey I like that last line on the Cowboys NFC stock watch! Why don't they mix it up with Felix more? It's like JG doesn't want to "mix it up" with any of the multiple weapons the Boys have. I don't get it. Help me understand

Mosley
  (12:05 PM)

Makes absolutely no sense to me. If you have a weapon like Felix, why in the world do you not get him involved?

Jay (Philly)

Who are your NFC wild card teams and Beast winner right now?

Mosley
  (12:06 PM)

I think the Cowboys will slay the demons of December and win the division. The Giants will grab one of the wildcards. And believe it or not, there's a good chance the Eagles also go.

Morgan (Washington, D.C.)

Matt, With all the Eagles' injuries on defense, especially in the secondary, can you hazard a guess as to why the defensive coaches don't try to at least perfect what the have? What I'm talking about is the fact that Asante Samuel, who may well be the best "big play" corner in the league, simply cannot tackle. His latest injury came from just diving at the legs of a Bears receiver; had he simply tried to wrap up the player, he would not have gotten injured. Why don't the Eagles' defensive coaches work with him on his tackling, or do they just assume it's a lost cause, and take their chances with him going for interceptions (and occassionally getting exposed, as has happened the last two weeks...)?Thanks,Morgan

Mosley
  (12:07 PM)

Listen, some guys just aren't willing to make those changes. You take what you can get with Samuel, which is an excellent cover guy. He's never going to be a willing tackler. A guy named Deion received the same criticism and he's going to end up in Canton.

Dean (Albany, NY)

Matt, do you think the Eagles have/can fix the redzone woes? If they hadn't shot themselves in the foot repeatedly against SD that would have been a win also.

Mosley
  (12:08 PM)

Let's not get carried away with that Chargers game. The Chargers offense raced up and down the field for most of the game. The red zone performance hurt, but the Chargers were the better team that day.

Jay (Philly)

Are there any positive signs for the Giants secondary?

Mosley
  (12:08 PM)

I thought Webster played much better against the Falcons and I like what Aaron Rouse is doing on the back end of that defense. Huge upgrade from C.C. Brown right now. Seriously.

ray gordon reid ( oxfordmississippi 38655)

questtion to matt mosley at 12.20p;m hi matt can eli have agreat game vs denver no itnerceptions

Mosley
  (12:09 PM)

Why in the world not? I'm not sure if Dawkins is going to play. The Broncos are in a free-fall right now. No reason Eli can't have a huge game. I'd just worry about the weather. What's it supposed to be, high 30s?

Dennis (Classroom)

Can the Giants defense come up with a creative pass rush that doesn't include one of their better pass rushers (DE) trying to cover a TE? It seems that either the pass rush either goes straight at the offense or they are dropping off linemen into man to man coverage.

Mosley
  (12:09 PM)

Hey I'm with you. I get frustrated every time I see Tuck out there covering a tight end or running back. Give me a break.

Ryan Kluthe (Albuquerque, NM)

I know the Cowboys pay Roy a lot, but will they ever bench him or at least sit him some to see what they have in Hurd and Ogletree? They both looked great in pre-season and Hurd especially seems good at finding holes.

Mosley
  (12:10 PM)

It will never happen as long as Jerry's in charge.

Eddie (Dahlgren)

Any chance the Giants are a better team without A Pierce on Defense? I know he is the captain and the leader. He is so smart on where to line people up and he studies so well. But his skills are declining quickly. He can't cover anybody. And he seems to get out of position by over pursuing!

Mosley
  (12:10 PM)

Nope, they need the guy on the field. Very smart player. Just went through a tough patch. He and Boley could be good together.

FA (Washington)

What's up with the Giants' O-Line? They were unable to get any push against a small Atlanta defensive front. Jacobs and Bradshaw had nowhere to run to all game and the team was left throwing bombs on 3rd and short - they were successful this time, but failed in a few other games this year. Is it a personnel issue or a scheme issue?

Mosley
  (12:11 PM)

There will be changes on that line next season. Mark my words. Looks a little leaky to me, too.

Mike (Girard, PA)

You just predicted 3 beast teams in the playoffs. Can we give them back the capital b? I don't care if it's a down year for the division, 3 teams in the playoffs is Beastly.

Mosley
  (12:12 PM)

It's more of a product of the rest of the NFC being pretty weak. Other than the Vikes and Saints, who do you like? I certainly don't trust the Packers.

Sarge (Iladel)

Can anyone really put that last Cowboys performance on Garrett? He did what all of you begged him to do, which was commit to the run, early and often, yet the production was no better.

Mosley
  (12:12 PM)

I don't have a huge problem with the way Garrett called that game, more of a problem with the way the players executed the game plan.

Eric (Chicago)

Matt, what do you think of Jay Cutler? You saw him Sunday Night...I think he's absolutely BRUTAL!

Mosley
  (12:13 PM)

Tough to watch. He's hurtling his body away from the rush at all times. Awful mechanics, awful decisions. And he's my fantasy QB. Nice decision there.

Joshua (Fort Worth)

Better question - where was Campo's fire like that when he was the HC of the Cowboys?

Mosley
  (12:13 PM)

He was taking the players to SeaWorld back then. He was in over his head. Now he can just get fired up and focus on one thing.

Vince Young (Houston, TX)

How am I not a franchise quarterback? I do nothing but win games.

Mosley
  (12:15 PM)

Looking more and more like one all the time. What a great performance last night. So much poise. I loved watching him play. he's growing up right now, just like he did in Austin. What a fun game to watch. Seeing the option at this level is pretty cool. And it worked pretty well.

Matt (Richmond)

What happened to the high power offense that Dallas had earlier in the year?

Mosley
  (12:15 PM)

Your guess is as good as mine. It seems like opposing defenses have figured out Garrett. He needs to counter -- and soon.

Patrick (Dallas)

What will it take for wade to keep his job? how far in the playoffs? (not that i would want him to stay).

Mosley
  (12:15 PM)

If he wins a playoff game, that might keep him around.

Steve (SC)

For all the if's and's and but's from the Skins game with the missed FG by Washington - if Barber doesn't fumble and Folk makes his FG - the game is in the bag before that last TD by Dallas.

Mosley
  (12:16 PM)

I'm not sure about that. The Skins missed two FGs. But yes, the tone of the game may have changed if the fumble doesn't happen. I need to send a column really quick. give me two minutes and I'll return. Thx.

Joshua (Fort Worth)

After all the hullaballoo from last night's MNF game, if I were to tell you that Romo only has one more win than Vince Young, would you believe me?

Mosley
  (12:20 PM)

Interesting note, Joshua. What is Vince now, like 21-11, 22-11. That's as well as I've seen the guy play in the NFL. And winning in Houston had to be pretty special.

Bill Sheridan (NY, NY)

I keep asking myself why I am not using the same schemes that were so successful here under Spags? Do I have too much pride at this point to realize what I am doing isn't working and need to go back to what has worked in the past?

Mosley
  (12:21 PM)

Let's cut the guy a little slack for losing a tremendous young safety in Kenny Phillips. Spags had some fairly dependable safeties with Butler and Johnson. And he had Gibril Wilson before that. And Sheridan's been without Canty, Ross and Boley for much of the season. So let's not get carried away with comparing Sheridan to Spags. But yes, it's not much of a comparison at this point.

Adam Franklin (DC (Dallas born, Philly schooled, DC working))

So, after such a horrendous two weeks in a row and the offense not producing TDs well...how can Jason Garret jump-start the offense again and get them to their high-powered usual self? Is there some sort of change he could make that involves some creativity? This week would be his chance. Thanksgiving Day's a good day

Mosley
  (12:22 PM)

How bout you involve Felix Jones in the passing game. Anyone? Anyone?

Christian (Staten Island, NY)

As great as Percy Harvin has been this year, as the year ends do you think LeSean McCoy could get a vote or two, or at least some honorable consideration for rookie of the year?

Mosley
  (12:23 PM)

Just depends on how he finishes up the season. If he gets really hot and starts running off some 100-yard games, then sure. But Harvin's the man right now.

Mike (PA)

What do you think of LeSean McCoy? I don't see anything special.

Mosley
  (12:24 PM)

I like McCoy. The guy's just getting started. I thought he was much more decisive against the Bears than we've seen him in past games. I think he could be special.

Shannon (NYC)

Hi Matt,What is wrong with the Giants DL? They dont seem to rush the passer like they did last year? Have teams figured them out?

Mosley
  (12:25 PM)

I think teams are doing a really good job of getting the ball out quickly. Look at who they've played. Philip Rivers and Matt Ryan both do a nice job of unloading the football. They also faced Drew Brees, who's masterful in Sean Payton's offense.

Charles (Orlando)

Any chance we'll see a coaching change for the Giants? I like Coughlin during the week, but I hate him during a game. I don't like the play calling and I especially dislike the ultra-conservative style late in the game. Many pinned the stumble on him, and they were extra harsh on him when they didn't bounce back against some very beatable teams. Think the owners are paying any mind to that, or do they want to stick with him longer?

Mosley
  (12:26 PM)

he's nowhere close to the hot seat. Now bill sheridan's a different story, Charles.

MJ (Boston)

Matt if you need to shut down or limit a big time WR who'd you take, Newman or Asante?

Mosley
  (12:27 PM)

Asante Samuel's the best in the league in zone coverage. He just sort of lurks and then jumps out and makes a big INT. One-on-one, those guys are pretty comparable. But right now, Mike Jenkins is playing better at corner than Newman.

Mike (Girard, PA)

I'm hearing some Cowboys fans saying that Free could be a possible replacement for Flo. Is this realistic or do you think his replacement is in college right now?

Mosley
  (12:27 PM)

Free's better on the right side. I wouldn't want to put him at left tackle. Not ever.

Dmyth12 (P H I L A.)

Is Boss, Eli's new Plax?

Mosley
  (12:28 PM)

Two totally different players, but I do think Eli Manning has a ton of trust in Boss right now.

Steve (FL)

How about Justice getting that contract extension. We was left for dead a couple months ago.

Mosley
  (12:28 PM)

I think it was my recent column that sealed the deal! :)

BSB (Philly)

I think that the loss of Stewart Bradley has had a crazy ripple effect. The worst thing to come of it was not the elevation of Joe Mays, or the resurrection of J. Trotter (both are not good) but the trade for Witherspoon. Lost in the deal was giving up Brandon Gibson and he is going to be a really solid player. I would rather have Gibson going forward than Kevin Curtis or Reggie. Do you think the Birds should have kept Gibson and given up a higher than 5th round pick?

Mosley
  (12:29 PM)

Nah, you got a starting LB for a possible playoff run. I'll give up a fifth-rounder for that. There's no way we know right now what Gibson's going to be become. But more importantly, we do know that he wasn't better than Jackson, Avant or Maclin. So that's a trade I don't really second guess.

Washington Redskins (Capital City)

Dear Matt,Why do you hate us so much? We kept Dallas (who you now claim will win the division) scoreless for almost the entire game. Our defense is pretty strong and our offense is, step-by-step, getting better. So, tell me Matt, are we really as puny as you make us out to be or are you just Mr. Negative?

Mosley
  (12:30 PM)

It's funny. People in Dallas think I'm some sort of huge Redskins homer. People in D.C. think I hate the Redskins. I don't root for 'em and I don't root against 'em.

Mike (Houston)

Please tell me Kubiak will be fired. The team is nothing but a tease under his direction.

Mosley
  (12:31 PM)

There were some playcalls that really troubled me in that game. And with eight second left stupid little sneak didn't do a thing. I think it's legit to wonder about Kubiak's future.

Tony Romo (Arlington, TX)

This December we have 5 games, 4 of them being the Chargers, Giants, Philly and Saints. What record do I need to post to get the 'cant win in December' lable removed?

Mosley
  (12:32 PM)

need to go 3-2 pal

matt (America)

Matt, how do you see the division finishing and what are their records? How do you rate the QBs in division as well?

Mosley
  (12:35 PM)

Matt from America:I think the Cowboys will finish 11-5, the Giants will be 10-6 and the Eagles will be 9-7. It's going to be fun down the stretch. Eagles might slip into the playoffs with that record. This is just how the QBs are playing at this very moment:1. McNabb2. Manning3. Romo4. Campbell

Scott (Dallas)

Matt, how do you see the Cowboys oline sorting out over the next couple years? Flozell and Gurode will likely be cut. Should they draft a LT in round one and move Free to LG or C?

Mosley
  (12:37 PM)

They're not getting ready to cut Gurode -- and they think Adams has at least another year in him. Sure, they need to keep drafting the best O-linemen available. As I said earlier, I don't think Free's the longtime answer at LT. I think he'd make a pretty good starting right tackle, though.

Matt (Charlotte)

Will Bruce Johnson convert to a safety? He won't see the field with Webster and Ross starting and Thomas and Dockery splitting the nickel (even though he's better than Dockery). Ross said he doesn't want to go back to safety so why not give Johnson a shot?

Mosley
  (12:38 PM)

you don't want to overwhelm a rookie. It's not like he was all that good at CB against the Falcons on Sunday. I'd keep him where he is. And who cares what Ross wants. He'll have to do whatever the coaches ask him to do.

david (halifax)

Matt, you just said you don't root for washington and you don't root against them. Who do you root for?

Mosley
  (12:38 PM)

Baylor

Hog.Brew (Austin)

In your opinion, is getting Shanahan worth keeping Vinny around?

Mosley
  (12:39 PM)

Sure, if you think Shanahan can get the thing turned around. Vin's not going to have as much say with Shanny walking the halls.

Steve (SC)

Best announce team for pro football right now???

Mosley
  (12:40 PM)

Brad Sham and Babe Laufenburg

Yatin (LA)

I love the guy, but I think we've seen the last of Brian Westbrook in green. Thoughts?

Mosley
  (12:40 PM)

I think Andy Reid will try to bring him back for one more season, but he may get overruled. The Eagles have always been good at knowing when to say goodbye. We may have arrived at that time.

Shawn (Philly)

What are the chance Dallas trade's one of there RB's for a pick/player of need .... ? It is nice to have a dearth of talent but not at the expense of our positions

Mosley
  (12:41 PM)

Not going to happen.

LeSean McCoy (Philly)

Hey Matt, what kind of production do you see me achieving this week at Washington?

Mosley
  (12:42 PM)

Cowboys had success running the ball because the Skins only had seven players in the box. Eagles could do the same thing. I think McCoy could have a big day. Let's see if Haynesworth plays.

Alan Ball (Dallas)

Can i be a starting every week safety in this league>

Mosley
  (12:42 PM)

Let's not get ahead of yourself, young Alan. Geez!

Jim (North Jersey)

What do you think of the young depth at WR for the Giants? Smith Manningham and Nicks all loook great right now.

Mosley
  (12:43 PM)

Looks pretty good. Manningham needs to become more consistent, but he has big-play potential. Nicks is a star in the making. Sort of reminds me of Boldin -- but he's faster. Not quite as think and powerful.

Mike (New Orleans)

MM, I know all of the writers say they don't root for any particular team, but growing up, i'm sure most of them were fans of a particular team. I would find it difficult to abandon my fanship for my job. I would be able to appreciate what other teams do and still be objective, but completely stop cheering for my team would be tough. So....who do you cheer for in your youth?

Ben (SF)

How does Nicks compare to the other rookie WRs? Crabtree looks like a beast, but i'd put Nicks #2. Agree?

Mosley
  (12:46 PM)

I think I'd put Maclin ahead of Nicks right now. They're both on their way, though. And I haven't seen enough of Crabtree yet to get out the anointing oil. I do know he was one of the best college receivers I've ever seen in person. Folks, there's breaking news on Winston Justice. I need to blog about it immediately. Thanks for your time. Can't wait to do this again next week.

Rob (Laredo, TX)

Will Laron Landry ever realize his potential and become a discipline and complete player? We have been using the word "potential" since his rookie season. Its year three, so something should have clicked by now.

Mosley
  (12:48 PM)

OK, let's do one more question. I think LaRon Landry could be one of the most feared players in the league. He was great against the Cowboys on Sunday. But his desire to constantly go for the big hit causes him to take poor angles. I'm not sure he has the maturity to ever achieve what he thought he would. Sort of like Bengals safety Roy Williams.
